Note (4-21-22): This story has been updated with a new schedule, including opening acts.

Alicia Keys is ready to get back on the road and perform her new and timeless hits. Her world tour in support of her seventh album,  ALICIA ,   has been rescheduled for 2022. It was originally  slated to launch in June 2020 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Keys will kick off the European leg of the world tour on June 9, 2022, at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena. From then until July 15, 2022, she will play shows in other countries, including Germany, France, and Spain, to name a few.

On August 2, 2022, Keys will return to the states to perform the first North American show at Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheatre in Charlotte, N.C. Additional cities to hear Keys belt out favorites include Baltimore, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Tampa, and Atlanta. The tour will wrap up on September 24, 2022, at the Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville.

Ticket information can be found on her official website .

In March, Keys made Billboard history, becoming the only artist to  claim the most number-one hits  on the Adult R&B Airplay chart. She has 12 chart leaders, with “So Done” featuring Khalid as the last. The song appears on ALICIA , considered an  “artistic breakthrough”  for Keys by Rated R&B.

Keys is the subject of a  YouTube docu-series  slated to arrive sometime later this year.

Before then, she hadn’t been on an official tour since 2013’s Set the World on Fire tour. Now, it seems, Keys is making up for lost time.

Alicia Keys has rescheduled her Sept. 9 San Diego concert, which was postponed the day of the show because of weather concerns.

The new date is Nov. 5 and will be held at San Diego State University’s Viejas Arena. That is a short walk from where Keys’ Sept. 9 concert was scheduled to be held at SDSU’s Cal Coast Credit Union Amphitheatre.

Sept. 9, 2022

This will mark the fourth effort by the 15-time Grammy Award-winner to perform in San Diego since she and her family became La Jolla residents in 2019. Her sold-out 2020 concert at the SDSU amphitheater was postponed until 2021 because of the pandemic, then postponed again until Sept. 9, then postponed yet again.

Keys’ current tour is scheduled to conclude Sept, 26 in Nashville. Apart from her new Nov. 5 San Diego concert, her website does not list any other performances for the rest of this year.

Alicia Keys, underachiever? Her album sales top 65 million, but could more risk-taking pay off big?

The 15-time Grammy Award winner, now a La Jolla resident, will perform her first concert here of the decade at SDSU

Sept. 7, 2022

Tickets for Keys’ Sept. 9 SDSU concert can be exchanged online through Ticketmaster for tickets for her Nov. 5 SDSU concert, or can be refunded online.

Concerts at Viejas Arena can accommodate up to 13,500 attendees, depending on the seating configuration. The capacity of SDSU’s Open Air Theatre, where Keys’ sold-out Sept. 9 concert was scheduled, is 4,500.

This suggests that more tickets could go on sale for her new Nov. 5 Viejas Arena concert. Live Nation, the concert’s promoter, has not yet disclosed if — or when — any new tickets will be available for the show. The Ticketmaster link for Keys’ Nov. 5 concert reads: “Sorry, tickets are not currently available online.”

Is Alicia Keys an underachiever, an overachiever, or both?

A 15-time Grammy Award winner, the classically trained pianist is a versatile singer and songwriter who has made a broad impact with — and beyond — her music.

Keys is currently on the North American leg of her 2022 world tour, which was pushed back from 2020 to last year — and then once more from 2021 — because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tour includes a sold-out concert Sept. 9 at the 4,600-capacity Cal Coast Credit Union Amphitheatre at San Diego State University. The venue is about 18 miles southeast of the seaside La Jolla mansion Keys lives in with her husband, noted record producer Swizz Beatz, and their two sons, Egypt, 11, and Genesis, 7.

Alicia Keys emerges as buyer of La Jolla’s striking Razor House

Alicia Keys has shelled out $20.8 million for La Jolla’s Razor House, which is the priciest sale the coastal community has seen this year

Sept. 6, 2019

This will be her first concert in her adopted hometown since Keys moved here several years ago. The New York-born musician has kept a decidedly low-profile, although she and her husband did attend hip-hop dynamo Nas’ concert last summer at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.

Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz are shown on May 2 at the 2022 Met Gala in New York City.

