‘My relationship with beauty has been magnified by my heritage’: Priyanka Chopra Jonas on how she uses makeup to feel more confident

travel up advert model indian

By Emily Maddick

As one of the only actors to make the transition from Bollywood to Hollywood, Priyanka Chopra Jonas has gone on to become one of the most accomplished South Asian women in the industry. To mark her new global partnership with Max Factor, which starts with her campaign for the brand's new Facefinity All Day Flawless Airbrush Finish 3-in-1 Foundation, Priyanka opens up to GLAMOUR’s Emily Maddick about her relationship with confidence , her mental health and the surprising life advice she lives by.

“I choose to feel confident. I don't rely on confidence coming to me,” declares Priyanka Chopra Jonas, a woman who is world-renowned for her poise, dignity, power and for exuding remarkable confidence. “I think over time I've realised that you don't need confidence every day. You can be vulnerable, you can be sad… But when you need to feel confident, you have to be able to get rid of all the noise and focus on what you bring to the table – it’s like a skill,” she says.

Confidence is one of the first things Priyanka and I discuss as we meet over Zoom on a sunny morning in London to discuss her new role as global ambassador of Max Factor . “It’s very exciting to be in this partnership with them, I have a feeling we’ll do some fun things together!” she says.

As we chat, it’s reassuring to hear that even a woman of this standing, with over 70 movies under her belt, alongside a brief music career and work as a philanthropist, can ever have moments when she doesn’t feel secure in her own self-worth. “I think as human beings, we can't help but notice our flaws, and we get caught up on our failures instead of recognising our strengths,” she confides.

As we talk about her new partnership with Max Factor, the 38-year-old tells me that the power of makeup to transform is something she has long used to her advantage. “Makeup, for both men and women, can be something that helps you feel confident. You can use it in so many ways. You can use it to express yourself. You can use it to feel good. You can use it to hide flaws and feel more confident,” she says. “I started wearing makeup when I was four years old because I stuck my fingers into all of my mom's lipsticks and put it all over my face,” she recalls, laughing.

Born in Jamshedpur in India to physician parents, Priyanka became a household name in India in the early 2000s after winning Miss India, and then Miss World, before going on to dominate Bollywood. She moved to Los Angeles in 2015 and became one of the first South Asian actors to crack Hollywood, before marrying musician Nick Jonas in 2018. Her most recent 2021 Netflix megahit White Tiger was Oscar -nominated, and she not only starred in it, but also served as executive producer.

But it was growing up in India that Priyanka credits with starting her early obsession with makeup and beauty. “India is known for beautiful women. I think the relationship I have with beauty has definitely been magnified by my heritage,” she states. I note that her own skin is flawless, to which she also credits her heritage, “It is a little genetic. I mean, brown don't frown!” she says, laughing again.

Image may contain Human Person Cosmetics Lipstick Priyanka Chopra Mouth and Lip

As an Indian woman in Hollywood, Priyanka has used her profile to defy stereotypes, so I wonder what changes she has seen in recent years in terms of diversity and representation? “I feel like the change that I've seen in the industry is there's a conversation,” she says. “Now there is an acknowledgement of the lack of diversity, which I'm seeing within the industry, and it’s a great first step. We have a long way to go when it comes to being able to write parts for people and including other ethnicities in mainstream entertainment.”

It’s been a tough year for everyone with the uprising against racial inequalities across the world set against the backdrop of the Coronavirus pandemic, so I ask how Priyanka has managed her own mental wellness . “It's not easy, but what has really helped me is the sense of gratitude,” she says. “I feel really grateful that I'm safe, my family's safe and that I have a home and a job.”

Priyanka has been based in London since November last year, filming romantic drama Text For You and a new Amazon Studio TV series called Citadel . Our conversation about the past year leads me to ask when she feels her personal strength has been challenged the most? “I'm usually very strong,” she says, “but for example, when my father was unwell [he died in 2013] and it was the last few months, I did not have any personal strength. Even now seeing what's happening in India with Covid , there's such a sense of helplessness that I feel like my strength gets very challenged.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Evening Dress, Fashion, Gown, Robe, Priyanka Chopra, Sleeve, Human, and Person

As my time winds up with Priyanka, I ask what the best piece of advice she has ever been given is, and her answer is somewhat surprising. Recalling when she was working with legendary US music producer Jimmy Iovine , she says his mantra really stuck with her: "When the sh t gets bigger than the cat, it’s time to get rid of the cat." Laughing again she explains the concept, “We as people are emotional hoarders, right? We're like, ‘Oh, I can handle it.’ But when the sh t is bigger than the reason you're hoarding the emotional stuff, then just get rid of the cat.”

