Cycling at Keukenhof and the Flower Bulb Fields of Holland

Rent a bike at Keukenhof gardens to cycle in the tulip bulb fields region of South Holland near Amsterdam.
Exploring the tulip and other flower bulb fields in Holland by bicycle is fun and easy on rented bikes on cycling routes around Keukenhof in South Holland in The Netherlands.
The beauty of Keukenhof and the flower bulb fields of South Holland draw visitors from all over the world to The Netherlands. Keukenhof may only be explored on foot but the surrounding tulip and other flower fields are best seen by bicycle. Cyclists can stop easily to enjoy the views and take photos without having to worry about too many traffic and parking restrictions. Bike rentals are available directly at Keukenhof or from rental shops and tourist information offices in nearby towns. Holland is famously flat, so wind (and rain) rather than any steep inclines may provide a challenge on some days. Guided bicycle tours , electric car drives , or even helicopter flights are fun ways to explore the flower bulb fields around Keukenhof. Buy skip-the-line tickets for Keukenhof online .
In 2024 , Keukenhof is open from 21 March to 12 May 2024. Entry tickets for Keukenhof sold out for the Easter vacations and some other sunny weekends in 2022 and 2023. On such busy days, tickets may still be available with transportation from Amsterdam or with other guided tours .
Keukenhof and the Bulb Fields of South Holland
Keukenhof, with some justification, claims to be the most beautiful spring garden in the world. This amazing flower park – famous for its tulips and other bulbs – opens for only two months each spring. It shows the best of Dutch horticulture but may only be explored on foot.
See Keukenhof Tulip and Flower Gardens for more information on day trips to the world’s largest bulb park and transportation from Amsterdam for the Keukenhof Express bus. Buy skip-the-line tickets online (€3 more expensive at the gate) and go directly to the entrance. Mobile tickets may even be bought for immediate use if the queues are long.
After visiting Keukenhof, it is fun to cycle in the vicinity to see the colorful bulb fields of South Holland. Bicycles – including tandems and children’s bikes – may be rented near the main entrance to Keukenhof or in nearby towns from tourist information offices or fietsverhuur shops, usually near the train stations. Guided cycling tours include bicycle rental and often transportation by train from Amsterdam too.
Cycling in the Tulip Fields of Holland’s Bollenstreek
Although every self-respecting Dutch gardener, public space, and park will have tulips and other bulbs flowering in spring, The Netherlands is by no means one big tulip field. Tulips grow best in sandy soil and therefore are mostly concentrated in the coastal areas of South and North Holland. Tulips and other bulb flowers are also planted in parks and other public spaces throughout the Netherlands and of course in private gardens too.
The most famous area for tulips is the Bollenstreek (bulbs region) between Leiden (near Keukenhof) and Haarlem (near Amsterdam). Tulips are also grown in other areas with the northern parts of Holland and Flevoland possibly still worth exploring when the southern regions are already beyond past their peak.
Although cycling in the bulb fields combines very well with visiting Keukenhof, it is of course not essential to do both on the same day. If not visiting Keukenhof, consider cycling a bit further north where it is generally much quieter with fewer tourists.
Cycling Routes in the Keukenhof Region
Most of the cycling around Keukenhof and through the tulip-growing region is on dedicated cycling paths or on very minor roads. Except for the dunes close to the coast, the paths are very flat but wind often provides a challenge.
Tourist information offices and bike rental shops have maps available with suggested routes. Ask the shop to mark on the map where the flowers are blooming best on the day of rental.
Rent-A-Bike Van Dam , which has a kiosk directly at Keukenhof, has several suggested routes (free maps on the website or at the kiosk) ranging from 4 or 7 km around Keukenhof to routes of 10, 20, or 35 km through the nearby bulb fields. Routes are easily adjusted – simply head toward where the fields are in full bloom.
Several cafés, restaurants, and kiosks welcome cyclists but carrying a water bottle is never a bad idea.
Renting Bicycles at Keukenhof and at the Bulb Fields
For a quick cycle through the bulb fields around Keukenhof, it is easiest to rent a bicycle from the Rent-A-Bike Van Dam kiosk directly from the car park at the main entrance to Keukenhof. (This kiosk is only open during the two-month Keukenhof season.)
The bicycle rental process is very unbureaucratic and for most bikes no deposit is required.
The bike rental at Keukenhof is around €11 for three hours (€16 per day) for standard bicycles and €25 (€30) for tandems. Child seats and baskets are available. The tandem is fun but heavy and a bit unwieldy.
If traveling to Keukenhof by public transportation and not on a direct connection, consider renting a bike in Leiden (15 km) or Haarlem (20 km) and then cycle to Keukenhof. Bicycles may be rented directly at these two train stations but other bike rental shops may have better deals or a bigger variety of bikes.
Flower fields are seen en route and it cut out waiting times for buses. Bike rentals are commonly done by day, so no money is lost while the bicycle is parked outside Keukenhof. Only park (and lock) the bicycle at Keukenhof at the dedicated bike parking spots ( fietsenstalling ) at either entrance.
A few tips when renting and cycling in Holland:
- Helmets are optional, but usually available from rental shops if desired. The Dutch only wear helmets (and cycling gear) when racing.
- A photo ID or passport and a deposit are usually required when renting a bike in The Netherlands (but often not directly at tourist spots such as Keukenhof or Kinderdijk ).
- Ask for a demonstration if unfamiliar with the locking mechanism – bikes do get stolen in The Netherlands.
- Note the closing time of the bike rental shop – the extra charge for returning the bicycle the next morning is negligible compared to the inconvenience of being stuck with the bike overnight, especially when sleeping in a different city.
If taking a bicycle on a Dutch train, note that a bicycle ticket is required (Fietskaart Dal — €7.50 per day) and it is only possible from 9:00 to 16:00 on weekdays and all-day weekends. Bicycles must be placed in the designated bike space — if none is available, wait for the next train. Cargo bikes and child trailers are not allowed on trains in Holland.