Striking gold and platinum

Keys’ albums have sold more than 65 million copies worldwide. They were propelled by a slew of hit songs that include “Fallin’,” “If I Ain’t Got You,” “No One,” “Girl On Fire” and — with Jay-Z — 2009’s “Empire State of Mind,” which she subsequently re-did on her own as “Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down.”

In April, Keys’ 2001 debut album, “Songs in A Minor,” was inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. Her candid 2020 memoir, “More Myself: A Journey,” made the New York Times bestsellers list, while this March saw the release of her first graphic novel, “Girl on Fire.”

Alicia Keys: This girl is on fire

2013 has already been a banner year for the singer and songwriter, and she’s just getting started

March 6, 2013

An entrepreneur with her own skin-care line, Keys’ credits also include work as a film, TV and Broadway theater producer. In 2003, she co-founded Keep A Child Alive, a nonprofit organization that provides care and support to families with HIV and AIDS in Africa and India.

Keys, 41, is also a devoted social justice champion. Her performance at the 2016 Democratic National Convention included an impassioned plea for peace and solidarity.

“Until we deal with gun violence in this country, we can’t claim ‘home of the brave’,” Keys told the DNC audience. “It’s time to stand together and be unified. We have to show the world that bigotry and fear will never win, ’cause we have so much in common.”

Given her many accomplishments and commitment to the causes she supports, it might seem churlish to even suggest Keys may be an underachiever.

Her many awards and heady commercial success are formidable testaments to what she has accomplished, after signing a major record label deal when she was just 15. But Keys’ body of work as a musician has only sometimes revealed the full depth of her artistry — and her potential for creating truly innovative work that explores new vistas by digging deeper into her creativity.

By her own account, it was only with her eighth album — 2016’s socially charged “Here” — that Keys largely cast commercial considerations to the wind. It was then that she let her emotions fully come to the fore.

“Here” is a brave if uneven album that sees her addressing such diverse topics as climate change (“Kill Your Mama”), addiction (“Illusion of Bliss”), impossible beauty standards (“Girl Can’t Be Herself”), same-sex relationships (“Where Do We Begin Now”) and racial inequities (the Nina Simone-inspired “The Gospel”).

Alicia Keys

‘Challenge the status quo’

Speaking of her “Here” album in a 2020 interview with The Guardian newspaper, Keys said: “That was the first time in my life that I didn’t compromise. I wanted to challenge the status quo, and challenge my own self to be truthful. You work so hard at being digestible, at being something that people are not offended by.

“It becomes a habit — especially for women — and it really starts in childhood. For our whole life we’re trying to figure out how to be the good girl, when really, the bad girl is not bad, they’re just expressing another side, or in touch with anger or frustration. Finally, I turned around, like: ‘I just want to talk about the sh-- that makes me mad’.”

It was a sound move, even if “Here” remains the lowest-selling album of Keys’ career.

Her follow-up, 2020’s more upbeat “Alicia,” saw its release date pushed back by half a year because of the pandemic. It sounded like a retreat, musically, to safer, more listener-friendly territory, perhaps in response to the limited commercial success of “Here.”

But the pandemic did more than just delay “Alicia” and Keys’ world tour. It gave her an unplanned period of extended solitude at home here with her family.

With no concert dates or deadline pressures, Keys was free to ruminate and to explore making music simply for the sake of making music.

The result was her largely homegrown 2021 double-album, “Keys,” which — at 21 songs and about 90 minutes — is her most expansive and ambitious release to date.

The album features two distinctly different discs. The first, the intimate, 11-song “Originals,” puts Keys and her supple singing and piano playing in the spotlight. The second, the 10-song “Unlocked,” reimagines eight of the songs from “Originals,” but in newly mixed or remixed versions that are more beat-conscious and comparatively radio-friendly, if still musically left of center.

For those listeners who want to hear Keys stretching out and taking chances, “Originals” offers many pleasures They include the bluesy torch songs “Old Memories” and “Nat King Cole,” the jazzy ballad “Is It Insane” and the gospel-flavored “Dead End Road.”

All four songs are reimagined, some subtly, some overtly, in their “Unlocked” versions. The intertwining nature of “Keys” — which presents two disparate but complementary versions of the same music — is a fascinating creative exploration, if not an altogether unprecedented one.

