The Best Day Trips from La Paz, Bolivia

La Paz

La Paz has become increasingly popular over recent years, not just for its stunning topography and fascinating indigenous culture, but also for the numerous awesome day trips just a stone’s throw away. From high altitude hikes through glacial mountains to death defying bike rides through steamy tropical valleys, learn about the very best short excursions this bustling metropolis has to offer.

1. the death road.

An extreme attraction that has become extremely popular. Throttle a mountain bike down a treacherously narrow road that has been given the unenviable moniker of being the most dangerous in the world. With sheer drop offs of several hundred feet, random assortments of jagged rocks and the occasional oncoming bus to contend with, this bike ride is guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping. Be careful though, as it’s called the Death Road for a reason. The trip must be done with a tour company and Gravity are the best of the lot.

2. Valley de la Luna

Known as the Moon Valley in English, upon entering this surreal nature park it’s not hard to see why. A short but enjoyable series of walking trails lead through a maze of bizarre rock formations, the work of millions of years of erosion. This classic half day excursion can be part of a tour ; head there by taxi for around 35BOB ($US5) or any bus heading to Mallasa for 2.60BS (US$.040).

3. Cañon de Palca

Not far from the city center lies Palca, where a tranquil rural paddock opens up into a spectacular canyon that is brimming with surreal formations of eroded sedimentary rock. The canyon goes on for miles, with plenty of twists and turns, waterfalls and streams. Most people visit on a guided tour to avoid getting lost, but those who prefer a little seclusion can get there by jumping on any minibus (2BOB/US$0.30) heading south (marked Ovejuyo or Palca) and asking the driver where to hop off.

5. Tiwanaku

5. Tiwanaku

This expansive pre-Columbian city was built by the most powerful indigenous empire of the time, who out date even the mighty Inca. The two hour drive is worth it to explore this fascinating archaeological site with its intricately carved stone faces, impossibly large building blocks and the monolithic Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate), believed to be an early astrological calendar. Tours depart daily, or jump on a bus heading to Desaguadero from the Cementerio district in La Paz and get off at the Tiwanaku intersection.

7. Cholita Wrestling

Sunday evenings play host to one of the country’s weirdest and most wonderful sporting events. A crowd of dedicated locals and curious travelers come together to cheer on a group of feisty Cholitas (indigenous women) as they punch, kick and body slam men who are representative of their abusive husbands. Despite the somber theme, it’s a rowdy and colorful affair that draws in many a laugh from an appreciative crowd. Most people go on a tour but it’s possible to get their via the red cable car line.

City Travel Guide: 6 Great Day Trips Around La Paz, Bolivia

La Paz, Bolivia has so much going for it that we couldn’t cover it all in just one post, so welcome to our 3-part La Paz city travel guide series! Part 3 reveals great day trips around La Paz including exploring the Tiwanaku archaeological site, braving Bolivia’s Death Road, where to hike through dramatic landscapes, and much more.

Huayan potosi over la paz

The peak of Huayan Potosi, at 19,974 feet (6,088 meters), rises north of the city of La Paz, Bolivia. Fit travelers can climb this mountain on guided adventures with local tour companies. Eric really wants to do this, but we’ve never been in La Paz during climbing season.

Day trips around La Paz, Bolivia

It’s true that there are plenty of things to do in the city of La Paz , but the city also makes a great base from which to enjoy these diverse day trips.

1. Bolivia’s Death Road

Beginning of North Yungas road, Bolivia's death road.

The infamous North Yungas Road, aka Bolivia’s Death Road, as it snakes around a mountain.

A 23 mile (37 km) stretch of dirt road in the mountains west of La Paz is one of the most notorious roads in the world. Dozens of people have lost their lives in traffic accidents on the extremely narrow and curvy road and it’s said that the road was also used by the Bolivian government as a place to toss opposition members into the gorge below during the revolution in the country in the 1950s. For those reasons, the North Yungas Road is now more commonly known as the Death Road. A less-lethal paved highway was built in 2007 and most vehicle traffic now takes that route between La Paz and Coroico, bypassing the Death Road completely. In recent years, the Death Road has become a playground for guided groups of bicyclists (many tour companies in La Paz offer this trip) and by drivers, like us. See what all the fuss is about in our full post about driving Bolivia’s Death Road .

2. Valley of the Moon

Valle de la Luna la paz

The otherworldly landscapes found at Valley of the Moon.

Take a taxi about 7 miles (10 km) south of the city to explore an area of jagged, steep, hillsides that have been dramatically eroded by wind and water. The area is appropriately named Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) and an easy loop trail (allow about an hour) winds through the otherworldly landscape. You’ll pass formations with names like The Turtle Shell and The Cholita’s Hat, but mostly you’ll be surrounded by unnamed formations as far as the eye can see. It really does look and feel like another world.

3. Tiwanaku archaeological site

Tiwanaku temple day trips around La Paz

This sunken temple is one of many highlights of the Tiwanaku archaeological site.

The Tiwanaku archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000, is a testament to the still little understood Tiwanaku pre-Columbian culture. About 50 miles (80 km) from La Paz, the site is at 12,600 feet (3,850 meters) on the Altiplano near the southern shore of Lake Titikaka. The settlement started small around 100 AD and steadily grew, eventually becoming an innovative urban and cultural center. A sophisticated drainage system, semi-underground temples, carved stone heads, pyramids, sandstone pillars, the 10 ton Sun Gate carved from a single slab, and much more make this site diverse and compelling. An onsite museum contains finds from the site including pottery, arrowheads, and a mummy. Another onsite museum houses some of the site’s most iconic carved stone monoliths. Get all the know-how about exploring this site in our full post about Tiwanaku .

4. Palca Canyon

Palca Canyon hike day trips around la paz

Hikers can wander through a scenic section of Palca Canyon on a day trip from the city of La Paz.

Hiking through Cañon de Palca (Palca Canyon) is a great way to see farming communities and enjoy a scenic canyon walk (many tour companies in La Paz offer this as a guided day trip). We started our Palca Canyon hike at Allkamari Boutique Eco Resort & Spa which is located just east of the city. From there, we walked through fields and villages before dropping into the canyon where we followed the wide, rocky, mostly-dry riverbed gently downhill, passing dramatic canyon walls eroded by wind and water. About five hours later we reached the town of Palca where a van was waiting to take us back to Allkamri for an excellent and well-earned lunch of Andean favorites at their Luz Andina restaurant. Be prepared for about five hours of walking in the sun (there’s very little shade) over medium to large river stones. Wear good shoes, good sunscreen, and a hat, and bring plenty of water.

5. Mamani Mamani murals in El Alto

Mamani Maman murals Wiphala buildings

The high altitude art of Roberto Mamani Mamani in the form of murals in the city of El Alto above La Paz.

