jasper day trips

Just north of Banff National Park sits Jasper—a less-visited but no less beautiful national park in the Canadian Rockies. Planning a 2 to 3 days in Jasper National Park itinerary is one of the best ways to see this incredible natural area in the mountains of Alberta.

While you could spend an endless amount of time exploring the park and all the natural wonders it has to offer, spending a few days in Jasper is enough to get a feel for the park and the splendors it contains. Whether you’re looking for plenty of hikes or simply want to take in incredible lake and mountain views, visiting Jasper is never a bad idea.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Jasper National Park?

After a quick search to get a sense of all the things to do in Jasper, you’re probably left wondering how many days to spend in the national park to catch the highlights without overextending yourself. If you only have a few days, here’s what you can expect.

If you have 2 days in Jasper, you can catch the park’s most famous highlights. Plan to be met with crowds and spend much of your day driving, but you will see most of the landmarks that make this park spectacular.

With 3 days, you can either see the sights at your leisure or spend the extra day hiking and lounging. There are a number of comfortable mountain lakes and relaxing hot springs to spend a nice afternoon and round out your visit to Jasper.

Maligne Lake & Spirit Island in Jasper NP

Getting To & Around Jasper National Park

The two airports nearest Jasper National Park are Calgary International Airport and Edmonton International Airport. Calgary is about a five-hour drive away from the park while Edmonton is four hours away by car.

You can book a shuttle bus from Edmonton to Jasper, but it tends to be expensive and limits your ability to get around the park. Many visitors see Banff National Park in tandem with Jasper, so flying into Calgary and driving through Banff to Jasper makes the most sense.

Keep in mind that you will need to purchase a Park Pass in order to enter Jasper. There are a few different options available that can suit lots of different travel styles and preferences, so make sure to choose which is best for you.

That said, the best way to get around Jasper is with a car. You can rent one at whichever airport you fly into by browsing Rentalcars.com to compare prices. Alternatively, you can consider renting from Outdoorsy if you prefer an RV or campervan. This grants you the most flexibility to see the park.

You can sign up for tours such as this full-day tour but they usually won’t take you everywhere you might want to go. We highly recommend you rent a car to see through your Jasper itinerary.

2 to 3-Day Jasper Itinerary

For your itinerary to feel complete, add some of these highlights to your travel plans. You can adjust the order based on where you’re staying in the park, but the list below contains some of the park’s most impressive landmarks.

Day 1 – Jasper SkyTram, Columbia Icefields & Athabasca Glacier and Falls

Ride the jasper skytram.

Welcome yourself to Jasper by taking a ride on the Jasper SkyTram. It’s a quick way to get an early sense of everything Jasper has to offer and you can pre-book tickets here.

From the top, you’ll get panoramic views of the Rockies. You can see the town of Jasper, the Athabasca River, surrounding mountain ranges, and much more.

Take your time walking along the boardwalk with several options for viewpoints or relax in the restaurant. You can go on a short hike to the top of Whistlers Mountain. Bear in mind that the SkyTram is usually only operational from March to October, weather permitting.

Columbia Icefields

The Columbia Icefields never fail to impress their visitors. It sits along the Icefields Parkway, the highway that runs through Banff and Jasper, connecting the two parks. The icefields include several major glaciers with a few ways to get excellent views.

First, is from the Columbia Icefield Discovery Center. If you want to hike to a viewpoint, consider the Toe of the Glacier trail for a close-up view of Wilcox Pass for a bird’s-eye view.

You can also stop by the Columbia Icefield Skywalk—a glass-floored lookout that gives viewers a look over Sunwapta Valley and nearby glaciers.

Icefields Parkway

Athabasca Glacier

It’s worth it to call out one glacier in particular: Athabasca Glacier. It’s one of the most-visited glaciers in North America and it’s the lowest tip of the Columbia Icefields. During peak travel seasons, Athabasca Glacier sees a lot of tourists.

You can walk right up to the base of the glacier or you can hop on a trail nearby to get away from the crowds for a broader view. During the hikes we recommended viewing the Columbia Icefields, you’ll also get good views of Athabasca Glacier.

