10 years later, there’s still nothing like Journey’s multiplayer

Journey turns 10 today.

The game’s multiplayer still has an effect on me.

I’ll never forget the first time I played Journey .

Throughout the game, real-life players can join you on your quest toward a mountain on the horizon. Players can fade in and out of your adventure — maybe they want to go faster than you, maybe they just quit — but in the latter half of my game, I had found somebody who stuck with me. Journey has no voice or text chat and no names identifying other players you meet. The only way we could communicate was through our movements, sticking close together to refill each other’s energy, and singsong chirps. Despite those limitations, we built a rapport.

Near the end of Journey , you have to scale the mountain, and as you approach the peak, you get caught in a storm. Much of the game is filled with sunlight, flight, and joyful music, but the mountain is gray, winds buffet your character, and the music is, at times, uncomfortable. Even though the level was draining, I was happy that I had my companion, and we huddled together as we marched toward the peak.

Eventually, the music fades out, and you can only hear your footsteps trudging ever more slowly through the elements. Then, as the game grew silent, my friend collapsed into the snow. I actually cried out in dismay. Then my character fell over, too, and the screen faded to white.

In many video games, you die a lot. That was the only time a virtual death has made me feel like I had actually lost a friend.

Fortunately, that’s not actually the end. In a cutscene, I was revived soon after I fell, and then, in an exuberant celebration of color and music that’s perhaps my favorite video game “level” of all time, soared toward the top of the mountain — with my once-fallen friend flying alongside me.

Journey turns 10 years old today, March 13th, and I still haven’t experienced anything like that moment. To mark the anniversary and learn more about the game’s bond-forging multiplayer, I spoke with Jenova Chen, president and creative director of Journey developer thatgamecompany. While it may feel like the game is effortlessly pairing you with companions as you go along, based on what he told me, it wasn’t quite that simple.

The goal for Journey was to “innovate how it feels between people on the internet,” Chen said. “Can we invent the right environment, the right feedback, to bring out something that we’re more proud of? And to have an online game where people feel friendly and compassionate towards each other?” He elaborated further later in our conversation. “We want to see two people going through the journey together, [like when] in our life, we meet someone special, and we travel with them, and eventually, we might depart from each other.”

“Human beings, unfortunately, are giant babies”

While it was a profound ideal, “the reality is: human beings, unfortunately, are giant babies in the virtual world,” Chen said. “No matter how old you are, even if you’re in your 70s, if we move you from Earth and into a virtual space, [that person] would become a giant baby. A baby doesn’t know what is a good moral value versus what is a bad moral value. The baby only knows: if I’m in a new environment, I’m going to try to push the buttons and see what kind of feedback I can get, and babies are great at looking for maximum feedback.”

To encourage compassion, the team tested a lot of ideas. They tried a system inspired by Gears of War that let you help out an incapacitated friend but found that even in playtests among the developers, the player would rather not help the other person out. “That way, they create a lot of anxiety in the other player and make the other player more angry. And they actually get more gratification out of the feedback,” Chen said.

They also tested a mechanic where one person could push the other high up, and then that person would pull the first. “But once we gave this physics simulation to the players, they chose to push each other off the wall and see them fall from the cliff and die, waiting to be helped,” Chen said.

During those tests, people would say, “I would rather play this game alone. Why do you force me to play with this other person? I hate them,” according to Chen. That’s because “killing is much bigger feedback than just helping the other person to get on a ledge,” Chen said.

“At the time, I was like, ‘Is humanity at its core just dark?’”

The challenges of making those mechanics work affected Chen. “At the time, I was like, ‘Is humanity at its core just dark?’” he said. But a child psychologist helped Chen see things in terms of the way babies view feedback. “If you don’t want babies to do something terrible, give them zero feedback,” he recalled learning from her. “Don’t give them negative feedback because they will misinterpret that as positive feedback.”

That led to a change that would have a huge effect on the game: when you got close to someone, you’d recharge their energy. (In the final game, you use your energy to fly.) “And so that makes people feel like ‘Oh, I love to stay near someone because I don’t have to run to find the energy,’” he said. “So they end up sticking together, and they travel together, and they form a companionship. That was just one simple change. From assholes who want to kill each other and dancing around their corpse, creating hatred, to ‘hey, they’re all lovey-dovey, they’re helping each other, and they couldn’t leave each other.’”

A friend and I hanging out on our quest.

The team also had to experiment to land on the musical chirps that players can use to communicate with each other. They tried a “thumbs up and thumbs down idea” where you could push the thumbstick up to show a green ping and push it down to show a red ping. But in testing, the majority of pings were red as players spammed them to bug their partner to do what they wanted, which created feelings of stress.

“Eventually, we realized it’s better just to keep it neutral,” Chen said. “And then we let the frequency and the amplitude [of the ping] be interpreted by the other player. But we noticed that when we don’t add context, people usually interpret the other person’s intention positively. I think that’s deep down our human nature.”

The chirp is like a musical instrument

Even though the chirp is intended to be neutral, it’s not a static noise. It’s almost like a musical instrument, and its sound evolves throughout the game, Journey composer Austin Wintory told me. “At the very beginning of the game, it’s very bird-like, and there’s flute and little bits of cello,” he said. But over the course of the game, you’ll hear more of a human voice within that sound. “So by the time you’re in the clouds and the very big finale, especially if you do one of the big charged up [pings], you can really hear there’s a human voice in there.” (The human voice used in the pings is Lisbeth Scott, who sings Journey’s end credits.)

The humanity in the design of Journey , from the human voice in the chirps to the multiplayer design that encourages cooperation, is so much of what makes the game memorable for me. As I climbed the mountain with my companion the first time I played the game, I realize now that while I may have been huddled close to my friend to try and share my energy, deep down, I just wanted to do everything I could to help them get up that mountain — and I knew they were doing the same for me.

Ahead of talking to Chen and Wintory, I replayed Journey for the first time since it came out. Despite how much I love the game, I’ve always worried another run would change how I feel about it. I was so fearful of how it might contort my memories that I was actively procrastinating on playing it.

To my surprise, the experience was just as powerful. Ten years on, there are still people playing Journey , and I met four other companions who were part of my adventure. I even made a new friend who stuck by my side through the snowy climb to the mountain’s summit — and through the joyful flight to the peak.

My companion and I walking together at the very end of the game.

Journey is available on PS3, PS4, PS5, PC, and iOS. Composer Austin Wintory has also just released a re-orchestration of the Journey soundtrack performed by the London Symphony Orchestra titled “Traveler — A Journey Symphony.” I’ve listened to it and thought it was very good.

Journey TheTraveler

The Traveler - Our Elusive Hero

The Traveler is the main protagonist and player character of Journey . The Traveler is genderless and its name, age and story are unknown. The Traveler is a Rythulian , much the same as the cloaked figures and companions found throughout the game and in numerous cutscenes.

