Double Take

Let’s eat grandma’s jenny hollingworth and rosa walton on learning to write their stories separately after a lifelong friendship..

Portrait of Justin Curto

Let Rosa Walton make something immediately clear about her and her bandmate, Jenny Hollingworth: “We’re not dating.” “I love how you feel the need to specify that,” Jenny interjects. No, they’re closer than that — the 22- and 23-year-old synth-pop musicians are best friends who’ve been attached since they first bonded in school, over drawing, at age 4. (Usually, they’re mistaken for twins.) That kinship founded the tight collaboration across their first two albums as a two-person band named after a grammar gag . The duo from Norwich, England, couldn’t have arrived at a better time — just as an emotional streak hit synth-pop in the latter half of the 2010s (prompted by albums like Carly Rae Jepsen’s Emotion and Chairlift’s Moth ), their ability to infuse mischief into songs without undercutting poignancy stood out. It also allowed for the Let’s Eat Grandma sound to remain distinctly recognizable even as they branched to outside producers like the late SOPHIE .

Their upcoming third album, Two Ribbons , though, is foreign territory: their first written separately, out of necessity. After releasing I’m All Ears in 2018, Hollingworth spent much of 2019 grieving her boyfriend of over a year, the musician Billy Clayton, who died from cancer that March; simultaneously, Walton was discovering her bisexuality and dating women. For the first time, both as a band and as friends, they had experiences to which the other couldn’t relate. The resulting album is the most intimate document of their friendship, songs that often sound like they’re sung for an audience of one.

Do you recall when music first entered the mix of your friendship? RW: Quite a lot later on. We wrote joke songs when we were 10 for fun, and would make spy movies and attempt to make sweets and dye our clothes with beetroot. Things that kids do.

JH: It wasn’t really intended to become what it’s become. We were really quite atrocious at first. We’ve always had ideas, but have sometimes lacked in execution.

RW: I think that’s one of the things that makes our first album interesting, is the fact that a lot of it’s out of time and that doesn’t always have to be an issue. We’ve become slicker as a band. It’s important to retain that initial freedom and creativity that we had back when we weren’t trying to make an album. We were just writing for ourselves.

On the past two albums before this, what had writing together been like? RW: We used to sit in a room together and literally one person would say a word, and then the other person would come up with an idea off of that word. Even in one line of lyric, it could be really collaborative.

JH: I feel like we would always present each other with ideas very early on and then develop them together. Bits would be done individually, but it would be things to bring to the table.

RW: And we’d jam. There can be some quite good accidental, interesting combinations of notes. You can’t do that by yourself.

Then at one point the two of you drifted apart — JH: [ Coughs. ] Sorry, I’m not — [ Both laugh. ] No, I’m just choking on my feelings.

RW: We were still in each other’s company, but then we also weren’t getting on in other ways.

JH: It’s not like we stopped talking. Emotionally we were going through different things and struggling to process. We just couldn’t really get into the other person’s head as we used to do.

RW: Whenever we’d have a problem before between us we’d sit down and talk about it and understand each other’s points of view. This time, we tried to do that a lot, and it was quite confusing why we couldn’t understand each other.

JH: It shows in some ways that we were pretty young, because you’re at that point where you feel like everything has a real clear, logical answer in life.

RW: The whole point of the song “Ava” was that you can’t always help people or fix something. That could apply to our relationship — sometimes you’ve just got to accept that different things happen to people. You have to live with that.

How did the two of you writing separately on this album come about? JH: I didn’t write for a long time after my boyfriend passed away. So it naturally came about that Rosa was writing on her own for a while, because I think it’s important that she stay creatively busy for her mental health.

RW: At the beginning, I didn’t think that I could write a song by myself. Then I thought that it wasn’t a bad thing to be trying this new way of writing. I know some artists prefer to have a break and live a bit and then write about it, but it’s important for me to be writing constantly.

JH: As the process of us experiencing things differently went on, it didn’t really make sense to intertwine our perspectives on every single song like it used to.