Athabasca Falls

Athabasca Falls is located on the upper Athabasca River, just south of the town of Jasper. There are various viewing platforms and walking trails so you can experience the falls from several angles.

The waterfall was created when the Athabasca Valley Glacier receded, revealing a cavernous landscape that pushed tons of water through.

In total, the falls are about 79 feet, with several tiers of drops. By far the best time to visit is in the early spring when snowmelt sends water pummeling over the falls.

Athabasca Falls

Day 2 – Maligne Lake and Canyon, Pyramid Lake & Medicine Lake

Maligne lake and spirit island.

If you want to start your second day on a slower note, head over the Maligne Lake. This is the largest lake in the Canadian Rockies, with stunning views of forests, mountains, and the crystal clear lake all around. The drive to this lake along the Maligne Lake Road is one of the most scenic in the entire park, with incredible views and jaw-dropping overlooks to see along the way.

One of the most popular ways to explore the lake is by boat. The boat tour takes you around the lake to point out unique geographical features and the history of the area. You’ll also make a short stop at Spirit Island. You can take a walk along the short trail around the island before heading back to the boat.

The photo of Spirit Island surrounded by the lake and mountains is one of the most iconic images of Jasper.

For those after an easy and beautiful hike in the area, also consider the Moose Lake Loop, which is a family-friendly circular route. The trailhead is located close to the boat launch area, so this is something you can easily combine with a cruise on the lake.

Medicine Lake

Medicine Lake is a popular and easy stop along the route to Maligne Lake. Its smooth waters reflect the mountains and trees surrounding it. The lake is fed by glacial water, filling it with crystal clear water. Medicine Lake has earned the nickname “disappearing lake” because of an underground drainage system.

There are sinkholes at the bottom of the lake that drain the water through caves before resurfacing about ten miles downriver. It’s a natural wonder, beautiful site to behold, and an excellent spot for looking for wildlife.

The best time to spot wildlife is early in the morning or at dusk. Elk, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, bears, and moose are all common sightings throughout the park. You can also choose to go on a wildlife tour to explore with a guide.

Medicine Lake

Maligne Canyon

Here is one of Jasper National Park’s most unique features. This narrow gorge stretches more than 160 feet in some places. Its limestone walls have been carved by the powerful Maligne River. It’s a scenic area to go on a hike along the interpretive trail.

It’s a fenced path that runs along the cliffside. You’ll cross bridges that span the canyon creating excellent vantage points over the fast-flowing river below. The canyon is especially impressive during winter.

The water freezes over to cover the gorge in ice. You can take an ice walk to see it up close and personal. But the canyon is beautiful all year round.

Pyramid Lake and Island

The little island on Pyramid Lake is an unexpected favorite for many Jasper visitors. It also happens to be one of the most iconic photo ops in the entire park.

Pyramid Lake is a calm, kidney bean-shaped lake at the base of Pyramid Mountain. Its smooth waters create a mirror reflection of the surrounding landscape. This makes it a great spot to swim on a warm day or pause for an afternoon picnic.

To reach Pyramid Island, you’ll cross a narrow wooden bridge over a shallow section of the lake.

And if you haven’t had enough lakes for the day, then consider heading a little bit away from Pyramid Lake to the beautiful Lake Edith and Lake Annette, two more incredible bodies of water nestled in the Rockies.

Pyramid Lake

Day 3 – Sunwapta Falls and Valley, Cavell Meadows, Miette Hot Springs & Lac Beauvert

Sunwapta falls and valley.

You’ll see a lot of Sunwapta Valley as you’re making your way through Jasper National Park, but Sunwapta Falls is another beautiful waterfall you’ll find in Jasper. It was created by a hanging valley.

This is a place where two valleys, one deeper than the other, collided to create a sharp drop in the landscape. At Athabasca Falls, Chaba Valley and Athabasca Valley met.

You can visit Sunwapta Falls alone or head out on the trail to visit the lesser-trafficked Lower Sunwapta Falls or hike into the backcountry. Like all waterfalls in the park, the most impressive time to visit is during the spring.

