Hospital Bag Checklist: What to Pack for Delivery

profile picture of Paula Kashtan

You’ve probably spent the past several months eagerly awaiting the day you finally get to meet baby—and you’ve spent lots of time planning. You’ve stocked up on all the baby gear you’ll need, decorated the nursery and figured out how to properly install your infant car seat . But don’t forget one of the most important remaining third trimester to-dos : Deciding what to pack in your hospital bag. Wondering where to start? While you don’t want to leave out any essentials, there’s also no reason to overdo things. This is where The Bump baby hospital bag checklist comes in handy. Read on to learn when to pack that hospital bag and what to put in it.

When to Pack a Hospital Bag

While timing is important, you do have some flexibility in deciding when to pack your hospital bag. But, like so many other things, this will vary from person to person based on individual circumstances. “If a woman has a high-risk pregnancy and her OB feels she may go into labor early—for example, an expectant mom of twins—I’d recommend packing at around 35 weeks,” says Nicole Randazzo-Ahern , MD, medical director of the newborn nursery at MassGeneral Hospital for Children. “In other cases, I’d recommend somewhere between 37 and 38 weeks. This way your basics are there should labor begin early, and modifications can always be made if needed.”

Of course, if you want to get a jumpstart on things, by all means start earlier—when to pack a hospital bag is up to you! But it’s a good idea not to leave it for later than 38 weeks: You want to have that hospital bag ready to go whenever baby decides to show up.

Hospital Bag Checklist for Mom

On average, moms who deliver vaginally stay in the hospital for one to two days, Randazzo-Ahern says. If you deliver via c-section , you’d be looking at closer to three or four days. Keep the potential length of stay in mind as you select what to pack in your hospital bag. A tip for the thrifty: Ask your hospital what they provide for moms, and take those things off your hospital bag checklist. Otherwise, find deals and offers on the items you’ll need , and use the following hospital bag checklist for mom.

Photo ID, insurance info, hospital forms and birth plan (if you have one)

Eyeglasses (if you wear them), cell phone and charger.

Consider bringing your regular USB charger cable and a portable power bank. Our Pick: This best-selling one from Amazon means business in case you can’t find an outlet.

Two or three pairs of warm, non-skid socks

You’ll want these for walking the halls before and after labor ). Our Pick: These super-fuzzy pairs are snugly, but if you prefer something more discreet, try these short hospital socks that you can reuse for your postpartum workout classes .

A warm robe or sweater

Make sure it’s one you don’t mind sacrificing to the cause. Our Pick: Amazon carries options under $30 .

Because hospitals are very dry! Our Pick: Check out this natural beeswax balm from Burt’s Bees .

Headband or ponytail holder

Avoid clips—they’ll probably poke you. Our Pick: This versatile headband has thousands of rave reviews on Amazon and will wick away sweat—because there will be sweat.

Sugar-free hard candy or lozenges

These will help keep your mouth moist during labor. (Candy with sugar will make you more thirsty.) Our Pick: We like these dry-mouth drops for their minty-fresh scent.

Non-perishable snacks

This one’s totally based on preference, but get enough so you don’t run out, and don’t forget change for the vending machines.

Two maternity bras

Make sure they don’t have underwire. You’ll also want nursing pads —whether or not you plan to nurse, you’ll appreciate the support and leak protection. Our Pick: Our readers love these seamless bras .

Toiletries and personal items

Including a hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, contact lens case and solution. (Remember, travel-sized products are your friends!) Our Pick: Here’s a smart travel kit with most of the hospital bag essentials.

Loose, lightweight clothing

Hospitals are often hot. (Plus, don’t forget to pack sleepwear .)

Comfortable going-home clothes

You’ll want these in six-month maternity sizes, and flat shoes (or just wear the clothes you came in—they’ll probably still fit).

I recommend packing less —I wore the hospital gown the whole time I was there. Why not? It’s comfortable, easy to breastfeed in, and any outfits you bring you have to take home and clean.