RW: But what we have brought to each other’s songs is great. There’s bits that Jenny’s done on my songs that have elevated it — “Hall of Mirrors” is very much about my experience , and then Jenny came in at the end and did an amazing sax solo and some backing vocals that just lifted the whole thing. And I know, obviously, what you come out with would be much better than — well, I can’t play the saxophone! [ Laughs. ]

JH: Same with “Watching You Go.” Rosa did a lot of guitar on that song at the end. We know what the other person’s good at. We know where they’d be able to fill in a gap that we’re not able to reach — whether that be something as obvious as a solo or a section of the track — and then we’d give each other freedom to write. But the other person would be writing with what you have in mind for the song, and we don’t really try to edit the other very much. We trust each other so that when we give each other the space within our own tracks, whatever you want goes.

lets visit grandma

Do you ever feel nervous to tell the other person if you think something’s not working? How does that go? JH: Often, when you play demos to people outside a band, they’ll be like, “Hmm, I don’t know about that bit.” Whereas if we play each other a demo, we can both hear what the good bit is and what the foundations of the song are. As long as you can both hear it, we’ll both be aware of what needs changing and not even really need to discuss it.

What was it like to see the songs that the other had been working on?JH: [ Laughs. ] Emotional?

JH: Sometimes difficult. Some of the songs felt quite hard-hitting to hear the first time. We definitely had to talk through a lot of them.

RW: The fact that we’ve written so much about each other, I think, says a lot about the amount of love and care we have for each other.

JH: We don’t write songs about people we don’t care about.

It’s really beautiful to hear that the two of you were both independently deciding to write songs about or to the other person. RW: I don’t think we knew that the other person was doing that when we did.

JH: We both just had a lot that was unexpressed towards each other. Songwriting was and is both our ways of doing that.

RW: It’s really useful for making some sense and meaning out of your life. Being able to say things in a way that sometimes words and conversations can’t.

Do each of you have a favorite of the songs that the other wrote? RW: Oh, my favorite of Jenny’s songs is “Two Ribbons.”

JH: “Happy New Year” feels significant in terms of our relationship.

RW: They’re songs that are at least partly about each of us. “Two Ribbons” is probably the saddest song on the record; “Happy New Year” is emotional but in a different way. It’s more like, “We got through this.” It’s the nostalgia in that song that makes it sad.

JH: After you’ve heard “Two Ribbons,” when you hear “Happy New Year” again, it changes what the song means. On “Two Ribbons,” I say, “These places, they stay, but we’re changing.” And then you talk about all the places on “Happy New Year.”

RW: That is quite a running theme in the record: struggling to let go of the past, especially where people and relationships are concerned. And just finding it very sad that things do change.

What do you like most about the other person? RW: The immediate thing that comes to mind is Jenny’s unique worldview, which comes into her creativity, and also how she views things like emotions in quite an insightful way.

JH: Oh, that’s very sweet. For me, it’s your passion. It makes you really, really dedicated to learning the ins and outs of things. You will decide that you want to master something and you will work really hard to get to a really high level. And you’ve also got a fearlessness. When we were starting the band, I’d always be really nervous, and still am with certain things. Rosa throws herself in headfirst.

RW: That’s so nice.

And then the flip side of this is — RW: [ Laughs. ] Are you going to ask what we hate most about each other?

Not necessarily. What’s something that gets on your nerves about the other person? JH: You know what’s weird? My immediate reaction to that was thinking of things that would probably get on Rosa’s nerves about me.

RW: When Jenny drinks the last of my oat milk. [ Laughs. ]

JH: I don’t really know, to be honest. I’m going to say one about me. I think I can be very indecisive, and sometimes not communicate things as clearly as I should probably.

RW: I think I can be pretty indecisive, too! I probably can’t communicate anything either.

JH: It’s interesting, when we were talking about stuff we like about each other … I think I particularly value your creative fearlessness because sometimes I feel like it’s something I often lack.

RW: I feel the same for the things that I said about you. I think I’ve noticed them more because they’re things that I would aspire to for myself. That’s the good thing about friends. They can push you in different directions.

