The Chicks march into new tour with trademark fearlessness: 'We still love it'

natalie maines tour

Natalie Maines has been working out daily, finally feeling comfortable enough in a COVID-19 environment to go hiking near her Los Angeles home.

Her partners in The Chicks , sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer, “always stay in touring shape," she jokes with an affectionate eye roll.

Even so, it’s understandable that the trio needed some time to transform into road warriors again.

More than two decades since they began performing as a group, with 13 Grammy Awards, five headlining tours and sales of 33 million albums, it’s…been a minute for The Chicks.

Their eighth studio album, “Gaslighter,” a trove of achingly personal – and sometimes deliciously barbed – lyrics coupled with their rich balance of visceral pop coated with a country twang, arrived in July 2020. A month earlier, the band announced it would drop a familiar part of its name – Dixie – because of its affiliation with the Civil War-era South. (“We want to meet this moment,” they said at the time, during the George Floyd-inspired summer of protests for justice.)

Maren Morris stays humble and defiant as she embarks on 2022 tour

Nearly two years later, The Chicks, chatting via video from Los Angeles and Texas, are resolute in their decision.

“I don’t pay attention much to social media. Were people mad?” Maines says with a sly smile.

“I wasn’t really taking people’s opinion on it,” Strayer adds. “It’s your persona, your name, your identity.”

“We always referred to ourselves as The Chicks,” Maines says. “We were already getting away from the Dixie, using DCX on merchandise, because we weren’t feeling that word. When we discussed what to name this tour, we realized we’d never toured as The Chicks.”

That road run, simply dubbed The Chicks Tour, kicks off Tuesday in St. Louis and will keep the band roaming the country through Aug. 13. It's their first tour since DCX MMXVI wrapped in 2017, and their first live performances since a visit to pal Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show days before the pandemic lockdown in 2020.

All three Chicks are eager to feel the live-music adrenaline jolt, and especially the opportunity to finally play songs from their latest release – including the striking protest anthem “March March” and swooping title track.

And considering their catalog of hits accumulated after nearly 25 years, fan favorites such as  “Not Ready to Make Nice” “The Long Way Around,” “Long Time Gone” and “Ready to Run” will likely squeeze onto the set list.

“I enjoy (our live shows) like a concert even though I’m in the concert,” Maguire says with a laugh. “We love touring. It gets grueling toward the end and a bit of a grind, but we still love it.”

Maines’ son, Slade, 21, is an official member of the live band and will play guitars, synthesizers and piano. It’s a generational guard-changing of sorts, considering Maines’ father, revered country guitarist Lloyd, frequently joined the trio onstage.

“When my dad would play with us, people would tell off-color jokes and I’d be like, ‘STOP, that’s my dad!’ Now I feel that way about my son,” she says.

Our favorite songs of summer: Lizzo, Harry Styles, Måneskin make the cut

Joining The Chicks on varying dates are Patty Griffin – who opened for the band on its first headlining tour in 2000 – and Jenny Lewis, whom Strayer discovered when Lewis opened for  Harry Styles  on his 2021 Love on Tour.

It’s been nearly 20 years since The Chicks inflamed the cultural landscape with their comments about then-President George W. Bush (“We’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas,” Maines said onstage of their shared home state), but it feels like a lifetime ago.

The band weathered the fallout – famously sweeping the 2007 Grammy Awards with their “Taking the Long Way” album and pointed hit, “Not Ready to Make Nice” – and recalled that fearlessness when making “Gaslighter.”

“You’re baring your soul and your mistakes and your wars, but this is the first time I’ve felt the least inhibited about throwing stuff out there,” says Strayer, crediting co-producer Jack Antonoff for inspiring that creative freedom.

'What if we zigzag?': The restless creativity of Jack Antonoff

“This album made me feel more confident as a writer,” Maines says. “Having (co-producer) Teddy Geiger playing a synth, it unlocked so many melodic ideas for me.”

While The Chicks swear it won’t be another 14-year gap until their next album – 2006’s “Taking the Long Way” preceded “Gaslighter,” their final release under their seven-album contract with Sony Music – they are enthusiastic about the future as free agents.

“We like having a label, but it’s been over 20 years with an archaic contract,” Maines says. “It will be nice to redo that.”

If things had gone according to plan, The Chicks would have hit the road during the summer of 2020 to support Gaslighter , the trio’s first album since 2006’s Grammy-winning Taking the Long Way.

