Palawan Puerto Princesa Bay Cruise & Iwahig River Firefly Watching Tour with Dinner & Transfers

Palawan Puerto Princesa Bay Cruise & Iwahig River Firefly Watching Tour with Dinner & Transfers

Description

Watch fireflies dance above the idyllic Iwahig River in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, through this tour. This experience is perfect for those looking for a leisurely night out immersed in the city's diverse landscape. The river cruise also comes with the service of a guide, a set dinner, a visit to the Puerto Princesa Baywalk Park, and hotel pick-up and drop-off within the city proper. For a more memorable experience, you may also upgrade your tour to a private one.

Your guide will fetch you from your accommodation at 5:30 PM so you can arrive at the port before the sun completely sets. When you get to the port, you and your guide will get in a small row boat operated by a local boatman. You will then start slowly sailing across the water as the sun sets, casting the area in warm orange hues before eventually transitioning into evening. When the sun finally dips behind the horizon, keep your eyes peeled as you sail between the mangroves that line the river.

Remember to turn off your camera's flash beforehand to avoid scaring away the fireflies. Listen to your guide as you try and find a good spot to watch these insects dance above the calm waters. Along with watching the fireflies light up the evening air around you, you may also get to see glowing plankton slowly illuminate the river's surface. To get a better look at them, focus on the edges of your boat that glide through the river as the plankton glow more when the water is gently disturbed.

After the river cruise, you'll be treated to a complimentary set dinner. When you've had your fill, you will drop by the Puerto Princesa Baywalk Park for a night stroll next to the sea before heading back to your hotel.

See fireflies and bioluminescent planktons glow above and on the surface of Iwahig River by booking this day tour. Check the availability by choosing a date.

History of Firefly Watching in Iwahig River

The tradition of firefly watching in Iwahig began as soon as locals and visitors discovered the majestic sight these insects presented at night. In the past, fireflies were much more widespread throughout the Philippines, but due to urbanization and environmental changes, their population has dwindled in many areas. However, the Iwahig River has remained a sanctuary for these insects, in part because of the community's efforts to protect the area and the mangroves, which are vital to the fireflies' survival.

Initially, firefly watching was something enjoyed by the local communities, but over time it gained popularity among tourists seeking unique experiences. The activity has evolved from a simple pastime to an organized eco-tourism service, managed by the locals who have an intimate knowledge of the river and its ecosystem. This management helps ensure that the environmental impact of the tours is minimized, preserving the natural setting for future generations.

Why is Firefly Watching in Iwahig River Important?

Firefly watching in Iwahig River serves as a critical reminder of the beauty of our natural world and the need for its protection. In a time when ecosystems are under threat, places like Iwahig stand as a testament to what conservation efforts can achieve. For Palawan, known as the "Last Frontier" of the Philippines due to its rich biodiversity, the firefly watching experience underscores the island's commitment to ecology and sustainable tourism.

It’s not just about the beauty and wonder these fireflies bring to spectators; they also play a key role in the local ecology as indicators of environmental quality. A healthy firefly population suggests a healthy environment, as these creatures need clean air and water to thrive. Furthermore, it contributes to community development through eco-tourism, offering employment and livelihood opportunities for local people while simultaneously fostering environmental stewardship.

Before or after your firefly sighting, you might spot other wildlife that calls the mangroves their home, such as various species of birds and perhaps other nocturnal creatures. To truly appreciate the natural beauty and tranquility, one can simply listen to the symphony of night-time sounds - the rustling of the mangrove leaves, the distant calls of wildlife, and the soft lapping of river water against your boat.

  • Mangrove paddle boat tours: During the day, explore the mangroves to see this vital ecosystem up close and appreciate its significance; you might also learn about how it protects the coastal regions from erosion and serves as a nursery for many fish species.
  • Stargazing: The remote location away from city lights makes for an excellent spot for stargazing. On a clear night, the sky above Palawan is a breathtaking canvas of stars and constellations.
  • Cultural interaction: Engage with the locals who conduct the tours to learn more about their way of life, including their practices in fishing and farming, and their stories about the river.
