Eames House

Eames House

  • Historic buildings and sites
  • Pacific Palisades

Designing couple Charles and Ray Eames were known for their intelligence and their joie de vivre , both of which are apparent at the Eames House nestled in the Pacific Palisades. One of Southern California’s most beloved examples of modernist residential design, with its Mondrian-style color-block exterior and environmentally-sensitive siting, this home was the Eames’ residence from the time they moved in—on Christmas Eve of 1949—until their deaths in the '70s and '80s, respectively. Visitors park a couple blocks away and walk up the hilly driveway for a self-guided tour of the exterior ($10, reservations required). Interior tours are more difficult to come by: Members are invited for an appreciation day, always scheduled near the Eames’ June 20 anniversary. Anyone can book a one-hour personal tour ($275; $200 for members), but if you’re a real Eames fan, you may want to splurge on the picnic for four in the meadow ($750; $675 for members) and recreate the opening shots of the duo’s popular Powers of Ten video.

Schindler House

Schindler House

  • Things to do
  • Walks and tours
  • West Hollywood

Sleeping baskets on the roof, communal kitchens and a revolving-door salon of artists. Nope, not a Burning Man camp: This is the Schindler House, designed by Austrian architect Rudolf Schindler, who built it as a dual-family residence in which his family cohabited for a time with his frenemy and fellow influential architect Richard Neutra. A quiet, Japanese-influenced concrete building hidden behind a bamboo grove on a street of condos, this experiment in living now houses the Mak Center , a Vienna-based institute that runs a fantastic program of events in the space, including experimental fashion shows, innovative performance art and concerts of new, original compositions. During the week, visitors can wander around the empty house and imagine themselves part of the freewheeling LA bohemia of the 1920s and '30s.

Lummis House (El Alisal)

Lummis House (El Alisal)

  • Highland Park

Where would we be without those energetic civic boosters that built Los Angeles? The prolific Charles Fletcher Lummis founded the Southwest Museum, was an editor at the Los Angeles Times , and still managed to design this house (the name of which means “the Sycamore” in Spanish) on the banks of the Arroyo Seco. Its exterior is made almost entirely from river rock and the interior is heavily influenced by Pueblo Indian dwellings. Fans of today’s DIY movement will appreciate the rustic Craftsman charm of this home, which is furnished with hand-crafted wood pieces; it’s interesting to see how closely modern-day bohemian design mirrors that of Lummis House. The Historical Society of Southern California is now headquartered here, and it holds several Sunday afternoon programs a year, as well as an annual holiday open house in December.

Hollyhock House

Hollyhock House

This 1921, Mayan-inflected Frank Lloyd Wright house was originally built as a “progressive theatrical community” space by activist and oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. Today it’s the centerpiece of Barnsdall Park and is open for tours during the park’s popular Friday night wine tasting events . Rudolf Schindler, a protégé of Wright’s, was the overseeing architect on this project (unusual for Wright, who typically was on-site for all of his buildings) and by all reports it was a contentious building process, with the same delays and cost overruns familiar to anyone who’s attempted construction. After it was completed, frequent flooding of the living room in the short yet destructive rainy season and seismic concerns prevented Barnsdall from living in the gorgeous but impractical concrete and stucco house for long—though she did spend the rest of her life in a smaller house on the property, which the family called Olive Hill.

Sam Maloof House

Sam Maloof House

  • Inland Empire

Master woodworker Sam Maloof and his carpenters designed and built this lovely, thoughtful home piece by piece in his on-site workshop; no two door openings are the same here, and each joint is a wonder of craftsmanship. A MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, Maloof has had his iconic rocking chairs shown at the Smithsonian; he also designed the chairs that were used on-camera at the history-changing Nixon/Kennedy debates. Visitors can see some of this furniture, as well as the wide-ranging collection of arts-and-craft pieces that he and his wife of 50 years, Alfreda, amassed together. The garden, which he tended, and the house are both open for tours; if you ask, you might be able to peek into the workshop, where he continued building until his death in 2009 at the age of 93.

Greystone Mansion

Greystone Mansion

  • Beverly Hills

Is the Greystone Mansion haunted ? The society that runs it certainly wants us to think so—haunted house tours and a popular interactive play capitalize on the 1929 scandal in which the owner of the mansion, oil heir Ned Doheny, died in a mysterious murder-suicide with his boyhood friend and employee. Doheny’s father was mired in the Teacup Dome Scandal at the time, and the deaths meant that he was excused from testifying; rumors also abounded that Ned, who was married with children, was trying to cover up a same-sex affair. Either way, a tour of this 55-room Tudor estate is a good way to get a glimpse into the lives of LA’s historical 1%—costly slate clads the façade and walkways, the windows are leaded glass and guests were entertained in the bowling alley and two movie theaters. When the home was finished in 1929, it cost a reported $3M, making it the most expensive private home in the city at the time.

