How to Visit Great Rann of Kutch: Essential Travel Guide

kutch bhuj tour itinerary

Manish/Getty Images

The Rann of Kutch, also known as the Great Rann of Kutch (there's a  Little Rann of Kutch  as well), is a remarkable place to visit in Gujarat. Much of it consists of one of the world's largest salt desert, measuring about 10,000 square kilometers (3,800 square miles). What makes it even more amazing is that the salt desert is underwater during the main  monsoon season in India . For the remaining eight months of the year, it's an enormous stretch of packed white salt. Here's all the information you need to visit it.

The vast and arid expanse that is the Great Rann of Kutch lies to the north of the Tropic of Cancer (you'll pass through it and see the sign), at the top of the Kutch district. The northern boundary forms the border between India and Pakistan.

The Great Rann is best approached via  Bhuj.  Dhordo, approximately an hour and a half north of Bhuj, is being developed by the Gujarat government as the Gateway to the Rann. Dhordo is on the edge of the salt desert.

The Rann begins to dry up in October every year, steadily transforming into the desolate and surreal salt desert. The tourist season runs until March. Nearby accommodations close at the end of March and don't reopen until November. If you want to avoid the crowds and have a more peaceful experience, go towards the end of the tourist season in March. You can still visit the salt desert in April and May though, on a day trip from Bhuj. However, it's very hot during the day. Plus, there's an absence of basic facilities for tourists (food, water and toilets). You'll pretty much have the salt desert to yourself though!

It's best to head out into the desert only in the early morning or evening, otherwise the salt can be blinding. You can take a moonlight camel safari into the desert. The full moon is the most magical time of month to experience it.

Getting There

Resorts in the area will arrange transport for you from Bhuj. There are a couple of ways of getting to Bhuj.

  • If taking a train, it's most convenient from  Mumbai  (15 hours).
  • Bhuj has a domestic airport. Air India flies there non-stop from Mumbai (2 hours).
  • Buses to Bhuj are available from many places in and around Gujarat, and the road is in good condition.

If you want to do the Great Rann on a day trip from Bhuj, you can hire a cab or motor bike. Alternatively, small group tour packages are available.

Going on a guided tour takes the hassle out of planning and sightseeing.  Kutch Adventures India  is based in Bhuj, and is involved in rural and responsible tourism in the area. Owner Kuldip will put together a bespoke itinerary for you, including visits to surrounding handicraft villages (which Kutch is renowned for).

Permits for Visiting the Rann of Kutch

The Rann of Kutch is a sensitive area, due to its proximity to the Pakistani border. Therefore, a permit is required to visit the salt desert. This can be obtained on the way at the Bhirandiyara village (famous for  mawa , a sweet made from milk) checkpoint, about 55 kilometers (34 miles) from Bhuj. The cost is 100 rupees for an adult, 50 rupees for a child aged six to 12 years, 25 rupees for a motor bike and 50 rupees for a car. You'll need to submit a photocopy of your ID, plus show the original. Do note that the checkpoint may not open until late morning (around 11 a.m.) and is not open at all during the off-season. Alternatively, Indian citizens can now get permits online here.

You must present the permit to the officers at the army checkpoint at the entry to the salt desert about 45 minutes further on from Bhirandiyara village.

Where to Stay

It's most convenient to stay in Dhordo or nearby Hodka.

The most popular option is the  Gateway to Rann Resort  at Dhordo. It's made up of characterful Kutchi  bhungas  (mud huts), traditionally crafted and decorated with handicrafts. Rates start from 4,500 rupees for an air-conditioned double, per night.

The Gujarat government has also set up tourist accommodations, the  Toran Rann Resort , opposite the army checkpoint near the entrance to the salt desert. This resort is closest to the salt desert, although the location is not particularly scenic.  Bhunga  accommodations cost 4,500-5,500 rupees per night, plus tax. Breakfast and dinner are included.

Another recommended option is the  Shaam-e-Sarhad  (Sunset at the Border) Village Resort in Hodka. The resort is owned and managed by the local residents. You can choose to stay in eco-friendly mud tents (3,400 rupees per night for a double, including meals) or traditional  bhungas  (4,800 rupees per night for a double, including meals). Both have attached bathrooms and running water, although hot water is provided only in buckets. Family cottages are also available. Visits to local artist villages are a highlight.

The Rann Utsav

Gujarat Tourism holds a  Rann Ustav  festival, which begins at the start of November and extends until the end of February. A tent city with hundreds of luxury tents is set up near the Gateway to Rann Resort at Dhordo for visitors, along with rows of food and handicraft stalls. The package price includes sightseeing trips to surrounding attractions. Activities offered included camel cart rides, ATV rides, para motoring, rifle shooting, kids' entertainment zone, spa treatments, and cultural shows. Unfortunately, the festival has become increasingly commercialized in recent years, which has resulted in pollution and garbage in the area. Some people complain that it's ruined the atmosphere. If this is a concern, ideally plan to visit after the festival is over.

Other Ways to See the Rann of Kutch

If you want to see the Rann of Kutch from a different perspective, Kalo Dungar (Black Hill) offers a panoramic view from 462 meters above sea level. It's the highest point in Kutch and you can see all the way across to the Pakistani border. Kalo Dungar is accessible via the village of Khavda, which is 25 kilometers (16 miles) away and around 70 kilometers (44 miles) from Bhuj. This village is home to artisans who specialize in block printing, including ajrakh block printing from Pakistan. It's best to take your own transport as public transport is infrequent. The old Lakhpat Fort (140 kilometers/87 miles from Bhuj) also provides a fabulous view of the Rann of Kutch.

Sunset in White Rann

Bhuj, White Rann and Handicraft Villages – A two days itinerary in Kutch, Gujarat

Gujarat, the westernmost state of India, is popular for its non-spicy vegetarian food, handicrafts and, the White Rann. In the Kutch district, one can find all three splendours of Gujarat. It is the westernmost part of Gujarat and shares an international border with Pakistan. Bhuj is the most important city of the region. Bhuj, along with other parts of Kutch, suffered a devastating earthquake in the year 2001. The local government, in a bid to resurrect Kutch, has since then extensively promoted all that Kutch has on offer to tourists — The Great Rann of Kutch (White Rann), the unique handicrafts of Kutch and the the place’s historical significance.

Visiting Kutch properly takes at least one week. The main reason for this being the  huge distance between places. In this itinerary, the following are covered: Bhuj, Bhujodi, Ajhrakhpur, Nirona, Ludiya and the White Rann.

How to reach Kutch

Ideally, Bhuj should be the base city for a Kutch trip.

By flight : Bhuj has an airport which is served by some airlines; however, flights are generally very costly. Ahmedabad is the budget option.

By train : Bhuj is the nearest and most convenient railhead in Kutch. Bhuj is well connected to major cities like Mumbai, Delhi and even Kolkata.

By road : Ahmedabad is the nearest major city with good road connectivity. State and private buses regularly ply on the Ahmedabad-Bhuj route. If you intend to rent a car and self drive on the Kutch trip, then Ahmedabad is the city from where you should do it. Self driving car rental services are absent in Bhuj city. However, scooters and motorcycles can be rented from Bhuj city for multi-day Kutch trips.

Why Bhuj should not be underestimated

In a bid to see the White Rann, visitors often overlook the touristic delights that Bhuj can offer. It is a small town which grew around the Hamirsar Lake. We visited Bhuj on the first week of March and found the lake mostly dried up. A walk through its narrow alleys and sleepy neighbourhoods disclosed to us the town’s fondness for cows and bulls. They are found roaming the streets everywhere and usually they have elaborately curved horns. Once in a while, we came across half destroyed buildings which must have been someone’s home before the earthquake. The deep cracks on the walls of some houses spoke of the narrow escapes their residents had had.

Aina Mahal (Timing: 9AM – 11.45AM ; 3PM-5.45PM, Thursday closed) – Aina Mahal was constructed under the rule of Maharao Lakhpatji by the talented Ramsinh Malam. Ramsinh had spent 18 years in Holland and had acquired a fine knowledge of European artwork. Aina Mahal lives up to its name which means ‘the palace of mirrors’. In the earthquake of 2001, Aina Mahal suffered some serious damage. However, a part of it was restored and can be visited by tourists. Some of the things to lookout for in Aina Mahal includes the Nagpanchami Ashwari scroll — a 47 feet long scroll describing a royal procession, the Fuvanra Mahal, the Hall of Mirrors and the Hira Mahal.