Optional Hospital Bag Checklist Items for Mom

Very light reading.

Think magazines and newspapers, not War and Peace .

You’ll need these to listen to music or your labor playlist on your phone. Now may just be the time to splurge on rechargeable earbuds because the last thing you need are tangled wires. Our Pick: Rechargeable AirPods

A diffuser (if you use one)

Don’t forget your favorite soothing essential oils (these can help when those contractions start to really kick in!).

The hospital will probably supply a very thin, small one, so it may be nice to have your own.

If yours is too bulky, consider getting an inexpensive one. Our Pick: This travel blowdryer from Amazon under $25 .

A comfy pillow from home

Include a case that can get ruined, in a pattern distinguishable from hospital white.

A few pairs of maternity underwear

Pick options that can get ruined. (The hospital will have disposable pairs, which some women find handy.) If you’re prepping a c-section hospital bag, ensure you have options designed for your incision’s recovery. Our Pick: This low-rise postpartum underwear is designed with your incision’s recovery in mind.

A postpartum recovery essentials kit

The hospital will provide pads and ice packs, but many brands offer specifically designed postpartum kits. Our Pick: Check out this best-selling recovery kit from Frida with products specifically designed for postpartum moms.

Breastfeeding pillow

Our Pick: One of our favorites is the Boppy Original Nursing Pillow and Positioner .

Matching hospital outfits for you and baby

Our Pick: Baby Be Mine sells some Instagram-worthy mommy-and-me sets .

I really wish I had brought a breastfeeding pillow! Being a first-time mom, I didn't understand how important they were. But I was in the hospital for five days and my arm went sore trying to breastfeed—maneuvering the hospital pillows got really old!

Hospital Bag Checklist for Baby

You know what you’ll likely need, but figuring out what to pack in a hospital bag for baby can be a little less intuitive. Here’s the good news: When you’re just starting out in life, you don’t need all that much. Here are the essentials you’ll want to add to your baby hospital bag:

Approved infant car seat

Our Pick: The Chicco KeyFit 35 was our top pick for the 2023 Best of Baby awards .

A coming-home outfit and hat

Pro tip: bring clothes in different sizes to make sure they fit! Our Pick: You might want to consider a (totally optional) matching hat and swaddle set for baby’s first photo!

Warm blankets (for the ride home)

A monogrammed one definitely isn’t essential, but it’ll make the moment feel extra-special.

My biggest tip would be to pack baby onesies in multiple sizes! You never know how big or small baby will actually be until they’re born. I only packed standard newborn outfits, and my baby was absolutely swimming in them! We didn’t even have smaller onesies at home because I didn’t think I needed them, so my husband had to race out to the shopping center late at night.

Hospital Bag Checklist for Partner

You’ve meticulously gone through the hospital bag checklist for yourself and baby—but don’t forget to make sure your partner packs a bag for themselves too! Since you’ll both likely be spending a night or two (or more) in the maternity ward, ensure your partner gathers up some overnight essentials, plus a few things to keep them occupied (labor can last for a good long while). Here’s what should go in their hospital bag:

A change of clothes

Including a toothbrush, deodorant, face wash, shampoo, conditioner, contact lens case and solution.

There need to be enough to go around—you don’t want your partner eating all of yours!

Entertainment

Whether it’s something to read, listen to or watch, they’ll want a way to pass the time.

Also pack batteries, charger and an extra memory card (if you prefer something more professional than your phone).

Any daily prescription medication

You’ll want to have these on hand for both parents!

I brought the comfiest clothes I could find, both sweatpants and basketball shorts, as well as multiple actual, physical books that I had been meaning to read (and I actually ended up reading some!)—I didn't want to be using a lot of screens while trying to make things calm for us and baby.

Nick C., dad of one

When you’ve gone through the hospital bag checklist and are satisfied you and your partner have packed what everyone will need, stash your hospital bag in your car or by the front door if you plan on taking a taxi to the hospital—and get ready for baby’s arrival!