JH: Which is why we work together. I value how you push me. Not push as in, “You’ve got to do this,” but “inspire.” If we’d never been in a band together, I don’t think I would finish things.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learned from the other? JH: It’s very difficult to explain other than to say I would be a completely different person if I’d never met you. When you are really close to people, who they are gets woven into the fabric of who you are as a person.

RW: Sometimes I’ll even do a mannerism or say something and I’ll think that I sound like Jenny.

JH: I do stuff like that as well, actually; I’ll be like, “Having a Rosa moment.” We used to go to restaurants and we’d see old couples sitting next to each other facing the whole restaurant, and they’d have nothing to say to each other over dinner. But there was obviously this feeling of being connected. Sometimes we go to the pub and end up just sitting there, drinking a pint. Usually we run out of stuff to chat about, but there’s just so much here that doesn’t need to be said.

RW: There’s only a select few people that you can just literally sit in silence and it could be really normal.

JH: It makes me think about how grief works as well. Loss has made me see my actual relationships with people differently, because you carry parts of people with you, even when they’re still here. Death has a lot to teach us about living.

Grammar Corner: Lets vs. Let’s

  • By Emily Summers
  • January 22, 2020

In this edition of Grammar Corner, we discuss some of the most widely used grammar errors in the English language. We don’t just correct you, though; we pinpoint exactly why a particular word/phrase/idiom is used incorrectly, while providing the context for each mistake, and then providing the right word/phrase/idiom.

Usually, our articles are centered on homonyms; that is, word pairs that sound exactly the same and spelled very similarly, but with very different meanings. For this edition of grammar corner, however, we’ll be discussing a common issue with newer writers: apostrophes.

In grammar, apostrophes have a couple of functions: it shows when a noun possesses another noun, and it’s used to indicate the omission of letters, like in contractions. Apostrophes, in general, have a set of comprehensive rules in usage, although we won’t be discussing those today. Instead, we’ll be discussing a word that is commonly used but is also commonly used wrong: let’s or lets.

Why the Confusion?

When to use lets, when to use let’s, which one to use: lets or let’s.

The reason for the confusion is a thing in grammar called contractions. Contractions are words that have letters omitted in an attempt to make them more succinct. When this happens, a word is shortened and the omitted letters are replaced by an apostrophe.

This ought to make it simple enough, but as mentioned earlier, apostrophes have their own set of rules of usage, one of which is concerned about the use of apostrophes in converting nouns into possessive nouns. This is why many writers, both new and experienced, make the same mistake of using one word over the other. Despite being spelled the same, lets and let’s are not interchangeable.

The word lets (sans apostrophe) is the 3 rd person singular present tense of the verb let. In its basic form, the word ‘let’ means to allow. This means that Lets is a conjugation of the word let. For example:

“He’s a lot smarter than he lets on”, Sammy said to HR apologetically, as they observe Dave jiggle his belly in the board room again.

This judge lets high-powered officials get off the hook with impunity, so maybe you should target that guy instead of low-level crooks, Batman.

The fact that she lets you use the bathroom when she’s showering should tell you that she loves you, Charles.

We’re in trouble because James lets his bills accumulate without paying them. Now, he has no legs and I’m out twenty grand.

Mel wasn’t the type of person who just lets things go; her vengeance shall be swift, cruel, and righteous, so think twice before dipping your hands in her popcorn again.

The word Let’s (with an apostrophe) is a contraction of the words “let” and “us”. This is used to shorten those two words into a single word. For example:

“ Hold on, Greg, let’s try to fix this guy’s car before going to lunch” Charles said, as they both gazed at the smoldering wreck that was once their client’s car.

“Let’s go!” Jimmy pleaded, “The Gingerbread Man might catch us!” But his friends just shrugged it off, not realizing the shadow of the Gingerbread Man looming over them.

Since we’re stuck in the Grand Canyon, let’s make the best of a bad situation and just try to enjoy ourselves. Now, hand me that bone saw when you’re done, I want to get this broken leg sorted out so I can watch the sunset.

Hey kids, let’s play a game called ‘Do Your Homework or You Don’t Get to Eat Tonight’! Who wants to start?!

