EXCELLENT FOOD TOUR ! On Wed, Oct 4th we had a Montmartre Food Tour lined up at 11am which had been booked by our travel agent. OOPS ! It meant we had to jump on the Paris Metro for the first time. With a little help from friendly Parisians on the platform we managed to get to our meeting place on time....Anvers Metro Station. There we met up with our food tour guide Nana and the rest of our tour group. We loved the leisurely walk to all the fascinating shops selling meats, cheeses, crepes, baguettes, macarons, chocolates and more. Our food tour guide Nana proved to be sensational explaining the history of everything on the menu incl wines. At the end Nana took us back to her headquarters where our food tour group enjoyed a virtual French banquet laid on by Nana. WHAT A GREAT EXPERIENCE ! Visited in October 2023 NOTE - Of course with 20 million views of my Yelp reviews and pics world wide in 2023 I can tell you what is great !

I highly recommend the Marais Secret Food Tour! It's got a little bit of something for everyone and takes you to a part of Paris that isn't often explored. Starting at the St Paul station, your tour group will work its way through the alleys and sidewalks of Marais. What I liked about this tour was not only were we able to sample a bit of everything (cheese, falafel, chocolates, macarons, croissants, ganache, croque monsieur), but also got to explore and learn some history to digest our food. Our group had Dalil as our tour guide and we all absolutely adored him! Super down to earth, charismatic, and friendly.

Photo of Heidi M.

One of the best tours I have been on! Dalil (D) was our tour guide on the Le Marais Food Tour and he took us around the beautiful neighborhood visiting some of the best bakeries, cheese shops and chocolatiers in the area, if not Paris. We spent about an hour sitting at a lovely cafe eating some of the cheese and bread we purchased at the shops we visited, tasting some of the local wine and indulging in a tasty croque monsieur. We then walked to the Jewish quarter and indulged in some of the best falafels! Definitely come hungry or ask to have some of the items bagged to take with you because it's a lot to consume in such a short time (est. 3.5 hours). What I loved the most about the tour was the historical aspect of it all... from learning the history of the baguette, seeing the oldest house in Paris. 5 stars all around!

I've done a handful of food tours and this one left me wanting more. We did the Montmartre tour. The neighborhood is amazing with lots of great shops but it is very busy. I was immediately off put because our guide was a little late which left us all wondering if we were in the wrong place. We started by checking out a few neighborhood landmarks, including the wall of love which was neat. The tour started with desserts - a sugared bread (there were not enough for everyone and our guide did not notice) at a local award winning bakery where we also got some history and baguettes for our meat and cheese tasting. Then on to a shop for macaroons, chocolate and hot chocolate. I enjoyed our stop here. We then moved to a small creperie and ended at what I would describe as a storefront for meat and cheese tastings. The room had a long table with wine bottles decorating one side with a bathroom in the courtyard out back. We had the opportunity to learn about 5-6 local meats and cheeses , wine pairings and traditional baguette. I enjoyed the lesson and food, but I thought we would have gone to different restaurants or shops throughout the neighborhood instead of staying in one. I added on the drinks package but the drinks were provided at the end and felt a bit rushed. Perhaps my expectations were off on the experience but I do recommend a trip to Montmartre to checking out the food shops.

We did the chocolate and pastry walking tour in Paris and it was a great time! I was worried it would be a ton of walking or might be a faster pace than I was hoping, but I was happily surprised on both fronts. The pace was great, we were never walking continuously for more than 7-8 mins, I'd say. It was a very comfortable walking speed as well. It was jam packed, we stopped at 6 or 7 different places. (Can't remember now.) I would definitely go on an empty stomach, since you'll be eating a lot of goodies. Would definitely check out another tour they offer in the future!

My parents and I did the St. Germain food tour with Lorca on one of our first nights in Paris. The tour guide and the people on the tour can really make or break a tour- and I'd give Lorca 10 stars if I could- she was incredible. Our group was also awesome- we ended up touring for a lot longer than the 3 hours because we were the last tour of the day and were having such a lovely time together. Some of the things we got to try on the tour included fruit paste, caramels, baguettes, macaron, and then ended our evening with a 5-course meal at a restaurant with food from the Basque region (foie gras, meat, cheese, entree- where you got to have a choice- and desserts) which is also where we had our 3 glasses of wine. Our group was the only one in the upstairs space and I think that also added to the environment. As someone who has done quite a few food tours, this one was excellent. I'd want to do a tour with Lorca anywhere in Paris! Highly recommend!

I've done two food tours in Paris, one in Montmartre, one in Le Marais - both phenomenal. I loved the intimacy of the Montmartre tour that was about learning about how to buy food like a local from the various small markets, and then we went to a small restaurant and enjoyed all our purchases over lots of wine. And then the Le Marais tour was trying lots of different local spots in Le Marais with a wide variety of delicacies. Both were fantastique! I love Secret Food Tours and always go to them when I visit cities from consistent and delicious experiences!