Entry fee is INR 20 per person and INR 50 per camera (be it DSLR or phone camera). We carried a DSLR with us and paid INR 50 for it. Once we were inside, we tried shooting videos with our phone camera, but we were not allowed to do so. There is no guide service, or any literature which you can consult before taking the tour. The explanations are not enough and sometimes the script is Gujarati. It would take a maximum of 1.5 hours to explore Aina Mahal including photography.

Aina Mahal, Bhuj

Prag Mahal (Timing: 9.30AM – 12.15PM ; 3PM – 5.45PM) – Prag Mahal lies adjacent to Aina Mahal. Its construction started during the regime of Rao Pragmalji II and ended under the rule of his son. Prag Mahal exhibits a Gothic style of architecture. The design was headed by Colonel Henry Saint Wilkins. The marbles and artisans involved in the construction of this palace were sourced from Italy. Just like Aina Mahal, this palace too suffered extensive damage and most of the palace is off-the limits for tourists. During our visit, only one hall and two small rooms on the first floor were open for public. The hall had a collection of stuffed animals which were probably hunted by the royals. Chandeliers, stained glass windows, huge mirror and chairs were some of the other accessories. The small rooms contained wardrobes, dressing units, carriages, chairs, tables, kitchen equipments, models of a ship building business in Mandvi and a wooden mannequin head on which the turban of the king was prepared. A clock tower adorns the external walls of the Prag Mahal. It is possible for visitors to climb up to the top of the tower and enjoy the vista of Bhuj city.

Entry fee is INR 30 per person and INR 50 per camera. Car parking charge is INR 30. 1.5 hour is more than enough to explore Prag Mahal including photo sessions. The external walls of Prag Mahal and Aina Mahal do not speak much about its royalty. The premises of the palaces flaunt some half destroyed structures like a well, outhouse and dangerously dangling balconies.

Prag Mahal, Bhuj

Ajrakhpur (handicraft village) –  Ajrakhpur is 15 kilometres away from Bhuj and a private vehicle is definitely recommended to take one from Bhuj to Ajrakhpur. The village is where the Ajrakh block printers live and practise their art. The Ajrakh block printed sarees take a minimum of 14 days to complete. It involves several meticulous steps and extensive use of indigo. By visiting Ajrakhpur, you can actually see the artisans performing their jobs. Visit the workshops which are mostly attached to their residences and check out the collection at the retail outlets. After all, how often do we come across an entire village engaged in one form of profession?

Allot atleast 1.5 hours to explore Ajrakhpur. If possible, ask for Ismail Mohammad Khatri. Visit his workshop and talk to him. The artisans of Ajrakhpur allow genuinely interested travellers to check out their workshop for free. Starting price of sarees hover around INR 3000 and jackets are for INR 1800.

Ajrakh block printed fabric

Bhujodi (handicraft village) – If Ajrakhpur is famous for its Ajrakh style of block printed fabric; Bhujodi is popular for its weaver community. Bhujodi is about 14 kilometres away from Bhuj. The spinning wheel is actively used here to manufacture thread from yarn. The crafters create fabric from wool. They gladly give all tourists who land at their doorstep a sneak peek into their workshop and explain in detail all the processes involved. Shawls, stoles, decorative bed covers are their specializations. No matter how successful the entrepreneurs are, they still seek the suggestions of the village elders before taking any major art related decision.

Allot atleast 1.5 hour to explore Bhujodi. I walked into the workshop of Vankar Vishram Valji. His son answered all my inquisitive questions with patience, showed me around his workshop and let me pore over his collections. He can be reached at +91 9408305584/ +91 98790 24556 ( [email protected] ). Prices of articles start at INR 500.

Charkha in Bhujodi

Bhujio Dungar – One of the lesser known attractions of the city includes the Bhujio Dungar or Bhujio Hill. It lies in the eastern part of the city. A fortification runs throughout the perimeter of this hill. On top is a small shrine dedicated to the snake God, Bhujang Nag. Several flights of steep staircases take one to the top of the Bhujio Dungar, at the doorstep of the temple. It offers a bird’s eye view of the entire city of Bhuj and is the best spot to bask in sunrises and sunsets.

We attempted climbing the stairs just before sunset. The task needs a decent amount of physical fitness. Do not try climbing up if you are unfit, or allow a lot more time to take sufficient breaks. The incredible view, the silhouette sunset and the pleasant breeze, made up for the tough climb. It is possible to walk on the fortification from one end to the other. It is advisable that one should climb down before dark; however, the staircases are lit up at night. Exploration should take approximately 2 hours and entry is free of cost, of course.

Bhujio Dungar, Bhuj

Chhatedi – Bhuj surprised us with the unique features it possesses. The Chhatedi or Cenotaphs of Bhuj are one of a kind in India. Sadly, much of it was destroyed in the earthquake and reduced to rubble. But many still stand in an intact or semi-intact form. Some of the scenes of the visually stunning Bollywood movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam were shot here. The problem, which is persistent with all other architectural landmarks of Bhuj, continues even here – the significance of the landmarks is not well documented. The Chhatedi built by the royals of Kutch is supposed to be a memorial place for all those soldiers who died at war and whose mortal remains were never recovered. Tomb-like structures with elaborate artwork erected in honour of the deceased came to be known as the Chhatedi. Admission is free and it remains open throughout the day. It is advisable to visit this spot in the first hour or last hour of the day to avoid burning in the Sun. Adjacent to the Chhatedi is a garden and the handful of shady trees there are the only resort to escape the sunshine. Chhatedi can be explored within 0.5-1 hour duration.

Chattedi, Bhuj

Ramkund Stepwell – Literally tucked in the centre of the city, surrounded on all sides by residential houses, this is hands down the most unheard of attraction in Bhuj. It is a small square stepwell with Hindu mythological characters etched on its wall. The ancient stepwell of Bhuj does not appear on Google Maps. It is nearby the Kutch Museum. Entry is free and it can be visited all day long.

We found the stepwell to be in a sordid state. We were the only visitors, there were no caretakers and the water was extremely dirty and stinky. Reserve 15 minutes for this ancient stepwell.

Ramkund, Bhuj

Nirona Village (handicraft village) – Nirona village is a hub of handicrafts. The village boasts of three artforms and each stands apart from the other. The village looks like just any other Indian village but behind the closed doors, the hands of extraordinary artisans are always at work. Block at least 3-4 hours for Nirona in your itinerary.

The Rogan Artists of Nirona — Ideally, your first stop should be the Rogan artists of Nirona at the residence of Sumar D. Khatri (+91 9998788855). In the entire world Rogan Art is practised only in Nirona Village by the Khatri family. The colours used for this art is manufactured using castor oil. But the detailed manufacturing process is a secret kept well guarded by the family members. The technique of how the painting is done freehand over the cloth using just a pin is worth accolades. The master craftsmen give live demos to all travellers who express an interest in their art. Buying is optional. Most of the products are very expensive and they are aware that not everyone can afford them. But that doesn’t stop them from giving the demo. Mr. Sumar can be reached through Whatsapp too. If you intend to visit in high season, it would be better if you make a call and set up a prior appointment. You can easily spend about an hour in the Khatri workshop.

After an elaborate one-to-one session of an hour, we bought the cheapest product that was available — a handbag worth INR 500. But, in our rush, we forgot to actually pay Sumar and left his house. Two minutes later, we rushed back and paid him. But I was shocked that he never even asked for the money. Yes, this is the level of their hospitality.

Rogan Art in Nirona

The Copper Bell Makers of Nirona — A short walking distance away from the Khatri household is the workshop of Luhar Faruk (+91 9558069627). They specialize in making handmade copper bells. They do not use welding to join the various parts of the bells but they use the method of interlocking — hammering in the joints in a specific way. The entire family helps in running the business, including the women. The bells are quite affordable (price starts at INR 50) and just like the Khatri household, the Luhars too welcome everybody and give them a demo. Allot an hour for the copper bell makers of Nirona.

Copper bell makers of Nirona

The Lacquer artists of Nirona — About 10 minutes walk away from the Luhars is the residences of the Lacquer artists of Nirona. Lacquer art is practised by the Wada tribe and the entire tribe lives together, in close proximity to each other. The paint used in this art is obtained by mixing the sap of Rhus tree with natural and artificial colours. The colour is applied to wooden objects like kitchen utensils – spoons and spatulas. Floral patterns and geometric shapes are painted over the objects. Just like the other artists of Nirona, the Lacquer artists also provide a free demo. The Wada tribe appears to be somewhat primitive in their lifestyle and economically weak.

