Quad and Buggy Tours Lanzarote

Your buggy tour in lanzarote – information & tips.

Such a cheeky four wheeler attracts everyone’s attention when you drive around with it in Lanzarote. A wide wheelbase, no doors and you won’t find a windscreen either. With this fun car you stick in on the asphalt through the curves and it will get rough and dusty in the terrain. On a buggy tour you experience your vacation island from a completely different perspective.

You have seen such a buggy from afar before and your gas foot already itching. However, you do not exactly know what to expect and if it really is something for you. Well, buggy tours are one of the most popular activities in Lanzarote and you shouldn’t miss out on that either. In the following article you will find that buggy driving is only one thing: fun! We have compiled all information and tips about it, so that you know what to look out for. You will also learn what it is that makes buggy driving so special.

What Is a Buggy?

Buggy tours Lanzarote

In the early 1960s, Volkswagen launched the first motorized buggy in the United States. These were small, two-seater and open cars, which were used a lot by hippies mostly to get to the beach. This way, these vehicles achieved cult status and are still known as beach or dune buggy today. Before that, buggies were only known as one- or two-axle horse-drawn carriages.

The buggy has now disappeared from the beaches. They have become all-terrain, mostly have all-wheel drive and are no longer built by VW. The petrol engines have 250 to 1000 cubic centimeters and can produce well over 100 hp. Manual gears is often omitted. Accelerator and brake pedals are totally sufficient. Despite being street legal, these buggies are not made for everyday use. They are meant to be fun to their owners. Special versions of the buggy are used in off-road races. However, their construction and performance data have little in common with the buggy on Lanzarote.

The interior and equipment are kept to a minimum. You will look for the windscreen, doors and fenders in vain. The suspension of the wheels are visible and the tires are wide and beefy. All this gives the speedster a martial look. If you have only a little gasoline in your blood, you will immediately feel the urge to get in and get going.

Buggy Tours in Lanzarote

Who is a buggy tour on lanzarote made for.

Buggy Lanzarote

If you are looking for something unusual, you will feel comfortable in a buggy. Especially if you don’t mind giving up comfort. Because there is no air conditioning and no power steering to make driving more comfortable. You should also have no problem with the wind blowing in your face. There is no windscreen that protects you from it. As a result, the dust will penetrate through every single opening of your clothes while driving off-road. And in the winter, when the slope is a bit muddy after rainfall, you will also find mud on your face and on your clothes. To make a long story short, if you have a penchant for a rustic adventure and are not afraid of dust and dirt, you are in good hands on a buggy tour.

What Is the Procedure For a Buggy Tour?

Before the tour starts you will receive a briefing from the guide. It is about aspects of safety, behavior on the road and how to operate the buggy. After that your convoy starts and you follow the guide’s buggy for the entire time. Due to the simple design, handling these vehicles will be easy for you. Simply accelerate, hold the handlebar with both hands in the curves. You will notice how the centrifugal force gets your blood boiling. Thanks to its bizarre volcanic landscape, Lanzarote is a perfect area for your buggy tour. Whether it is on or off road, the small power package feels particularly comfortable on the island.

What Happens When Driving Off-road?

Lanzarote buggy tous

In short, off-road means: get off the asphalt road and up on unpaved ground. It doesn’t matter whether you drive your vehicle on slopes, beaches, through fields or forests. In relation to your buggy tour in Lanzarote, this term only points to one thing: fun and lots of it. However, you shouldn’t equate driving off-road with a rally. Your guide will dictate your speed and direction. Racing and overtaking are absolute taboos. In addition to your safety, these restrictions also concern the protection of nature in Lanzarote. But don’t worry your wheels will of course spin in the bends. And when the rear breaks out a bit, you will have to keep it under control. Adventure and adrenaline are an integral part of off-road driving during your buggy tour. Just don’t overdo it!

Can I Hire a Buggy on Lanzarote?

Buggy hire Lanzarote

Most people immediately feel like taking a tour when they see a buggy convoy in Lanzarote. Lanzarote seems to have been specifically created for these speedsters. Dusty sandy slopes, lava and screed fields and excellently developed asphalt roads with countless curves form an El Dorado for buggy fans. But not everyone always wants to join a group with several unknown people. They are rather keen on the idea of hiring a buggy on Lanzarote and checking the site on their own.