Stephan was amazing. He even got my picky teen to try new things. We had a great time.

BUYER BEWARE! STAY AWAY! They offered a 10% code which I forgot at booking and messaged 5 minutes after and they wouldn't honor it. Very disappointing. Terrible service. I would not use again.

How a 23-Year-Old From LA Fooled the Internet With an AI Kendrick Lamar Diss Track

Sy The Rapper explains why he made the artificial intelligence Kendrick diss track that went viral, and why he ultimately decided to clarify that it was fake.

Artificial intelligence has become a weapon of mass destruction in the rap war.

A red button was pressed on Monday morning when a diss track from Kendrick Lamar mysteriously surfaced on YouTube , featuring shots at Drake. Or was it? Various members of Drake's OVO crew implied the song was authentic, but it turns out it was actually the work of artificial intelligence, and 23-year-old Sy the Rapper says he’s the mastermind behind it all.

“I thought people were going to know that it was AI,” Sy tells Complex. “Although it did sound real, it sounded like an old version of Kendrick Lamar. It didn't sound like his more up-to-date style, at least in my opinion. The style sounded kind of dated, so I just thought that would be a giveaway, but apparently it wasn't.”

The South Central LA artist had only been playing with AI technology for a year, and after successfully making a Kanye AI song a few months ago, he decided to insert himself in the escalating hip-hop war. “I was going to make a Drake track first,” Sy reveals with a chuckle. “But his track leaked, and I didn't really get around to doing it.”

At this point, it’s hard to believe anything you see on the internet, so when Sy made a TikTok video revealing that he’s behind the AI Kendrick diss, he was understandably met with skepticism. In his initial video, he didn’t show much proof that he actually made the song, and his TikTok page is full of jokes and parody videos, so a lot of people didn’t believe his claims. And as he points out, some fans wanted to believe the track was real because of their allegiances in the rap war. “I think some people are team Drake, so they run with whatever narrative that the Drake team puts out,” he explained. “But I also think that maybe I didn't break it down enough.”

I’ll be honest. Before interviewing Sy, I was skeptical, too. I believed that the song was made with artificial intelligence, but Sy’s initial TikTok video didn’t convince me that he was the one behind it, so I asked for proof. He promptly sent multiple timestamped videos and audio files of him rapping lines from the fake song in his own voice, before then applying AI filters to make it sound like Kendrick. As further evidence, he also sent isolated stems and the grid from the beat that he made. Hearing him rap lyrics from the song, before and after tech alteration, it’s clear that Sy happens to be very good at rapping like Kendrick, plus he has an LA accent, which is part of the reason why his song sounds more convincing than hundreds of other AI Kendrick diss tracks circulating the internet right now.

As a fan of Kendrick, Sy says he tried to put himself in the mindset of the Compton rapper when he wrote the lyrics. “I just had to place myself in Kendrick's shoes, and it didn’t seem like Kendrick would come out swinging for the kill, considering that the [Drake] song was a ‘leaked’ track,” Sy points out, explaining why the song is full of noticeably mild bars. “[Drake’s leaked diss song] didn’t officially drop. So I was thinking more so in the mindset of, ‘If I'm Kendrick, I wouldn't want to show my hand too early, since this song has been leaked and it's not an official drop, so I can't just come out swinging. I’ve got to come out with sort of a warning shot.’”

As artificial intelligence technology improves, fake songs are becoming increasingly prevalent (and believable). At a time of increasing disinformation on the internet, they're also potentially dangerous. AI creators like Sy have received justified criticism for making songs that deceive listeners, and he has no stakes in the beef between Kendrick and Drake, but when he saw people running with the narrative that Kendrick started the AI rumors as a ploy to disavow a weak diss, he decided it was time to come out and reveal that the song was fake. “I really didn't think it would affect anything, but when I saw that narrative, I'm like, ‘Nah, I can't just let that rock,’ because that's just not the truth. That's what made me debunk it.”

Follow me down this wild rabbit hole to better understand how Sy the rapper tricked the rap world into thinking Kendrick Lamar responded to Drake with his AI diss track.

Your social media handle is "Sy the Rapper." What’s your background in rap? I'm from South Central [Los Angeles], so rap is real big where I'm from. I wrote my first rap when I was 10. It was about donuts and Lakers [ Laughs ], and I've just been in love with it ever since.

What’s your background in AI? How did you learn how to use it in the first place? I saw the first case of AI when that guy made a Drake song and people thought it was real. I really thought that was a real song, and it turned out it wasn't real, so I just started researching it, and it's kind of easy to do. With AI, the entry level is very simple, and it's not super complex to use. The complex part comes in how you record because you kind of have to mimic the artist and mimic their voice and cadence, or else it'll do a weird effect that gives away that it's AI. The first time I used it was when I did a Kanye West feature . Of course, I didn't have people believing I really linked up with Kanye. I let it be known that it was AI, and it was more so of a marketing tactic. I posted it on my artist profile, YouTube, and my Instagram, and I was like, “This is how I made the AI Kanye song.” I was amazed at the results.