Dedicate about half an hour to them. We bought a colourful spatula for INR 300. When we made the purchase, young women of the tribe suddenly rushed beside us, exhibiting their own handicraft dolls. But it was obviously not possible for us to buy from everyone.

Lacquer art of Nirona

Kalo Dungar and magnetic hill —Kutch features with flat, straight roads. Kalo Dungar is the highest point in Kutch. The road to Kalo Dungar is the first time you will see any elevation. A certain part of the road is supposed to have a magnetic field around it where cars can move uphill even with their engine shut. The place is well labelled, please keep your eyes open and do not miss switching the engine of the vehicle off at this point to observe this rare phenomenon. On the hilltop there is a temple. The Dattatreya temple is 400 years old; the aura inside the place is extremely soothing. The area around the temple has been developed to cheer up tourists. It offers a panoramic view of the Rann of Kutch Lake and the White Rann. Salt deposits are clearly visible on the shore of the lake as swathes of white. Visiting this place in the afternoon is not an issue even under the scorching Sun owing to its windiness. Just a few kilometres away from Kalo Dungar lies the international border with Pakistan and hence visitors are not allowed to go beyond Kalo Dungar. There is a rest house or Dharamshala building in the temple complex of Kalo Dungar where travellers can pay and stay (+91 9426160007). It is recommended to schedule your visit to Kalo Dungar during afternoon and have the Prasad served in the temple as lunch.

Grant yourself about an hour or two for Kalo Dungar. During our research we learnt that it is possible to go beyond Kalo Dungar, up till ‘friendship bridge’, if we can arrange another special permit for it. The road to it is mostly barren, with uniform landscape, and the journey is long. Also, hikes to Flamingo city can be arranged, which is hours away from Kalo Dungar, with a special permit and a guide. However, we did none of these as we were short on time.

Kalo Dungar

Ludiya  (handicraft village) — The mud huts of Ludiya are the most fascinating feature of the village. Known as Bhungas , t he aesthetic appeal and the shape of these huts set them apart. Colourful motifs beautify the exterior of the Bhungas. The tribes living here migrated from Rajasthan long ago. The women specialize in embroidery and mirrorwork on fabrics. They still wear the traditional Kutchi attire and conduct business in a very deft fashion.

Ludiya could be done in 0.5 hours if you stick with light shopping. Personally, I found Ludiya very photogenic and emanating with local flavour of the place. The older women of Ludiya are very smart, professional and witty. The price of the tiny items like embroidery dolls start from INR 100.

Ludiya

White Rann near Dhordo — The 30 kilometres drive from Ludiya to White Rann is remarkably unique. There are no village, no habitation, no trees and no animals. The White Rann or the white salt flats, that we come across in photos is the climax for this two day itinerary. Like the Kalo Dungar, the White Rann is very windy. The unending expanse of white is blinding; using a sunglass is absolutely recommended. The car parking space has a tall tower where one can climb and enjoy the view of the salt expanse. One is free to walk, sit or run in the salt desert. Camel carts and ATVs ply on the desert and can be hired. The sunset is breathtaking. The moonless starry sky and the white expanse lit up by the full moon are both equally enjoyable. The salt flat is the perfect place to indulge in quirky trick photography.

Technically one should leave the desert at 7 PM, but there was no-one around to enforce this rule so we ended up staying there till 8 PM. Sunset happened at 6.50PM and moon rose at 9PM, so between 7.30PM-8PM it was absolutely dark, nothing was visible save the lights coming from the parking lot.

White Rann

Transportation and costs involved

Bhuj is a small town and autos can be hired to take you from one point to another. The locals of Kutch are very friendly, helpful and well behaved, including the auto drivers. They more or less charge a uniform rate and are very honest.

Prag Mahal and Aina Mahal are walking distances away from the hub of the town. We turned on Google Maps and walked through the narrow alleys to reach the palaces. It took us 15 minutes and in return we got ample opportunities to enjoy the Bhuj vibe.

From the premises of Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal, which are adjacent to each other, we hired an auto to take us to Ajrakhpur and Bhujodi and drop us back to Bhuj. He charged us INR 800 without limiting us to any fixed hours.

The auto which took us to Bhujio Dungar from a point in Bhuj city charged us INR 200 for a return trip. He dropped us off at Bhujio Dungar, gave us his phone number and asked us to call him up once we were done hiking.

For the exploration involved in the second day we hired an AC sedan with a driver. It cost us INR 2700 (Raju Bhai Jothva – +91 9586697101) for the full day, up to a maximum of 300 kilometres distance. We paid separately for our driver’s lunch.

The formula for pricing followed by most of the drivers in Kutch region for AC Sedan car is as follows: 300 Km per day x INR 9 per kilometres = INR 2700. Toll and parking charges are payable by guest. Driver allowance is INR 200 per night.

Motorcycle can be hired for INR 600 – INR 800 per day from Bhuj.

Government Permission to visit White Rann at Dhordo and beyond

Since the White Rann at Dhordo and the area beyond is very close to the international border with Pakistan, it is mandatory for every traveller to acquire permission at the checkpost in Bhirandiyara. This is granted on spot; the only requirement is showing a valid I.D proof. The price is INR 100 per person and INR 50 for a vehicle. This permission allows access up to Kalo Dungar. To go beyond Kalo Dungar, a separate permit is required. We are not sure if the permit is granted on single entry or on a per day basis.

Food in Gujarat – Our experience

The taste of food is remarkably different from the spicy food that the rest of India flaunts. Our trip was so tightly scheduled that we hardly got time to enjoy the delectable food. We sampled pav bhaji of Bhuj. The bun was coated in a sauce which had a rich taste of garlic to it. When we ordered puri bhaji , the size of the puris were like those of idlis .

We tasted the Gujarati Thali for dinner — rice, rotli , sweet tomato curry, tangy daal , potato curry with a strong garlic flavour and buttermilk. Buttermilk in this part of the world is better known as chaas . Chaas is widely consumed by the locals of Gujarat throughout the day. Rotlis are the common chapattis or rotis available all over India. The rice was definitely not plain rice. It had a strange taste which we had never associated with rice and was sprinkled with cereals like daal . All the curries had their own unique tastes; the recipes are definitely not the same as the rest of the country. We ordered and ate in our accommodation. The price for one Gujarati thali was INR 150.

We bought mewa , a special kind of sweet made by boiling milk, from Khavda, a village near Kalo Dungar. It was toothsome and sinfully sweet. It cost us INR 50 for 250 gm as far as we remember.

Accommodation in Kutch

The cheapest accommodation options are present in Bhuj. We stayed in Royal Guest House. It was situated in the heart of the city, yet in a very peaceful neighbourhood. We made our booking through Booking.com. Our room was not spacious but both the room and bathroom were spotlessly clean, air conditioned, properly lit and the staff was very well behaved. We also saw a well maintained air conditioned dormitory. Foreigners are regular customers of this establishment.

If you hire a private vehicle, it is possible to stay at the parking lot of the White Rann till moonrise and return back to Bhuj at night for your onward journey. The roads are very safe and locals are trustworthy. Keep in mind though – it is a journey of 87 kilometres.

As far as my research goes, independent camping on the White Rann itself is illegal. During Rann Utsav, tents are arranged near the White Rann and cultural programmes take place. In order to stay in the tents, visitors are supposed to dish out exorbitant amounts of money.

Hodka and Dhordo

The villagers open their homes and welcome guests in the villages of Dhordo and Hodka, which are nearest to the White Rann. Also, there are resorts and campsites in the two villages where visitors can board in. The lure of staying in the bhungas is what attracts visitors here. The minimum price tag which I came across was Resort Naveen (+91 9429380246) at Dhordo. He quoted INR 3500 for one night couple stay in a twin accommodation non AC bhunga inclusive of all meals.

I got this information in one Facebook group and I am sharing it here.  A person named Dhana (+91 7359770984 and +91 9428566757) offers homestays in Ludiya village for INR 400 per person per night. Meals are charged INR 100.