Gamble House

Gamble House

  • Cultural centers
  • price 2 of 4

Pasadena may think it owes much of its traditional Arts and Crafts style to Charles and Henry Greene, the brothers and architects responsible for designing many of the city’s landmark buildings, but really, they should be honoring Thomas Greene, the architects’ father. He was the one who decided on their profession, sending them off to MIT and then demanding they move out to Pasadena once they graduated. No word on whether he determined their style as well, but no matter who the progenitor, this graceful house originally built for one of the heirs of the Proctor & Gamble fortune remains one of the best examples of their work. Programming at the Gamble House is exceptional—there are tours that focus on things like the art glass or the details and joinery in the house, as well as more casual events like Brown Bag Tuesday, when visitors bring their own picnic lunch to eat on the grounds, followed by a 20-minute tour. However you decide to experience it, don’t miss the remarkable zig-zag staircase, a joyous element that adds a bit of fun to the perfection of the house.

Neutra VDL Research House

Neutra VDL Research House

  • Silver Lake

The original Neutra VDL Research House, a living laboratory for architect Richard Neutra’s theories on residential design, was built for $8,000 (including the site!) in 1932; it burned down in 1963 and two years later his son oversaw the rebuilding of an updated version. Neutra was something of a control-freak as a designer—he made recommendations to his clients that included the ideal flowers to display, and would occasionally make unannounced visits to see how, exactly, people were living in his homes. This remodel retains Neutra’s clarity of vision and is still a stunner. Today, this glass-walled paragon of modern design overlooking the Silver Lake Reservoir is an active part of LA’s design community and home to occasional art installations. Each Saturday, students in Cal Poly Pomona’s architecture program lead half-hour tours.

Avila Adobe

Avila Adobe

Visit this 1818 home to see what life was like in California when it was still governed by Mexico. This is the oldest standing residence in the city, built by wealthy cattle rancher Francisco Avila, whose extensive 4,439-acre land grant covered much of Beverly Hills and the Miracle Mile district. Built of tar from the La Brea Tar Pits , clay from the LA River and wood from the riverbank, this adobe structure is located near the Zanja Madre (in English, "mother ditch"), the original aqueduct that brought water to the LA River for El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de Los Angeles (the original name of our fair city). Though visitors only see about half of the original house, it’s well-preserved with an interesting mix of Spanish, Mission and ranchero influences.

Frank Gehry House

Frank Gehry House

  • Santa Monica

The neighbors love to hate it, carloads of architecture students drop by to gawk at it: This unexpected intersection of chicken wire, plywood, corrugated metal and traditional Santa Monica house is famed architect Frank Gehry’s actual place of residence. This year the AIA gave it the Twenty-Five Year Award, for a building that has stood the test of time for 25 to 35 years. Rumor has it that when Gehry had a party for his firm here, design enthusiast Brad Pitt knocked on the door and invited himself in. You probably shouldn’t do the same, but you can take it in from the outside. There are no official visiting hours or tickets, but the house is very easy to view from the street.

Feast your eyes on Curbed’s best LA home tours

From midcentury modern in Echo Park to Tudor Revival in West Hollywood

Curbed’s weekly original tours series takes you inside homes with eye-catching style and big personality—from modern tiny homes to pedigreed midcentury gems and everything in between.

Here, a collection of a collection some of our favorite tours from across LA, from a midcentury modern Ranch in Echo Park to an ornamented Spanish-style home graced with color in walkable Los Feliz.

View of the pool below, surrounded by trees and greenery, from the deck on the second floor of a home in LA.

An LA firm fashions a family’s hilltop oasis in Mar Vista, California

Not many architecture firms are bonafide one-stop shops. You’re more likely to find outfits that focus instead on a single aspect of a home’s design or construction, its interiors, or its landscaping. But in the case of Marmol Radziner , a design-build practice with offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco, that’s exactly the 360-degree experience they offer their clients. And Marmol Radziner COO Todd Jerry and his family would know—their home in Mar Vista, a Los Angeles neighborhood a stone’s throw from the Pacific, embodies the firm’s ethos.

Living room and kitchen interior, light wood ceiling with beams, large white couch on a white rug, a wooden table with two metal chairs at it. Wooden cabinets in the kitchen with teal green blacksplash. Bookshelf filled with trinkets, a stack of records on the floor.