What’s the name of the AI program you use? The program used to be called Voicify, but now I guess they changed the name to Jammable, but it's the same software.

How long have you listened to Kendrick to be able to replicate his writing style? You had a lot of people fooled. I've been a fan of Kendrick for a very long time. The first time I heard a Kendrick song was in 2013. My friend had a bootleg CD—you know, we in the hood with it—so we didn't have the money to buy the copy. I've never heard anybody rap about the struggle that we come from in a way that he did. A lot of people make gangster rap, but I just was so fascinated how he told the story of the good kid in a mad city, because that was literally me and my friends. I used to mimic Kendrick. He was my initial rap influence. When good kid, m.A.A.d City came out, I was 13.

How did you make the beat? At first, I was going to make a modern trap beat for him to rap on. But when I was making the song, I embodied Kendrick and the mind state he would be in. Placing myself in Kendrick's shoes, it didn’t seem like he would come out swinging for the kill, considering that [Drake’s] song was a “leaked” track. It didn’t officially drop. So I was thinking, “If I'm Kendrick, I wouldn't want to show my hand too early, since this song has been leaked and it's not an official drop, so I can't just come out swinging. So I got to come out with sort of a warning shot.”

That's where my mindset was, so I'm like, “What is the perfect sounding track for a warning shot, but sending off a strong message?” That's where the dark boom bap idea came from. I started with the sirens and the synthesizer. I wanted it to sound like The Purge or ambulance or something like that. I just wanted it to sound real chaotic. Then I built on that idea, and I didn't want there to be too much going on, which is why I didn't add a snare. I just kept it to kick drums and a sub along with some sounds.

How long did it take for you to write the diss track? It took me about an hour or two. I kept stopping to eat, so it would've been quicker [ Laughs ].

How did you record it and replicate his voice? With the Kanye AI [track] that I did, I actually recorded it on my studio mic, but this time I recorded it in my voice memo. The beat wasn't complete yet, so I was just like, “If this doesn't sound real enough, I'm not going to continue with the process.” So I wrote down a few lines and recorded them into my voice memo on my phone.

I had to record the same line over and over, so the recording process really took most of the time because you’ve got to record the same phrase about 12 times. Each time you generate the AI, it [costs]another credit.  I had like 25 credits, and I ended up using pretty much all of them except for one, or else I’d have to pay for more.

Before I would say the phrase, I would say an actual Kendrick Lamar line. So I would say lines from “ELEMENT” just so my voice could be in the same cadence. Before I would say my line, I would go, “Hey, I've been stomped out in front of my mama.” I would say it the exact way he would say it, so therefore my next line would come out sounding like Kendrick Lamar, because it's hard for me to mimic other people, so I had to repeat his cadences from his real songs right before saying the phrases that I wrote down.

After I would record the voice memo, I would have to upload it to the audio trainer, then it generates and your vocal is ready to go with everything you recorded. From there, I would download the AI-generated vocal, cut out the pieces that I liked, and piece it together. Everything is line by line. It's not just one take all the way through.

How long did the entire recording process take? Between recording and generating the vocals, I would say between about maybe 2 or 3 hours.

Why didn’t you include your isolated vocals in the initial video breakdown you posted? People in the comments have been asking for it, because they want more proof that you actually made this. I did record myself making the whole song, but with TikTok and Instagram, they limit your amount of reach based on how long the video is. I rarely see videos that are longer than a minute and 30 actually go viral, at least from my profile. So it was hard to include all of those details if I wanted to make it a minute and 30. I did see a lot of that questioning, and like I said, I wouldn't want to damage Kendrick Lamar's reputation. I hear the narrative being pushed that Kendrick Lamar wanted to test the waters and see if the diss would take, and because a lot of people were saying, “Oh, this wasn't hard enough, he wasn't going at Drake enough, they back backpedaled and said it was AI,” and that I'm on the payroll. They made this whole conspiracy theory.

Did anyone from OVO reach out to you about it? Actually, one of Drake's affiliates reached out to me because he believed that I was lying. I sent him everything. I showed him my AI profile with all of the AI generations that I did. I did everything on Sunday, so the dates lined up. I sent him the voice memos, then I showed him the beat. The copy of the diss track that went viral was on a page called Real Hip Hop , and it got half a million views. They cut out the whole intro segment of the beat, but there’s another copy online that has about 60,000 views, and it's the full copy from start to finish, and you hear my beat tag on it, “It’s SY making hits.” That's my beat tag because my name’s Asad. So on that full copy, that really debunks everything. How would I give my beat to Kendrick Lamar? Even if that wasn't enough, I recorded my computer as I was playing the stems with effects, and then without the effects. So I was showing Drake’s affiliate, like, “Yo, these are all of the stems. This is the kick by itself. I can mute everything except for the kick.” And I was just muting different things, like, “Yo, this is actually the beat that I made, and this is proof that I made the beat, and this is proof that I actually recorded these vocals and plugged them into the AI generator.” [Editor’s note: After the interview, Sy also sent videos of the isolated stems to Complex as proof that he made the song.]