Kalo Dungar

As mentioned earlier, Kalo Dungar has a Dharamshala (+91 9426160007) in the temple complex where you can stay. I was quoted a price of INR 700 for air conditioned room on twin sharing and INR 500 for non air conditioned room on twin sharing. The concerned personnel, however, mentioned that more people in one room can be allowed and price for that is open for negotiation. There is proper parking space for vehicles.

Apart from this, there is Toran Resort which charges outrageously high rates.

White Rann

Correct time of the year to travel to Kutch

The salt flats of Kutch remains submerged in water in the monsoon months of June – September. Tourists start visiting from October and it lasts till March. The Rann Utsav is held from December-February every year and this happens to be peak season at the White Rann. In the months of October- December the salt flats still remain marshy. From March onwards the heat increases in the desert.

We went in early March when the tents at Rann Utsav were wrapping up business. It was hot no doubt, but we were rewarded with far less number of tourists.

Helpful pointers for a trip to Kutch – Learn from our experiences

  • There is a strong sense of fraternity etched in the communities of Kutch. The locals are welcoming, helpful, friendly and mostly honest. Treat them with respect and expect warmth in return. Be cautious if you intend to take photos as some of them may not enjoy being the subject of photography. Always take permission, don’t just barge in. Don’t pester if they refuse, move on.
  • We travelled on the Holi weekend of 2018, on 1 and 2 March 2018 to be precise. It was the fag end of the tourist season and the last weekend of Rann Utsav. Prices may differ if you choose to visit during peak time. Also, I was told the road to Kalo Dungar during the peak season is sometimes packed with cars.
  • From what I have heard, during December the salt flats of White Rann are still marshy. Walking over it may soak your shoes. When we travelled in early March there was no trace of any marsh. The salt had hardened completely.
  • There was a considerable gap of about 2.5-3 hours between sunset and moonrise in the White Rann on the day we visited. In those gap hours you can witness absolute darkness and a sky with twinkling stars.
  • Gujaratis do eat food which is not just khakra , fafda , dhokla and jalebi . Those are worth tasting as their flavour is unique.
  • A part of White Rann also lies on the Bhuj-Dholavira road. It is known as Ekal ka Rann named after the Ekal mata temple from where the salt flat starts. Government permission is not required to visit this part of White Rann and many people who have been there say it is better than the White Rann near Dhordo. Even in peak season this place remains crowdless.

Wish you all the best for your trip. Do let me know if I missed anything, or if you want me to add something! I am all ears to know how your trip to Kutch was!

kutch bhuj tour itinerary

My perfect day Basking in Bhuj

Photo of Nandan Dongre

Bhuj , or Kutch in general is synonymous to the White desert and birds. The Great Rann of Kutch is a magnificent wonder. The process of the rainwater submerging the dry-lands, slowly giving way to the white salt flatlands is as unique as intriguing. This unusual topography also means that the area surrounding the Rann spurns out a few gems, true to its character.

The beauty of this place is not in the destination, but in the journey. The people, the culture, the food and the geography;  all add up in making Kutch an unexplored jewel in India 's crown.

The best way to explore Kutch is to start from Bhuj, and drive your way exploring Kutch. This 1 day itinerary consists of some of these gems in and around Bhuj; with an attempt to open this rustic but serene land to the reader.

Starting from the desolate town of Fort Lakpat, we made our way towards the Great White Rann; with stopovers around Bhuj town to experience the palate and culture of Kutch. It truly is a place to discover yourself, and ending the day relaxing on the white salts, just taking in the view, is mesmerising and fulfilling.Kutch is a place which needs to be visited to be experienced, words will never do enough justice. So pack up your bags and head upto Kutch, as they say, Kutch nahi dekha toh kuch nahi dekha.

Note: The trip starts in Bhuj, and ends in an overnight stay at Dhordo .

This is the perfect amount if you want to maximize your chances to see i.e. tigers and get to drive in different areas of the park. I was also able upon asking to change from a canter to a jeep safari and do a stop at Mysore to see the palace on the way back to Bangalore (paid extra) which was no problem. We would not hesitate to book again any tour in India through Agora Voyages. • 210domenicam 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An unforgettable experience of India Agora Voyages offered us the exact kind of tour that I had required. Not only was the experience incredible since we travelled by car with our own driver, Mr Binabi Vinay Kumar, which allowed us to see this part of India so closely, but also gave us the opportunity to stop and have lunch at the small restaurants along the road and savor the habits of its people. Rajasthan is a beautiful region of the country. It has so many different landscapes to appreciate and in each city or town we visited we had our own local English speaking guides who were highly qualified not only on the cultural and historical aspects of the sites and monuments but each one gave us many insights to the cultural life that we otherwise wouldn't ever have known. The most beautiful experience, however, was The Taj Mahal in Agra. We saw it at sunrise when the first rays hit this amazing masterpiece of human craftsmanship. The tour lasted for 24 days starting in Delhi then in Rajasthan finishing in Agra. My husband and I would highly recommend Agora Voyages not only for its careful attention to details but also to its constant interest in the welfare and conforts of his clients. Booked an 11 day tour (Hubbali, Hampi, Badami, Aihole, SolaPur aurangabad) I contacted Sashi at Agora and he basically took care of everything. I presented him with my dates and a rough plan of what I wanted to do, Sashi then put together an itinerary. The cost was really reasonable for 2 people. And during the booking stage I had to make several changes due to some changes in dates, Sashi accommodated and amended everything accordingly with no issues. Payment was done via a bank transfer which was simple. On the first day, our driver Raju bhai came to pick us up and was with us throughout the trip. He was absolutely exceptional. A calm, reliable and completely trust worthy driver who went above an beyond many times. There was always water in the car and he was incredibly knowledgeable, making some of the long drives really interesting. All the guides we had were really knowledgeable, explained everything really well. More so they were local guides who spoke good English and had a lot of insight into a lot of the archaeological sites we visited. All the hotels we stayed in were beautiful, clean and safe. Overall I would recommend Agora to anyone. The service was exceptional and as a result we had the most amazing trip. Often India is described as an unsafe place to travel m, particularly for two women, but we felt incredibly safe. Will definitely use Agora again in the future. Read more Written February 7, 2024

We extended it to 12 days by adding a few days off to allow us to acclimate and process our experiences. This worked out well, although we got tired on our last few days. They organized everything for us and that really, really well! We were picked up and brought to all important sights. They had good recommendations for clean restaurants and interesting stories on history as well as religion. We booked our hotels separately. We had a bad experience at our hotel in Bodhgaya. Our guide Chandan, which was sent from Agora Voyages, helped as getting the hotel refunded and getting us to the new hotel. We are grateful for that. Also our contact at Agora Voyages, Shashi was always ready to answer questions via WhatsApp. Our drivers were really good. That Goan Girl

A COMPLETE TRAVEL GUIDE TO BHUJ, THE GATEWAY TO THE RANN OF KUTCH

Bhuj, the erstwhile capital of the princely state of Kutch was known for its wealth that came from sea-trade, and for the bartering of African slaves for Indian textiles. Today, the town doesn’t allure travellers as much as the Rann of Kutch does. The Rann (translating to Salt Marsh) has been hogging the spotlight, and Bhuj, its nearest town, is merely seen as a stopover on the way to the Rann Utsav, a Gujarat Tourism initiative that takes place between November and February, when the wetland dries up, leaving a vast expanse of white salt flats behind.

HOW TO TRAVEL TO BHUJ

If you’re adventurous, you can seriously consider a road trip from Mumbai to Bhuj , or from anywhere in India to Bhuj for that matter. The roads in Gujarat are excellent and make for a very enjoyable drive. You could also hop on a flight as the nearest airport to Bhuj is 4 kms away. Alternatively, you can get on a bus to any city in Gujarat and then change buses to get to Bhuj – there is no shortage of them. Lastly, if you choose to travel by train, it is most convenient to get a train to Bhuj from Mumbai and the journey lasts around 15 hours – just a little less than that of a road trip.

best travel blogger india

I should mention though, that getting around once you’re *in* Bhuj is no piece of cake. The public transport facilities are not developed, there are little-to-no self-drive vehicles and you would need to rely on your hotel receptionist to book you a cab everywhere. This is why doing a road trip and having your vehicle with you makes the most sense – as many of the places worth seeing in Bhuj are off the beaten track.