  • 1 Appearance
  • 2 Abilities

Appearance [ ]

The Traveler is made of cloth and sports a humanoid form. They appear to have no arms and have glowing eyes. The Traveler's default attire is The Red Robe. The Red Robe starts with no scarf , and its scarf's size and magic capacity increase with every Glowing Symbol collected by the player.

After collecting all 21 Glowing Symbols, The Traveler, if the player chooses to do so, can wear a White Robe . The White Robe starts with a longer scarf than the Red Robe's original scarf and, unlike the Red Robe's scarf, the White Robe's regenerates its power over time.

Abilities [ ]

One primary ability of The Traveler is that of chirping. This can be done by pushing the circle button. By holding in the circle  button you can charge a chirp causing the chirp's range and effectiveness to increase. Chirping is used for a wide variety of purposes. These are communicating with companions, activating switches and calling to the aid of cloth creatures . Also, a chirp will restore the scarf power of one's companion, if they are in its radius.

Another important ability used by The Traveler is that of flying. Provided the player's scarf is partly or fully charged, if the player pushes and holds in the cross button they will begin to fly. Flying is a fundamental gameplay element as it allows players to access otherwise unreachable areas of the game.

Publishing Year

Type of game

Born as the last title of a contract with Sony Computer Entertainment , the development of Journey required far longer than expected, taking over three years to complete. A troubled project during the making of which the studio Thatgamecompany faced delays, tensions and almost risked bankruptcy.

However, the result was a title that would forever change the idea of what a video game can be. Released for Playstation3 in 2012, Journey set a higher standard for interactive entertainment, and its emotional resonance made it unforgettable to all those who played it.

A beginning shrouded in mystery

Golden dunes shimmer under the blinding rays of dawn, dancing in the heat haze. A shooting star cuts across the sky and over the desert, where a lone figure sits among the sand, shrouded in a red cloak. Journey is the tale of a mysterious protagonist, as it travels to the beacon that is the mountain at the horizon. During this adventure the player will uncover the secrets of a long-lost civilization, as well as meet other travellers on the path toward the glowing peak.

The art of Journey’s game design

Today hyper-realistic graphics and stunning aesthetics have almost become a requisite of modern video games, regardless of genre. From Assassin’s Creed to Cyberpunk 2077 , visuals play a big role in the popularity of a title. And yet, many still struggle in conveying a unique message through it, discarded in favor of the entertainment factor. As a result, often the story serves as a frame to provide context, but is otherwise disconnected from the gameplay. This is where Journey stands out.

While the idea of exploring ancient ruins is far from new, the concept of the title is: a journey through life , expressed in a way that only video games can. Without dialogue nor writing, but through pure game design . A stylistic choice later used by other indie videogames, such as INSIDE and RiME . Paired with phenomenal visuals and incredible use of score , it makes for a gaming experience unlike any other.

In Journey there are no fights to face, and no choices to make. The mechanics themselves are few and immediate: walking, jumping and singing . Despite this seeming simplicity, the story of Journey holds a depth that has to be experienced. It manages to create a complete immersion during its short duration, without any inconsistencies to disrupt the narration flow. A good use of its limited mechanics as well as of the strengths of its medium, without overstretching itself. Instead, its brief but moving story is best enjoyed in one go .

Journey

Companions on a shared path

As the player moves their first steps in the game, they come to discover the magic of the cloth. By finding magical glyphs, the scarf of the protagonist will grow in length, the power imbued in it allowing to soar for long periods of time. However, another unexpected aid will come to the help of the protagonist.

From the second level on, the game connects randomly with other players, and a second cloaked figure will appear. An unknown ally with whom the player can choose to travel or not. A kind of cooperation whose limitations make the shared bond all the more meaningful. Because if musical notes are the only mean of communication, the flawless game design makes it essential and functional.

With this unique multiplayer function , a stranger soon becomes a companion whose presence enriches the game experience . One wishes to play tunes with them, share discoveries, and stick together through all the ups and downs. And while it is not guaranteed to play with the same person all the way to the end, it still heightens the emotional impact of the title. A journey that is started alone, but whose fulfillment is reached together.

Journey

An unforgettable emotional tale

In the end, this video game does represent a journey in itself, one that leaves its meaning open to personal interpretation. It offers something that few titles do: an emotional reward , not unlike Chihiro’s own journey in Spirited Away . The intent of Thatgamecompany to create video games that speak on an emotional level culminated with Journey , which created an in-game world where feelings resonate . And as the scenery evolves from scorching deserts to freezing peaks, so do the emotions evoked.

Even music plays a fundamental part, contributing to the beauty of the experience. The notes sung by the protagonist merge with the score, mirroring the actions in-game. Moreover, the soundtrack becomes more and more orchestral as the story proceeds, and when accompanied by another traveler new instruments join in . A clever use of sound design , also present in Gris .

And as credits roll, the track “I was born for this” plays; the only one featuring lyrics, five literature excerpts sang in five languages. From Beowulf to the Iliad , it is no coincidence for them to be all examples of the hero’s journey. The score thus ends as it started with the soft notes of a cello tune, a hint to the cyclic nature of the videogame . Praised worldwide for its emotional storytelling, Journey won several awards, including “Game of the Year” at the 2012 D.I.C.E. Awards . Inspired by the success and mechanics of this title, Thatgamecompany is working on a new mobile videogame: Sky – Children of the Light , soon available for Playstation as well.

journey video game companion

Video games have the remarkable power to transport players to worlds beyond their wildest imagination. While immersive storytelling, breathtaking graphics, and challenging gameplay are integral components of an immersive gaming experience, one underrated element can exponentially improve the game and it may even be the difference between a lively and a barren wasteland of a game: the companion.

These companions are more than just characters on screen, they become friends, mentors, and even saviors as they accompany us on our journeys. Let’s take a look and celebrate some of the best video game companions that have left a mark on our hearts and the gaming world as a whole!

1. Ellie (The Last of Us)

Ellie from the Last of US

The Last of Us , aside from being a great survival game with the perfect blend of a soundtrack, visuals, and gameplay mechanics, is also undoubtedly a masterpiece of storytelling, where Ellie, a young girl who joins our protagonist, Joel, takes center stage.

If you’ve already played the game, you know that Ellie’s transformation from a vulnerable child into a resilient and resourceful survivor is a sad story that unfolds gracefully throughout the game, and Ellie’s story was tackled even further with the Left Behind DLC.

So, what makes Ellie one of the best video game companions?

Ellie’s witty banter adds a layer of humanity and humor to the game’s usual desolate and challenging environment. Her striking thoughts and love for dad jokes not only provide moments of ease but also make us feel like we are actually bonding with her, creating a connection that goes beyond the screen.