Did anyone from pgLang or TDE find you and reach out to you about this? No. I haven't heard from anybody on that side, but I definitely spoke to an OVO affiliate, and he was actually cool. I thought he was going to be mad. I thought there was going to be a lot going on. But when I sent him the proof, he was like, “Yo, man, since this is true, you are on the same lyrical level as Kendrick Lamar. Respect and keep working.” I just took that as a dope compliment. He was like, “Man, I didn't mean to come at you rude,” but it wasn't rude. I know he was really just trying to get to the facts. I just had to show him that it was legit.

There are conspiracy theories that you’re a sleeper cell for OVO or that someone in Kendrick’s camp paid you off. Those aren’t true? No, I'm not an affiliate of either parties involved.

What were your thoughts when you saw the track go viral and people like Drake reacted to it? It was hilarious to see Drake laugh [at it]. Like, “Yo, he actually heard it.” I thought people were going to know that it was AI. Although it did sound real, it sounded like an old version of Kendrick Lamar. It didn't sound like his more up-to-date style, at least in my opinion. It sounded like “Backseat Freestyle” so 2013. The style sounded kind of dated, so I just thought that would be a giveaway, but apparently it wasn't. Then I saw this narrative coming out like, “Oh, he's scared, he's backpedaling.” So I'm like, “Nah, I'm not going to be responsible for a reputation getting ruined.”

Did you feel any pressure to come forward and say you made it after the internet was running with the narrative that  Kendrick didn’t come hard enough on the fake song? I didn't think it would do much, and I still feel like it won't do much, because it's a leak. If you really look at Drake's track, when it initially leaked, it was the rough draft copy first, and then the full version came out. So there’s a lot of speculation with leak tracks. When something's leaked, it leaves room for speculation. I thought people were going to say, “Oh, maybe he recorded this before Drake’s diss leaked.” Or, “Maybe he wasn't going to put this one out, and he had a gang of diss songs, and this was just one of them that he decided not to put out.” So I really didn't think it would affect anything, but when I saw that narrative, I'm like, “Nah, I can't just let that rock,” because that's just not the truth. That's what made me debunk it.

Since your page is full of comedy skits, with just one AI track you made about Kanye a year ago, why should people believe you? How do we know this isn’t just an elaborate skit that plays into the beef? That Kanye video is super old, but the reason why I pinned it to the top of my profile is to show people like, “Hey, I've actually done an AI before and it sounds legit.” It's just to show people my track record, even though I've only done two AI songs. But this is absolutely not a skit. I do do skits to promote my music, and I do have music on the page, but I know the skits get the most traction right now. But this isn't a skit. It was legit AI, man. I just thought it would be cool to make an AI diss record, ‘cause I’m not the only one that made one. I guess mine was just one of the best ones because it got most of the attention. But you could type in “Kendrick Lamar diss” and there’s so many of them. I've seen so many diss records from both sides. A lot of people think the “Hi, Whitney” track is a legit track. I think that one's fake just from dealing with AI. I hear some of the hiccups in it, but it's a lot of people that believe that's a legit track.

What are the telltale signs and subtle things you notice that are giveaways that they’re fake? A lot of people are scared of AI, rightfully so. I understand where the fear comes from, but AI isn't as advanced as people think that it is. There’s a lot that AI can't do. It still can't mimic cadences. It can't mimic emotions. For instance, if you hear the way Kendrick raps on “FEEL,” towards the end of the song, he starts screaming. But when you try to express any type of emotion in the AI, it's like it can't understand emotion yet, so everything is monotone. You can always tell because the emotion is not there.

I'm a Drake fan, too. I listen to Drake a lot, so I can tell from the pronunciation of some words. If you have a thick accent and you try to do the AI, the accent will show through. It will be a giveaway.

Why do you think people are skeptical about the validity of you making the track, despite breaking it down in your TikTok? I think some people are team Drake, so they run with whatever narrative that the Drake team puts out. But I also think that maybe I didn't break it down enough. I did kind of run through the video because I had to make it a minute and 30 seconds. So it wasn't a super thorough breakdown. But even with the vocals isolated, that's not enough, because you have AI softwares that can break down stems and get an a capella. I feel like the strong supporting case would just be the beat and showing everybody my grid, because on modern producing softwares, when you play something on the keyboard, it has colored notes on the grid that you can actually see. AI doesn't do that, at least to my knowledge.

