Hyundai Reveals More Specs on the Spacey New Staria Van

After learning more about the not-for-U.S. minivan, we want it even more.

• The Staria will be available in standard and Premium versions. Engine choices are either a diesel four-cylinder with a manual transmission or automatic or a 3.5-liter V-6 with an automatic.
• The Hyundai Staria will go on sale, sadly outside the U.S. only, starting in the second half of this year.

Hyundai has released more information about its new Staria van, which won't be sold in the U.S., through a digital premiere yesterday, and now we wish we could get the van with space vibes here even more. It'll go on sale in other markets later this year as Staria and Staria Premium models.

Starias are available with seating for two, seven, nine, or 11. The Premium models get brass chrome trim, smart power sliding doors, relaxation seats on the seven-seat model, interior ambient lighting, and a Bose sound system. There's also a Staria Premium limousine that has a high roof with starlights (think Rolls-Royce), a 25-inch overhead monitor, and a movable folding island.

The Staria is about the same size as the new Kia Carnival , which just went on sale in the U.S., but 9.8 inches taller. Cargo volume varies depending on the seating configuration, but the two- and three-seater models, which should be used more as cargo vans, boast 176.6 cubic feet of storage, 31.5 cubes more than the Carnival's max cargo capacity.

Starias will have the choice of two engines, although Hyundai says "eco-friendly" models are coming soon. The 175-hp 2.2-liter diesel four-cylinder can be had with a six-speed manual (#SavetheManuals) or an eight-speed automatic transmission. A 3.5-liter V-6 with 268 horsepower is also available solely with the automatic.

The Hyundai Staria will go on sale outside the U.S. later this year in eight exterior color choices including Dynamic Yellow and Gaia Brown Pearl. Additional variants such as ambulances, camping vans, and limousines will be available in the future.

This is an impressive campervan that could double as your daily driver. There’s also the backing of a five-year warranty for the base vehicle and the conversion.

If you wanted a campervan that’s built to car-quality levels, then Volkswagen’s California has been your only choice for quite a while.

However, there may now be another option that not only matches the VW in quality, but seriously undercuts any VW-based camper on price. It also offers a superior warranty and tops it all off with a specification that’s little short of excellent.

We’ve been following Wellhouse Leisure’s work with Hyundai for a long time and it’s been worth the wait. This conversion is now in full production with plans to extend retail distribution from Wellhouse’s own base in Yorkshire to all corners of the country via Hyundai car dealerships, many of whom have said that there has been plenty of interest from potential customers. There’s also been a close collaboration with leading campervan kit supplier Reimo in Germany. First impressions indicate that this is a very promising newcomer.

It comes with a 2.5-litre engine and five-speed manual gearbox. Economy figures don’t look particularly special, but we’re quoting Hyundai’s official figures, which may well improve in practice. The colour-coded roof is a £350 extra. There are five paintwork choices – including Grey Titanium and Blue Diamond metallics as well as the Hyper Silver shown here. Items such as front fog lights and alloy wheels are standard.

Inside, you get a VW-style layout. It seats five thanks to a rear folding bench unit from Reimo that has three seatbelts and adjustable head restraints. A decent, flat, roof bed and a fifth sleeping berth across the cab are an optional extra.

The kitchen gets Dometic’s latest combined two-ring hob and sink, a SMEV oven/grill and a 47-litre Vitrifrigo compressor fridge. The hot water and heating is courtesy of Webasto’s sophisticated diesel-fuelled heating system.

Storage is better than you might expect in a vehicle of this size, thanks mainly to the easy access to the underseat area and the provision of a locker large enough to stow a Dometic portable toilet. Details such as the stretch material for the curtains really do help to put Wellhouse ahead of the game.

The typical commercial van isn’t exactly the most desirable thing on the street, yet they’re a vital asset for those needing to haul in safe and secure comfort.

Hyundai’s entrant in this segment is known as the H1 as well as Starex Grand Starex, i800, iLoad and  iMax among many other names depending on the market and whether it’s the commercial or people mover variant. It’s not as popular as some well-known nameplates; however, a radical new redesign aims to change this.

Recently-spied prototypes cloaked in minimal camouflage indicate an imminent reveal, so let’s get in first and take a sneak peek before the covers are officially lifted.

A Bold Outlook

At first glance, there’s certainly no escaping the boldness of this redesign. Attention-grabbing frontal styling consists of a large rectangular grille and split-headlamps that feature thin horizontal LED DRL’s under the hood’s leading edge.

Going against the usual trend of having a small glasshouse-to-body ratio, the H1 flips the script by adopting a fish tank appearance with unusually tall side and rear windows. Minimalist sheet metal surfacing is refreshingly devoid of fussy styling flourishes, and the rear has a squared-off look with vertical LED taillights and a large spoiler.

A Nicer Place To Travel

Like the exterior, the cabin also takes a radical new direction; here, the dashboard cascades downwards around the center stack, exuding a more car-like appearance. The steering wheel is shared with other models in the Hyundai lineup, and the freestanding gauge cluster is similar to the one found in Ford’s Mustang Mach-E .

The H1 will again offer dedicated cargo and passenger carrying options, with the latter capable of seating up to 11 people. A significant increase in safety technology will likely feature autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, blind-spot monitoring and rear-collision braking.

Under The Skin

Depending on the market, the H1 will be powered by a mix of petrol and diesel engines. The oil burner is a 2.2-litre turbo-four pumping out 198 hp (148kW) and 325 ft-lb (440 Nm) via a new eight-speed automatic transmission. In regions where diesel is unpopular, Hyundai Motor Group’s new 2.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder could do the trick; it produces 286 hp (213 kW) and 311 ft-lb (422 Nm). There’s also been talk about a hybrid as well as a full-electric variant to go with the times, but that’s something we’ve yet to confirm.

The H1 competes with load haulers that include Volkswagen’s Transporter , Ford Transit Custom , Toyota Hiace/Granvia , Mercedes-Benz Vito and Renault’s Trafic .

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
