10 advantages of train travel

Discover 10 advantages of train travel and why travelling by train may be the perfect option for your next adventure.

Over the years we have travelled extensively through Europe and the UK by train and loved every minute of it. Both myself and my husband have an ever-increasing train journey bucket list and dream of travelling overland from Singapore to London one day.

So what are the benefits of using the railway and embarking on a train travel adventure? What advantages are there to travelling by train and why do we believe it is the best way to travel the world?

In this article discover 10 reasons to take the train for your next travel adventure.

It is eco-friendly

Your holiday starts the minute you board the train, it is a comfortable way to travel, better food and drink options, you arrive in the heart of the city, you can stay connected (wifi), it is a more sociable environment, great option for slow travel, take more luggage (or not) and keep it with you, sleeper trains are great, it is a safe(r) way to travel, where to book your tickets, 🚆 more train travel inspiration.

In many ways taking the train is a more sustainable and eco-friendly form of transport than either cars or airplanes. They use 30% less energy than cars and 20% less than planes per passenger miles. (1) Throughout the world train operators are constantly exploring ways of making travelling by train a highly sustainable form of transportation.

Trains produce less noise, use less energy and are much more sustainable in terms of CO2 emissions so the green option will always be to take the train!

train tracks

No hanging around for 3 hours at the airport. Arrive at the train station and board your train! Even if you are on a sleeper service the check-in time is not as long or as unpleasant as the airport.

And whilst your vacation only starts when you step off the plane the train journey is part of the holiday! Sit back relax and enjoy the views. Instead of endless empty skies you can enjoy the passing countryside and beautiful views as you travel which is impossible when flying or driving and concentrating on the road.

Waiting at a train station with a suitcase

This is one of my main reasons I take the train – it is so much more comfortable and spacious than driving or flying. Crammed into a metal tube in the sky with a few hundred other people with recycled air and limited leg room is my idea of hell.

On a train there are no seat belts – you can get up, walk along the carriages and often alight at stations along the way for a stroll. In some more luxurious trains there are parlour cars, dining cars and even cinemas available during your journey.

First class travel is often a cheaper option than a first-class plane ticket (of course there are exceptions to this when it comes to some of the world’s most luxurious rail journeys.)

Enjoy natural daylight through large windows made for viewing the passing sights. No small portholes with shutters and strip lighting on trains!

And if you travel with children the space and comfort of a train is always going to be more child-friendly than the cramped confines of a plane. Car journeys can be stressful too with bored kids constantly asking how far to go/how much longer.

Reading on a train

On some train journeys (and definitely on the more luxurious options) food and drink can be fantastic. Dining rooms with china plates and silver cutlery greatly improve airline food. (Though I hear that those who can afford first-class air travel do experience this luxury!)

Even on regular train services restaurants or buffet cars will offer more variety than ever can be possible on a plane.

A couple enjoying s meal on a train just one of the advantages of train travel

Most city train stations are situated in the centre of town . No transfers are necessary from airports which are often situated far out of town.  Arrive in comfort and step off the train straight to your destination.

And with no car you are not contributing to the major traffic problems in most cities. Take an uber/taxi/tram with no worries about driving in the middle of an unfamiliar city or trying to park. Having seen the way they drive in Rome and Paris I would never consider it.

Couple beside a train

While some airlines are now introducing wifi options on some of their routes it is still not easy to stay connected when you are miles up in the sky.

The availability of wifi (or even the ability to use your own data) is not such an issue when you are on a train (though I know this will greatly depend on where in the world you are!)

A woman using a mobile phone just one of the advantages of train travel

I have always found train travel a more social experience than travelling by air. There were so many times on our backpacking holidays around Europe when people would strike up a conversation/offer food particularly when travelling with my daughter.

I have met some amazingly interesting people on trains – from the Mennonites who boarded our sleeper train in Seattle to the transvestite with a pet poodle I shared a carriage with on a trip from Milan to Venice .

Family catching a train

If you don’t need to rush your trip then catching a train and enjoying a slower speed of travel to your destination is fantastic. This is how I dream of travelling the world – one train journey at a time. In fact, if there was a way to travel around the world totally by train I would be working towards that!

I know in these times of limited holidays slow travel is a luxury but if you have the time I say TAKE THE TRAIN!

Do you struggle to fit everything you need into 20 kgs of luggage? Take the train and you can have as much luggage as you want! Though I do always advise that if you are planning to change trains think carefully about how you will manage if you have lots of cases!

TRAVEL TIP – If you are planning to visit Venice on your train journey try to book a hotel near the railway station – that way you won’t have to struggle across bridges or on and off water taxis!

Luggage beside a train

I love night trains and have taken quite around the world including the Amtrak Coast Starligh t. If sleeping on an airplane is an impossibility take the sleeper train and pay for a compartment. Wake up refreshed when you arrive at your destination rather than tired and dehydrated after an overnight plane journey.

Although I have been on some bouncy train journeys I would rather be woken by the creak of a train than by turbulence at 38 000 feet!

Conditions are generally more comfortable compared to a flight with some train compartments equipped with double beds, toilets and on some luxury train journeys a bath!

Although statistically, rail travel is not as safe as air travel it is less anxiety-provoking! I know many people with a phobia of flying but have yet to meet anyone afraid of train travel!

Plan your train journeys around the world

So now that I have convinced you of the benefits of train travel why not plan that trip and book your tickets. Below are links to check out prices and book tickets for travel in the UK and Europe.

In Europe, I recommend booking train tickets through the Omio. The website is easy to use and in English so no confusion dealing with a variety of languages.

I recommend downloading the app to store e-tickets on a phone. Use the app to enable the easy purchase of train tickets on the go.

If you are planning a lot of train travel around Europe you may find that the most economical way to do this is to purchase a Eurail or Interrail ticket.

The type of ticket you will require will depend on your normal country of residence – the Eurail Pass is for non-European citizens or residents while the Interrail Pass is for European citizens and residents.

  • What is a Eurail pass?

A Eurail Pass is an  all-in-one train ticket  giving you flexible access to most trains across Europe. Unlike traditional train tickets, with Eurail you can go wherever you want, whenever you want. Some trains do ask you to make a reservation, but most trains can be boarded as easily as flashing your Pass.

Click here for more information about Eurail tickets (non-European citizens or residents)

  • What is an Interrail Pass?

The Interrail Pass is a paper train ticket that allows travel on almost all trains in Europe including 40 railway and ferry companies in 33 countries.

For train travel in Asia, I recommend 12goAsia

Book through 12goAsia for instant seat confirmation not only for trains but also for buses, ferries, and flights.

Taking the train has long been popular in Europe — it’s almost considered a rite of passage for young backpackers. But while trains have been under-appreciated in the U.S., they’re gaining popularity here as well. Amtrak ferried 31.6 million passengers around the country in its last fiscal year, an all-time record for the railroad. With the economy still slumping, train travel is looking increasingly attractive to budget-conscious travelers. Plus, a scenic train ride can even be a vacation in itself. Need more reasons to take the train? You’ve come to the right place.

1. Money Savings

Trains are an increasingly cost-effective alternative to planes, particularly if you’re going a relatively short distance or if you’re traveling in the busy Northeast Corridor, where train service is fast and frequent.

While some rates are quite competitive ($104 on the train vs. $108 by plane between New York and Boston in a recent search), you’ll sometimes see dramatic fare differences. For instance, we found a $134 roundtrip fare on Amtrak between New York and Montreal, as compared to $294 for the cheapest roundtrip airfare. The train ride will be longer than the corresponding flight, but for travelers looking to cut costs, the train often wins out — and you’ll get to see some scenery along the way.

Unlike airlines, Amtrak and other rail operators often give discounts to children, seniors, students, AAA members, military personnel and other key demographics.

2. Stable Fares

Anyone who’s agonized over when to purchase airfare knows how arcane and frustrating the airlines’ pricing structures can be. (We’re still waiting for a logical explanation of why a one-way ticket often costs so much more than a round trip. Anyone? Anyone?) Train fares tend to be the same day after day on any particular route, whether it’s Monday or Saturday, April or August, two months in advance or two days before departure. While some increases may occur (particularly at peak times or over the holidays) and occasional sales may be available, you can usually count on the stability of train fares, even at the last minute.

3. Flexibility

While many long-haul trains require reservations, many short trips don’t, so you can simply show up at the station the day of your trip and grab a ticket for the next train — without paying an exorbitant last-minute fare.

4. More Baggage…

These days, nearly all the major airlines charge travelers a fee to check a bag or two — and a few (Spirit, Alligiant, Frontier) now charge for carry-on bags as well. Compare these stingy policies to Amtrak’s baggage allowance: two carry-on items up to 50 pounds each (as well as personal items such as purses, strollers and diaper bags) and up to four checked bags up to 50 pounds each, the first two of which are free. Third and fourth checked bags cost $20 each.

In short, Amtrak allows you to bring 200 pounds of luggage — plus personal items — for free. Try bringing that on a plane!

5. …Less Hassle

Imagine taking a trip and not having to arrive two hours early, wait in a long security line, take off your shoes for inspection, or ration out your liquids and gels. Welcome to the world of train travel. In most cases you can arrive 30 minutes ahead of time and walk straight to your platform.

6. Door-to-Door Convenience

Unlike airports, most major train stations are located right downtown in the heart of the cities they serve. Instead of taking an expensive airport cab ride from miles outside of town, you can step off your train and be just moments from your hotel.

7. Eco-Friendliness

Trains are more energy-efficient per passenger mile than planes or cars, making them one of the most eco-friendly transportation options around (short of walking or riding your bike !). Carbon emissions from trains are less damaging to the environment than those of airplanes because train emissions are not released directly into the upper atmosphere. As a bonus, the relative energy-efficiency of trains means that the industry is less vulnerable to increases in fuel prices — making train fares more stable in an unstable economy.

8. Old-Fashioned Charm

There’s something refreshingly traditional about taking a train, particularly if you’re traveling over a long, multi-night route. The days of silverware and fine china in coach class may be long gone in the airline industry, but on overnight trains you’ll still find dining cars with full-service meals and uniformed wait staff. During the day, many train travelers choose to read books, play cards or simply enjoy the scenery rushing by.

9. Comfort and Relaxation

Rather than cramming yourself into an ever-shrinking airplane seat or squinting at road signs trying to figure out where to make your next turn, why not relax on a train? It’s one of the least stressful forms of transportation out there: someone else does the driving, you’ll have more legroom than you would on an airplane and you’ll be able to move around at will — not just when the captain turns the seatbelt sign off.

10. Beyond Just Transportation

Unlike airplanes, which whisk you from point A to point B with barely a glimpse of what’s in between, a train ride can be a destination in and of itself. Consider the California Zephyr, a dramatic route that wends its way through the Rocky and Sierra Nevada Mountains from Chicago to San Francisco. A ride on this popular Amtrak service offers spectacular scenery. During fall foliage season, try a ride on the Ethan Allen Express from New York to Vermont and enjoy the autumn colors.

Traveling By Trains: Great Way to Save or New Ege of Tourism by Rail

Last Updated on March 1, 2024

Table of Contents

Times don’t always remain the same, quite obviously. The times when tourism and travel were all seen as a great luxury and was a bigger deal is when the rail and its services were much more valued. New travelers tend to look for new experiences, new adventures and new demands and open from travel from Moscow to St Petersburg by Sapsan train .

This is what new tourism is. In search of the new system of travel, the new system has been broken down. However, this is the type of things youngsters may think and that is why the concept needs to be made clear. Traveling through train is one of the many luxuries which is still valued by many of those who understand its importance.

Many of the travelers tend to love exploring the opportunities. They can also contribute to eco-friendly traveling and displaying respect for the overall culture of the host nations.

Travel through trains isn’t considered the main mode of transportation the way they were actually considered in the late 19 th century. However, the passenger trains are still known to be regularly traversing the North American continents and the European continents. It is important to understand the importance and pleasure that train traveling holds.

They can help create a new trend of going back to traveling in comfort instead of seeking luxury. Train travel tends to offer many advantages over road trips and flights. Before you make a decision, make sure you consider the following points.

Sightseeing

travel train benefits

If you consider traveling through a train, you’ll be able to see and experience the serene beauty and pleasant environment of the countryside where you pass by. This is a great way through which you can get a feel for the landscape and nature. This is almost impossible to do due to flying over 30,000 feet above the view which needs to be seen for a soulful feeling.

Driving a car, on the other hand, would require you to keep your eyes on the road, so where is the fun in that?

Train transport is known to be pretty much cheaper than buying an airline ticket or traveling by road in your car which would require not only extra gas or petrol but also service and in case of a problem you’d have to bear the additional costs. Booking a train at night would also help you save money, as you won’t get into the hassle of making too many stops or staying in a hotel for a short amount of time.

