Best time for travel peaks of europe: the alps to the dolomites featuring france, switzerland, liechtenstein, austria, and italy.

While just about any month is great to visit France, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy, there are a few prime times of the year for the Peaks of Europe  tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: Milder weather and fewer crowds in the shoulder season make spring a nice time to visit.

Summer: A great time for this tour is in the summer, with colorful, breathtaking scenery in every direction. It’s the busy season, so you’ll see lots of other travelers. While the weather can get quite warm, the Alps tend to be a bit cooler than the surrounding areas.

Fall: You’ll still encounter crowds through mid-October, but the weather is sensational.

In Chamonix you have the choice between 2 activities. Explore the legendary Mont Blanc – Europe's tallest peak and birthplace of mountaineering – your way. Ascend the Aiguille du Midi by cable car to an elevation of over 12,600 feet (3,842 meters)*. This is the closest you can get to the summit of Europe’s tallest peak. Your second choice is to relax aboard the Tramway du Mont Blanc rack-railway taking in its vintage charm and the impressive views from the Eagle’s Nest, located 7,782 feet above sea level (2,372 meters).

Continue your exploration of Italy with a two-night stay in Venice, the “Queen of the Adriatic”. From your centrally located hotel, the city is yours to uncover. Join a local guide for a walking tour of this incredible city, and enjoy ample free time to meander amongst the historic streets, taking in the city’s unique architecture and gondola-laden canals.

  • Mogliano Veneto - Venice
  • Continue your exploration of Italy with a 2-night stay in Venice, the “Queen of the Adriatic.” After a motorboat transfer, meet your local guide for a walking tour of this incredible city, including the Bridge of Sighs, the Clock Tower, and St. Mark’s Square. You’ll also learn about the Venetian art of glassblowing during an interactive demonstration.
  • Enjoy a day to explore Venice at your leisure. From your centrally located hotel, the city is yours to uncover. Meander amongst the historic streets, taking in the city’s unique architecture and gondola-laden canals. You may choose to experience the local cuisine at a typical bacaro, a small wine-bar where locals stop for a glass of wine – traditionally called ombra – and a quick bite of local tapas – that Venetians call cicchetti. Or take a local public waterbus ride to the nearby island of San Giorgio which offers spectacular views of St. Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace.
  • Venice - Tour Ends
  • Say arrivederci to Italy as your tour comes to a close.

Cross into Germany for a visit to Oberammergau, the world-renowned home of the Passion Play. This Bavarian village of traditionally painted houses comes together every 10 years* to perform a marathon 10-hour folk theatre rendition of the Passion of Christ in thanksgiving for escaping the great plague of 1633. After visiting the theatre site and town, indulge in homemade Tyrolean cuisine at a local restaurant before returning to Seefeld.

Map for the Germany, Italy & Switzerland tour

Pack your appetite for adventure (and pasta) and board your overnight flight to Italy. This is the time to rest up—new countries, cultures, and cuisines await.

Benvenuto (welcome) to the Venice Region, otherwise known as Veneto. Once one of the richest and largest maritime trade empires in the world, the sheer number of canals, bridges, and boats should come as no surprise. You’ll drop off your bags, stretch your legs, then venture over to an authentic neighborhood on the western side of Venice.

In the evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner of local cuisine and drinks with fellow travelers at an authentic local spot. Afterwards, you’re free to take the party elsewhere!

Today's highlights:

  • Land at the airport and meet a waiting EF representative.
  • Transfer to your hotel to check in and check out your room.
  • Get familiar with the area around your hotel with an introductory walk with your Tour Director.
  • Travel to and tour the Santa Margherita neighborhood of Venice.

On your first full day of adventure, you’ll arrive at the gorgeous St. Mark’s Square after a short boat ride into the city. You’ll be met by a local guide who’ll show you the famous sights of the city.

  • Arrive in true Venetian style at St. Mark’s square via the Giudecca Canal.
  • Stand in the footprints of history on the Rialto Bridge, the oldest spanning the Grand Canal.
  • See for yourself why the 15th century Scala Contarini del Bovolo staircase literally means ‘of the snail’.
  • Watch a local artist in action during a glass blowing demonstration.

Free time suggestions

Gondola Ride on the Grand Canal: What better way to experience a city known for its bridges and canals than with a gondola ride down the grandest of them all? Your Tour Director will point you in the right direction if decide you want a ride but finding the gondoliers yourself won’t be hard either—just look for their traditional uniform of black pants and striped shirts. Libreria Acqua Alta: Calling itself the most beautiful bookstore in the world, this gem is absolutely worth the visit. Wander through charming rooms stacked wall-to-wall with books in this unique shop that battles the nearly constant flooding by placing some of its books in waterproof basins, bathtubs, and boats.

Put the canals of Venice in the rearview and set your sights on the city known for Mozart and The Sound of Music . Along the way you’ll stop in the town of Innsbruck, Austria, a popular destination for winter sports featuring colorful architecture set against the jagged peaks of the Alps.

  • Travel by bus from Venice to Salzburg, gaining altitude and a newfound appreciation of the towering Alps as you go.
  • Take a deep breath of fresh mountain air while you explore the scenic town of Innsbruck with your Tour Director.
  • Arrive in Salzburg and enjoy a free evening to explore the city on your own.

Sitting on the northern boundary of the Alps, Salzburg is known for its well-preserved baroque architecture and stunning alpine setting. Its name literally means ‘salt castle’ but we suggest opting for a delicious local strudel instead.

  • Join a local guide for a tour of the city including Kapitelplatz, Residenzplatz, and Old Town.
  • Stand before Sphaera , a prominent piece of art featuring a large golden sphere with a man perched on top.
  • Browse Alter Markt, the oldest weekly market in the city known for its selection of dairy, cabbages, and herbs.

Hohensalzburg Fortress: Dominating the city’s skyline atop Festungsberg mountain, this fortress is the largest fully preserved castle in Central Europe. Built in 1077 and never once captured by foreign troops, it nonetheless provides an amazing vantage point for its visitors. Sound of Music Tour: Walk in the footsteps of the von Trapp family as you explore original shooting locations and pose for the camera—just remember to think about a few of your favorite things to make sure you’re in character.

Note: This excursion is seasonal and only runs from mid-May through mid-October. Availability is subject to your tour’s departure date and weather that day. Remember how much you loved the playground? Today will be like that, except the slide is nearly a mile and a half long and comes with magnificent panoramic views of the Alps.

Make your way to a major center of German art, music, and innovation. Considered by many to be the greatest beer destination in the world, it’s no wonder that it was rated as the world’s most livable city. And even if you’re not there during Oktoberfest, the beer still flows freely. Prost!

  • Follow a local guide on a tour of Munich’s main attractions including Frauenkirche, Marienplatz, and Glockenspiel.
  • Tempt yourself with the delicious array of food and drink in the massive farmer’s market and beer garden of Viktualienmarkt.
  • Stop by one of Munich’s famous beer halls and have a stein on your own dime.

