KBS Tour 120 Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

Your driver sets the tone for each hole you play; but it’s your irons that typically get you to the pin.

And if you’re using the wrong shaft on your irons, you’ll be left floundering on the fairway. For stronger swingers that demand both precision and smooth feel, KBS offers the KBS Tour 120.

The KBS Tour 120 sits in the middle-ground between the heaviest and lightest KBS Tour shafts. These are steel iron shafts with a mid kick point that you can actually feel. But who should be gaming the KBS Tour 120 shafts? Are they the shafts you need to  land more GIRs? Let’s talk about it?

KBS Tour 120 Shaft Overview

As far as looks goes, KBS keeps things very simple with all their shafts.

The KBS Tour 120 has modest polished chrome finish with black lettering on a black background in the middle of the shaft. The KBS Tour series is known for offering players a smooth feel without sacrificing stability – and the KBS Tour 120 is no exception.

When you load up on these shafts, you get an active release that you can feel. But you never get the feeling that the club head is out of control. Instead, you get a smooth release even when you really load up on the shaft.

A lot of people tend to compare the KBS Tour series to True Temper’s Dynamic Gold series of shafts. But from our experience, the KBS Tour 120 yields a higher launch and is more congenial for players who have a sweeping swing. So the KBS Tour 120 is better for us mortals.

Why is the KBS Tour 120 So Popular?

Probably because of exposure.

The KBS Tour series of shafts are gamed by some of the highest-profile players in golf. But beyond that, the KBS Tour 120 is a great middle-weight option if you are looking for better stability from your irons.

How Does the KBS Tour 120 Perform?

One thing that we really liked about the KBS Tour 120 was that we were never afraid to unleash a 110% swing.

The KBS Tour 120 is stout enough to let you swing above yourself but it never feels noodly in the hands. The transition is very smooth with a mid kick point.

The launch is mid-high and the spin rates are average as well. The KBS Tour 120 also works with the player very well. We got the sense that the shaft was doing more than its fair share of the work, meaning that the energy transfer felt very efficient. Our testers were getting very good club head speed with these shafts and we believe it’s because of the active release.

Distance increases were notable as well. We were averaging 160.3 yards with our 4-irons equipped with the KBS Tour 120. Part of what makes the KBS Tour 120 still feel so stable is the stiffer tip section. All the action is in the middle and the tip stays stout on the release.

What flexes are available what swing speeds do they suit.

We tested the KBS Tour 120 specifically and the 120 gram version only comes in stiff flex.

That being said, the KBS Tour 120 was versatile and played well for almost all of our testers. If you’re swinging your 4-iron above 90 MPH, you should do well with the KBS Tour 120.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

Again, the KBS Tour 120 specifically is only available in a 120 gram version.

If you have an average iron swing speed, you should have no problem with this shaft. Even some of our testers who swing their 4-iron under 90 MPH were still getting good distance and feel from the KBS Tour 120.

Why is it So Good?

The answer to this question is surely subjective but for us, the KBS Tour 120 performs well because it’s stable and consistent.

Whether you’re really leaning into your swing or chipping the ball in from close range, you can expect stable and straight flight with this shaft.

KBS Tour 120 First Impressions

After our first few swings with the KBS Tour 120, we were impressed with the active feel.

The more we swang, the more we realized that this shaft is not likely to ever be erratic. After just a few swings, you learn exactly what to expect from it.

KBS doesn’t offer much insight as to what goes into the manufacturing process for the KBS Tour 120.

But to be honest, we don’t really care. What matters is that the KBS Tour 120 offers a controlled launch, straight ball flight and is excellent for players who tend to hit the ball low.

KBS Tour 120 Irons Review

The KBS Tour 120 is consistent no matter what your lie is like. It won’t make your irons ridiculously heavy; but it will likely add some stability. If you want to swap your graphite iron shafts for steel ones, the KBS Tour 120 is a good choice because the transition will be less jarring for you.

KBS Tour 120 Wedges Review

We were very impressed how the KBS Tour 120 shaft performed from the sand. It feels stable even if you chunk. You’re still able to make good contact and your ball flight will be more stable with these shafts.

The True Temper Dynamic Gold 120 shaft is a lighter version of the classic Dynamic Gold.  Same stability that good players require.

Introduction

Dynamic Gold is the undisputed king of iron shafts.  Every week it’s the most-used shaft on Tour and the odds-on favorite to be in the winner’s bag.  However, golfers at every level are migrating, slowly, to lighter shafts.  In response, True Temper designed the Dynamic Gold 120, an iron shaft with Dynamic Gold’s legendary stability at a slightly lighter weight.

The first thing that any longtime Dynamic Gold player will want to know is, “Does it feel as stable?”  The answer is, “Yes!”  The Dynamic Gold 120 lives up to the claim of having DG’s renowned stability , particularly in the tip section.