We all know how that went, though.

But two years later lead singer Natalie Maines and multi-instrumentalist sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer are ready to make up for lost time. The Chicks Tour is ready to start June 14 in St. Louis, with 31 dates on tap before wrapping up Aug. 13 at The Gorge in George, Wash. It will mark the trio’s first time back on the road since 2017, and the first time touring as The Chicks after jettisoning the “Dixie” from their name in 2020.

“The band, they’re on Zooms together all the time listening to [ Gaslighter ] and figuring out, ‘What’s that?'” Maines says by Zoom from her home in Los Angeles, while Maguire and Strayer listen from Austin and San Antonio, Texas, respectively. Jack Antonoff, Gaslighter ‘s primary producer, was slated to sit in on one of the band calls, too, to help identify specific parts and sounds from the album’s 12 songs.

“It’s interesting,” says Maines, who hasn’t seen Strayer in person since the spring of 2020 (she and Maguire took their children to Disneyland last July). “It’ll be fun. I am a little stressed. My son, who is in the band this year [playing guitar and keyboards], is constantly stressed and practices all the time. I’m like, ‘Slade, really, I promise you, it’ s not gonna be as hard as you think. You already know the stuff better than us. Relax!'”

Strayer adds that The Chicks “were pretty deep into the planning process” in 2020 before the trek was canceled due to the pandemic. That, in turn, sent the group back to the drawing board for this year’s outing. “We kinda scrapped everything,” she says, “so we started from scratch. It’s been like planning two tours in two years, which is a lot for us. But for me the touring is the fun part of this whole process and getting to do set design and work out all the visuals that go along with the music, that’s one of the biggest payoffs, I think, for being an artist. So it is fun.”

Maines predicts that the songs from Gaslighter — which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart in July 2020 — will be performed faithfully during the shows. “Usually, the first time out on new material we like to hear it like we painstakingly recorded it and see if we can do it,” she explains. “After that we can get creative with it.” That leaves material from the previous four albums (since Maines joined the band) potentially more pliable, but Maines promises The Chicks are well aware of how familiar their fans are with those songs — and that they haven’t heard them performed live for quite some time.

“I hate when people get too off,” Maines acknowledges. “It’s no fun if you go to a concert you love to sing along to, and they’ve changed it all up. We keep that in mind. We want our fans to be able to enjoy it and recognize it and sing along. So it’s not about changing melody or anything. We’ve done ‘Cowboy Take Me Away’ like the album version for, I hate to count the years… so maybe you’d just do it more broken down or something like that.”

What may be at work, however, is a different connection the group and particularly Maines may feel towards the Gaslighter songs. Many of the album’s more personal tracks were inspired by all three members’ divorces — and especially Maines’ acrimonious divorce from actor Adrian Pasdar, during which he sought access to unreleased songs that he alleged might violate confidentiality clauses in the couple’s prenuptial agreement. Two years on Maines says that, “I definitely still relate and am definitely still in touch with all that,” but from a different perspective. “It’s not a three-hanky album anymore,” she explains. “It definitely is in the past, and it definitely was a lot of therapy.”

All three of The Chicks, meanwhile, say they’ve had feedback from fans that Gaslighter has helped them through their own divorces and relationship issues. And Maines is quick to note that “all of the songs definitely didn’t feel like they were about me,” including issue-oriented songs such as the single “March March” that resonate as strongly now – especially in the wake of the renewed Black Lives Matter movement and restrictive abortion and voting laws in the group’s native Texas and elsewhere — as when they were originally written.

“In the releasing of the album I remember being really hopeful,” Maines says. “I kept thinking things are gonna be different, not because of our music, but things seemed so bad. I just remember feel like, ‘Oh, the video for ‘March March’ is so empowering. It’s not gonna be like this. And it’s really disappointing to see that it’s maybe worse now. I thought that would be better.”

The Chicks say they’ve received overwhelmingly positive reaction to the band’s name change that accompanied Gaslighter , something they say they’d been contemplating for awhile. “I remember in the moment we couldn’t do it fast enough,” Maguire says, “but there were so many things we had to do in order to have the new name. We wanted to do it today because everything was so intense in the moment. We like to be in front of things, not a step behind, especially something that matters like that. We were like, ‘OK, if NASCAR’s doing this, we’ve just got to get on board.” Maines says there are still occasions where “I’ll read something in email that refers to a band bank account that says Dixie Chicks or something, and I’m like, ‘We’re not the Dixie Chicks!’ It bothers me to see that word now.”