Unfortunately, you should first get used to the idea that you will not find a buggy rental on Lanzarote. The risks are too high, and therefore no insurance is willing to insure buggy in individual rentals. But there are other aspects that speak against to hire a buggy. The guides will lead the group to the most exciting spots in Lanzarote. These places are a bit hidden, so you probably wouldn’t find them on your own. During a guided buggy tour you will also ride the off-road slopes with maximum fun. In addition, it is prohibited for individuals to leave the paved roads without an authorization. The buggy tour operators have those special licenses for driving off the public asphalt roads in the field.

Which of the Buggy Tours Is Best For You?

Dune buggy Lanzarote

  • As a beginner:  If you have never driven a buggy before, you should start with a less powerful buggy. Try our  Xtreme Buggy Tour , for example. It may also be advisable to choose a shorter tour.
  • As a savings fan:  You are used to comparing offers well. Please note that not only the price determines the value, but also the performance. Duration, type of vehicles used and whether free hotel transfers are included also play a major role in determining the best offer.
  • As a sightseeing fan:  For those who want to get as much impressions of their vacation island as possible on a tour, it is recommended to chose a longer tour. Because the radius of action is correspondingly larger on these tours. And it is best to inquire where the route will take you beforehand.
  • As an adrenaline junkie:  Everyone looking for thrills and a special kick should watch out for the off-road. Make sure that the tour is conducted off-road in parts and ideally how high the proportion is. In this case, also the engine should be bigger in order to provide you with proper power. We recommend our  Monster Buggy Tour 1000 .

What Are the Requirements For Driving a Buggy?

Buggy tours Lanzarote

  • Driving license:  There are no exceptions. To drive a buggy on the public road, you need the driver’s license class B. The operator will want to see the original before starting the journey.
  • Minimum age:  Depending on the type of tour and the buggy used, the requirements regarding minimum age and driving experience at the different operators may vary. Some require drivers to be at least 21 years old and have minimum 2 years of driving experience. For others, it is sufficient if you are 18. Please check these requirements in the detailed descriptions of the tours under the menu item “Please note!”.
  • Weight:  With some buggy models, the maximum load is quite limited so that it can be critical for two passengers. Therefore, please check under “Please note!” whether a maximum weight is specified and how high it is.
  • Minimum size:  In some cases, the operator requires a minimum body height from the participants. This always applies, regardless of whether the participants are of legal age or not. Please also consult “Please note!”.
  • Children:  Again, the requirements can be different. The minimum age for children can be 4, but also 12 years. You can find the exact information under “Please note!”.

What Is Included in the Tours?

Of course, the tank of the buggy is full when you drive off. You are also insured during the tour. Some operators provide protective glasses against the dust. Some sell cloths for dust protection for a few Euros. Most operators will pick you up from the hotel and bring you back there. Depending on the type and length of the tour, food and drinks can also be included in the price. The inclusive services of our tours can be found under “Services & Prices”.

What Should You Consider When Booking?

Due to the balanced climate in Lanzarote, buggy tours are possible all year round. However, the highest demand is in the summer half-year. If you are planning a buggy tour in Lanzarote from June to September, we advise you to book it a few weeks in advance. Also check our tour descriptions to see if you will be picked up from your holiday resort.

What Should You Have With You on a Buggy Tour?

  • Driving license:  It is mandatory and you must take the original with you on tour. Copies are not accepted.
  • Sturdy, closed shoes:  Sandals or flip-flops are generally not permitted when driving, because you can get caught in the pedals. Put on sneakers For example. They shouldn’t be your best shoes because they get dusted properly.
  • Sportswear:  Wear comfortable clothing that isn’t one of your best. The dust on the off-road part will make them quite dirty.
  • Jackets:  The wind can get really cool. You should particularly, have a jacket with you from October to May. At this time of year it can get really cold inland with the open speedster.
  • Dust protection:  You can get a cloth almost at every shop and also very cheap. When it comes to the dusty off-road slopes, it is absolutely recommended to wear such a cloth to protect your nose and mouth.
  • Sunscreen:  A must. The intensity of sun exposure on Lanzarote is extreme. Pay particular attention to sunscreen with a high sun protection factor.

In the detailed descriptions of our tours you will find the most important specific information again under “Please note!” and “Services & Prices”. Now you know everything about buggy tours in Lanzarote and can choose the right buggy tour for you and your loved ones. Have a lot of fun!

What is Buggies Lanzarote ?

buggy adventure lanzarote

As the name suggests, this is a buggy tour through the arid landscapes of Lanzarote.