Falling for a pristine midcentury home—and each other

Conventional wisdom cautions against working with relatives—let alone someone you are dating. But for Erik Allen and Leanne Ford conventional wisdom doesn’t seem to apply. Allen is the co-founder and co-CEO of Buck Mason , a menswear company that produces modern takes on classic clothes. Ford is the founder and creative force behind Leanne Ford Interiors . When Allen asked her to work interior magic in his Echo Park rental, Ford created a place so appealing, she says: “If I didn’t know him and I walked into that place, I’d have a crush on him.”

Emerald green marbled kitchen, with grey herringbone floors. An island has black marble around the top and sides, with three barstools, green leather and gold legs. Three gold pendants hang above the island. Gold hardware used throughout.

A bachelor embraces color and quirk in the Hollywood Hills

Anyone who knows the Golden State understands that the 381 miles (give or take) between Berkeley and Los Angeles offers a vastly different design outlook and popular aesthetic. Singer sought out a fellow transplant to make his new house feel like his home. Singer was ready for a change, and he got one. The tech entrepreneur had spent 10 years in the Bay Area, first attending University of California, Berkeley, and then working for a string of start ups. When one of those businesses was acquired by Twitter, he decided it was time to move on from the region. The native Canadian was weighing a move to either New York City or Los Angeles, and when the scales tipped toward SoCal, he found a modern home in the Hollywood Hills that was built in 1949.

Pinks walls in a bedroom. Iron bed has a blush colored quilt, with lots of neutral and pink colored pillows on the bed. A white door is open with a dream catcher on it. A scarf hangs on the wall.

In West Hollywood, silver screen glamour meets modern cool

“Ten years ago, when I was 21 years old, I was just starting my career working in visual services at Fred Segal. I used to drive by this building every day and wish I could live here,” says homeowner Marcus Austin-Paglialonga. “I thought that if you could do that, you would have made it.” The turreted building of his dreams was designed by architect Leland A. Bryant. In the 1920s, Bryant was a prolific architect who built a wealth of apartments and homes in Los Angeles, most in the distinctive, romantic chateau style that’s still associated with the city.

Living room painted bright blue, with white ceilings and beams. a green curtain on the window, piano in the room and brown leather couches with pink pillows.

Interior designer’s Los Feliz Spanish Revival home embraces the eclectic

A little more than ten years ago, Mariah O’Brien was at a creative crossroads, and the direction she chose would determine her career path. In a single day, she read for a role on Dawson’s Creek and pitched a proposal for a $300,000 interior design project. The chance to join Dawson and Pacey floated away, but the interior design job came through. And thus O’Brien, who had worked as a model and actress since she was a teenager, became a full-time interior designer in 2005. Since then, she’s worked on many houses. But the most colorful and eclectic projects she’s completed have been her personal homes, and she shares the latest with her family in Los Feliz.

Eclectic living room image, white walls, cream colored pretty marble fireplace. Cream colored chairs and couch, natural wood coffee table with lots of books covering it. A black table sculpture and colorful painting in the background.

Inside Merry Norris’s art-filled sanctuary in the Hollywood Hills

Though 1984 is oft considered an important year for Los Angeles, it was also a significant year for the city’s biggest public art advocate, Merry Norris. LA’s brand-new Museum of Contemporary Art, which she was helping build from scratch, was taking shape in its permanent space on Downtown’s Bunker Hill. The colorful exuberance of the Summer Olympics put LA in the global spotlight right as she was appointed to lead the city’s Cultural Affairs Commission. And 1984 was also the year that Norris found her remarkable home. High ceilings and total privacy were what Norris initially had in mind when she started looking for a house, envisioning herself in one of the famous modern residences in the Hollywood Hills.

Watch this space for more peeks inside gorgeous homes in LA, across the U.S., and around the world.

Welcome to Demi Lovato’s Trippy Modern Farmhouse

By Sydney Gore

Photography by Jenna Peffley

Styled by Kat Bell

demi lovato living room

Demi Lovato may be as famous as they come, but stars, they say, are just like us. After spending one too many months cooped up during the early days of quarantine, the award-winning singer-songwriter and actor felt ready for a new home in Los Angeles that checked all the boxes. So, as a real estate frenzy was taking over the country, Lovato was also in the midst of a pandemic house hunt.

With six bedrooms and seven bathrooms spread across 8,500 square feet, this Studio City modern farmhouse provided the blank canvas that Lovato had always dreamed about. Another bonus was the theater and, of course, the backyard swimming pool. “I love the outdoor space,” she explains over Zoom. “I also loved that it had everything that I needed—there were a lot of houses that were beautiful, but there wasn’t [another] house that could have a room for glam, a room for my fittings, a room for my studio… Also, the vibe was really beautiful, and I just fell in love with it when I saw it.”