EXPLORE BHUJ AND ITS SURROUNDING HANDICRAFT VILLAGES

Bhuj is an enchanting town and is an extremely affordable backpacker destination in India. Magnificent palaces, noisy marketplaces, beautiful architectural treasures and world-class textiles and handicrafts make it a fascinating place to spend a couple of days. While most of Bhuj had been destroyed in the massive earthquake of 2001, much of it has been rebuilt – the scars still visible; though much has been lost, too.

Like the rest of Gujarat, Bhuj is a vegetarian town. It is a comfortable place to park your bags and it offers plush accommodation on a budget as you explore the colourful villages surrounding it. I stayed at Hotel Kutch Desert , which was the first place we walked in to at 11:30 PM, that luckily turned out to be pretty good. If you’re a digital nomad, you’ll find there to be excellent connectivity to work in Bhuj, but no cafes or restaurants where you can spend the day working out of – that culture is alien here.

6 INTERESTING THINGS TO DO IN BHUJ

GET A FEEL OF THE LOCAL MARKET – Watching people go about their day in a new place is something I can do for hours! We walked around the main market one morning and stopped for breakfast at Gayatri Fast Food, a no-frills place with upstairs open-air seating from where we could watch the market scenes unfold below.

VISIT AINA MAHAL AND PRAG MAHAL – The two ancient palaces in one compound are the jewels of Bhuj and rightfully so! The Prag Mahal looks like it was shipped here in its entirety from Europe – with its Neo-Gothic architecture, 150-foot tall clock tower, elaborate pillars and gold-gilded carvings depicting everything from tiny squirrels to life-size men holding up the ceiling. I can bet that at every turn, you will stop, open-mouthed to stare at the opulence of this magnificent palace, built by Rao Pragmaji way back in 1838! I can only imagine how much more lavish it must have seemed back then in the 19 th century when Col Henry Wilkins was paid a whopping 31 lakhs to design at that time. Entry to Prag Mahal costs Rs. 20 per person with mobile photography allowed. Bringing professional photography equipment is chargeable.

prag mahal

Aina Mahal, the older of the two palaces, looks even more forlorn but doesn’t lack in wealth. Built by Maharaja Rao Lakhpatji, it is more like a museum than a palace. The doors have carvings made with ivory and mirrors of every shape and size stretch from wall to wall, in gold frames. You’ll see arms and ammunition, paintings, coins, hookah equipment and more as you walk from room to room. Entry to the Aina Mahal is Rs. 20 per person and the charge for phone photography is Rs. 50. The staff is extremely alert and follows you around to ensure you don’t click a single photograph without buying a photography pass – and if you do, they will impose a fine you of Rs. 500.

bhuj rann of kutch

Both these palaces in Bhuj have, what seems like a shadow of gloom cast over them, perhaps due to being at the mercy of man and nature… and due to the descent from the height of power to being a mere tourist attraction today. The palaces can be visited at leisure in one morning itself.

RAMKUND STEPWELL – Not really worth stopping to see, but I did so just to compare it with the step-wells in Hampi and Jodhpur . The Ramkund Stepwell in Bhuj is not very well maintained and you could pop in and out in less than 15 minutes. It seems to be more of a hangout spot among local youth and a place for pre-wedding photo shoots (there was one going on when I was there!) than a tourist attraction in Bhuj.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Jade (@thatgoangirl) on Feb 19, 2020 at 4:58am PST

SWAMINARAYAN TEMPLE – I wasn’t really expecting to enjoy this temple as much as I did, but you can’t deny the tranquillity and grandeur of the place. Visit this stunning white marble temple a little before sunset and watch as it changes colours from blush pink to flaming orange as the sun sets, while you enjoy the strong breeze. Whether or not you like visiting religious places in India, I’d suggest visiting this one because of its beauty and good vibrations!

bhuj itinerary things to do

VISIT THE FAMOUS HANDICRAFT VILLAGES OF BHUJ – If you go to Bhuj and don’t explore a few of the handicraft villages, you’re missing out! I’m no shopper myself, but I simply couldn’t resist buying a couple of leather bags, some key chains, gorgeous shawls and more – made by local artisans and sold at unbeatable prices. Kutch is known around the world for its handicrafts, and watching the craftsmen at work in Bhujodi Village is both enlightening and fascinating.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Jade (@thatgoangirl) on Feb 4, 2020 at 5:39am PST

Bhujodi village handicrafts

Bhujodi has smaller versions of the Red Fort (called ‘Yellow Fort’ here), the Parliament and a statue of Gandhi – all of which are found in Delhi. One section of the massive arena features around 30 little huts that the government gives to 30 different craftsmen every month and it truly is a shoppers’ paradise as you hop from hut to hut chatting with craftsmen, browsing through their wares and being oh-so-tempted! I’d also highly recommend the Khamir Craft Resource Centre for the ingenious, beautiful products they make and sell from scarves to shoes and from books to bags and purses made of recycled plastic! They also have handicraft workshops that you need to book in advance for. Lastly, I had read about the village of Nirona and drove all the way there but it seemed pretty much deserted.

handicraft villages bhuj

DON’T MISS OUT ON THE FOOD – There’s very little said about the food in Bhuj, but I totally enjoyed whatever I tried. The Puri Shak at Gayatri Puri Centre is delicious, try the Dabeli at Kishan Dabeli stall and the Gujarati Thali at Umayiji Dining Hall. Since there’s no information about the best food in Bhuj, these are just places I happened to eat at and really enjoyed – I’m sure there are better options available.

Hi there, lovely post! I had visited Bhuj during the Kutchh festival a year back. I have to say that was by far the best experience I had in terms of culture, festivity and handicrafts. I could not cover as many placed as you did but it still remains one of my favorite trips ever.

Hi Stephanie, Thanks for reading! I didn’t enjoy the actual Rann Utsav as much as I enjoyed exploring the city of Bhuj, the surrounding villages and of course, marvelling at the handicrafts. I found the Rann Utsav itself to be quite overrated, but that may be because I visited towards the end of the festival. When did you visit?

Day trip to White desert (Rann of Kutch), Complete travel itinerary

A horizontal line dividing white and blue at horizon, a white sheet spread across miles. Reflection of the sun light were sparkling in my eyes. Neither I was in Iceland nor there was any snow I am talking about.

But this amazing scene was generating a feeling of being on the Moon or another Planet. I was in the mid of World’s largest Salt desert near Bhuj (Gujarat), which is also famous as White Rann or White Desert of Kutch.

We are living amidst of nature but there always some shades of nature that still to see. Man have created lots of wonder but still nature is always on the top.

Day trip from Bhuj to White Desert of Kutch; Complete itinerary

I booked a cab for a day trip from Bhuj to White desert, including 2 another important point of attraction of that region; Kalo Dungar & India Bridge.

We started our journey from Bhuj at 09:00 AM, planned it early because I wanted to extract maximum out of my trip.

On proceeding 28 Km, we crossed ‘Tropic of Cancer’ line which pass through this highway. Usually people like to stop at this point to capture this important geographical landmark in snap.

Bhuj to rann of Kutch road trip

As we were moving close to desert area, the vegetation, human habitat all were going disappear. The only thing was still continuous, the super smooth road.

Our driver cum guide told us that this region get minimum rain and the soil of the region does not absorb water, even if it rain. Here, mother Earth is not capable of providing grains to feed their children. It was a bitter truth of that dead land.

India Bridge in Kutch

Till now, we had reached to the India Bridge entry point. A BSF guard inquired us few general question and let us cross the bridge to get on the other side. This bridge build over the ‘ Runn of Kutch lake ‘ where the lake get narrowest down.

It is the only way to go to the India-Pak boarder, from here Pakistan boarder was around 80 Km. No tourist is allowed beyond this point because of boarder safety issue. ( Photography also prohibited in this area )

Photo of India Bridge, Kutchh

I found one tourist arguing that she want to see boarder and they should let her go because she had traveled from very far. We should avoid such circumstances because these wonderful people work day-n-night in such a harsh condition for the safety of country.

Even these army people welcome you, have little chit-chat with you and also offer drinking water, which is very precious in the desert. After relaxing there for 15-20 minute, it was time to move on to Kalo Dungar.

Kalo Dungar

Bhuj to Kalo dungar

It sounds like a favorite place among the villains of Hindi movies :). Also famous as Black hill, was around 30 Km from India bridge . But as usual road condition was very good so we reached within 40 minute.