Let your heart, or your stomach, take the lead on a day that’s completely up to you. Explore, sample the local fare (hint: sausages are wildly popular), and keep your eyes and ears peeled for a live show from a traditional Oompah band. Lederhosen optional.

BMW Museum: Pick up a ticket and discover an impressive collection of over 120 of BMW’s most valuable and attractive automobiles and motorcycles. The past, present, and future are all on display at this monument to German innovation and engineering. Bike through Englischer Garten: One of the world’s largest urban parks at over 900 acres, this English style garden has a lot to explore. Pedal your way by the Japanese teahouse, a stream with a standing wave surfed by locals, and more.

Dachau memorial site (extra cost)

Once a typical German town, Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp during World War II.

Get ready to roll out of Germany—but not before making a photo stop outside a castle so picturesque it’s rumored to be the inspiration behind Cinderella’s castle. Then it’s off to Switzerland, home to some of the finest chocolate in the world.

  • Climb aboard the private bus for a scenic ride across the European countryside.
  • Visit Neuschwanstein Castle and snap some epic photos.
  • Check another country off your list as you arrive Switzerland.

Breathe in fresh lake air with hints of fresh chocolate (it might only be your imagination) as you explore a charming city overlooked by the snow-capped peaks of the Alps. It won’t take long to see why so many people flock to Switzerland—and seemingly never want to leave.

Farewell Dinner Share some laughs and any stories you may have missed along the way at this included farewell dinner with the group.

  • Get introduced to the city with a guided tour from your Tour Director.
  • Stand in wonder before Löwendenkmal, an impressive sculpture of a wounded lion carved into a sheer rock cliff.
  • Stroll across the Kapellbrücke, a covered wooden footbridge featuring a series of paintings dating back to the 17th century.

Trip up the Swiss Alps (extra cost)

Take an amazing trip to the top of a mountain in the Swiss Alps and soak in the incredible panoramic views. Why wait? Save money by booking this optional excursion before your trip departs.

Auf Wiedersehen, Freunde! Translation: Goodbye, friends. Before you head to the airport, make sure to take one more group photo and grab that final drink. But this isn’t goodbye because you can always get the gang back together for another trip soon. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, we have a couple ways to keep your vacation going.

Truly, an incredible trip. We were able to see so much more than listed for this trip. However, I believe that was because we had our amazing tour guide Ivana!

First solo trip at EF

It was my first Solo trip at EF Ultimate Break. I was very sceptical at first to go with strangers but it turned out to be one of my best trips ever. Our tour director, Ivana was amazing and the best one we could have ever asked for. She was very well prepared for every stay and destination for the free time we had. Spectacular Europe End Rome Tour

Spectacular Europe End Rome

I was initially skeptical -- too many bad reviews for tour operators these days -- but I was pleasantly surprised how good the trip turned out to be. As arranged, I had a pick up at Heathrow who dropped me to the hotel. Throughout the 14-day trip, hotel stay was nice and pleasant with free breakfasts. The hotels in Lyon and Zurich were especially good. Not all tour guides were fluent with English, but Fernando (London) and Thiery (Italy) and 'Disaster Phillipe' were great. Some of the outstanding trips were 1) cruise on Seine 2) train ride on Zurich metro 3) train ride down Grindelweld. On top, the many funicular rides and boat rides were well-planned and enjoyable.

Tour du Mont Blanc TMB Circuit

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed this trip. We stayed at small hotels, always having a private room and en suite bath. Issues along the way - matched with people in the same group who didn't take the training seriously; meals that were only fair and lack of diversification in picnic lunches; occasional front desk staff that acted uninterested or inconvenienced. Fortunately, this did not affect the beauty of the surroundings and the overall exhilaration felt with the accomplishment of each day. Although the tour operator did mention the importance of training, this should have been stressed more greatly. It should be made more clear that the actual route taken may not end up being the same route clhosen for the day.

We had an amazing hike. We would book No Roads Expeditions again. Such a great company and our group was amazing. Communication was great as well!
Eva and Rene were amazing tour guides. Disappointed that we didn't see the Eiffel Tower at night. Several times we were dropped in town at night with not enough time to get a meal before being taken to the hotel. Some hotels were out of town with nothing within walking distance. Thank you to Rene for arranging for a group of us to go to the Moulin Rouge.

Board your overnight flight to Zurich today.

Welcome to Switzerland! Transfer to your hotel in the Swiss Alps. Later, get to know your Tour Director and fellow travelers at tonight’s welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.

Set out into lakeside Lucerne (one of Switzerland’s most populated cities) for a guided sightseeing tour and enjoy a taste of Alpine life—complete with unbelievable views of Pilatus, Rigi, and other neighboring mountains.

  • View the Lion Monument, a tribute to the Swiss Guards who sacrificed their lives in Paris during the French Revolution.
  • Pass the hand-painted facades that line the cobbled streets of the Old Town—the traditional core of the city that dates back to medieval times.
  • Cross the famous Kapellbrücke, a covered wooden footbridge spanning the Reuss River, and view the Water Tower—a 13th-century work that’s one of the oldest structures in all of Lucerne.
  • See the Jesuit Church, the first large Baroque building of its kind to be built north of the Alps in Switzerland.

Enjoy a free afternoon in the Swiss Alps or add an excursion.

Mount Pilatus

From $135 per person

On your way to Munich, cross through Liechtenstein, a tiny Alpine principality that dates back to the Holy Roman Empire.

  • Visit the Liechtensteiner capital, Vaduz, and pass the royal family’s namesake castle. Perched atop a hill, Vaduz Castle has watched over the region since the 12th century, and serves as the royal residence to this day.
  • Enjoy free time in the town (and be sure to get your passport stamped!)

After, pass through the Bavarian Alps, making stops along the way.

  • Pause for photos of Neuschwanstein Castle’s unique mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine architecture, and marvel at the fairytale retreat of “Mad” King Ludwig II.
  • Revel in scenic views of the Alps as you relax and explore during free time, or grab lunch in Schwangau, the town below Neuschwanstein.

Then, continue on to Munich and sit down for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Today, embark on a guided tour of Munich and experience daily life like one of its nearly 1.5 million inhabitants. Founded in the 12th century and boasting traditional and cosmopolitan appeal, the capital of Bavaria is the third-largest city in all of Germany. It’s also home to the original Oktoberfest—a massive Volksfest that, to this day, remains the largest beer festival in the world.

  • Travel past the 18th-century Englischer Garten—one of the largest urban parks in the world—and the fashionable Schwabing district, formerly home to Munich’s bohemian residents.
  • Enter Nymphenburg Palace, the Baroque home to past Bavarian royalty.
  • Walk from Odeonsplatz—Munich’s large central square, named after an adjacent former concert hall—through the well-manicured grounds of the Hofgarten to view the Residenz, once home to the Wittelsbach dukes of Bavaria.
  • Explore Marienplatz, Munich’s medieval heart, and see the famed Glockenspiel clock before heading to the Frauenkirche—a Gothic cathedral and the seat of the local archdiocese.
  • Take some free time to explore the Viktualienmarkt, where you’ll find fresh food, flowers, and other delicacies.