It was here that Lovato conceptualized Holy Fvck, her eighth full-length album with Island Records. It’s a culmination of the 30-year-old’s rebirth and also marks a return to her rock and pop-punk roots. Designing this house was a process that paralleled that personal journey. This time around, Lovato wanted every inch of the space to fully embody her personality—and the sense of fluidity that continues to shape her identity.

Incidentally, Lovato’s head of security connected her with Argyle Design founders Kat Bell and James Drew. As soon as the trio met, it felt like a perfect fit. “It’s totally different because the last house that I owned for myself—I didn’t have a vision for it,” she explains. “It was just this blank, white, minimalistic yet cozy home… I really loved living there, but at the same time, it felt empty.”

Bell emphasizes how establishing a level of trust with Lovato was a particularly unique, and special, experience. “Demi is a dream client for anyone to have,” she says. Overall, it was a super collaborative process, as the pair translated Lovato’s mood board into each room. This meant leaning into maximalism and pairing unexpected pieces together to create a spectrum of distinct vibes. “The house has great energy,” Drew says. “I’m not usually one that believes in that kind of stuff, but one thing I will say is doing this house was so much fun.”

Of course, this was all part of Lovato’s grand plan—she wanted her home to have good hosting energy filtered through an immersive experience. She gets excited when disclosing some of the provocative Easter eggs hidden around the house, such as mushroom-shaped stools, butt vases, and salt and pepper shakers shaped like boobs. Bell refers to these items as “LOL moments” that are a reflection of Lovato’s playful personality, noting, “We wanted to make sure that anywhere you look there’s this piece that you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, what is that?’”

Eva Seta, director of communications at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, was hired to curate the artwork, which includes pieces by emerging artists from underrepresented communities such as Monica Kim Garza, Lilian Martinez , Hannah Epstein , Yasmine Nasser Diaz , and Lola Rose Thompson . “I wanted it to be a very queer environment,” Lovato explains. “There’s a lot of female empowerment as well, so keeping pieces that are representative of the female figure was very important to me. We live in a world that shuts you out of honoring female bodies, so I want it to be in your face in my house.”

To that point, Lovato insisted on having her very own glam room. Beyond the eye-catching embellishments, like pieces of Pierre Paulin and Michael Ducaroy furniture, a Murano chandelier, a custom Gustaf Westman mirror, and a neon sign that reads “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” the interior also features a fully functioning shampoo bowl from a hair salon. “I used to have a wine cellar, but I don’t drink wine, so now it holds a lot of wigs,” Lovato adds. (While she has been open about the ups and downs of her recovery journey , Lovato announced her commitment to full sobriety in December 2021 following the release of the docuseries Dancing with the Devil .)

There are some other unconventional spaces, like the “Shroom Room,” where Lovato’s guests can spread out on a rainbow custom-made modular sectional set. There’s also a pair of Tongue chairs by Pierre Paulin with shimmering silver walls and curtains. An interactive cloud lamp by Rania Peet hangs from a mural ceiling by Jen Stark, which brings the whole room to life; Lovato enjoys listening to music there while watching the cloud change colors.

The lavender-hued dining room adopts a more aquatic tone, with fixtures like Uchiwa wall sconces and a chandelier from Entler Studio reminiscent of tentacles. To make the kitchen feel more grounded, Bell and Drew paired Gucci’s Lilies wallpaper with wood finishes and brass details, as well as other earth-toned elements. The living room is arguably bolder, with a Desede DS-600 Nonstop sofa wrapped around a bonsai tree coffee table and zebra onyx crystal lamps.

While the house already had solid interior architecture, the real heavy lifting went into transforming the pool house into a recording studio that doubles as a sacred space. The result is a creative environment with soft textures embodied by objects like an Upholstered Stitch Stool by Eny Lee Parker and a Cold Picnic rug. Since Lovato was inspired by crystals, Bell and Drew sourced a vintage 1960s Italy Vistosi chandelier with iridescent Murano glass discs for the ceiling. That same spiritual energy can be felt in Lovato’s primary bedroom, which is whimsical with a touch of rock and roll.

The backyard is another universe of its own thanks to its pool, hot tub, fire pit, outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill, and a secluded patio. There’s also a special area designated for Lovato’s dogs, Batman and Cinderella, secured with netting, so the pups can safely play outside without the threat of local hawks and coyotes. (Elsewhere, she installed miniature tables with a feeding station for the neighborhood squirrels.)