Kalo Dungar is famous for having panoramic view of the Kutch lake and White desert . And there was popular Magnetic hill on the way ( popular theory is that Car itself move even if engine is not running. You may heard similar theory about road near Leh, J&K ).

Whatever remote area it may be, there is always a temple to address your religious quench, this is the beauty of India.

Dattatreya Temple at Kalo Dungar

Dattatreya temple at kalo dungar hill

So, here is the temple of Dattatreya on hill top, a God which is mostly depicted with three head. According to mythology Dattatreya was a joint incarnation of three main Lord in Hinduism; Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva , who born as a son of Atri and Anusuya (sage family).

There is a Prasad canteen associated to the temple trust. So, if you reach there around 12 noon, you can have free lunch in the form of Prasad (Satvik food).

This Prasad is distributed among the visitors after offering to the Bhagwan Dattatreya , who come in the form of jackal and accept the offering.

Jackals at the Kalo dungar temple

Yes, it is the interesting fact and another main attraction of Kalo Dungar. Daily, in the noon a bell being rang and a group of 3 to 4 jackals come and eat the Prasad. And people, who witness this scene consider themselves lucky.

We too witnessed that scene and later have prasad ( Note: For taking prasad you have to be in queue, have to sit on the floor and wash your utensil after finish )

View point at Kalo Dungar hill

Later, we went to view point and the sight we got was really amazing, being on the hill-top could see the vast white field spread up to several hundreds miles, which was partially merged in the lake.

It was a tricolor in front of me like our Indian flag, Green at the bottom (vegetation on the hill), white in the middle ( the white desert) and blue on the top (sky).

white desert view from Kalo dungar hill

It was the time to sit for a while and feel the natural beauty. Apart from this you can have camel ride and can also purchase something from handicraft shops located here.

The beautiful view, which was soothing and mesmerizing was in front of me but the main attraction, Great White Desert was still to see.

Camel ride at Kalo dungar hill

So, we moved to White Desert, which was almost 50 Km from the Kalo Dungar hill. The single lane passing through the barren land was also as smooth as highway. There was hardly any traffic, so we reached in less than an hour.

It was around 02:30 PM. Throughout the year, this area get hot sunny day so, it was not a good idea to go straight to the the desert. We decided to explore Run-Utsav before going to desert.

Rann of Kutch Festival

Rann of Kutch festival

Every year Gujarat tourism organize ‘Rann Utsav’ for about 4 months (Nov-Feb) . It is a kind of fair which have lots of shops related to Gujarati foods and local made handicraft items like embroidered clothes, wooden toys, silver jewelry etc.

Apart from these it display exhibition about some notable attraction from Gujarat, also organize folk music to promote tourism in Gujarat. This time it had also displayed a miniature of ‘Statue of Unity’ recently inaugurated by PM.

Colours from Runn-Utsav 2018-19

Till now, the Sun was not remain that harsh. So we moved to desert area. ( For going in the white desert area it is mandatory to get a permit to enter in the desert area. Take that in advance, otherwise have to face long queue in the evening time. )

From the fair ground, parking area for white desert was about 3 Km. You will see several horse-cart and camel-cart standing there to take you till the watch tower standing in the mid of desert which is another 1.5 Km. Though, I

chose to walk so I could have enough time to capture all the moments.

Great white desert of Kutch

white desert festival

At the initial, this pathway had brown soil/mud field on both side. But as I was moving forward, color of the surrounding slowly changing to white.

And now, I was in the mid of hundreds of Kilometer big white desert, I could only see the white below my feet. It was salt which is spreads across the desert or it is a salt desert.

Salt in the white desert

Initially it was awkward to walk on the salt because what I have seen on the plate, today was under feet. Mud from my shoes was spoiling the white-shine of the salt. But at the same time, the view was amazingly unique.

Hundreds of Km flat land covered with salt, only white & white around me. There was a 15 meter high watch tower for providing better view of surroundings.

watch tower at white desert kutch

From that tower, I could see more of this amazing scene; Kids were playing on white ground, people were catching moment in there cellphone or camera while some of the tourist was having camel ride and trying to be away from the crowd.

If I nullify the effect of gravity, the scene might be similar if I go to the Moon. Believe me the beauty of that amazing landscape is beyond words, it deserved to be a part of every traveler’s bucket-list.

pics of white desert in Kutch

In the monsoon, this area get submerged with the Sea water. As the weather change the water get recede and this salt desert left behind. The area get access only after the monsoon over. Still, there was enough moisture on that salt bed to wet our clothes.

Sun-set always another attraction of such kind of spot but it was hazy evening, so could not catch that moment. But I was not disappointed because what i got was itself more valuable and enough to fulfill my expectation.

How to reach White Desert of Kutch

Bhuj is the headquarter of Kutch and the central point for exploring The Great White desert. Whatever part of Gujarat you plan to visit, and no matter from which part of India you are coming, Ahmadabad is the junction point. There are few trains including 2 daily-trains run from Ahmadabad to Bhuj .

Apart from GSRTC, there are many private operators provide daily bus service (seater and sleeper) from Ahmadabad to Bhuj.

The White desert is almost 90 Km from the Bhuj and there are very less means of public transport. If you have limited time and still want to explore maximum of the region, it is better to book a cab for a day trip from Bhuj to white desert.

The perfect 4-day itinerary for exploring Kutch in a campervan

By Shikha Shah

The perfect 4day itinerary for exploring Kutch in a campervan

If there is a place I have found myself inexorably drawn back to, again and again, it's Kutch in Gujarat. Over the years, I have forged an unexplainable bond with the ancient land and its warm people. So, when a close Kutchi friend propounded the idea of traversing its off-beat locales in a campervan, I jumped at the adventure without a second thought. I rang up a few other friends and they agreed to join. After arriving at Gandhidham railway station by train, we boarded our caravan  Wonder Wheels , which is a chic camping trailer pulled by a jeep. We dumped our bags in the storage space at the back of the trailer, made ourselves comfortable and set out to explore India's wild west in our "home on wheels".

kutch campervan

Wonder Wheels campervan

Located on the westernmost tip of India, Kutch is a seasonal island with a peculiar ecosystem characterised by stark, arid landscapes and extreme weather conditions. Barely rising above sea level, its "rann" is a shimmering, spectacular white salt marsh in the dry season and remains submerged under sea and rainwater during the monsoons. While the annual festival of Rann Utsav attracts a large number of tourists every year, it is only in the hinterland of Kutch that you encounter authentic experiences and organic connections.

Go beyond touristy Dhordo, Mandvi Beach and Kala Dungar to uncover little hamlets inhabited by nomadic and pastoral communities and a jumble of tribal groups, many of which are striving hard to keep their rich traditions, unique art forms and embroidery alive through the generations. While the walled city of Bhuj is home to palaces and state-of-the-art museums where you can spend hours browsing through the history and indigenous crafts and cultures of Kutch, longer drives to remote corners lead you to astonishing archaeological and geological wonders.

Whether you're a seasoned campervan traveller or are hitting the road for the first time, here's a four-day itinerary that will bring you the real slice of the tortoise-shaped land, encompassing its warm hospitality, deep-rooted cultural heritage, a motley mix of landscapes, a kaleidoscope of art forms, and simple, satisfying local cuisine.

Route:   Gandhidham Junction - Jarpara (65 km)- Mandvi (34 km) - Jarpara (34 km) - Hodka (122 km)- Gandhi Nu Gaam (29 km) - Dholavira (60 km) – Khavda (58) – Bhirandiyara (20 km) - Bhuj (53 km)- Jadura Tekri (13 km) - Kaliya Dhrow (46 km) – Bhuj (33 km)

(You could also begin your journey from Bhuj and follow the same route)

Time: 4 days

Route: Gandhidham Junction - Jarpara (65 km)- Mandvi (34 km) - Jarpara (34 km); Driving time: 3 ½ hours

There's no better tone-setter for the trip than camping in the wild.

Arrive at  Gandhidham Railway Station  early in the morning and begin your journey towards  Jarpara , a small village in Mundra Taluka. On the way, make a pitstop near  Moti   Bhujpur  bus stop for a local breakfast of chah (full milk tea) and Kutchi Dabeli (pav stuffed with a spiced potato mixture and topped with date and garlic chutneys, chopped onions, sev and masala peanuts) at  Gurukrupa Dabeliwala .

