Hindu gods are believed to have incarnated at these places various avatars. For Hindus, a pilgrimage to Haridwar will provide liberation from the endless cycle of death and rebirth.

The area around the Ganga River is made up of a fascinating and colorful collection of sadhus (holy men), pundits (Hindu priests), pilgrims, guides, and beggars. Every evening, the river comes alive with the magic of the aarti (worship with fire), as lamps are lit, prayers are offered, and small candles are floated down the river. A visit to this holy city will give you great insight into some of what makes India tick.

History and Mythology

Haridwar's long history can be traced all the way back to ancient Hindu texts such as the Rig Veda and The Mahabharata . During that time it was also referred to as Gangadwara, the gate of the Ganga River (where it descends from the mountains to the plains).

Hindu mythology says that a king named Bhagiratha brought the Ganga River to earth, with the help of Lord Shiva, to remove a curse and purify the ashes of his ancestors so they could go to heaven. Apparently, Lord Shiva released the river from his hair at Haridwar.

Sacred Har ki Pauri ghat is believed to have been built in the 1st century BC by Emperor Vikaramaditya in memory of his brother, Bharthari, who came to Haridwar to meditate by the river and passed away there. Legend has it that Lord Vishnu came and left his footprint on a stone wall at Har ki Pauri, giving rise to its name meaning "Footsteps of God".

How to Get There

Trains from major cities all over India stop at Haridwar on their way to Dehradun. For those coming from Delhi to Haridwar , it takes a minimum of four hours to get there by train or six hours by road.

The nearest airport is Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Haridwar. Travel time from the airport to Haridwar is about an hour. Expect to pay 1,500-2,000 rupees upwards for a private taxi, depending on the type of vehicle. Shubh Yatra Travels offers a reliable service that you can book in advance. Taxis are available at the airport. However, demand is high during peak season and drivers may quote inflated prices.

The best time to visit Haridwar is from October to March. Summers, from April to July, get very hot in Haridwar. Temperatures hover around 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). The clean water of the Ganges is really refreshing though, and May to June is regarded as peak season. The monsoon season , from July to September, is unsuitable to taking a dip in the Ganges as the river bank becomes unstable and currents are strong because of the rain. Winters, from November until February, get cold during the night. As a result, the water is chilly, but there's also mist in the air which makes Haridwar particularly scenic at that time of year.

The most famous festival to take place at Haridwar is the Kumbh Mela , held there once every 12 years. It draws tens of millions of pilgrims who come to bathe in the Ganges and be absolved of their sins. The next Kumbh Mela will be held in Haridwar in 2021.

In addition, many other religious Hindu festivals are celebrated in Haridwar. Some of the most popular ones are the Kanwar Mela (July or August) devoted to Lord Shiva, Somwati Amavasya (July), Ganga Dussehra (June), Kartik Poornima (November), and Baisakhi (April).

Haridwar's top attractions are its temples (particularly Mansa Devi temple , where the wish fulfilling goddess resides), ghats (steps leading down to the river), and Ganga River. Take a holy dip and cleanse your sins.

As the sun sets, head to Har ki Pauri ghat to witness the captivating Ganga Aarti (prayer ceremony) at around 6-7 p.m. every night depending on the time of year. Fiery lamps combined with the chanting of mantras , clanking of bells and enthusiastic crowd, is very powerful and moving.

Daksha Mahadev temple, the oldest temple in the area, also has some intriguing evening rituals. According to legend, Lord Shiva's first wife Sati jumped into the holy fire and died there, in response to her father spurning him.

Mohan Ji Puri Wale, near the police chowki at Har Ki Pauri, is the best place to go for aloo (potato) puri . The sweet ghee items at Mathura Walo ki Pracheen Dukan, near Thanda Kuan Moti Bazaar, always draw a crowd. Hoshiyar Puri, on Upper Road, serves yummy north Indian vegetarian cuisine at reasonable prices (the daal makhani and paneer masala are signature dishes). For somewhere more fancy, head to Ksheer Sagar at Pilibhit House, Ramghat.

