Tour de Grandview

Each year some of the streets in Grandview are closed to auto traffic and open for bicyclists. It's called the Tour de Grandview and it is a favorite stop for top cyclists from the U.S. and around the world. The Tour features 2 days of bicycle racing through the streets of Grandview , as well as a number of events and activities for spectators and cyclists alike.

The Tour de Grandview is Ohio's premier professional cycling race. The event was organized in the early 1990s and has become an annual event in Grandview that attracts many out-of-town, out-of-country pro riders.

The Tour is organized by the non-profit Grandview Community Association with the support of the City of Grandview Heights and a host of local volunteers and sponsoring businesses.

The lion's share of the purse will be awarded to the top finishers in the elite men's and women's categories that will feature more than 300 professional cyclists. Prize money also will be paid to placers in the Masters and Juniors categories. Unlike other events of its kind, the Tour will award equal prize money to the men and women.

"We're very proud to be able to offer such a sizable purse for this year's Tour and to reward our top men and women finishers equally," said Tour organizer Julie Whitley of the Grandview Community Association. "It's a testament not only to the growth and stature of the event, but also the generous contributions of Germain and our many other corporate supporters."

Among the events tied to this year's Tour will be the Kids' Sprints competition and Ohio Cup Series criterium races on Saturday afternoon. Saturday night will feature a street party with food, drinks, live entertainment and children's activities. Sunday afternoon will feature the signature Tour de Grandview Criterium race.

The races will feature men and women cyclists in multiple professional categories. The criterium courses will cover a number of the hilly, tree-lined streets on either side of Grandview Avenue, the city's main thoroughfare.

Anyone interested in watching some professional bike racers race? The Tour de Grandview is coming … and here’s all the info (from the press release sent out by the organizers). Watching a bike race up close and personal is really cool, especially as they fly around the corners in a tight bunch. How do they do it and not fall over?

Here’s all the info….

The Tour de Grandview Cycling Classic presented by Lyndsay Acura/Honda, one of Ohio’s premier cycling events, will return to Grandview Heights for the 21 st time on Friday, June 27.

A favorite stop for top professional cyclists from the U.S. and around the world, this year’s event will feature a night of world-class bicycle racing through the streets of suburban Grandview, plus lots of fun, family entertainment.

The Tour de Grandview’s marquee races will feature professional men and women, as well as top amateur riders, in races ranging from 15 to 30 miles at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. The criterium course will start and finish on W. First Avenue between Glendale and Hope Avenues, and will include the well-known Bank Block on Grandview Avenue, as well as Willard and Second Avenues. There also will be a Kids’ Sprints competition along First Avenue with prizes going to the fastest child riders in a variety of age groups, as well as a $5-per-rider Charity Lap to raise funds for Pelotonia.

Going on around the races will be the annual Grandview Hop Street Party, which this year will feature the music of Agent 99, food vendors and craft beers tapped by The Ohio Taproom. Events are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. and will run throughout the evening.

“We’re so glad to have the Tour back for the 21 st time,” said Grandview Heights Mayor Ray DeGraw. “It’s one of Grandview’s great annual traditions and one of the best summer events in central Ohio. We look forward to welcoming the cyclists, gathering with neighbors and friends, seeing the races and enjoying the party, and we welcome everyone in Columbus to join us.”

The Tour de Grandview, along with Madeira’s Centennial Criterium and Cincinnati’s Hyde Park Blast, make up a vaunted cycling triple-header in Ohio. Each race will be run the weekend of June 27-29, with many cyclists competing in all three.

Rider registration (and more information) for the Tour de Grandview is now open at www.tourdegrandview.com .

The Tour de Grandview Cycling Classic attracts an international field of professional cyclists to central Ohio each year, as well as cycling enthusiasts and spectators. Celebrating its 21 st year in 2014, the Tour is organized by the non-profit Grandview Community Association with the support of the City of Grandview Heights, local volunteers and sponsoring businesses.

Tour de France legends Julich, Vande Velde and Hincapie will ride alongside the first 200 registered riders to a casual, one-kilometer speed criterium loop race that travels around downtown for 20 minutes beginning at 5:15 p.m.

During Hincapie's 27-year professional cycling career, he won three U.S. Professional Road Race championships and finished second in the 2005 Paris-Roubaix, still the highest-placing American ranking for that specific race.