  • Stroll through the city’s Old Town and explore a rich heritage tracing back to the first century B.C.
  • Admire the 2,000-year-old Roman arena; the Piazza delle Erbe, which functioned as the town’s forum during Roman times; and the Gothic villa (complete with a balcony) that inspired William Shakespeare’s timeless Romeo and Juliet .

Today, meet up with your local guide and explore the heart of Venice on foot and by vaporetto, or water taxi. • Step onto iconic St. Mark’s Square and view the St. Mark’s Basilica—an opulent, domed church built in the 11th century to house the body of St. Mark the Apostle.
  • View the stately Doge’s Palace, a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic style that was built in 1340 and served as both the residence of the Doge (the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice) and the seat of the Venetian government.

  • See a Murano glassblowing demonstration and learn about Venice’s most celebrated art form, whose roots in the city date back to the 10th century.

Then, enjoy a free afternoon in Venice or add an excursion.

  • Swiss food is varied and sophisticated, and some popular dishes include sausages, breaded veal fillets, freshwater fish, and cheese dishes such as fondue and raclette. Be sure to try Swiss chocolate, which is among the world’s finest.
  • German food is hearty and substantial. Among the specialties are dumpling stews, sauerkraut, sausages, smoked cheeses, and dark breads. Bavaria produces some of the world’s purest beers, and white German wines are exceptionally good.
  • Austria is known for its savory Wiener schnitzel and fresh wild trout, carp, and crayfish. Save room for dessert—especially the strudels of fruit and nuts and elegant chocolate cakes, such as the world-famous Sachertorte.
  • Northern Italy is known for flavorful meats and pastries.
  • For more authentic meals, try local trattorias, small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello.
  • All destinations visited on this tour operate on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C, E, or F plugs with two small, round pins. You may also use a Type J plug with three small pins in Switzerland and a Type L plug with three small pins in Italy.

  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.

  • All destinations visited on this tour are one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • You will use the Swiss franc in Switzerland and the euro in Germany, Italy, and Austria.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.

10 day europe itinerary: germany, italy, switzerland + austria.

Want to travel to Europe, but only have 10 days? With this itinerary, you will get to see 4 European countries in as little as 10 days! Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Austria are all very close together, making it super easy to see them all.

This was my first trip abroad without my family, so I opted in for a tour with EF College Break .  What was so nice about this tour was that it was all college students, so I made a ton of friends and we did things my age group would enjoy. On top of all that, it was extremely inexpensive for all that we got to see!

If you want to do a tour, I would definitely recommend looking into EF College Break. If you want to explore Europe on your own time, you can still do this itinerary by yourself.

For all the self-guided travelers out there… I have an epic (yes, EPIC) itinerary to France where you will get to see all the highlights. This itinerary is self-guided where you get to see Paris, the French Riviera, Provence, and go champagne tasting in Champagne! You can read my 10 day France itinerary here !

Okay, you ready to read this amazing 10 day Europe Itinerary?!

When to go to Europe?

This is a tricky question that will completely depend on the type of trip you want.

Want to see the alps covered in snow and eat fondue? Winter will be best!

Want to avoid crowds? Early spring and late fall will be best!

Want to enjoy prime weather and loads of events? Summer will be best!

I traveled to Europe in late May and it was absolutely beautiful . The crowds were minimal in comparison to the high seasons of June-August, and the weather was ranging from 60-80 degrees (depending on the country). The crowds in Europe hot-spots (especially Venice) will be unbearably crowded. Before you book during the prime summer months, just take that into consideration!

Tour v. No Tour?

I think it depends on your budget and if you are traveling with someone. I didn’t feel comfortable driving in Europe at 19 years old, so the only other way to see multiple countries would be to take trains or fly, which can add up quick!

I loved this tour group because it was all college age students, so I made friends from all over the world and we did a lot of excursions people my age group would do. Also, this tour company gave us SO much free time so even if the tour doesn’t see everything you want, you still have the time to see it.

EF College Break Tour to Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany

Typically, I prefer to do self-guided travels because I can wake up as early as I want to see sights, mix and match what I want to see, eat when I want, etc. Of course there will be more stress planning your own trip abroad, but I think the benefit outweighs the cost!

What to Pack for Summer in Europe?

I keep a list of all my summer essentials and favorite finds on this guide here . I am constantly updated it after every warm destination – tried, true & tested! Also, I have a list of my 10 travel essentials I can’t live without, you can read those here !

As for specific things to pack for Europe, these are my top 3 must-have’s:

1. Travel Adapter

Yes, I know this is a very generic thing for a trip abroad, but this one is AMAZING. It is an all-in-one adapter that works on every country you will ever travel to. This is especially important with this itinerary because Switzerland doesn’t use the same plug as the rest of Europe! Click here for one that includes all of the USA, Europe, Australia and UK!

2. Curling Iron with dual voltage

True story… I was so confused about adapters and converters that I decided to just not buy a converter lol. When I turned on my blow dryer in this little hotel in Switzerland, I shut down the ENTIRE hotel because it burnt the circuits!! If you don’t want to worry about a confusing converter, I would just buy a dual voltage curling iron / blow dryer.  This will come in handy on any trip you will ever do! Click here for a dual voltage curling iron.

3. Packing Cubes

Guys, this is so important when you are bouncing around between multiple hotels. Packing cubes saved my LIFE when I did my 10 day France trip because I stayed in three different hotels. Here’s a free tip: Pack the clothes you want to wear in each city (AKA hotel), so that way you only need to take out that cube at that hotel. Most hotels in Europe are super tiny, so saving you room will be a total life saver! PLUS, when you are done wearing those dirty clothes, you can stick them back in the packing cube so they don’t touch your clean clothes! Click here for packing cubes!

BONUS: Anytime I travel to abroad, I always get travel insuranc e so I am covered during my trip. Europe is known for reckless driving and lots of protests, so you want to make sure you have insurance in case of an emergency. Confused on what travel insurance is? I have a lengthy guide that will explain it in great detail !

Itinerary Overview

Day 1: overnight flight.

  • Day 2: Munich Sight Seeing

Day 3: Neuschwanstein Castle

  • Day 4: Drive to Venice + Lunch in Austria
  • Day 5: Explore Venice
  • Day 6: Drive to Swizerland + lunch in Verona
  • Day 7: Explore Switzerland + Mt. Pilatus

Day 8: Drive to Frankfurt

  • Day 9: Explore Frankfurt
  • Day 10: Fly home! 🙁

10 Day Europe Itinerary

Hopefully your flight won’t be as long as mine, but usually the entire first day is wasted traveling due to the time change + flight length.