Roberto Mamani Mamani is one of Bolivia’s most famous artists and he draws on his Amayra heritage to create warm depictions of traditional life and Andean landscapes in very vibrant colors. His work comes in many shapes and sizes, including massive murals on the buildings that make up the Wiphala housing complex in the city of El Alto on the Altiplano above the city of La Paz. If you have your own vehicle, as we do, you can easily drive to this housing complex and see the art for yourself. Otherwise, some tour companies in La Paz offer guided tours with transportation to see these murals. See all of the murals and learn the story behind them in our photo essay about the Mamani Mamani murals in El Alto .

6. Lake Titikaka, Isla de la Luna, and Isla del Sol

Isla del Sol Cordillera Real Bolivia

Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna in Lake Titikaka are worth exploring.

Lake Titikaka (spelled Titicaca locally) is the highest navigable lake in the world and a top tourist destination in Bolivia. The lake is also home to two culture-rich islands, Isla de la Luna and Isla del Sol, where the Inca, who considered the lake sacred, built temples that you can visit to this day. It’s a very, very long day trip from La Paz, but many tour companies offer guided journeys to the lake and the islands and back again. It’s worth it if this is your only chance to get to the lakeside town of Copacabana , Lake Tittkaka, and these islands–though we recommend exploring the lake at a more leisurely pace by spending a few days in Copacabana. Full details are in our post about exploring Isla de la Luna and Isla del Sol .

La Paz, Bolivia travel tips

Flights to La Paz land at El Alto International Airport, the world’s highest international airport, at 13,323 feet (4,060 meters) on a plateau above the city. Chances are, that’s much higher than wherever you’re flying in from so you’re likely to feel the altitude. Common effects of altitude are shortness of breath and fatigue, but you can mitigate those feelings by avoiding over-exertion, drinking lots of water (but only the purified kind, never water from the tap), and limiting alcohol which goes to your head faster at altitude.

achumani la paz

The view from the apartment we rented in Achumani in the Zona Sur area of La Paz.

Also, we got pickpocketed while walking around the central downtown area of La Paz (only the second time that’s happened on the whole journey), and we’re not alone. Don’t carry unnecessary valuables around with you in La Paz and be sure anything you are carrying is secure.

Thoroughly off the beaten path and still overlooked by many travelers headed to South America, the world’s highest capital city of La Paz, Bolivia, is a delightful mix of cultures, history, gastronomy, and landscapes . After visiting almost all the major cities in Latin America , I have to say that La Paz is one that was a pleasant surprise.

Grab your hiking boots: in this ultimate traveler’s guide to La Paz, Bolivia, we share the very best this city has to offer, including recommendations for where to stay, things to do in La Paz , and travel tips to help make your trip unforgettable, whether you’re sticking around or headed on to the Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats .

La Paz Bolivia

Perched high in the Andes Mountains, La Paz is perhaps best known as the world’s highest capital city at 11,975 ft (3,650 m). Thoroughly off the beaten path and under the radar, La Paz isn’t widely known for much else, though this isn’t for lack of unique things to do in La Paz and destinations to visit around the city.

La Paz is a sprawling city in a stunning valley with a historic center at its heart. Crawling up the sides of the mountain are the city’s ever-expanding neighborhoods, which you can glimpse from above by riding the cable car system, an absolute must for travelers.

You’ll also spot the breathtaking snow-capped Illimani mountain towering over the city , a cherry on top of the already impressive topography of the city. If you’ve had some mountaineering experience before, you can attempt the challenging climb to the summit or head to nearby Huayna Potosi, an even more popular climb.

While tourism in Bolivia is growing, it isn’t on par with the visitor numbers that its Andean neighbors like Peru or Ecuador enjoy just yet. We think this is all the more reason to visit La Paz sooner rather than later. You’ll enjoy stunning landscapes, unique cultural experiences, and bucket list destinations, all with minimal other travelers there to alter the experience.

Backpacking in La Paz

La Paz is quite popular on backpacking routes in South America , as many backpackers appreciate how incredibly affordable the city can be and how much it has to offer. You’ll find countless hostels and affordable hotels in La Paz perfect for backpackers, and be surprised by how far your travel dollar will get you here.

Stick to neighborhoods like Sopocachi or el Centro if you’re traveling as a backpacker – you’ll find affordable backpacker accommodations here, great food, and plenty of things to do.

Luxury Travel in La Paz

If you’re looking for luxury, consider staying in Zona Sur where you’ll find beautiful design hotels like MET Hotel (our recommendation for the best hotel in the city). Though about 30 minutes by taxi from the bustling historic center , this area has posh restaurants and hotels and is much quieter than the northern part of the city.

Even luxury travel is relatively affordable in La Paz, with the nicest hotels in the city rarely costing more than $200 a night. If you’re looking for a place to travel in a bit more luxury than you might normally consider, La Paz might be the perfect place.

Is La Paz Bolivia Worth Visiting?

La Paz, Bolivia, is certainly well worth visiting! While it isn’t a major tourist destination, the city has a lot to offer and is among the best cities in Latin America for travelers . From charming historic architecture and beautiful mountain views to inspiring ways for cultural connection and countless opportunities for great day trips , La Paz is well worth an addition to your itinerary.

How Many Days Do You Need in La Paz?

Travelers generally need at least two days to enjoy La Paz and see the city’s major attractions. If you’re looking to include a day trip outside of La Paz on your itinerary, choose to spend three days in La Paz!

With this in mind, it’s important to factor in how altitude might affect you during the days you’ve set aside for La Paz in your itinerary. If you’re arriving in La Paz from much lower altitudes, I’d recommend giving yourself an additional day to adjust.

While most travelers will feel slightly more out of breath when walking or hiking, if you don’t know how you’ll react to the altitude, it may be best to budget an extra day.

things to do in la paz

Things To Do in La Paz, Bolivia

1. Visit the Witches Market

One of the most unique destinations in La Paz is certainly the Witches Market, El Mercado de las Brujas y La Hechiceria . This market in central La Paz is run by traditional healers and sells everything from statues and medicinal herbs to desiccated frogs and llama fetuses, thought to bring good luck if buried in the foundation of a building.

It’s certainly a unique destination, best visited with a local guide to help you make sense of what you see. Red Cap offers extremely affordable (just 3 USD!) walking tours of the market and the historic center of the city, which are a great choice for travelers on any budget.

2. Take in a Cholita Wrestling Match

You may have heard of Lucha Libre, but what about Cholita wrestling ? This incredibly unique and unforgettable wrestling match is a favorite for visitors to La Paz, featuring indigenous women wrestling in a ring all while wearing their colorful traditional skirts.

Tickets are affordable , and you’re bound to have a great time watching these ladies battle it out in the ring. Events can garner hundreds or even thousands of spectators and help support the wrestlers and their families economically in the process.

3. Ride the Cable Car

La Paz is a city with spectacular views from every corner, but none can beat the views from the city’s famous cable car, known as the world’s highest and longest cable car system. You can ride the cable cars on your own or book a cable car “tour” with a guide who will help you navigate the city’s most popular lines and learn about the neighborhoods and destinations along the way.