The weight difference between standard DG and the Dynamic Gold 120 is 14 grams in the S400 and 10 grams in the X100.  While the weight is removed evenly across the shaft, the difference is still very noticeable .  If you’re going to make the switch, expect to spend a little time working through the transition.

Performance

As you would expect, or hope for, the performance of Dynamic Gold 120 is extremely similar to Dynamic Gold .  I’ve played Dynamic Gold for the bulk of my golfing “career,” so the DG 120 was very comfortable for me.  I was able to control my ball flight, and I didn’t get any results that I didn’t deserve.

Compared to other shafts, the Dynamic Gold 120 is a mid/lower launching shaft with low spin .  It’s designed for stronger players who place a premium on control and can generate ample speed.

In testing Dynamic Gold 120 against Dynamic Gold, the one thing I noticed was that it was easier to produce my normal club head speed.  I didn’t see a large jump in club or ball speed, but I was able to hit my regular distances very easily.

If you’re a longtime Dynamic Gold player who is looking to drop a little weight, the True Temper Dynamic Gold 120 shafts are the perfect answer.  They sacrifice nothing in terms of ball control, but they make it a little easier to produce your normal distances.

I’m using the Dynamic Gold r 300 that came with my Srixon 545 irons . Buy far the best iron shaft that I ever hit. Personally I never thought I would even like them,or even be able to hit them . Now im a huge fan of Dynamic Gold .

I have the new Cleveland CBX wedges with the new Dynamic Gold 115 shafts in them and love the feel so I’m interested in these. I’m wondering though if these are just a repackaged version of the Dynamic Gold XP shafts that were on the WS FG Tour F5 shafts and some others. Not that that’s a bad thing, but I don’t want to go looking for something I already have in my garage. Thoughts?

Are you referring to the True Temper XP shafts of the Dynalite Gold XP? If the former, it’s a very different shaft. With regard to the latter, I don’t have enough experience with it to say one way or the other.

Hi Matt, I recently bought a set of taylormade 2023 , p790s. I decided to try kbs $ shaft stiff. To replace my ping I 200. And I absolutely hate them they feel dead. The pings have the dynamic gold s300 . I decided to replace the kbs with dynamic gold 120 s300 . Instead of my original DG 300 . I’m hoping this will improve the feel. On the mean time I’m back using my old pings I 200 and loving life.

I currently play DG S300s but balloon them too much in the wind. The DG X100s (TI) feel a bit too stiff for me though. Plus, I am 1″ over standard length in my clubs so I think the 120s could help reduce the heftiness of the irons. Will the 120s, being a lighter weight, play a bit softer than the DG X100s? Should I maybe consider DG120 X100s soft-stepped once? Thanks much.

Matt, I got fitted for the TT X100 in the TM P790 irons but just noticed there is a set for sale with the new TT DG 105 gram in a X flex. What are the differences in shaft loading, ball height, and stability? I was hitting my 7 iron 175 yards with X100’s

I’ve never reviewed the DG 105, so I can’t speak to that. I will, however, offer my standard advice which is to not second guess your fitting. If you were fit for X100 and you buy something else, it’s only going to take one bad range session before you start wondering if things would have been better with the X100s.

I always seem to get fit into dynamic gold x100 but i’ve never liked the feel, definitely too stout and lifeless particularly on knock down shots. Can you recommend any shafts to test that feel smoother/livelier and easier to play but still designed for high speed players for lower launch and spin?

I’d recommend trying the Nippon Modus 125.

I got fit for s300 last year do you think the 120 would still be a good option for me. I am trying to order some new srixon zx7 irons but for some reason I cannot put the normal s300 in them. Only the 120

I have a policy that I never recommend going against or tweaking a fitter’s recommendation. I know there are plenty of builders, such as Club Champion, who could build the ZX7 with the exact shaft you were fit for. If you’re trying to order direct through Srixon, I would get a fitting to find a recommendation for something they offer.

How would you compare the Dynamic Gold 120 against Project X LZ? I have a set of Callaway x forged 18 irons and am thinking about reshafting them.

Hi I’m hitting dg 120 in xstiff in my p790’s and love them. Currently playing my driver in 60g xstiff but not well. Any suggestions? Am I too stiff in the driver in comparison?

60-X might be fine, you just might want a different shaft. My advice is always to get fit.

any thoughts on having steel fiber 110cw in irons with these in wedges? I feel like weight wise would be a good transition. I’m not expecting fitting answers.

I have no particular opinion on that combination. I’m sure it could work for some players.