The Chicks Tour is, understandably, taking up the trio’s attention right now, but there are also thoughts about what might be next. With their children older — Strayer has the youngest, at nine years old — they say there’s more time to write and plan and devote to music. There’s even “an album in mind,” one that “not necessarily requires writing,” according to Maines. “It’s possibly an album that’s all songs of a songwriter we all love — I’ll say that.” Another 14-year interim is unlikely, then. “Nah,” Maines says, “it’ll probably be more like…eight,” as her bandmates laugh.

The Chicks Turn Nationwide Summer Tour Into A Family Affair

natalie maines tour

Kevin Winter

After nearly a five-year touring hiatus, The Chicks are back in action and are gearing up for their 31-date summertime trek. Lead singer Natalie Maines and sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer recently revealed how their 2022 tour will be different and why they are making a comeback with a socially conscious mindset.

During an exclusive interview with People , the country trio confirmed that their nationwide journey has already become a family affair. Maines' 21-year-old son Slade will tackle the drums and Maguire's daughter Eva will join as a string player.

Maines' told the publication that her son is taking the opportunity seriously and has been tirelessly practicing for the big break.

"He's very practiced, very well-rehearsed, better than any of the rest of us when we showed up," the singer-songwriter shared. "He's got his first real job. Thank God," she added with a laugh.

As the aspiring musician gears up to hit the road, Maguire pointed out that her niece will be joining the team as an intern to learn the ins and outs of the industry.

"We've got a niece that's going to be interning," she explained. "She's a music major at UCLA," she added while clarifying that the young adults will only be making an appearance on specific dates.

The female trio continued to mention why they decided to extend the invitation to their family, and how the upcoming performances would offer Maines a feeling of nostalgia. She pointed out that the "sentimental" sensation comes along with sharing a stage with a loved one. Since The Chicks debuted in 1997 – the vocalist performed with her critically acclaimed father Lloyd, who played the pedal steel.

"I used to get that feeling when I would look back and see my dad playing with us, especially when we were on stage with James Taylor," she said. "I could barely get through a song without crying, it was so sentimental."

To go along with the mother-son moment, the trio dished on their set list and what ticket-holders could expect. Since the platinum-selling band could not tour in 2020, they plan on sharing material from their relatively-new collection, " Gaslighter ."

The 12-song collection serves as the first tracklist since their 2006's Grammy-award-winning project, " Taking the Long Way ."

"We'll rotate different songs [from Gaslighter], but if you come to more than one show, you'll maybe get to see that whole album performed," Maines declared to the outlet . "That's for the fans, but it's also for us because we work so long and hard on the record, a lot of the payoff is getting to play them live."

The beloved group hopes to get the audience involved with an interactive dice game. The six-sided die will include names of old-school classics and some surprises.

"We're going to play a fun game where we have six songs that coordinate with dice, and we'll roll the dice on stage and play whatever song," Maines uttered. "One song that was our first No. 1 that we haven't played in over 20 years because I don't care for it is ' There's Your Trouble ,' and [it's] in the six songs, so we will be playing 'There's Your Trouble' for the first time in over 20 years," she added

The thought-out tour will be the first time they are hitting the road as "The Chicks." The group dropped "Dixie" from their name in 2020. The group has become outspoken figures within the genre since they publicly criticized President George W. Bush.

Since then, the world-renowned band has utilized its large platform to push for positive social change. For instance, they joined forces with Planned Parenthood and Proclaim Justice on their DCX MMXVI World tour. Now, the " Wide Open Spaces " singers are collaborating with REVERB to raise awareness for environmental problems and encourage sustainability.

"It's a natural extension of who we are and what we care about," Strayer told People . "and so it seems to make sense at our show with our fans that they would want to see that aspect of us."

The tour will kick off in St. Louis on June 14 and will wrap in August. The ladies will hit legendary venues across the nation, from the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, and Blossom Music Center in Cleveland, OH. Tickets are currently available for purchase here .

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Thirteen-time Grammy winners The Chicks are heading back on tour, their first major outing since 2017 and first shows since releasing their fifth studio album “Gaslighter.”