Rajaji National Park offers unspoiled natural beauty only 10 kilometers (six miles) from Haridwar. Its eco-system is estimated to be 10 million years old, and a diverse range of wildlife can be seen there, including elephants.

Haridwar is one of the seven holiest cities in India, situated in Uttarakhand. It is located where the sacred river Ganga enters the Indo-Gangetic plains for the first time. Dotted with temples, ashrams and narrow lanes across the city, Haridwar is a famous Hindu temple town where millions of devotees come to take a dip in the holy Ganges. It's believed that taking a dip in the sacred Har Ki Pauri relieves one of all the sins.

The highlight of Haridwar is the famous Ganga Aarti held at the Har ki Pauri Ghat every evening. Thousands of devotees come together to pray to river Ganga and float diyas. Haridwar is one of the four cities (others being Ujjain, Nasik and Allahabad) that host the Kumbh Mela every twelve years. The Kanwar Mela is also organised here every year during saawan (rainy season). It is also the gateway to the Char Dham of Uttarakhand and acts as the base destination for some of the other tourist towns of Rishikesh and Devprayag. According to Hindu traditions, there are Panch Tirth (five pilgrimages) within Haridwar. These are Har ki Pauri ( Gangadwar ), Ghat ( Kushwart ), Kankhal, Mansa Devi Temple ( Bilwa Tirth ) and Chandi Devi Temple ( Neel Parvat ). Haridwar is also known globally for Ayurveda, meditation and yoga. Since it is a religious centre, alcohol and non-vegetarian food are not permitted here. The city is well connected by bus and trains but is especially busy during the yatra season from May to October.

History of Haridwar

Haridwar is a living example of one such historical city that hasn’t been erased by the tides of time. The city has been mentioned in several Hindu texts, scriptures, and books from the times of Buddha to the British invasion. It was ruled by the Maurya Empire (322-185 BCE), followed by the Kushan Empire (c. 1st-3rd centuries).

In the Archaeological surveys, it was found that terra cotta culture thrived in Haridwar between 1700 BCE and 1200 BCE. Haridwar also finds its mention in the travel journals of the famous ancient explorers. During King Harshavardhan's rule (590-647) when Chinese traveler, Hsuan Tsang visited India in 629 A.D., he cited Haridwar as ‘Mo-yu-lo’ and also mentioned that there was a temple called 'Gangadwara' which stood in the north of Mo-yu-lo.

During the reign of Emperor Jahangir (1596-1627) Thomas Coryat, an English traveler who visited the city mentioned it as ‘Haridwar’, the capital of Lord Shiva. The city was first connected with railways via Laksar, through branch line in 1886. In 2000, Haridwar became a part of the Haridwar district of Uttarakhand which was carved out as a separate state from Uttar Pradesh.

Mythology about Haridwar

As per Hindu mythology, during the Samudra Manthan or the churning of the ocean, the precious drops of elixir or Amrit which carried the boon of immortality were accidentally spilled at four sites i.e Ujjain , Nasik , Allahabad , and Haridwar. To commemorate this event, Kumbh Mela, and Maha Kumbh Mela , the mass Hindu pilgrimages of faith is celebrated once in three years and once in 12 years at one of the four places respectively. It is believed that Brahma Kund situated at Har Ki Pauri is the place where the drops of elixir fell.

6. Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple:

Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple, Hindu scriptures, including the Mahabharata, a significant tale unfolds at the very location where Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple now stands. King Daksha Prajapati, father of Sati, Shiva’s first consort, organized a grand yajna at this sacred site. Despite Sati’s feelings of insult as her father omitted to invite Shiva to the ritual, she attended the yajna. Witnessing Shiva being disregarded, Sati, unable to bear the dishonor, immolated herself in the Yajna Kunda . In response, Shiva, consumed by fury, dispatched his formidable Gaṇas, Virabhadra, and Bhadrakali, to the ritual. Virabhadra, appearing like a tempest, engaged in a fierce confrontation with the gods and mortals present, ultimately leading to the beheading of Daksha. Following this, at the behest of Brahma and other deities, Daksha was granted the head of a goat. This mythological event forms the backdrop of the spiritual and historical significance associated with Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple.