4. Explore the Historic Center

A visit to La Paz wouldn’t be complete without checking out the city’s historic center, including Plaza Murillo at the center with its lovely Baroque architecture. The central historic heart of La Paz isn’t too huge, so it can easily be explored in just a few hours of wandering.

Make sure to visit Iglesia San Francisco , open in the afternoon on weekdays and in the morning on the weekends. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the rooftop of the church for some stunning views!

5. Take in the View at Killi Killi

Situated just above central La Paz, the viewpoint at Killi Killi is one of the best spots to take in a view of La Paz. From the towering buildings of the financial sector to historic plazas and the surrounding mountains, you’ll really be able to see everything from this scenic hilltop.

You can walk to the viewpoint, though with La Paz’s elevation, taking an inexpensive taxi from the historic center might be your best bet.

Day Trips From La Paz Bolivia

Valle de la luna (valley of the moon).

Located just a few kilometers outside of La Paz, the unique scenery and easy drive to the Valley of the Moon make it one of the most popular day trips from La Paz. With its impressive white limestone chimney formations created by centuries of erosion, the landscape is so other-worldly that it is said that Neil Armstrong himself drew the comparison to the moon.

The Valley of the Moon had a few hiking trails to choose from , all relatively easy and leading to distinct viewpoints over the unique rock formations. The best is to the Devil’s Point viewpoint, though fitting in several is easy even within a short visit.

The Valley of the Moon is so close to La Paz that you can easily travel here by booking an affordable group trip or by organizing your own transportation.

The Death Road

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider choosing to bike down the Death Road on your day trip from La Paz! Small group excursions from La Paz to the world-famous Death Road are actually extremely popular, and guided tours are very well done.

Death Road biking excursions include a practice session before actually getting on the Death Road and stops for photos, water, and snacks, as well as a van following along in case you’re winded or would prefer to ride along. It’s an unexpectedly fun excursion and not as terrifying as you might think.

Home to the unique “floating islands” called uros made of reeds, Lake Titicaca is both visually stunning and a fascinating place to learn about Bolivia’s history and heritage.

While a visit to Lake Titicaca can be completed in just a day, you’ll enjoy the area much more if you can spend at least a night here. You’ll be able to see much more of the lake and surrounding ancient ruins, learn more about the lake’s unique floating islands, and not have to do so much traveling in one day.

La Paz Travel Tips

1. take altitude seriously.

Even if you’re young and fit, the altitude in La Paz is likely some of the highest you will have ever experienced, which can affect you in surprising ways. It’s quite common to feel lightheaded, tired, and a bit out of breath when walking or exerting yourself for the first few days when you arrive.

Plan your itinerary accordingly : don’t plan a major hike right after you step off the plane, for example. Give yourself at least a day or two!

You’ll also want to make sure to drink plenty of water, avoid coffee and alcohol, and get lots of sleep to help you get adjusted. Make sure to drink tea made from coca leaves, an ancient Bolivian remedy for altitude sickness, or bring along some supplements designed to help altitude acclimatization .

2. Learn About Bolivia’s Indigenous Populations

Home to 36 unique people groups, Bolivia is defined by its indigenous populations and their languages, cultures, and histories. Taking some time to learn about Bolivia’s indigenous peoples isn’t just a unique thing to do – it’s crucial to understanding Bolivia.

Almost half of Bolivia’s population ( 41% as of the 2012 census ) identifies as indigenous, and you’re certain to hear indigenous languages like Quechua and Aymara no matter where you travel in Bolivia. You’ll also want to visit La Paz’s Mercado de las Brujas and La Hechiceria (Witches Market) to learn about indigenous traditions or consider a food tour with a local guide .

3. A Little Spanish Goes a Long Way

Don’t underestimate how far just a little Spanish will get you! English is not commonly spoken in La Paz and is even spoken less than you might expect in the tourism sector , so learning just a few key phrases will be a lifesaver. 4. Practice Travel Safety

La Paz can get a bad rap for being unsafe, but the city actually has lower crime rates than many others that are probably already on your South American travel itinerary . However, wherever you travel, it’s important to practice travel safety to keep yourself and your belongings safe.

For example, carry your backpack or purse in front of you while using public transport or in crowded areas like markets. Use an s-biner micro lock to clip your backpack or purse zippers closed. Keep your cell phone or camera secured in your bag, and only take it out when you’re using it. These are just a few easy ways to stay safe while traveling.

Perfect Day Somewhere

La Paz Itinerary: The Highest City In The World

la paz day trips

La Paz intimidated me at first due to its not-so-hot reputation. I didn’t know what to expect, whether I’d feel safe and how the altitude would affect me after what I experienced in Per u. Having found many warnings for this destination, my nerves were pretty heightened for this trip despite being a not-so-nervous traveler, to begin with. Was La Paz as sketchy as people made it sound? Yes and no. Although I felt pretty safe and welcomed, I’d be lying if I said I was completely relaxed. It was indeed one of my favorite destinations simply because of how unique and authentic it was.

With this La Paz itinerary and useful resource for your travels , I hope to show you that this is a one-of-a-kind destination. I want to prepare you for what to expect, what to see, and how to make the most of this Bolivian adventure.

This post will try to cover the basics of everything you need to know about traveling to La Paz, things to see, and most importantly give you free downloadable itineraries at the bottom of the post! This is your one-stop for everything you need to know about traveling to La Paz.

Let’s get to the logistics of visiting La Paz, Bolivia

La Paz in Bolivia is a hidden gem to an average traveler. Backpackers, however, invaded the city a while back. It’s not as crowded with tourists as its next-door neighbors, Lima or Cusco for example, which makes this city a very unique destination. Tourism in places with high levels of poverty can be tricky but if done consciously, can tremendously help the economy. I hope that my small footprint was able to help as well.

Full Bolivia itinerary

Before we dive into La Paz specifics, for your reference, my personal Bolivia itinerary included the cities below. I’d say they’re the most popular Bolivia places to see:

  • Flew into La Paz to take a bus into Copacabana (base for Lake Titicaca) and stayed there a night to acclimate.
  • Then took a boat to Isla del Sol on Lake Titicaca with an overnight stay there.
  • Returned to Copacabana to take a bus back to La Paz to stay there for 4 days.
  • Next stop from La Paz to Uyuni for a 3 day Salt Flats tour.
  • After the tour, I took an overnight bus to Sucre and stayed there for 4 days.
  • My last stop was Santa Cruz to which I took a flight from Sucre. I stayed there for another 3 days.

Bolivia travel budget

Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in South America so traveling there was really cheap. Here is a rough idea of how much things cost there for me in 2019 for the entire trip:

  • Flights: NYC to La Paz, Sucre to Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz to NYC: $550
  • Other transport including taxis and buses: $80
  • Uyuni Tour: $140
  • Hotels and hostels: $200
  • Food: Most meals are under $5, more upscale restaurants are $20 for dinners, and really boujee places $50 for a special night out.