Furthermore, at some point in the game, Ellie’s resourcefulness in combat makes her useful; she covers your back during dire moments and contributes to the overall strategy instead of being your usual damsel in distress. This give-and-take partnership with Ellie not only enhances the gameplay experience but also makes you feel like you’re part of the duo and not just the main hero carrying a vulnerable person. In some ways, Joel and Ellie’s vulnerabilities make them feel more human, and it makes perfect sense for the context of TLOU !

Overall, Ellie stands as a perfect example of a companion who leaves a mark in the hearts of players. But then again, despite all this, all she got was a sick lie told straight to her face (and a messed up sequel).

2. Elizabeth (Bioshock Infinite)

Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite

Remember her from BioShock Infinite ? Well, she stands out as one of the best video game companions ever due to a combination of factors that enhance both gameplay and storytelling and is a benchmark as to what a good companion is!

Here’s the thing with Elizabeth: after being held captive in the floating city of Columbia, she starts out as a character that you have to rescue, more like a Rapunzel story type of deal.

10 Best Bosses from The Legend of Zelda Series

The 7 best game boy games of all time.

As you travel with her, she becomes a companion throughout the game. She assists our main character by providing ammo, health, and even money. Plus, you also discover that she has this bizarre ability to open tears in space and time to access parallel universes. With this ability, she can get helpful items, seek cover, and access alternate versions of reality to help you in combat.

Other than being useful, Elizabeth is also very likable. While she comes across as naive at the beginning of the game, she turns out to have a kind and free-spirited personality that is unfurled throughout the whole story. But then again, she does have her mysteries that also get revealed as the game goes on.

So what made Elizabeth different from other companions? Well, I would say that she simply stands out, not just as the companion in this game. One could argue that she is actually the main character, but one thing’s for sure! There wouldn’t be a Bioshock Infinite without her. And it’s crazy to think that the devs were originally planning to scrap her due to how much work has to be done to create her; it’s a good thing they doubled down and invested so much more than what was originally planned, all to beat this next character.

3. Alyx Vance (Half-Life 2)

Alyx Vance from Half-life 2

This list wouldn’t be complete without Alyx Vance from Half-Life 2 ! She is regarded by many as one of the best video game companions to ever get pixelized on our screens, and all for good reason! Like with a ton of characters we mentioned so far, Alyx feels deeply human; she has an authentic blend of strength, intelligence, and vulnerability.

Throughout Half-Life 2 , players witness her undeniable bravery and prowess in combat, but also her genuine concern for her father, her playful and witty banter with Gordon Freeman, and her resilience in everything messed up with the in-game world. But what truly sets Alyx apart is Valve’s meticulous attention to detail in her animation and AI design: she interacts dynamically with the environment, responds to the player’s actions, and even conveys emotion without words, just through her facial expressions and gestures.

Overall, her blend of gameplay functionality and narrative depth elevates Alyx from a mere NPC to a genuine presence, making players feel they’re going through a messed-up world with a real, trusted friend by their side. All this safely set her as the standard of video game companions, at least until Bioshock Infinite’s Elizabeth!

4. Midna (The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess)

Midna from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

If you played Twilight Princess , you know what I’m talking about!

Anyways, the whole Zelda franchise is no stranger when it comes to companions. You have Epona, Navi, Tatl, Ezlo, and a couple more here and there, and perhaps the best one out of all Zelda companions, and one of the best in general, is Midna!

So, if you are one of the unfortunate people who haven’t met her yet, Midna is a mysterious and impish character who assumes a central role in the story of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Midna has this unique personality when you meet her in the game. She is secretive, mysterious, and manipulative. I kind of hated her when I first played Twilight Princess , but then again, this proved to add a touch of intrigue and charm to the game.

She often has this unusual, playful, and sassy attitude that proves to be a solid factor that makes your interaction with her even more memorable.

In terms of gameplay, Midna plays a crucial role in helping Link navigate Hyrule and even the Twilight Realm. She can warp you around portals, and she controls the ability to turn Link between his human and wolf forms. Now, her ability to change and warp Link proved to be another factor that sets her aside from the rest. Don’t believe me? Who would be your next pick for the best Zelda companion? Mine would be Ezlo and The King of Red Lions, both of which had abilities that you use throughout the game, making them more memorable than the rest.

But what truly sets Midna apart is her character development, and the deep emotional connection players form with her due to it. As her backstory is unveiled, players become invested in her journey and the bond she shares with Link, making her one of the standout companions in the entire Zelda series.

And, of course, if you saw the ending of Twilight Princess, you know the bittersweet feeling you get with what Midna did at the end of the game. I know I got that feeling from when I first beat the game over a decade ago, and I still have that feeling now!

Overall, her surprising character development and constant companionship and assistance through the whole Twilight Princess game cements her as one of the best companions in video game history, and I even think she’s the best in all Zelda games.

Do you wish for her to come back in another Zelda game someday?

5. Atreus (God of War 2018)

Kratos and Atreus in God of War 2018

Boy! The son of the bloody ghost of Sparta! Loki? Well, he’s known by many names, but one thing is for sure: he’s one of the best video game companions for me.

Some people consider Mimir to be the main companion in GOW since he’s always with you as Kratos, but I think it’s the other way around. Mimir can only provide information and even witty jokes, and aside from having the Bifrost, Atreus can do all that and more, especially when it comes to combat, all while Mimir watches from Kratos’ waist, no hate for him, though, I love the character!

The game starts with Kratos and Atreus being introduced (remember how much of a surprise that was back then?), then we soon find out that Atreus’ mother and Kratos’ wife passed away, and they were tasked to scatter her ashes on the highest peak in all of the realms.

This whole adventure also became a way for Atreus to prove himself to Kratos, who was very hesitant about bringing him along, thinking that he wasn’t ready for the challenges ahead.

Well, we all know what happened with Baldur’s visit, and so the father and son duo were forced to move on.

As with any good companion, Atreus has some abilities of his own, he can shoot light and shock arrows to attack enemies, activate light bridges, and detonate World Tree sap. Other than that, he can also summon runic animals that can either attack or stun enemies or get Healthstones or Ragestones from the ground.

Throughout the game, Atreus turns from an innocent child to a capable warrior. plus, he also turns out to be a smart, confident, and mature young man, even after that part when he momentarily becomes arrogant when he discovers that he’s actually a god.

Overall, Atreus made our journey through the Norse realm much more enjoyable, not only in God of War but also in the sequel, God of War: Ragnarok . It genuinely felt like seeing a kid grow into an adult.

6. Quiet (Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain)

Quiet, the companion from Metal Gear Solid 5

Now, Quiet is a controversial character to talk about due to her outfit, which barely covers a square inch of her skin, which caused a ton of people to think she was designed to be overly sexualized and is thought to be regarded as one of the best companions out there only due to her appearance.

Now, sexualization aside, Quiet is still one of the most memorable and most useful companions out there.

Here’s the thing with Quiet: She starts off as an enemy as she was tasked to kill Venom Snake, our main character. Eventually, you’ll encounter and get in a fight with her. Once you have her incapacitated, you can either kill her or take her back to Mother Base.

