What is Cultural Heritage?
Cultural Heritage is an expression of the ways of living developed by a community and passed on from generation to generation, including customs, practices, places, objects, artistic expressions and values. Cultural heritage is among the most fundamental basics for identity consolidation, creativity and national self-esteem in any country. Research in its various fields sheds light on some historic ambiguities, acknowledges the values resulted from the deep-rooted heritage, and accelerate the recognition of latent values in a country’s cultural heritage. Cultural Heritage is often expressed as either Intangible or Tangible Cultural Heritage (ICOMOS, 2002).
Handicrafts of Iran
Iran's handicraft is one of the most significant artistic industries that has deep roots in the culture and history of this land. Iranian handicraft has a very wide range of diversity and comes first in the world with a wide gap with other handicraft industries. Iran has many ancient crafts. The extent and breadth of these branches can be divided into several subclauses, which indicate the diversity and flourishing of the level of traditional arts and its roots in the rich history of Iran.

Introduction and Historical Background
This entry seeks to provide empirical evidence concerning heritage preservation in the Islamic Republic of Iran. A brief description of the country’s tourism industry is also presented as this relates to the cultural heritage.
Until 1935, Iran was historically referred to as Persia when Reza Shah Pahlavi formally announced to call the country by its native name, Iran. Under the leadership of Ayatollah Khomeini, the current Islamic Republic of Iran was founded in 1979. Iran has an impressive history and fascinating culture. The Iranians are very proud of their culture and history. It is important to note that Iran is not an Arab country. Iran comes from the word “Aryan” with its official language being Farsi, an Indo-European language. Although Iran is portrayed in the media as a society of purely Islamic fundamentalists, the country is also comprised of people practicing other religions making it, in reality, a multicultural national entity.

Over 5 Million Foreign Tourists Visit Iran in 11-Month Period: UNWTO
- January, 30, 2024 - 11:17
- Society/Culture news
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The World Tourism Organization of the United Nations in its latest report said more than five million foreign tourists visited Iran in the first 11 months of 2023, registering a 42 percent growth compared to the same period a year earlier.
The international tourism body in a report revealed a boom in Iran’s tourism industry in 2023.
The arrival of foreign tourists to Iran witnessed a 42% hike from January to November 2023, it said.
The report added that over 3.74 million foreign tourists had visited Iran from January to November 2022 and the number rose to more than 5 million in the first 11 months of 2023.
The 42% growth in the arrival of foreign tourists to Iran in 2023 came as Iran’s tourism industry experienced a significant slump during the outbreak of the coronavirus.
Only 880,000 foreign tourists had visited Iran in 2021, but the number grew to 4.11 million in 2022.

Iran’s tourist arrivals reach 2.93 million in Jan-Jul 2023, UNWTO barometer indicates
TEHRAN—Foreign tourist arrivals in Iran reached some 2.93 million between January and July 2023, according to the latest United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) World Tourism Barometer.
Although the country’s performance as a tourism destination is still far below that of 2019, which was before the start of the Covid pandemic, it is improving slightly compared to last year's statistics, ISNA reported on Wednesday.
The average statistics of Iran’s tourism from January to August 2023 is 50% lower than the same period in 2019 based on the barometer that tracks the sector’s post-pandemic recovery over the course of 2023 up to the end of July.
Accordingly, Iran attracted 181,423 foreign travelers in January; 327, 816 people in February; 363,547 in March; 381.769 in April, 537,837 in May; 551.142 in June; and 590, 350 in July.
Another statistic compiled by Iran’s tourism ministry indicates the country saw 3.35 million tourist arrivals in the first half of the current Iranian calendar year (started March 21), which soars 38 percent year on year.
The rate of tourist arrivals, mainly from Iran’s neighboring countries, has been “promising”, according to Ali-Asghar Shalbafian, who is the deputy tourism minister.
“The course of attracting inbound passengers was promising so that from the first of the year to end of Shahrivar, three million and 354 thousand travelers entered the country, which shows a growth of 38% compared to a year earlier,” Shalbafian said in a press conference last week.
He probably hinted at the country’s tourism revival as coronavirus restrictions have been eased, but remained way below pre-pandemic levels.
The Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, seeks a border-easing strategy based on which it may unilaterally drop visa requirements for passport holders of 60 states, the official noted. The scheme recommends unilateral cancellation of visas with Muslim countries and neighboring states to increase international arrivals, the official said.
The Islamic Republic expects to reap a bonanza from its numerous tourist spots such as bazaars, museums, mosques, bridges, bathhouses, madrasas, mausoleums, churches, towers, and mansions, of which 27 are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