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.

Who Gains From Elon Musk’s Visit to China?

Tesla’s C.E.O. appears to have landed a deal that moves the company closer to bringing fully autonomous driving to a giant market. But Beijing is keen to exploit the visit for its own purposes.

Why Elon Musk went to China

Just days after Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to Beijing and warned China about unfair trade practices, Elon Musk landed in the Chinese capital. The Tesla boss’s meeting with China’s No. 2 official may have paid off: Musk reportedly cleared two obstacles to introducing a fully autonomous driving system in the world’s biggest car market.

The split screen again reveals the gap between Western diplomacy and corporate imperatives. Tesla has to stay committed to China even as it faces big headwinds — a conundrum that other multinationals also face, and one that Beijing is eager to exploit.

Musk is betting big on self-driving, and China is key. Tesla last week reported its worst quarter in two years as a price war hurts profit. Tesla shares have plummeted (though they’ve rebounded in recent days, and are up more than 8 percent in premarket trading) amid plans for big layoffs .

Musk has tried to reassure the market by pushing ahead with a low-cost model. Fully autonomous driving is also crucial. Musk told analysts last week that if investors don’t believe Tesla would “solve” the technological challenge that is autonomous driving, “I think they should not be an investor in the company.”

The carmaker faces challenges in its second biggest market. Heavily subsidized Chinese rivals are eating into sales, led by the Warren Buffett-backed BYD, which is vying with Tesla for the crown of world’s biggest E.V. maker.

Teslas are banned from many Chinese government sites because of concern about what data the American company collects. President Biden’s move to declare Chinese E.V.s a security threat probably won’t have made it any easier for Tesla in China.

But Musk seems to have received some good news. Beijing signaled that Tesla could roll out its self-driving system after the company passed a data security test ; the company reportedly will partner with the Chinese tech company Baidu, which will supply the mapping and navigation software for the cars.

(It also suggests that despite the speculation, targeting Tesla as retribution for a potential U.S. ban on TikTok hasn’t come to pass.)

Musk’s visit is a boost for the Chinese, too. Beijing used it to show that it still has leverage with foreign companies reliant on its market. Musk’s meeting with Li Qiang, the Chinese premier, was well-publicized across state media (and on Musk’s X) as an example of Western business playing by Beijing’s rules.

Tesla isn’t alone in bending over backward to stay in China. Many foreign carmakers are doubling down . Volkswagen has invested in companies like Horizon Robotics, a leading Chinese A.I. chip designer, and in Xpeng, a Chinese E.V. rival, even as non-German competitors say they need E.U. protection from cheap Chinese imports.

Of course, Musk has proved his doubters wrong plenty of times. But he and his foreign rivals may also have little choice.

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING

Antony Blinken meets with Arab leaders about the Israel-Gaza war. The secretary of state is holding talks with officials including Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, in Riyadh about issues such as Israeli hostages and a path to a Palestinian state. Meanwhile, the nonprofit World Central Kitchen said it would resume operations in Gaza , nearly a month after targeted Israeli military strikes there killed seven of its workers.

Shares in Philips soar after a smaller-than-expected sleep apnea settlement. The Dutch company’s stock jumped 45 percent on Monday after it set aside about €982 million ($1 billion) to cover costs tied to U.S. claims over faulty sleep apnea devices.

Taylor Swift’s latest album breaks records. “The Tortured Poets Department” debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart with the equivalent of 2.61 million albums sold in its first week and 891 million streams, the biggest ever streaming week for an album. Swift is now tied with Jay-Z for the most No. 1 albums by a solo artist despite some concerns about her oversaturating the market .

What a big shake-up means for Paramount’s deal talks

The chaotic corporate story of Paramount is about to take another dramatic twist. The media giant is expected to announce the departure of Bob Bakish, its C.E.O., as soon as Monday, even as Shari Redstone looks to sell her controlling stake.

Skydance — David Ellison’s film studio that has been in exclusive talks to do a deal with Paramount, the company behind the “Top Gun” film franchise and television assets like CBS and Nickelodeon — has put in a revised offer.