Sunwapta Falls

Cavell Meadows

The hike through Cavell Meadows is a perfect mash-up of everything Jasper has to offer over a few-mile hike. Before you go, know that because it’s a hike of moderate difficulty and offers beautiful scenery, it does tend to be popular.

Try to be on the trail earlier in the day. That said, along this hike, you pass by alpine meadows, wildflowers, Angel Glacier, and Cavell Pond, with stunning views of Mt. Edith Cavell. You can expect to run into some wildlife here as well. Marmots and pikas are common.

Miette Hot Springs

What better way to conclude seeing Jasper in 3 days by relaxing in hot springs? After you’ve walked many miles and taken in all the park’s stunning beauty, head over to Fiddle Valley where you’ll find Miette Hot Springs.

These outdoor pools are located high in the hills, granting visitors exceptional views while they enjoy the warmest natural hot springs in the Rockies. The water emerges from the ground at 54°C (129°F) and is cooled to 40°C (104°F) before being funnelled into the pool.

The pools are generally open from May to October but double-check before your visit.

Road to Miette Hot Springs

Lac Beauvert

If you have time to spare on your last day in Jasper, visit Lac Beauvert. It’s convenient to reach if you’re staying in the town of Jasper as it’s located near the Jasper Park Lodge. You can explore the lake in multiple ways.

First, you have the option of hiking around the lake on the Lac Beauvert Trail. This entirely forested trail circles the lake and stretches just over two miles long. Alternatively, you can rent a kayak, paddle board, or pedal boat to see the lake and surrounding landscape from the water.

It’s quiet, serene, and relaxing. The Jasper Planetarium is also located on the lakeshore.

Have More Time?

Spend an afternoon or morning wandering around the townsite of Jasper. It was formerly a railroad hub, but Jasper is now a charming town filled with bakeries, restaurants, and cafes.

If you’re interested in taking a deeper dive into the local cuisine, you can sign up for a food tour to taste some of the highlights. You also could opt to visit nearby Patricia Lake if you haven’t had enough of gorgeous lakes on your trip.

Mount Robson is the tallest mountain in the Canadian Rockies and just a short day trip from Jasper. Mount Robson Provincial Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers guests an exceptional visitor’s center where you can enjoy nice views of the mountain and surrounding landscape.

There are several options throughout the park to see it from the water as well. You can rent a canoe, kayak, or paddle board to explore one of the lakes. Another option is taking a rafting tour on the Athabasca River, with a few exciting rapids and tons of stunning viewpoints.

Mount Robson

FAQs about Jasper National Park

What is the best time of year to visit jasper national park.

While summer is considered the best time of year to visit Jasper National Park is beautiful year-round. Summer brings warm weather, summer activities like hiking and whitewater rafting, and with it: crowds. Winter is a great time to visit for a colder and quieter visit with lots of fun winter activities like snowboarding and skating.

How Many Days Do You Need in Jasper National Park?

For a first-time visit, you should spend at least 3 days in Jasper National Park. While people tend to spend more time in Banff and Lake Louise, it’s hard to just spend a day in Jasper. I found three days to be a good introduction to this beautiful national park.

Final Thoughts: Best Jasper National Park Tours

Jasper National Park is full of incredible sights and experiences. Whether you’re looking for an adrenaline-filled whitewater rafting adventure, a scenic helicopter ride, or a walking food tour, Jasper has something for everyone.

One of the best Jasper National Park tours is the Athabasca River Easy Scenic Raft Trip . Fun, but not scary and perfect for summertime.

Jasper is the little town that packs a big punch, situated in a national park by the same name. Often overlooked by Banff, its neighbour on the other end of the Icefields Parkway , it most certainly should not be. This mountain town may be a bit harder to get to, but it is definitely worth the effort. And the Jasper itinerary that we’ve outlined for you below will ensure that you get the most out of your trip there.

A bird's eye view of Jasper townsite

In all honesty, given the lengthy drive to and from Jasper, a weekend getaway won’t give you nearly enough time. In fact, if you are a lover of outdoor adventures – we recommend a week! But for this itinerary, we’ve settled on a bunch of juicy recommendations for how to spend the perfect 3 days in Jasper.