Shania Twain simultaneously released three versions of her “Up!” album in 2002, while Taylor Swift has thus far released two versions of two of her albums, “Fearless” and “Red.”

But Swift’s new versions, which were released a decade or more after the original albums came out, were prompted by a legal dispute over the ownership of her songs. And Twain spent several years working on her three versions of “Up!” (one country, one pop, and one fashioned in the style of Bollywood film music from India).

Keys, conversely, put “Keys” together in a much shorter period of time and made it as a double album, not two individual releases. The quiet, fanfare-free release of “Keys” at the end of last year suggests she realized this was not an album that would propel her back to the top of the charts.

And that is precisely the point.

Because what makes “Keys” so enjoyable, and commendable, is that Keys was willing to take chances and experiment, to stretch at will, without worrying about how listeners might respond.

It’s a move one might expect from a cult artist, not from a high-profile performer who has sold more than 65 million albums. And it’s a move that strongly suggests that the more curves Alicia Keys takes in the future, the better.

Did you know?

The second verse of Bob Dylan’s 2006 song, “Thunder on the Mountain,” is about Alicia Keys and references the New York City neighborhood in which she grew up.

I was thinkin’ ‘bout Alicia Keys, couldn’t keep from crying / But she was born in Hell’s Kitchen, I was living down the line / I’m wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be / I been looking for her, even clear through Tennessee

Alicia Keys Details Son Genesis' Wholesome Reunion with Taylor Swift: 'Is She Gonna Remember Me?'

T he singer recalled her son meeting Swift at the 'Eras Tour' in 2023, years after they first met at the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Awards

Some people want it all, but Alicia Keys ' son Genesis just wanted to meet Taylor Swift again!

During a Friday night appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon , Keys, 43, described what it was like to raise a Swiftie in her and Swizz Beatz 's youngest son.

As she explained, the 9-year-old first met Swift when he was younger at the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Awards, as he was seated next to the musician. In a video shared by host Jimmy Fallon , Genesis could be seen playfully waving at the 34-year-old "Karma" singer while his mom was on stage giving a speech.

"He was flirting. ... I was pouring my heart out about all my thank you's, and he's [waving at Swift]," Keys joked.

Keys then mentioned a time when Genesis got to hang out with Swift during an Eras Tour stop in August 2023. At the time, Keys applauded Swift on Instagram for her "big beautiful spirit that makes everyone feel loved."

"They met up again recently, and he was like, 'Is she gonna remember me?' And it was a whole thing," Keys said on The Tonight Show . "He was like, 'She knew me since I was three, right, mom?' "

The encounter went smoothly, as Keys shared behind-the-scenes footage of Genesis getting both a kiss on the cheek and a touching note from his idol.

Genesis' fandom extends beyond Swift, too, as he's also a big fan of Billie Eilish , Keys revealed on The Tonight Show. Keys said Genesis even attempted to convince his mom to let him leave her a voice message at one point.

"He just asked me every single day, 'Mom can I please leave her a voice message?' And I'm like, 'I don't know.' Like, what kind of voice message are you gonna leave her? He was like, 'I'm just gonna say, like, ... I would like to be friends and I really like her music.' And so he leaves her this whole message after harassing me for days and days on end," Keys laughed. "And then he continued to harass me [about] if she wrote him a message back."

"And so every night I couldn't go to sleep, he wakes me up in the morning," she added. "In the nighttime, he won't go to sleep. 'Did she write me? Did she write me? Did she write me? Did she leave me a message?' She left him a message. Can you believe it? It was so sweet. ... Big love to Billie and Taylor."

While Eilish's message to Genesis wasn't shared on air, Swift's message to Genesis during his August Eras Tour visit took him by surprise. In a handwritten note, Swift wrote that she was "so excited" when she found out he was attending the show, and referred to him as her "friend."

"I hope you have so much fun at the show," Swift wrote. "And I'll be waving at you. Love, Taylor."

In response, Genesis shared a message of his own for Swift via his mom's social media: "I loved your show and I'm happy that I got to meet you again."

Has Fashion Canceled Canceling?

The recent history of John Galliano, Dolce & Gabbana and even Ye suggests the answer may be yes.