Traveling to Bolivia as a US citizen

While most countries don’t need a visa while traveling to Bolivia, the US relationship with the country made it mandatory to get one. That’s why it was quite rare to find many American travelers there. Obtaining a visa was fairly straightforward and I got one at the New York Bolivian embassy for a hefty fee of $160 USD.

Good news for you my fellow traveler, as of 2020’s change of presidents, US citizens are no longer required to get a visa for Bolivia. However, you should always check if that’s still the case at the time of your travels.

Surviving high altitude in La Paz, Bolivia

DSC03334 Bolivia

La Paz is located at 11,900 feet above sea level, and its El Alto neighborhood is even higher at 13,615 feet. It’s the highest administrative capital in the world. That’s pretty high. To quickly compare, Denver, Colorado is only a little over 5,000 feet. What happens to you at such a high elevation, is that your body can no longer take in the same amount of oxygen per breath. This condition is called hypoxia. Having less available oxygen makes your head hurt, you’ll feel confused and tired and it will be hard to breathe too.

The first time I experienced pretty bad symptoms of altitude sickness was when I visited Cusco. When I was going to Bolivia, I wanted to be prepared so I researched ways to make this process less painful. I found out that you have to take Acetazolamide or Diamox , a high blood pressure medication that can ease your symptoms of altitude sickness. I went to the doctor and got my prescription ready.

This is what it felt like for me: My doctor suggested starting the meds 3 days prior to arrival. After landing, I felt my head get a little heavy but not as bad as it did in Peru. My first stop in Bolivia was Copacabana and I was pretty ok throughout the day. At night, however, I got a headache that felt like my brain was about to explode. I cried because I thought it was my last day on earth, not kidding. To my surprise, I managed to fall asleep and woke up totally fine. After that, I did not have any more major issues while traveling the rest of Bolivia.

How to survive altitude sickness:

  • Give yourself a day to do nothing and get your body used to the brutal altitude. Read a book, lay around and whatever you do, do not drink alcohol!
  • Instead, drink tons and tons of water before and when you get there.
  • If you know you will get sick based on prior experience, consider getting a prescription from your doctor for Acetazolamide or Diamox, a blood pressure medication that has a positive effect on altitude sickness. Its mechanism of action is believed to make your blood more acidic thus making oxygen stick to hemoglobin molecules in your blood a little better. I used it, and although it didn’t save me completely, it helped a lot compared to my experience in Cusco.
  • If your symptoms get really bad, you can ask for oxygen at the hotel or you can descend to a lower altitude if possible.

Where to stay in La Paz

Staying in La Paz’s Center area is your best bet for a short stay. It’s the safest for a tourist, you’ll be central to everything and you can pretty much get anywhere from there. It’s kind of dirty and chaotic so if that’s important to you it might not be the best choice. Sopocachi is the hip area to be in. Although a little further away, it’s connected well to the center. The Zona Sur has more financial district/shopping/wealthy area vibes but I don’t know if I would recommend it for your first visit to the city.

Basically, anywhere you stay, nice hotels are cheap, and Airbnbs even cheaper for penthouse-like views. Hostels can be even found for $5 a night and are a great time in this country.

I stayed at Wild Rover, a known party chain hostel. It was good for coordinating a walking tour, the death road trip, and transfer to my next destination and obviously, it had a great social atmosphere. Honestly, I would only recommend it to a traveler that knows what they’re getting themselves into. It’s a party hostel meaning your door will probably be open all the time, people will be loud and obnoxious and your room will not have the accommodations you might expect. However, it is a unique experience for backpacking and if you’re going to stay in one at some point in your life, this city is a good option for it.

How to navigate La Paz

Landing at the airport is an experience within itself. The views upon landing are incredible. To get to your accommodation, you can pre-book a cheap taxi or take the city bus 212 which offers many convenient stops in the city.

La Paz itself is huge. Like seriously a huge city with some sketchy neighborhoods too. Mine and everyone else’s favorite way of getting around the city is the Teleferico, the coolest public transport I have ever been on. This post describes the experience very nicely! When you check out the most current map, make sure to pay attention to which lines are being built vs. which exist. I made the mistake of thinking there was a line and getting stuck on the other side of the city.

If you’re scared of heights, you have the option of taxis, Ubers, micro, or minibusses. Make sure that you take a radio taxi for your safety. I took the minibus where the route is displayed on the window and where you yell at the driver where to get off. It was a very local experience and I loved taking that authentic ride in the city too.

People & Safety in Bolivia

Tourism isn’t as popular in this city as it is in other South American countries so you’ll get a mix of reactions from local people. Most were very friendly, helping me out when I got lost in El Alto to get me back home. I do speak conversational Spanish so I’m sure that it helped too. Others weren’t as welcoming as one would ideally like. A taxi driver charged me an insane fare when I ventured out into the local town and left me with no choice but to pay. Another not-so-memorable moment was getting some crazy looks and comments while shopping in a remote, non-tourist area.

As far as safety, you should be fine but also aware that you are traveling to a very poor place. Second poorest after Venezuela in South America. Poverty, unfortunately, forces some people into doing bad things. There are stories of ATM kidnappings, fake police officers asking you for your papers, or fake travelers approaching you with a scam. Here is a good post on the most common scams in La Paz, Bolivia

Walking alone at night is not a good idea, especially if you’re a girl. I personally had no problems in the city despite all the warnings. For comparison, I experienced theft in Spain twice and that’s supposed to be a “richer” country. So stay alert, don’t be naive, and don’t assume everyone is out to get you.

Most Bolivians are extremely nice and welcoming people. Embrace that but don’t go blindly trusting everyone that approaches you.

169 Bolivia

Food in La Paz

I’m guilty of eating most of my food in La Paz at my hostel. I ventured out to a couple of restaurants and loved the dishes but I certainly did not eat my way through the city as I did in Sucre or Santa Cruz . Therefore, aside from telling you how much I love salteñas, I am not a good resource for this section. Instead, read this short and super sweet guide from Temporary Provisions for food to eat and restaurants to try while visiting this city.

Sightseeing in La Paz, Bolivia

The city has a decent amount of things on your La Paz itinerary and a three-day trip to the city is enough to see the highlights and get the local vibe. There are a couple of day trips you will want to take so that can add some length to your stay. This city truly does offer some weird things to do though so rather than passing it on your gringo trail, embrace it.

Bolivia as a country has a lot of interesting places to see so spending a long in La Paz may not be necessary unless you plan on working from there. See a list of my perfect choices for things to do below.

DSC03304 Bolivia

Perfect Things To Do on Your La Paz Itinerary

Plaza murillo.