How to Choose the Best Hospital Bags

The right bag for the hospital depends on how you are going to use it. While it can be a matter of subjective reasoning, there are some features that everyone can agree on. Before choosing your hospital bags, consider these 3 features.

The best hospital bags for mom are equipped with spacious compartments. Even though you already expect how long you will stay, unexpected changes may still occur. This is when a hospital bag with large compartments comes in handy. Even better if it’s built with multiple pockets, as it can be easier for you to pack and organize things in a breeze.

In a time of rush and panic, unnecessary extra weight from the bag can be your last straw. Look for lightweight bags for better options. Whether you’re picking a duffle bag or backpack, a lightweight bag improves overall easiness and comfort as you carry it. Plus, it makes a great day-to-day item too!

Your bag’s durability highly depends on its material. Most of the best bags for hospital are made of nylon or high-quality canvas. Aside from their inexpensive price tag, these two materials are the most used for bags in general. It lasts for many years, and you can use it for other things, such as traveling and camping.

Duffle bags are the most convenient when it comes to a hospital bag. It has enough space to hold your necessities for the next couple of days. And generally easier to maneuver than a suitcase, for instance. That said, a suitcase can be your other alternative when choosing the best hospital bags for mom. Since you can’t always be sure how long you’re going to spend time in the hospital.

Since the due date is only an estimated time, you should pack your bag before. There is no ideal time for that, but your partner may go into labor sooner than expected. We suggest you prepare your bag around 36 or 37 weeks pregnant.

Yes, you can. While duffle bags are preferable, a suitcase is not too much. Besides, it’s always better to be well-prepared for these types of situations.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

There are some travelers who are completely at ease with bringing just two or three outfits on a trip to skip checking a bag . I am not one of them. I like to pack as many options as my carry-on luggage will allow. While this may initially seem to contradict my title as a professional packer — I’m the founder of the Just Packed travel site and corresponding newsletter — the two aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. Instead, I define an expertly packed carry-on bag as one that contains everything that you may need on your trip (and still has the ability to close).

Before the actual packing process can begin, though, it’s critical to have luggage pieces that offer ample room to ensure its spot in the overhead bin or under the airplane seat in front of you. But, not every travel bag is up for the task. Over my years of research, both on the ground and in the air, these are the 11 roomiest carry-on bags that I've found. They include classic suitcases as well as travel totes, backpacks, and duffels that help you pack a week's worth (and even more) of clothes so you'll have everything that you need for your next trip.

Away Bigger Carry-on

In my line of work, I’m constantly testing different suitcase brands and styles. My 22-inch Away Bigger Carry-on has yet to be topped when it comes to how much it can hold. From the outside, it looks like a basic, albeit sleek , suitcase; there are no bells and whistles. That simplicity, however, is the key to its success. Every inch of the suitcase serves to get the job done (a.k.a. hold as much as possible). By using the interior compression system, I can fit about one week’s worth of clothes without trying too hard — but if I use a few of my tried-and-true packing hacks , I can make it work for a two-week trip.

It's also made with a polycarbonate hardshell, a sturdy material that I always look for when suitcase shopping because of its durability. Trust me, you'll appreciate it when your carry-on gets tossed around during takeoff and landing.

July Carry-on Pro

I might be loyal to my Away suitcase, but the 21-inch July Carry-on Pro recently caught my eye. It has a similar design, but it comes with a few more functional features. The front pocket can fit a 15-inch laptop and an iPad (although I tend to use compartments like this to hold a few items of clothing), and the Y-strap compression system helps keep the contents of the suitcase neatly packed down. I haven’t gotten a test to take mine out for a spin yet, but the luggage brand notes that it can hold six to eight outfits, or between five to seven days’ worth of clothing.