After achieving everything that she set out to do in designing this space, Lovato couldn’t be more satisfied with the results. “Home to me is where I can rest easy and where I can stay—even if there’s a quarantine or lockdown—and  feel completely fulfilled,” she concludes. “I have no reason to leave, this is exactly everything that I’ve wanted in a house.”

The entryway evokes a calm energy with a scarce number of objects. Untitled RL032 by Ko Kirk Yamahira hangs above an Ekstrem chair. A curvaceous vase is placed on the Italia travertine table with a black Alvar Aalto stool. An Ettore doorstop by Magis can be spotted in the corner.

“I was in a place where I wanted everything in my house to be super trippy,” Demi Lovato says. “I wanted it to be kind of psychedelic and super vibey, but I also wanted it to have good hosting energy for when I have people over.”

Lovato admits that she doesn’t spend much time in the reception room but wanted it to be dramatic since it’s the first room people see when they walk into the modern house. The Tangled wallpaper by Porter Teleo was a fitting choice. A Tentazione sofa by Mario Bellini in yellow velvet, Tulip stools by Eero Saarinen, and LCW chairs by Eames for Herman Miller in a black finish can all be seen. White Pumps by Hannah Epstein is mounted above the mantel. A Saber rug from House of Hackney is on the floor.

Argyle Studio incorporated fish and seashells into the dining room decor to create an underwater ambiance. A leopard print rug from Safavieh can be spotted under the Warren Platner dining set. The living room features a Desede DS-600 Nonstop sofa, MR20 armchairs by Mies van der Rohe, D’urbino and Lomazzi Piumino lounge chairs, and a set of nesting tables by Gianfranco Frattini for Cassina. The bonsai coffee table is by Willy Daro.

A set of Azalea mink bar stools from CB2 can be seen at the island, with Scraplights by Graypants hanging from above.

Lovato refers to this corner of the kitchen, with a set of Mario Bellini chairs and a Tulip table by Eero Saarinen, as the breakfast nook. A painting by Lillian Martinez is mounted on the wall, which is covered in Gucci’s Lilies wallpaper. This iridescent pendant from Petite-Friture is a nod to the psychedelic effects sprinkled throughout the space.

Lovato spends a lot of time getting ready in the glam room. Argyle Studio sourced a Curvy mirror from Gustaf Westman, Ribbon chair by Pierre Paulin, Togo sofa by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset, and Kashmir rug by Cape Original.

“My favorite room in the house has been and probably will always be the Shroom Room,” Lovato says. “It’s such a fun experience when you walk into it and spend time in it.”

The powder room feels majestic thanks to its Phantasia wallpaper from House of Hackney, which puts clouds of mushrooms and dragons on display.

A Barcelona-style daybed is stationed in front of a Damien Hirst painting and a Vladimir Kagan lamp in this hallway, where guests have a stunning view of the Seashell pendant chandelier by Verner Panton. Lovato is particularly obsessed with this painting, Summer Volleyball, by Monica Kim Garza.

Bell and Drew’s vision for the primary bedroom was whimsical, with an “ethereal heaven-type feel to it” and a touch of rock and roll. They sourced a Cleopatra Chaise Lounge by Geoffrey D. Harcourt RDI for Artifort and a pair of Beluga chairs by Atra to match the custom bed platform. The silver bronze cheetah and Kartell Colonna side table add some excitement.

bathroom

Lovato wanted the primary bathroom to be very zen, which was achieved thanks to pieces like an opalescent chandelier by Carlo Nason. “It was really important to me to have an area that I could really, really relax in,” Lovato notes. Custom ottoman upholstered in House of Hackney’s Tigre velvet.

Lovato refers to this room as her “overflow closet,” where she keeps stuff that “I don’t actually wear, but I don’t know what to do with it.”

If the Murano glass chandelier dangling from the ceiling doesn’t make it obvious, the studio design takes inspiration from crystals. “The studio is my place where I create, it’s my little safe haven, and I wanted it to be comfortable and zen, and fun and creative at the same time,” Lovato says. A pair of velvet Eero Saarinen executive chairs and an upholstered stitch stool by Eny Lee Parker are placed around a rug from Cold Picnic. The studio build-out was by Rob Rettberg.

Lovato’s beloved Yorkipoos are living their best lives in the five-star puppy lounge. “It’s completely netted, so that they can go out there anytime they want and feel totally safe,” she adds.

On the patio, a set of pink Roly Poly chairs by Faye Toogood are set around a glass table with a brass base; it is one of Lovato’s go-to breakfast spots.