Not being able to sleep on planes makes it feel extra long too. Is anyone else as dorky as me and get too excited to sleep before a vacation?

TIP: Bring Melatonin on your flight to help you sleep! It’s an all-natural vitamin that doesn’t make you feel groggy when you wake up. This also will help you sleep the first few nights you arrive.

Day 2: Arrive in Munich

We arrived at 7am in the morning.. yes. 7am. It was a rough first day because the time zone difference from Las Vegas was a whopping NINE HOURS . The entire day will be spent keeping yourself as busy as possible to fight that jet lag!

Spend your free day in Munich seeing street performers, watching surfing competitions at The Eisbachwelle , strolling through the cities English Garden, and enjoy lunch and German beer at the Hofbrauhaus !

As you can imagine, the Hofbrauhaus is extremely touristy and always busy! It is a HUGE restaurant, but you still might need to wait to be seated. If you do, just spend some time exploring the nearby shops to start your souvenir shopping early 🙂

IMG_7029

End your first day in Germany with a Biergarten dinner at Zum Flaucher . There are SO many beirgartens in Germany that have outdoor seating, twinkly lights, picnic style seating and a relaxed atmosphere. Going to these for dinner was one of my favorite memories in Germany, so I would definitely make it a priority to go to one of them!

By far my favorite day out of the entire trip! This castle is unbelievably breathtaking. The Neuschwanstein ( say that ten times fast ) Castle is located less than 2 hours from Munich in a town called Hohenschwangau ( now say that 20 times fast ). You can either drive if you have a rental car, or there is a train that will take you from Munich to the castle in 2.5 hours. Click here to look at train times and prices! Or if navigating the trains terrifies you, you can sign up for a day trip with a tour company, click here for tour options .

Everything about Hohenschwangau just screams Disneyland. The adorable German Cottages (that people actually live in, oh my gosh!),  glistening blue lake, horse and carriage rides, and a real life sleeping beauty castle nestled up on the mountain. Look at the view of the town from above:

IMG_7046

Seriously though, this castle is the real life inspiration of the Disney movie, Sleeping Beauty. When you either walk or take your horse carriage ride to the top, you can take a tour of the castle and walk along the bridge to the castle viewpoint. From the viewpoint you are hanging on a bridge over a river that looks right at the castle and valley behind it. I have no words to explain how beautiful this place was.

neuschwanstein castle in Germany

Like this photo? Edit like me using my one-click Lightroom Presets !

After your castle tour , rent a paddle boat and enjoy the rest of the day on the lake! You can rent these for fairly inexpensive on the lake, no reservation needed. If you’re going with your significant other, grab picnic items from a local store and have lunch on your private boat. Or if you don’t have a significant other, a bff date will do just fine!

If you are planning a day trip from Munich like my tour did and more info, be sure to check out my friends guide on How to Visit Neuschwanstein Castle from Munich!

IMG_7042

If you’re not too jet-lagged, end your night going out to German clubs – which if your from Las Vegas like me, will find hilarious! They’re all like little disco bars where everyone is dancing the night away to old American music. Here are the tops clubs in Munich:

  • Harry Klein

I wish I could have spent more days in Germany because I was blown away by how beautiful it was! I loved the culture, food, greenery, and the amount of hidden gems! If you want to extend your Germany stay, I would recommend checking out this guide: Things to do in Cologne Germany!

Day 4: Drive to Venice

There’s no sugar-coating that the drive from Munich to Venice is long and brutal. But, the scenery is out of this world and will make the 6 hour drive go by a lot faster! If you are not driving, there are direct trains that will take you from Munich to Venice at around 7 hours. Click here to search for train times!

If you are driving to Venice, that perfect pit-stop is Salzburg, Austria. You can see this colorful town filled with cobblestone streets, that is located along a river in the middle of the Austrian Alps! There are endless restaurants to choose from, so I would recommend walking around until you find somewhere that looks welcoming 🙂

IMG_7043

We stayed in a small beach town outside of the actual island of Venice. I would highly recommend this because you get away from the touristy side of Venice to experience local restaurants and beaches. Doing this will make you feel like you are staying in an authentic Italian town with few tourists!

End your night indulging in pasta and pizza from the smallest hole in the wall you can find! And don’t forget about Italian gelato on the beach for dessert, because you’re in Italy! You’ve GOT TO have gelato everyday!

Pasta in Venice, Italy

Day 5: Venice

The city that’s on everyone’s bucket list, Venice! I’ve dreamed about riding a gondola down the grand canal since, well, forever. Once you take the brief ferry ride to Venice island, you’ll take a tour of Saint Mark’s Basilica and the Murano Glass Museum before getting lost in the winding streets and canals of the city.

If you want to see more during your time in Venice, here are some recommendations:

  • Sign up for a food tour
  • See the colorful streets of Burano
  • Take a private gondola ride through the smaller canals
  • Have lunch on the Grand Canal at De Pesis!
  • Take a day trip to Prosecco Hills for wine tasting

I spent the day just wandering the streets of Venice with no plan and it was amazing! I carelessly roamed the streets, ate WAY too much food, took a gondola ride (or two), got gelato from every shop I saw, & got too many souvenirs!

TIP: Dress appropriately for the churches or else you’ll be forced to buy paper ponchos and skirts to wear inside. You need to cover your shoulders and wear and appropriate length bottom to enter.

riding on a gondola in Venice, Italy

Day 6: Drive to Switzerland

Another long drive, but it doesn’t count as a drive when you are winding through the Swiss Alps. The drive from Venice to Lucerne is a little over 5 hours and the train is roughly 6.5 hours.

Swiss Alps

The good thing about driving is there are so many towns you can stop in to break up the drive and see more sights! I would recommend stopping in either Verona or Milan (or both!) before heading to Switzerland.

Verona is a small, quaint town that is home to Romeo & Juliette’s famous balcony! While you are there, stop at a farmers market or grab some street food to enjoy under their balcony.

Romeo and Juliette's Balcony in Verona, Italy

From Verona to Lucerne, it will be about 4 1/2 hours of pure beauty! You will wind up the mountains passing through tunnels carved into mountains. After every tunnel pass, the scenery will be completely different and even more beautiful.

Check into your hotel and head into town for some dinner. We spent an actual hour hunting down fondue for dinner, apparently fondue isn’t a thing in the summer!? People were making fun of us but who cares! WERE TOURISTS AND WERE PROUD! We eventually found a fondue spot and it was amazing to say the least.

Fondue in Lucerne, Switzerland

Day 7: Switzerland

Today you’ll be getting a little bit of everything. From adventure to beautiful scenery! Take the ferry over lake Lucerne to the gondola entrance for Mt. Pilatus . You’ll take the gondola up 7,000 ft (2132 meters) to get expansive views of the Swiss alps and Lake Lucerne.

Switzerland Gondola to Mt Pilatus

I know the weather is unpredictable, but really try to do this on a clear day so you can get unobstructed views from the top! Once you are up there, there will be walking and hiking trails, a souvenir shop and food stands for you to grab a bight to eat.