Amazon Basics 20-inch Hardside Spinner

If you’re looking for a more affordable carry-on suitcase, the highly-rated Amazon Basics 20-inch Hardside Spinner might do the trick. Coming in at under $65 thanks to a limited-time deal, this best-selling carry-on is the perfect choice for anyone who wants a capacious bag but doesn’t travel enough to warrant one with a higher price tag. Several reviewers noted that it’s great for week-long trips with its expansion feature that adds 15 percent more packing space, the interior organizer, and the three smaller zippered pockets.

MZ Wallace Deluxe Large Metro Tote

Overpackers who are actively trying to avoid bringing checked bags on their travels need the MZ Wallace Deluxe Large Metro Tote in their luggage repertoire. Not only is it, hands down, the most spacious tote that I’ve ever used, but it’s also pliable and filled with different pockets and compartments to keep everything organized in a designated spot. I think of it like a Mary Poppins-style bag. On a recent weekend trip, it served as my only piece of luggage, and I had no issue zipping it up while it held my pajamas, two outfits, a pair of sneakers, my laptop, a small toiletry bag, and a collection of other miscellaneous items (chargers, snacks, a hairbrush, etc). But when you're flying, use this as your personal bag along with your carry-on suitcase so you can get away with bringing more clothes on board.

When buying a new travel tote to use as a carry-on, I always recommend paying close attention to how the bag is designed (and how it will keep your belongings secure). Does it zip, tie, or latch everything inside? The exact closure method, and how it’s implemented, can significantly affect how much can be carried inside. This one has a zip-top design, so I know that it will keep everything safe from spilling out if I put it in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of me.

L.L. Bean Medium Boat and Tote Zip-Top

The classic L.L. Bean Boat and Tote comes in a variety of sizes and colors, and there’s even the option to choose one with or without a zip-top closure. The extra-large tote is technically the largest, but I personally use the medium-sized zip-top version. Inside, I’ll fit my toiletry bag (which tends to take up too much space in my suitcase), laptop, chargers, a water bottle, and a smaller crossbody bag. I’ve also never had any issues fitting it under the seat in front of me on a plane, and it’s sturdy enough to stay upright during take-off or turbulence.

Oeihuivt Weekender Bag

The Oeihuivt Weekender Bag is the more affordable twin of the steeper-priced duffel bag that I usually use. According to the brand, the bag can hold between two and four days' worth of essentials inside its six pockets, main compartment, and roomy shoe pouch. If I’m traveling with just a pair of shoes on my feet, I’ll often use the shoe pouch as a hack to store more clothes; it makes the perfect spot for my socks, Dopp kit, a sweatshirt, and a pair of jeans.

Paravel Foldable Travel Duffel Bag

I always think of my Foldable Travel Duffel Bag from Oprah-loved brand Paravel as my “in case of packing emergencies” bag. On a trip to Jackson Hole last year, I knew that there was a possibility that I’d be leaving with a few more items than I’d arrived with — so I tucked this duffel into my suitcase to use on the journey home. It’s one of those bags that’s deceptively roomy, and it held the hiking boots, sneakers, puffer vest, and several sweaters that had been displaced from my suitcase by my new Wyoming purchases. In addition to being an M.V.P. for bringing back souvenirs, it can also be used as a tote when you're at your destination, and even a beach bag if needed.

Bjlfs Weekender Carry-on

Some trips require a do-it-all kind of bag, one that can handle whatever you need it to hold. Enter the Bjlfs Weekender Carry-on. Its exact dimensions have it measuring in at around 10.7 inches by 22 inches by 7 inches, which means that it has more than enough room for a three-day weekend trip's wardrobe — and you’ll have no trouble fitting it in most overhead bins or under the seat in front of you should you use it as a personal bag. Interested in seeing how it would perform on a longer trip? According to one reviewer , they paired it with a small carry-on suitcase for an 11-day trip, and it was perfect.

Cuyana Classic Easy Zipper Tote

My vast collection of travel bags waxes and wanes on a regular basis, but there are a few extra-roomy styles that maintain their starting positions on my roster. One of those is my Cuyana Classic Easy Zipper Tote. The leather bag is a staple for work travel, and it holds more than you’d think upon initial glance. If you pair it with a carry-on for your next flight, you'll definitely be able to fit everything that you need for your trip.