The main square of the city, often referred to as the Plaza Murillo, is a must-see attraction when visiting La Paz. Located in the heart of the city, the Plaza is home to several significant landmarks, including the Presidential Palace , the National Congress of Bolivia , and the Cathedral of La Paz . The Plaza is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, with many people enjoying an afternoon stroll around the square, watching the hustle and bustle of city life, and observing the many vendors selling food and trinkets. If you take a walking tour of the Plaza, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the rich history of this important cultural and political hub. It’s worth noting that demonstrations and protests can sometimes take place in the Plaza, so it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and avoid any potential dangers.

197 Bolivia

Mi Teleferico

Technically not an official sightseeing attraction, but simply the best and coolest way to see La Paz. Mi Teleferico is a super modern, clean, and high-tech cable car, that for a very small price of 3 Bolivianos or about 0.50 cents a ride, lets you see the city from above. Transfers aren’t included so you will need to buy a ticket for each line change.

I couldn’t hype this up enough as I have never experienced anything like it before. Seeing the city from that many angles and from that height was simply insane. Seeing Illimani in the background was even crazier.

Oh, and if you’re fascinated by those types of vistas, don’t forget to make your way over to Mirador Killi Killi for some stunning views of the city too. If possible, try to catch some night views too.

DSC03336 Bolivia

Markets in La Paz

The most known one, The Witches Market, is a weird place, mostly curated for tourists. It sells witch-like things such as potions, llama fetuses, and many other sacrificial objects. You will either be weirded out or fascinated by it. I personally found it a cheesy souvenir market but still enjoyed browsing around the weird items. Don’t forget to buy the South American gringo medallion, otherwise known as the alpaca sweater. Although I got mine in Peru , there was not a shortage of them here either.

DSC03292 Bolivia

Walk a little further away and you will find a local produce and goods market Mercado Rodriguez , which is an actual authentic spot for locals to do their grocery shopping. There is also a more everyday item market, Mercado Negro, or an artisanal Ayni Market .

Another cool spot is the market in El Alto neighborhood which happens on Thursdays and Sundays. It’s huge and considered one of the biggest in South America. I found it fascinating and loved the very local vibe it offered. I scored some awesome street salteñas there too. Note that since this is a very local market, the majority of the items there will be of no use to you, like auto parts or household items. It’s more so for a local experience than anything else.

My personal favorite was Mercado Lanza, which is an indoor place with fresh juices and other great local food choices. I recommend it for grabbing a lunch bite. Very authentic and more importantly, very tasty 🙂

DSC03332 Bolivia

Plaza San Francisco

Plaza San Francisco is another major square located in La Paz, and it is known for its busy atmosphere due to its central location at the intersection of several major roads. While the Plaza itself may not have many activities or attractions, it is situated next to a popular market and is home to the impressive San Francisco Cathedral. Visitors can enter the cathedral for free, but there may be a fee for taking a tour or accessing certain areas of the building. Despite its busy location, Plaza San Francisco is worth a visit for its historic and cultural significance, and for the opportunity to explore the beautiful cathedral.

DSC03286 Bolivia

Calle Sagarnaga

I really liked this street despite its reputation for being a tourist trap. It has cheesy souvenir shops, bars, and restaurants. I would certainly recommend visiting it despite it being a gringo trap. It will most likely be on your route to the Witches Market too. Don’t forget to get at least one typical gift there, for example, a cute little alpaca that you can drag all the way home with you 🙂 Yes, I have one, and yes I pet it at least once a week till this day.

205 Bolivia

San Pedro Prison

If you haven’t heard of this place, you MUST and I repeat, MUST read this amazing article about it. I learned about this prison on a walking tour and I was immediately fascinated with its history and current operating status. What I also learned, however, is how dangerous this place is to the locals and how the prisoners run criminal activities from the inside. So while I was blown away but how it functions, I am also aware of how horrible it is.

There are some insane tourists that choose to take a tour inside with one of the prisoners offering to smuggle them in as a “relative”. It’s actually quite a popular thing to do in town. I’m always down for some crazy and stupid things to do when I travel, however, this is the one thing I chose to stay away from. Remember, if you are considering this type of tour, you’re not exploring a local sketchy neighborhood, you’re going to a walled community of thousands of criminals. Instead, just choose a good walking tour that will give you the gist of what you need to know.

228 Bolivia

Valle de la Luna

Valle de la Luna or Valley of the Moon is out of this planet maze of rocks that will blow your mind. It seriously looks like you’ve transported yourself to outer space. To get there, take the green Teleferico to the end and then a short taxi to the entrance. Another option is a taxi or Uber, a colectivo or you can also book an organized tour. It’s not really necessary to have a guide there I would save you the money. The entrance fee is about $3. Prepare to spend 1 to 2 hours there or even longer if you’re taking some cool pictures.

Estadio Hernando Siles

It’s not a secret that South America is obsessed with futbol . Why not do something unique and head to the local stadium to catch a team play at this ridiculously high altitude. I learned about this place after some people from the hostel were heading out to watch a game. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to go but all the fellow travelers that experienced it loved the vibe. Tickets run about $20 if you get them last minute and depending on who is playing. Catch the national team play there with the potential of seeing other major South American teams too.

Is street art and off-the-radar neighborhoods something you enjoy? Then look no further than the unique neighborhood of Chualluma. Your best bet is to take a taxi there but The Partying Travel describes how to get there in a more DIY way. It seems like this is an upcoming neighborhood for a hot insta-spot in the near future. Don’t put it on your radar for that but rather the story behind the art. Read the fascinating story about recent art here .

Cholitas Wrestling Match

I heard mixed reviews about this activity. What is it you ask? It’s sorta like a Bolivian WWE show where women in traditional attire and long braids wrestle each other as people gather to watch in plastic chairs around the ring. What? Yes, you read that correctly. For me, it was too cheesy and not something I cared to experience. Some friends from the hostel, however, appreciated to strange activity. Here is a good reference in case you’re interested.

La Paz is a fun city to party in. All the top party hostels have daily drinking events and many themed nights. I spent all my nights at Wild Rover mainly due to the fact that I met some awesome people there. We enjoyed sharing travel stories over cheap beers and watching fellow backpackers make idiots of themselves too. For a more sophisticated scene head to Sopocachi.

Note, the city is also known for some nasty cocaine bars that tourists seem to chase. Truth is, you’re probably putting yourself at unnecessary risk and getting scammed by buying shit cocaine. All I have to say is be smart if that’s your vice but there are much cooler things to do compared to a dungy basement with gringo coke.

Day Trips for your La Paz itinerary

Despite its huge popularity, this was one of the main highlights of my trip to Bolivia. This dangerous road received its reputation from the old days where its yearly death toll reached about 300 casualties. It’s much much safer now and if you’ve ridden a bike in your life and don’t have a fear of heights, you will be fine. Don’t underestimate its danger though. There are some parts of it which if you’re not paying attention could be very dangerous. A couple of narrow turns made my stomach seriously drop so if you are not a fan of adrenaline, don’t be a hero.