The exit of a top executive amid negotiations is unusual, and it could have implications for what happens next, DealBook’s Lauren Hirsch writes.

It puts renewed focus on a special committee overseeing the deal . A Skydance deal could personally net Redstone, who controls Paramount via the holding company National Amusements, a substantial premium for her stake, including more than $2 billion in cash .

That could invite extra legal scrutiny of a deal that’s already come under fire from several large investors who are pushing Paramount to consider a previously rejected all-cash approach from the private equity giant Apollo.

Parting with Bakish could raise tensions even further. “We’re in special committee land. Which means, from a legal standpoint, we are in church,” Jim Woolery, a veteran M.&A. lawyer and banker who has advised many special committees on deals, told DealBook. “This is not church-like — this is sloppy. This creates more risk.”

Bakish’s exit could weaken Paramount’s hand . Bakish would not be replaced by a C.E.O. but several executives would run an office of the C.E.O. Paramount’s financial footing is also in focus, with the company set to announce earnings on Monday as questions loom about the status of its pivotal cable deal with Charter , and investors clamoring for progress on its streaming ambitions.

The company is preparing for any eventuality, including no deal. It has laid out a contingency plan in which it remains independent, The Wall Street Journal reports .

T he clock is ticking. The Skydance exclusive-talks window is set to lapse on Friday (though it could be extended). And Apollo’s hand appears significantly stronger than when it last approached Paramount about a deal , given its potential partnership with Sony that would bring additional cash and operational expertise.

But an Apollo-Sony push could also face tough questions from shareholders, and even the board, including: What is the structure of their deal? And, how would they address the likely regulatory risk?

Betting on green in sports

Investors have been eager to get a piece of live sports, from stakes in teams to media rights.

Bruin Capital, the sports-focused private equity firm run by George Pyne, NASCAR’s former C.O.O., is taking a new approach, DealBook is first to report: buying a specialist in growing and maintaining stadiums’ natural grass.

Bruin is buying PlayGreen, the Netherlands-based owner of SGL, which provides technology including lighting and monitoring tools to grow natural turf. The deal values PlayGreen at about $120 million, DealBook hears.

SGL was created in 1997 to focus on sports . It scored its first big contract in 2004 with Arsenal, the English Premier League soccer club. It later expanded into the N.F.L., pro tennis (Wimbledon), cricket, horse racing and more, while surviving a trend toward artificial turf.

SGL works with about 520 stadiums, from the Green Bay Packers’ Lambeau Field in Wisconsin to Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. “We’ve proved we can grow grass under any circumstances,” Mark Trübenbacher, SGL’s C.E.O., told DealBook.

The investment is a bet on several things, Pyne said:

Technology: The company collects enough data on its clients’ turf to predict the growth of harmful fungus and other factors.

Player safety: Highly paid athletes need to be protected, given the prevalence of injuries like A.C.L. tears in football and soccer. “The surface to play on impacts the quality of the game and the safety of the game,” Pyne said. (Trubenbacher added that interest in SGL grew after Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending injury in September.)

Expansion, especially in the U.S.: More N.F.L. teams are weighing the adoption of natural grass or hybrid turf.

There’s an artificial intelligence angle, too. Trübenbacher said that with all the data that SGL’s systems collect, his company will eventually introduce A.I. to help automate turf management.

“We know exactly when we’ve reached ideal daylight,” he said. “In the future, we’ll know when to switch off the lights. In the past, that was set by a timer.”

“Most of what he has learned about A.I. comes from working with me over all these years.”

— Demis Hassabis , on his childhood friend, former colleague and now rival, Mustafa Suleyman of Microsoft. The two grew up in London and co-founded DeepMind, the artificial intelligence research lab (acquired by Google) where Hassabis is C.E.O. The duo are among the most consequential in the A.I. sector and their companies are in a high-stakes race to dominate the sector.

The week ahead

The Fed, jobs and a busy earnings calendar — here’s what to watch:

Tuesday: Amazon, AMD, Samsung, Eli Lilly, Volkswagen, Starbucks and McDonald’s are set to release earnings. Investors also will be watching the latest eurozone inflation data for clues to the likelihood that the European Central Bank will start cutting rates in June.