Ye in a black windbreaker with the hood up and his mouth slightly agape. A woman with dark, cropped hair, wearing a structured black leather top, sits next to him.

By Vanessa Friedman

““High & Low: John Galliano,” the feature-length documentary about the former Dior designer’s fall from grace after a drunken antisemitic rant in a Paris bar in 2011, and his long climb back, is interesting for a number of reasons. It is a chance to hear from Mr. Galliano himself about his struggles, for one, and to look back at the fashion world of the 1990s. But just as striking is the number of think pieces it has spawned meditating on Mr. Galliano’s transgressions, repentance and, it seems, current state of forgiveness.

Indeed, the film’s greatest significance may have less to do with the story it tells than with what it seems to represent: the official end of Mr. Galliano’s time in the wilderness. It serves as a coda to a period that began with his firing from Dior and subsequent conviction for hate crimes and that lasted through a prolonged period of atonement and a new job at Maison Margiela, where Mr. Galliano’s work is once again being celebrated .

As such, it also reflects a shift away from the era of outrage, particularly in fashion. “It does seem like, in the end, everyone is allowed back in,” said Achim Berg, a former lead of McKinsey & Company’s global apparel, fashion and luxury group.

Though individuals in other industries have been canceled and have returned to public life — Aziz Ansari and Louis C.K. spring to mind — fashion is unique in the way it uses people to humanize brands, meaning their actions are intrinsically connected to the fortunes of a much larger company, as are their creations.

Perhaps the only equivalent is the restaurant world, though designers and celebrities generally have higher name recognition than even the most famous chefs, and the financial implications are significantly greater. As a result, it is possible that in this case, as with many trends, whither fashion, whither the culture. Or vice versa.

After all, beyond Mr. Galliano, a brief list of the once-disgraced-now-re-emerging includes:

Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, who was broadly excoriated and lost his corporate deals after his own racist and antisemitic statements in 2022. Last month, however, Ye appeared in the front row at the Marni show, and he is currently featured in Y/Project’s 10th-anniversary lookbook, along with Charli XCX and Tyga. Adidas, despite ending its official relationship with him, continues to promote and sell its Yeezy stock.

Balenciaga, which was inundated by a social media mob in 2022 after a poorly judged holiday ad campaign caused some people to allege that the brand was promoting child pornography. Now it not only has the stamp of approval of brand ambassadors Kim Kardashian (formerly a fan of the brand who distanced herself after the controversy but has very publicly returned to the fold), Nicole Kidman and Michelle Yeoh, but has found new momentum after a highly praised recent show, which shrugged off the hair shirt of atonement for high-octane statement-making.

Dolce & Gabbana, which suffered a fall from grace in 2018, when it appeared to offend all of China with an ad campaign that trafficked in racial stereotype, and which was preceded by numerous slurs about size and sexual orientation. In 2022, the brand not only appeared to sponsor an entire Kardashian wedding but also collaborated with Kim , and recently has been ubiquitous on the red carpet. Both Usher and Alicia Keys wore the brand for their performance at the Super Bowl, watched by 123.7 million viewers .

Marchesa, founded by Georgina Chapman, the former wife of Harvey Weinstein, which went quiet in the immediate aftermath of the exposure of Mr. Weinstein’s criminal actions, but has once more become an awards show go-to for the likes of Hannah Waddingham and Padma Lakshmi.

Alexander Wang, who was accused of sexual misconduct in 2021 , then settled a lawsuit and held a show last year attended by the great and good of New York and Los Angeles.

Theories of Relativity

It’s easy to dismiss fashion’s fickleness as a product of its superficiality — this is, after all, an industry predicated on pushing change almost every four months — but something more complicated and meaningful may be going on.

“I think it’s directly correlated with the industry’s current obsession with discretion and propriety — its nonconfrontational nature and risk aversion,” said Gabriella Karefa-Johnson , the stylist and activist, nodding to the tendency in fashion to play it safe in the face of an uncertain economic and political climate — to revert to the known ( white male designers with the same facial hair , for example), even if the known has some skeletons in its closet.