On the way down comes the fun part… the steepest railroad in the world has a seat with your name on it. I promise it doesn’t go too fast and doesn’t feel too old. You can also take the gondola down if the train terrifies you, but traveling is all about pushing you out of your comfort zone 🙂

Switzerland Gondola to Mt Pilatus

TIP: Don’t wear sandals to Mt. Pilatus because at the halfway point, there’s a type of “adventure park” with an alpine slide down the mountain, zip line and rope park. They are very strict at the zip line/rope park and will not let you on if you don’t have closed toe shoes!

Spend the afternoon hunting down some Swiss Chocolate for your loved ones back home, which is also very hard to find. I learned that everything I thought was stereotypical to Switzerland was just that, a stereotype.

Another day of driving and today’s pit stop will be the charming German village, Heidelberg. Are you all castled-out yet? Of course not! You’ll get to visit another older castle that is home to the world’s largest wine barrel!

The drive & train from Lucerne to Frankfurt is around 4 hours, but if you make a pit stop in Heidelberg for lunch, you will drive 3 hours and then 1 hour!

Castle in Heidelberg, Germany

Once you arrive in Frankfurt you’ll soon see that it is a BIG city with lots of nightlife! Spend your night going out the local bars and enjoy one of your last nights in Europe.

Day 9: Frankfurt

We had a free day before our farewell dinner home, so some fun things to do in Frankfurt would be the Museumsufer (a cluster of 12 museums), Frankfurt Cathedral , Romerburg (a square with medieval homes), Palmengarten , and getting some last minute souvenirs!

Romerburg Square, Frankfurt

Day 10: Fly Home

I can never sleep on planes mostly because I’m always too excited for the destination. I slept the entire 12 hour flight home, so that’s saying something about how “excited” I was to be going home!

Until next time Europe!

Before you go…. Want some more guides on Europe? I think you will love these!

  • You can use your bank card to pay almost anywhere in Europe.
  • If you need some local cash, it is best to use an ATM. This is true for all European countries, except for Hungary. When you withdraw cash from an ATM, the currency conversion will be done automatically by your bank, and the exchange rate will usually be much better than if you exchange currency at a local bank.

In the morning we make our way to the end of the valley and our trailhead at the pilgrimage chapel of Notre Dame de la Gorge—a church of unique Baroque architecture. From the church we walk along an old Roman road that climbs steadily through a beautiful forest, broad alpine pastures, and passes rustic chalets as we make our way to the Col du Bonhomme (7,600'), our first pass. After lunch at the Col du Bonhomme, a short, gradual uphill traverse takes us across Col de la Croix-du-Bonhomme (8,200'), with superb vistas overlooking the Tarantaise region.

After a brief rest, we have a long and sometimes steep descent through rich, open pastures to the remote summer village of Les Chapieux (5,200'). A brief twenty-minute transfer will take us to our truly authentic Savoie hotel for tonight's stay. This evening, we enjoy a fine regional dinner at a charming, local restaurant.

Note: Today is one of the longest and most strenuous days on the Tour du Mont Blanc, as we cross two mountain passes, the Col du Bonhomme (7,600'), and the Col de la Croix-du-Bonhomme (8,200').

Hotel L’Autantic

Hotel L’Autantic Bourg Saint Maurice, France

A beautiful stone lodge located in the small mountain resort town of Bourg St. Maurice. Located in a tranquil setting with a beautiful courtyard and garden, L’Autantic is a short walk from town, offering mountain views, pool and sauna, and authentic Savoie style and hospitality. A bountiful breakfast is served in the welcoming veranda, overlooking the eastern side of the Mont Blanc massif.

Bourg St. Maurice to Courmayeur

  • Activity Level: Moderate to strenuous; elevation gain of 1,600’ gain and loss of 3,600’
  • Activity Length: 4-5 hours (approximately 8.5 miles)

We begin our day with a short transfer to the end of the Vallée des Glaciers. Leaving France, we hike into the Aosta region of Italy via grassy trails and ancient passages.

We climb eastward and enjoy a relatively easy hike over the Col de la Seigne (8,245').  The views are dramatic from the pass, encompassing the Aiguille Noire and the Italian face of Mont Blanc that dominates the Val Veni.

An easy descent brings us farther into Italy, and from the very first mountain refuge we pass, the cultural difference between France and Italy is striking. At the end of our day of hiking, we transfer to Courmayeur where we spend the remainder of the day exploring this resort town spectacularly settled beneath the Grand Jorasses and the Brenva Glacier. You are free to enjoy dinner this evening at one of Courmayeur's many fine restaurants.

Hotel Berthod

Hotel Berthod Courmayeur, Italy

Hotel Berthod is a converted old country house in an ideal location in the center of lively Courmayeur, the "Italian Chamonix". The Berthod family who has operated the hotel for many years, embraces all guests with a gracious welcome and service. Balconies offer impressive views of Mont Blanc, and many shops and cafes are just a few steps away to immerse yourself in Italian culture for the evening.

Mont de la Saxe to Refugios

  • Activity Level: Moderate to strenuous with about 1000’ elevation gain and up to 3000’ loss with several options
  • Activity Length: 4-6 hours (6-10 miles)

Today, we experience the Tour du Mont Blanc route above Courmayeur overlooking the Val Ferret. We enjoy the stunning landscape of the massif from the Italian side, which is more dramatic and rugged than the French side. The peaks are closer allowing great views of the Dent du Géant, Grandes Jorasses, and others.

We take a local bus up the valley to start our hike along the ridge of Mont de la Saxe, where we have panoramic views along the way to Refugio Bonatti. We parallel the full mountain range and its steep and impressive south faces. After a lunch break, we continue our hike along the footsteps of the famous Ultra Trail of Mont Blanc and to Refuge Bertone before descending back to the valley to return to Courmayeur for some time to explore this charming town.

You may also choose to relax at our hotel's new spa before dinner on your own: soak in the hot tub or warm your muscles in the steam room or sauna.

Courmayeur–Champex

  • Activity Level: Moderate to strenuous with 2,450’ elevation gain and 2,750’ loss
  • Activity Length: 5-6 hours (about 9 miles)

After a short transfer from Courmayeur, we hike from Italy into the mountain wonderland of Switzerland via the Grand Col Ferret (8,400'), and pass beneath the massive granite peaks of Mont Dolent, the Dent du Geant, and the Grandes Jorasses. We hike through alpine meadows and past fast-flowing mountain streams on our moderate but spectacular climb towards the pass, enjoying amazing views of the icy southern flanks of the Mont Blanc massif.

The Grand Col Ferret has been in use for several centuries and serves as the Italian-Swiss border between Val D'Aosta and the canton of Valais. The landscape in the Swiss Val Ferret is gentler, with enticing streams and woodlands, and an extraordinary abundance of wildflowers.