  • Where to Stay in Jasper

Before we get into the details of your Jasper National Park itinerary, it’s important to figure out where you’re going to stay. Thankfully, the town of Jasper has plenty of wonderful accommodation options, and no matter your budget, there are choices to suit your needs.

Luxury – If you’re looking for all-out luxury on your trip, we recommended 2 accommodations to book for your 3 days in Jasper.

The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is a beautiful mountain resort overlooking Lac Beauvert; stay in one of the cedar chalets nestled among the forest trees for the ultimate in comfort, relaxation, and luxury. Or book a stay at the Tekarra Lodge , where you can have your own cabin while taking in the views of the surrounding mountains to make you feel as though you have the snow-capped Canadian Rockies all to yourself.

Spend 3 days in Jasper at the Tekarra Lodge cabin

Mid-Range – For mid-range accommodation, we highly recommend the Jasper Inn and Suites . Located in the heart of the town of Jasper, it’s an ideal base for exploring the town and the rest of Jasper National Park. With an indoor pool, dog-friendly rooms, and extremely welcoming staff, the Jasper Inn and Suites is perfect for families, couples, and anyone else hoping to explore Jasper for a few days.

Budget – For the budget traveller, try Tonquin Inn found in the town of Jasper. With comfortable rooms and friendly staff, the hotel is a great choice for some R&R after a long day of exploring the Rocky Mountains, especially if your day includes a hike on one of the many nearby hiking trails.

Outside the Jasper Inn and Suites

Looking for more options? We have an entire guide dedicated to Jasper accommodations and also our selection of the best Jasper Airbnbs .

The Perfect 3 Days in Jasper Itinerary

As Jasper National Park takes five hours along the Icefields Parkway (highway 93) from Calgary and four hours driving west of Edmonton, we assume you’ll be arriving in Jasper mid-day. If you’re coming directly from Banff National Park along the Icefields Parkway, that’s 3.5 hours (minimum) of driving (assuming you don’t stop for lots of photos along the way – which we’re sure you will).

The Road that leads to Jasper with the Rocky Mountains in the distance.

As many people combine trips to the Banff and Jasper National Parks, we do indeed encourage you to take in as much of the scenery on the drive, so start your journey to Jasper early. It’s one of the most beautiful routes in Canada, after all!

Don’t Forget!

You will need a parks pass to enter into Jasper National Park or to drive from Banff to Jasper. You can purchase your pass online or when you arrive at the gates. A word of caution, be prepared to wait in long lines during the summer months if you choose to purchase your pass at the gates.

Day 1 – Lunch in Jasper

But after all that driving, you’re sure to be hungry. After checking in at your accommodation, start your trip in Jasper National Park by heading to one of Jasper’s many lunch spots. Swing by the Patricia Street Deli for a hearty sandwich or enjoy the patio at Raven Bistro while you indulge in some Moroccan fusion.

Day 1 – Chasing Waterfalls

After lunch, it’s time to chase some waterfalls. As Jasper National Park is home to some of the most magnificent waterfalls in Alberta (and Canada!), spotting a few of them is an absolute must during your days in Jasper. But don’t worry, after a long morning of driving, we won’t send you on any arduous hikes!

Be sure to make a stop at Athabasca Falls

First, head to Athabasca Falls. Approximately 30 minutes south of the town of Jasper on the Icefields Parkway, you’ll find a one-kilometre out-and-back hiking trail that is suitable for all levels. Take in the magnificent views of the canyon and the Athabasca River as you make your way to the thundering Athabasca Falls. This glacier-fed waterfall has plenty of viewpoints, so you can easily spend a few hours exploring the area. If you visit in the summer months, prepare for hot weather by bringing lots of water, sunscreen, and a hat to shield your face from the sun.

After your visit to Athabasca Falls, make your way to Sunwapta Falls, another one of Jasper National Park’s gems and one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in Alberta. This pair of cascading waterfalls are found along the Icefields Parkway, approximately 40 minutes south of the town of Jasper.

Sunwapta Falls in Jasper National Park

The Upper Falls are found just next to the road and don’t require much of a walk from the parking lot, so they’re hard to miss! After taking a few photos here, you can choose to hike to the Lower Falls; this short out-and-back trail allows you to explore the gorgeous forest and mountain scenery, culminating in the view of the majestic Lower Sunwapta Falls.