Unless you have a bike in Bolivia, you will need to book a tour. There are many companies offering a similar excursion so make sure to find one that has a good safety record. Your journey will start early in the morning on a paved road. This part will get you used to the bike and the conditions. At this altitude and this time of the day, you will be crazy cold. Then, you will continue on the actual death road which for the most part is unpaved. The views are like nowhere else and it’s such an incredible experience.

Don’t worry if you’re a slow biker, there will be a van following the last person making sure you’re safe. During the tour, you will stop a couple of times for small breaks, for lunch and of course for pictures. The ride will end in a warm jungle with a pool and drinks to relax and celebrate conquering this adventure.

Between the transport, stops, and extras that your tour company offers, expect this to be a 5-6 hour excursion and will cost you close to $100. It’s not cheap but it’s 1000% worth the hype.

253 Bolivia

Valle de las Animas

Valley of the Souls is the perfect name for this place. It’s empty, extremely quiet, and borderline eerie. However, the landscape and views of Illimani make it a perfect destination for your La Paz adventure list. Hiking this gem was no joke but it was simply stunning. Don’t try to do this during a rainy day either as the conditions become a lot tougher. There are many tours going now compared to when I traveled there and more resources about how to get there depending on which hike you’d like to do.

I took a long bus ride there from La Paz, ended up in the small town of Ovejuyo, and took a taxi to a small village at the Ruta Alterna “entrance”. Mind you, there are no clear signs where to enter or any trails so do yourself a favor and download an offline map. I simply remember just blindly following someone’s directions from TripAdvisor. Although eventually successful, my experience was a little bit messy so I don’t necessarily recommend my way of getting there.

333 Bolivia

This is a really cool day trip to a mountain summit on which you can find an abandoned ski resort. It was once the highest one in the world but after the glacier melted due to global warming, the resort closed. There are a couple of tour operators from La Paz that will drive you there and let you summit this high point in an hour or two. It’s a unique spot but you have to make sure that you’re acclimated before trekking that kind of altitude. A lot of excursions offer a two-part tour during which you will also have the chance to visit the Moon Valley too . It’s a good combo for a full-day trip if you don’t mind the extra cost. Check out this cool post on it from Snow Brains!

Muelle del Diablo

This is another rock formation offering beautiful views of the surrounding area. There are two ways to see it, hike to the top, or just take a taxi that will literally bring you all the way to it. To get there by public transport, take a microbus to the south of the city, then get on a minibus to Pedregal from outside the San Miguel Church. From there you can hike up.

Perfect La Paz Itinerary: FREE downloadable guides for your stay

Although not easy, La Paz is a unique destination. I hope you find its magic as I did and are able to appreciate how special it is.

All my itineraries were made after I traveled to a destination so they are optimized for things I wish I did differently. I hope that my mistakes could help you avoid any bumps in the road. However, if you feel like some plans can be even more perfect, please let me know in the comments below!

Two Perfect Days in La Paz

This itinerary starts with a free walking tour or a self-guided one for which I list all the highlights of the city. In the afternoon, you will explore the city from above in one of the coolest modes of transportation in the world, the Teleferico. For the evening, I suggest a nice dinner as well as checking out a nice viewing spot of the city.

On the second day, you will explore Valle de la Luna and an abandoned ski resort . Then you will relax and explore the culinary scene at night. If you don’t like the choices for day two, feel free to check out the third day from the three-day itinerary for more options on things to do outside the city.

Three Perfect Days in La Paz

The first two days are exactly like the two-day plan. On the third one, however, you will have a choice of an awesome activity. My personal pick is Death Road, but I give you a couple of other options in case that’s too scary for you.

I hope you enjoyed my guide and downloaded my itineraries for your travels. I had an amazing time in Bolivia, at the moment remains the top travel destination I have ever been to. It’s not for every traveler, but if you like amazing views, unique experiences, and a more authentic travel experience, this country should be on your top bucket list.

If you have any suggestions, questions, or comments, please share them below!

La Paz Day Tour: Best Thing To Do!

The full experience in detail of an unforgettable La Paz Day Tour!

la paz day trips

Special thanks to our guest blogger Jenny Wallace for sharing her La Paz Day Tour experience with us!

As my eyes adjusted to the morning light that peeked in my window, I awakened, ready to start the day. Today my boyfriend and I were going to travel with Bolivia Hop, a travel company that was recommended to us by many friends and travelers who had used the service. The trip we chose was the La Paz Day Tour which fit perfectly with our itinerary and seemed to offer a great day activity.

Once we were picked up, we knew this was certainly something new. The idea of a package deal that not only includes easy bus travel with a clean and comfortable bus, but also includes stops and tours along the way with a guide sounded easy, way too easy. As the abominable side of human nature works, skepticism kicked in, and I dared myself to find something wrong, or worse yet, for something to go wrong with today’s trip.

Spoiler alert: the whole experience was perfect and unforgettable.

Check out the awarding-winning La Paz Day Tour that Jenny chose so that you can also have an unforgettable full day experience!

Alejandro leading the La Paz Day Tour

So let’s start from the begging, when we were getting picked up from our hostel. Once we were ready, we went down to reception to wait in the time slot noted in our booking confirmation. To our surpirse, our guide Alejandro (or Ale), was already there, greeting us with a smile. Wow. That had to be the best start to my day! Nothing riles up an OC girl more than tardiness.

We climbed onto the bus and were greeted by sleepy-eyed travelers much like ourselves, all excited to commence the day’s adventure.

After the usual fussing and getting settled in we made our way out of La Paz, passing out through the city, watching the world outside slowly come to life. It was a chilly morning, but we were warmly wrapped with cozy blankets provided by the bus.

At 9:35 am we arrived at the Tiquina Mirador and enjoyed the beautiful viewing point of Lake Titicaca. Its crystal blue waters contrasted nicely with the snow-capped mountains in the background, the Cordillera Real. This place was so picture-perfect, I couldn’t help but take as many pictures as I possibly could.

Alejandro explained that we would be crossing the lake at the strait of Tiquina with a speedboat and the bus would go on a separate barge so we climbed back on the bus and headed towards the lake.

Tiquina Strait Copacabana - La Paz Day Tours

The Strait of Tiquina is a narrower part of Lake Titicaca that allows you to cross easily. Many buses and cars cross on a barge to towns across the water to save on travel time. Our bus was no exception.

While the bus was shipped on a ferry, we hopped on our speedboat and relaxed for a sunny ten minute crossing. Once across, we hopped back on the bus. From this little village it was just an hour more before we arrived to the little fishing town of Copacabana.

Arriving to Copacabana

Located between two hills, Copacabana is a city full of history and culture. With some free time to roam, we spent some time walking through the streets. The cobbled roads, the old Spanish built cathedral, a typical local market, they all lent a charming vibe to this place. The perfect first destination on the La Paz Day Tour.