Our arrival in Switzerland is greeted by the sound of Swiss cow bells, and rustic chalets with geraniums spilling from window boxes. We descend to the village of Ferret, and transfer to the mountain-ringed lake resort of Champex. There is time to relax before dinner at our comfortable hotel.

Hotel du Glacier

Hotel du Glacier Champex, Switzerland

Hotel du Glacier is a family-run hotel ideally situated on Lake Champex, reflecting views of the surrounding mountains. Swiss flags and cows with ringing bells in the surrounding area will welcome you in Switzerland. The hotel offers a billiards lounge and opportunity to relax in the or hot tub after a full day’s hike. Experience the local culture in the small village, a short walk away, before savouring a regional Swiss dinner.

Trient to Le Tour

  • Activity Level: Moderate to challenging; elevation gain of 3,050’ and loss of 3,000’
  • Activity Length: 5-6 hours (approximately 9 miles)

Today, we complete the Tour du Mont Blanc circuit on one of its most beautiful stages. After a transfer to the village of Trient at the base of a spectacular glacier, we hike through high pastures and back into France over the Col du Balme (7,230'), with glorious views of Mont Blanc and the Chamonix Valley below. We have lunch at the pass, enjoying the sweeping views over the massif we've circumnavigated, and then descend by foot or gondola to the village of Le Tour, from which we head back to Chamonix. We gather to celebrate our accomplishments tonight with a farewell dinner at one of the best restaurants in Chamonix.

Departure from Chamonix

Our trip ends after breakfast, and you are free to continue your exploration of Chamonix, or depart for your next destination.

Please note that this is a typical itinerary, and actual activities may vary due to weather conditions, local events, and to allow serendipity to play a hand in your experience. Accommodations are as outlined in the itinerary, although we reserve the right to change these or the order visited should the need arise.

What To Expect

Physical activity.

Boundless Journeys' trips are designed for energetic and flexible individuals who like to be active and have a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude. As one of our most challenging tours, Tour du Mont Blanc Hiking is rated 4, strenuous, on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the most strenuous). As this classic route completely encircles the Mont Blanc massif, we trek full days through spectacular mountainous terrain, "inn-to-inn" every day (except for our first hike on Day 2). Each rewarding day includes long elevation gains and losses ranging from 1,700 to 4,400 feet; hiking duration ranging from five to eight hours, and mileage ranging from seven to twelve miles. Most hiking is at altitudes between 5,000 and 8,000 feet, and the maximum elevation reached is 8,800 feet.

Although our luggage is transported each day, the hikes have no vehicle access (other than the start and finish), with no shorter options. All trip members should be in strong physical condition and have good hiking experience. No technical climbing experience is necessary. (Limited passenger seats are available in the luggage vehicle in the event a transfer is needed.) We encourage you to call our office for further information to help determine if this trip is right for you.

Trail conditions vary greatly, including a mix of wide dirt paths, hiking trails with rocks and roots, rough, large rocky steps, loose scree, and shallow stream crossings. Uneven terrain underfoot requires agility and stable footing. We request that you bring hiking boots with full ankle support and two trekking poles, which help provide comfort, stability, and most importantly, enjoyment. Our hikes take us through farmland, forest, rocky glacial terrain, and over mountain passes. Each hike includes sustained climbing and descending, sometimes steeply. The route does not travel through exposed sections with drop-offs, but does include limited sections of trail traversing steep hillsides, which may pose an issue for those with vertigo or a fear of heights. Feel free to call our office for further details.

Meeting Point

Chamonix, France

Departure Point

Traveling to and from.

Most Convenient Airport: Geneva International Airport; Geneva, Switzerland (airport code GVA)

Meeting Time and Place: Your guide(s) will meet you in the evening on the first day of the trip, in the lobby of our hotel in Chamonix.

Departure Time and Place: Chamonix, France, after breakfast on the last day of the trip. Please note that transfers to the Geneva International Airport take approximately 1.5 hours. Please plan your flight schedule accordingly.

In an alpine environment, weather is variable throughout the day and by elevation. A warm, sunny day in the valley can be anywhere from delightfully refreshing to downright brisk at higher elevations. Therefore, dressing in layers will be essential to your comfort throughout the day. Rain and snow are possible at any time, and weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, so having rain gear and thermal layers on hand is advisable. At the same time, the sun is strong at higher elevations, and therefore adequate precautions should be taken to prevent sunburn, even on cool days.

You may obtain more detailed weather information by visiting www.weatherbase.com.

Savoyard cuisine is centered around the incredible bounty of fresh foods available in the Alpine valleys of the region. You'll enjoy plenty of local cheeses and wines and most menus will feature soups, pasta, fish, meat, and salads. Breakfasts, lunches, and all but two dinners are included; your guide can make recommendations for wonderful local restaurants for those two evenings. Breakfasts include fresh fruit, sliced meats and cheese, yogurt, cereal, and pastries. Picnic lunches usually include fresh fruits and vegetables, cured meats, fresh bread, 2 or 3 local cheeses, and cookies or chocolate for dessert. Most dinners are at our hotels and consist of a good variety of Savoyard choices. Vegetarians can be accommodated with advance notice, though choices tend to be more limited.

A Note on Accommodations

The hotels we stay in are rustic, well-located for hikers, and busy in the summer season. Please note that these are hikers' hotels, not five-star resorts. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but are not always of uniform size, and amenities can vary. Although offering excellent service, the Hotel La Grande Ourse offers shared dormitory-style bathrooms (no private baths) and limited single rooms. Those who reserve a single room may be matched with another guest (of the same gender).