Wednesday: It’s Fed decision day. Economists expect the central bank to keep borrowing costs at their highest in decades well into the autumn. On the earnings front, KKR, Mastercard, Pfizer and Devon Energy are due to report.

Thursday: Apple, the Ozempic maker Novo Nordisk, Shell, Apollo, Live Nation, and Maersk report quarterly results.

Friday: It’s jobs day. Economists polled by Bloomberg forecast that employers added roughly 250,000 jobs in April, a drop from March, but enough to keep the unemployment rate at a relatively robust 3.8 percent.

PM to announce largest-ever military aid package to Ukraine on visit to Poland

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will announce the largest-ever military aid package to Ukraine on his visit to Poland.

PM to travel to Poland and Germany to cement security, trade and diplomatic ties with key European allies
He is expected to announce a £500 million boost for Ukraine and largest-ever provision of vital munitions, including some 400 vehicles, 1,600 munitions and 4 million rounds of ammunition
PM to discuss the threat from Russia and UK efforts to support European security with Prime Minister Tusk and the Nato Secretary-General in Warsaw

The Prime Minister will travel to Poland today [Tuesday 23 April] to announce a massive uplift in military support for Ukraine, including £500 million in additional military funding and our largest-ever delivery of vital equipment.

He will meet Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to discuss deepening UK-Poland relations, and the leaders will hold talks with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Warsaw on European security and support to Ukraine. The Prime Minister will then travel on to Germany to meet Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin.

Ukraine is facing an existential threat as Russia continues its barbaric invasion, risking the security and stability of all of Europe.

The £500 million additional funding announced today - which takes us to £3 billion in UK military aid for Ukraine this financial year - will be used to rapidly deliver urgently-needed ammunition, air defence, drones and engineering support. The drones will be procured in the UK and the funds will support a scale-up in domestic defence supply chains.

The Ministry of Defence will also send our largest-ever single package of equipment from the UK, designed to help push back the Russian invasion on land, sea and air. It includes:

60 boats including offshore raiding craft, rigid raiding craft and dive boats as well as maritime guns
More than 1,600 strike and air defence missiles, as well as additional Storm Shadow long-range precision-guided missiles.
More than 400 vehicles, including 160 protected mobility ‘Husky’ vehicles, 162 armoured vehicles and 78 all-terrain vehicles.
Nearly 4 million rounds of small arms ammunition.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said:

“Defending Ukraine against Russia’s brutal ambitions is vital for our security and for all of Europe. If Putin is allowed to succeed in this war of aggression, he will not stop at the Polish border.

“I am in Warsaw today to deepen ties with our Polish partners and commit critical new military support for Ukraine’s defence. Ukraine’s armed forces continue to fight bravely, but they need our support – and they need it now. Today’s package will help ensure Ukraine has what they need to take the fight to Russia.

“The United Kingdom will always play its part at the forefront of European security, defending our national interest and standing by our Nato allies.”

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said:

“This record package of military aid will give President Zelenskyy and his brave nation more of the kit they need to kick Putin out and restore peace and stability in Europe.

“The UK was the first to provide NLAW missiles, the first to give modern tanks and the first to send long-range missiles.

“Now, we are going even further. We will never let the world forget the existential battle Ukraine is fighting, and with our enduring support, they will win.”

In his first in-person meeting with new Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister will also seek to deepen UK-Poland ties across a range of issues.

Building on existing strong defence and security cooperation, he will offer to deploy an RAF Typhoon Squadron to carry out Nato Air Policing over Poland next year.

To further boost trade and support UK companies looking to invest in Poland, the Prime Minister will also announce today an intention to triple UK Export Finance funding available for Poland from £5 billion to £15 billion – our most generous offer to a partner country to date.

Bilateral trade between the UK and Poland has doubled in the last decade to reach £30.6 billion, with 45 million bottles of Scotch whisky bought in Poland last year and UK firms bidding for £5 billion worth of Polish opportunities across energy, defence, healthcare, and infrastructure.
