Colorado news | homeless camp in canon city converted to permanent housing, officials break ground on 30-unit permanent supportive housing project.

Journey Home, nestled between Mountain View Community Church and the Heatherwood Apartments along Justice Center Road, also will connect formerly homeless adults and families with case management, mental health treatment and vocational training. The complex is expected to cost about $9.5 million.

Applications for residency will be accepted about 90 days before the apartments are set to open in June, according to DeeDee Clement, executive director for Loaves and Fishes Ministries of Fremont County.

“Journey Home will provide safe and affordable housing to Fremont County’s most vulnerable citizens, many who are considered to be super-users or frequent users of our community’s resources,” Clement said. “Finding themselves trapped in a cycle of homelessness, they must rely on our community crisis resources for survival … costing communities literally hundreds of thousands of dollars or more annually — Journey Home will help reduce those costs in our community by providing affordable housing with supportive services designed to help people who face the most complex challenges and to live with stability, autonomy, dignity and hope.”

Marta Weiss, 56, hopes to become one of the first residents of Journey Home. Weiss is a participant of New Creations Inn, a 12- to 24-month transitional housing program through Loaves & Fishes. Prior to that, she was homeless.

“This will be affordable and supportive housing,” she said after a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday. “It will be convenient to everything I need.”

Journey Home Breaks Ground in Cañon City, Colorado

On Thursday, July 20th, 2017, Cardinal Capital joined local, state, federal officials, investment and development partners to celebrate the groundbreaking of Journey Home, a 30-unit permanent supportive housing project in Cañon City, Colorado.

Combining housing with access to support services, the 3-story structure under construction at 250 Justice Center Road will connect formerly homeless adults and families with case management, mental health treatment and vocational training.

Journey Home is the result of a unique partnership between Loaves & Fishes Ministries of Fremont County and Cardinal Capital. Part of a statewide effort to strengthen the continuum of services available to Colorado’s vulnerable homeless population, Journey Home’s housing-first approach helps those in crisis address employment, health concerns, substance use, and other issues that may have been neglected in the day-to-day struggle to survive on the streets.

Financed with equity raised from Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits awarded by Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, and 30 Project-based Housing Choice Vouchers provided by Colorado Department of Local Affairs’ Division of Housing and administered by the Upper Arkansas Area Council of Governments, occupancy of all 30 units will be restricted to households with annual incomes of less than 50% of area median income. However, the income of the typical resident will be below the poverty line.

The development and construction of Journey Home is lead by Cardinal Capital and the project is expected to be complete in June 2018.

First stitches donates new machines to cañon city’s journey home.

Residents of Journey Home, Cañon City’s new permanent supportive housing project, will soon have the opportunity to learn new skills without leaving the building. Thanks to a generous donation from First Stitches Sewing and Quilt Shop, Journey Home now has five, new sewing machines for residents to utilize. In the upcoming weeks, Journey Home staff will be collaborating with community sewing experts who have agreed to volunteer time to teach classes.

Journey Home family navigator Tessa Lance feels that sewing can be more than just a hobby.

“I’m hopeful our residents will enjoy sewing as a meditation, that they will feel empowered as they learn to create things and take time for themselves,” she said.

First Stitches owner Kimberly Smith is excited to provide this opportunity for Journey Home residents.

“I am a firm believer in the old cliché: busy hands, happy heart; and happy hearts build an awesome community,” she said. “Cañon City and the organizations that help the less fortunate in our area, are truly dedicated to serving these individuals and families. We, at First Stitches, feel very blessed that we can help contribute in a small way.”

Debra Crockett, a retired Family and Consumer Science teacher, will soon begin leading a weekly class for residents. In the class, students will begin by learning the basics and will work toward completing more complicated projects including altering personal clothing and quilting. This class will be a great opportunity for residents to learn a new skill, and continue building the Journey Home community.

2A street improvements set to begin on Field Avenue

Beginning the week of Oct. 1, Field Avenue from Central Avenue to South Street will be closed for reconstruction.

There will be significant changes in traffic patterns in the area:

— Traffic on Central Avenue will have to stop at Raynolds Avenue.

— Parents dropping off and picking up children at Harrison School and MVCKS will be re-routed to Raynolds Avenue connecting temporarily to South Street.

The work zone will be dynamic, and the city asks that all drivers be attentive, slow down, and follow all traffic signs.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Our community outreach programs help improve the lives of vulnerable families in our community by providing groceries and financial assistance. The community outreach programs are designed to help our neighbors maintain their housing and avoid homelessness.  

The Food Pantry is open Monday – Thursday from 9am – 1pm. Food d onations can be dropped off   Monday – Friday from 9am –3:30pm.         

Mobile Food Pantry on the 2 nd Friday of each month from 11am – noon at The Expedition Church—200 Justice Center Road, Canon City, CO 81212.  

Senior Food Boxes for those over 60 are distributed on the 3 rd Friday of each month from    11am – 2pm.  Registration is required, please call 719.275.0593 for details.    

Rental and Utility Assistance requests, please call 719.275.0593 .    

Daytime Showers are available for individuals who are experiencing homelessness who are not staying in a shelter.  Showers are open Monday and Friday from 9am – 12:30pm.  Towels and personal hygiene items are available.     

Grab-and-Go Hot Meals are served every day and open to anyone who is hungry.  Breakfast is served at 6am and supper is served at 6pm.  

Street Outreach is conducted at least twice a week.  The services provided are designed to engage and build relationships with people experiencing homelessness who may be disconnected and alienated not only from mainstream services and supports, but from the services targeting homeless persons.