Before getting back to Mother Base, she’ll uncuff herself and pretend to have escaped only to reveal herself later on to save Venom, I think as her way of saying thanks for not killing her.

Now, after a bit, you can choose to take her on missions as a buddy. The way that MGSV works is there are 4 buddies in the game that you can take as the companion: D-Horse, D-Dog, D-Walker, and Quiet. Personally, I found Quiet to be the best companion out of the four of them. Not only is she extremely useful, but the more you bond with her, the more of her story will be known to you, and man, is it an interesting story, to say the least.

How useful is she? Well, she is a very capable sniper; you can either command her to take out enemies, or she’ll take out alerted enemies automatically. She also scouts the area, marking any threat she finds, and of course, she can also cover or draw fire away from you when things get a bit hairy.

Overall, Quiet is a cool companion, often having this shroud of mystery, and while she can incapacitate or kill almost anything she sees in the game, she does have her vulnerable moments that make her one of the most emotionally complex companions out there. And lastly, doesn’t matter what your reason is, whether it’s her appearance, or if you’re intrigued about her, or if you found her useful on the battlefield, she’s definitely one of the most memorable companions out there!

A good hero is nothing without an equally awesome sidekick

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

We love a good companion, not only for their capacity to breathe new life into an adventure, but for the way they are able to fold new context into stories and events as they unfold. Well, that and a little humor. The best video game companions are able to do all that and more, which is why so many of them are often considered to be some of the best video game heroes around.

When compiling this list of the best game companions, we picked those dynamic duos that have truly stood the test of time. Those partnerships that transformed otherwise enjoyable experiences into unforgettable adventures. So with that all out of the way, let's get into our pick of the 10 best video game companions of all-time.

10. D-Dog (Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain)

journey video game companion

Unlike every other Metal Gear Solid game before it, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is far more open and sandbox-like in its structure. This leads Punished Snake to venture into the throes of Afghanistan from a range of drop points, often with one of four possible buddies by his side, when undertaking covert missions. Of course, you could rely on the sniping abilities of Quiet to help you or capitalise on the fast-movement speed of D-Horse to make a quick getaway, but really it’s your canine companion D-Dog who proves the most useful – and not only because he’s a very good boy.

Relating to D-Dog is no hard task, mainly because you quickly raise him from pup to full-grown attack dog while on mother base and both share a fondness for eye patches. Out in the field he also serves as a useful ally, marking enemies that you might otherwise miss on the map within a 50m radius, sniffing out harmful landmines and, of course, attacking soldiers on command. D-Dog is simply the most versatile form of back up in Metal Gear Solid V, hence why he makes our list of the best video game companions.

9. Jonah (Tomb Raider)

journey video game companion

Being a new addition to the Tomb Raider mythos following 2013’s reboot, Jonah quickly imprinted himself onto the hearts of players as one of the best video game protagonists for how earnest and spiritual he is. Lara is continually forced to make tough decisions and perform gruesome acts throughout the course of Square Enix ’s modern trilogy, but Jonah is the gentle giant who keeps this legendary adventurer humble by helping her not lose sight of herself. He may have begun life as a simple cook for the Endurance research vessel, yet since crashing into the lost island of Yamatai, he has since remained one of Lara’s most reliable and honest cohorts.

Jonah plays a key role towards the beginning of 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider , asking Lara to question whether or not she is the catalyst for all the resulting destruction after she steals an important artefact from an ancient Mexican tomb. This leads to a fractured and prickly relationship between the pair throughout much of the rest of the game, allowing players to witness their bond slowly reach its original state. Jonah is the prime example of doing a lot with very little when it comes to video game protagonists, being clear evidence of a developer taking the time to make you care just as much about the people surrounding the always triumphant hero.

8. Elizabeth (Bioshock Infinite)

journey video game companion

Every Bioshock game might always revolve around a man and a lighthouse, but for Infinite this changed when the doe-eyed Elizabeth joined protagonist Booker DeWitt on his journey in the sky-high city of Columbia. She might be someone who’s spent most of her life stuck in the confines of a library under the protection of a mechanical bird, yet that’s exactly why she wants to make the most of her sudden freedom, aiding the protagonist’s first-person shooting antics by regularly throwing you health and ammo during gunfights.

Elizabeth ends up playing a much more crucial role in Bioshock Infinite ’s story than a simple victim for Booker to rescue, boasting immense power that allows her to shift realities, timelines, and perspectives. The beauty of this is that it also bleeds into gameplay, as well as just the story, as when you’re together players can phase unique tools into the environment, such as defence turrets and useful cover to help give you an edge in battle. Elizabeth is very much the full evolution of video game companions in the style of, say Resident Evil 4’s Ashley, acting as a big help rather than a hindrance.

7. Dom (Gears of War)

journey video game companion

From the outside looking in, Gears of War is a cover-shooting series that seems fairly superficial. You play as the hulking Marcus Fenix, seemingly infallible and always ready to kick some Locust arse by gunning legions down with his lancer as needed or getting up close and personal to saw them to death. Marcus is your stereotypical gruff protagonist, so thank heavens he had his trusty pal Dom by his side to help lend the initial Gears trilogy a healthy helping of humanity. It’s precisely because of Dom that the player never forgets what the Cog army is fighting for.

This all comes to a head roughly two thirds of the way in Gears of War 2, where Dom finally reunites with his long-lost wife Maria, only to discover that the Locust have left her traumatised. Dom’s emotional reaction to the situation resonates with our traditionally surly main protagonist, inspiring the pair and the rest of Delta squad to finally battle their way through the Locust tunnels and save the remaining civilians. The bond between Marcus and Dom remains one of the focal points of the first three Gears of War games, no doubt inspiring future heroes Kait and J.D.

6. Yoshi (Super Mario)

journey video game companion

Yoshi shook up the Super Mario formula by giving the titular plumber a trusty (and always extremely hungry) dinosaur companion to ride on. His first appearance came in Super Mario World, a game which most players consider to be the best from Mario’s 2D years. Yoshi played a large part in this, allowing players to move around stages much faster when obtained and making short work of shy guys thanks to the long reach of his tongue. Better yet, Yoshi is also a chameleon of sorts, coming in colours like red and white, as well as the traditional green.

It’s not uncommon for Yoshi to serve as Nintendo’s secret weapon, ready to spice things up in a pre-existing Mario series to help improve it. The dedicated dino obviously did this for Super Mario World where he first appeared, but also enhanced gameplay once again in Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Nintendo Wii. Alongside additional suits and powers, Yoshi’s ability to inflate into a balloon or illuminate the path in specific spooky levels helps solidify him as one of the best video game companions. And if that wasn’t enough, he’s been the star of several beloved spin-off entries.