Environment

travel train benefits

As mentioned above, transportation through a train tends to have a positive effect on you and is the dream of an ecologically conscious traveler. Riding a train would help you contribute to fewer carbon emissions and also you won’t be a part of gridlock cars on the roads.

Flexibility

Trains tend to make some stops in between, normally at the major destinations and the landmarks en route to the final stop. These major destinations would surely be on your list and won’t be in the way of you reaching your destination of baring any extra or additional costs. In case of you having you disembarking or embarking pass, it would be easy for you to see and roam various cities and towns along the way.

This is like a dream come true for passionate and spontaneous travelers, who don’t like just sticking to their bucket list but dream outside of it too.

travel train benefits

The seating within a train and the private cabins tends to be more comfortable, spacious and easy to stay at for almost everyone. It is a lot more comfortable than the small and limited space offered in the airplanes and automobiles. The modern trains also include the seats in a fully horizontal position.

If you want to have to full comfortable and better train experience, you can book a seat from the doors at either one end of the train. This helps you experience a peaceful time without any disturbances due to the strolling and passing of the passengers.

This is something that many people tend to agree with as airplanes tend to be more threatened while security issues going on. Trains are considered to be relatively safe and secure. They are guarded and security personnel is present hence you would be saved from waiting in lone security ques.

There wouldn’t be any intensive baggage screening either which would help save time.

Extra baggage

travel train benefits

It is pretty normal for many of the airlines to charge travelers a fee to check a bag or two. Many have also started charging for the carry-on bags too. If you compare these useless and expensive policies to another baggage allowance, then you’ll know you are able to have two carry-on items which can be up to 50 pounds each.

Not much hassle

If you are taking a trip your period of exhaustion and waiting takes place before it even starts. You would have to come to the airport about two hours early and have to wait in the long and sweaty queues for security checking. You may even have to show your luggage which you packed and take off some clothing items due to security issues.

Trains are better in this case, as this type of time isn’t taken in the security check and there isn’t any pre-trip exhaustion involved. Mostly you have to arrive just 30 minutes before and walk straight to the platform.

Door to door convenience

travel train benefits

Most train stations are located where the majority of the population is, i.e. mostly right down in the heart of the cities. This makes it easier for the people who live a little remotely far to reach as it lies midway. Instead of traveling to the airport before your actual travel takes place, you can rest and make your whole travel situation easier by getting to the places on time.

Eco-friendly

Another important thing to know about trains is that they are more energy-efficient than cars and airplanes. Hence, this makes the trains a lot more eco-friendly. As mentioned before, the carbon emissions tend to be really harmful, but the ones from the trains are a lot less damaging than the ones from other transports.

This is because train emissions aren’t released directly into the upper atmosphere.

Trains tend to have an old-fashioned charm to them

travel train benefits

As train travel was popular and considered the typical form of travel in the antique times, it still is known to be traditional and a refreshing method of transport. Especially if you are traveling for a long period of time, it is important to consider traveling through trains as it would help you be comfortable and less nauseous than planes or road trips. In overnight train travels, you’ll be able to find all the comfort, food and dining experience that one would require, especially for the long travels.

In the day, you can spend your time doing what you want.

Is Train Travel Right for You?

travel train benefits

Ken Paul / Getty Images

Train travel is becoming ever more popular. Amtrak , the US national passenger rail company, reports that ridership continues to grow each year. The UK's Office of Rail Regulation's statistics show similar increases in both passenger kilometers and numbers of passenger journeys. There is every reason to believe train travel will continue to attract more passengers as airfares climb, airport security lines grow longer and travelers consider alternate modes of transportation.

Statistics aside, the question for vacationers is, "Should I travel by train instead of by air, bus or car?" The answer depends not only on your budget but also on your destination, desired comfort level, and itinerary.

As you plan your vacation, you will need to consider the pros and cons of train travel before you decide how you will get from place to place. Here are some factors to keep in mind.

Train travel is fast and direct between major cities, especially in countries with high-speed rail systems.

When you travel by train, you can truly relax. You are not navigating the autobahn or driving a manual transmission Fiat on the "wrong" side of the road, so you can watch the scenery go by, take a nap or read a book.

Train travel is fun. Who doesn't feel a thrill at the sight and sound of a powerful locomotive pulling into the station?

It is relatively easy to book a train trip. In many countries, you can book your tickets online instead of going to a train station to buy them.

If you will be in the same region or country for an extended period of time, you can save money by buying rail passes. Many passenger rail companies offer a huge variety of rail passes, including weekend and family passes. Some rail companies also offer senior discounts on rail passes and regular tickets.

For solo travelers or couples, traveling by train can be much less expensive than renting a car in another country, particularly when you factor in the cost of parking, fuel and tolls.

You don't have to park your train. If you are visiting large cities during your trip, figuring out where to park affordably and safely can be a real hassle, not to mention an unnecessary expense.

Traveling by train is an excellent way to meet locals and find out more about the places you are visiting.

Disadvantages

Train schedules may not match your preferred travel times and days, so you might have to adjust your itinerary. This is especially true for long-distance train travel in the US. Some large cities are not served directly by Amtrak trains, but by bus service from an Amtrak station in another city.

You may have to endure a late-night layover in a sparsely-populated station in order to make a train connection.

If you want to visit hill towns or remote archaeological sites, you will probably have to take a bus or taxi from the train station in order to get to the places you want to visit. Big-city train stations are usually located downtown, but smaller train stations are often placed on the outskirts of the towns they serve. ( Tip:  Consider taking a locally-operated day tour from a large city to some of these outlying sites if you do not want to take a bus or taxi to them.)

In many countries, you will need to reserve your seats – for a fee – and you will usually have to pay another supplemental fee to travel on a faster train. If you do not reserve a seat, you may end up standing for the duration of your journey.

You may need to bring your own food and beverages onto the train.

Conditions may be crowded, dirty or uncomfortable, particularly at peak travel times or in developing countries.

The locals you meet may turn out to be diehard party animals or, worse, petty criminals . Be sure to wear a money belt to keep your valuables safe.

In the end, you will need to do some research on train ticket prices, check schedules against your proposed itinerary and weigh the pros and cons of train travel against your personal preferences before deciding which mode of transportation is best for you.

I've spent 100 hours traveling by train. Here are 3 simple reasons why it's the best mode of transportation.

  • After spending 117 hours on the rails, I think trains are the best mode of transportation.
  • I find trains to be more comfortable and reliable than flights and cars.
  • Traveling by train is also one of the most sustainable ways to get around the world.

Traveling by train is my preferred method of transportation, from short trips to long-haul rides.

travel train benefits

I have taken a lot of flights and road trips throughout my life, but two years ago, I dabbled in the world of train travel and never looked back.

After more than 100 hours on trains in the US, Europe, and Canada, I've found that it's the most comfortable and reliable way to get around while traveling sustainably .

For one thing, trains are one of the most sustainable forms of travel.

travel train benefits

I like to be conscious of the environmental impacts of my travels. When it comes to transportation, sustainability experts told me that traveling by train is more sustainable than flying.

In the US,  Amtrak  has reported that taking trains over flights reduces a traveler's carbon emissions by 73%. In Europe,  Eurail has reported  that traveling by train contributes between 66% and 75% less carbon than driving or flying.

Trains are also the most reliable rides, in my experience.

travel train benefits

While my train journeys haven't had a perfect track record, I've experienced the fewest and shortest delays while traveling by train. Most of my rides have departed and arrived on time. And on rare occasions, I've experienced delays up to two hours long.

This is nothing compared to the countless delayed flights I've experienced in recent years. Delays between an hour to 24 hours later than the original departure time have almost made me miss family events. And the uncertainty of whether I'll get to my destination on time makes me anxious every time I fly.

Trains have also proven to be more reliable than road trips for me over the last couple of years thanks to traffic jams that have resulted in longer drive times.

I find trains to be more comfortable than other modes of transportation.

travel train benefits

I think train seats are more comfortable than plane or car seats. They're typically larger, in my experience. I also find that upgrading to business and first classes is more affordable on trains than on planes. So I've been able to ride in first and business class in large, plush seats.

When it comes to overnight rides, I think a bunk on a sleeper train is much easier to sleep on than a passenger seat in a car or economy seat on a red-eye flight because I can lie down completely.

Overall, I've found that taking trains makes my trip feel more like the journey is part of the destination.

travel train benefits

In addition to being a comfortable, sustainable, and reliable mode of transportation, traveling by train has given me unparalleled views of the world, with landscapes changing every second.

Being stuck on a train for long periods of time also forces me to sit back and do nothing, which is something I don't often prioritize in my daily life.

So I know I'll keep traveling by train whenever possible.

From convenience to cost, getting there by rail is a great — and scenic — option

10 reasons to travel by train

From convenience to cost, getting there by rail is a great — and scenic — option.

Road trips are fun and air travel is fast, but boarding a train is one of the best ways to see the world — in style. Here, 10 reasons to consider riding the rails:

1. The comfort

Airplane seats can get a bit squishy, cars — depending on how many people (and suitcases) you cram into them — are cramped, and buses are bumpy. Perhaps the most significant advantage of train travel is the space so stretch out, curl up, and get cozy.

2. The food (and drink)

Forget brown-bagging it: whether or not it has separate, dedicated dining cars — which are an experience unto themselves — a train offers the opportunity to dine in your seat, in style. While G Adventures Rail itineraries generally don’t include meals on board, most of our train journeys include the opportunity to purchase food and drink: in India, for instance, you can buy a cup of chai from vendors who board the train during stops.

3. The speed

Waiting in line is a necessary evil of travel, but rail travel eliminates much of this inconvenience. There’s no airport security check, shorter baggage claim processes, and a shorter distance between your feet on the station floor and your derriere in your designated seat.

Great food and drink is often available for purchase on long train rides.

4. The scenery

Rail travel offers a view to some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery, up close and personal. And since many train tracks traverse paths where other modes of transportation simply don’t — or can’t — go, you’ll be getting a front-row view to parts of the world that are basically exclusive to you (and your fellow travellers, of course).

5. The kid-friendliness

Since many trains offer the flexibility to stretch out, get up, and walk around, they’re much better for small, easily bored passengers who might have difficulty sitting still for long journeys. (All that flexibility works for grown-up riders too, of course.)

6. The convenience

Many major airports are located great distances from city centres, meaning that, once your (potentially lengthy) plane journey has wrapped up, you’ve still got a bit more travelling to go before you reach your destination. Train stations, by contrast, are usually centrally located; getting from your seat to the city is just a matter of a few steps.

Rail travel allows you to stretch out, make friends, and enjoy the ride.

7. The peace and quiet

Long, meditative train journeys offer plenty of time for reflection — especially since, when travelling by rail, there are generally fewer announcements and security procedures. Combine this with a relative surplus of space, and you get plenty of distraction-free travel time.

8. The cost

Flying from one country to another (to another, to another…) can get expensive, and fast. Taking the train may take a bit more time (though, given all the perks listed above, it’s more than worth it), but it’ll save you big bucks in the process.

9. The environmental implications

According to the Guardian , worldwide, road users (motorists) account for 71% of transport CO2 emissions, air travel makes up 12.3% and shipping comprises 14.3%. By contrast, rail travel claims a measly 1.8% — making it, clearly, the greenest choice.

10. The romance

If the speed, convenience, price, and comfort of train travel still doesn’t have you sold, perhaps the charm will. There’s just something very quaint, old-school, and, frankly, romantic about riding the rails, no matter where you’re coming from or travelling to.

7 reasons why your next family vacation should be a train trip

Lori Zaino

With hotel prices and airfare costs skyrocketing this summer , now may be the perfect time to consider a train trip with your family.

Train travel is often more comfortable and less stressful than air travel. Prices, comfort levels and train trips themselves vary greatly — an Amtrak ride through the Rocky Mountains is very different than zipping through the Italian countryside on the Frecciarosa , speeding through Japan on a bullet train or taking the Eurostar from London to Paris — but chances are there's a train trip to fit your vacation budget and needs.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

Here's why your next family trip should be by train.

travel train benefits

Train travel can be more comfortable and relaxing

Rushing through TSA security at the airport with your family can often be stressful, especially if you're tight on time or you haven't packed wisely and it takes a few attempts to get through.

travel train benefits

Any type of security you encounter at a train station will almost certainly be less stringent than at an airport. You needn't worry about packing small liquids in your carry-on bag or if your backpack is a few inches larger than the maximum size — luggage weight, size and contents aren't heavily restricted. Trains also tend to have fewer rules related to bikes, bikes, strollers and other family-friendly items.

More relaxed rules lead to a more relaxing trip in general. In most cases, train stations are located in the city center, not on the outskirts like airports, meaning departure and arrival — especially for city residents — can be simpler and more cost-effective. Seats are more spacious and recline more. You may have four seats that face each other, and you'll almost always be seated next to your family and friends with no extra charges incurred for seat selection.