I currently play dynamic gold standard s300 but think I hit them too high and lose a few yards will the tour issue dynamic gold 120 help in this case

Just curious for those who have played both if there was a big difference. Currently hit the s300 fine but when fitted once it recommended the KBS Tour as well.

ok I see a test with the same head coming for me but itd have to be special for me to reshaft.  

They Make It Look So Easy

After playing DG S300's for over a decade I tried the KBS Tours in a set of Staff V2 irons a couple of years ago and just couldn't get a feel for them. For me they just produced weak, high flights and odd spin that I couldn't get a handle on. I went back to the DG S300 in the Mizunos I just bought and they feel like a comfortable pair of shoes. I also tried a PX 6.0 in the Mizunos and they felt similar to the S300s for me. I would imagine it is totally dependent on how and where you load the shaft in the down swing. My lunge and smash technique didn't work with the KBS.

Tremendous slouch.

As others have said, DG is about 10g heavier and launches the ball lower. KBS Tour is more of a low-mid to mid flight. Oh and it feels much better, at least IMHO.

i played s300s in my mizunos several years ago and switched to KBS based on recommendation from my fitter. I see higher ball flight with the KBS Tours and they do feel "smoother" than the s300s, probably due to them being 10g lighter than the s300s.

KBS Tour vs. Dynamic Gold; Must Read Before Buying.

What is my personal experience on KBS, and Dynamic Gold shafts? I enjoy Dynamic Gold and KBS Tour equally. While the DGs launch low, KBS Tours launch high. Hard stepping them will still give you the KBS feel but with a lower launch and spin if you need to slightly lower the flight with KBS Tours. 

While the KBS Tours hard stepped still launches a little bit higher than the Dynamic Golds, it is a significant improvement over the KBS straight-in. Though overall profiles are still very different, keep in mind that sometimes a shaft just depends on how it is loaded to function (or not).

I can say that during my fitting, I preferred the feel of KBS and DG over PX, etc. But after playing for two years, I can frankly say that I need to return to DG .

 I need to swing with KBS as smoothly as I can because I can feel my tempo slipping. With my KBS, I’ve discovered that toe misses are the most frequent. Due to my inability to afford the cost of a new set at this time, I am returning to DG in the same heads via resift.

The Tour seems to absorb the blow more than a typical steel shaft, which could cause some minor discomfort.

Conclusion..

I experience the DG as being stiffer and the KBS as having a stronger kick. The shafts I currently own are DG XP S300, which are, in my opinion, somewhere in the middle, feeling slightly stiffer than KBS but not quite as stiff as the DG. 

The KBS shafts might be a terrible fit for you but a good fit for someone else; it all depends on what works and feels the best to you. Just because they cost more and are considered a “upgrade” doesn’t mean they are any better. If a custom fit is not an option, I recommend hitting both shafts to determine which one you prefer, assuming you can tell the difference.

I also observed that the shafts come with various iron heads, which may affect feel and shot outcomes because they have various characteristics.

True Temper AMT Tour White Shaft Review

True Temper is a staple in golf shafts throughout the modern era of golf.  While the Dynamic Gold is as popular as ever, True Temper still continues to find new ways to give golfers fresh options to optimize their iron performance.  One of their more recent efforts is the True Temper AMT Tour White shaft.  AMT actually stands for “Ascending Mass Technology” – the shaft weight increases 3 grams between each club.  Out of the AMT family, the AMT Tour White is the low spin, low launch option with Tour weighting.

How Does it Feel?

Utilizing the same “DNA” of the classic Dynamic Gold shaft, the True Temper AMT shaft gets heavier as you progress from your long irons to your short irons.  What this means is that the AMT Tour White is lighter in the long irons and the shorter irons have a more traditional Tour weighting and feel .  I found the longer irons to feel noticeably lighter and smoother through impact.  The scoring irons are definitely firmer with a little extra heft to them.  What you’re really gaining here is that the short irons are firm, crisp, and responsive like you’d expect from a regular Dynamic Gold, while the longer irons have a similar feel in your hands but a lot less of a battle throughout the swing.

Flex profile seems to shift a little as you work through the AMT Tour White set as well.  The shorter irons feel firmer with a lower kick and stiffer tip.  As you move toward the longer irons, the kick moves a little further up the shaft and the feel lightens up a bit.  While the kick point does seem to move up, the tip still has a firmer feel to stay consistent with the set.

On-Course Performance

One thing to keep in mind is that the True Temper AMT Tour White is not supposed to be wildly different than the original Dynamic Gold shaft.  In terms of the shorter irons, I really found very little difference.  My trajectory, spin, distance, etc were all about the same as a DG x100.  The biggest performance differences came from the long and mid irons.   Frankly, I’ve always found the Dynamic Gold to be a tough play as you get into the longer irons.  My AMT Tour White experience was much different, however.  I was able to get easy penetrating ball flights with tight control.  The more player-friendly long irons made manipulating shots much easier.  I would say the AMT Tour White could be the answer to the prayers of a player that likes the control and flight of the Dynamic Gold but feels like they’re constantly fighting against the long irons.