If we really had to choose, I say let’s visit grandma first BEFORE going to the asbestos factory.

Always remember: if you’re using the word let as a conjugation, then use Let but leave the apostrophe. If you want to shorten the words “Let” and “Us”, then use let’s with an apostrophe.

About the author

Tammy L. Brown is a whimsical wordsmith hailing from the charming town of Toccoa, Georgia, nestled snugly in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains. While she may have penned the uproarious guide on "How to Train Your Husband," Tammy would like to clarify that she is, in fact, happily married (most days) to a husband who fails to see the humor in that book—a source of endless amusement for her.

In addition to her mischievous marital musings, Tammy also has numerous published books under the pen name TL Brown in the delightful world of children's picture books, where her words and illustrations create enchanting tales for young readers. But don't be fooled; she navigates various genres of fiction and nonfiction with equal aplomb, ensuring that her readers, young and old are always in for a surprise. When she's not conjuring fictional worlds or attempting to train her husband, Tammy can often be found sipping a Diet Coke (with extra ice) and soaking in the beauty of the Georgia countryside.

So, dear reader, while you might take a moment to revel in Tammy's hilarious advice on husband-honing, remember, it's all good fun. After all, what's life without a little laughter, a lot of variety and a dash of marital mischief?

Words. We use them all the time, every day, mostly without giving them much thought at all. We take for granted that they’re here at our disposal whenever we need them. But if you’ve ever wished you could communicate more effectively, words are the place to start. It’s incumbent upon you to choose the best words to accomplish your goals, because how you choose to communicate influences—well, everything! A good simple game about visiting grandma. I was kind of expecting there to be some twist but no. Its a more realistic game about spending some time with your loved ones.

We really wanted to create something kind and gentle, so a twist never even came to mind. Thank you for playing!

Aww this was so sweet and cute, I just wish it was longer!!

Aww thank you for playing!

This was such a cute and sweet game! Grandma was charming. Only problem is I wish I could spend more time with her! And let's face it, that's not really a problem at all. I rate it 10 happy trees out of 10.

Thank you kindly! Appreciate all the happy trees :)

very lovely game I love it, it is a great game.

Thank you so much!

What a lovely game! Though I hope if you ever come out with a new version it includes being able to replace the lightbulb... I felt bad not being able to do that when I could feed the cat and water the plants :c

Thank you so much for playing! We wanted to do more, including replacing the lightbulb, but we ran out of time.

Well for what you were able to complete, it was really put-together! Thank YOU for making the game!

I drew a bulb but there was just no time to implement it! :( but thank you so much!!!

That's understandable, then! And you're super welcome... now I've gotta work on something nice for my own grandma!

Make sure you tell your friends and family you love them. As often as you can. Grandmas are special and need to be shown they're loved. So Please, Visit Grandma! No matter if it's just knitting or playing VR! Grandma's are big into pirate love stories too!

Thank you so much for playing and sharing our game!

Hello Sugar! Thanks for playing our game! I'm glad you feed our Bean and took care of granny til Ash got back :) I agree; lifes too short, call your loved ones.

Conflicts That Can Lead to Grandparent Estrangement

Is Withholding Grandchildren from Grandparents Ever Acceptable?

Deal-breaking behavior, threats to normal access, generational disputes, financial issues, conflicts and mental disorders, breaching boundaries.

When grandparents are unfairly denied contact with their grandchildren , it can be heartbreaking for the grandparents and grandchildren alike. Although suing for visitation rights is a possibility, the most productive approach is resolving family disputes before estrangement is on the table.

Family members have a responsibility to navigate disputes and disagreements before they become an issue. Here is an overview of the most common disputes among parents and grandparents that can lead to withholding contact with grandchildren.

Grandparents have no legal rights to their grandchildren. Whether they see their grandkids is completely up to the parents or legal guardians. Children do benefit from having a relationship with their grandparents and vice versa, but there are times that this benefit might not be worth the cost.

Sometimes parents are right to deny grandparents contact with grandchildren. People who are sex offenders or substance abusers seldom clean up their acts just because they become grandparents. Parents are justified in not wanting their children around grandparents who could endanger children's welfare.