Day 1 – Dinner in Jasper

After your waterfall adventure, head back to Jasper. For a small town, there’s a fantastic array of Jasper restaurants to choose from for dinner, but we recommend the Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen , found on Maligne Lake Road.

Maligne Lake Wilderness Kitchen

Listen to the sounds of the river and try to spot wildlife as you enjoy one of their Wilderness Platters featuring locally sourced ingredients; there are lots of gluten-friendly and vegetarian options, too. You can’t go wrong with a stunning view and a delicious menu to match.

After dinner and a full belly, head back to the hotel and get some rest – tomorrow will be busy!

Day 1 introduced you to Jasper National Park, but your time in the region is only just beginning. Though some may think a day trip to Jasper is all you need, we think you’ll really appreciate having days 2 and 3.

Day 2 – Breakfast in Jasper

If you’re not having breakfast at your hotel, head to Sunhouse Cafe in Jasper’s town centre for a mouthwatering meal. Reviews for the café consistently place it as one of the best breakfast spots in Jasper, if not the best. Fill up, because it’s going to be an active day!

Day 2 – Jasper by Motorcycle or Maligne Lake Boat Tour

Jasper motorcycle tours.

Next on the itinerary is a bit of adrenaline. See the Canadian Rockies through a whole new lens as you ride a sidecar on a motorcycle tour through Jasper National Park. Trust us, this is one experience you’ll never forget! With Jasper Motorcycle Tours , you can sit back and take in the views all while you feel the wind through your hair.

See Jasper National Park a whole different way with Jasper Motorcycle Tours.

Explore the famous Icefields Parkway while your experienced tour guide fills you in on the geology and history of the region. Each sidecar can hold two passengers, including children, and you can choose your length of trip ranging from one hour to three hours.

Maligne Lake Boat Tour

If motorcycles aren’t for you, head to Maligne Lake for a chance to experience one of Jasper National Park’s most beautiful attractions: Spirit Island. This small island is one of the most photographed spots in Jasper; surrounded by the mountain peaks of the Canadian Rockies and the turquoise waters of Maligne Lake.

The Maligne Lake Boat Tour to Spirit Island

It’s the image of Spirit Island that many people think of when they think of Jasper National Park. In fact, a visit to Maligne Lake and Spirit Island is rated as one of the top boat cruises in Canada and is sure to be a highlight of your trip to Jasper.

Want to check out more guided experiences? We’ve got a whole article about tours in Jasper .

Day 2 – Lunch in Jasper

After your half-day adventure, head back into town for lunch. Our choice is Harvest Food and Drink , a cozy spot known for its excellent service, generous portions, and wonderful use of locally sourced ingredients. There are many vegetarian and vegan options, too.

Day 2 – Experience Jasper From Above

After a relaxing lunch, next on the itinerary is a visit to the Jasper SkyTram . This is one of the most popular activities in Jasper National Park , and it’s easy to see why. Found just minutes from town, experience the sensation of being whisked above the mountains for a panoramic view of Jasper and the encompassing area.

See Jasper from above by taking the Jasper SkyTram above the clouds

As the Jasper SkyTram is the highest and longest aerial tramway in Canada, you’ll travel to over 2,200 metres above sea level for some of the best views in the country.

Once at the top of the mountain, there are a couple of options before taking the Jasper SkyTram back down to Jasper. If you’re feeling energetic and in the mood for hiking, the Whistlers Summit Trail is a moderate out-and-back trail that will take a couple of hours to explore. It’s steep in areas, but well worth the views once you get to the top of the mountain!

Dinner at Summit Restaurant

If a hike isn’t in the cards for you, spend some time in the Summit Restaurant and Café, where you can choose to sip a hot chocolate or have dinner to take in the views of Jasper National Park at your own pace.

Day 2 – Dinner in Jasper

For dinner, make your way back into Jasper for your choice of cuisine. Meat lovers will want to check out Syrahs of Jasper , while those after a bit of seafood should head to Fiddle River Restaurant . With so many amazing options for restaurants in Jasper , it may be difficult to narrow it down to one!