Plus, with no takeoff, landing or turbulence, the whole family can board the train, sit down and stand up when needed, and avoid any child (or adult) tears due to uncomfortable, small seats or earache from cabin pressure.

Train travel can be more affordable

Rates for train rides vary worldwide but, in some cases, they can be more affordable. Sometimes they take less time than flying door-to-door (this is often the case with high-speed rail services in Asia and Europe). Occasionally, they take much longer. You have to weigh the comfort level with the experience and the price for each trip to see what's right for your family.

For example, here's a sample summer Amtrak fare from Atlanta to New Orleans for a family of four compared to a sample airfare for a two-week vacation on the same dates. Even the base airfare on Spirit ($1,173, not including any extras like baggage or seat selection) is much higher than the round trip coach train fare ($274). But the train takes almost 13 hours versus less than two when flying.

travel train benefits

But private room train prices for this trip start at $1,400 round trip, which is much less than domestic business class roundtrip ($2,469 on Delta ). And remember, private rooms on Delta's domestic business class aren't a thing.

travel train benefits

Assuming you don't mind spending a full day on the train (remember, you can get up a move around, and there's a bar car), this might be a more luxurious, comfortable and affordable option for your family.

If you are on a budget, it's best to research your desired route, comparing the price, journey time and cabin or train car class to see what option affords the best value and comfort for your family.

Train travel can be entertaining

Train travel isn't just a means of transport to reach your destination. Taking the train is often part of the vacation itself. Many children love trains, so a train trip might be exciting for them as they pass by incredible landscapes in the U.S. or worldwide. And if your teens get bored looking out the window, remember, they won't have to put their phones in airplane mode — they can connect as normal.

travel train benefits

Train travel can also encourage family interaction, as some trains accommodate four people around a table or even offer private rooms. Families can hang out in the dining car for a meal or the bar car over drinks. Plus, kids (and adults) have space to move about the aisles and stretch their legs. Some routes even allow travelers to get on and off the train during stops.

Some scenic train trips allow families to experience one-of-a-kind landscapes in exotic places. For example, Peru 's Vistadome train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu, has panoramic windows that allow the whole family to admire the impressive backdrop of the Andes. Amtrak's Coast Starlight West Coast route offers incredible views of the sparkling Pacific Ocean and verdant forests. Ride the rails around Switzerland on a myriad of routes to soak in the snow-capped Swiss Alps, or lean out of the train window in Sri Lanka to feel the cool breeze and see the lush tea plantations on the route between Ella and Kandy.

But a train trip doesn't necessarily have to have epic scenery to be memorable. Children enjoy looking out the window at pretty much anything, and family bonding will happen even when the views aren't as spectacular.

Train travel can mean slow travel or fast travel

Some train trips, namely Amtrak journeys around the U.S., take a long time. But this fits right in with the concept of slow travel.

travel train benefits

Slow travel is about taking time to smell the roses. It's about physically moving slowly and allowing the time to connect with local people and immerse yourself in local art, cuisine, music and culture. Train travel is a way to do just that with family, with an emphasis on focusing on the moment and enjoying the beauty of the destinations and cultures around you, whether it be the southern U.S. or Southeast Asia.

Other train travel is about speed, and modern, high-speed railway machines are truly magnificent. If you want to experience some of the world's speediest trains, head to China, South Korea, Japan, Italy , France and Spain . Some of these trains can reach nearly 200 mph.

Trains are a more sustainable way to travel

A study by The Guardian showed that trains are responsible for less than 2% of transportation-related carbon dioxide emissions worldwide, versus aircraft at 12% and road vehicles at more than 70%. Just by choosing train travel, you're making the most sustainable choice possible out of those three. And as countries begin to work on zero-emission trains, taking the train may become an even more eco-conscious choice as time goes on.

Amtrak (and other rail providers) have loyalty programs

Earning and redeeming points isn't just for airfares and hotels. You can earn and redeem on train fares with Amtrak's Guest Rewards program. Frequent Amtrak travelers may also want to consider getting the Amtrak Guest Rewards World Mastercard , which offers perks like upgrades, lounge passes, bonus points and a companion coupon.

Frequent train travelers in Europe may benefit from joining frequent train traveler programs there such as Club Eurostar in the U.K., Mas Renfe in Spain, CartaFreccia in Italy or Grand Voyageur in France.

New and exciting train routes worldwide

Want to feel a little trainspiration? Here are some new and unique routes to inspire your next railway adventure:

Rocky Mountaineer U.S. Route

Launched in 2021, this route takes you from the red rocks of Utah to the Colorado Rockies . As you ride from Moab to Glenwood Springs to Denver, you'll cross the Continental Divide, descend through deep canyons and roll past the Colorado River, all while viewing majestic scenery from glass-domed train cars.

Egypt's first high-speed train

Using a German train line, you'll be able to cruise from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean in Egypt on more than 600 miles of tracks with this new high-speed Siemens train, which will hopefully be ready for passengers by 2023.

travel train benefits

Al-Andalus train in southern Spain

If you're in the market for something a bit more special than the typical Madrid-Seville RENFE high-velocity trains, consider taking a luxury train journey on the Al-Andalus , which traverses Andalusian destinations like Seville, Granada, Jerez, Ronda, Córdoba and Cádiz. The train even features living room and game room cars. Seven-day itineraries (from $6,999 person, including meals and excursions) are currently available for June or October 2022.

Understanding the Benefits of Train Travel in 2020

travel train benefits

L et’s be honest: We were all hoping that despite the craziness of 2020, we’d still be able to check off a location or two on our travel bucket lists, take pics for the ‘gram, and make lasting memories with friends across borders. While current events may have humbled many of those goals, they don’t necessarily make having new experiences impossible. The truth is, travel can still be had this summer with safety top of mind. After all, in the US, you’re just a train ride away.

All aboard, because Amtrak provides safe and convenient routes to get you back home, to your favorite people, or to your dream domestic destination. Imagine exploring some of the country’s best outdoors — the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, Glacier National Park — or simply reconnecting with friends and family in the city with an ease and flexibility that is so needed during these times. Amtrak travels to more than 500 destinations in 46 states (and three Canadian provinces!), meaning there’s no shortage of options to help you rediscover the places (and people!) that make this country great.

In other words? Thanks to the benefits of train travel, your summer travel goals are still possible with Amtrak. Here’s how.

Your safety is priority #1.

One of the biggest travel considerations this summer is how to do so safely. Amtrak is answering this concern by limiting bookings on reserved trains to allow for more physical distancing onboard. If you’re traveling solo, you can use the seat next to you for your personal belongings. Traveling in a group? Close friends and family members will easily be able to find seats together. All employees and customers are required to wear face masks at stations and onboard trains, too.

Amtrak has also upgraded its cleaning protocols , installing plastic barriers where necessary and cleaning commonly used surfaces like door handles, countertops, and seating areas with EPA-registered disinfectants. Trains have an air filtration system with an exchange rate of fresh air every four to five minutes, and to keep your onboard experience as contact-free as possible, passengers can use a foot-operated “automatic door open” button to move between cars. If you’re hungry, know that all payments in the cafe are cashless.

Your time onboard can be totally exclusive.

Amtrak’s private rooms are perfect for solo travelers, couples, and families who prefer extra privacy. The Roomette includes two cozy seats that can be converted into beds, charging outlets, and complimentary WiFi, while the larger Bedroom features similar amenities but twice the space. Imagine you and your travel companions lounging comfortably as the train rolls on, playing your favorite songs as the soundtrack to your journey, a spectacular American view whizzing by the window.

Private rooms also grant you priority boarding and access to the lounge at major stations. Other onboard perks include three complimentary meals (for long-haul routes) and a dedicated sleeping car attendant to help with your luggage and provide turndown service. Now that’s how you travel in style.

You can arrive right in the heart of downtown…

The very first Amtrak ride — May 1st, 1971 — whisked passengers from Philadelphia to New York City. Philly’s 30th Street Station is right on the edge of downtown, while NYC’s Penn Station needs no detailed introduction. Instead of adding a 30-minute taxi ride to get into the city, on many routes, Amtrak drops you off right where you need to be, whether you’re in town to check in on family or for a much-needed break from the 2020 routine.

Note: 30th Street Station and Penn Station are destinations in themselves. Los Angeles, Denver, and Chicago also have stations worthy of a visit in their own right (think of the potential for the ‘gram).

…or minutes from the great outdoors.

California dreaming? The California Zephyr, which runs daily between Chicago and San Francisco, includes a ride through the Rocky Mountains, with stops in the high mountain towns of Granby and Fraser. On the Crescent line — New York City to New Orleans — you’ll cruise through premier outdoor towns like Greenville, South Carolina, before arriving on the beautiful streets of the Big Easy. You could also get to bayou country from LA on the Sunset Limited, by way of the bold and beautiful desert landscapes around Tucson and in West Texas.

Browse the full route list and get dreaming about your ultimate American rediscovery tour.

With flexibility and budget options, you can’t go wrong.

The popularity of road trips and domestic travel are on the rise this year. Riding on Amtrak provides the same benefits without having to worry about weather, packing light, getting gas, or other driving hassles — and you certainly won’t use up your phone data trying to pull up directions, either. Once you’ve paid for that flexible ticket (maybe you scored a deal ?), there are no more hidden charges; you can even change your ticket fee-free through August.

Train Travel: Exploring the Pros and Cons

Table of Contents

Last Updated on April 9, 2024 by Jackie

Did you know that the world’s longest rail journey is on the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia? It spans about 9,289 kilometers (5,772 miles) and takes around 7 days to complete the journey from Moscow to Vladivostok.

Train travel is like a magical journey that takes you back to carefree childhood adventures or ignites a spark for new scenic escapades. The rhythmic chug of the train and the ever-changing views outside create a soothing and peaceful vibe, making it a truly unique and enjoyable experience. Even as train travel evolves, it still retains its charm, offering a delightful way to explore the world.

One of the most enticing parts of train travel is the opportunity to soak in the beauty of the journey. Unlike other modes of transportation, trains often follow scenic routes, treating passengers to breathtaking views of cities, countryside, and natural wonders. The comfort and relaxation that come with train travel are unbeatable. Passengers can freely move about, stretch their legs, and even visit dining cars, enhancing the overall experience.

So, whether you’re reminiscing about childhood train adventures or dreaming of a new rail journey, train travel offers a blend of nostalgia and excitement that’s hard to beat.

Train Travel: The Pros and Cons

The pros of train travel, scenic views.

Imagine gazing out the window to see lush green fields rolling by, dotted with colorful wildflowers dancing in the breeze. Or perhaps you’ll catch a glimpse of majestic mountains standing tall against the horizon, their snow-capped peaks glistening in the sunlight. As the train winds its way through winding valleys and alongside shimmering rivers, you’ll feel as though you’re part of a nature documentary, with every view worthy of a postcard.

But it’s not just the landscapes that make train travel so enchanting. It’s the sense of freedom and adventure that comes with it. Unlike being cooped up in a car or plane, on a train, you can stretch your legs, wander to the dining car for a snack, or simply sit back and watch the world go by.

Comfort and Relaxation

All aboard! Train travel offers a spacious and comfy ride that’s perfect for stretching out and enjoying the journey. No cramped seats or stuffy cabins here! Passengers can freely wander around, stretch those legs, and maybe even make a pit stop at the dining car for a tasty treat. It’s like a moving hotel, where the views outside your window are constantly changing, and the journey is just as enjoyable as the destination.

Eco-Friendly Option

Trains are like the superheroes of travel, zooming across the land with a smaller carbon footprint than other modes of transport. They’re the green machines of the travel world, perfect for eco-conscious travelers looking to reduce their impact on the planet.

Cheap Airline Deals

No Baggage Fees

Forget about those pesky baggage fees! Train travel is like the VIP treatment for your luggage. Most train companies offer generous baggage policies, so you can bring along all your essentials without worrying about extra charges.

City-Center Accessibility

Unlike airports that can leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere, train stations are like the welcoming gateways to the heart of the city. No need for expensive cab rides or confusing bus routes—just hop off the train, and you’re right where you need to be, ready to dive into the bustling city life.

The Cons of Train Travel

Longer travel times.

While train travel treats you to breathtaking views, it’s like taking the scenic route in life—sometimes, you just want to get to your destination faster! For those on a tight schedule or craving a quicker thrill, air travel might be more up your alley. It’s like the fast track to your destination, zooming past the miles in the blink of an eye.

Limited Routes

While trains can take you to many fantastic destinations, they might not reach every hidden gem. Sometimes, you’ve got to hop off the train and onto a bus, ferry, or even a trusty pair of hiking boots to reach those off-the-beaten-path spots.

Availability and Frequency

While train schedules can whisk you away to marvelous destinations, they might not run as frequently as you’d like. It’s like catching a ride on a magical time machine with its own quirky schedule.