5. Tails (Sonic the Hedgehog)

journey video game companion

It’s hard to imagine Sega ’s infamous blue blur running through Green Hill Zone, performing effortless loop-de-loops without his faithful flying fox friend trailing behind him. Because, despite Tails not appearing until 1992’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he’s become equally iconic as his arrival fundamentally changed the way players would approach Sonic games forever; especially those played on the classic 2D plane. He’s the rare example of a video game companion who made playing as Player 2 actually cool, largely as flying throughout such stages as Chemical Plant and Casino Night made hard-to-reach areas much easier to navigate.

Very much slotting into the younger brother archetype most players with siblings can likely relate to, Tails is always in awe of Sonic’s fearlessness whenever the two clash with Dr. Eggman. These wildly different attitudes don’t hinder either character’s appreciation for one another, especially since Tails can easily keep up with Sonic’s stark sense of speed and in some ways improving upon it by using his namesake to take on enemies from the air. Sonic has kindled friendships with many companions over the years, but no-one is yet to beat the original.

4. Mimir (God of War)

journey video game companion

In the lead up to 2018’s soft God of War reboot, we were all lead to believe that Atreus would be our sole companion on this epic road trip through the nine Nordic realms. However, having experienced the game in its entirety, many of us couldn’t imagine this journey without the dulcet Scottish tones of Mimir telling us tales of the times before. Also known in Norse mythology as the Smartest Man Alive, Mimir traditionally served as Odin’s advisor but swiftly finds more than he bargained for when joining the stoic Kratos’ quest to spread his deceased wife’s ashes.

The entirety of God of War (2018) occurs largely during one continuous shot, requiring several journeys by boat whenever you must travel a long distance. Any danger of these instances feeling boring or dull, however, is avoided thanks to the various stories about Odin, Thor and the rest of the Nordic gods Mimir regularly regales Kratos with. These range from the world serpent’s history, the flight of the Jotnar and many more. Mimir might lack every body part from the neck down, but his companionship only improves God of War’s worldbuilding.

3. Cortana (Halo)

journey video game companion

How do you solve the problem of the silent video game protagonist? By surrounding him with companions, of course. This poses a problem, though, when your main character is primarily a war hero who spends most of his missions exploring and shooting alone. That’s where the genius of Halo’s Cortana comes in. She might be an AI (as well as a voice companion for your phone), but Jen Taylor’s excellent voice performance has seen her swiftly grow just as iconic as Master Chief – to the extent that she’s played a crucial role in the overall Halo story arc.

Cortana herself is based on Dr. Catherine Elizabeth Halsey within Halo lore, being the person responsible for the SPARTAN-II supersoldier project that eventually went on to spawn the Master Chief. She serves as your trusty video game companion and intelligent guide to the universe, always speaking in your ear to keep you as the Chief informed, even when her systems are slowly degrading as presented in Halo 4. Whether you need a computer terminal hacked or a transmission decoded, nobody video game companion does it better than Cortana.

2. Clank (Ratchet and Clank)

journey video game companion

While you might not directly play as the eponymous robot throughout much of the Ratchet & Clank series, the latter half of PlayStation’s iconic duo has proved many a time that he packs a lot of punch. Not only is he the brains of the operation, but Clank is also what enables Ratchet to traverse planets with ease and is often the source for most of the franchise’s unique weaponry and gadgets. What makes Clank one of the best video game protagonists is his ability to prove time and again that size doesn’t matter, except in those few situations where it does and you get to control him in giant form.

Clank has become so beloved by fans that he even received his own spin-off game on the PSP in 2008’s Secret Agent Clank. And though not Earth-shattering in terms of story or gameplay, by any means, it at least proved how the small shiny android might handle himself whenever Ratchet isn’t around. Both Ratchet and Clank spend much of their time apart during the PS3’s Future trilogy, making it all the sweeter when the pair were finally reunited in a true reimagining of their origin in 2016’s reboot. Every Ratchet needs a Clank, and this partnership is almost two decades strong.

1. Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Uncharted)

journey video game companion

The most quintessential video game companion of recent years absolutely has to be Uncharted’s own Victor “goddamn” Sullivan, otherwise known as Sully. He serves as Nathan Drake’s cigar-chomping savant, always on hand to help the roguish hero successfully pull off that next archaeological heist in whatever part of the world its required. Sully’s thirst for thrill and treasure is only matched by his father-like love for Drake, as evidenced in the opening chapters of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, in which we got to experience and play through the pair's very first meeting.

Sully has remained by Drake’s side through thick and thin, appearing in every single Uncharted game ever released (even PS Vita’s Uncharted: Golden Abyss) whenever things go awry. He’s the ultimate back-up plan throughout all of Naughty Dog ’s globe-trotting adventures, pooling together resources even if it means getting into just as much danger as the franchise’s hero. You only need witness his several apparent deaths to reinforce just how much Sully has connected with players over the years. In many ways, this old geezer represents Nathan Drake’s humanity, always there to remind him what he’s at risk of losing by living a thief’s life. Respectable or not!

8 Games With The Most Companions

Exploring a new game and going on adventures with buddies is always fun, and these are the best games with the most companions.

While going on epic adventures alone can be fun, many players will find more enjoyment exploring various worlds with a couple of friends. These friends don't even need to be other players as many games have taken the time to create various interesting and compelling companions that a player can recruit to help them on their quests.

Related: Best Video Game Companions Of All Time

While some of these titles have a small cast of characters for a player to choose from, others have given players not only the freedom of plenty of other characters to get to know; some have also given players the power of creating their own companions. That's why these games have the most companions by far.

8 Mass Effect 3 – 8

Players have accumulated multiple different companions during their time with the Mass Effect franchise. Gradually, this has all built up to players having the possible eight characters – technically seven due to one dying in the first game while the other lives – that are available on the Normandy during Mass Effect 3 .

Although a player can't have all eight follow them around during missions at the same time; having so many great companions to decide from gives players enough variety to mix and match their team to best fit the purpose they need them to fulfill.

7 Dragon Age: Inquisition – 9

Another game with plenty of party members created by BioWare is Dragon Age: Inquisition . Many of the characters players can choose from are completely new to the franchise, while others like Varric and Cassandra appear once more to aid the player. Once again, the Inquisitor cannot have all nine members follow them at once, and therefore they would need to select only three to take along with them.

What makes Dragon Age another interesting title is the in-depth stories that every single companion has that allows the player to get to know them more. Not to forget mentioning that some of them even have a possible romance for the player to get involved in.

6 Miitopia – 10

In Miitopia players are free to create their own roster of characters to take on adventures with them. Allowing the player to not only create Miis that look identical to family or friends but also selecting a class for them to specialize in. Across their adventures with this 3DS title, players are able to make a total of ten companions, though once again only a few of these can be used at a time.

Related: Hogwarts Legacy: Every Companion, Ranked

Listening to these characters interact with one another while also taking them on an epic quest makes for an incredibly hilarious story that is only made better through even the side characters being Miis the player has also chosen.

