Ship Channel
Here is a view of ships on the Houston Ship Channel. On Port of Houston/Houston Ship Channel Tours and San Jacinto State Park Tours, we normally have lunch at Monument Inn. The restaurant borders on the Ship Channel and has magnificent views, in addition to great food.
This is another view of the Battleship Texas.
Started in 1822, some version of the Lynchburg Ferry has operated over the section of Buffalo Bayou that is now known as the Houston Ship Channel for almost 200 years.
This view of the San Jacinto Monument includes the Reflecting Pool. Built for the centennial anniversary of independence from Mexico, the San Jacinto Monument opened four years late in 1940, not 1936. It is the tallest monument in the United States because it has a star of Texas on top of it.
Here is a view of the San Jacinto Monument ftom Independence Parkway. It is 567 feet/173 meters tall. Alfred Finn was the architect.
Due to the August 2017 Hurricane Harvey’s damage and the Port of Houston Authority (POHA) changing schedules, our offerings have changed. All of the tours cost the same amount. However, they may start at 3 different times, due to when the POHA is operating tour boats. We try to begin each tour after the morning rush hour and end before the evening rush hour and or sunset.
All of the tours stop for lunch at Monument Inn. This is one of the best seafood restaurants in the greater Houston area. It is located along the Houston Ship Channel (HSC). One can watch ships, tankers, barges, and tugboats passing as we enjoy a savory meal. Its views are unsurpassed. Bring $8.00 to $40.00 for lunch depending on what you order. Most meals are between $15.00 and $25.00.
Tours A, B1, B2, C1, and C2 include riding on the POHA M/V Sam Houston boat. All of these tours have the same itinerary, but in different orders due to the time that the boat departs. At the time that I am writing this, January 16, 2019, the POHA no longer offers Sunday tours so Tour A, which is on Sunday, is not available. The POHA also does not offer tours on Monday. For several years, the POHA did not offer tours on Saturdays. Now, it occasionally offers such tours. We are keeping each of the tours listed on our website because we cannot predict when the POHA will change its policies again.
The POHA allows scheduling boat rides a maximum of 3 months in advance. Many tours fill immediately. We recommend that if you want a tour involving a boat, contact us AT LEAST 2 MONTHS IN ADVANCE. This is especially true if you have a large group of 20 more people. A boat may have some vacancies, but not enough to accommodate everyone if you have a large group and you wait too long. Furthermore, we do not reserve any tours until we have received a non-refundable deposit. You must make a financial commitment if you want us to work for you. If you hesitate to send in the non-refundable deposit, other parties may reserve the seats in the meantime.
The ship is closed periodically for maintenance.
For boat rides, you must provide us with a list containing the name of every person who will be participating on the tour before a reservation can be made. Each participant must bring photo identification on the day of the tour. A driver’s license or passport is sufficient. Purses are subject to inspection. Backpacks and oversized purses are prohibited. The POHA’s security policies are not enforced consistently, but it is better to err on the side of having this information rather than being rejected on the day that the reservation is attempted or on the day of the tour.
For groups of 15 or more touring on buses or full-size vans, we can show videos of the history of the Houston Ship Channel, Houston Pilots, oil, the current operations, and more. For any group, we can distribute magazines and newsletters about the Port of Houston, provide you with a quiz about the Houston Ship Channel, and narratives.
Private boats are not permitted to traverse the Houston Ship Channel. The HSC’s operations are a matter of national security with oil refineries and other plants along the HSC. Houston is the energy capital of the United States (US).
Tour Information
Tours A, B1 and B2, C1, and C2 all include going on a 75 to 90-minute boat ride on the Houston Ship Channel. The boat rides starts at the Turning Basin and goes no further than the Beltway 8 bridge and often not that far. It is limited in its scope. The POHA provides free coffee and a soft drink or water on the boat ride. It has interior and exterior, covered and uncovered areas, from which one can observe the Channel, docks, vegetation, fish, and birds. It is a smooth ride and the boat captain will provide information over the public address speakers. Dress appropriately for the weather. Expect to get some spray on yourself if you are outside at the front of the boat. The maximum capacity is 100. We are to arrive 30 minutes before the boat is to launch. You will be able to use bathrooms at the pavilion at the loading dock and in the lower deck of the boat.
Tour D covers a much broader area, going twice as far as the boat travels, with driving through or by the Barbours Cut Container Terminal, the Bayport Container Terminal, the former Bayport Cruise Ship Terminal in Pasadena, the ExxonMobil plant in Baytown (the second largest oil refinery in the United States), and stops along the Houston Ship Channel and Galveston Bay in multiple cities. Beginning in 1956, most freight has been delivered in containers so that trucks or trains can conveniently take it across America with minimal time and labor spent loading and unloading. Tour D does not include a boat ride. It goes through or by 17 cities and all 5 transits over, under, and on the Channel. We will drive through Channelview, La Porte, Deer Park, Baytown, Morgan’s Point, Sylvan Beach, El Jardin del Mar, Shoreacres, Pasadena, Seabrook, Kemah, and El Lago, in addition to Houston. It is potentially available every day of the year and can be scheduled at any time without providing names of each participant or a two-month lead period.
Each tour takes you:
- To the original Port of Houston, also known as Allen’s Landing in downtown Houston, dating to August 1836.
- Over the Houston Ship Channel on the Sidney Sherman/I-610 Houston Ship Channel bridge. Both sides of the bridge are in Houston.
- Under the Houston Ship Channel (if in sedans and vans) in the Washburn Tunnel, provided that it is open. It connects Pasadena on the south side to Galena Park on the north side. This is the only under water tunnel in Texas.
- Over the Houston Ship Channel on the Sam Houston Tollway/Beltway 8. It connects Channelview on the north side with Pasadena on the south side.
- On the Lynchburg Ferry (if in sedans and vans) crossing the Houston Ship Channel, provided that it is operating. It connects La Porte on the south side to the community of Lynchburg on the north side.
- By the refineries of Pasadena and La Porte.
- To San Jacinto State Park, the San Jacinto Battlefield, San Jacinto Monument, and the Battleship Texas.
- Through or along Channelview, Deer Park, Galena Park, and Jacinto City.
Port of Houston
The Port of Houston reserves the right to cancel a tour without advanced notice. Houston Historical Tours has no control over this. We serve as a conduit for this tour; we provide transportation and narratives, and take you over multiple crossings of the Houston Ship Channel. If you have your own transportation and only want a boat ride, you can contact the Port of Houston directly to schedule a free tour by going to http://www.portofhouston.com/community-outreach/sam-houston-boat-tour/tour-schedule/ or calling (713) 670-2400.
- If you want a shorter tour of 5 hours, we can eliminate stopping at the San Jacinto State Park (SJSP) and Battleship Texas.
- If you want a shorter tour of 4 hours, we can eliminate SJSP, the Battleship Texas, and a stop for lunch.