728*90

While train tickets can sometimes be pricier than budget airline fares, there are tricks to steer clear of the steep costs. Snagging tickets early or hopping on the rail pass express can save you from a wallet-walloping ride.

Limited Amenities

While modern trains have jumped on the tech train with Wi-Fi and dining, they might not have the sky-high level of services you’d find on planes. So, if you’re looking for a flying feast of options, the airplane might be your first-class pick.

Advantages of Train Travel Through Europe

Choose European train travel for a ride that’s as efficient as it is enjoyable. Whether you’re a local looking for a hassle-free commute or a tourist eager to soak in the scenic route, trains in Europe are your ticket to a smooth and stress-free journey! Some of the key advantages of train travel in Europe include:

Avoidance of Airport Hassles

Say goodbye to those dreaded airport lines and check-ins. With train travel, you can skip the hassle and enjoy a more relaxed journey.

Extensive and Efficient Network

With a rail network that’s as interconnected as a spider’s web, you can zip from city to city faster than you can say “all aboard!” High-speed trains like the Eurostar, Thalys, and TGV are like the Formula 1 cars of the railway world, zooming you to your next adventure at lightning speed.

Scenic Journeys

As you glide through the countryside, you’ll be greeted by rolling hills, charming villages, and majestic mountains that seem to wave hello. Rivers glisten like ribbons in the sun, and historic towns peek out from behind every bend, inviting you to explore their timeless beauty. With views like these, every moment on the train is a postcard-worthy experience, leaving you with memories as vivid as the landscapes themselves!

City-Center to City-Center Travel

Picture this: You step off the train, and voilà! You’re smack dab in the middle of the action, right in the heart of the city. No need for extra buses, taxis, or teleportation devices to get to your final destination. The train station welcomes you with open arms, ready to whisk you away to the heart of the city’s excitement and adventure.

travel train benefits

Comfort and Amenities

Hop aboard a European train, and you’ll find yourself in a world of comfort and convenience! You’ve got plush seats, spacious carriages, and maybe even a dining car where you can wine and dine as you roll through the picturesque countryside. With Wi-Fi to keep you connected, power outlets to charge your devices, and onboard entertainment to keep you entertained, the journey flies by in a flash. And the best part? You can bring your own snacks and drinks, including a yummy glass of wine, to enjoy along the way.

Environmentally Friendly

Train travel in Europe is a planet-friendly adventure! With lower carbon emissions per passenger compared to flying, trains are like the superheroes of sustainable travel, whisking you away to your destination while keeping Mother Earth happy.

Flexibility and Frequency

In Europe, train schedules are like a buffet of departure times, offering travelers a smorgasbord of options to fit their jam-packed schedules. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, there’s a train with your name on it, ready to whisk you away to your next adventure.

Eurail Pass Options

If you’re planning a European adventure and want the freedom to roam, Eurail passes are your golden ticket! These magical passes let you hop on and off trains across a multitude of countries, all within a set period. It’s like having a train-themed passport to adventure, unlocking Europe’s treasures one station at a time.

When you travel by train in Europe, you don’t need to worry about squeezing your belongings into a tiny suitcase or paying extra for that extra pair of shoes. Most train companies offer generous baggage policies, so you can pack all the essentials and more without breaking the bank. So, pack your bags (and maybe even throw in that extra outfit or two), because on this train, there’s no such thing as too much luggage!

Cultural Experience

When you hop on a train in Europe, you’re not just embarking on a journey to your destination—you’re diving headfirst into a melting pot of cultures, languages, and stories. Whether you’re sharing a compartment with a chatty local or striking up a conversation with a fellow traveler over a cup of coffee in the dining car, train travel is a window into the vibrant tapestry of European life.

Unlike the nerve-wracking dance of dodging traffic or the constant GPS recalculations of a road trip, hopping on a train means you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride without worrying about wrong turns or traffic jams.

300*250

Disadvantages of Train Travel Through Europe

While European train travel is a delightful adventure, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns. Before you get too cozy in your plush train seat, here are a few speed bumps to be aware of:

Travel Time

While trains are fantastic for soaking in the scenery, they might not always be the speediest option for long-haul trips.

Flying, on the other hand, can get you from point A to point B faster than you can say, “I’ll take the window seat, please.” So, if time is of the essence and you’re not in the mood for a leisurely journey, hopping on a plane might be the way to go.

728*90

But hey, who said the journey has to be a race? Sometimes, the scenic route is the best route, and a few extra hours on a train can turn into an adventure of its own.

Limited Accessibility to Remote Areas

While Europe’s train network is extensive, it doesn’t reach every remote spot. So, you might need to hop on a bus, rent a car, or take a ferry to explore those off-the-beaten-path gems. It adds a bit more planning and transfers to your journey, but it’s all part of the adventure!

Train ticket costs in Europe can be a wild ride, with prices varying based on your route, travel class, and how early you book. Sometimes, you might find yourself paying more for a train ticket than a budget airline seat, especially if you’re booking at the last minute or aiming for those fancy first-class seats.

Availability and Reservations

During peak travel seasons, snagging a seat on your favorite route can feel like winning a golden ticket. But beware, last-minute bookings might leave you stranded on the platform, watching the train of opportunity speed away. So, plan ahead and secure your spot early to avoid the dreaded “no room on board” blues!

Strikes and Disruptions

So, you’re all set for your European adventure, hopping on the train with excitement bubbling like a freshly opened bottle of champagne. But wait, what’s this? A strike, a technical hiccup, or some unexpected twist in the tracks? Yep, strikes happen! It happened to us in Lake Garda, Italy! So, stay flexible, and embrace the unexpected detours as part of your thrilling train journey through Europe.

Luggage Restrictions

While trains are usually more lenient with baggage, some high-speed services or international routes might have a few rules up their sleeves. So, be sure to check your baggage size and weight limits before you hit the tracks, unless you fancy a game of luggage limbo with a conductor!

Comfort and Space

With limited space and lots of passengers, you might find yourself rubbing elbows (literally!) with fellow travelers. It’s all part of the adventure, right? Just remember to pack your patience along with your luggage!

Connection Times

Okay, you’re on a thrilling train adventure through Europe, with a quick transfer at a bustling station. As you step off your first train, you spot your next train on the opposite platform, and the race is on! Dodging through a sea of passengers like a character in a spy movie, you make a dash for it, all while balancing your luggage and trying to keep your cool. Will you make it in time, or will you have an unexpected layover in a city you never planned to visit?

Lack of Direct Routes

In certain cases, there might not be direct train connections between specific destinations, necessitating multiple transfers and potentially extending travel time.

European Rail Companies

When it comes to train travel, Europe’s got it all, from sleek high-speed trains to charming local services. Let’s take a look at some of the top rail companies that keep this continent on the move:

  • TrainLine.com is my go-to train booking company. What we love about TrainLine is they don’t charge extra for tickets because you’re using their service. You pay the same price as booking directly with an individual line. TrainLine sells tickets for rails throughout most of Europe.
  • Omio is very similar to Trainline in that with Omio you can book tickets from just about any rail service in just about any country in Europe.
  • RailEurope is the formal agent for rail tickets in Europe. The problem with RailEurope is that their tickets are occasionally more expensive when booked through them, rather than booking directly through the actual rail company.
  • Eurostar: Known for its speedy service between major European cities, Eurostar is your ticket to cross-channel adventures. Hop on board and zip from London to Paris or Brussels in style.

Tip:  Eurail Pass

The Eurail Pass is fantastic if you plan on traveling through different countries throughout Europe. It’s a ticket allowing you to ride any train anywhere in Europe. With Eurail you don’t have to book individual tickets for each destination. There are several types of Eurail passes:

  • Global Pass : The Global Pass allows unlimited travel through any country in Europe for 15 days to 3 months.
  • Select Pass : The Select Pass allows for 5-15 days of travel within a two month period. However, this pass limits you to travel through only up to 5 “border countries”. In other words, Austria, Slovenia and Italy border each other, so you could travel between these countries with this pass.
  • Single-Country Pass : The Single Country Pass is just what it sounds like. You can travel within a single country for eight days. This pass is good for one month. This pass is a great option, for instance, if you’re traveling through Italy for a week.

Advantages of Train Travel Through the United States

While the US might not have as many train tracks as Europe, hopping on a train here is an experience worth trying. Why? Well, picture this: you’re cruising through vast landscapes, from rugged mountains to sweeping plains, all from the comfort of your seat. Plus, train stations in the US are often located in the heart of cities, so you can step off the train and dive right into the action. So, if you’re up for a scenic ride with a dash of convenience, train travel in the US might just be your ticket to a memorable journey!

Scenic Routes

Train journeys in the US are like a cross-country sightseeing tour on rails. Picture yourself zipping past majestic mountains, winding through lush forests, and hugging the rugged coastlines—all while lounging comfortably in your seat.

Unlike cramped airplane cabins, train cars in the US offer passengers room to stretch out and relax. With plenty of legroom and comfy seating, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. Plus, you’re free to wander around, visit the observation car for breathtaking views, and indulge in some delicious dining options. It’s like having a cozy home on wheels, complete with stunning scenery passing by outside.

Hop off the train and dive right into the heart of the action! In the US, many major cities boast train stations smack dab in the middle of all the action. Forget about long, boring commutes from far-flung airports—when you step off the train, you’re already in the heart of the city.

Train travel is like giving a high-five to Mother Nature compared to flying or driving. With a lower carbon footprint per passenger, you can feel good about reducing your environmental impact while still enjoying the journey. Plus, you get to sit back, relax, and watch the world go by without worrying about traffic jams or airport security lines. It’s a win-win for you and the planet!

Avoiding Airport Hassles

Train travel is like a magic carpet ride that whisks you away without the hassle of airport security lines, baggage checks, or early check-ins. You can just roll up, hop on board, and let the journey unfold.

Historic and Cultural Experience

Riding on historic train routes in the United States is like stepping back in time to an era of steam engines, elegant dining cars, and glamorous travel. These routes are not just a way to get from A to B; they’re a journey through history, offering a glimpse into America’s past and the golden age of rail travel.

Ample Baggage Allowance

When you travel by train in the United States, you don’t need to worry about cramming everything into a tiny suitcase or paying extra for bringing your favorite pillow. With more generous baggage allowances, you can pack all the essentials and maybe even a little extra without breaking the bank.

Flexibility and Relaxation

All aboard the freedom train! When you travel by train, you’re not just getting from point A to point B; you’re embarking on a journey of comfort and relaxation. Say goodbye to the turbulence of airplanes and the traffic jams of highways—on the train, the only jam you’ll encounter is the one playing on your headphones.

Meeting Fellow Travelers

Train travel isn’t just about getting to your destination; it’s about the journey and the people you meet along the way. Whether you’re swapping stories with a fellow traveler in the dining car or sharing a laugh with a stranger in the observation car, train travel brings people together in a way that other modes of transportation just can’t match.

Cost for Coast-to-Coast Travel

For just $250, you can hop on the coast-to-coast express and embark on the adventure of a lifetime! Three nights of non-stop travel, crossing from one end of the country to the other, all without breaking the bank.

No Rush-Hour Traffic Jams

Say goodbye to bumper-to-bumper madness and hello to smooth, uninterrupted travel. Trains in the U.S. have their own tracks, so you can glide past traffic jams with ease. No more staring at brake lights or honking your horn in frustration. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride while others are stuck in the slow lane.

Your Car Can Travel by Train

Hop aboard the Amtrak Auto Train, where your car gets its own ticket to ride! Experience the convenience of bringing your wheels along for the journey, cruising from Virginia to Florida with ease. No more road trip hassles or endless hours behind the wheel—just sit back, relax, and let the train take the wheel!

Family-Friendly

Train travel is a fantastic option for families, offering a stress-free journey where kids can roam and play. With plenty of space to stretch their legs and explore, boredom is left at the station. Plus, many trains cater to families with special amenities and services, ensuring a smooth ride for everyone on board.

Disadvantages of Train Travel Through the U.S.

While train travel in the United States has its perks, like spacious seating and scenic views, there are a few bumps along the track to keep in mind. Depending on your needs and preferences, these downsides might throw a wrench in your travel plans:

You May Miss Something

When you’re on a train, the world whizzes by outside your window, teasing you with tantalizing sights just out of reach. Unlike a car, where you can impulsively pull over to investigate a quirky roadside attraction or a charming town, trains stick to their tracks like a determined toddler glued to a favorite toy. So, if you’re the type who loves to spontaneously explore every nook and cranny of the countryside, you might find yourself wistfully watching those intriguing towns and landmarks zip by, just out of reach.

Limited Connectivity

In the sprawling patchwork quilt of the United States, train tracks aren’t always stitched as densely as in other countries. This means that getting to some destinations solely by train can be like trying to navigate a maze with half the walls missing. You might find yourself in a town that’s as train-accessible as a desert island, with no direct connections to the railway network, leaving you to ponder the complexities of arranging additional transportation to reach your desired spot.