After breakfast, get on a trip through the oldest tulip fields of Holland, including a visit to the Keukenhof Gardens. In the afternoon, you ride to the city of Leiden. Dinner will be on board tonight. Post-dinner, we can all go on a walk through the town.
After breakfast today, we will ride out of Leiden and travel through Holland's 'green heart.' Visit a cheese farm near Zoeterwoude to taste and learn about cheese-making and explore Gouda, the famous cheese town where we visit the town's market square and the Gothic town hall. The main church of Gouda, devoted to Saint John, is world-famous for its stained glass windows. Post dinner, we can once again walk through the town.

We will bike to Purmerend after the visit, where we spend the night on the barge.

Is The Keukenhof Garden Worth Visiting?
Last Updated on March 27, 2024
Spring is knocking the door, and the gardeners are working day and night now to throw another visual spectacle for the millions visiting it this year. Yes, we’re talking about Keukenhof, the botanical garden in Lisse, Netherlands that hosts the world’s largest Tulip festival in spring. But is Keukenhof worth visiting?
Drawing from my personal experience of visiting the Dutch Tulip fields, I will try to answer this question. And if like me, you feel it’s totally worth your time, you can also use my tips for visiting Keukenhof to make the most of your experience.
The post contains affiliate links for tours, hotels etc. This means if you make any purchase through the links in the post, I may get a commission without any additional cost to you.
A Quick Outline
Is It Worth Visiting the Keukenhof Gardens?
On our first trip to Europe , I was a bit skeptical about visiting the flower garden of Keukenhof. We had a smaller budget and I wondered if we could skip the garden for something else. Coming from Bangalore, the Garden City of India, where i travelled to the Western Ghats almost every other weekend, what could another garden in a foreign city have that would overwhelm me?
Glad that I still continued with the plan. Because if you are planning a trip to Europe in Spring , you must never miss the Tulip wonderland of Keukenhof.
Here are the other top Spring-break destinations in Europe to visit in April and May .
Not quite convinced? Let’s delve into some compelling facts and figures to help you decide.
Footfall and Popularity: Annually, Keukenhof welcomes over 1.5 million visitors from around the globe, making it one of the most visited gardens worldwide . This high visitor count is a testament to its allure and global appeal.
Floral Extravaganza: The Keukenhof tulip garden spans 32 hectares and showcases an astonishing 7 million flower bulbs . With more than 800 varieties of tulips alone, the garden becomes a kaleidoscope of color each spring. Besides tulips you can also find an array of floral species here – blue hyacinths, daffodils, lilies, roses and more.
Cultural Insight: Tulips are integral to Holland’s culture. The tulip festival in Lisse is not only the best time to see the vibrant natural carpets of tulips, but also enjoy a culturally immersive experience. There are heritage days, flower parades and several events that happen during the Keukenhof tulip festival.
The downsides of visiting Keukenhof are of course the overwhelming crowd due to the limited time for which the gardens are open. Since it is open only in Spring (Late March to early May), you can expect erratic rainfall during the period.
Here’s a list of pros and cons, and subsequently, the costs involved to help you decide is Keukenhof is worth your time.