Home to around 20,000 people and as old as 800 years, Jarpara is dominated by the Gadhvi community (also known as Charans) which is said to have migrated to Kutch from Sindh as well as various parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. While the Gadhvis were traditionally genealogists who often occupied a place in the royal courts, many are small and medium-sized farmers today. The narrow, dirt road leading to Chikoowadi - Nature's Heritage , which is Shyam Gadhvi's farm and your campsite for the day, is flanked by plantations of castor, dates, cotton, coconut and moringa as well as chikoo and Kesar mango trees. Keep your eyes peeled for rare species of birds.

Night camping

The raw nature and countryside charm of the 21-acre chikoowadi are soul soothing. Park your campervan and set up a tent in the farm, freshen up and get ready for an action-packed day ahead.

A short two-kilometre drive from the campsite is the neighbouring town of  Bhujpur where you can meet Anwar Khatri, a fifth-generation batik artist who specialises in rare techniques like reverse batik and a combination of batik and bandhani. What makes Kutchi batik unique is that it makes use of hand-carved wooden blocks made from teak wood. Many blocks feature traditional patterns and designs of historical significance. In the Kutchi dialect, the word “Baa’t” symbolises the characteristic crackle effect which is the very essence of batik. At Anwar's workshop cum studio named "Baat: The Soul of Batik", learn all about his family legacy of the traditional Indian batik process. Bring home one of his batik cotton fabrics or gorgeous bandhani silk sarees as a souvenir.

Head back to the campsite for a hearty lunch at Shyam Gadhvi's humble abode sitting on the same property. His traditional home with a buffalo shed, a hand pump, charpoys laid under shaded trees, and a spacious verandah reminds you of the pleasures of a simple life. Watch Gadhvi's mother Aashbhai effortlessly hand-rolling bajra (pearl millet) rotlas and cooking them over a natural fire. Perhaps, try your hand at rolling a rotla. A traditional Kutchi meal comprises bajra rotlas usually enjoyed with dollops of desi makhan or ghee, vengan-tameta nu shaak (brinjal and tomato sabzi), khichdi, a glass of buttermilk and some jaggery for a sweet finish. You feel light and healthy even after you have gluttonously ingested copious amounts of food. That's the beauty of a homecooked Kutchi meal!

Kutch campervan

Aashbai rolling rotlas at Chikoowadi, Jarpara

Post lunch, head to  Mandvi , a seaside town located right on the Gulf of Kutch and less than an hour from Jarpara. Formerly a bustling seaport, Mandvi is known for its 400-year-old cottage shipbuilding industry. When here, watch the expert craftsmen using sal wood to carve out large wooden ships and fishing boats on the bank of the Rukmavati River. Pop into renowned boat model maker Shivji Bhuda Fofindi's Sagar Ship Model. His workshop is home to hundreds of finished and unfinished ship models created in various sizes—from miniatures to 15-foot-long ones. While none of them can make it to sea, many inspire the designs of gigantic seaworthy vessels and Indian Navy warships.

If you have some time at hand, saunter the narrow lanes of Mandvi's old town and marvel at the architectural details of traditional Gujarati homes. European-style balconies, baroque motifs, and stained-glass windows are a testament to the ideas and influences brought by the locals from their travels around the globe.

The new Dholavira Highway

Another striking landmark of Mandvi and a must-visit is the  Vijay Vilas Palace , built as a summer resort in the 1920s by the then Maharao of Kutch. It's the famous palace you have seen in Bollywood films  Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and  Lagaan . Set amid well-laid gardens with marble fountains, the red sandstone structure blends Rajput architecture with colonial elements. Observe the Bengal domes on the sides, stone-carved jalis, jharokhas, chhatris, chhajas and murals. The ground floor and its upper terraces with a view are open the visitors.

Next to the palace is a beach which is well worth a visit. Take in Mandvi's slower, calmer pace by watching the sun go down on the soft sand beach.

Drive back to  Chikoowadi  for dinner and a musical evening with the Gadhvi family. Gadhvis are also known for their love for languages, literature and poetry. In fact, they are often referred to as "Kaviraj", which literally means "king among poets". If you display your inclination to Kutchi folklore and music, Shyam Gadhvi and his talented family members are happy to host a session of music, storytelling and dancing around a bonfire. There could be no better way to wrap up your first night in Kutch.

Route: Jarpara - Hodka (122 km)- Gandhi Nu Gaam (29 km ) - Dholavira (60 km) Driving time: 4 hours

Rise early for a morning walk around the 21-acre farm and a closer look at the local flora and fauna. Alternatively, wake up at ease, indulge in a light breakfast with the Gadhvis and depart for  Hodka , a Meghwal village situated near the Indo-Pak border.

With little boys running around a cluster of bhungas (circular mud huts with conical thatch roofs) and pretty girls dressed in hand-embroidered kanjiris (long choli blouses) and colourful chaniyas (skirts) drawing water from the wells, Hodka boasts rusticity that makes it look like it's straight out of a movie scene.

kutch campervan

A woman making embroidered artefacts in Hodka

Visit skilled leather artisan Umrabhai Kana who owns a dairy farm and specialises in leather craft, passed down from generation to generation. Umrabhai makes a variety of mugs, jackets, harnesses, hats, footwear etc from leather which is coloured and decorated with intricate patterns. Don't miss interacting with his wife Bayabai who has travelled as far as France to exhibit her embroidery work.

You can choose to eat local, homemade lunch with Ranabhai Phota's welcoming family in Hodka. The men in the Phota family graze their cattle while the women spend their time making embroidered mirrors, bags, hair clips and more. They also deal in gorgeous Ajrakh bedspreads, shawls, dupattas and quilts.

Alternatively, pick up something on the way and proceed to  Gandhi Nu Gaam at Ludiya which is one of the 16 villages that were rebuilt from scratch after the 2001 earthquake. Built from locally-sourced materials, the village houses three schools, community buildings, religious shrines, a water harvesting system and 455 traditional bhungas, each hand-painted in vibrant colours and richly embellished with lippan (mirror) artwork. A visit here not only gives you a chance to understand the sustainability model of the village but also to interact with the local artisans who are masters in their craft. Gandhi Nu Gaam is a great place to pick up some beautiful thread work accessories like earrings, bangles, finger rings and more.

Gandhi Nu Gaam

Continue your onward journey to  Dholavira via the new Dholavira Highway, also known as "The Road to Heaven". With the sparkling Rann of Kutch lake on both sides of the road, what you see are scenic vistas of the glistening waters of the lake or white crystal beds and deep blue skies. The landscape varies depending on the time of year. The winter months of October to March are likely to treat you to the latter as this is when the water has evaporated, leaving behind an endless stretch of parched, blindingly white saline dessert. Since the road isn't completely paved yet, expect some dust and bumpy stretches.  Also, you might not find any shops or cafes on the highway. So make sure to stock up on some snacks to munch on during the drive.

Since you arrive in Dholavira late evening, you must drive past the excavation site to reach  Dholavira Homestay in the nearby Amarpar Village where the campervan can be stationed for the night. The homestay offers camping tents as well as traditional bhungas and delicious local meals. Opt for one of their accommodation options for added comfort or spend the night in your motorhome.

Route: Dholavira – Khavda (58) – Bhirandiyara (20 km) - Bhuj (53 km)- Jadura Tekri (13 km) Driving time: 4 hours

Start as early as 5.30 am and head for a short, easy trek to  Chipar Point - a viewpoint located in Khadir Bet, a small isolated island near Amrapar village. Around five km one way from the homestay, the trail takes you through arid hillocks peppered with dried grass and shrubs. At the top of the hill, you will see several flat, platform-like rocks jutting out with their uneven edges. These overhanging rocks are hot spots for photographers. From the top, you can see the ground merging into the vast white desert, often dotted with a herd of wild asses. Stay until the sun rises fully, illuminating the landscape.

kutch campervan

After a filling breakfast at your homestay, depart for the  World Heritage Site of Dholavira . The Indus people, one of the world’s first largest civilisations, prospered here from 2900 BC to 1500 BC. Discovered in 1968 by archaeologist Jagat Pati Joshi, this remote archaeological site takes you back 4,500 years and lets you visualise life during the Harappa period. The excavations have revealed a complex town of stone buildings half sunk in the soil. The well-preserved town comprises a fortified city with its citadel, a series of houses, a dedicated space for art and craft, a ceremonial ground, a cemetery and an efficient water management system which demonstrates the ingenuity of the people living here. Book a guided tour for a deeper understanding of the seven stages of civilisation, from development to maturity to decay. Visit the museum located on the same site and have a look at jewellery and artefacts made from clay, copper, shells, semi-precious stones, gold, ivory and other materials as well as a signboard in the Indus Valley script found during archaeological excavations.