Parents also are justified in denying contact to grandparents who disregard the parents' rules about safety.

For instance, grandparents who transport grandchildren without using the proper car safety restraints, have a history or accidents, or do not drive safely should not be allowed to drive grandchildren anywhere. The same goes for any other safety rule established by the parents, whether the grandparents agree with it or not.

If the infringement is not too great, parents might consider allowing the grandparents to see the grandchildren, but only under controlled conditions. Other actions by grandparents that can easily trigger a family dispute include the following:

  • Undermining parental authority : Encouraging children to disobey parents, or forgetting how hard parenting can be
  • Speaking ill of family members , including parents, stepparents, or other grandparents
  • Refusing to follow parents' rules : Disregarding guidelines for diet, screen time, bedtimes, and so on
  • Giving grandchildren questionable gifts , especially gifts that parents would not approve of
  • Pressuring parents for more contact , such as overnight visits, when parents are reluctant

Families should be able to resolve less serious matters without cutting off contact between grandparents and grandchildren. The ideal approach is to discuss boundaries and behavior and talk about issues as soon as they crop up.

Barring grandparent misconduct, the expectation of the law is that grandparents have access to their grandchildren through the parent who is their child. This is expected to be true both in intact families and in cases where the child's parents are no longer together.

Sometimes, however, the parent who serves as the grandparent's portal to grandchildren also loses contact with the children. This situation can occur for a number of reasons, the most devastating, of course, being the death of the parent. Other complicating situations include:

  • The parents are unmarried and the noncustodial parent has not secured their parental rights.
  • A parent has given up their parental rights.
  • A parent is incarcerated.
  • A parent is barred from seeing the child due to substance abuse, a sexual offense, domestic violence, or something similar.
  • The parent with custody moves a long distance away from the grandparents.
  • The parent who would normally supply access to the grandchildren moves a long distance away.

Another common situation that causes grandparents to be cut off from their grandchildren occurs when the parents struggle with addiction. Parents who misuse drugs or alcohol and deal with addiction often want to keep their habits secret.

If an addiction becomes so severe that it is hard to hide, parents may break contact with the grandparents. The primary motivation is to keep their addiction from being exposed. Such family ruptures can be very ugly and can put grandparents in the unenviable position of suing for visitation rights to try to help their grandchildren.

There are other, less serious conflicts that also can lead to family estrangement . According to psychologist Marsha L. Shelov, three common circumstances that spark disputes between parents and grandparents include:

  • Disagreements over issues such as religion
  • Personality conflicts between grandparents and parents, such as daughter-in-law conflicts
  • Old parent-child conflicts that continue to affect the relationship

These three issues can cause serious family disputes. But, they also can be alleviated if grandparents are extra conciliatory and accommodating.

As difficult as that can be, especially for grandparents who believe that they are right, giving a little is infinitely preferable to losing contact with grandchildren. If the family conflict is especially bitter or involves unresolved issues, family counseling can be helpful as well.

Sometimes family disputes concern money. For instance, grandparents who contribute financially to their children sometimes threaten to cut off financial aid unless certain conditions are met.

Ideally, grandparents who choose to give financial assistance should give it freely and refrain from using money as a means of control—or else they should reconsider the gift.

The exception to this rule is when grandparents agree to pay for private school, college, special lessons, or coaching for their grandchildren. In these circumstances, they have a right to require that their contributions be used as designated.

On the other hand, parents also may use money as a means of control. For instance, they may threaten to withhold contact with the grandchildren unless financial demands are met.

Additionally, parents who have received loans from grandparents may cut off contact to reduce the pressure of repaying the loans. Before making any monetary transactions, both parents and grandparents should consider what types of conflicts they may create down the road.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for both parents and grandparents to sometimes describe the other parties as mentally ill. Common charges are that the other party is a compulsive liar or has a serious mental illness such as bipolar disorder or narcissistic personality disorder.

Sometimes the individuals in question have been diagnosed with a mental illness, and sometimes someone is playing amateur psychiatrist. If a parent or grandparent is truly mentally ill, every effort should be made to obtain help.