“I take a lot of meetings there—a lot of brainstorming has come from those two couches,” Lovato says about this pair of CB2 love seats on the patio.

Lovato’s favorite feature in the backyard is the theater screen that pulls down so she can watch movies outside from wherever she wants. “You can watch them from the bed, from inside the hot tub, or in the pool, and it’s a really cool vibe,” she adds.

Once you've seen where the stars shop, where they eat, where they surf and where they party, you'll want to see where they live. A variety of Hollywood homes tours provide ample opportunities to spot homes owned by the rich and famous. You probably won't see the celebs themselves, but you can snap pics of the homes affiliated with A-listers like Sandra Bullock, Tom Cruise, Bruno Mars and Halle Berry. Also, expect to see facades that once housed the likes of Lucille Ball, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. Along with the stars' abodes, buses usually make stops at the Hollywood Walk of Fame , the Sunset Strip and Rodeo Drive .

Some recent travelers were disappointed because many homes are at the end of long driveways or behind hedges. Be sure to check the weather for the day: Extreme heat or a sudden shower can put a damper on an open-top bus ride.

Starline Tours and Ultimate Hollywood Tours in particular earn high praise from past star-seekers. Some tour companies will pick you up near the TCL Chinese Theatre ; others will scoop you up directly from your hotel. Whichever you choose, you should be willing to part with your cash: A guided tour of movie stars' homes start at $39 per adult and last about two hours, depending on the company. Tours are usually available between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily.

#1 Griffith Observatory and Griffith Park

Griffith Observatory sits on the south face of Mount Hollywood and overlooks the Los Angeles basin. Its location gives visitors impressive views of the surrounding area, which many rave about. But there's more than just a pretty photo-op here. The observatory hosts fascinating exhibitions and features a top-notch planetarium.

Most recent visitors cited the beautiful setting as Griffith Observatory's main draw, though the free entry was certainly a bonus. However, you will have to pay between $6 and $10 to see the planetarium shows. Griffith Observatory is open Tuesdays to Fridays from noon to 10 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. A gift shop and cafe can be found on-site as well. For information about parking, public transportation and other information to plan your visit, check out Griffith Observatory's  website .

3 Mid-Century Homes You Can Visit In Los Angeles

As anyone with an appreciation for great architecture knows, photographs, no matter how stunning, only tell part of the story. To truly appreciate a great building you have to experience it – how it is sited in the landscape, the flow of spaces and play of natural light, the contrast of finishes and textures. It’s not just about how a building looks, but how it feels, how it works as a space for living.

Fortunately, many significant Mid-century modern homes have been preserved as house museums and are open to the public for tours throughout the year. Others, which continue to be inhabited as private residences are opened by their owners once a year for events such as Modernism Week in Palm Springs, California, and Sydney Open, in Sydney, Australia.

Here are three significant Mid-century modern homes you can tour and experience in Los Angeles,to gain a full understanding of the innovation and beauty of their design.

Eames House, Pacific Palisades, California

The Eames House, Case Study House #8 , was designed by Charles and Ray Eames, who moved into the house in 1949 and lived there for the remainder of their lives. Sensitively sited in a beautiful meadow, the house offered the couple a space where work, play, life and nature could coexist. The interiors remain intact, much as they were in the Eames’ lifetimes.

You can book a self-guided exterior tour of the Eames House, a full interior tour and even a picnic for four in the Eames’ beloved meadow. For more information check the  Eames Foundation  site.

Stahl House, Hollywood, California

(Photo via James Vaughan )

Case Study House #22, the Stahl House is sited on a cliff high above Hollywood and its pioneering use of glass and steel in its geometry and symmetry reflects the gridlines of the streets below. The iconic house, completed in 1960, was designed for Buck and Carlotta Stahl by ingenious young architect Pierre Koenig, the only architect the Stahl’s approached daring enough to consider the cantilevered foundation that is so awe-inspiring today.

For tour reservations, visit the Stahl House site.

Richard Neutra VDL House, Los Angeles, California

VDL house - richard and dion neutra - michael locke - flickr

In 1940, Viennese-American architect Richard Neutra received a no-interest loan from Dutch philanthropist Dr C. H. Van Der Leeuw to build a truly radical glass house with rooftop and balcony gardens to accommodate his office and two families on a small 60 x 70 foot lot. Neutra named it the VDL Research House after his benefactor and over a 30-year period hundreds of significant architectural projects on four continents were designed here.

Tours are available of the VDL House every Saturday from 11am to 3pm, for details visit the Neutra VDL site.