A foolproof way to wisely choose a spacious carry-on bag is to identify its purpose. As one of my allowed carry-on bags, this roomy tote is always reserved for my laptop, which means that it has to be strong and wide enough to hold my heavy, 16-inch MacBook Pro and my other essentials. I’ve gone on several trips where it’s managed to perfectly carry my laptop, a couple of books, an extra layer, a water bottle, and even a Dopp kit or crossbody bag.

Roam Continental Backpack

When I say that the Roam Continental Backpack holds just as much as a duffel bag, I mean it. It first accompanied me on a trip to Venice, and I was immediately blown away by the capacity of each compartment. There’s an exterior laptop compartment, which holds all of my chargers, a front pocket (and is great for snacks and smaller toiletries), and a large main compartment. The latter fit a pair of shoes, the rest of my toiletries, a light jacket, and a small purse. There are also two water bottle holders on the backpack’s sides; I used one for my Yeti and the other for a couple pairs of socks.

Lo & Sons Large Rowledge Backpack

Lo & Sons

I’ve found that the Lo & Sons Large Rowledge Backpack is slightly less bulky than the above Roam style, but somehow, it’s almost just as spacious. If I’m using it as a secondary carry-on bag, the backpack always has extra room; if I’m bringing it on a short weekend trip, I typically don’t need to bring another bag. By using the rolling folding method, I can fit three to four outfits in the larger compartment, and the front compartment is perfect for a travel-sized toiletry bag and other essential accessories.

Bagsmart Hanging Toiletry Bag

This isn't a piece of luggage, but it's an essential item for making everything fit in a carry-on. There are a few things that I’ll sacrifice when packing — like extra pairs of shoes or an additional coat — but my beauty routine is not one of them. I’m a stickler for using my specific skin and hair care products, even while traveling, so I require a toiletry bag that can hold everything. The large Bagsmart Hanging Toiletry Bag can carry all of my skincare, shampoo and conditioner, makeup, and other hygiene products. If it’s packed in my carry-on, I just have to make sure to use my TSA-sized products or transfer my liquids to my trusty Cadence capsules .

Choosing the right travel medical insurance

How to use travel medical insurance, is travel medical insurance right for your next trip, travel medical insurance: essential coverage for health and safety abroad.

  • Travel medical insurance covers unexpected emergency medical expenses while traveling.
  • Travelers off to foreign countries or remote areas should strongly consider travel medical insurance.
  • If you have to use your travel medical insurance, keep all documents related to your treatment.

Of all the delights associated with travel to far-flung locales, getting sick or injured while away from home is low on the savvy traveler's list. Beyond gut-wrenching anxiety, seeking medical treatment in a foreign country can be exceedingly inconvenient and expensive.

The peace of mind that comes with travel insurance for the many things that could ail you while abroad is priceless. As options for travel-related insurance abound, it's essential to research, read the fine print, and act according to the specifics of your itinerary, pocketbook, and other needs.

Travel insurance reimburses you for any unexpected medical expenses incurred while traveling. On domestic trips, travel medical insurance usually take a backseat to your health insurance. However, when traveling to a foreign country, where your primary health insurance can't cover you, travel medical insurance takes the wheel. This can be especially helpful in countries with high medical care costs, such as Scandinavian countries.

Emergency medical evacuation insurance

Another benefit that often comes with travel medical insurance, emergency medical evacuation insurance covers you for any costs to transport you to an adequately equipped medical center. Emergency medical evacuation insurance is often paired with repatriation insurance, which covers costs associated with returning your remains to your home country if the worst happens.

These benefits are for worst-case scenarios, but they might be more necessary depending on the type of trips you take. Emergency medical evacuation insurance is helpful if you're planning on traveling to a remote location or if you're traveling on a cruise as sea to land evacuations can be costly. Some of the best travel insurance companies also offer non-medical evacuations as part of an adventure sports insurance package.