On the other hand, leveling such charges against someone just because of a disagreement is both slanderous and counter-productive. It is much better to concentrate on conflict resolution.

Another common reason why parents restrict contact with the grandchildren is caused by boundaries . This type of offense can take the form of violating physical boundaries, such as dropping in on family members and entering without knocking.

It also could include trying to take over parental roles or trying to make decisions for the family like taking away the baby's pacifier.

Sometimes, the boundaries between parenting and grandparenting are blurred. This situation is often seen when young parents need help and grandparents assume parenting roles. Sometimes the grandparents even assume custody ; but more commonly they simply provide child care and often financial assistance.

Then, when the parents decide to reclaim their parenting roles, grandparents sometimes have trouble relinquishing them. Often, the result is that grandparents who have been extremely close to their grandchildren are cut off from them because the parents are desperate to reclaim their parenting turf.

Wise grandparents avoid such rifts by asking for patience as they make the transition. They also do what they can to help the parent resume their responsibilities while relishing the opportunity to enjoy their grandchildren as grandparents rather than bearing the many responsibilities of the parental role.

A Word From Verywell

The key to any healthy relationship is effective communication. Many family disagreements are the result of miscommunication and hurt feelings.

Healing small disagreements and family rifts before they become full-blown breaks is the key to maintaining a positive relationship and maintaining contact with your grandchildren . Be the first to apologize and look for a compromise rather than trying to prove a point.

By doing so, you will help ensure you have a regular presence in your grandchildren's lives and a peaceful relationship with their parents.

Sharing Memories Week 33: Let's Visit Grandma!

3 comments:

Hello, I have been following your Memories topic posts and find the topics useful for me to begin writing down my own. I followed your link to your yearly lists entered on "Sharing Memories" but prompts for the year 2013 are not there. Did you not share memories for that year? If so, are they included in your booklet through Amazon.com? Thank you,

lets visit grandma

Hello! I am very pleased that my prompts have helped you to begin writing your own memories down. I did not share memories in 2013. Due to many requests I started in 2014 but am ending them at the end of August. My Ebook will be the "go-to" spot from now on for those wishing to participate in Sharing Memories. My Ebook on Amazon has some duplicate prompts (that can't be helped as many topics are a must for a sharing memories story!) It also has new prompts. Each prompt in my Ebook has several questions designed to guide you further into pulling up old memories. Hope this helps you decide! Lorine

What great memories, Lorine! These prompts are such a great way for people to reflect and reminisce. Another great tool to utilize in writing memories is music. You'd be shocked at the things you remember when listening to one of your favorite old songs!

35 grandma quotes to honor your favorite lady

Two women's hands, one old and one young.

The mother-child bond is special, but the bond between a grandmother and grandchild? Unbreakable. These grandma quotes are all about honoring that special lady.

When Maria Shriver welcomed her first granddaughter, Lyla, she called her role as a grandma “a blessing.”

“It’s just this whole new joy for me, this whole new relationship for me,”  Shriver told TODAY’s Hoda Kotb in 2021 . “I’m learning to kind of be in it and also be out of it because it’s not my baby.”

In 2018 , Marie Osmond gushed that nothing compares to being a grandma.

“Out of all the awards and accolades that I have been blessed with throughout my life, nothing comes close in comparison with the blessings I receive from being a mother to my eight children and grandma of three. I’ve gotten to experience things with them that I never did,” Osmond said at the time.

And Tina Knowles-Lawson (aka Beyonce’s mom) told  “People”  that being a grandmother is the “second best job in the world.”

It’s safe to say that grandmas love their role — and we love them right back!