In the race between the tortoise, the hare, and the airplane, trains in the US often play the role of the steady tortoise. While they may not win the speed contest, they do offer a more leisurely pace that allows you to soak in the scenery and enjoy the journey. However, if you’re in a hurry to reach your destination faster than a speeding bullet (train), you might find yourself wishing for a bit more of that supersonic speed magic.

Frequency of Services

In the land of the free and the home of the brave, train schedules can sometimes be as elusive as a jackalope. While you might find frequent services on popular routes, for those off-the-beaten-path journeys, you might have to channel your inner eagle scout and plan ahead.

Delays and Punctuality

Train travel in the US is subject to potential delays, which can be caused by various factors, including infrastructure issues, weather conditions, or freight train congestion. While efforts are made to maintain schedules, unexpected delays can occur.

While train travel in the US can be a wallet-friendly way to journey, especially for longer routes, it might not always be the cheapest ticket in town. So, if you’re looking to pinch those pennies, keep an eye out for sweet deals and discounts!

Lack of High-Speed Trains

Unlike some countries with well-established high-speed train networks, the US has limited high-speed rail options. High-speed trains could significantly reduce travel times and enhance the appeal of train travel for certain routes.

Baggage Handling

Unlike airports with their fancy baggage handling, train stations here give you the freedom (or the burden, depending on how you see it) of lugging your luggage around. So, get ready to flex those muscles and show your bags who’s boss!

Regional Service Disparities

On some US trains, you might feel like you’re riding in first class, with plush seats, Wi-Fi, and gourmet dining. But hop on a regional train, and you might find yourself in a time capsule, with basic seats and minimal frills.

Riding the rails in the US can be a throwback to a simpler time, where the journey is part of the adventure. While some trains offer Wi-Fi and dining cars, it’s not always the luxurious spread you’d find at 30,000 feet. But hey, who needs fancy Wi-Fi when you’ve got panoramic views and the rhythmic clickety-clack of the tracks? It’s a trade-off, but one that’s full of charm and character!

Seasonal and Regional Availability

Some train routes may only operate seasonally or have limited service during specific times of the year, which can impact travel planning.

United States and North America Rail Companies

Amtrak is like the grand conductor of train travel in North America, chugging along with a network that spans cities and regions across the US and Canada. They’re the main act, but there are also some regional and commuter rail companies that add their own flavor to the mix. Here are a few other names you might hear echoing through the train yards:

  • Amtrak :  Amtrak is the main train line in the United States, and it’s really the only one if you’re traveling across the country.  The best advantage with Amtrak is that you can take your car on the train with you, so there’s no need to rent a car in your travel destination.
  • Alaska Railroad :  You cannot get to Alaska by train. Of course, you can take the Amtrak Cascades train to Washington’s ferry station, then take a ferry to Alaska. Within Alaska, you can take the Alaska Railroad throughout Southcentral and the interior of Alaska. On a train in Alaska you’ll get to enjoy all of the remote landscapes you wouldn’t be able to see while driving or flying throughout Alaska.
  • Via Rail : Via Rail is the only train company offering train travel from one end of Canada to the other end.

Scenic Train Rides Through North America

Who says you need to travel far and wide for a train adventure? One of our favorite things to do is hop on a local train and enjoy a short, scenic ride right in the heart of the city we’re visiting. It’s like a mini-vacation within a vacation, and we’ve made some of our most cherished memories this way.

Grand Canyon Railway

The Grand Canyon is just one of those things you have to see in your lifetime. We were staying in Sedona , Arizona… so close to the Grand Canyon, when we found out there was a daily train ride from Sedona to the Canyon.

The Grand Canyon Railway leaves Sedona daily and arrives a couple of hours later at the South Rim of the Canyon. Then you spend about four hours walking around and exploring the area. This is a really fun way to travel to the Canyon, but, of course, your time is limited at the Canyon. For more on this, see my post on the Grand Canyon .

Grand Canyon Railroad Arizona

Napa Valley Wine Train

I absolutely love Napa Valley, California !!! When we go to Napa we spend every day, and all day in wineries. It’s one of my favorite trips to do in the US. A few years ago, for something different, we decided to check out the Napa Valley Wine Train . This train takes you on a 35 mile round trip tour from downtown Napa to our favorite little town in Napa Valley, St. Helena. The train stops at different wineries along the way, but in the meantime, you get to enjoy different wines on the train! Not only do they have excellent wines on the train, they also serve a fantastic meal.

Napa Valley Wine Trains offer several different wine tours to choose from… lunch, dinner, half day and full day winery tours, and even murder mystery tours. Oh, and the scenery along the way is incredible! This was such a fun day, and something I would love to do again.

The beautiful scenery along the Napa Valley Wine Train route California

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is another one of my most memorable train rides in the U.S. In western North Carolina is a beautiful train ride, especially in the fall! This scenic ride leaves from and returns to Bryson City right at the edge of the Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Railroad offers a variety of options and special events throughout the year, including a Polar Express ride in the Winter.

The views from this rail are stunning, and you can choose to sit inside or in an open air car! There are tunnels, bridges, valleys, river gorges, and over 50 miles of track to explore.

The trips are usually around 3-4 hours long, depending on which excursion you take. See a few options here.

See the World by Train

Vacations by Rail offers a huge selection of train travel, including rail tours, and even luxury and custom train trips in every continent in the world! Well, not EVERY continent…  Antarctica is definitely out! But, you can book train tours in Africa, Europe , South America , North America , Asia , and Australia ! This is a great resource that we will definitely be using in the very near future!!

Why Train Travel is Good for the Environment

Find out exactly why train travel is more sustainable and better for the environment than any other form of transport.

travel train benefits

There’s something indescribably romantic about the idea of train travel, and it’s becoming an ever more popular option as the world becomes increasingly conscious of the environmental impacts of travelling. But why are trains better than cars and planes when it comes to the environment?

The answer isn’t completely straightforward. The eco-friendliness of different modes of travel can vary greatly based on a huge range of factors - whether something runs on traditional fuel or electricity, where the fuel or electricity is sourced from, the length of the journey, and how many passengers there are.

But although there isare many nuances, experts broadly agree on one thing. Trains are nearly always the greenest mode of transport, and often by a wide margin . Read on for a breakdown of why.

Train Travel Vs. Plane Travel: Which is Better?

Train Travel Vs. Car Travel: Which is Better?

Almost all travel has some kind of adverse impact on the environment, and sadly there is no quick fix. Similar to other high-impact industries like fashion, a shift in attitude can truly make the biggest difference on an individual level.

‘Fast fashion’ and its counterpart ‘slow fashion’ are terms fast entering the mainstream vernacular; whilst the term ‘slow travel’ is some way behind, it’s a similar concept and a useful way to think about it. When it comes to reducing the overall environmental impact of travel, the best thing we can do is to take the slower and more mindful path.

Trains Emit Less CO2 Than Other Transport Methods

It’s all about the carbon, and in general train travel emits around 66 to 80 percent less carbon than planes and cars . For some context, according to EcoPassenger, getting on a plane from London to Paris will emit around 122 kilograms of carbon dioxide per passenger, compared with 48 kilograms by car and only 8.3 kilograms by train.

How much CO2 your train journey emits will depend on whether the train is fueled by diesel or electricity, and whether the electricity is coal-powered or renewables-powered.

Recently developed hydrogen-powered trains are the most eco-friendly trains in the world, emitting nothing except steam as a by-product and creating very little noise. The Coradia iLint is the world’s first passenger train service powered by hydrogen fuel cell, now running in Salzgitter, Germany, and Żmigród in Poland.

Trains Use Less Energy

One of the biggest environmental benefits of trains is that they consume far less energy than other types of transport. It takes a huge amount of fuel to get a plane carrying hundreds of people airborne, whereas trains are streamlined, require much less energy to move, and are increasingly able to run on electricity.

Around 50 percent of trains in Europe are now run on electricity according to Statista . Switzerland comes out on top, with 100 percent electric-powered trains, whereas Ireland comes last with only 5.3 percent of trains running on electricity.

travel train benefits

Trains Use Less Space and Transport More People

The number of people being transported makes a big difference when it comes to the overall energy-efficiency of different modes of travel, and trains unsurprisingly come out on top here as well. Being streamlined and compact, a single train can transport up to 50,000 people per hour, whereas the average plane carries 85 to 100 passengers per flight. An average motorway moves only around 2,500 people per hour, with many cars carrying just a single passenger.

There’s Less Noise Pollution

Noise pollution is not only unpleasant but has an adverse effect on the wellbeing of humans and animals alike, causing high stress levels, sleep disturbance, hypertension, and tinnitus. It has even been linked to adverse learning capability and memory in children. It is thought that around a third of Europeans and Americans are regularly exposed to unhealthy levels of noise.

Whilst train lines can definitely produce noise pollution for those closest, they usually create a less damaging level of noise and affect fewer people than flight paths. Whilst planes can reach around 120 decibels of noise, trains are estimated at around 85 decibels at close proximity. For context, a normal conversation is typically about 60 decibels.

It Encourages More Mindful Travel

Imagine if the journey wasn’t just something tedious to endure before your adventure really began? Whilst train travel is often the slower and usually more expensive route, it’s also a fast-track ticket to a more mindful, enriching travel experience.

Travelling by rail lets you soak up the changing landscapes, see towns and villages where real people go about their lives, and generally get a richer experience than if you pop up in your destination. Train travel helps us take more time to slow down and notice the world around us, a benefit both to travellers and the planet.

Are Trains Better for the Environment Than Planes?

Are trains better for the environment than planes? Put simply, yes. Besides emitting far more carbon and being far less efficient, there are other factors at play making planes worse for the environment than trains. A large number of travellers get both to and from the airport by car, increasing the overall environmental impact of each journey.

There are also lesser-known emissions, such as nitrogen oxide, that have a far worse impact when released into the atmosphere during plane travel. Shorter, domestic flights are averagely worse than long-haul flights - due to the fact more fuel is needed for take-off and landing than cruising - but overall, plane travel is by far the worst mode of transport when it comes to the environment.

travel train benefits

Are Trains Better for the Environment Than Cars?

If your car is powered by renewable electricity, it is certainly possible to have a greener journey by car than by train. But, although the adoption of green cars is getting increasingly common, it’s not happening nearly quickly enough. It is also nowhere near affordable or accessible enough for most of the world, meaning cars are still miles worse for the environment than train travel overall.

There are other drawbacks to travelling by car too. Cars cause densely populated cities to become noisy, polluted, and congested, and also create far more infrastructure deterioration than trains. Add to all this the increased danger of driving (cars produce 3 fatalities per billion passengers for every kilometre of travel, whereas trains are practically none), and the stress factor of arriving in a strange city by car and battling with road and parking restrictions, and train travel comes out the clear winner.

Why Traveling By Train Is Environmentally Friendly

Rail transport is the most environment-friendly way to travel. The greenhouse effect of gas emissions per kilometer on railway transport is 80% less than cars. In some countries, less than 3% of all transport gas emissions come from trains. The only methods more environmentally friendly than trains are walking and cycling . There are many reasons why choosing to travel by train is environmentally friendly and we would like to share these with you!

A typical train line can carry 50,000 people per hour. Compare this with a freeway lane, which can move only 2,500 people per hour.

Noise pollution – Why choosing to travel by train is environmentally friendly

Noise pollution is the adverse effect of noise on both humans and animals . It is a direct result of poor urban planning . Problems from noise pollution date back to ancient Rome! Today, noise pollution from cars can cause damage to people’s psychological state. Symptoms include hypertension, high-stress levels, tinnitus, sleep disturbance, and other harmful effects.

Currently, there are measures to limit the impact of roadway noise. measures include noise barriers, limiting vehicle speeds, changing roadway texture, as well as traffic controls that enable smooth vehicle flow. This means that cars in the traffic control system will need to use their brakes and acceleration less.

The train is environmentally friendly and that is critical. India is seeing sales of cars increasing on an annual basis. China is predicted to have 300 million cars on the road by 2030. Aviation and ship travel are also adding to global CO2 emissions. It appears that out of all the modes of transport, only trains are keeping emissions low and sustainable for the future .

Electric and Hybrid cars are obviously better for the environment than traditional cars, but the problem today is that these cars are too expensive to be sold at a level that will balance out the negative consequences of cars.

Diesel trains and electric trains

There is a difference between diesel trains and electric trains. Electric trains emit 20-35% less carbon than diesel trains. A train is environmentally friendly especially Electric trains that are powered by renewable energy and offer carbon-free journeys . Emissions from trains in Europe will reduce by a further 50% by 2030. These figures are great since trains account for 8.5% of all travel activity.

Trains or planes – why choosing to travel by train is environmentally friendly

A key important item when comparing trains to planes is that planes need to use an incredible amount of fuel for both takeoff and landing. Also, when people travel by plane, they tend to get to the airport by car. This adds to the CO2 emissions for their journey. This makes taking an intercity train a no-brainer for the environment.