And with those wise words, Ms Chopra Jonas’ break from filming is up and she’s back to work. Poised, confident, talented and with a glorious sense of humour, it’s no wonder the beauty buffs at Max Factor have made her the face of their iconic brand.

10 iconic Indian TV ads that signalled the summer

By Arundhati Ail

Katrina Kaif's iconic Indian TV ad for Slice mango juice

In many parts of the world, summer is a welcome change. Picnics under the warm sun, beach days, long walks and outdoor barbecues may be how summer is spent elsewhere. But in parts of India, summer means sweltering heat, a film of sweat on your clothes, and hot water on tap. There’s the first sight of mangoes at your local fruit-walla, the tumbler of nimbu paani your mother begins keeping in the fridge, and, of course, the clear blue skies. And before OTT took over our screens, summer also meant a bunch of Indian TV ads told you loud and clear: it’s time to chill.

Who can forget the sound of Kailash Kher’s soulful voice singing “aaya mausam thande thande dermicool ka”? Growing up, no matter how hot it got, until the Dermicool ad aired, it wasn’t really summer.

Mangoes are the Indian summer’s redeeming factor. But when you think of Slice, you think of something else before you think of mangoes- Katrina Kaif. Her iconic AamSutra ad caused quite a stir, but was always a reminder that the wait was over and mango season was finally upon us.

Nothing captures the Indian summer like this Glucon-D ad. When you’re out and about in the heat, it really does feel like the angry sun is draining you of your energy. And the ad was effective too! After all, when it was time for school or sports practice in the summer, there was always an extra bottle in our backpacks filled with the bright orange liquid.

If there’s anything you need to be in the summer, it’s “thanda, thanda, cool, cool”. And if one Shahrukh Khan wasn’t enough to drive home the point, Navratna Cool talc gave us two.

Whether it was the “sar jo tera chakraye” jingle with Kareena Kapoor or the “Splash of Freshness” campaign, Limca always made sure to remind us that summer meant good ol’ lemonade. Everything could be fixed with some “lime n’ lemony limca”.

This summer drink, in flavours like badam, kesar, coffee and rose, is the quick cooler we all need once the burning heat sets in. Though it’s probably not a Gen-Z favourite, back when the ad used to air, being part of the “Kool Team” was a big deal.

Come summer, the Onida devil made an appearance on all our TV screens. With his black suit and horns over his shiny bald head, he reminded us that even in the depths of burning hell, Onida ACs can keep things cool and breezy.

Despite how divided people are about Rooh Afza ’s rosy taste, it remains the drink of the summer. Seeing a Rooh Afza ad on TV meant that the next time you visited your grandparents or aunts and uncles, the scarlet drink is what you would be handed. And even if you weren’t a fan, you would gulp it down for some sweet relief from the heat.

Though it is Shahrukh Khan who helms this ad, the stars of the show are the adorable children who drool and watch transfixed as he slowly gulps an entire bottle of Frooti after a game of football in the sun. The iconic ad also marked Frooti’s shift from their signature tetra-packs to PET bottles.

Come summer, the cola wars would begin in full force. Coca Cola brought the star power with Bollywood actors like Aamir Khan and Deepika Padukone, Pepsi brought out the big guns with Salman Khan and Thums Up gave us action-packed ads with Akshay Kumar and Mahesh Babu. As a result, the beginning of summer always sparked the same heated debate in friend groups- what really is the best cola out there?

Throwback: How the Incredible India ad campaign made a global splash

Rugged peaks of snow-capped mountains, beautiful valleys, undulating rivers, vibrant forests teaming with wildlife, sun-kissed coasts, spectacular monuments, delicious food, and vibrant culture: India, an ancient land, has much to offer travellers. Whether they look to expand their horizons beyond or wish to look within to find themselves, India has it all.

The global tourism scenario took a hit as a result of 9/11 and its aftermath. The international tourism industry was largely stagnating, and India was no exception. India, as a tourist destination, had much to offer. But how could a country showcase itself given its size, diverse natural landscape, and unique cultural features? A specific strategy was necessary to boost tourism.

The tourism department put Amitabh Kant on the task of turning the fortunes of the Indian tourism industry around. The advertising agencies had a simple brief: promote India to international travellers, especially the high-end ones.

The concept and its execution

Ogilvy & Mather developed a novel presentation. A drawing by V. Sunil showed the word “India” with an exclamation mark for the first “I”. It was a visual trick that worked well. India was like the exclamation mark, and Sri Lanka was like the dot. Also, the word “Incredible” did deserve an exclamation!