The Next Generation of the Logistics Workforce

By 2030, when all Baby Boomers will have turned 65, fully 18% of the nation’s population will be at least that age, according to Pew Research Center population projections. Today, just 13% of Americans are ages 65 and older. The industry is all facing a talent gap and need to proactively recruit and retain employees – and bring more diversity into maritime and logistics work if it is to be successful. This panel will discuss what various sectors are doing to proactively work on this challenge – from seafarer needs and terminal labor to shoreside business roles.

Successful Strategies to Manage Growth and Risk on the Busiest Ship Channel in the US
Topic: Promoting growth and managing risk don’t have to be mutually exclusive. On the busiest ship channel in the US by vessel movements and tonnage, governmental regulators and industry have developed collaborative processes that achieve both. Through a massive channel improvement project, regular channel maintenance dredging, and occasional seasonal weather closures, stakeholders have developed protocols that positively contribute to channel efficiency and navigation safety.

Boston lighthouses highlighted on harbor cruises ahead of whale watching season.
Whale watching excursions pushed back to protect endangered right whales in Mass. waters

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.
Boston’s treasured lighthouses are being highlighted on harbor cruises while an endangered species is given space to feed in the waters off Massachusetts.
“Everyone loves a lighthouse!” said David Coffin, the narrator of the Boston Harbor City Cruise lighthouse tour. “How can you not like a lighthouse?”
The two-hour tour is a limited-edition cruise meant to highlight the historic structures and Boston history. Visitors onboard can opt for indoor or outdoor seating, where they get a view of the U.S.S. Constitution, the Boston Light, Graves Light and other notable points in these waters.
And during the journey, Coffin, a noted sea chantey singer, who’s made a name for himself on TikTok, will treat visitors to a rendition of a locally inspired chantey.
In addition to relying on interest in lighthouses, the tour also replaces a traditional whale-watching excursion.
“We used to start whale watches at the end of March,” said Coffin. “But now, as of last year at least, there’s a speed restriction out on Stellwagen Bank where the whales feed, and our boats will take you. So a whale watch today with a speed restriction would be about eight hours.”
Video below: How scientists identify and track right whales
That speed restriction on these waters is meant to protect one of the most endangered animals on the planet - the North Atlantic right whale.
“We’ve created this problem, we’ve caused this population to decrease significantly,” said Dr. Sarah Sharp, an animal rescue veterinarian with the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “But the good side of that is that it’s also in our hands to help save this population and really be a part of that solution for these animals.”
Watch the video above to learn more about conservation efforts to protect the North Atlantic right whale.
2024 RBC Heritage prize money payouts for each PGA Tour player
It pays to play well on the PGA Tour. Just ask this week’s winner, Scottie Scheffler .
The 27-year-old won the 2024 RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, on Monday after play was suspended for two-and-a-half hours on Sunday due to inclement weather and then later for darkness. The win is the world No. 1's fourth in his last five starts and 10th of his PGA Tour career.
Last week Scheffler won $3.6 million at the Masters and he earned another $3.6 million for his win this week in the PGA Tour's latest big-money signature event. Sahith Theegala, who finished three shots back in second, banked a hefty $2.18 million for his runner-up showing. Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark, who finished T-3 at 15 under, each banked $1.18 million.

Pga tour players learn how much loyalty is worth in new equity program.

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.
The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .

The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.
How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.
The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.
Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.
The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.
Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.
Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.
Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.
It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.
Jason Gore, the tour's chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It's really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”
Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.
The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.
Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.
Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.
LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.
McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.
“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.