Pros and Cons of Including Keukenhof in your Spring Itinerary
I recommend visiting Keukenhof for sure if you are planning a trip this season. The vibrant colors, the sheer variety of flowers, and the meticulously designed landscapes provide a sensory feast that can’t be explained in words.

How to Get to Keukenhof & Lisse Tulip Fields?
Keukenhof Garden in Lisse is only 20 km from Schiphol Airport of Amsterdam. If you are visiting Netherlands from anywhere in the world, it’s likely that your trip will begin at this airport.
From Schiphol you can collect the entry tickets to the Keukenhof Tulip Festival as well as the bus ticket to reach there.
However, you can skip the queue at airport and buy the Tulip festival card online that includes Keukenhof entry ticket, Amsterdam city and region pass giving you access to public buses to Keukenhof as well as other nearby regions from Amsterdam . It also incudes a map and audio guide for the Keukenhof festival.
On the day of your trip board a train to Schiphol Airport, and from there, take the Keukenhof Express bus (line 858) directly to the gardens. This journey takes about an hour and offers a convenient, budget-friendly option.
Alternatively, you can also drive to Keukenhof. It’s a straightforward 40-minute drive from Amsterdam to Keukenhof. There’s ample parking available, but it’s advisable to arrive early during peak season.
For the more adventurous, renting a bike and cycling to Keukenhof is a delightful option. The journey takes about 2-3 hours and lets you immerse in the scenic beauty of the Dutch countryside .
Quick Keukenhof Tips in a Nutshell
- Follow Keukenhof Facebook page for the latest updates – the dates of the tulip festival, bloom report, theme of the year, ticket prices, flash discounts etc. They announce the dates in advance so that people can plan their trip.
- Mark the Dates! Keukenhof is a seasonal garden that is open only during specific months of the year. This year it will be open from 21 March – 12 May, 8 AM – 7:30 PM
- Lisse tulip fields are open all year, but the best time to visit is when the flowers are in full bloom, which is of course during the Keukenhof festival. Common consensus is it’s mid-April (when we visited). By May the tulips in the farms start drying.
- Buy Tickets in Advance. To avoid long queues, especially during weekends, purchase your Keukenhof tickets online in advance.
- Explore the Surrounding Areas: The area around Lisse is dotted with numerous smaller fields and gardens. If you have time, explore these hidden gems for a more intimate experience with the Dutch floral landscapes.
What is the Cost of Visiting Keukenhof?
Exploring Keukenhof can vary in cost. Options include a direct bus from Amsterdam or a combined entry and public bus ticket from Schiphol Airport. Prices vary, so it’s best to check current rates for the most accurate budgeting.

This place is a visual spectacle! Those flowers look absolutely incredible together making those rainbow strips! Definitely need to visit one day.
wow, tulips in Netherlands are so beautiful! I’ve always wanted to visit one of those farms, and Keukenhof looks like a fantastic place
I was in Amsterdam this past April and missed going to Keukenhof due to the weather on the one day I had available. Hoping to make it back to visit during the week to avoid the crowds.
I like your idea of a boat tour to see the tulips. This way you avoid the huge crowds. I often recommend a Potomac boat cruise to visitors in Washington DC to avoid the crowds at the Tidal Basin during the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
Thanks Terri. Yes boat tours also take you through the farms where the tulips are actually grown, instead of the curated garden which attract the most tourists
You’ve got some great fresh ideas for visiting Keukenhof! The boat idea is brilliant. I never got the chance to visit, but my mother loves gardens and she really liked this place when my father took her there.
Thanks a lot Teja. You too will love it
We have always wanted to visit Keukenhof for the tulip festival. It would be stunning to visit when the 7 million flower beds were in bloom. The crowds would probably be the biggest con for us. But we would get our tickets in advance and plan to be there early when it might be quieter.
I had not heard of the Tulip fields at Keukenhof. What a cool spot. Great tips! Good to know a day is probably enough time for the area.
You had me at tulips, next to red roses, they are my favorite flowers. I think fall colors can be specatular, but nothing like the burst of spring colors.
Wow… Do you really keep visiting European countries or live there? Your description and articles are so descriptive… Sitting in INDIA, you just take us to Europe. Kudos… Amazing
Thanks a lot Atish. My sister Sananda lives and works in Europe, and travels extensively. Most of these articles are credits to her, but this article is my own experience of visiting Keukenhof Tulip Festival.