It's also worth mentioning that emergency medical evacuation insurance is required for international students studying in the US on a J Visa.

Types of coverage offered by travel medical insurance

The exact terms of your coverage will vary depending on your insurer, but you can expect most travel medical insurance policies to offer the following coverages.

  • Hospital room and board
  • Inpatient/outpatient hospital services
  • Prescription Drugs
  • COVID-19 treatment
  • Emergency room services
  • Urgent care visits
  • Local ambulance
  • Acute onset of pre-existing conditions
  • Dental coverage (accident/sudden relief of pain)
  • Medical care due to terrorist attack
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Repatriation of mortal remains
  • Accidental death and dismemberment

Travel medical insurance and pre-existing conditions

Many travel insurance providers will cover pre-existing conditions as long as certain conditions are met. For one, travelers need to purchase their travel insurance within a certain time frame from when they placed a deposit on their trip, usually two to three weeks.

Additionally, travel insurance companies usually only cover stable medical conditions, which are conditions that don't need additional medical treatment, diagnosis, or medications.

Who needs travel medical insurance?

Even the best-laid travel plans can go awry. As such, it pays to consider your potential healthcare needs before taking off, even if you are generally healthy. Even if well-managed, preexisting conditions like diabetes or asthma can make a medical backup plan even more vital.

Having what you need to refill prescriptions or get other care if you get stuck somewhere other than home could be essential to your health and well-being. That's without counting all the accidents and illnesses that can hit us when away from home.

Individuals traveling for extended periods (more than six months) or engaging in high-risk activities (think scuba diving or parasailing) should also consider a solid medical travel plan. Both scenarios increase the likelihood that medical attention, whether routine or emergency, could be needed.

In the case of travel via the friendly seas, it's also worth considering cruise trip medical travel insurance . Routine care will be available onboard. But anything beyond that will require transportation to the nearest land mass (and could quickly become extremely expensive, especially if you're in another country).

Like other types of insurance, medical travel insurance rates are calculated based on various factors. Failing to disclose a preexisting health condition could result in a lapse of coverage right when you need it, as insurers can cancel your policy if you withhold material information. So honesty is always the best policy.

Even the best-laid travel plans can go awry. As such, it pays to consider your potential healthcare needs before taking off, even if you are generally healthy. Making the right choice when shopping for travel medical insurance can mean the difference between a minor hiccup in your travels and a financial nightmare.

When a travel insurance company comes up with a quote for your policy, they take a few factors into consideration, such as your age, your destination, and the duration of your trip. You should do the same when assessing a travel insurance company.

For example, older travelers who are more susceptible to injury may benefit from travel medical insurance (though your premiums will be higher). If you're traveling for extended periods throughout one calendar year, you should look into an annual travel medical insurance plan . If you're engaging in high-risk activities (think scuba diving or parasailing), you should seek a plan that includes coverage for injuries sustained in adventure sports.

Travel medical insurance isn't just for peace of mind. If you travel often enough, there's a good chance you'll eventually experience an incident where medical treatment is necessary.

Before you submit your claim, you should take some time to understand your policy. Your travel medical insurance is either primary (you can submit claims directly to your travel medical insurance provider) or secondary (you must first submit claims to your primary insurance provider). In the case of secondary travel medical insurance, a refusal notice from your primary insurance provider, even if it does not cover medical claims outside the US, is often required as evidence of protocol.

On that note, you should be sure to document every step of your medical treatment. You should keep any receipts for filled prescriptions, hospital bills, and anything else documenting your medical emergency.

As many people have found out the hard way, reading the fine print is vital. Most travel insurance policies will reimburse your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if you fall ill with a severe condition, including illnesses like COVID-19.

Still on the fence about whether or not medical travel insurance is worth it ? It's worth noting that many travel insurance plans also include medical protections, so you can also protect against trip cancellations and other unexpected developments while obtaining travel medical insurance.