Copacabana Main Square - La Paz Day Tours

We had lunch at a little lakeside eatery: trucha or trout. This dish is one of the main things eaten here and was served as fresh as it comes, delicious and tasty.

Shore of Copacabana

Our group met at 1pm at an extremely notable spot: The White Anchor . Our guide gave us clear instructions of where we would be dropped off on the island and where to meet the boat again. A handy map was given to each of us so we would know where to go. This was perfect for my particular self as it expressed order to the tour.

Here we hopped on a boat headed for the famous Isla del Sol or Island of the Sun . Gliding through the shimmering waters of Lake Titicaca is the only way to get to these islands.

Gorgeous Isla Del Sol

This tour completely piqued my fancy as I loved the idea of legend and mystical vibes coming together. From what we learned, according to Incan belief Viracocha , the creator god, rose up from the depths of the magical Lake Titicaca and created the sun, stars and moon. The mythical Inti god, or sun god of Incan culture, was born here on the island, giving it its name.

All throughout the island you can find ruins dating back to the 15th century A.D. and see how serious people were about their religion and worship of the Sun god.

Once we alighted the boat on the south side of the island, we made our way to the Pilkokaina temple , or what is also known as the Temple of the Sun . This is one of the more important archaeological sites on the island as it was dedicated as a resting place for the Incan ruler.

Pilkokaina temple, Lake Titicaca

With the sun high overhead, we climbed the hill. With no motorized traffic to be found on this island , there are no roads or paved streets so the island’s main sites can only be accessed by foot . This can prove quite challenging, especially if you are a lightweight like myself.

Once we reached the top, we were rewarded with a spectacular, panoramic view of the Lake in all its splendor. This lovely walk on a perfect day proved to be a great escape from the hustle and bustle of La Paz city life.

After an hour’s walk we made our way back towards the port located on the other side, passing the Yumani fountain , which the Spaniards believed to be the fountain of youth , and the reconstructed Inca stairway made up of exactly 206 steps.

Inca Stairway Isla Del Sol

Meeting the boat at the port at 3:30 pm was the ending to the isla tour. We took the boat back to Copacabana, hopped back on the bus and were dropped off at our hostel from where we began the trip.

Our Verdict on the La Paz Day Tour

Thinking back on the day’s events, I could honestly find no fault in the La Paz Day Tour . Our guide was approachable and friendly, always ready to answer my many questions, the bus was punctual, and most of all it was organized to a tee.

One of the best things about this service (which I honestly thought at first was just a fluff piece for marketing purposes) is the pick up’s and drop off’s they do directly to your hotel or hostel. With all the horror stories I’ve read online and heard through friends concerning the dangers that occur around public bus terminals at night in La Paz , this was a major deciding factor in choosing this tour.

This added service is what completely sold me on this tour and eliminated any preconceived doubts and fears I may have had.

If I were to critique it in any way, I would suggest a Bolivia Hop guide go with us on the island as it would have been amazing to hear all there is to know about the ruins we came across. Other than that, it was perfect! I loved the scenery, the history, the culture and most of all the magic of Lake Titicaca and its surroundings.

4-Day La Paz, Mexico Itinerary for Outdoor Enthusiasts

From visiting stunning beaches and a desert oasis to swimming with whale sharks, this La Paz itinerary is packed with outdoor adventure.

an aerial shot of Balanda Beach in La Paz, Baja MX

La Paz, Mexico feels like an off-the-beaten-track destination, but outdoor enthusiasts have been coming to this gorgeous capital city for ages. Situated on the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur, La Paz is not only home to Mexico’s most beautiful beaches, but it’s also the perfect jumping point for so many exhilarating adventures.

In just four short days, you can swim with whale sharks and sea lions, soak in hot springs, bathe below waterfalls, surf some Pacific waves, and spend a day at the beach.

This La Paz itinerary is based on my experience road-tripping around Baja California Sur, with La Paz as my home base. La Paz was my last stop on a three-month adventure around Mexico.

I quickly fell in love with the area’s rugged beauty and charm. Though Baja is known to attract a lot of Americans (both tourists and expats), La Paz itself feels so far removed from the craziness of tourist hubs like nearby Cabo San Lucas.

The city is Baja California Sur’s capital and its name means “the peace” in Spanish. Locals call themselves “pazians” (peace people in English) and La Paz certainly exudes peace despite its size. Life is slow, locals are warm, and natural beauty abounds. I hope you enjoy La Paz as much as I did.

Discover this best of the region with this 4-day adventure-packed La Paz itinerary.

Where is La Paz?

La Paz is the capital city of Baja California Sur and is located on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula about 2.5 hours north of Cabo San Lucas. La Paz is on the Gulf of California side where the water is more calm than the Pacific side.

This La Paz itinerary works perfectly for folks flying into San José del Cabo as it starts and ends with adventures halfway between Cabo and La Paz. It also works if you fly into La Paz or are arriving via car because the day trips are just an hour or two away from La Paz.

Here is a map of the route with all of the points of interest for this 4-day La Paz itinerary.

Got extra time to spare? Consider doing a full Baja road trip – a very popular route for van lifers in the winter. You can drive all thew way down from San Diego to La Paz.

4-Day La Paz Itinerary

You will need a car for days one and four, though you can easily swap those outings for more local adventures.

As always, feel free to adjust this itinerary as much as you’d like. At the end of this guide, I mention some other things to do in La Paz so you can easily add or subtract whatever interests you most!

Day 1: Hot Springs and Waterfalls

Day one adventures take place in the Sierra Laguna mountains near the small town of Santiago, where desert terrain meets crystal-clear mountain streams and piping-hot natural springs.

Conveniently located 1.5 hours from Cabo and 2 hours from La Paz, so you can either stop in Santiago during a drive between Cabo and La Paz or just take a day trip from La Paz.

Many attractions in the Sierra Laguna are on private property, most hikes are not well documented, and phone service is minimal, so it’s important to plan ahead. Also, you’ll want some water shoes or sturdy sandals and bring plenty of water and some on-the-go snacks !

Note : For traveling in Mexico, I recommend the Grayl Ultrapress Purifier water bottle . It allows you to safely purify water from the tap (or from streams), so you can avoid buying and and using so many plastic water bottles.

I recommend splitting your time in Santiago between the Santa Rita Hot Springs and Sol de Mayo Waterfall hike. Both are located on well-established private ranches that are used to welcoming visitors (though few international tourists make it to these spots).

The two ranches are about twenty-five minutes apart, and are both about twenty minutes from the center of Santiago, on a dusty dirt road. You don’t need 4WD to drive on this road but expect some bumps. We drove it in a Toyota Corolla rental car with no issues.

Start at the Santa Rita Hot Springs , located a five-minute walk from the parking lot of Rancho Santa Rita. After paying a small entrance fee to the rancher (bring cash!), head down the pathway, passing the picnic tables.