There have been some recent developments, particularly for people traveling for business who are informed by travel agents of the carbon impact of their flights. Also, aside from the environment, it is very difficult to reach city centers by car, whereas, if you are on a train, you have direct access to the metropolitan centers. This, more often than not, also means that is much faster to travel by train than any other method.

Rome to Milan Trains

In conclusion, a train is environmentally friendly and the most environment-friendly way to travel and also provides convenience for people traveling for both business and pleasure. The increase in cars on the road means that congestion and pollution are on the increase and trains are the transport answer to protect the environment.

Decoding Europe’s Train Tickets: A Guide to Budget-Friendly Journeys

T here’s nowhere else in the world where you can jump on a train and be in another country within minutes. Europe is a continent where you can have a morning coffee in Brussels and sit in a Parisian cafe overlooking the Seine for lunch. As a person who grew up in a vast country (Australia), I have always found the concept of country-hopping novel. Here’s why you should consider train tickets for your next visit to Europe.

Why Train Tickets Are a Great Way To See Europe

From the moment I wanted to travel, I started looking into the best way to go about it, and one of the first things I saw was Eurorail. The idea is simple—one fare and you can travel on any train within Europe. It sounds convenient and straightforward until you know the price. One of my first thoughts was, “Surely, there has to be a better way. Surely, this isn’t what people in Europe pay to travel.”

The Basics of European Train Ticketing Systems

Each country in Europe operates its own unique train ticketing system. Travelers can save a significant amount of money by comparing the cost of individual tickets to the options available with Eurail passes. Various factors influence ticket prices, but with flexible plans and early booking, you can bypass expensive ticketing systems and secure more budget-friendly fares.

Most countries have easy-to-use online ticketing systems. It’s just a matter of doing a Google search for the place you’re traveling to. For example, you’ll find Spain’s railway system is called  Renfe . Finding the right operator is essential for optimal savings, as each country’s train operator offers discounted fares for early bookings. For example, booking a Brussels to Paris train ticket through the RailEurope site costs from USD 55 for a one-way ticket and the same on SNCB International, but you’ll be paying a USD 9.50 booking fee on RailEurope.

Other Factors To Consider

The European train ticketing system varies based on the type of train and the country you’re traveling in. Buying train tickets directly at the station is usually convenient for local, regional, and suburban trains since prices are fixed, and reservations are not typically required. However, fares operate similarly to airlines with dynamic pricing for long-distance trains in countries like France, Italy, Spain, and others.

Booking in advance can offer significant savings, but tickets have specific terms like limited refunds or changes. Traditional ticketing methods apply in countries like the UK, Germany, and Austria, with flexible and advance-purchase options available, each with its pricing and reservation rules. Understanding these nuances, including booking options, stopover policies, and special fare considerations like senior or youth discounts, is essential to navigating the system effectively and securing the best travel deals.

15 Best Books To Read Before Visiting Europe

When to use eurail.

If you take our Brussels to Paris example from above, you’d be paying $141 if you bought a Eurail pass for the same trip plus seat reservation fees. Eurail does have its advantages, though. If you plan on traveling frequently during your trip, the pass may be worth it. For example, if you plan on visiting six destinations over a month, a Global Pass will cost you $391 and allow you seven days of unlimited travel. If you plan on more than seven days of train travel, you can get an unlimited pass for a month, costing $991.

With Eurail, you can choose your travel days within a specified period, freeing you from rigid dates and allowing for plan adjustments. Additionally, the ease of booking and modifying your itinerary through online platforms and mobile apps streamline your travel planning. Moreover, certain Eurail passes offer extra benefits like discounted or complimentary access to attractions, ferry routes, or buses, further enriching your journey with additional options.

Remember you can also use your Eurail pass for train tickets within one country, but it is only available for some forms of transport. For example, you can use the London Overground in the UK, but not the Underground. If you have the time, do some research and see what your options are. If the Underground seems like your best choice to get to places you want to visit, Eurail isn’t for you.

Understanding Fare Classes and Seat Reservations

Some trains offer multiple fare classes, each with its amenities and pricing. Additionally, understanding when seat reservations are mandatory versus optional helps travelers plan better. For instance, while regional trains may not require reservations, high-speed or intercity trains in countries like France and Spain often do, sometimes at an additional cost.

On trains such as Eurostar, which travels through the UK, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Germany, you’ll have an option for first and second-class seating. Sometimes, the price difference might not be a lot; if that’s the case, opt for first class—it provides seats offering additional space and amenities, which may even encompass complimentary food and beverages.

Seasonal Considerations

Seasonal fluctuations impact train tickets and their prices across Europe. High tourist seasons, such as summer or significant holidays, often increase demand, leading to higher prices. Conversely, traveling during off-peak seasons can result in more affordable fares. Being flexible with travel dates or opting for shoulder seasons can be an intelligent strategy for budget-conscious travelers.

Loyalty Programs and Rail Passes

Some European countries offer loyalty programs or discount cards that provide perks like reduced fares, lounge access, or priority boarding. While it might seem strange to join a loyalty program when you’re only going to be in a place for two weeks, joining up can sometimes have benefits. Exploring these options could lead to substantial savings for frequent travelers or those planning an extended European stay. Similarly, aside from Eurail, consider other regional rail passes tailored to specific countries or regions, such as France’s SNCF pass or Italy’s Trenitalia offerings, which might offer better value depending on your itinerary.

Navigating Language and Currency Differences

Many European train ticketing platforms offer English translations. If they don’t, you can ask Google to translate the page for you—right-click on the page and choose “Translate to English” from the drop-down list. Additionally, being aware of currency conversion rates and potential foreign transaction fees when booking from abroad ensures you get the best value for your money. At the moment, there’s not a massive difference between Euros and US Dollars; however, it’s still worth converting the fares to your local currency.

Benefits of Train Travel Over Air Travel

Trains are more environmentally friendly than airplanes or cars on a per-passenger basis, making them a greener option for those concerned about sustainability while touring Europe. A standout benefit of Europe’s rail system is the efficient boarding process. Unlike airports where you might arrive hours in advance for baggage checks and security screenings if your train departure is at 9 am, you can typically arrive closer to that time without extensive waiting or security procedures. While some countries implement a simple luggage scan, others may have minimal to no security checks, streamlining your travel experience.

So, when considering your options to travel between European countries, consider grabbing train tickets and embarking on an unforgettable journey through Europe’s rail network, where convenience, affordability, and sustainability harmoniously converge. Whether indulging in a morning coffee in Brussels or immersing yourself in the scenic beauty along the Seine, the experience transcends mere transportation.

Taking the train in Ireland - what you need to know

Apr 19, 2024 • 11 min read

Traveling by train is one of Ireland ’s great if under-appreciated pleasures.

It’s a small island and the rail network is limited, so no journey is especially long – but riding the rails across the country is one of the loveliest ways to enjoy the rolling countryside.

Compared to its European counterparts, Irish trains aren’t especially spectacular, but this is a country that doesn’t need high-speed or sleeper trains: you roll along at a maximum of 160kph (99mph) and before you know it you’re on the other side of the island.

The particular nature of Irish demographics has shaped train travel in Ireland: with around a quarter of the population clustered in the greater Dublin region, it makes sense that most train journeys begin or end in the capital. In Northern Ireland the same is true of Belfast .

Irish trains might not be especially quick or super luxurious, but they’re an efficient and eco-friendly way of exploring the island – so long as your explorations are focused on the major cities and towns. Here is our essential guide to train travel in Ireland.

Overhead shot of trains on rails at a depot

The lowdown on rail travel in Ireland

Irish trains are efficient, relatively frequent and usually on time.  Irish Rail/Iarnród Éireann operates the entire network of trains in the Republic, from intercity trains linking the major urban centers to the busy commuter network that services the greater Dublin region.

There are two main lines into the west and three into the south and southwest; spurs off the main lines connect to a host of smaller towns throughout the country. There’s also a line to Belfast, from where  Translink services connect the city with the Antrim Coast and Derry (Londonderry) .

Within the greater Dublin region, a network of commuter services connects the capital with a host of suburbs and dormitory towns in the surrounding counties. Dublin’s coastline between the northside suburbs of Howth and Malahide and Greystones in County Wicklow is served by DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport) trains.

There are some notable gaps in the country’s rail network, with no services in counties Donegal , Monaghan and Cavan , and no trains into West Cork . Some towns – like Buttevant in Cork or Annacotty in Limerick – are on the rail line but they’re bypassed as they have no functioning station.

Ireland’s bigger train stations – including Cork , Limerick , Galway , Sligo, Belfast and the two in Dublin – are all pretty well stocked when it comes to picking up supplies and other assorted sundries for your journey. Most other stations will have a small shop.

Train tickets are relatively good value

The good news about traveling by train in Ireland is that it is relatively inexpensive compared to train travel in some places, such as the UK, for example. If you buy it online, a standard one-way fare between Dublin Heuston and Kent Station in Cork costs between €30–35, and around €55 in first class.

Online is the best place to buy your tickets for train travel in the Irish Republic. Not only do you get the best fares (with savings of up to 50% compared to buying the ticket at the station), but you can purchase your ticket up to 90 days in advance and reserve a seat when you do.

You have the option of collecting your bought ticket from a machine at the station as you’re boarding, or downloading a QR code at the point of purchase. If you wait to buy your ticket at the station, you’ll pay significantly more and have to get there early to queue up at the ticket kiosk.

For travel in Northern Ireland, you’re better off buying the ticket at the station as only a limited number of tickets are available online. Show up a short time before your intended departure time and just buy your ticket there.

Only a handful of services offer first class, but upgrading is relatively inexpensive. On average, expect to pay around €20–25 more to sit in first. There are three kinds of first class service on Irish trains. CityGold is on direct Dublin to Cork services, and includes an onboard host and a complimentary newspaper on selected early morning services. The Enterprise service between Dublin and Belfast offers the same, plus a fine breakfast. Premier Class is similar, but is only available on direct services between Dublin and Tralee and some Dublin to Cork trains.

Some discounts and offers apply

There are discounted fares for children and young adults aged between 19 and 25, as long as they have a valid discount card. Under 5s and those aged 66 and over travel for free.

The commuter network in the Greater Dublin area has a fare cap of €6 for travel between the capital and a host of towns in the surrounding counties.

There are two rail passes aimed at visitors. The Trekker Four Day (€88) offers unlimited travel for adults on all Irish Rail services on four consecutive days from the date of issue. The Explorer (adult/child €128/64) provides five days travel on all services in a 15-day window.

However, before investing in either, be sure that you plan on making the most out of it. The limited rail network means that connections are limited and traveling between some destinations involves backtracking: Cork and Waterford are both on the south coast, but to get from one to the other means travelling to Limerick, while Sligo and Westport are only 140km (87 miles) apart along the west coast, but to go between them by train you’ll have to travel through Dublin – which is on the other side of the country.

In Northern Ireland, the Sunday Fun Day Tracker ticket gives passengers unlimited train travel on a Sunday for £9 (£4.50 for children). Tickets are available from all ticket offices, the mLink ticketing app and from the conducter of the train.

A busy train platform in the evening

These are the busiest times to travel by train

Unsurprisingly, peak times for train travel coincide with busy rush hour periods. Early morning services to Dublin from cities including Cork, Galway and Limerick can be busy, especially if the train is due to arrive in Dublin around the start of the working day. Friday evening trains departing Dublin can also be quite busy. However, as online bookings also include the option of booking a seat, you’ll never have to stand.

The commuter network is busiest on weekdays between 7–9am and between 4:30–6:30pm as thousands of people travel in and out of work. You can’t prebook seats on these services, so plenty of people do end up standing. Keep an eye out on changing schedules, especially for weekend and holiday travel, as frequencies diminish.

The train network is limited, but it has some benefits over road travel

There are no rail links to any Irish airport, which means you’re relying on taxis, private cars or buses once you arrive in the country. Irish ferry ports are better connected to rail lines, however, and you can catch trains in Rosslare, Dublin and Larne; there is no rail link to Belfast Port.

If you want to reach the more remote corners of the island, then the Irish rail network is quite limited, and a car will give you the flexibility you need. However, rental fees can be very expensive and fuel is another considerable cost, with the price of unleaded and diesel hovering between €1.75 and €2 a liter. Parking is also pricey in all urban centers, especially Dublin.

Traveling by bus is the cheapest way to get around, but it can be a slow business, as most make lots of stops along the way. There are some direct express services, but they are at the mercy of traffic, which can also add considerable time to a journey compared to traveling by train. Plus, buses don’t have bathrooms, with those traveling longer distances relying entirely on rest stops.