While short, domestic trips may not warrant travel medical insurance, it may be a good idea to insure longer, international trips. You should also consider travel medical insurance for trips to remote areas, where a medical evacuation may be expensive, and more physically tasking trips.

While shopping for travel medical insurance may not be fun, a little advance leg work can let you relax on your trip and give you peace of mind. After all, that is the point of a vacation.

Medical travel insurance frequently asked questions

Trip insurance covers any unexpected financial losses while traveling, such as the cost of replacing lost luggage, trip interruptions, and unexpected medical expenses. Travel medical insurance just covers those medical expenses without the trip interruption or cancellation insurance.

Travel insurance companies usually offer adventure sports as add-on coverage or a separate plan entirely. You'll likely pay more for a policy with adventure sports coverage.

Many travel medical insurance policies now include coverage for COVID-19 related medical expenses and treat it like any other illness. However, you should double-check your policy to ensure that is the case.

Finding and catching endangered frogs in the cloudy mountains of Panama

A university team of women scientists traveled to el valle de antón for ongoing research on a pathogen killing different amphibian populations.

A giant hand holding a plastic bag appears in the sky. With the fist almost closed, it lunges at the ground, trying to catch something, and fails. Once again, the hand jumps from side to side, trying to catch the frog, which is faster. It fails. There is more leaping, more plastic, more speeding, and finally, inside the close fist, the frog is caught. The giant hand ties the bag and places it inside a backpack.

A researcher's hand in a plastic bag reaches for something on a moss covered bush.

El Valle de Antón, in Panama, is not only a picturesque town located in the crater of an extinct volcano in the Panamanian highlands, but is it also, from my journalistic perspective, a perfect place for biological research, with its cooler temperatures, its mountains, waterfalls, its biodiversity, and the cloud forests. Researchers from the University of Nevada, Reno, seem to think so, too, as a team of women scientists consisting of two postdocs, one college student, two high school students, and two journalists embarked last August on a trip from Reno to El Valle , a 2-hours’ drive from Panama City. The reason for the trip is one of horror and hope: there is a highly lethal disease called chytridiomycosis that has been devastating for Panamanian amphibian populations, including the iconic Panamanian golden frogs ( Atelopus varius/zeteki ), their beloved national animal. This and other species were rumored to be extinct. However, the University and other research teams found evidence that several amphibian species are persisting, and even recovering, long after the lethal disease outbreaks in the 1990s.

Now the University team, led by associate professor Jamie Voyles in the Department of Biology, travels twice a year, during wet and dry transition periods, to Panama to collect samples from the frog skin secretions as the Chytridiomycosis is a fungal disease that affects their skin and all its functions. Then, in the laboratory, they conduct experiments to test for changes in the pathogen – called Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis or Bd – in the frogs. They found that the frogs now have better defenses against the pathogen than before. They are fighting back!

Walking in the wet boots of a scientist

The day starts early, at 7 in the morning. It takes a ride up the mountains, on steep slopes, in a 4x4 truck with geckos stuck to the windshield to arrive at each site, some of which are fairly remote. Dressed with rain boots and rain jackets, the scientists carried all their research equipment in waterproof backpacks.

But getting to the site of each transect was the easy part. It then took a memorized hike in the forest dodging barbed wire and fallen trees and walking in zig zags from one side of the river to the other, sometimes losing sight of the other crew members due to the fog, to finally arrive at the transects. I stopped several times to empty the water that kept filling my borrowed rain boots.

A long pole with a hook on the end holds up a piece of barbed wire with somebody leaning over in the background. The barbed wire has ants with leaves in their mouths crawling on it.

At each site, the researchers take a moment to collect biological data, such as water and air temperature, humidity, and water pH, before they try catching the frogs, explained Carolina Lambertini, postdoctoral associate at the biology department at the University. Then, the search begins. They have three focal frog species: the Panamanian common rocket frog ( Colostethus panamansis ), Warszewitsch’s frog ( Lithobates warszewitschii ) and the Panamanian golden frog ( Atelopus varius/zeteki ). But they also catch and sample other species if they find them, to detect the pathogen.