So the concept of “Incredible India” was created. It was a series of advertisements, in print and on television. In the eye-catching print advertisement, the exclamation mark became the Taj Mahal minaret reflected in water along with the dot-like moon. In another, it became the black vertical stripe of a tiger, and in yet another, a woman stood in a desert with a pot.

One television commercial showed the mosaic that is India, juxtaposing the desert of Rajasthan with the cold desert of Leh or Ladakh. People were shown doing dance, yoga, and playing traditional musical instruments from various regions of the country. Each scene was captivating and ended with the majestic Taj Mahal and a person in a yoga pose. There was a bright colour, splendour and uniqueness of experience on offer for the international traveller.

In yet another television commercial, a foreign traveller (a racetrack enthusiast) reconnected with himself through yoga and spectacular rides and walks in the foothills and snowy slopes of the Himalayas. Ending with the lines, “Find the incredible you”. It is the kind of journey a person takes within themselves.

The campaign to promote Indian tourism is a great example of experiential marketing.

The holistic approach

The Incredible India campaign was successful and has remained so since its launch. The Indian states and union territories were included in the programme, so that they promoted their region and culture, all under the aegis of this programme. For example, the state of Madhya Pradesh presented itself as the “Heart of Incredible India”.

This comprehensive approach has helped the Indian tourism industry and has presented a cohesive face to tourism promotion. Efforts have been made for the inclusive development of tourism by all stakeholders starting from the local community.

The Incredible India website has given a fillip to tourism promotion, with its easy-to-navigate site, relevant information and captivating images. A mobile application has followed too. All these collective efforts have resulted in the growth of foreign as well as domestic tourism in India.

The Ministry of Tourism has unveiled “Visit India Year 2023”. “Incredible India 2.0” was also launched to make targeted promotions globally with television commercials, and increased digital presence. For all who wish to visit, “Incredible India” will truly enthral.

5 best Indian tourism ads with a story

November 2, 2017

/ By Sudipto Roy / Kolkata

A still from the Diu tourism ad

A still from the Diu tourism ad

From showing rivers, mountains, monuments, forests and an occasional presence of a celebrity, tourism ads have now transcended to engage viewers with a story – the new destination ads aim to convert a dream into a reality.

What makes a good tourism commercial? We asked the filmmakers who have bestowed their proficiency in making destinations more coveted. The answers that came our way were absolutely in line with a travel cycle. It starts from dreaming to planning to booking to experiencing and then to sharing which again inspires others to dream. The stories associated with a trip remains alive than just those memories of the monuments or a boat ride across a river.

The travel and tourism industry in India contributes 9.6 pc of the GDP and its annual growth is predicted at 6.8 pc. The foreign tourist arrival in the country is increasing at a rate of 10.7 pc with 8.89 million foreign tourists in 2016.

As a matter of fact, tourism industry promotion under the emblematic theme of Incredible India has rightly gathered a lot of momentum over the past few years; however, the idea of engaging a traveller with a quintessential story has dawned upon the tourism boards in all good spirits. The states such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Telangana have joined in with unique video ads trying to capture the attention of travellers.

We have tried to short-list five unique video adverts that have gone beyond the travel videos or just destination commercials and have tried to infuse stories from the land to inspire travellers. Here’s a list of the five tourism ads that tells a unique story…

Kashmir: The Warmest Place on Earth

Depicting the stunning valleys of Kashmir would have been the easiest way out; however, the story of this couple going around the scenic locales of Kashmir with a cab driver will definitely make you feel the warmth. While safety and security in this north Indian state have always been a talking point, this ad beautifully captures the warmth of the cohort in the region blending it with the mystic landscapes of the valley.

Incredible India

Another campaign for the country’s tourism slogan, Incredible India, Prakash Varma’s ad takes the journey of a traveller to a new level of personalisation. Introducing a single traveller made the ad really personal and it turned out to be one of the most viewed tourism advertisement videos on the Internet.

Awesome Assam

The ad featuring Priyanka Chopra shows the various traditional and cultural aspects of the state that often got lost in translation. The ad has no specific story but traces an emotion of a tourist who just got back from her trip to Assam and why a visit to this north-eastern state will stay with her forever.

Kerala: Your moment is waiting

This campaign too was a Prakash Verma project released way back in 2010. This ad makes it to our list for the sheer brilliance in story-telling techniques. The ad was targeted at the international travellers as Kerala tourism wanted to attract travellers luring them with an anticipation of surreal experiences and some breathtaking landscapes coupled with a mesmerising music score.

