First-Ever ‘Filmed for IMAX’ Concert Was Shot on 22 IMAX-Certified Cameras

IMAX Corporation and Pathé Live announced that the INDOCHINE -CENTRAL TOUR concert at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon, France performed on June 25, 2022, was shot by utilizing 22 IMAX-certified cameras —and that made this the first concert ever to be released through the Filmed for IMAX camera program.

First ‘Filmed for IMAX’ concert

As a natural pathway to leverage its business, IMAX invests tons of effort to think out of the box of their cameras. Thus, focusing on filming live events and then bringing them to its theaters, seems like a (very) good idea. The first implementation of this strategy was executed at the INDOCHINE -CENTRAL TOUR concert at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon, France. This live show featured a 147 feet high (45 meters) central tower and the specially designed biggest led screen ever used in a Live concert (27,000 sq ft / 1,400 led panels) — perfect to be screened on IMAX screens. The concert film was directed by Hans Pannecoucke, produced by KMS, Sony Music, and JYL Productions, and distributed exclusively in cinemas by Pathé Live, which specialized in bringing live events to the big screen.

Shot on 22 IMAX-Certified cameras

As stated by IMAX:   “INDOCHINE is a perfect example of how we’re creating unique and immersive entertainment events on the international stage,” said Megan Colligan, President of IMAX Entertainment. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to work with INDOCHINE during their sold-out CENTRAL TOUR, and to be able to give their legions of loyal fans an unforgettable experience.” Also, Pathé Live added: “We’re excited and proud to bring this spectacular show by the most popular and acclaimed French band to our exhibitor partners and cinema audiences. This first-ever Filmed for IMAX concert will offer fans the most immersive and incomparable experience only in movie theatres”. Unfortunately, there’s no info regarding what cameras were used to shoot this event. Nevertheless, we know that certified cameras are: ALEXA LF, MINI LF, 65, Panavision DXL2,   RED Ranger MONSTRO, and Sony VENICE. Hence, we thought that the VENICE would be the best fit for this project. Nonetheless, this hasn’t been confirmed (the VENICE on the featured image of this article is just for illustration purposes).

How/when to watch it?

The event cinemas release will launch exclusively in IMAX theatres across France and select markets on November 23, 2022, before screening for one evening only in non-IMAX theatres the following day. Outside of France, the exclusive event cinema release will play in Belgium, Switzerland, and other select markets, with additional details to be announced in the coming weeks. Furthermore, expect a lot more like this in the near future — watching live concerts that were filmed on IMAX, in an IMAX theater, will be an integral part of the future of the big screen.

Filmed for IMAX Concert Indochine Central Tour In Cinema Scores $2.23M Across France and Select Markets

IMAX and Pathé Live brought French pop-rock band Indochine to IMAX screens last week. Indochine – Central Tour in Cinema is the first recorded music event to be released through the Filmed for IMAX program. The event cinema release topped the French box office on November 24th, surpassing Black Panther: Wakanda Forever that day. IMAX-exclusive encores continued throughout the weekend, with the concert film landing as the top new weekend opener in the market. In France alone, 120,000 tickets were sold for an overall box office total of over $2M. The box office gross matches the previous event cinema record holder in France, the pre-pandemic concert film Mylene Farmer 2019 – The Film .

Indochine – Central Tour in Cinema screened nationwide in France for one night only in 477 cinemas, making it France’s widest release for an event cinema program. An additional 10 IMAX locations also screened the film exclusively abroad in Belgium, Switzerland, and in London, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Melbourne. Though they only represented 5% of all participating locations, the total 26 IMAX locations welcomed 17% of the attendees and delivered 22% of the global box office with $482K. Two additional screenings are scheduled for the Scotiabank Theatre in Montréal on December 11th and December 12th. Shot at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon, France in June 2022, the Central Tour was captured with 22 IMAX certified digital cameras and the live show featured a specially designed LED screen, which IMAX reports is the largest ever used in a live concert at 27,000 sq. ft with 1,400 LED panels.

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the most popular French band, the Central Tour has sold more than 400,000 tickets over its 6 stadium shows. It was launched at Stade de France in front of 97,036 fans which is a record breaking number attendance among all events held at this location.

The spectacular live show features a 147 feet high (45 meters) central tower and the specially designed biggest LED screen ever used in a live concert.

Indochine is a French pop-rock and new wave band formed in Paris in 1981 and has sold over 13 million albums and singles, making them the best-selling French band of all time.

NEW YORK and LEON , France , Dec. 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) and PATHE LIVE brought French pop-rock band INDOCHINE to IMAX screens last week. After IMAX exclusive previews on Wednesday 23 rd November, CENTRAL TOUR - the first recorded music event to be released through the Filmed for IMAX program – topped the French box office in wide release on Thursday, November 24 (surpassing Disney/Marvel's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on that day). Continuing with IMAX-exclusive encores throughout the weekend, the concert film was also the top new opener this past weekend in the market.

In France alone, 120,000 tickets were sold for an overall Box-office total of $2.08M . Playing widely in the premium-priced IMAX screens, this box office gross matches the previous record holder for an event cinema release in France (the concert film " Mylene Farmer 2019 – The Film" which scored $2.08M ) which was also distributed by PATHE LIVE on November 2019 before pandemic times.

The film was screened nationwide for one night only on Thursday, November 24 in 477 cinemas (the widest ever release for an event cinema program), including 16 IMAX screens. Previews were held the night before at those 16 IMAX screens, which then continued for 5 days of exclusive encore screenings.

An additional 10 IMAX locations also screened the film exclusively abroad in Belgium , Switzerland , and the cities of London , Berlin , Amsterdam , and Melbourne .

Two additional screenings are scheduled for the Scotiabank Theatre in Montréal on December 11 and December 12 .