The multi-platinum female trio behind hits like “Wide Open Spaces” announced on Monday that The Chicks Tour will hit 27 North American cities starting in June and running through August.

“While we were recording the ‘Gaslighter’ album, I was constantly picturing performing all of those songs on tour,” said Martie Maguire, who together with her sister Emily Strayer and Natalie Maines make up The Chicks, in a statement to the AP. “The ultimate payoff is always the live show for us.”

The Chicks released “Gaslighter” in 2020, their first studio album in 14 years, but the pandemic derailed plans for a tour. This summer tour will start in St. Louis on June 14, with stops in Chicago, Toronto, Boston, Charlotte, two nights in Los Angeles and the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver.

“What I have missed the most about touring is the first couple minutes of every show,” said Strayer. “The house lights going dark, the roar of the crowd and the opening song pumping through the PA. I think we’ve all missed being connected through live music!”

Tour openers include Grammy winner singer-songwriter Patty Griffin and indie rocker Jenny Lewis.

“Most of our fans know that we are die hard Patty fans,” said Maines in a statement. “The three of us saw her at The Ryman back in 1998 and we haven’t left her alone since! She opened for us on our first headlining tour in 2000, and we have covered more of her songs than anybody else.”

Tickets go on sale on Friday.

The Chicks reschedule several shows due to 'illness'

The Chicks are postponing a handful of shows due to health issues.

The country trio — formerly known as The Dixie Chicks and composed of Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer — first announced that they would be rescheduling their July 27 show in Nashville, Tennessee, before postponing two additional dates.

“Due to illness, The Chicks must regretfully postpone tonight’s show at Bridgestone Arena. We are working on rescheduling and will provide a new show date as soon as possible,” the statement posted on their Instagram reads. They added that fans are encouraged to hold on to their tickets for the rescheduled date and apologized for “any inconveniences this may cause.”

On July 28, however, they shared an additional update, notifying fans that they are rescheduling three more shows in the coming days due to an undisclosed illness.

The "Cowboy Take Me Away" singers are rescheduling their July 29 show in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Sept. 21.

Their July 30 concert in Greensboro, North Carolina, will now take place on Aug. 8.

The July 27 Nashville performance they canceled the day of is now scheduled for Sept. 23.

TODAY.com has reached out to The Chicks for additional comment.

"We are so sorry for the inconvenience, but our priority is to put on a show you all deserve," the statement reads in part.

All original tickets will be honored for the rescheduled dates, with no additional charges.

The trio is currently on their The Chicks World Tour 2023, which kicked off on July 20 in Oslo, Norway. After making their way through parts of Europe and North America, The Chicks will head to the land down under with concerts in Australia and New Zealand in October.

The multi-Grammy award-winning artists have been sharing photos and updates from their time on the road on their Instagram, and were excited to start the U.S. leg of their tour just three days ago.

When the Chicks aren’t working, the three members keep a group text going to stay in touch about band matters and about one another’s families — and to trade jokes, “the more inappropriate the better,” says lead singer Natalie Maines.

If people could read what they write, the 48-year-old adds with a laugh, “we’d be canceled 10 times over already.”

This summer, the Grammy-winning pop-country trio — which also includes sisters Martie Maguire, 53, and Emily Strayer, 50 — are on the road, touring behind their most recent studio album, 2020’s Jack Antonoff-produced “ Gaslighter ,” which addressed Maines’ messy divorce from actor Adrian Pasdar in brutally specific songs set on her boat and at the Hollywood Bowl. (Though the Chicks formed in Dallas, these days Maines lives in Los Angeles, Maguire in Austin and Strayer in San Antonio.)

First on the itinerary: a six-night residency at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas set to kick off Wednesday. It’s a long way from the tiny bluegrass gigs the group — then known as the Dixie Chicks — started out playing before blowing up with 1998’s “Wide Open Spaces” and its 1999 follow-up, “Fly,” both of which have sold more than 10 million copies; it wasn’t long after that that the Chicks were famously booted from country radio after Maines told an audience in England that they were ashamed to share a home state with President George W. Bush.

Between rehearsals at Planet Hollywood, the women gathered on Zoom to discuss the new show, their history of cancellation and the state of the Chicks’ next LP.