After spending quality time at Dholavira, consider a quick lunch of Gujarati thali at  Rann Resort Dholavira which is only a three-kilometre drive from the site. Post lunch, commence your journey towards Bhuj, via the same Dholavira Highway.

Your first stop could be the village of  Khavda  where you can learn about painted pottery, one of the oldest existing art forms. Meet Kumbhar (potter) Abdul Ibrahim whose forefathers migrated to Kutch from Sindh a few hundred years ago. The family has been making earthen pots, such as matka for water storage, plates, bowls, kulhads, lamps etc. with the same designs as those found on the pottery from the Indus Valley excavations. Made from “rann ki mitti”, procured from a lake area near Khavda, all earthenware is coated with a thin wash of geru (red colour) and baked in a furnace using wood and cow dung. While men shape clay into pots on a potter’s wheel, kumbhar women look into surface ornamentation. They use natural paints in colours like black, red and white to decorate each piece of pottery with distinct, nature-inspired designs.

Khavda Pottery

Your next stop could be  Bhirandiyara , a  maldhari (cattle herders) village which is known for churning out the best maava (a dessert similar to milk cake) in Kutch, courtesy of its Banni buffaloes that provide full-fat milk. If you visit the village in the morning, you can witness the lengthy process of mava making which involves boiling and reducing the milk to almost 20% of its volume. The liquids evaporate leaving behind soft granules of milk solids which are called mawa. Replenish your energy by sampling a bowl of warm meetho mavo at one of the many mawa shops at Bhirandiyara.

It will be dinner time by the time you arrive in  Bhuj . If you're in the mood for some Kutchi fare, head to  Harbhole lodge near Bhid Gate . Alternatively, binge on street food at Hospital Road.

Prepare yourself for another night of camping outdoors atop  Jadura Tekri  (Jadura Hill), which offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills sprinkled with patches of green. The tekri is a short 30-minute drive from Bhuj.

Route: Jadura Tekri - Kaliya Dhrow (46 km) – Bhuj (33 km)

Driving time: 3 ½ hours (includes off roading) Start early for a drive to  Mamai Dev Kaliya Dhrow , a geological wonder located on the banks of Nirona river in the Vatachhad village. The drive of an hour and a half from Jadura Tekri brings you to Vatachhd from where you board one of the local jeeps for an off-road drive of around four to five kilometres.

Colloquially known as the Grand Canyon of Gujarat, Kaliya Dhrow is a natural landscape where history and nature collide beautifully. Referred to by the local herders as 'Kotaro', its series of narrow gorges are formed through ages of exposure to wind and water. Rocks, in shades of rust, crimson, purple, and sienna, indicate different levels of carbon, chemical weathering and mineral deposits. This gem remained hidden until it appeared on the "52 Places to Love in 2021" list created by an American daily newspaper after reviewing 2,000 entries from around the world. End the visit at the chai shop sitting at the topmost point of Kaliya Dhrow.

Drive back to Bhuj and grab something you can eat on the way to the newly-built  Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Museum situated atop the Bhujiyo Dungar on the outskirts of the city. If you are someone who loves museums, Smritivan (Forest of Memories) could easily consume three to four hours of your time. Its seven interactive and immersive galleries—Rebirth, Rediscover, Restore, Rebuild, Rethink, Relive, and Renew—are a journey from the earth's evolution and the historic past of Kutch to the impact of the earthquake on the region and first-person stories of revival from survivors and artisans. In one of its rooms, you can write a message on a paper leaf and hang it on the tree while the other lets you pay your respects to the deceased by lighting a virtual flame. The engrossing 470-acre space holds within itself the world's largest Miyawaki forest with over three lakh plants and 50 check-dam reservoirs with nameplates of the 13,000 earthquake victims. The museum is closed on Mondays.

For a memorable conclusion to your four days of mindful travelling around Kutch, consider a 30-minute hike to reach the memorial’s Sun Point which is its highest point overlooking the city of Bhuj. Spend some moments in silence as you watch the sun go down and absorb all you have experienced in this land of magic and mystery.

Bhuj has something for everyone. Your alternative plan could include places like Aina Mahal, Prag Mahal, Kutch Museum, and Hamirsar Lake. Regional Science Centre, LLDC (Living and Learning Design Centre) and Vande Mataram Memorial in Hiralaxmi Craft Park in Bhuj are other notable museums you can add to your itinerary.

I had been looking forward to a visit to the Rann of Kutch on a full moon night. Finally, we made a weekend plan for Rann of Kutch, Bhuj & Mandvi.

bhuj gujarat

While Bhuj Kutch is usually a pitstop for most of the travelers who wish to visit the Rann of Kutch, Bhuj is a destination by itself. It is worth taking out some time for exploring this beautiful city.

Bhuj Gujarat boasts of the hall of mirrors in the Aina Mahal, the bell tower of Prag Mahal, the sculptures in Ramkund stepwell, and the beautiful Hamirsar lake- all are lovely places to visit in Bhuj.

In fact, Gujarat state, Kutch in particular, is a region full of culture and art. Its cities are a blend of history, vibrance and colours resulting in many places to visit in Bhuj.

My trip from Mumbai to Kutch

We took the night train from Mumbai to Kutch, there are 2-3 trains with different timings. We booked the Kutch Express leaving Mumbai at 5.45pm reaching Bhuj at 8.50am, so we could use the entire day. The train journey was comfortable & we got down at various stations on the way to taste the local food as well.

Many people use the Ahmedabad route, going to Ahmedabad & then coming to Kutch, which is good if you haven’t been to Ahmedabad before.

We returned via Bhuj Express leaving Bhuj Kutch at 10.45pm & reaching Dadar at 1.45pm.

Bhuj also has an airport & has flights from Mumbai.

Arrangements for Rann tent city from Bhuj Station

For those who have booked the Rann Utsav tent city package, pickup is right from the station. There was  a huge tent put up by the Rann Utsav organisers right outside. It had a reception counter, arrangements for tea & washroom, porters & seating arrangement as the departures for Rann Utsav are at  fixed intervals.

So the ones who’re coming for the first time & are wondering whether the pickup etc. is convenient, yes it is. And it’s right outside the station where you can’t miss it.

Things to do in Bhuj & Places to visit in Bhuj

Built in the traditional Kutchi style, the palaces of Bhuj are magnificent. And make some of the most beautiful places to visit in Bhuj. Aina Mahal, literally meaning  Palace of Mirrors was built in the 18th century & is located in the old city. The  designer of the palace had lived in Europe for many years & it shows in this palace.

bhuj india

The palace floors are full of blue delftware tiles and the marble walls are embedded with mirrors. There are  hanging chandeliers with shade of Venetian glass. The Hall of Mirrors within this palace is absolutely worth watching- it’s one of the most magical things to do in Bhuj.

Tho, it was damaged in the 2001 Gujarat earthquake and part of the building was restored. The ruins are still visible next to the palace.

aina mahal things to do in Bhuj

Next to  the Aina Mahal, is the Prag Mahal , which was built towards the end of the 19th century. Prag Mahal, named after Rao Pragmalji II, is in Italian Gothic style. It has a clock towering at 45 feet, from where you can see the entire Bhuj city! Mark it high on the list of places to visit in Bhuj.

Parag mahal

The 2001 Gujarat earthquake severely damaged this palace in Bhuj Gujarat. In 2006, the palace was burgled too.

The palace and the tower have now been repaired, after Amitabh Bachchan himself took interest in its restoration.

Both the palaces miss a decent washroom, so come prepared. 🙂

Kutch-Place of Memories

Kutch is a district of Gujarat state in western India. Covering an area of 45,674 km?, it is the largest district of India.Kutch literally means something which intermittently becomes wet and dry; a large part of this district is known as Rann of Kutch which is shallow wetland which submerges in water during the rainy season and becomes dry during other seasons. The same word is also used in Sanskrit origin for a tortoise

Kutch is probably one of the most beautiful, yet surreal places in India. With the vast expanses of white salt desert in the Great Rann of Kutch area, this is an amazing experience to witness. One would be able to see just stretches of pure white land as far as the eyesight goes