In Los Angeles, a Craftsman-Style Beauty Receives a Colorful and Cozy Update

“Warm and inviting—that was the mantra here,” says designer Ashley Lavonne Walker.

Deane, a gallerist, and Beals, a software entrepreneur, were based in New York’s Hudson Valley when Deane was tapped to help open a Los Angeles location for the international contemporary art space Lisson Gallery . During a business trip, she spent a day checking out L.A. real estate listings. The first house she visited was a 1904 Craftsman beauty by Samuel Tilden Norton , the architect behind such local landmarks as Griffith Park’s Greek Theatre and the Wilshire Boulevard Temple. The home had many of its original features intact, including a cross-gabled roof, wood-paneled rooms, and stained glass windows. At 6,000 square feet, it had plenty of space for their growing family (they have a young son, now 4, and an 18-month-old daughter), for working at home, and for hosting relatives. “It already had another offer so we had to make a decision without Chris even seeing the house,” Deane says. “It seemed crazy but we knew it was so special that he trusted me.”

Step Inside This Gorgeous Craftsman

When they met the designer, they were impressed by her reputation as a talent who is as creative as she is organized. She also has a deep understanding of architecture, having graduated from Syracuse University’s School of Architecture. “Ashley is totally unflappable,” says Reath Design’s Frances Merrill, with whom Lavonne Walker worked for more than three years. “She is calm under pressure.”

The couple’s requirements were straightforward: maintain the character of the house while introducing a functional arrangement for a young family. “Kaeli wanted it to feel warm and inviting—that was the mantra here,” says the designer. “My process begins with first understanding the architecture of the room. I want to get a sense of what the house should be and then bring it to that place.”

bed has slate blue sheets and an olive green blanket, upholstered armchair, two arched niches flank a fireplace, one niche with writing desk and chair, sconces, curtained windows, two rugs

Art was an important consideration in the project, specifically the Latin American works that Deane has collected for years. “We wanted it to feel like there was a conversation between the art and the furniture,” Lavonne Walker says. To that end, Deane’s most cherished artwork, a painting by Cuban American artist Carmen Herrera, is now perfectly at ease in the living room over the mantel, where it hangs above vintage Belgian and Italian furniture from the 1940s to the ’70s. A series of collages by Brazilian artist Nino Cais complements the soothing energy of the primary bedroom. In the family room, the blues and grays in the large Tiffany Alfonseca painting echo the palette of the textiles in the space.

Inspired by a piece by the Austrian modernist Josef Frank, Lavonne Walker covered the living room’s sofa in a patchwork of cotton velvets. In the dining room, a Colefax and Fowler botanical wallpaper sets off the paneled woodwork and cabinetry, painted cream. “When someone really does their research, it helps with design,” Bullard says. “They are better able to layer and work in different textures. That is something Ashley really took away from here.”

powder room with a brown background leaf pattern wallpaper, vintage sconces, a pedestal sink in front of a tall window with stained glass

Color plays a large role in the design of the house, allowing for the varied furnishings to come together cohesively. In the primary bedroom, with its 18-inch-deep alcoves flanking the original mantel, Lavonne Walker painted the walls in a cool clay green that highlights the sculptural quality of the space. She often repeats hues from room to room: Ocher appears both in the color of the walls in the guest room and in the rug of the family room. The living room curtains’ rust shade carries over to the hue of the breakfast room’s Naugahyde-covered bench cushions.

Creating personality and staying true to the spirit of a historic house is a tall order, but Lavonne Walker pulled it off with panache in her company’s first major project. “It was honestly so easy working with Ashley,” Deane says. “Practically everything she suggested I immediately loved. On the rare occasions I had feedback, Ashley listened carefully and sent through other amazing ideas to consider.”

Emma Roberts Has Piece Of Montclair In Her Grown-Up Los Angeles Dollhouse

Emma Roberts' Los Angeles home is all things vintage.

Emma Roberts loves Grayford's, a vintage clothing and antique shop in Montclair.

home tour los angeles

And not without a little piece from her favorite vintage store in Montclair.

The 33-year-old actress gave Grayford's on Bloomfield Avenue a shoutout in her home tour with "Architectural Digest."

The "American Horror Story" star explains she got the framed, red, "Hopalong Cassidy" button down from Grayford's and knew from the moment she saw it that it would one day hang in her son Rhodes' room.

Grayford's has been around since 1931 and is owned by history buffs with a penchant for curating vintage apparel, antiques, and more, its website says.

Roberts has many other relics from her childhood in Rhinebeck, NY smattered throughout her "grown-up dollhouse" — like her timeout chair and collection of dolls.