5 Final Fantasy 6 – 14

Final Fantasy 6 by far has the most playable characters or party members available to a player in the entire RPG franchise. Players are likely to meet every one of these characters on their adventures with two of them even being a secret that the player will need to uncover.

Some of these companions will even leave the player's team occasionally where they will then once again need to be recruited. These may be the main roster of characters the player can have on their party, but there are still multiple other members that can be temporarily recruited by the player.

4 Baldur's Gate 2 – 17

Baldur's Gate is another RPG franchise with plenty of companions for the player to uncover during their adventures. As a player can have a party of six during their adventures in Baldur's Gate 2 , there is a large variety of interesting characters both in the base game and the expansions for players to get to know.

Each of these companions will require the player to first complete a quest for them to gain their loyalty before they will decide to follow the player into battle. Naturally, these characters also have their own morals that a player will need to be considerate of when making decisions with certain characters in the party.

3 Skyrim – 66

Unlike other games mentioned, Skyrim has countless followers for a player to recruit, though they can only have one of them following them at a time. This may seem questionable to some players, especially as there are so many to choose from. However, this allows for the player to form an even closer bond with their follower.

Related: Fallout 4: All Of The Companions, Ranked

While some of these followers carry more value than others, such as gaining their services through competing a quest line, others can simply be purchased in Inns for the right amount of gold.

2 Suikoden – 108

The main purpose of Suikoden is collecting a large party of characters even though a player can only have a party of six people at a time. While there are countless party members available to the player, they don't need to worry about collecting every single one of them unless they are planning on getting a certain ending .

Once again similar to Final Fantasy 6 , some of these party members may only be temporarily available to the character or only used in certain major battles; these still make them valid companions that the player may wish to pursue at certain points of their pixel adventure in Suikoden .

1 Dragon's Dogma – Countless

Out of all the games that allow players to have companions, Capcom's Dragon's Dogma excels against all other titles through the variety of companions – better known as Pawns – in this hack and slash RPG title. While the player can only make one Pawn, which is their most loyal companion, they can proceed to recruit two more that have been created by other players of the title.

As a player may assume, over the years with more players enjoying Dragon's Dogma , this has led to plenty more Pawns becoming available; some of them even carry an immense amount of power with them that a player will want to take advantage of.

  • 1.2.2 The chirp
  • 1.2.3 Your scarf
  • 2.3.1 To invert camera and/or controls

Basic gameplay [ ]

Please consider reading Basics Guides , if you are having your First Journey or just started to play the game. Those give hints and links to other helpful articles.

PC versions [ ]

  • it is recommended to start the game via the launcher (see Talk:PC Version FAQ )! For some people, it seemed they couldn't connect when not using the launcher.
  • Consider using a controller; if you are on keyboard or mouse, you might want to check "Controls" below or the in-game settings to see which buttons have a function.
  • Sand settings on low or medium look more grainy. Some people say its better than having it on high setting.
  • Medium settings is the equivalent to PS3, High = PS4, Ultra is PC exclusive and Low corresponds to Vita according to Flower but not the case here.
  • For reference: FXAA, Vsync, Cloth interpolation all enabled and MSAA 2x is the closest equivalent to PlayStation and iOS versions on PC

Common hints [ ]

Journey is rather self-explanatory. In the first level you cannot meet a companion , so there is time to try out the controls and chirp at flyers , those little cloth pieces that fly around certain places.

The first level ends after a vision and walking through a corridor.

The Broken Bridge (BB) level is the second tutorial-like level and the first place where it's possible to encounter a companion. The Banners and Flyers will recharge your scarf. Try different Chirps/chiming/singing at the Flyers!

Wildlife - Banner (Broken Bridge)

Cloth, in this case two Banners.

are like energy for you. On contact or upon approaching them, they will recharge your scarf and behave in many different ways.

Chirp

A Chirp bubble.

The chirp [ ]

Chirp is your friend. It is a tool used to interact with the environment and activate things in the game.

Read more about different Chirps, about the Symbol it shows and some trivia in the article above.

Longest RR scarf

A very long Scarf, gained through collecting Symbols .

Your scarf [ ]

See article: Scarf

Your Companion's loud Chirps will also charge your Scarf, if the sound bubble hits you (applicable up to a certain distance).

Your scarf is comparable to the health or stamina bar in other games. Keep a constant eye on your and your Companion's scarf and do big chirps at your companion if you notice their scarf is emptying/empty. This is especially important when trying to fly together.

Try to keep your scarf charged via mid-flight chirps at flyers, hitting banners, etc.

Controls [ ]

Journey is naturally intended to be played with a controller , since it came out first on a console.

The table below shows the standard settings for each device.

Play the PC version of Journey with:

  • PS4, XBOX and Logitech and third party XInput controllers
  • DualShock 4 natively and emulated
  • Keyboard and mouse
  • Keyboard only
  • Mouse only (not recommended as it is very challenging)

Warning: the game might crash, if the RT button is used with a controller through the in-game options (Dualshock is not affected)

Camera movements with a controller are naturally slower than turning around with the mouse. If you are having difficulties controlling your flight , you might want to try reducing your mouse sensitivity.

iOS touch controls are mostly self-explanatory (no dedicated sitting button)

  • Movement can be on left or right side, default is left
  • Jump, chirp and camera movement can not be pressed together and are on the side opposite to movement.
  • Top-left button is Menu/Pause.
  • For more Information about the iOS version see here: IOS Version FAQ .

Alternatively, you can connect a controller to your Apple iDevice. See: How to connect a controller to your iPhone or iPad.

The standard settings for iOS version are the same as PlayStation/PC and depend on the connected MFI controller

Default control binds, PS3/4, PC (DS4, XBOX) [ ]

To invert camera and/or controls [ ].

PlayStation: Press Start/Touchpad, options, then press select. You have to press it several times to circle through the options (only camera inverted, only control, both).

PC version: Enter the menu -> Options -> Controls. There are settings for camera: OFF (standard), X, Y and X+Y (both inverted).

Options and start buttons do more than you think [ ]

Select / Share / Enter will make you sit down and meditate . Also used to communicate and for tricks. Since it doesn't start the screensaver, it could be considered the "faster" sitting.

Start / Touchpad / Options / P will start the screensaver, moving right (camera) stick or pressing start again will bring you back to normal view. It's also a forced sitting and used for tricks. To begin experiments with pause button, try using the screensaver-sitting in the slide level.

Remapping for PS or PC [ ]

Knuckles ending explained: knuckles’ journey & sonic 3 set-up.

The six episodes of the Knuckles spin-off show are now streaming on Paramount+, complete with an action-packed ending setting up Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Knuckles season 1.