A train passes through autumnal countryside

On board facilities vary depending on the type of train

There are two kinds of Irish trains: InterCity and commuter. InterCity trains are all the same – relatively modern with comfortable seats in standard class and fancier recliners in first – and they travel at speeds of up to 160kph (99mph). There’s no journey in Ireland that is longer than 2½ to 3 hours. Commuter trains are slightly older, with less comfortable seats; older trains are used on some small distance spur lines in rural areas and are very basic (facilities include seats and a toilet).

While Ireland’s flagship service is the one between Dublin and Cork, the fanciest train is the Enterprise service between Dublin Connolly and Belfast Lanyon Place, which is a joint venture between Irish Rail and Translink. This train is on a par with most services you’ll find in mainland Europe and first class is the most luxurious of any in the country.

All InterCity trains have three-pin sockets at every row where you can plug in a charger or a laptop. Most commuter trains in the greater Dublin area also have sockets. All trains have toilets and there is a cross-network wi-fi service operated by Irish Rail, but it is patchy and inconsistent. Translink has its own wi-fi network, which is accessible on all bus and rail services in the north, but, like in the Republic, you’re at the mercy of signal strength and contention levels.

Food options are pretty limited. There is a trolley service on the Dublin to Cork service, while the Enterprise between Dublin and Belfast operates a full service menu in a dedicated dining car; first class passengers also get a pretty good breakfast as part of their ticket.

Some trains on the Dublin to Cork route have a "quiet carriage", (usually Carriage G, marked in purple when booking) where the use of phones is prohibited and passengers are encouraged to keep noise levels down.

You can bring a bike on any Irish Rail train for free, although there are some restrictions during busy periods (such as sporting fixtures and concerts). The Dublin to Cork line is the only one to have a dedicated bike storage area; all other InterCity trains have (very) limited bicycle spaces within the passenger compartment – it’s not unusual for only two bikes to be allowed into the compartment, so be sure to book in advance. Bikes are not allowed on commuter and DART services during peak hours – before 10am and between 3:30–7pm Monday to Friday.

A train follows a scenic routes by the sea

There are many scenic train routes: here are the best

No matter where you are in Ireland you’re going to find a beautiful landscape or two, but some journeys are worth keeping your eyes wide open for.

Dublin to Sligo

Once you’ve gone past the huge suburban sprawl of the greater Dublin area, the landscapes get quite gentle; beyond Mullingar the train skirts alongside the edge of beautiful Lough Owel. For the best views, sit on the left-hand side of the train.

Dublin to Belfast

The Enterprise service is the best in the country, with the most comfortable seats and the best food options – especially in first class. The train skirts alongside the Irish Sea between Malahide and Balbriggan, so be sure to sit on that side as you travel (on the right-hand side if you’re traveling to Belfast).

Derry (Londonderry) to Coleraine

The Translink service between Northern Ireland’s second city and Coleraine is a stunner, a 40-minute journey along the Causeway Coast that comes with beautiful beaches, huge cliffs and unimpeded views out over the North Sea.

Downpatrick to Inch Abbey

It’s only a 10-minute journey, but the trip from Downpatrick in County Down to the monastic ruins of Inch Abbey takes place in a vintage steam train (or a 1960s diesel train) that chugs its way along the line, over the River Quoile and past the drumlin-specked landscape.

Cork to Cobh

One of Ireland’s most scenic trips is the 25-minute trip from Cork City to the seaside town of Cobh , which takes you along the river (sit on the right for the best views), past marshy Harper’s Island and over the bridges on Lough Mahon and the Slatty Water. You can always stop off at Fota and visit the  wildlife park  there.

Book in advance for wheelchair access to trains

All InterCity services are nominally accessible, but if you do need assistance you will need to book it in advance so that suitable arrangements can be made. This usually means that a conductor will have a ramp ready for wheelchair access, but we have also heard plenty of anecdotal evidence of staff simply lifting a wheelchair onto a train, which depending on the individual can either be a help or an annoying hindrance. Whatever you do, make sure to communicate your requirements before you travel as assistance is not guaranteed otherwise.

For passengers with learning difficulties or any issue where there may be a challenge with communication (such as Asperger’s or autism) Irish Rail staff are trained to recognize visual cue cards such as the  JAM card , which inform the interlocutor of the holder’s condition. JAM cards are available online or at mainline train stations in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford and Sligo.

Back on track: 3 benefits of train travel

Train travel amongst trees

Sustainability is more than just a buzzword. It's a necessity for a modern travel program.

As concerns about the impact of travel on the environment continue to grow, sustainable travel has become a hot topic – almost as hot as the melting ice caps., according to a recent study by travel company virtuoso , 82% of participants said the pandemic has made them want to travel more responsibly in the future. and one way to accomplish this taking the train., we know what you might be thinking – trains are slow and inconvenient. but don’t roll your eyes just yet. not only is train travel a greener option in comparison to air travel, it also offers unique benefits that you may not have considered. so, let's explore three reasons why you should take the train instead of boarding a two hour flight., 1. work on the go.

Picture this: you're on a train, cruising through dynamic landscapes, your laptop open in front of you. You're sipping on a coffee and typing away, with more legroom than you'd have on a plane and without the fear of turbulence spilling your drink. Meanwhile, your coworkers are seated nearby, also typing away or bouncing ideas off of each other. Sure, the ride may take a bit longer to get to your destination, but now you get to optimize every moment of your journey.

Unlike other forms of transportation, the train is a great place to get work done en route. It offers a smoother ride than a car, where you’d have to focus on the road, and a plane, where the cramped tray tables make responding to emails a nightmare. Plus, free WiFi and onboard charging stations mean you can stay connected and productive throughout your work journey. Not every airline can offer that.

And if you’re traveling as a team, the train makes it easier to interact and work together. That means less time coordinating logistics and more time prepping for that big presentation.

2. Low-stress meets accessibility

Let’s face it: Airports and TSA lines are a hassle at best . And who wants to go through that headache just for a 2-hour flight?

Taking the train is as easy as buying a ticket and hopping on board. No complicated check-in process required. And unlike flights, trains usually arrive and depart on time, so you don’t have to worry about unexpected delays that leave you scrambling to recalibrate your plans. Just keep in mind this means you’ll have to be on time every time . Otherwise, you might get stuck at the station.

And the best part about traveling by rail? Almost anyone can.

Trains offer a more accessible travel option for employees who experience flight anxiety or other accessibility challenges that make other forms of transportation difficult. For example, pregnant people can't fly during the third trimester. And when it comes to short-distance travel, some employees may have disabilities that prevent them from getting a driver's license or using ride-sharing services. Accessible Ubers aren’t available everywhere!

By offering train travel, you’re putting employees’ needs first and showing your travel program’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I).

3. Direct shot to your destination

Not every location has an airport – especially not smaller cities and towns. So if you have an event that’s anywhere but in a big city, you’ll have to spend additional time and money traveling from the airport to your hotel (and back). And that’s assuming you don’t also have to go through the hassle of layovers and connecting flights.

But when you travel by train, you’re typically on a direct route to your destination. Trains can be found pretty much everywhere and do run through small cities and towns. This means you’ll get much closer to where you need to be without that extra hour in a cab. It’s a one-and-done deal!

And when it comes to international travel, combining a plane with a train can help travelers avoid the stress of renting a car overseas…and subsequently needing to learn the rules of the road in a new country. Your travelers can just sit back, relax, and let the train take them exactly where they need to be!

Trains before planes

While taking the train may not always be the swiftest option, it is certainly one of the greenest. Riding the rails can be a great way to reduce your carbon footprint while also enjoying a stress-free and productive travel experience.

And if you're looking to make sustainable travel a priority for your organization, FCM Consulting is here to help. Our team of experts can work with you to develop a travel program that not only meets your sustainability goals but also meets the needs of your employees and your business.

The welcome bonus is pretty decent, too — new cardholders can currently earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 within the first three months of card membership — and the card's annual fee of $95 is quite reasonable considering you're also getting a statement credit up to $100 to cover Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® membership and two complimentary visits per year to any Capital One Lounges (or any of the more than 100+ Plaza Premium Lounges through the Partner Lounge Network)(see rates and fees ).

Who's this for? Similar to the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , the Chase Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card can be used to rack up Ultimate Rewards® points — 3X points per dollar on your first $150,000 worth of spending in business categories such as travel; shipping; cable, phone and internet services; and advertising expenses, then an unlimited 1X points per dollar for all other purchases.

You can then use those points to cover additional elements of your trip, such as flights, hotel stays or rental cars by booking travel directly through the Chase Travel SM — your points will be worth 25% more that way — or by transferring and redeeming them with any of Chase's many airline and hotel travel partners, including World of Hyatt, IHG, JetBlue and British Airways, among others.

New cardholders can currently earn a welcome bonus of 100,000 bonus points after spending $8,000 within the first three months of account opening, which translates to about $1,250 in travel when redeemed through Chase Travel SM . There is a modest annual fee of $95, but there are no foreign transaction fees for using it abroad. The card also offers fraud and purchase protections and additional employee cards to help you stay on top of all your business needs.

More ways to save money with Amtrak

In general, the earlier you can book your ticket, the better, especially on Amtrak, which releases its schedule 11 months in advance so you'll have plenty of time to plan. You can also save more by making some obvious choices, such as traveling in coach instead of business or first class, or toughing it out long-distance in a regular seat rather than splurging on private Roomette or Bedroom accommodations. Otherwise, here are some more things to be aware of if you're trying to stick to a budget-friendly ride.

Choose your fare class wisely

Amtrak offers several ticketing options depending on your route and what's available when you're booking (which is why buying your tickets early is so important), and each of them offers different perks and policies regarding changes and cancellations.

  • Saver: Non-refundable fares, usually the cheapest, with fees that may apply for changing or canceling your ticket
  • Value: Fares with refund options and no change fees; often second-cheapest
  • Flexible: Fully refundable fares before departure, with no fees for changes or cancellations; typically the most expensive option

Depending on your travel needs and financial situation, it might be worth splurging for a more refundable ticket if you think there might be a need to change or cancel it. On the other hand, budget-conscious travelers might be more apt to risk it all for a cheaper, non-refundable Saver fare.

Take advantage of Amtrak Guest Rewards perks

Don't forget to sign up for Amtrak Guest Rewards , the train company's free loyalty program, which gives you access to perks such as a 25% points bonus on business class travel and Acela business class travel, a 50% points bonus on travel in Acela first class, the ability to earn 2X points per dollar on Amtrak purchases and points-earning opportunities through its partners.

From there, if you travel on Amtrak often and earn enough tier-qualifying points, you can earn status :

  • Select: Starting at 5,000 tier-qualifying points, you'll score all the perks of being a regular member, plus a 25% bonus on Amtrak travel, two one-class upgrades, two 10% discount coupons, exclusive offers, priority call handling and two single-visit passes to Amtrak Lounges
  • Select Plus: Starting at 10,000 tier-qualifying points, you'll get the same perks as the previous tier, with a few differences — a 50% points bonus on Amtrak travel, four one-class upgrades and two companion coupons.
  • Select Executive: Starting at 20,000 tier-qualifying points, you'll have the same perks as the previous tier, but with a 100% points bonus on Amtrak travel, four one-class upgrades (plus another one every time you hit the 3,000 tier-qualifying points mark) and one coupon for Auto Train Priority Vehicle Offloading.

Unfortunately, most loyalty programs no longer let you transfer points to Amtrak Guest Rewards , so your only real option is to call 1-866-313-9635 and transfer Audience Rewards ShowPoints at a 1:1 ratio in 1,000-point increments.

Otherwise, you can earn more points by shopping through the Amtrak Guest Rewards shopping portal or booking hotels and rental cars through Amtrak's partners and, of course, booking Amtrak tickets or signing up for one of its co-branded credit cards. You can also pick up more points by shopping with a litany of retail partners including 1-800-Flowers, Teleflora, Apple, Survey Points Club, QVC, The Home Depot, eBags, NRG Home, Vinesse Wines, Audience Rewards or the Rail Passengers Association.

Find the best credit card for you by reviewing offers in our  credit card marketplace  or get personalized offers via  CardMatch™ .

Keep an eye on Amtrak's deals and promotions

Amtrak is known for having sales, so it's a good idea to check its deals page from time to time, which lets you search for specials by region. Amtrak recently offered a double points promo on fall travel , for instance, while other deals are related to newly launched routes, buy-one-get-one-free specials on certain segments or 30% off Acela bookings made at least 14 days in advance, among others. In general, though, you'll typically save 20% by booking your tickets at least a week or two ahead.

Save with group or multi-ride rail passes

If you're going to be traveling in a group —with family members, friends or co-workers — you might be able to save by booking your tickets with Amtrak's Share Fares feature, which offers discounts ranging from 17% off for groups of three to 60% off for groups of eight when you book at least two days ahead.

Another option, if you're going to be doing several trips back and forth to the same place within a certain timeframe, is to opt for multi-ride passes — monthly, 10-ride or 6-ride — which allow you to pay a discounted fare and commute more often between two cities.