Whose Vegas shows have you seen? Maines: I’ve seen Wayne Newton. I saw Siegfried & Roy. Tom Jones. I think Martie threw her bra at Tom Jones.

Maguire: That makes me sound really old.

You’re talking about the real Vegas OGs. Strayer: I think it’s different for artists now. It used to be you’d come here toward the end of your career and stay until you went away. I don’t know if I’d want to be here for months on end.

Maguire: Our mom’s coming for five days. I told her she couldn’t stay that long, and she was like, “I’ll just read my book for my book club.”

From Beck to Keith Richards to, of course, Willie, the performances at this weekend’s tribute concert ranged from heartbreaking to side-splitting to just plain brilliant.

“Gaslighter” came out at the beginning of the pandemic — not exactly an opportune time to draw a bunch of attention. Do you think it got its due? Maines: Our fans love it. They know every word to that album at the shows. We got used to not being played on the radio and stuff like that a long time ago.

Natalie, you really went into detail in the songs about the end of your marriage. What’s it been like to get some distance and look back at that? Maines: The thing that I always contemplate is that my kids have to live with this. I knew that when we wrote it and when we put it out. But as artists, that’s what we do. It’s part of the therapy and it’s part of the survival. Kids are doing good, but ask me in 20 years. I might regret it.

Maguire: You know Natalie’s son Slade is in the band? Sometimes I’ll look over at him like, What’s he thinking? He’s played this album so many times. What a trouper.

What do your other children think of the Chicks? Maines: My kids like our music. They’re not like, “Oh, Mom’s a dork.”

Strayer: My 18-year-old just informed me that it’s not cool to listen to the radio. I guess we were ahead of the curve not being on there.

Maguire: Austin radio is cool. But yeah — keep San Antonio lame.

How do the cities of Texas rank in terms of coolness? Maines: Austin’s the coolest for sure.

Strayer: San Antonio’s definitely the lamest, but that’s why I like it.

The Chicks (then the Dixie Chicks) with Dennis Franz at the 42nd Grammy Awards, Feb. 23, 2000.

For years you’ve sung Fleetwood Mac’s “ Landslide ,” which Stevie Nicks is on tour now performing as a tribute to the late Christine McVie. Are there Chicks songs whose meanings have changed for you over time? Maguire: “ Cowboy Take Me Away ” was written about Emily’s ex-husband, and I doubt any of us think about him during that song.

Strayer: “Gaslighter” we wrote more as a relationship song, but it definitely got very political very fast. It became the word of the year [in 2022].

Maines: I don’t feel the same way singing “ Not Ready to Make Nice ” as before. I used to feel that s—, and for probably a lot longer than I should have. Now it’s just a song.

Strayer: I almost feel like we’ve given that song to our fans. When they’re singing it, you know they’re singing about something they went through.

The Chicks' Natalie Maines performs onstage

You’re taking Maren Morris out as an opening act this year. Did the fallout from her feud with Jason Aldean remind you of the blowback to your criticism of President Bush during the Iraq War? Strayer: I’m not familiar with what happened between the two of them.

Maines: Didn’t his wife go on social media and start putting down trans people?

She criticized the parents of kids seeking gender-affirming care. Maines: Just disgusting stuff. I love how outspoken Maren was on that. It’s just another example of what’s going on in this country on every level. Florida, Tennessee, Texas — it’s just ridiculous. Whether it’s abortion or gay rights — everybody has to have something to hate, somebody to put down.

Do you feel like the Bush incident, which took place 20 years ago, is still a defining episode in the Chicks’ story? Maines: It’s defining in the way it set us free. It got us out of this box of country music, which we never wanted to be in and never felt like that’s who we were. We didn’t have to do any of that bulls— anymore. It wasn’t like, “Oh, country music, please take us back.” It was middle fingers: “Bye!”

Smokey Robinson

The title of Robinson’s new album, ‘Gasms,’ created a stir online and even with his family. Says Smokey: ‘A gasm is any good feeling you might have.’

Anything to report on new music? Maines: We usually do one thing at a time, and right now it’s touring. We have an album we know we want to make after the tour that hopefully we’ll jump into with Jack. It’s more of a conceptual album. We don’t have a label right now, so we’re trying to figure out what we’re gonna do.

Have you been playing new songs in rehearsals? Maines: Not originals. Covers.

Strayer: We always play some Patty Griffin. We did a James Taylor song the other day that we ended up throwing in the show.