Day 2 – Seeing Stars in Jasper

If you’re feeling tired, head back to the hotel for some much-deserved sleep. But if you’ve caught your second wind, we highly recommend a tour with the Jasper Dark Sky Preserve . Jasper National Park is one of only 17 Dark Sky Preserves in Canada, making it a phenomenal place to go stargazing. See the sky like you never have before as you witness the mind-boggling amount of stars visible above you.

Seeing stars in Jasper National Park's Dark Sky Preserve

Doesn’t it feel like your 3 days in Jasper National Park are flying by?

Day 3 – Breakfast in Jasper

Start Day 3 with a good breakfast, either at the hotel or at SnowDome Coffee Bar in town. Don’t be shocked that the coffee bar is in a laundromat. It’s known as being home to the best baristas in Jasper, so grab a strong coffee and some breakfast bites before your busy day.

Day 3 – Take a Hike in Jasper

After breakfast, head out on one of the many hikes in Jasper National Park . The Maligne Canyon Loop Trail is one of our favourite hiking trails, and at 3.4 kilometres, it’s a great way to start your day of adventure. The trail features waterfalls, six bridges (if you dare to do all of them), and unbelievable views throughout the canyon. As always, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the majestic Canadian Rockies that surround you.

A bridge viewpoint on the Maligne Canyon Hike

Another potential hike to take in Jasper National Hike is the Valley of the Five Lakes Loop . Rated as a moderate hiking trail off of the Icefields Parkway, though still suitable for beginners, views of mountain peaks can be found as you walk through lush forest around the lakes. Make sure to set aside at least two hours to complete the loop, as you’re sure to spend lots of time taking photos of the snow-capped mountains and the shimmering lakes. You might even be lucky enough to spot some wildlife!

Day 3 – Paddling a Canoe in Jasper

If you’re not into hiking, a paddle on a lake may be more your speed. There is simply nothing like paddling on the pristine waters of Pyramid Lake while taking in the fresh air and mountain views. Choose from kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, and more; rentals are available from the Pyramid Lake Resort.

Canoe on Pyramid Lake in Jasper National Park

While you’re near Pyramid Lake, make sure to visit Pyramid Island. A short but beautiful walk around the small island is perfect for bird watching, wildlife spotting, photography, and, of course, taking in the scenery and the fresh mountain air. *Note that reservations with Parks Canada may now be required to visit Pyramid Island.

Day 3 – A Food Tour in Jasper

It’s time to head back into town because up next on the itinerary is one for the foodies: a food tour of Jasper! From 2:30 to 5:30 every day, take a 1.5-kilometre guided walk through local restaurants. Your guide will fill you in on lots of Jasper insider knowledge while you sample some of the best of Jasper’s cuisine. What could be better?

Churros on the Jasper Food Tour

Alongside the memorable culinary scene in Jasper National Park, there’s also a fantastic shopping scene. Stroll through the town of Jasper to explore the multitude of local shops selling everything from mountain-inspired souvenirs to contemporary fashion and so much more.

A couple enjoys an ice cream while shopping in the Jasper downtown.

Day 3 – Dinner in Jasper

Can you believe that your three days in Jasper National Park are already coming to an end? Make sure to pick a memorable dinner spot to commemorate your time in Jasper. We recommend The Pines Restaurant, situated on Pyramid Lake, for an exceptional meal made from locally sourced ingredients, including fresh meat, fish, and produce. Relax by the lake and reminisce about your amazing time in Jasper National Park!

On Your Way Out

And that’s it! That’s your perfect three days in Jasper. From here, you can head back to Calgary, Edmonton, Banff National Park, or your next Alberta destination. If you’re heading back to Calgary, enjoy the Icefields Parkway in the opposite direction. If you’re heading back to Edmonton, be sure to stop at the Miette Hot Springs for a soak (some of the best water of all the Alberta hot springs ). Your body will appreciate it and your eyes will appreciate the view.

A stop at Miette Hot Springs on a bright blue day is a must for 3 days in Jasper.