Since you said you’re a fan of both artists, who do you have winning the war between Dot and Drake? Ah man, I can't say. I would call myself a more neutral spectator, and shouts out to J. Cole, too. I love Cole.

Do you see yourself making anymore AI diss tracks as this battle continues? I think I would probably leave it alone [ Laughs ]. Just seeing everything, man, people are angry about that. I had a dude tell me I'm responsible for the war in Israel. What does that have to do with this? It's crazy. There are some people that like it. It's very split. Some people are like, “Bro, that's dope. That's creative.” Some people are like, “Man, I hate this. I hate you.” I probably would leave it alone. If I did decide to do another one for fun, I would let it be known, like, “Yo, this is AI.” Or I probably would make some mistakes on purpose so people would catch it and know that it's AI.

Are you concerned about the direction that AI is headed? I wouldn't be surprised if maybe somebody was in on it, maybe a higher-up in the music industry. They want to make as much money as possible. So if they can make something that they can absolutely have 100% control over and make money off of it, I do believe they would push for it. Everything is a money game, but I don't see AI replacing the feel of a real human being. I always say that the marketplace is determined by the consumer. You could have a product, but if everybody refuses to buy it, your product won't sell. And as a businessman, it wouldn't be smart to go restock that product that people refuse to buy. So I just feel like if they were able to create a successful AI superstar and the consumers cling to it and love it and embrace multiple of it, then it would get bad. So I guess to know that answer, we would have to really watch the consumer, because that's what determines everything.

As exam season approaches, some parents are putting hundreds of pounds aside to reward their children if they achieve certain grades.

While some parents lambasted the idea as "absolute potatoes", others told Sky News they saw their children's focus increase after offering up to £250 for the top results.

Among them was Sarah Cook, 45, from Dorset, who said cash incentives had improved her eldest daughter's concentration at GCSEs and she promised her youngest, Merryn, the same offer: £100 for a 9, 8 or 7 (A*/A in old money), £50 for a 6 or 5 (B) or £20 for a 4 (C).

"We were definitely all for it and happy to pay up based on achievement. I think it reflects real life as well - if you do well in your job, you tend to get paid more," Ms Cook said.

Merryn, 13, added: "I think it is better for the motivation and for that extra encouragement to get the highest you possibly can and to push yourself more."

Robert Gidney, from Norfolk, said his 14-year-old son's results had improved by a grade since the family decided on reward money: £250 for a grade 9, reduced by £50 for each lower grade, with no reward for grades below 5.

"He seems to be concentrating a lot more on it. He has been studying a lot more and putting a lot more effort in."

He admitted the practice might not be for everyone - something mother of two Sarah Paterson, 57, from Cheshire, would agree with.

"Never in a million years," she said, recalling how her children, now aged 26 and 37, would protest that their friends were being offered cash rewards.

"It's absolute potatoes. What are you setting you kids up for there?

"If they are going to academic, they are going to be academic. Life is about self-motivation."

What the psychologists say

External motivators like money can help children focus in the short term, but they "eventually kill off intrinsic motivation", said Dr Cath Lowther, general secretary of the Association of Educational Psychologists.

She said all children were intrinsically interested in learning, but regular external incentives "erode the engines of motivation" that cause them to find joy in learning or set and achieve their own goals.

It could also cause conflict and jealousy in some schools, with "children in that classroom who can't afford breakfast".

There is already too much pressure on children, said Dr Emma Citron, consultant clinical psychologist and chartered member of the British Psychological Society.

They are already trying to catch up after the pandemic and taking exams that could determine if they get a university place, she said.

"I just think that it's sending all the wrong messages as parents. You're adding to their pressure and actually, more importantly, changing the dynamic between you and your children.

"You're making it conditional on outcome, on reward, rather than what we know to be good, which is unconditional approval and validation."

Parents ought to be "quietly supportive" and act in a pastoral capacity, she said.

Teachers split on the practice

Charlotte, a biology teacher at a private school, who did not wish to give her last name, said approximately 20% of a given year group were offered cash incentives by their parents.

The educator of 30 years said those children often found academia harder, misbehaved or hadn't put in much work before exam season.

"It's not that much fun, revising, it's pretty dull, so I think anything that is an incentive is probably a good thing."

She said her children, now adults, were not offered cash, adding they had dyslexia and dyspraxia.

"They knew that what we required was just for them to do their best," she said.

A 26-year-old teacher at a state school in Reading said she hadn't found cash incentives were common during her four years as a teacher, but she was offered money by her parents when she took exams.

"I think sometimes it could be effective, but it could put more pressure on the pupil and I don't know if it's healthy," said the teacher, who did not wish to be named.

"They are going to feel disappointed if they don't get the grades no matter what."