Maines: And we’re doing a Miley/Dolly song.

Long shows seem to be in right now. Taylor Swift’s doing nearly 3½ hours, same for Bruce Springsteen. But in Vegas — Maguire: We’re not allowed to play over two hours.

Gotta get people back into the casino. Maines: I can only think of one person I would want to watch for 3½ hours.

Who’s that? Maines: Beyoncé.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It’s business as usual on the Chicks summer concert tour -- but not after a scary surprise at its outset.

The trio and its band were just a few songs into the third stop on the trek, June 19 in Noblesville, Ind., when Natalie Maines, already having audible vocal problems, called a halt to the show. That and two other dates were postponed and rescheduled for fall, while Maines was put on “strict doctor’s orders for vocal rest.”

The Chicks have postponed more tour dates to give singer Natalie Maines “vocal rest” after she stopped a concert a half-hour in Sunday night in Indianapolis.

“As a result of strict doctor’s orders for vocal rest, the Chicks are forced to postpone the following shows,” the band announced on social media, listing the cities of Clarkston, MI, Noblesville, IN and Cincinnatti, OH, all of which already have new dates rescheduled for late September or early October.

The Noblesville show listed is the Indianapolis-area concert that was aborted in progress Sunday; the band will make it up Sept. 30. The Cincinnati gig was to have taken place Tuesday; it’s been rescheduled for Oct. 2. The group was set to play Clarkston Wednesday, and that will now go won Sept. 28. As of now, the band is looking to resume its normal schedule Friday in Toronto.

This makes four shows to date that are being or will need to be rescheduled. The first, Sunday night’s show in Indiana, had the band playing a partial set before leaving the stage, then tweeting that fans should hold onto their tickets and await news of a replacement show. No new date has yet been announced for Indianapolis.

Popular on Variety

Reps for the band pointed to the group’s Twitter post and did not immediately respond to questions about the nature of Maines’ malady.

One song before leaving the stage Sunday night, Maines told the crowd that she was already under treatment for whatever was afflicting her. In fan-shot video, she was heard telling the audience she’d try one more number, saying, “Waiting for this shot to kick in,” then clarified, “not a shot of alcohol, a shot of steroids.”

Late Sunday night, the band tweeted, “Indianapolis, we are so sorry we could not give you the show you deserved OR the show we wanted to give you. We will be back… Hold on to your tickets… We love you Indianapolis.”

Although the Chicks have always attracted negative attention on social media, ever since the Bush-comment controversy of 2003, most fans who were actually in attendance at the Indiana show signaled admiration for Maines for trying to continue with the show as long as she did, and seemed pleased at the promise they would ultimately get two nights out for the price of one, even if the first was truncated.

Patty Griffin will be the opening act on the rescheduled dates, as she was Sunday night and would have been in the next three shows.

The Chicks Forced To Postpone Tour Dates Due To Natalie Maines’ Vocal Health

The Chicks

The band announced the news on Monday.

The Chicks are taking a short rest. The band took to Twitter Monday night to reveal that, due to a doctor's orders, they have to postpone the next three dates on their tour.

"As a result of strict doctor’s orders for vocal rest, the Chicks are forced to postpone the following shows," the group announced, listing off their engagements in Noblesville, Indiana, Cincinnati, Ohio and Clarkston, Michigan. The announcement further stated that all three shows have been rescheduled for late September and earlier October.

"The Chicks apologize for the inconvenience and hope to see you all at the new dates," the post continued. Additionally, Patty Griffin will serve as The Chicks' opening act at the rescheduled performances.

The postponement decision comes one day after The Chicks had to cancel a show in Indianapolis that had already begun due to a health emergency suffered by lead singer  Natalie Maines .

The Chicks reportedly stopped a concert approximately 30 minutes in due to Maines' vocal health, which she has yet directly addressed, Variety reports.

According to the outlet, Maines told the crowd shortly before having to cancel the performance that she was being treated for some sort of vocal malady and had taken a steroid shot to be able to perform, but that it had not kicked in yet.

The band later apologized on Twitter, writing, "Indianapolis, we are so sorry we could not give you the show you deserved OR the show we wanted to give you," the statement reads. "We will be back Indianapolis!! Hold onto your tickets."

The Chicks' 2022 Tour just kicked off June 14 in Saint Louis, Missouri.