Day Trip from Canmore to Jasper

Located only 24 km from Banff and sitting on the doorstep of Kananaskis Country and several spectacular national parks, the beautiful town of Canmore is an ideal “home base” for a Rocky Mountain getaway. Driving from Canmore to Jasper

The drive from Canmore to Jasper along the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) is an awe-inspiring journey that is guaranteed to be one of the most amazing trips of your lifetime. The beauty here is unparalleled! Spanning 232km (141 miles), the Icefields Parkway boasts an awesome landscape consisting of untouched mountain lakes, expansive wilderness, alpine meadows and brilliant glaciers, as it leads you through Banff and Jasper National Parks. Expect a breathtaking vista of endless Rocky Mountain peaks! Stop at Athabasca Falls to admire this impressive, powerful waterfall. There is also a good chance that you will spot wildlife during your drive. Keep your eyes open for bighorn sheep, mountain goats, black bears, grizzly bears, elk and moose!

Ended up on Icefields Parkway at sunset by accident since all the campsites in Banff were full, and I had to keep driving north. Had I been in a car with a tent to set up, I'd probably be freaking out with nowhere to stay. Instead, I enjoyed the solitude on this otherwise very busy highway and eventually found a little pullout to hide at for the night. I don't usually prefer sleeping where I'm not supposed to, especially when I'm solo. I'm always so worried about getting busted and paranoid about creeps. But this night it was going to have to do, and happy to say I survived ?? A post shared by Kristen • Bearfoot Theory (@bearfoottheory) on Jul 9, 2017 at 8:38am PDT

The drive from Canmore along the Icefields Parkway to the Athabasca Glacier takes about 2.5 hours. From the Columbia Icefields, you can reach Jasper  in 90 minutes . The total distance from Canmore to Jasper is 311 km (one way), which takes approximately four hours (one way). We recommend departing Canmore early in the morning and watching the sun rise, bathing the dynamic Rockies with a marvellous pink light. Return “home” to Canmore in the evening while watching the sun set behind majestic mountain peaks.

Columbia Icefield

Tour the ancient Athabasca Glacier and Columbia Icefield on board a jumbo “Ice Explorer” — an over-sized bus with gigantic tires and powerful treads. Learn about glaciers and icefields from an experienced guide. Surround yourself in the magic of nature by stepping out of the Ice Explorer and putting your feet on the glacier. Details about Columbia Icefield Glacier Tours:

  • Ice Explorers depart every 15 to 30 minutes (weather permitting);
  • Tours depart from the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre on the Icefields Parkway;
  • For individuals, reservations are not required; and

Jasper as a Destination

With a population of about 5,200 residents, Jasper has a laid-back small town vibe. This charismatic and quiet town is circled by magnificent mountains — the Victoria Cross Ranges (northwest), Pyramid Mountain (north), Maligne Range (southeast) and Indian Range (southwest). For a privileged bird’s eye view of these breathtaking mountain ranges, the Jasper Tramway escorts guests up Whistler’s Mountain (2,277 meters; 7,472 feet). A hiking trail leads you to the summit. Jasper is a popular destination for biking , hiking , horseback riding and more.   Our top places to visit in Jasper while there for a day trip:   Jasper Park Lodge  — Enjoy a drink or lunch on the lakeside patio while breathing in the fabulous view of Edith Cavell Mountain. After lunch, take a walk around the beautiful, green-tinged lake.

Backpacking trails in Jasper National Park

Jasper National Park is the largest park in the Canadian Rockies and host to unbelievable landscapes replete with towering peaks, turquoise lakes, ancient glaciers, and diverse wildlife. Much of Jasper National Park is accessible to anyone who wants to venture out along the Icefields Parkway and take a day hike, however the unbelievable views and escape into nature are saved for those with a pack and a desire to sleep under the stars.

Backpacking in Jasper National Park is an amazing experience. There are over 1,200.0 km of trails with varying degrees of accessibility. There are exceptionally beautiful routes with well-maintained campsites and trails that can make for a fairly easy and safe trip. Backpackers can also find respite from the crowds and truly get into the wild along some less frequented routes and possibly unmaintained trails that require a little more work. Whatever type of backpacking experience you are seeking, you will not be disappointed backpacking in Jasper National Park.