Diu – Isle of Calm

Another masterwork by Prakash Verma, this commercial follows a woman who is transported from her hectic city life to the pristine locales in Diu. The Union Territory that hardly gets noticed in a crowd of diverse tourism destination in India could easily make an impact with this campaign. Anyone stuck in his or her otherwise busy life wanting a break in the lap of nature would instantly get inspired to visit what they call the Isle of Calm.

Have you ever travelled to a destination just because you loved the video-ad campaign? Share your story with us…

Beyond Bollywood: Indian Models Takeover International Runways

by Arushi Sakhuja | December 4, 2023 December 6, 2023

Indian Models Takeover International Runways

India is going places on the global map of fashion, and Indian talent is making a mark on international runways. We asked modelling management agencies to share their thoughts.

With the fashion industry continuing to incorporate diversity, reflecting on a commitment to inclusivity - Indian models have been reaping the benefits. India has found a new prominence within the world of fashion following the success of Dior’s Pre-Fall 2023 showcase at the Gateway of India in Mumbai in March. The show brought with it a star-studded guestlist, including the likes of Cara Delevigne, Karlie Kloss, Maise Williams, and social media fashion sensation Bryan Yambao.

“Doors started to open for our Indian girls since Pooja Mor’s debut for the LV Cruise show in 2015. With each year it becomes more and more and I feel after Dior came to India and casted 90% of Indian faces, this further contributed to the influx of requests for Indian models internationally,” says Gunita Stobe, co-founder of Anima Creative Management.

The surge for Indian models on the runway began in 1994 when Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sushmita Sen became Miss World and Miss Universe, respectively, and has remained a mainstay. As much as runway veterans Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer, Gigi and Bella Hadid are adored and appreciated, it’s time the world familiarises itself with the new wave of Indian models who continue to represent diversity on these coveted catwalks.

When mentioning a shift in casting practices within luxury brands and the increased volume of Indian and Southeast Asian presence, Stobe’s heart filled with joy as she went on to say “I am glad to see now a sea of Indian faces with all shades of skin tones and features from all across India represented globally. Now the time is in full bloom for Indian and Southeast Asian faces which is absolutely great and I hope it will stay there and not just become a trend.”

To further emphasise India’s growing presence in the global limelight, we spoke to leading Indian modelling agencies to get an industry insight.

“Cultural diversity isn’t just a fleeting trend; it’s a recognition that brands have embraced the significance of representation and inclusivity across all marketing platforms, whether it’s a campaign or a runway show. This shift also aligns with the acknowledgement of the Indian customer base as the next major untapped growth market in the fashion industry.” Amrita Masani, Founder and Director, Faze Management
“The shift in model casting signifies a more inclusive approach, embracing diverse talent. As an agency, we represent this diversity by consistently featuring models of various ethnicities, genders, and body types in our shows and campaigns, actively participating in inclusivity initiatives, and fostering a transparent commitment to equal representation at all levels of our organisation.” Pankaj Arora, Director, Inega Model Management

The Indian Takeover

September marks the end of Fashion Week and we have seen a widespread of Indian talent on the roster across Paris, Milan, London, and New York. Notable Indian talent for Fashion Week include:

  • Bhumika Arora - walked for Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs
  • Pooja Mor – walked for Tory Burch
  • Neelam Gill – walked for Diesel and Burberry
  • Avanti Nagrath – walked for Hermès, Dior, Roberto Cavalli, Alberta Ferretti and Boss
  • Diya Prabhakar – walked for Falguni Shane Peacock, Alexander Wang, and Manish Arora
  • Dipti Sharma – walked for Oscar de la Renta, Dries Van Noten, and Michael Kors
  • Neil Varel – modelled for Brandon Murphy and Fendi

“Our industry is heavily driven by inspiration and creativity which means there are too many different aspects involved while scouting new faces and making decisions to offer representation. Fashion, like art, is very subjective. What is diverse to one, may not be to another,” Stobe tells BurdaLuxury. Stobe is not alone as Pankaj Arora also reflects on this shift, stating “As India finds its place in the world, as a country we are reflecting that within too. There’s testimony of this, with the Indian models excelling on the international stage too. Avanti Nagrath being a fine example.” He further shares that “fashion is becoming increasingly diverse and inclusive. Designers and fashion brands are realising the importance of representing a variety of cultures and backgrounds, both on and off the runway. This shift is driven by a desire to be more reflective of the global population and to cater to a broader customer base.”

The boom of Indian talent internationally has also generated positive impact domestically. Stobe shares with us that “the change has coincided with the success of Indian faces abroad. Once Indian models started to make an impact on the biggest shows and campaigns internationally, the local market seemed to change locally. Fashion magazines now started to support Indian faces so much more than before in their editorial pages, and so do local designers for their brand campaigns.”