Dragon Kim Foundation offers 2 CdM students fellowship

Newport Beach students Preston Kousoulas, 17, and Evan Razmjoo, 16, both of whom attend Corona Del Mar High School, have been welcomed as members of the 2024 Fellowship Class of the Orange County-based Dragon Kim Foundation.

The nonprofit is a social entrepreneurship incubator for high school youth. Kousoulas and Razmjoo will be given three weekends of leadership training and up to $5,000 from the foundation to implement a social service project in the community this summer.

The duo plan to launch “CodeQuest Kids,” a project driven by their passion for coding that aims to equip underserved children with an introduction to coding skills. By conducting coding boot camps they will introduce students in grades six through eight to the world of programming and teach them to craft their own 2D video games.

The fellowship was founded in 2015 in honor of the late Dragon Kim, a talented young musician, athlete and scholar who wanted to help others through positive change. To learn more, visit dragonkimfoundation.org .

Sherman Library & Gardens’ Volunteer Assn. is hosting the Spring Garden Art Faire on Saturday, May 11.

The event, which will feature the sounds of harp music performed by members of the Orange County Harp Troupe, showcases not only the garden in its spring glory but themed artwork in a wide variety of media.

The Sherman’s volunteer group that’s known as the Sowers will present one-of-a-kind spring items for people and pets, with 100% of proceeds benefiting Sherman Library & Gardens. Children can create a birdhouse at the craft table and make a Mother’s Day card to take home.

The event is free with garden admission, which is free for members and $5 for nonmembers.

Sherman Library & Gardens is located at 2647 E. Coast Hwy. in Corona del Mar.

20th annual Spring Garden and Outdoor Living Tour set for May 19

Tickets are on sale now for the Rossmoor Woman’s Club’s 20th annual Spring Garden and Outdoor Living Tour, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 19.

The fundraiser will feature six Rossmoor homes, two elementary schools, floral demonstrations, a plant sale, raffle and more.

One of the featured gardens, a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat, is inspired by the owner’s antiques collections as well as her pilgrimage to the famous Camino de Santiago in Europe. Another home employs murals, plants and statuary in homage to its owner’s late spouse and in appreciation of friends and family who have helped her through her grief.

Other gardens on the tour feature amenities such as pools, bars and barbecue areas for family-oriented entertainers, a putting green and a hot tub for retirees seeking low-maintenance. The tour this year also includes vegetable and herb gardens tended by pupils at Richard Henry Lee and Rossmoor elementary schools under the auspices of the Orange County Master Gardeners Program.

The self-guided tour includes an outdoor marketplace at Arbor Village. Tickets, which contain addresses and a map to all the homes, are $20 per person. They may be purchased in advance from any club member, from a selection of local merchants or on the club website, rossmoorwomansclub.org .

Jim Harbaugh Lives in an Recreational Vehicle Down by the Ocean

  • Author: Stephen Douglas

In this story:

JIm Harbaugh really likes The Rockford Files . So much so that he is currently living in an RV on a California beach just like Jim Rockford did in the 1970's television series. If only Jim Rockford had considered a career change before he was falsely imprisoned at San Quentin.

Harbaugh recently took a Los Angeles Chargers camera crew on a tour of his Quantum. which has been parked in Huntington Beach for the last two months. Between the location and the lack of distractions, Harbaugh appears to be loving life, watching The Rockford Files (and Joe Dirt ?) every night before his early bedtime.

New Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman also lives in the same RV park, but in a much bigger 2019 Newmar VENTANA. Here's Roman's very diplomatic description of Harbaugh's rig: “I’ve been in here. Very cozy. I mean, you can drive this down the road and park it pretty much anywhere. So there’s a lot of advantages to having one this size."

every guy watching this just said “hell yeah” pic.twitter.com/Ir7Xpyv0VC — Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) April 16, 2024

It must have taken some serious willpower not to call it "cute." Of course, camper life isn't all glamour, even in a VENTANA, no matter how many American flags are flying proudly. Because wherever you're parked, someone has to take care of business. Here's Harbuagh on what sounds like a surprisingly proud moment in his life:

"Nothing will make you feel more like a dad than when you dispose of the waste. That was a moment. Seminal moment for me. Felt like a real dad."

Unfortunately for everyone, Harbaugh's family has now arrived in California, so he has to move back into a house that doesn't have wheels. We'll see how long that lasts before Jim Rockford and the cool ocean breeze comes calling for Harbaugh.

You can watch the full tour of Harbaugh and Roman's RV's on YouTube .