Dr Lowther said cash incentives spoke to a wider problem with the British schooling system, where external motivators are built in from the start, rather than practices that foster intrinsic motivators like autonomy and connection to others.

From gold stars at reception to narrow choices in the national curriculum, schools focus on extrinsic incentives, she said.

"It would be great if there could be some real thinking about the curriculum and getting science behind how it's developed and how it's implemented," she said.

Each week hundreds of our readers share their thoughts on the things we've been covering in the Money blog.

This week's comments have been dominated by these topics...

  • Our feature on renting your home out to celebrities;
  • Wednesday's inflation announcement;
  • Changes to American Express cards;
  • The prospect of child-free pubs.

We learnt on Wednesday that inflation had eased to 3.2% from 3.4% in March.

Many readers said they felt no difference in their wallets after the announcement, with these two comments summing up the general mood...

It definitely does not feel like inflation is coming down. And isn't that what really matters, especially with elections coming up. These figures will feel like fake news to the majority of people. oellph
We're told inflation had fallen however the prices at the tills still remain unchanged. A pint is sold at £6-7, the weekly shop has reduced somewhat but only slightly, petrol and diesel prices are back on the rise and everyone is struggling to pay their bills and save money. Reggie

Others looked towards the summer's expected interest rate drop...

A double-edged sword here. As interest rates go down, so will the value of sterling. So up go the costs of imports. kinlochdavid

Big money rentals for the stars

We got dozens of comments last weekend from hopeful readers with properties they thought would be perfect for a film set after our feature...

I live in Wales... I have a small two-bed, with a mountain and woods behind. Any good? Marc
I'm happy to let stars use my house for filming Pardeep ahluwalia
I have a beautiful period property full of antique furniture. I don’t live in part of it and a film crew could use it for filming and change it as they wished Margo
How would I go about letting my house out to film crews? Mia Foster

As our feature set out, parking, easy-going neighbours and having one large room for equipment help make your house an attractive prospect for filming.

Much of the industry is based in London but, between them, the three agencies contacted by the Money team for the feature have organised filming in Manchester, Birmingham, the Midlands, the Home Counties and coastal areas.

Others were less keen on the idea...

I wouldn't let them anywhere near my house I've seen the state they leave them in Gary pledger

Child-free pubs

Another talking point this week was whether kids should be allowed into pubs - after one unnamed boozer went viral online for a sign declaring it was "dog friendly" and "child-free".

Lots of social media users were upset by the idea...

But many of our readers agreed:

Kids should NOT be allowed in pubs. It's an adult pass time. If I go for a drink, I expect peace and quiet, not people's brats running riot. Linda
All pubs used to be child-free. What's the problem? Wilco
There should be more child-free pubs, only places like a Beefeater or a Toby Carvery should be allowed children in. We have pubs/working men's clubs in our village where there is nothing for children to do or play with. These types of pubs are not places for children. Claire

American Express changes

From November, the amount BA Amex and BA Amex Premium Plus cardholders will need to spend every year to get "two-for-one" companion vouchers will rise to £15,000.

American Express is also increasing the annual fee for its Amex Premium Plus card from £250 to £300 - an inflation-busting 20% increase.

It's safe to say the change went down badly with some of our readers...

Does anyone really think paying over £600 per year for an American Express Platinum card is good value? They must be absolutely nuts!!!! Big Daddy Smooth
These increases from Amex are outrageous and totally unacceptable. I will be cutting up my card and sending it back. OutragedAmex

A spokesman for Amex said the companion voucher "remains an industry-leading credit card benefit", while both cards "continue to provide great value for customers".

On Wednesday, we found out that inflation has eased to 3.2%  from 3.4% when the Office for National Statistics released the latest data.

Economists had predicted the figure, which covers the month of March, would fall to 3.1%.

It's important to remember that this doesn't mean prices are coming down - they are just rising slower.

All eyes will now turn to decision-makers at the Bank of England as they prepare to consider cutting interests rates next month.

You can read more on that here ...

A day earlier, the ONS released its latest data on wage growth.

Wages excluding bonuses grew by 6% in the three months to the end of February, compared with the same period a year ago.

A Reuters poll of economists had predicted wage growth would slow to 5.8% from 6.1% in November to January.

The figures, while welcome on the face of it for struggling households, made for worrying reading at the Bank of England, which is assessing the timing for a long-awaited interest rate cut in its battle against inflation.

We also got a warning from the RAC and AA after government data showed petrol prices had risen by 8p since the start of the year.

The two companies said the price at the pump could go well above 150p a litre .

During this week alone, the cost has gone up by 1.6p - there has not been a sharper weekly rise since August 2023.

Average pump prices for diesel have also increased to 157.5p, the highest since November 2023.

"With increased tensions in the Middle East, the cost of oil is only likely to go up, which could push petrol well above 150p a litre," RAC fuel price spokesman Simon Williams said.