Switzerland flag

  • "I didn't have to plan the details (i.e., transportation, hotels). Since planning/managing is what I do for a living, it was great to have someone else cover everything. The trip was seamless." - Amy H.
  • "I loved my trek! Oh let me count the ways! 1. The scenery - jaw dropping, awe inspiring, words cannot describe the scenery. 2. It was challenging, but not too hard. 3. You mostly climbed up in the mornings and descended or had it easier most afternoons. 4. The camaraderie with the other hikers doing the TMB." - Donna B.
  • "The narrative description was a constant source of amusement since it was so well-written with a whimsical and playful tone, yet very very accurate and helpful. We were surprised with how often we referred back to the narrative versus the map. Whoever wrote it gets five stars! And a bonus!!! You seemed the most organized, well-represented online, fair in your pricing, professional. Brittany was exceptional and winning in her confidence and non-salesy tone on the phone. I sensed we would get exactly what we paid for with you all." - Ken G.
  • "My wife and I really enjoy hiking and have been doing Ryder Walker (RW) treks for over a decade now and chose this RW trek to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary. As such, RW probably gave us some upgrades, but the accommodations were some of the best we have ever experienced anywhere, let alone a "hiking vacation." If there was a best room in the house or you should be on this side to get the best of this-or-that, RW had you there. " - Bill Y.
  • "Oh Wow!! I pretty much loved everything! First, and most importantly, Dave and Eileen (guides) were AMAZING!!! Cheerful, generous, knowledgeable, helpful, wise, fun, fun and FUN!!!" - Darcy P.
  • "The scenery and walking were amazing. We loved walking through three different countries. Every stop along the way was beautiful--whether a picnic or a stop at a refuge for cafe or lunch--it was more lovely than could be imagined. The trails surrounded by flowers and the views of the mountains were stunning. We loved meeting people on the trails and greeting them. It was a good challenge in terms of walking, and the views, the scenery were simply spectacular." - Ann Marie Lipinsky
  • "I, personally, love the group experience and it was terrific having young people in the group, as they added such great energy and were so much fun to be with. I so enjoyed conversations with them on the trails. I love the way in which Kenny, who's so comfortable speaking three languages, so easily mingles with locals, wherever we were. It made the experience so much more culturally rewarding. I ended this trip on such a high that I promised myself that I would make sure that someday my children and grandchildren might also have this experience!" - Ann Fay Lawton
  • "This tour was my first guided tour and the highlight in my hiking career! Willi Glanznig, the best guide and a wonderful person, made everything to make this tour perfect. We had great hikes, a lot of fun, the perfect weather and last but not least, Willi and I could speak in our own dialect, which helped me a lot! It was interesting to see different places, atmospheres, accommodations and good food in such a short time. Every place had its own charm and very friendly people. Thank you for such a nice experience." - Doris Kahry
  • "The hiking was challenging, the food incredible, and the accommodations top-notch (even the hut night)! We feel really good about and totally satisfied with another fine Ryder-Walker experience and those wonderful memories will last forever! We’re already trying to figure out our next Ryder-Walker Adventure." - Bill Yeast and Elizabeth Dinsel
  • "I can’t think of how this tour could be improved on. Every aspect was near perfect for us thanks to your logistics team and guides." - Morgan S.

Amsterdam is comprised walkways lining canals, charming historic facades, and museums housing unique Dutch artists from past to present. You arrive at the airport where your private transfer is waiting to take you to your centrally located hotel. The Canal Ring surrounds the city center and is a collection of neighborhoods constructed in the 17th century. Grand townhouses overlook three encircling waterways. Small boats wade in the soft current of the canals.

The aroma of French fries wafts along the cobbled paths emanating from famous stands known for their eclectic array of sauces. You can see the rich details of the past come to life on the façade of the Museum Willet-Holthuysen. The museum is a fully furnished canal-side patrician house preserving the furniture, silverware, plates, and books from the Dutch Renaissance. Jacob de Wit designed a specific wall using only shades of gray, depicting cherubic joy with 3D like illusion. The beauty of the city and its wealth of history welcomes you as your first stop in Europe.

What's Included:

Collecting Antiquity

Morning rises over the canals, and the light glistens on the water. The roaming sounds of the city intertwine with the spinning wheels of bicycles rolling alongside the water. After breakfast, your guide meets you in the hotel lobby to take you through the city like a local.

You arrive at the Royal Palace was constructed in the 17th century and was originally established as the town hall. Polished marble paves the central hall. Lofted ceilings tower above the images of maps etched into the room’s floor underneath classic chandeliers. At the far end of the room, an Atlas stands above the portico holding the world on his shoulders. The grandeur of the interior emanates Amsterdam’s and the Netherlands’ opulent past at one point reaching every corner of the known world.

Images from the River

The city rolls by you in the morning sweeping across the lanes next to the canal designated for bicycles. The aroma of sweet pastries drifts over the cobbled bridges that connect the inner boulevards and islands across the canals. Your guide meets you at the hotel and escorts you through the flatlands of Holland until the lush landscape begins to roll across the horizon. In Germany, you board a river cruise to explore the verdant landscape surrounding the Rhine River. Storybook castles decorate crested cliffs.

Vineyards wrap over terraced hills offering an earthen aroma to the fragrant evergreen trees. Towns were constructed using the surrounding timber, sporting large sloping roofs and resembling villages illustrated in fairytales and Disney movies. Eltz Castle rises above the encompassing emerald forest and was constructed in the 12th century. It stands 1,050 feet above sea level with elegant spires and fantastical architecture.

Glimpse of Tradition

The charming timber-carved homes and traditional villages of the forests become more vibrant in the Black Forest. The lush canopy blocks out the sky and creates a dark stretch of connecting branches giving the forest its namesake. Your guide explains that the forest is where many of the Brothers Grimm’s stories took place. Round mountain summits enclose the forest.

In the town of Karlsruhe, you find 18th-century architecture with a palace at its core. People stroll through blossoming parks, and French impressionist paintings decorate the local museums. The farther you reach outside of the city center, the more homes maintain an art nouveau façade. Rhine Falls trundles near the border of Switzerland with the water descending 75 feet down the hillside into rushing whitewater. The culture emblematic of the forest and the beauty of the natural landscape makes for an unforgettable majesty around en route to Lucerne, Switzerland.

Regal Memento

Wake up in Lucerne to find the glacial lake glinting in the warm sunlight. The stunning summit of Mount Pilatus stands 6,982 feet above sea level. A local train travels up the slope on the steepest tracks in the world. The alpine air is crisp and cool. The aroma of decadent coffee blends with the faint scent of wafting dark chocolate.

Your guide takes you through Old Town, the historic neighborhood of the culturally rich city, brimming with traditional Swiss timber buildings. The Lion Monument stands in a former sandstone quarry, carved into the cliff face 33 feet wide and nearly 20 feet tall. You can see the anguish on the lion’s face as a spear sticks out of its shoulder. A translucent pond reflects the image of the mournful lion. The monument was erected in the 19th century and commemorates the Swiss soldiers taken during the French Revolution while protecting King Louis XVI.

Taking in the Pass and Passed

When you wake up in Innsbruck, you can see the encircling rugged mountaintops encroaching the cobbled streets of the city center. The aroma of fresh strudel lingers in the air. You leave the alpine city behind and make your way through the lush and altitudinal roadway of Brenner Pass, crossing the Alps into Italy at an altitude of 4,495 feet above sea level. The pine trees climb up and down the mountainsides opening up into fertile valley grass. The trees open and you arrive at the Grand Canal in Venice where you board a private boat to St. Mark’s Square. The city is vibrant with locals and visitors alike. Speedboats pass through the canal and gondolas course down the smaller waterways carving the city into meandering islands connected by stone bridges.

In St. Mark’s Square your guide shows you the opulence of St. Mark’s Cathedral displaying magnificent Byzantine domes standing 141 feet tall. Gilded frescoes decorate the underside of the archways with exquisite representations of biblical lore. The interior maintains the faint aroma of myrrh held in the dramatic frescoes decorating the domes covering 86,111 square feet of space. You follow your guide through opulent history, preserved through time and the remarkable appeal of the religious works glistening in the candlelight.