The buggies themselves are open vehicles that seat two people, and they can go surprisingly fast with top speeds of up to 40mph. Don’t worry though, everything is very safe!

Driving a buggy is exactly the same as driving a manual with gears and a clutch. I would say the clutch isn’t exactly the smoothest, but that’s all part of the fun! Just expect to stall it a couple of times.

lanzarote buggy adventure

One of the things I really liked about our buggy tour was we were with three different guides at all times – one leading the way, one bringing up the rear, and one in a 4×4 just in case things went wrong.

We also got to explore a lot more of the island than I thought we would. We even made it to the black lava fields of La Geria which was amazing.

The views driving back from that spot were the best. As I said, this is such a special way of exploring the island and seeing what it has to offer.

Going on a buggy experience in Lanzarote

dune buggy lanzarote

Our buggy tour started from Puerto Calero . We met the guys from Buggies Lanzarote at their office and I showed them my driver’s licence.

As a group, we then walked to where all the buggies were parked. One of our guides Tony then talked through what we were doing on our tour and how to get to grips with the buggies. I know it sounds simple, but if you’ve driven a manual car then it won’t take you long getting used to driving the buggies.

From Puerto Calero, we drove as a group along the road for 5 minutes before heading off-road out into the dusty landscape of Lanzarote. This is the first opportunity to open up the engine and rip it over the dirt tracks. It’s at this point the adrenaline really kicks in!

exploring lanzarote

From that point onwards, our tour was a rollercoaster ride of exploring the island. Calling it a rollercoaster ride is the best way to describe it – you really get thrown all over the place. The only respite is when you get back on the flat and easy roads.

One area I absolutely loved was driving through the wine-growing region of La Geria. For those of you who don’t know, Lanzarote produces very decent wine. What makes this so unique though is the vines grow in the black volcanic soil.

la geria lanzarote

On our tour we stopped off at Bodega la Geria , one of the biggest wine producers in the area. Here you can sample some of the wines (be careful if you’re the one driving!) It was definitely a nice addition to the tour though.

In total, our tour lasted 3 hours . You feel pretty wiped by the end of it once all the adrenaline stops – that’s the sign of a great day though!

Hopefully this video will give you a little idea of what the tour is all about!

How much does a Lanzarote buggy tour cost?

lanzarote buggy tour

So there are two tours you can choose from – the 2-hour tour or the 3-hour tour. If you’re a petrol head and feel the need for speed, then I’d recommend the 3-hour tour. That way you’ll see a lot more of the island.

The 2-hour tour costs £80 (€95/$105) for two people

The 3-hour tour costs £95 (€115/$130) for two people

What should you wear?

lanzarote dune buggy

Okay, so you’ve decided to go on a buggy adventure in Lanzarote and you’re unsure what to wear. Well, this section is for you!

Firstly, you need closed shoes. You’re actually not allowed to drive in flip-flops, so don’t even think of bringing them. Ideally, you want trainers and socks on. You can find out more about driving in Lanzarote in my guide here.

We went on our buggy tour in December, so temperatures were naturally colder, but we found it quite chilly driving around. Obviously the buggies are completely open to the elements, so you really feel the wind. My advice would be to bring a layer with you when you’re driving. Not only does this keep you warm, but it protects you from all the dust and gravel being thrown around.

The guys at Buggies Lanzarote supply you with glasses and a buff – this covers your nose and mouth so you’re not catching stones in your mouth like some weird funfair game!

What should you pack?

things to do in lanzarote

  • Your driver’s licence
  • Closed shoes or trainers
  • Layers to put on if you’re cold
  • Water – we probably didn’t bring enough water, so make sure you’re well prepared
  • Hairbands – if you’ve got long hair, you’ll want to tie it up, otherwise it will become very annoying very quickly when driving!

Top tips for the tour

adventure activities lanzarote

Obviously you’re going to want to bring your phone along with you to take some shots while buzzing around, but be careful! It can be very bumpy, and it’s all to easy to drop your phone and smash your screen. One thing Chloe had was a phone strap so it was always securely fastened around her neck or wrist – I’d really recommend picking up one of these beforehand as a sure-fire way of protecting your phone.