This was echoed by AA fuel price spokesman Luke Bosdet, who said pump prices were climbing towards the point "drivers fear".

"It is a psychological shock that shouts out from the price boards each time motorists drive past," he said.

Tesla has recalled more than 3,800 of its Cybertruck models following complaints that the accelerator pedal is at risk of getting stuck, US regulators have announced.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had contacted the carmaker, founded and run by Elon Musk, about the issue earlier in the week.

That was after a video came to light, on the billionaire entrepreneur's X platform and TikTok, showing how a rubber cover attached to the accelerator could come loose, pinning the pedal down.

It has since been watched millions of times on both platforms.

Meta's AI has told a Facebook user it has a disabled child that was part of a New York gifted and talented programme.

An anonymous parent posted in a private parenting group, asking for advice on which New York education programme would suit their child.

They described the child as '2e' which stands for twice-exceptional and means they have exceptional ability and also a disability.

"Does anyone here have experience with a '2e' child in any of the NYC G&T [Gifted & Talented] programs?" the user asked.

"Would love to hear your experience, good or bad or anything in between."

Instead of getting a response from another parent, Meta's AI replied.

"I have a child who is also 2e and has been part of the NYC G&T program," it began.

People who are fit to work but do not accept job offers will have their benefits taken away after 12 months, the prime minister has pledged.

Outlining his plans to reform the welfare system if the Conservatives win the next general election, Rishi Sunak said "unemployment support should be a safety net, never a choice" as he promised to "make sure that hard work is always rewarded".

Mr Sunak said his government would be "more ambitious about helping people back to work and more honest about the risk of over-medicalising the everyday challenges and worries of life" by introducing a raft of measures in the next parliament.

Building society reforms - backed by MPs - could help people trying to get on to the property ladder.

The Building Societies Act 1986 (Amendment) Bill is closer to becoming law after its third reading was unopposed in the Commons.

The idea is to expand societies' lending capacity via modernisation.

Tory MP Peter Gibson the bill would help with "cutting red tape" and removing "outdated bureaucratic governance systems not faced by the big banks".

It follows a government consultation which looked at how to allow building societies to "compete on a more level playing field with banks".

The bill is government-backed and Labour is behind it too, saying the changes will support "more working people to become homeowners".

Labour's Julie Elliott, the bill's sponsor, said: "It is important to acknowledge that whilst the housing sector has recovered significantly since the record low mortgage approvals during the COVID pandemic, approvals currently are still below that which we saw before the pandemic.

"That is why I think a bill like this, which gives more choice to the building society sector to operate in the interests of its members, is a good thing."

Treasury minister Gareth Davies offered the government's support and said the bill would help ensure the "future growth and success" of the building society sector.

Labour's shadow Treasury minister Darren Jones said building societies "direct a significant proportion of their lending to first-time buyers" and the bill "could unlock significant additional lending capacity".

The bill will undergo further scrutiny in the House of Lords.

There was a worse than expected performance for retail sales last month, defying predictions of a consumer-led pick up from recession for the UK economy.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported sales volumes were flat in March, following an upwardly revised figure of 0.1% for the previous month.

It said sales at non-food stores helped offset declines at supermarkets.

Sales of fuel rose by 3.2%.

ONS senior statistician Heather Bovill said of the overall picture: "Retail sales registered no growth in March.

"Hardware stores, furniture shops, petrol stations and clothing stores all reported a rise in sales.

"However, these gains were offset by falling food sales and in department stores where retailers say higher prices hit trading.

"Looking at the longer-term picture, across the latest three months retail sales increased after a poor Christmas."

While the performance will not damage the  expected exit from recession  during the first quarter of the year, it suggests that consumers are still carefully managing their spending.

While the  cost of living crisis  - exacerbated by the  Bank of England's interest rate rises  to push  inflation  down - has severely damaged budgets, wage growth has been rising at a faster pace than prices since last summer.

Separate ONS data this week has shown the annual rate of inflation at 3.2% - with wages growing at a rate of 6% when the effects of bonuses are stripped out.

Economists widely believe consumer spending power will win through as the year progresses, despite borrowing costs remaining at elevated levels.

"Misleading" labelling in some supermarkets means shoppers may not know where their food comes from, Which? has said.

Loose cauliflowers, red cabbage, courgettes and onions at Sainsbury's, peppers, melons and mangoes at Asda, and spring onions at Aldi had no visible origin labelling on the shelf or the products themselves, the consumer organisation found during research.

Only 51% of people find origin information on groceries helpful, a survey found.

Two thirds (64%) said they would be more likely to buy a product labelled "British" than one that was not.

Almost three quarters (72%) said it was important to know where fresh meat comes from, while 51% said they wanted to know where processed and tinned meat comes from.

Under current rules, meat, fish, fresh fruit and vegetables, honey and wine should be labelled with the country or place of origin.