Final Thoughts

Like I said, I think the True Temper AMT Tour White is a great option for the better player that likes the standard Dynamic Gold, but finds the middle and longer irons tough to play.  The AMT Tour White could solve that problem for them.  Having that same tight control but easier launch is a big benefit in the AMT Tour White.   Trust me, the lighter weights make a huge difference in the long irons.  As always though, our experiences and swings are different.  Make sure you work with a quality fitter first when considering the AMT family.

I can’t really make that comparison. They feel very different and the AMT Tour is lower launching on paper. I sort of feel like you’ve already made the purchase so just try it out, and if it doesn’t work for you, you know you like the KBS Tour in 120 in your irons so there you go. At least that’s how I’d treat the situation if I were in your shoes.

Are the AMTs an updated Tour Concept? Or those were constant weight but flighted. Similar though?

I honestly couldn’t tell you. Not familiar enough with the Tour Concept.

Any information/specs on the AMT Tour White S400?

I don’t but if you find any shop online that sells them, they’ll have all the specs.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find a shop. The only place I noticed that they are available is in Titleist’s Custom Option page. I reached out to True Temper but haven’t had any luck hearing back from them.

How would you compare in terms of stiffness to KBS? Does the TT r300play more like a S in a KBS?

Which KBS model are you comparing to? Are you asking if the specifically AMT Tour White in R300 plays to a S KBS (whatever model), or the standard TT R300?

Personally, I tested these in X100 and can’t really speak to the other flexes. I would also say trying to compare this shaft to a KBS Tour isn’t a fair comparison. Very different profiles and feels.

I am also curious to know if the AMT Tour White shafts are more weight sorted than the standard dg versions.

I don’t know, Carlos. I’m only working with the information provided on the True Temper website and the information on Golfworks. At this point, you’re likely better off following up with direct emails to True Temper to discuss their manufacturing and distribution processes.

No, the white ones are “tour weight”, not “Tour Issue” sorted. There is a Tour Issue AMT available with tighter weight sorting though.

what is similar to amt white s300 for KBS shafts. I’m looking to switch to KBS

It’s been awhile but I also think they’re sort of apples to oranges. Maybe C-Taper or Tour V? But I’m only saying that as they’re KBS’s low/low options.

I need help and looking for an updated shaft chart or recommendations.

Can anyone tell me the difference in $Taper vs. S300/S400?

I got fitted today, currently playing KBS $ Taper and they perform well. I was also fitted into DG 120 S300 and TI S400 shafts, all similar performance.

How do I know which to buy if #s are all similar?

I don't know which shafts to choose and I was hoping to learn more about each in terms of feel and spin and all the above or hear about other guys experiences...

My tempo is slow and smooth, Driver SS 105-110, I always play X in woods and stiff in irons.

Thanks for info. or help.

S300 is a flex ratings not a shaft, assuming you are referring to Dynamic Gold, there is a 10 gram or so weight difference between them and S Taper and that can be significant for many players. In the end only you can decide. Regarding ball flight, there won't be much difference for someone with a smooth tempo.

I've played $-taper 120s for the past year and really like them. I recently switched to DG 120s and I get extremely similar numbers across the board. The $-tapers might give me 1 more degree of launch...maybe.

The DG 120s are much cheaper so I'd just go with those.

Thank you both, yeah I did hit the 120s and old school S300s, all 3 were pretty close, not sure the advantage of any of them, callaway offers all free without upcharge which is nice. Thanks.

At least in theory and according to the manufacturers, the $ taper is supposed be be a bit more of a mid launching shaft with low spin since the C taper is KBS' low launch/spin. Both the S300 and S400 should be lower launching shafts than the $ taper. Also, it depends on what weight $ taper you choose. The 120g is stiff, 125g stiff +, and 130g is extra stiff. The S300 and S400 both play essentially as stiff flex, but weigh like 130 and 132g respectively I believe.

Weird thought, but for resale value, choosing the $ taper may hold more value since the shafts are quite expensive after market.

Ant regrets choosing the $ Taper? Do you think going slightly stiffer with the 125 S+ shaft would help with dispersion?

Sort of the same boat, torn between the DG 120 s300 and the KBS $ taper 120. Currently playing DG 105 s300 and they’re fine, but my fitter told me I need a heavier shaft and wants me in a 120.   7 handicap, swing speed around 90. Leaning toward KBS but also wondering if my familiarity with DG would be beneficial? Could use a nudge. Thanks

So what did you end up doing and how's it going? I'm also planning a shaft changs in my backup set, either $-taper or S300 120's.