A little patience goes a long way! Because you’re driving over very rocky terrain with stones flying everywhere, it’s very common for someone to suffer from a puncture or engine failure. This happened to a couple of people in our group. The good news is the guides from Buggies Lanzarote always have a spare buggy on hand, so if do break down, it’s not long before they switch buggies and get you back on the road.

adventure tour

Explore the marina at Puerto Calero afterwards. Once you’ve finished your Lanzarote buggy adventure, I’d really recommend exploring the marina at Puerto Calero. There are often stalls selling souvenirs, and there are a number of restaurants overlooking the yachts too. We had a lovely meal afterwards at Sushi Bar Minato which made our day even better!

Hopefully this blog post has given you a good overview of what a dune buggy tour in Lanzarote is all about. As I said, this really was one of my favourite experiences while travelling around Lanzarote, and I can’t recommend it enough. Strap yourself in and enjoy the adventure!

Buggy Tours

It is not just another ride, you can carry out a new excursion at the highest level, driving this off-road car with important differences, from the high-competition design of some models of buggies with 800 c.c. and 4-strokes that have adjustable suspension with 4×4 all-wheel drive, even the simplest ones from our buggies displayed and available from our site. We trace the safest routes throughout the archipelago, so that you can have a complete vision of the wonderful spaces of Lanzarote Buggies. We organize routes of great difficulty if you decide on a more complex experience, without neglecting the conditions of total safety. Compared to the quad and kart on open circuits in natural settings, they provide a greater sense of freedom at the speed you prefer. In addition, they are safe in all models and prevent possible overturning or skidding when turning sharply, because their center of gravity is optimal as they are close to the surface, be it dirt or asphalt. In Lanzarote Buggies with current models you can try the routes and cross the entire island, from Puerto Calero to contemplate the wonders that nature offers in this environment. You can advance following our guide through the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches, Playa Quemada, Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and other locations where you have the possibility of accelerating without any problem. Mainly, to travel through rocky or complicated areas, we recommend slowing down with our Buggies.

Great plan to do as a family. I went with my wife and 17-year-old son and we really enjoyed the Bandito Tour. Thanks to Christian, we learned loads of things and saw some impressive views of the island, we had an unforgettable experience.

Awesome. The buggies are automatic and fun to drive and you can take turns at each stop. The tour we did took us to some spectacular places on the island and during the stops Christian, the guide, gave us very good information.

Fun and cultural. We loved the Lanzarote buggy tour as well as the information they gave us about the island’s culture and traditions

It was worth it. We have already done 3 buggy tours since we discovered these tours 3 years ago and every time we come to Lanzarote, we book one vintage buggy excursion after another with OkLanzarote.

Great tour of the island. We did the Phoenix Aloe route and are already thinking about doing another tour the next time we go to Lanzarote

Realy enjoyed. Although we were 4 buggies, Christian was always very close and friendly and cared for each member of the tour at all times. The route was very beautiful and the information that Christian gave us was very interesting.

Incredible afternoon tour. We went with Christian and 2 more buggies to the Salinas del Janubio, Femes and Laguna Verde. We both loved the buggy drive and the places we visited, as well as the service offered

Great service and nice tour. The owners were very friendly and helpful and the buggy route was almost private because we were the only ones on the tour that day.

I loved it. I went with my wife because we wanted to try the experience of driving the vintage buggy and it was much better than expected. The guide was very kind, he made sure to give us a lot of useful information at each stop and ensured we had a good

Great plan to do as a family. Christian and Christiane are fantastic and our experience on the Flor de Phoenix tour was incredible.

Great tour. We went to the Femes, Las Salinas and El Gofo tour for my wife’s birthday and picnicked in an unforgettable place. I recommend this tour to everyone

It was fun. We always drove on the road so it wasn’t as fun as driving the two-seater buggies that do a part of the route on dirt roads, but driving the classic buggy and getting to know the island this way was still worth it

The best way to get to know the island. The guide is very nice and we not only enjoyed the vintage buggy, but we also learned loads of things about the island.

Adventure, culture and fun. The tour is as good as Christian and Christiane’s service. We really enjoyed the tour… It was quite an experience

Great to do with kids. Our children loved going in the buggy and we enjoyed both the driving and the route as well as Christian’s explanations

Phoenix Explorer. We tried this tour because we were going with a child and he could get bored on longer tours but my husband, our child and I had a great time because the buggies were loads of fun and the personnel were super nice

Brilliant Tour “Smoky Wheel”. The tour was fantastic and everything was very well organized. Unfortunately, the volcano route in Timanfaya Park is done by the park bus, not in the buggies.