Walking up the stream, they were able to find and catch the two first species and a salamander, but we could not find any golden frog. Researchers haven’t found any golden frogs in these transects since 2012-2013. Some frogs were harder to catch than others. The rocket frog is faster and harder to catch and ended up leaping from the hands to the t-shirts of the researchers.

Before catching the frog, and when possible, they take the frog’s body temperature and the surface temperature.

“We then try to catch them using plastic bags, to avoid contamination, and once in the bag we get their body temperature, the time of the catch, and at what part of the transect they were collected; we also write if they were in a rock, moss, or so on,” explained Maria Delia Basanta, the other postdoctoral associate who traveled with us.

At the end of each transect, the researchers sit in a circle on the river bank and start the sampling process in the field. While inside the bag, frogs are weighed and measured with the Snout-Ventral Length, or SVL, which is the measurement taken from the tip of the frog's snout to the cloaca–the opening for the digestive and reproductive tracts.

A woman sitting on a riverbank is wearing plastic gloves and holding a plastic bag in her hand.

“With gloves, we take the frog from the bag, and with a swab, we follow a sterilized protocol that consists of swabbing the legs five times, the feet five times, hands five times, and 10 on the belly,” added Basanta. During the swabbing process, some of the frogs stay quiet, some play dead, and others like to stretch, showing off their long legs. They take notes of all the characteristics and, once all the frogs have been sampled, they are released back into the transect while the team walks back down the stream.

“The idea with the swabbing is to detect this pathogen. Then, at the lab, we study how the frogs are affected, and try to understand how the amphibian communities are prevailing,” Basanta continued.

After releasing the frogs, the crew finds a different location to have lunch, chat about what they found, and prepare for the rest of the day, which sometimes consisted of doing some sample processing at home, and some other times included projects with the community. Postdoctoral associate Basanta dressed several times as a bright yellow golden frog to teach kids and teenagers at the local schools about the importance of these amphibians and the protection of the ecosystems.

Three people stand in front of a classroom, including one dressed up as a yellow frog with black spots. One person is speaking in front of a projector screen.

Ongoing research

Some of the lab work is done at The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute's Center for Species Survival and El Valle Amphibian Conservation Center in Panama. It is also done by students and researchers at the University.

Lambertini is researching what is the role of their skin secretion as an immune response against the infection, and Basanta is trying to see if genetic changes are happening in the amphibians in comparison with the samples taken before the pathogen arrived.

Voyles, who didn’t travel this time to El Valle, explained that what they have found is that frogs now seem to have better defenses against the same pathogen.

“We have learned that it's not the pathogen that has changed in this system, but rather that the amphibian seemed to be fighting back with their defenses, their immune systems,” she explained.

They are trying to understand how this process is happening for different species because they all have slightly different immune responses to the infection.

“Some species are doing well. The species called Lithobates warszewitschii is recovering much better than many of the other species in the area, particularly compared to the golden frog, which is still present but it's very hard to find. So we want to understand the difference between these two species. Why has one recovered so well and the other one is still struggling to recover from this disease outbreak?”

Dense foliage covers a hillside. An orange ribbon is tied around a rock.

The grant that Voyles's team currently has will keep going for two more years, but they are hoping to find more opportunities to keep doing research.

“It is really important to understand why these species have gone missing, and how we can facilitate their recoveries. From another perspective, as we know from the recent COVID pandemic, there's a lot that scientists don't understand about infectious diseases, so this research is also useful,” Voyles added.

Back to El Valle de Antón, with the India Dormida mountain, a profile that resembles a sleeping indigenous woman, as the background, groups of people celebrated last August 14, the Golden Frog Day with a week of activities that included collecting trash from the streets, science fairs with students, and a lot of dancing.

You can watch a YouTube video of the reserach: Golden Mission: Conserving Panama’s Last Golden Frogs.