The hot springs are located across the small bridge. In front of the bridge, you’ll find a refreshingly cool stream. Switch between the hot springs and the cool stream, and make sure to swim up the stream where a small waterfall is located.

Santa Rita hot springs in Baja, Mexico

Next, head to Rancho Ecologico Sol De Mayo, where you’ll find the gorgeous Sol de Mayo Waterfall . After you park and pay the entrance fee, the rancher will direct you to the trail. Catch stunning views of the river and waterfall above before walking about 10 minutes down to the base of the falls.

Don’t miss swimming in the calm pools beneath the waterfall and enjoy a snack before heading back to Santiago, then to La Paz. Consider stopping at Los Barriles for a seaside dinner, or hold your appetite and enjoy one of La Paz’s restaurants.

Sol de Mayo waterfall in Baja Mexico

Tip:  Some basic Spanish goes a long way in rural Mexico. Though you can certainly explore Santiago and La Paz without speaking Spanish, I recommend memorizing a few basic phrases and terms ahead of time. As always, show respect and gratitude to locals as you explore their private ranches.

Day 2: La Paz’s World-Famous Beaches

No trip to La Paz is complete without a beach day. Most visits to La Paz center around seeing Playa Balandra, which has been called the most beautiful beach in Mexico .

Playa Balandra in La Paz Baja

While Balandra Beach is certainly worth visiting, I recommend planning on visiting other La Paz beaches as well, since Balandra can get crowded and has strict opening hours .

As of November 2023, Playa Balandra typically opens from 8am-12pm, closes for an hour, and then opens again from 1pm-5pm. Entry is limited and visitors are required to leave for the one-hour break each day at noon.

Plan to arrive at 8am to ensure entry and make the most of your time. Most La Paz restaurants and coffee shops aren’t open early, so make breakfast at your hotel. Consider also packing a lunch since dining options are very limited around most La Paz beaches.

Bring a good sun hat , a packable beach towel , and potentially a pair of shoes to walk in. At Playa Balandra you can hike up the cliffs to see the bay from above, rent kayaks to explore the coves and mangroves, hike to nearby Playa El Tecolote, and walk to the famous “mushroom rock”.

After spending the morning at Balandra, head to another nearby beach to enjoy lunch, lounge on the shore, and wade in the calm, shallow water. My personal recommendation is Playa El Tesoro , a stunning beach between downtown La Paz and Balandra with a chill, local vibe, and a beach bar/restaurant.

After a few cervezas or margaritas, head back to town for dinner and a sunset walk along the La Paz Malecon (waterfront boardwalk).

Tip:  If you don’t have a car, you can get to Playa Balandra via bus, DiDi, Uber, but be sure to figure out your return trip ahead of time. You can also book a tour which includes hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Day 3: swimming with whale sharks and a sunset hike.

If you visit La Paz between October and April, you’ll have the opportunity to swim with whale sharks in the Sea of Cortez. This once-in-a-lifetime experience is facilitated by local ecotourism companies and strictly regulated by the local government.

Be sure to book a whale shark boat tour with a reputable company ahead of time since the amount of people and boats is limited each day.

a woman snorkels with a whale shark

If you visit outside of whale shark season or prefer to swim with a different marine species, you can go on a boat tour to Isla Espiritu Santo , which includes snorkeling with sea lions . Just be aware that you can not jump in the water with the sea lions during their breeding season, July through August.

In addition, some tour companies offer combo tours that include swimming with whale sharks and sea lions in one day!

Most tours include lunch and return to La Paz in the early afternoon. Make sure to pack some reef-safe sunscreen , and I also recommend wearing a rashgaurd while you’re snorkeling to keep the sun off your back.

sea lions on a rock in La Paz Baja Mexico

Grab an early dinner and an hour before sunset, head to the Estación de Servicio Repsol gas station, just a few minutes north of downtown La Paz. The gas station is essentially the trailhead for the Cerro de la Calavera hike .

There are several routes to the gorgeous Cerro de la Calavera viewpoint, which overlooks the city and bay. The most direct route is what locals recommended to me, and it takes less than twenty minutes one way . However, another route recorded on AllTrails is 3.8 miles roundtrip.

Whatever route you choose, sure you have close-toed trails shoes and water . A headlamp (or phone flashlight) can also be helpful for the hike back down. Once you reach the top, be sure to watch the sunset and snap a few photos.

Day 4: Exploring La Paz and Todos Santos

Spend your last morning in La Paz exploring the city. Some of the best things to do in La Paz Centro include:

  • Learn about the indigenous tribes of Baja California at the Museum of Anthropology and History
  • Visit the Whale Museum
  • Check out Mexican folk art in the Museum of Art Baja California Sur (free)
  • Chill on the La Paz Malecon beach
  • Search for the city’s gorgeous murals and street art
  • Wander through the Velasco Garden and the main square of La Paz

A beach near the Malecon in La Paz

Whenever you’re ready, jump in the car and drive just over one hour to the Pacific surf town of Todos Santos . If you’re flying out of Los Cabos International Airport, pack all of your luggage in the car since Todos Santos is on the way back to Cabo. Otherwise, treat it as a day trip.

Grab lunch at Alma y Many’s before exploring the colorful streets of Todos Santos. Be sure to walk a few blocks away to the Hotel California , which may or may not have inspired the famous Eagles song.

Wander through the nearby Cielito Lindo Market , which features local artisans. Stop in local boutiques and surf shops, and get a peek at the gorgeous Iglesia Mision Todos Santos and main square.

Next, head twenty minutes down the road to Cerritos Beach, which is known as one of the best surf spots in Baja . The surf at Cerritos is typically suitable for beginner surfers and surfboards can be rented right on the beach.

a person riding a wave on a surf board in Todos Santos baja Mexico

If you don’t surf, just relax on the beach, grab a drink from the bar stall, and walk along the miles-long sandy shoreline.

On your way back to Todos Santos, be sure to stop at 5 Tacos and a Beer for tacos… and beer! From there, you can head back to either La Paz or Cabo.

Best La Paz, Mexico Hotels

Since each day on this La Paz itinerary is packed full of activities, you won’t spend too much time at your hotel. But if you’re trying to figure out where to stay in La Paz, here are my recommendations:

  • Hotel Posada Luna Sol : This budget-friendly hotel is located just steps from the beach in La Paz’s commercial zone.
  • Hotel & Suites El Moro : One of the highest-rated hotels in La Paz, Hotel & Suites El Moro features a water view, a gorgeous pool, and decent prices.
  • Orchid House Baja : In the chance you’re looking for a little luxury, don’t miss Orchid House, a gorgeous beachfront boutique hotel in La Paz.

Additional Things to Do in La Paz, Mexico

If you have extra time or want to swap out certain activities, there are plenty of other things to do in and around La Paz. Here are some other recommendations:

  • Go sandboarding at the Mogote Sand Dunes