Championing Inclusivity and Diversity

“We prioritise diversity to reflect our global audience, ensuring a mix of races, ethnicities, and body types.” Pankaj tells BurdaLuxury. He goes on to explain how diverse portfolios are maintained at Inega Model Management, “curating a diverse model roster entails proactively sourcing models from a range of backgrounds to ensure equitable representation. This fosters inclusivity, aligning with our audience’s diversity, and cultivates a brand image that is both relatable and welcoming.”

At Anima Creative Management, the entire board comprises of models that have inspired the founders. “We never base our scouting decisions on politics and are not driven by short-lived trends to attract media attention, rather we are based on passion for our work, passion to discover, nurture, groom and support emerging new faces with aim of creating long lasting international career pathways in modelling. Our models and their personal journeys and stories represent the agencies brand of Anima.”

In the words of Amrita Masani, “The fashion industry has been on a transformative journey, gradually shedding its earlier inflexibility regarding a singular definition of beauty. Today, models with all kinds of ethnic backgrounds, skin tones, and body types are wholeheartedly accepted – the more diverse, the better.” She adds, “inclusivity and diversity have been cornerstones of Faze’s mission since its inception. We were pioneers in the industry by establishing a dedicated Bengaluru division to scout and exclusively represent talent from South India. Moreover, we’ve constantly represented a wide range of models from Northeast India long before it became a trend.”

Things are changing in fashion, and this is only the beginning. Could Indian talent continue its momentum on international runways? We would say so.

Travel tips for models: Visiting Delhi

Since almost all flights from Europe arrive between 00:00 and 05:00 at night, it can take a long time to go through all the formalities. Those models who are lucky will be picked up at the exit, others will have to take a taxi or a riksha. The ride should cost between 150 and 200 Rs with a motor riksha, but it is not advisable to switch on the taximeter if you are not very well versed in Delhi. Due to the late night hour of arrival, it is advisable to reserve a hotel room in advance. The taxis / riksha drivers will then usually claim that the hotel has been burned down, overburdened, or attacked by insurgents. This is intended to lure the travelers to other hotels, where the taxpayers get commission. This commission is then directly onto the room price added. One way to get around this is to use the prepaid taxi booth inside the airport building, where you can buy a taxi ride at a fixed price and destination. The fastest and cheapest way is the metro ride. The Metro runs between 06:00 and 22:00 and is very modern. The journey to the city center costs only 60 Rs.

Become a model in dehli.

Delhi is India’s capital city and the home of executive, legislative, and judiciary branches of the Government of India. Delhi is a large metropolis with strengths in arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, tourism and transport all contributing to its prominence.

Delhi is a city where time travel is feasible. Step aboard your time machine (the sleek and efficient metro) and you can go from Old Delhi, where labourers haul sacks of spices and jewellers weigh gold on dusty scales, to modern New Delhi, with its colonial-era parliament buildings and penchant for high tea. Then on to the future: Gurgaon, a satellite city of skyscraping offices and glitzy malls. This pulsating metropolis has a bigger population than Australia, and is one of the world’s most polluted cities. But woven into its rich fabric are moments of pure beauty: an elderly man threading temple marigolds; Sufi devotional songs; a boy flying a kite from a rooftop. So don’t be put off. Delhi is a city that has been repeatedly ravaged and reborn, with vestiges of lost empires in almost every neighbourhood. There’s so much to experience here, it’s like a country in itself.

Travel tips for models: Visiting Dehli

Most visitors to India land either in Delhi or Mumbai (Bombay). And it is from these cities that they glean their first impressions; and in these cities that they learn the ropes of travel in India. I was lucky, from my very first day in India, I stayed with an Indian family in South Delhi. True Delhi-wallahs, they helped me see the beauty and essential charm of the city and provided the keys to discover hidden treasures that most tourists miss. I grew to love the city and I hope you will give it a chance, too. The spanking-new metro makes it easy to get around the sprawling city in air-conditioned comfort, so you no longer have to stay in the centre of town. Don’t be afraid to use it, especially during the day, even if you’re a woman travelling alone. There’s a Ladies Car at one end of every train, clearly marked with pink signage so you’ll know where to stand. If you’re not going far, you can always take an autorickshaw, also known as a tuk-tuk; and there are cabs aplenty, including the iconic white Ambassador taxis. Another smart choice is to hire a car-and-driver for the day, a surprisingly affordable way to see a lot of the city without expending too much energy. Your hotel or guest house can book a reliable car for you.Model Booking