"Research has uncovered a surprising amount of inconsistent and misleading food labelling, suggesting that - even when the rules are properly adhered to - consumers aren't getting all the information they want about their food's origin," said Which? retail editor Ele Clark.

"Supermarkets should particularly focus on labelling loose fruit and vegetables more clearly."

An Aldi spokeswoman said: "We understand that our shoppers want to know where the food they buy comes from, and we work hard to ensure that all our labelling complies with the rules.

"When it comes to fresh fruit and veg, we are proud to support British farmers and aim to stock British produce whenever it's available. Customers understand that at this time of year that isn't always possible, but we remain firmly committed to supporting the British farming community."

Asda said: "We have stringent processes in place to ensure country of origin is clearly displayed at the shelf edge and on products themselves where applicable, at all our stores.

"We have reminded our colleagues at this particular store of these processes so that customers are able to clearly see the country of origin."

A spokesman for Iceland said: "At Iceland our products are great quality and value for customers and we follow UK government guidance on food labelling, including country of origin."

A Sainsbury's spokeswoman said: "We have processes in place to make sure country of origin information is clearly displayed on the product or shelf and we carry out regular checks working closely with our regulator, the Animal and Plant Health Agency."

Barclays has been criticised for making the "ludicrous" decision to limit how much cash its customers can deposit in a year.

Ron Delnevo from the Payment Choice Alliance said the move was a "disgrace" and accused the bank of trying to force businesses to stop accepting cash.

From July, the change will mean Barclays customers can only deposit up to £20,000 per calendar year into their personal accounts.

The limit will reset every January.

It comes after Natwest made a similar decision last year, capping deposits to £3,000 a day, or £24,000 in any 12-month period.

"The decision by Barclays is ludicrous. This is plainly an anti-cash move," Mr Delnevo told Sky News.

"It is trying to take free choice from people. It's like it is saying, 'if you are using cash, then we think you are a criminal'.

"It's a disgrace quite frankly and there is no excuse for it. It's just wrong."

Asked if he was concerned other banks could follow suit, he said: "Definitely."

He gave the example of someone selling a car for cash. "How would you deposit the money into your account?" he asked.

Barclays said the change was being made to help it identify "suspicious activity".

"We take financial crime and our responsibility to prevent money laundering seriously," a spokesperson said.

"We have contacted customers to let them know that from July we are making some changes to the amount of cash customers can deposit into their Barclays accounts.

"We have set the limit at an amount that will allow us to better identify suspicious activity, while still ensuring our customers have access to cash."

The UK's estimated 23 million pet owners are at risk of a new kind of scam, one that took nearly £240m in the first six months of last year.

Scammers are now targeting the most vulnerable owners – those who’ve lost their pets.

Fraudsters are turning to lost pet forums and websites to claim they've found missing pets, demanding a ransom payment for their return.

Figures from UK Finance reveal this type of fraud – known as Authorised Push Payment (APP), when a victim is tricked into sending money directly to a criminal’s account - cost British consumers £239.3m in the first six months of 2023.

James Jones, head of consumer affairs at Experian, has some tips on how to avoid the scam...

  • Never pay the ransom – If someone is demanding a large sum of money in exchange for your pet's safe return, call the police immediately. Never pay the money upfront, as it will most likely be a scam. Be sure to take a step back and analyse the situation.
  • Examine the photos - is it a fake? – In an era where the use of artificial intelligence to fabricate photos is becoming increasingly commonplace, spotting a fake is becoming more challenging. But if you do receive a suspicious photo, make sure to take a closer look to determine whether it is in fact your pet. To do this, check if the photo has been taken from your social media profile and reframed to pass as a recent photo. You should also check for any signs of photoshopping. This could be the way the image has been cut, or the lack of shadows. It is also always helpful to get a second opinion – what you might miss, another person could spot.
  • Spotting fabricated stories – Scammers may share specific personality traits you recognise about your pet to convince you they legitimately have it in their possession. However, they may be getting this information from adverts you’ve shared on missing pet websites, or even details shared about your pet on your social media profiles. Be extra cautious and question their authenticity.
  • Be careful not to overshare on social media – While sharing information of pets on social media channels is commonplace, this can make them a goldmine for fraudsters. Always be careful about posting personal details, such as your address, pet’s name, or your location in real time. This is all information a fraudster could use to their benefit. Even if you have a private account, you still need to be cautious, as fraudsters have sophisticated methods for obtaining personal information.
  • Avoid using your pet’s name as your password – The easiest password to remember is your pet’s name, but unfortunately fraudsters know this too. Of course, you need to be able to remember your passwords, but it’s vital not to make them too simple. The ideal password should contain a minimum of 10 characters using a mix of letters, numbers and symbols. As a rule of thumb, it’s also best to ensure you are using muti-factor authentication, when possible.