Mr. Berg said that perhaps it was simply a question of proportion. There are so many tensions in the world at the moment, with so many enormous implications, that everything else seems less serious in comparison. Also, he said, “After the last American election, all parameters about what is and what is not acceptable have changed” — and not just in fashion. In his view, cancel culture itself may have been a phenomenon of the Covid era.

“We may be experiencing a degree of outrage fatigue,” said Susan Scafidi, the founder of the Fashion Law Institute at Fordham University. “With waves of scandal, the first is the worst, but every apology that we collectively accept lessens the drama of the next incident.”

This is especially true when the actions being apologized for vary so widely, from sexual assault to hate crimes to racial slurs to guilt by association — and from actual crimes that can, and sometimes are, prosecuted in a court of law to crimes in the court of public opinion.

And yet, as Julie Zerbo, the founder of The Fashion Law website, pointed out, the details and severity of the offense may differ, but the story lines are broadly the same. They start with an online outcry, followed by an apology, a retreat to “focus on the work” (or some such), a fallow period and then a re-emergence, chastened but accepted. That pattern has become so predictable, it is almost rote. And it encourages a tendency to see all of the cases as the same, to conflate the most serious with the least.

Especially because transgressions look less shocking the further they recede in the rearview mirror, or the more they are replaced by new ones. In a world of shortened attention spans, people can pay attention to only so much wrongdoing at once.

It is perhaps not an accident that the founders of Diet Prada, the Instagram fashion watchdog account that rose to prominence on its willingness to call out wrongdoing, declined to comment for this article and have pivoted toward broader reporting on fashion.

Crime and Punishment

Is there anything that is not forgivable? “For those who don’t regain their former status — Anand Jon and Harvey Weinstein come to mind — a key reason is that their transgressions are so serious that the justice system intervenes,” Ms. Scafidi said.

It’s also worth noting that, as Ms. Zerbo said, what happens in the echo chamber of, say, fashion X and what the global consumer knows can be different. Balenciaga never experienced the same blowback in Asia that it did in the West. And while celebrities were chary of Dolce & Gabbana for a few months after the China blowup, they soon came around when red carpets (and free trips to Italy for the couture extravaganza) beckoned.

“None of these people were ever actually canceled,” Ms. Karefa-Johnson said. They were simply moved out of the spotlight. “Eventually enough time passes that the canceled can uncancel themselves — through their work, or their lingering ‘genius,’ or their moneymaking potential or their social capital that never fully depreciated,” she said.

For Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue, who was instrumental in the return of at least three of the canceled designers — Mr. Galliano, whose return to fashion she helped orchestrate ; Ms. Chapman, whom she featured in Vogue in 2018; and Demna of Balenciaga, whose mea culpa she published early last year — this is more of a course correction after a reversion to mob mentality.

“To me the issue isn’t only forgiveness, but also the severity with which we judge people in the first place,” she wrote in an email. “I feel quite strongly that our culture has begun to move too quickly toward condemnation — toward a feeling of certainty that particular offenses or mistakes are unforgivable. The truth is we rarely know the full story, and all of us are fallible.”

Though Ms. Wintour acknowledged that there was behavior that was unforgivable, she declined to specify what might qualify as such, but presumably cases like those Ms. Scafidi cited, which involve a crime. Generally, she said, “we need to show more compassion, understanding and forgiveness, not less.”

Can You Forgive but Not Forget?

The problem is, how does one measure repentance? No one can look into someone else’s soul. Is it in money earmarked for the injured party in perpetuity? In the work itself? Public shaming requires public agreement as to what constitutes atonement and how that can or should be assessed, and that’s a far harder subject to address. Easier, really, to shrug and move on.

“Speaking for myself, I have not forgiven Dolce & Gabbana,” Ms. Karefa-Johnson said. She has refused to shoot that brand’s clothing for the last five years, in part because she found the public apology unconvincing. “For me, there is a very clear route to redemption. It looks a lot like financial reparations”

The issue, Ms. Scafidi said, is this: “At the end of the day, consumers make fashion choices while looking in the mirror, not at the designer behind it. It can be hard to turn away from a flattering look to uphold an invisible principle.” And where consumers and their wallets go, companies follow. To a certain extent, it has been ever thus.