  • Knuckles' journey with Wade Whipple establishes Earth as a home for the Echidna warrior, finding a sense of belonging on the planet.
  • Knuckles' villains, G.U.N. agents and The Buyer, set up a thrilling showdown that ends with Knuckles defeating them and finding peace.
  • Wade Whipple's transformation into a braver character and ally hints at exciting developments for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, setting the stage for new adventures.

Knuckles is a spin-off of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 , with the six episodes on Paramount+ ending the show in an action-packed fashion. Since Sonic 2 's release in April 2022, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 's story has been highly anticipated. In order to make the wait for the third installment slightly easier, Paramount has crafted a spin-off TV show centered around Knuckles , telling a solo story about the Echidna warrior.

Knuckles ' voice cast sees Idris Elba return as the titular character, while Adam Pally leads the human cast as the returning Wade Whipple from the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. While many will question how much Sonic and Tails are in Knuckles , the show solidifies itself as a Knuckles-centric storyline. Journeying across the United States to train Wade in the ways of an Echidna warrior, Knuckles ' ending is suitably action-packed , expectedly hilarious, and even features some elements that set up the story of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 .

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will release in theaters on December 20, 2024.

Why Knuckles’ Journey With Wade Whipple Was Important

Knuckles' adventure with wade is a story about finding a home..

By the time of Knuckles ' ending, the titular Echidna and Wade Whipple had traveled to Reno, won a bowling tournament, and defeated the G.U.N. agents pursuing them. Concerning what the point of this journey was, it was to establish Earth as a home for Knuckles. After Sonic the Hedgehog 2 , it became clear that Tails and Sonic have acclimatized to Earth well. Knuckles quickly established that this was the opposite for him, with the warrior struggling to adapt to the more peaceful ways of everyday life on Earth.

Knuckles finally accepted Earth as somewhere he could live rather than begrudgingly stay to watch over the Master Emerald.

Similarly, a big part of Knuckles' story is that he is without a family after his tribe was destroyed. That said, through Knuckles' journey with Wade, he came to accept that Earth could be his home. Through his newfound friendship with Wade, his connection to Wade's family, the people he met, and the places he saw throughout the show's six episodes, Knuckles finally accepted Earth as somewhere he could live rather than begrudgingly stay to watch over the Master Emerald.

Knuckles Villains Explained: Who Are The G.U.N. Agents & The Buyer?

Knuckles' antagonists are connected to the echidna, sonic, and doctor robotnik..

The three villains of Knuckles were introduced earlier in the show; two of the villains are G.U.N. agents who wish to track Knuckles down and sell him to the other of the show's villains, The Buyer. The G.U.N. agents are called Agent Willoughby and Agent Mason and are played by Ellie Taylor and Scott Mescudi respectively, while The Buyer is played by Game of Thrones alum Rory McCann. Concerning the two agents, they are tasked with capturing Knuckles, driven by the money they will be paid for this but also their disillusionment with G.U.N.

Willoughby and Mason are annoyed that G.U.N. began allowing aliens like Knuckles, Sonic, and Tales to live on Earth after supposedly being an agency that prevents such instances from occurring. McCann's aptly named Buyer is the one who will be paying the agents to capture Knuckles in a bid to steal the latter's power. By the time of Knuckles ' ending, The Buyer is revealed as a former lackey of Jim Carrey's Doctor Robotnik, desiring Knuckles' power to exact revenge on the aliens that caused him to lose his position as a G.U.N. agent.

What Happened To The G.U.N. Agents In Knuckles' Ending?

Knuckles' ending sees the g.u.n. agents and the buyer face off with the warrior..

In Knuckles ' ending, the titular Echidna is cornered by the G.U.N. agents. This leads to a lengthy action sequence in a hotel penthouse in Reno, in which Knuckles faces off against his enemies while Wade Whipple saves his family. Eventually, Knuckles uses the power of two rings to defeat Willoughby and Mason , sending the two to an unknown location. The agents are not seen again by the time of Knuckles' ending, proving that the Echidna defeated them once and for all.

Knuckles uses a giant globe-like structure atop a nearby building to crush The Buyer and his suit, ending the threat to Knuckles' life and allowing Knuckles ' ending to be a happy one.

However, Knuckles ' ending then has The Buyer ambush Knuckles as the two battle on the streets of Reno. Sporting a massive exoskeleton that runs off Knuckles' power via GUN experiments , The Buyer quickly overpowers the hero. Wade Whipple then comes to Knuckles' aid, buying enough time for the Echidna to regain his strength, before he begins destroying The Buyer's robotic suit. After a battle, Knuckles uses a giant globe-like structure atop a nearby building to crush The Buyer and his suit, ending the threat to Knuckles' life and allowing Knuckles ' ending to be a happy one.

Wade Whipple Learned What It Means To Be An Echidna Warrior

Wade's journey is just as transformative as his alien friend's by the time of knuckles' ending..

Despite the show being named after Knuckles, Wade Whipple is arguably as important a character as the Echidna himself. Knuckles ' ending allows the warrior to come around to the ways of Earth, coming to call the planet his new home. Where Wade is concerned, the journey allowed him to become a much more confident, competent character as he learned the ways of an Echidna warrior from his new friend Knuckles. In Knuckles episode 4, Wade is shown fighting through his fears and becoming much braver.

Wade's arc then came to a head in Knuckles ' ending , where he came up against his father, who had abandoned him. Cary Elwes' "Pistol" Pete Whipple is cartoonishly evil as the show's bowling antagonist, but serves a purpose in that Wade confronts him for his mistakes. After proving his father was wrong to abandon Wade, his mother, and his sister, Wade beats Pete in a bowling competition. This, combined with Wade standing up to The Buyer after Knuckles was momentarily defeated, proves that Wade found his inner warrior by Knuckles ' ending.

How Knuckles' Ending Sets Up Sonic The Hedgehog 3

The next installment in the sonic the hedgehog franchise can include many knuckles elements..

Knuckles is admittedly more self-contained than many assumed it would be and has little in the way of explicit setup for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 . That said, several character changes, thematic elements, and small world-building aspects could be tied into the story of Sonic 3 when it releases in December 2024. Knuckles ' ending sets up Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with the Echidna now being more willing to protect Earth. While he swore a vow to protect the Master Emerald, his experiences with Wade could see Knuckles fight not just for that, but for Earth itself in the future.

The Buyer's mention of Doctor Robotnik also sets up Jim Carrey's return in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as Eggman.

Sonic 3 Has The Robotnik I've Been Waiting 4 Years For & It Makes Jim Carrey's Return So Much Better

Similarly, Wade's character change could see him be more of a direct ally in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 . Rather than just being a bumbling friend of Tom's, Wade could present his newfound bravery in a way that directly impacts the third film. Furthermore, The Buyer's Knuckles storyline indicates that G.U.N. has a lot of ways to harness the powers of creatures like Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 officially including Shadow the Hedgehog, it could be the case that the villain's powers are used to create a larger arsenal of G.U.N. weaponry.