For those who want to go big or go home with Amtrak, the USA Rail Pass allows you to ride 10 segments over the course of 30 days on many of its most scenic routes for $499 per person. Use the pass to plan a few weekend getaways from your hometown or plan an epic rail journey from coast to coast with a few stops in between — it's up to you.

Another option, the California Rail Pass , offers access to The Golden State's most beautiful train rides for a flat rate of $159 per adult and $79.50 per child, letting you travel anytime for 7 days within a consecutive 21-day period.

How to save more on international train travel

When booking train rides abroad, remember to be flexible. In some places, rail lines frequented by locals might be slower-paced but can save you a few bucks compared to faster trains along popular tourist routes. Try to book in advance whenever you can and consider investing in a rail pass — it's worth checking websites such as Eurail or Rail Europe if you'll be visiting multiple European countries, for instance — if you know you're going to be spending a lot of time on trains during your trip.

Check for deals and discounts, especially if you're a student, senior or traveling with children, and see if regional passes are available if you're sticking to one country or a particular area within a country. Start by checking the tourism websites of the places you're going to see what is recommended since every destination is different.

Bottom line

Though not every travel rewards card allows you to transfer your points directly to Amtrak — except of course for the two Amtrak co-branded credit cards on this list — you can still use flexible rewards-earning cards to rack up enough points to pay for other portions of your trip, such as flights, hotel stays or rental cars. By using certain cards to pay for your Amtrak tickets, you'll be able to earn even more points to help fund future travels.

Before signing up for a new credit card, it's a good idea to check your credit score so you can identify any issues and get a better idea of what your chances are for approval. Make sure you're able to spend within your budget, especially if the card you're interested in has a steep annual fee and think about whether or not you'll be able to use all of its benefits enough to justify adding it.

The Maya Train Will Get You to All of Yucatán’s Best Spots. But Not Yet.

In December, the train began running on its first route through Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. On a five-day journey a few months later, the author encountered enthusiasm, and scheduling hiccups.

A singular train track, with one short train, cuts through a lush deep forest.

By Elisabeth Malkin

Elisabeth Malkin has been visiting the Yucatán Peninsula for three decades.

I stepped off the platform at the gleaming new Maxcanú train station, eager to see the magnificent Maya archaeological site of Uxmal. All I needed was a taxi to take me there, a trip of about 30 miles away.

There are no taxis, said the stationmaster, as we stood on the polished limestone floors of the high-ceilinged station, which was cool and breezy despite the brilliant late-morning sun outside. And I was the third person in two weeks to get off at Maxcanú expecting to reach Uxmal, he said.

I was midway through a five-day trip to explore the brand-new Maya Train and several of its destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico . Designed to run 965 miles (1,554 kilometers) around a loop of 34 stations when completed, the train will whisk passengers in cool comfort through colonial cities, archaeological sites, splashy resorts and tropical forests.

Now I was stunned. Wrangling a taxi has never been a problem in Mexico. But the drivers gathered in the main square of Maxcanú offered only beat-up vans that hopscotch through small towns, where I might or might not find a taxi to Uxmal. The next van was leaving in 45 minutes.

Yucatán’s layers of history have long held me spellbound. During earlier car trips, I have clambered up deserted Maya temples and palaces, stepped into the cool naves of massive 16th-century churches and visited restored haciendas, testaments of the ostentation — and hardship — of the peninsula’s 19th-century plantation economy. Traveling by train, I thought, would allow me to steep myself in more of that history.

But as I found in Maxcanú, a train won’t necessarily get you to where you want to go.

During my February trip, I traveled on the only route then available, an east-west leg that opened in December and runs from Cancún to Mérida, and then south through the port city of Campeche to the Maya site of Palenque (a short route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen opened last month, with three trains a day). I encountered scheduling confusion, unfinished stations and a dearth of trains — just two operating daily each way between Cancún and Campeche, and only one to Palenque. Overnight sleepers and special dining trains seem years away.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considers the Maya Train his showcase development project, and wants to inaugurate the rest of the train before he leaves office on October 1. Based on my experience, that goal seems elusive.

A $29-billion route through the jungle

I started my journey in Cancún, where in the pre-dawn gloom the station hovered like a glowing spaceship. An attendant scanned the ticket I had bought online and a half-dozen more pointed me toward my tourist-class car, which was about a quarter full. I planned to go to Campeche, about 300 miles away, stopping once each day. At 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) an hour, the train covers the route in about six hours, the same as a car. (When construction is complete, the train’s speed should increase to 160 kilometers an hour.)

The car’s wide windows looked out at a wall of low jungle. The blue-green seats were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows. I bought a very good cappuccino at the snack bar, but declined the plastic-wrapped sandwiches. The rest of the merchandise was fruit cups, milk boxes and junk food.

The train will ultimately cost much more than the $29 billion budgeted so far, and it’s not the first time ambitious planners have alighted on the region. Cancún was once a tiny fishing village, selected half a century ago as a tourist hub. Last year 10 million international tourists flew into its airport, more than the airports of Mexico City, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta combined.

But uncontrolled growth has stressed the Caribbean coast’s fragile environment. The Maya Train, scientists warn , will push those problems south, threatening the area’s water supply, its unique system of underground limestone caves and its vast nature reserves.

Mr. López Obrador has charged ahead, handing the train over to the military , and arguing that it will spread Cancún’s wealth and attract new visitors. Mexico received more than 42 million overseas tourists last year and they spent almost $31 billion .

Local governments see an opportunity. “The train will allow people to disperse throughout the peninsula,” said Michelle Fridman, the tourism secretary for Yucatán state, which promotes dozens of attractions far beyond highlights like Mérida and Chichén Itzá .

Now that the train is operating, transport companies will begin to connect stations with lesser-known sites nearby, she said.

It’s fair to ask whether the train is the most effective way to develop the peninsula’s tourism. Tour companies already run trips to many sites from major cities, which are well served by buses. Driving a rental car through most of the area is considered safe , according to U.S. State Department travel guidance .

Route of Mexico’s Maya Train

Canceled trip.

It took two hours (and one time-zone change) to reach Valladolid, a colonial city of handsome streets and ancient churches, where I bought the rest of my tickets at the station. A tourist-class ticket from Cancún to Valladolid costs 472 pesos (around $28) for foreigners and 355 pesos (around $21) for Mexicans. First class, with wider seats, costs 755.50 pesos and 566.50 pesos, and discounts are available for older travelers and residents of the five states along the train’s route. (A first-class bus from downtown Cancún to Valladolid costs between 222 and 344 pesos, depending on the time of day, and takes half an hour longer.)

It was impossible to run the new Maya Train tracks into dense city centers and the Valladolid station, like the rest, was outside the urban core. A waiting bus took disembarking passengers downtown, a 15-minute ride for 35 pesos.

That day I toured Ek Balam , the site of a ninth-century Maya kingdom that is dominated by a 100-foot palace distinguished by a facade of carvings depicting winged warriors, stylized animal features and geometric patterns bordered by giant fangs. Admission to the site includes entry to the X-Canché cenote, one of thousands of limestone sinkholes that were sacred to the Maya.

Later that afternoon, I was wandering through the Museum of Ethnic Clothing, a private collection of traditional dress, embroidery and hats, when a WhatsApp message from the ticket office blinked on my phone. My train scheduled for the following day was canceled.

I decided to deal with the problem in the morning and enjoy the city. As I wandered past the antique shops and boutique hotels of the elegant Calzada de los Frailes, it was clear that Valladolid’s tourism, and the infrastructure to handle it, was well established. The Maya Train is simply an alternative way to reach a city that tourists discovered years ago.

‘We’re on the Tren Maya!’

In the morning, I found that my train had not been canceled, but the station for which I had a ticket, Tixkokob, was closed. I got off instead one stop earlier at Izamal, known for its ocher streets and the giant Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, built atop the ruins of a pyramid.

During the 90-minute ride, I heard widespread enthusiasm among fellow travelers who expressed a willingness to give the train time to work out the kinks. “We’re an experiment,” said Oliva Escobedo Ochoa, 64, who was vacationing from her home in central Mexico.

Leticia Iliassich, 57, who is Mexican, was traveling with her Croatian husband along with relatives from Mexico and Croatia. They had initially been scheduled on an earlier train to Mérida that had been canceled. “We knew that it was a new project,” she said. “We don’t mind.”

The group had already sent a video to friends declaring, “We’re on the Tren Maya!”

At the Izamal station I hitched a 15-minute ride into the town center with a man who had asked me to take his photo alongside the train and his father. From there I negotiated a taxi to Hacienda San Lorenzo Aké, a working hacienda that still turns the fiber from an agave plant called henequén into coarse rope. Global demand for henequén, known as Yucatán’s “green gold,” brought fantastic wealth to the region in the mid-19th century, speckling the peninsula with more than 1,000 haciendas. ( Many are now sumptuous hotels.)

Where geometry, nature and the divine merge

It was during my third day that I found myself stuck in Maxcanú, after a 90-minute train ride from Izamal. The stationmaster, an army captain, offered me a ride to Uxmal, just as he had to the stranded tourists before me.

Eying Uxmal’s 4 p.m. final ticket sale, I accepted.

My situation made it clear just how distant the Maya Train’s promises are for tourists seeking to explore more of Yucatán. In time, that will change, said Ms. Fridman, the tourism secretary. “The idea is to have more hotels along the train line,” she said. “That will happen little by little.”

But Uxmal , among the most stunning of the Maya sites, made up for the inconvenience. Uxmal’s grand buildings are faced with intricate decorative masks as well as friezes in which geometry, nature and the divine merge. New plaques at each structure offer detailed information in English and Spanish, part of the government’s investment in improving displays at Maya sites for the train project.

Most tourists either take day trips by car or bus to Uxmal from Mérida or stay at one of three nearby hotels. As I finished dinner at my hotel, the dining room began to fill up: 47 Polish tourists had arrived.

Panama hats and a cramped van

My plan for the day was to go by taxi to Bécal, a town where Panama hats are woven in limestone caves to keep the fibers soft, and then pick up the afternoon train in nearby Calkiní for the port city of Campeche.

But I spent so much time watching the hat-making demonstration and then fitting my new hat and buying gifts that we set off with little time to reach the station. To my chagrin, I missed the train, the last one of the day.

On Calkiní’s central square, I found a van that was leaving for Campeche. Cost: 65 pesos. Time: about 1 hour and 20 minutes, similar to what I would have spent on the train. Of course, I was trapped in a cramped seat and had to listen to the driver’s choice of sentimental ballads, but I was dropped off in downtown Campeche, close to my hotel.

The next day, I toured the Museum of Maya Archaeology , an expertly curated collection that included haunting jade funeral masks, glyphs and delicate ceramic figures.

José Madrigal, 45, an engineer from Fremont, Calif., was trying to make Maya pottery interesting for his twin sons. The boys had just turned 5 and their birthday present had been a ride on the Maya Train. “They love trains,” Mr. Madrigal said. Then the family moved on, keeping up a brisk clip through the museum. They had another train to catch.

Should you take the train?

Yes, if you are traveling between larger stations. The train also offers a way to get to Palenque, which is harder to reach and has roads with security concerns. Travelers can stow bicycles on board.

To see train times, check the destinations on the website . You cannot buy tickets online more than a week in advance. But when you finally board, the ride is smooth — and the coffee is excellent.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card * -- Wells Fargo’s latest and best travel card -- recently launched with an impressive set of features. Its competitive rewards, welcome bonus and redemption options take aim at incumbent travel credit cards from Chase, American Express and Capital One.

What gives Wells Fargo’s first foray into the point-transfer space an edge is that you don’t have to book travel in a portal to earn the highest rewards rates.

Here’s why we think the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey could go toe-to-toe with some of the best travel credit cards, plus three insider tips to help you decide if you should add it to your credit card lineup.

Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect with the Autograph Journey:

  • Earn 60,000 welcome bonus rewards points after spending $4,000 in purchases within three months of account opening.

Here’s a rundown of four facts we discovered about the Autograph Journey that you should know when deciding whether to apply.

1. You can transfer points with Wells Fargo point-based cards

The launch of the Autograph Journey also marks the first transferable points program from Wells Fargo, which joins other card issuers like Chase and Capital One, which have their own pooling programs .

Autograph Journey will be able to do a points transfer with the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card . This is especially notable since the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card offers bonus rewards in different categories than the Autograph Journey.

For example, the Autograph card earns unlimited 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, plus 1x points on other purchases. So you can maximize your point earning across different categories, then transfer your points to your Autograph Journey account to access premium travel redemptions.

2. It offers more options for earning bonus miles on travel than some competitors

The Autograph Journey will offer more flexibility than many travel rewards cards when it comes to earning more points on travel purchases. For example, cardholders earn unlimited 5x points on hotels booked directly with hotel brands and 4x points on airfare booked with airlines.