“The ur-text for the public pardoning of a designer may be Chanel after World War II,” Ms. Scafidi went on, referring to the continued global embrace of the brand as a paragon of chic despite Coco Chanel’s role as a Nazi collaborator , now being told onscreen in the Apple TV+ fictionalized series “The New Look.”

“With every biography or dramatization that reminds us of her Nazi associations,” Ms. Scafidi said, “the price of the 2.55 bag seems to rise a bit higher.” She wasn’t talking about money.

Apple Original Content for the Vision Pro Is Absolutely Stunning – And Casually Terrifying

Apple VisionPro

I’m balancing on a tightrope, 3,000 feet above the Nordic fjords. As I glance down into the watery abyss, my stomach churns. Then, with a few flicks of my index finger, I’ve ditched Scandinavia for Pangea, where I’m frolicking with velociraptors who come within centimeters of my face to sniff and size me up. Next, I find myself in a present-day sanctuary for dehorned rhinos, so close that I can count individual eyelashes on the majestic creatures (also, rhinos have eyelashes?).

On a sleepy post-Oscars weekday, I was taken to an Apple office stacked with soothing beige fabrics. I was fitted for the device by a man with the bedside manner of a concierge doctor, locking the headset in place with both single and dual loop bands. I was advised that the weight of the Vision Pro should be evenly distributed between my forehead and neck (impossible, ironically, due the withering effect of years spent staring down at an iPhone).

After a full facial scan and a brief orientation, I quickly picked up the rhythm of the mixed-reality machine. A perfect replica of my field of vision appeared in the headset, along with a menu of apps. Anything I looked at directly became selectable. My index finger and thumb served as hardware.

My eyes were the cursor arrow, and my fingers were the mouse, it was explained. The VisionPro has been trotted out for tech bloggers and now lives on dazzling display in Apple stores around the world, but this was the company’s first time screening its original content for press. This included immersive shorts filmed with proprietary cameras, ones that offer dizzying panoramic views delivered with a depth and clarity that make your palms sweat.

Next, I watched a studio session with Alicia Keys where she mashed up her song “No One” with Dawn Penn’s iconic reggae track “No No No.” My proximity to Keys left me a bit breathless (she has amazing skin, by the way, which instantly made me think that talent is going to have to get very comfortable being seen in this super hi-def medium — moisturize!). Lost in the music, it occurred to me that I was sitting between Dominic and an Apple publicist swaying and humming in an otherwise silent room. Only I could hear the audio. It made me self-conscious, but it was nothing I or any other consumer couldn’t eventually overcome. It also hit me that, one day, an industry like air travel could be transformed by technology like this. Rows and rows of people trying to escape the hell of modern flying by strapping into headsets, dancing or gaming or watching MMA on a dead silent plane while the flight crew looks on. I shared this scenario with a production company CEO this week, who had a blunt response: “We’re one step closer to becoming the fat blob people from Wall-E, who sit in recliners and watch TV their entire lives.” This won’t happen tomorrow, though, mostly because buying the device means ponying up nearly $4,000. It’s considerably cheaper to watch your seatback screen.

After the Nordic highliner, dinosaur romp and my time with the glamorous rhinos, I screened the first-ever sports film shot with Apple’s immersive cameras. Following the Major League Soccer cup, the film was shot in 8K 3D, offered a 180-degree view and came with spatial audio. As I watched a stationary camera erected atop the soccer goal and saw the entire field of players vividly fighting for glory, I heard cash registers ringing. The Vision Pro can and should immediately market itself as an unprecedented viewing experience for pro sports. At the end of the film, the winning soccer team popped several bottles of champagne. A cork flew so directly into the camera that I instinctively put my hands up to protect myself.

All in, I watched 30 minutes of footage. The device got hot, especially around my forehead, about halfway through. I barely noticed but that probably would be an issue over time. What was immediately clear is the opportunity filmmakers will have to make enthralling content for such a sensory device — and, perhaps, how many will decry it as the latest downfall of cinema as we know it. I thought about the serene forests I “walked” through during my demo, zooming in on raindrops hitting tree leaves, and how transformative Vision Pro content might be for people living with conditions like PTSD. Could it perhaps eventually cure my fear of heights through exposure therapy?