THE TOP 10 BACKPACKS IN JASPER NATIONAL PARK, ALBERTA

  • Skyline Trail ( 40.9 km , 1,500 m , 3-4 days): Being Jasper's highest backpacking trail, The Skyline is a great way to experience the best the Canadian Rockies and Jasper National Park have to offer. Over 20.0 km s of this trail are above treeline, and the majestic views continue into what seems like unreachable distances. For those new to the sterile beauty of the crumbling Rocky Mountains, three days spent on this trail will serve as an excellent introduction to backpacking in the Canadian Rockies, and definitely leave you wanting more!
  • Maligne Pass and Replica Peak ( 38.7 km , 1,758 m , 2-3 days): Maligne Pass is a wonderful alpine pass in a rarely-visited area of Jasper National Park. Here you will find one of the largest alpine passes in the Rockies, dotted with tarns and wildflowers and surrounded by some of the largest peaks in the Rockies.
  • Tonquin Valley ( 42.2 km , 966 m , 3-5 days): The Tonquin Valley is a wide, 5.0 km long pass with over 50.0 km of hiking trails winding their way through this backcountry paradise. The prize of the trip is hiking below the Ramparts, a series of 10 castellated peaks atop a 1,000 m wall of limestone. Catch stunning reflections of this massive in the interconnected Amethyst Lakes. It is also one of the few remaining areas where it is still common to see the shy and elusive mountain caribou, an endangered species. The backpacking trip can be completed in three days, but many prefer to stay longer, allowing time for day trips to the Eremite Valley and Moat Lake.
  • Berg Lake Trail at Mount Robson ( 56.6 km , 910 m , 3-5 days): Mount Robson is the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies. The Berg Lake Trail is technically outside Jasper, but so close we added it here. The Berg Lake Trail is renowned as one of Canada’s best, and for good reason, it’s stunning. You’ll pass through lush valleys, impressive waterfalls, and rocky slopes to reach the aptly-named Berg Lake. The views of the Berg Glacier toeing off into the lake are unforgettable, and the day hikes from here will take you to icefields, caves, and stunning viewpoints.
  • Cairn Pass ( 62.3 km , 1,984 m , 3-5 days): Cairn Pass is one of the most isolated passes in the Canadian Rockies; you’re more likely to encounter bears than people on this route. Alpine meadows, the Medicine Tent River, and alpine lakes make up the variable scenery along this remote trip.
  • Cataract and Cline Pass ( 37.2 km , 1,315 m , 2-3 days): The trip to Cataract and Cline Pass covers vast meadows, uniquely-coloured rock, glacial streams, and high glaciers of Cataract Pass, making this a truly unique backpacking destination in Jasper National Park.

Berg Lake Trail – Backpacking

Yes, Berg Lake isn't in Jasper, or Alberta, but it's often associated with trips to Jasper, so we included it. The Berg Lake Trail is renowned as one of Canada's best, and it would be hard to find someone who disagrees. You'll pass through lush valleys, impressive waterfalls, and rocky slopes to reach the aptly-named Berg Lake, below the towering Mount Robson. The views of the Berg Glacier toeing off into the lake are unforgettable, and the day hikes from here will take you to icefields, caves, and stunning viewpoints.

Backpacking to Jacques Lake is a great way to find solitude without a lengthy mission. It is a short and easy hike to the campsite. The trail gains very little elevation before reaching Jacques Lake Campground, which rests next to the lake itself. Watch for Moose as they are known to frequent the area around dusk.

Fiddle River Backpacking Trail

The Fiddle River trail starts outside of Jasper National Park in the Whitehorse Wilderness Area. This rough wilderness route is the perfect adventure for those looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in nature. The trail follows an incredible valley and leads hikers over high passes before descending to the popular Miette Hot Springs.

Fryatt Valley Backpacking Trail

Fryatt Valley is a 36.8 km out-and-back route that takes backpackers through an incredible and diverse alpine landscape. It is one of Jasper’s crown jewels and offers three camping options and an alpine hut. Groups of all abilities can customize this trip to meet their needs, making this an excellent trip for all.