Indulging in the Scenery

The waters of the canals lap at the edge of the city. The bell tower overlooking St. Mark’s Square can be seen from the walkway outside your hotel, a symbol of nobility and grace. Soon you wave goodbye to the gondolas and arching bridges, winding through the pine and evergreen forests en route to Rome. The Italian countryside surrounds you with emerald leaves and rolling hills. In the region of Emilia-Romagna, you stop in the city of Bologna for a look into the unique culture of a culinary city.

Medieval colonnades line historic Old Town offsetting the chic modern neighborhoods of the hi-tech city. The university was established in 1088 and remains the world’s oldest. Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio housed the city university from the 16th to the 19th century. Today it maintains the library collection with over 700,000 volumes including the anatomy guides of the 17th century Teatro Anatomico. The circular room has Cedar-wood seats tiered around the central marble tabletop situated underneath a sculpture of Apollo, maintaining the rooms original integrity as a learning center.

Amassing the Ancients

Rome is a remarkable city that spans millennia. Cobbled streets turn into narrow alleyways opening up into charming piazzas. Historic fountains once acted as public water sources for the surrounding community. The country’s oldest farmers market continues every morning in Campo de’ Fiori filling the square with bright produce and the refreshing aroma of fresh cut flowers. The Colosseum stands at the edges of Via dei Fiori Imperiali. The elliptical structure was erected in inaugurated in 80 AD and could seat up to 50,000 spectators.

You walk through the famous multi-tiered archways and down the stone halls. The sun casts a warm light over the city. The stone shines a rustic color from age and ruggedness. Three levels of arches create the outer walls and cast a shade over the intricate complex at the center of the arena that once stood underneath the stage holding animals and gladiators waiting to fight. The size of the arena continues to inspire visitors along with the perseverant power of the construction.

Day  11 - 12

Treasuring Enlightenment

The images of Europe are compounding into a definitive collage of tradition, culture, beauty, and stunning history. Rome awakens in the morning life with the light of the city spreading over the Tiber River. Vespas wind through the city and the Trevi Fountain trickles with water around the fabulous carved images of classical gods and mythology. You leave the city and venture north to the famous hills of Tuscany, arriving in the Renaissance city of Florence. The old city walls continue to surround parts of the antique center. Cobblestones line the streets and the piazzas underneath the bordering buildings and towering churches.

The scent of sweet waffles and gelato spills out of local gelaterias. Construction of the Santa Croce Basilica began in the 13th century. The neo-Gothic marble façade illuminates the delicate colors entwined with the natural shade of the stone. Michelangelo designed a doorway near the transept chapels leading to a 14th century room decorated with a fresco of the crucifixion painted by Taddeo Gaddi. The galleries maintain a gospel aroma, combining the polished interior with the scent of frankincense in the church’s subtle glow.

Encompassing panoramas

In the morning, you leave behind the quick current of the Arno River and visit the unforgettable marble wonders in Pisa’s Piazza dei Miracoli before venturing over the French border and into the rocky village town of Éze. The medieval town crowns the French Riviera with sporadic stone houses and meandering pathways overlooking the azure Mediterranean Sea. Castle ruins stand overlooking the village, butting against the Jardin Exotique d’Éze. The botanical gardens open to a view from descending over 1,320 feet into the water. When the breeze blows you find hints of the salty aroma rushing from along the sea. The view is unlike any you have ever experienced. The medieval town has red-shingled roofs, a mixture of lush trees, rising cactuses, and the expanse of iridescent water extending to the horizon

Taken with Paint

Wake up to the sensational view of the French Riviera at Nice. The historic Old Town stretches near the Promenade des Anglais. The cobbled streets wind underneath colorful umbrellas casting shade over café tables and chairs. The aroma of decadent hot chocolate and freshly brewed coffee spills into the lanes. You make your way to St. Paul de Vence for the day to find a once peaceful medieval town enlivened by the artistic representations of Picasso and Chagall. Art galleries line the beautifully preserved main road and intertwining small lanes.

The town stands on a hillside, encircled by fragrant trees with a view out to the Mediterranean. The Chapel of Pénitents Blanc was erected in the 17th century and refurbished by celebrated Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon in the 21st century. Eight oil paintings dress the interior walls in pastels. Stained glass windows add to the brightly pigmented walls creating a larger framework for the message of generosity. The chapel celebrates the town’s vast history but also represents an open mind for the future.

Assortment of Celebration

The salty sweet scent of the Mediterranean drifts over the streets of the antique city and blends with the rich aroma of hot chocolate. The azure coastline brushes against the pink hues of the buildings climbing into the hillside. In the morning, you make your way to the train station to board a comfortable train to the unparalleled city of Paris. The city symbolizes romance and artistry, beauty and indulgence, reminding visitors and locals alike to take their time and enjoy each moment. Trees shade wide boulevards, and the pearl façade of the Sacre Coeur stands atop the vibrant neighborhood of Montmartre topping Paris like a crown. The afternoon is yours to enjoy the city at your leisure, opening up the wonders across the reaches of historic museums and celebrated monuments.

The cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris was constructed in the 19th century on the Île de la Cité in the fourth arrondissement. The French Gothic architecture is rich with rose windows and elaborate gargoyles the twin towers flanking the entrance stand 226 feet tall. Once inside you can see the gigantic organ pipes lit by the marvelous colors of the rose window in the background. The organ contains 7,374 pipes and when played can echo through the vaulted ceilings with ethereal charm. Arched colonnades frame the main hall, and you can feel the pulse of the city around you.

Monumental Images of the City

Wake up to Paris and find the scent of buttery croissants as enticing as the frothy richness of a fresh brewed cappuccino. Your guide meets you at the hotel to you lead you to the treasures of the almost fabled city. Locals sit at cafes lining the sidewalk, reading the newspaper, sipping their coffee, and watching people pass by. Couples stroll alongside the Seine River and watch the riverboats drift down with the current. Your guide takes you to the marvelous open space of the Champs de Mars next to the Eiffel Tower.

The greener once housed the World’s Fair, and the Eiffel Tower stood as the entry gate welcoming everyone that ventured to the world spectacle. The tower stands 986 feet tall, erected in 1889. The steel frame intertwines creating an interesting image of webbing rising into an archway and continuing to the top of the tower. You take in the iconic image of the city and watch as locals and visitors alike sit in the soft grass of the Champs de Mars. You may want to join them as they snack on locally bought cheese, sip on wine, and indulge in the simple pleasures of the day.

A Complete Album

In the evening, Paris sparkles under the light of its own creation. In the morning, the sun bathes the city in natural light spotlighting the pearl and gray walls of 19th century buildings. You wake up intent on enjoying the morning like a Parisian, taking delight in the flavors of a buttery, sweet pastry accompanied with raspberry jam. Sip a freshly brewed coffee containing a hint of lingering chocolate. You can see the Seine from your seat and watch students sit near the water reading textbooks or romance novels listening to the gentle lapping of the water. Soon your private transfer will meet you at the hotel to escort you to the airport but for now you can sit back, relax, and enjoy a perfect Parisian moment.