Knuckles is a spin-off of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise created for Paramount+. Idris Elba reprises his role as Knuckles the Echidna in the action-adventure series, and the show will follow him on a new adventure as he meets new allies and faces new foes.

'tales of kenzera: zau' — a video game about grief, inspired by bantu mythology.

Vincent Acovino

Tinbete Ermyas

Juana Summers

Juana Summers

NPR's Juana Summers talks with game designer Abubakar Salim about the long journey of creating a game to process the grief of losing his father to cancer.

JUANA SUMMERS, HOST:

Creative director Abubakar Salim has always loved video games. That love was passed down to him by his father.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

ABUBAKAR SALIM: It started with my dad, right? He got me into them. He understood, you know, that games are an art form. You know, it's a great space to enjoy an escape from the reality of the world.

SUMMERS: But over 10 years ago, his dad died after a battle with cancer.

SALIM: And I'll tell you what, I'm still figuring it out. But four years ago, I decided that I needed to try and process my grief in a way that felt true to me and him. So I took the biggest risk of my life and threw everything that I had in making a game, a piece of art that honored him, an ode to the people we have loved and lost.

SUMMERS: That game, years in the making, is out now. It's called Tales of Kenzera: ZAU.

(SOUNDBITE OF VIDEO GAME, "TALES OF KENZERA: ZAU" )

SALIM: (As Zau) My baba, my father, your story was snatched away too soon. My name is Zau, shaman of Kenzera. Here, I seek my father, Shutan (ph).

SUMMERS: Abubakar Salim is here to tell us more about the long journey to bringing this new game to life. Welcome to ALL THINGS CONSIDERED.

SALIM: (Laughter) Thank you for having me. It's - I'm sorry. It's - I just I got to say it's very surreal hearing that back today (laughter) 'cause I'm very aware of how personal it is and sharing it to people. So it's - hearing it back is like, oh, man. You know, it just hits on another level. It's just so personal.

SUMMERS: Well, let's start there. I mean, this game is so personal to you. Listening to you at the Game Awards talking about your relationship with your dad and how much he meant to you and how much this game means to you - tell us a bit of the story of how working through your own grief with the loss of your father led you to this game that we're now able to play.

SALIM: Absolutely. It's a funny one - right? - 'cause I'm an actor by trade. So, you know, I've done, you know, "Raised By Wolves," "Black Mirror," you know, I'm now in "House Of The Dragon." Like, I've done - that's really normally my space. It was when I was in South Africa - I was filming "Raised By Wolves" at the time - and I was playing a game on my Nintendo Switch. And there was a section in Ori and the Blind Forest - it's this waterfall section. It's this chase sequence, and it's incredibly difficult to do. But I was able to accomplish it.

And the feeling that came through, this feeling of, like, kind of, you know, just happiness of actually getting through this thing, it sort of took me back to a feeling I remember when playing Sonic for the first time on the Mega Drive and my father watching me play Sonic and that feeling of actually completing this level that we just kept dying on. And it just dawned on me there that I had to make a game. Keep in mind I had no idea what it meant to make a game or how to do it.

SUMMERS: Right.

SALIM: But I was just so driven by this idea that the way to express my feelings, the way to express this grief is through a video game.

SALIM: (As Zau) The shaman's path is one of healing, one of guiding. Yet, how does a shaman perform his duties when he is the one in need of healing, of guiding.

SUMMERS: Let's talk a bit, if we can, about the story of the game. Just briefly, if you can, tell us about the premise of it.

SALIM: So Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is about a young shaman called Zau, who makes a deal with the God of death, Kalunga, that in exchange for three great spirits, he will bring the spirit of his father back to life.

TRISTAN D LALLA: (As Kalunga) And tell me, (non-English language spoken), what wealth is it that you seek?

SALIM: (As Zau) My Baba. A sickness plagued him. You have taken his soul, and I am here to reclaim it back.

You know, it's inspired by Bantu mythology and legends, a lot of the stories that my father would tell me as a kid. But truly, it's really inspired by the journey of grief that I had experienced having lost my father. You know, a lot of the time whenever I've seen grief depicted in an entertainment medium, it's always been quite sad and quite down and morose, and it's been a lot, right? Whereas, my experience was very colorful in a way. It was vivid. It was almost like these - the rose-tinted glasses were ripped from my face, and I'm seeing the world anew.

One of the biggest sort of shocks for me was that the world continued to spin. And as silly as it sounds, it was just such a shock. At the same time, I was also dealing with this idea of, OK, now, you know, my father has passed away, I've got to be the man of the family or the - you know, I've got to be the one who has - you know, who's in control of everything. That is where this game is sort of - where it comes from. The kernel of this game, it comes from my experience and my journey of grief.

SUMMERS: And I can't talk to you about this game without talking to you about the game's soundtrack, which feels really different to me.

SALIM: (Laughter) Yeah.

SUMMERS: What makes you laugh about that question?

SALIM: No, 'cause the soundtrack is so good, right (laughter)?

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

SALIM: You know, the thing - again, this is the beauty of working with someone who is so brilliant and just so talented as Nainita.

SUMMERS: So you're talking about Nainita Desai there. She's the composer for the game, right?

SALIM: Yes. Yeah. And what a composer she is. So, I brought Nainita on very, very early. Again, this was during the time that I - you know, there was no EA involved. There was none of that. It was just me, this idea and a team of - you know, a team of people. And Nainita just got it. You know, she understood what I was trying to say.

SALIM: It was very much this mentality of, like, you know, I want - it's my father, who was brought up in Kenya, and sort of him communicating with me, who was brought up in England, and having this kind of clash that makes sense, but also there is this feeling of, like, it vibes, but then it doesn't, but then it vibes, and then it doesn't. And for Nainita to capture something like that and not only capture the essence of it, but also capture that journey of grief, I laugh because it's so beautiful. So yeah.

SUMMERS: You know, I have to say, when we started our conversation, we started out by talking about how the roots of this game are in the grief that you had after losing your father. And yet, as I've had this conversation with you, I hear your laughter. It sounds like you have a smile on your face the entire time that you're talking about this game. How do you balance the two?

SALIM: I think because grief isn't always sad. And it's one of those ones where as long as you accept the fact that the grief isn't going to go away - you just have to, you know, almost accept that it is there. You get comfortable with it, and you could find almost, like, the sort of - the relief in it as well as the anger, as well as the happiness, and use that as a fuel source to keep pushing you forward. There's a beauty in this idea of an end, that the life that you live or that you kind of work up to or that you have is - there's so much beauty there. And grief really truly is a celebration of life. That's what grief is. It's the celebration of life, and I really do believe that. And I think, like, this game is that.

UNIDENTIFIED SINGER: (Singing in non-English language).

SUMMERS: We have been talking with creative director Abubakar Salim. Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is out now. Thank you so much.

SALIM: Thank you.
