School Trips to Krakow

Krakow is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Poland , and a fantastic school trip destination for any class.

For a true taste of the authentic Polish way of life, where better place than the grand town square at the centre of the city. The square is actually the biggest medieval town square in Europe. It houses St. Mary’s Basilica, a gothic church that dates back to the 13th century and that is now surrounded by local marketplaces, restaurants and cafes.

There are also few cities that provide such a thought provoking experience of wartime history. Our history school trips to Krakow enable students to gain a real sense of what life was like for Jewish communities prior to and during the Second World War. This is an invaluable and unforgettable learning experience for all who visit.

If you’re looking to plan a Krakow school tour, feel free to have a look at some of our most popular options below or get in touch for more information.

Krakow trip highlights - our groups appreciate...

Auschwitz-birkenau.

Following the Nazi invasion of Poland in September 1939, Oświęcim was incorporated into the domains of the Third Reich. The town’s name was changed to Auschwitz and it became the largest concentration and death camp. Today, as a museum, Auschwitz serves as a poignant reminder of the horrors of Hitler’s tyranny and a guided visit will give students a fuller view of the terrible events and conditions, also allowing consideration of key study themes, including obedience, prejudice, tyranny and much more. A school trip to Auschwitz will be a truly emotive and thought-provoking one for students.

Galicia Museum

Presenting Jewish history from a new perspective, this private museum celebrates the Jewish culture of Galicia and poignantly commemorates the victims of the Holocaust through its moving photographic exhibition. During your visit, your students can take part in a choice of interactive workshops, including Choices Faced, Decisions Made: The Holocaust and Wartime Morality, Po-lin: Here We Will Rest (reflecting on Jewish history), and Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Jewish Culture (exploring Jewish belief and tradition). Groups can also take part in exhibition tours, lectures, concerts, and much more.

Meet with a concentration camp survivor or relative

Groups have the invaluable opportunity to meet and speak with either a concentration camp survivor or a member of a survivor’s family. This is an incredible, poignant chance to hear moving eye-witness testimony and gain first hand insight into life under Nazi rule. Common themes covered often include conflict, prejudice and the values of tolerance and understanding.

Wieliczka Salt Mine

With a labyrinth of tunnels, Wieliczka Salt Mine is an eerie underworld which has been hand carved from salt blocks. Located 14km south east of Krakow, here your group have the opportunity to view a section of the mine and 22 chambers connected by galleries. A fascinating trip.

Schindler's Factory

Also referred to as the Schindler Museum, this visit not only tells Schindler's story but covers every aspect of the Polish and Polish-Jewish experience of occupation in a way that is hugely relevant to British students. We thoroughly recommend this excellent museum, made famous by Spielberg's film, Schindler's List.

Krakow Old Town

Visit Rynek Główny (Town Square), the largest in medieval Europe, Mariacki Church (St Mary’s Church) of Gothic origins with its fine altar, Sukiennice (Cloth Hall) of vast proportions and view the University District and the Collegium Maius - the historic heart of the university area.

This historic Jewish district was left deserted as residents were forced by Nazis to move to the Podgorze ghetto. Visit the old synagogues and the cemetery, as well as iconic Jewish sites and museums.

In March 1941, the entire Jewish population of Krakow were crammed into this tiny ghetto as Nazi prejudice took hold. Also the location of Schindler’s Factory, students can explore the ghetto and consider the anti-Semitic events which took place here before large numbers of Jews were sent to labour and death camps.

Traditional Jewish restaurant

Enjoy Jewish culture with a traditional Jewish meal at a local restaurant, with a range of delicacies to be experienced, including czulent (bean casserole), knyshe (dumplings) and stuffed gooseneck.

In a fortified position overlooking the river and city are the Castle and Cathedral.

School Trips to Krakow

Educational trips to Poland provide students and teachers with valuable learning experiences that will transform your perspective on history, psychology and religious studies. Although World War destruction and years of communist rule caused substantial damage to Poland’s heritage., the ancient royal city of Krakow is still renowned for its cultural significance, and it is home to some of the most symbolic sites of 20th-century history.

What learning benefits do educational trips to Poland provide?

A school trip to Poland means a visit to the historical city of Krakow, one of the most significant places of the Second World War. Students will gain surreal insight into what life was like under Nazi occupation during this period.

The invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany in September 1939 led to the start of the Second World War, with France and Britain declaring war on Germany following the invasion by the Nazis. History students will get the chance to visit one of the world’s most symbolic and eye-opening historical sites at Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. They can also tour the Kazimierz Jewish District which formed the Krakow Ghetto, achieving notoriety as a place of starvation and disease.

For a deeply personal learning experience, your students can talk to a Survivor of the Holocaust. This could form the basis of a valuable case study for any student of psychology and sociology.

Explore more of Poland’s rich cultural history in Krakow

Preceding the 20th century, Poland has a storied history that spanned different eras of rule during the 18th century, when the city of Krakow was under Austrian control. The latter part of the 19th century saw Austrian control relaxed, with the country regaining its stature in 1918 at the end of the First World War.

During educational trips to Poland, you students will be fascinated and inspired when learning about these periods of history, and they’ll be able to marvel at the thousands of symbolic buildings comprising exceptional gothic architecture that have huge historical significance. Discover more about Krakow in our blog post here .

Students can experience the historical significance of trade and commerce during medieval times. Exploring the stalls allows them to observe the market dynamics and its role in Krakow's history.

Wawel Royal Castle

During educational trips to Poland, your students can now explore the site’s fantastic art museum, showcasing Italian Renaissance paintings and the largest collection of Ottoman tents in Europe. Students can also ascend the Sandomierska Tower and take a guided outdoor tour to learn and appreciate the grandiose architecture and gardens of the Wawel.

Students can delve into Poland's rich royal history, architecture, and culture. The art museum inside showcases Renaissance paintings, and the castle's gardens provide insights into grandiose architecture.

Discover the inspirational story of Oskar Schindler during the Second World War and learn about Schindler’s remarkable efforts that saved the lives of many Jewish labourers. Schindler’s Enamel Factory portrays life during wartime and the events that happened in the city at that time.

This museum is perfect for a history school trip to Krakow and educates students about the courageous acts of individuals during world war 2 and the moral choices made during difficult times.

Arguably one of the highlights of an educational trip to Poland is a visit to the famous Wieliczka Salt Mine. The mine was in operation from the 13th century until 2007, this cavernous mine reaches 327 metres below ground level. Students will love exploring the stunning carvings and vast underground lakes. There is so much educational value to extract from visiting one of UNESCO’s World Cultural and National Heritage Sites, regardless of the subject area of study!

On Krakow school trips students can learn about the historical significance of the salt mining industry in Poland and the remarkable engineering achievements involved. The mine's UNESCO World Heritage status also emphasises the importance of preserving cultural and historical landmarks.

Top tips from our travel experts.

"Krakow is a beautiful city with very friendly residents who create a safe and hospitable atmosphere. Exploring the dark, emotional history of the area is a must for anyone who visits. A half-day visit to Auschwitz/Birkenau is our top essential suggestion as well as meeting with a holocaust survivor which is an amazing opportunity. However, this if not always possible, so instead we can sometimes offer a meeting with a sympathiser who assisted the Jews during the war to give their unique first-hand historical account. If visiting in the winter, be prepared it is very cold and you do spend a lot of time outdoors and even in the summer at the Salt Mines, which is a must see, you will need a coat as 15 degrees all year round down there. In the evening bowling and water parks are cheap evening activities and in winter going to an ice hockey game is a fun night out."