  • “And so our mothers and grandmothers have, more often than not anonymously, handed on the creative spark, the seed of the flower they themselves never hoped to see — or like a sealed letter they could not plainly read.” —Alice Walker
  • “I’m made up of the memories of my parents and my grandparents, all my ancestors. They’re in the way I look, in the colour of my hair. And I’m made up of everyone I’ve ever met who’s changed the way I think.” —Terry Pratchett, “A Hat Full of Sky”
  • “As I learned from growing up, you don’t mess with your grandmother.”  — William, Prince of Wales
  • “There’s a Korean word my grandma taught me. It’s called jung. It’s the connection between two people that can’t be severed, even when love turns to hate. You still have those old feelings for them; you can’t ever completely shake them loose of you; you will always have tenderness in your heart for them.” —Jenny Han, “P.S. I Still Love You”
  • “The reason grandparents and grandchildren get along so well is that they have a common enemy.”  — Sam Levenson

How often does a sitting US president visit Tampa Bay? You’d be surprised.

  • Jay Cridlin Times staff

Florida may not be quite the presidential swing state it once was. In the 2020 election, with its electorate shifting gradually to the right, Sunshine State voters went for Donald Trump — only the second time since 1960 that Florida didn’t back the eventual winner.

But one thing you can count on: If it’s a presidential election year, the president will usually make at least one stop in Tampa Bay.

Almost every four years since 2000, the sitting president has visited the region, often on the campaign trail, but occasionally just to talk policy or conduct official business. That trend will continue on Tuesday, when President Joe Biden will make an appearance in Tampa to talk about abortion access in Florida and around the country.

This is a campaign stop, not an official White House visit, meaning it’s not primarily taxpayer-funded. But it is Biden’s second visit to Tampa as president, and approximately the 30th local stop by a sitting president this century. (We’re mostly just counting Hillsborough and Pinellas County visits, though we did include a couple of stops in other nearby counties.) Presidents have also dropped into Tampa Bay before they reached the White House, or after they left. But it’s always a much bigger deal anytime Air Force One touches down.

Here’s a look at Tampa Bay visits from presidents since 2000.

Biden visited Tampa Bay several times as vice president, including once on the eve of the 2016 election , when he appeared at a St. Petersburg rally alongside singer Jimmy Buffett. But he’s only been here once as president, on Feb. 9 of last year , when he spoke about health care at the University of Tampa days after the State of the Union address. He was scheduled to visit in July 2022, but the trip was called off when he tested positive for COVID-19.

Donald Trump

Speaking of COVID-19, one of Trump’s four presidential trips to Tampa Bay came on July 31, 2020, when, following a news conference at Belleair’s Pelican Golf Club, a journalist covering his visit tested positive for the coronavirus. (Trump himself tested negative.) Trump’s first local visit as president was a trip to MacDill Air Force Base in 2017. He later held campaign-style rallies at the Florida State Fairgrounds in 2018 and Raymond James Stadium in October 2020.

Barack Obama

While running for reelection in 2012, Obama spent a lot of time in Tampa Bay, which hosted that year’s Republican National Convention. The Democratic president visited the Tampa Bay area no fewer than five times that year, including three times in September and October. During one of those visits, he stopped by the West Tampa Sandwich Shop for a Cuban and about 45 minutes of politicking. During another, he attended a high-dollar South Tampa fundraiser with celebrity chef Tyler Florence and Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder.

In all, Obama visited Tampa Bay at least eight times as president. In 2010 , he came to the University of Tampa alongside then-Vice President Biden for a discussion on high-speed rail funding. He spent the night here in 2014 , sleeping at a Hilton in downtown Tampa before meeting with military brass at MacDill and popping in for a visit at Tinker Elementary School. And he came once in 2016, after Trump had been elected his successor, speaking at MacDill about his record on terrorism.

George W. Bush

Considering much of his presidency overlapped with his brother Jeb’s stint as Florida’s governor, perhaps it’s no surprise no recent president has spent more time in Tampa Bay than Bush. He came to the area at least 15 times as president — including, famously, on Sept. 11, 2001 , when he was reading to a class of schoolchildren in Sarasota when he learned terrorists had attacked the World Trade Center.

Like Obama, Bush was an active campaigner in Tampa Bay, visiting at least five times between February and October 2004 during his reelection race against John Kerry. During one visit, he campaigned in New Port Richey — one of the few times a sitting president has ever visited Pasco County — and stayed at the Don CeSar Hotel in St. Pete Beach. He also stopped by the University of South Florida in 2002 to stump for Jeb’s reelection campaign.

The Republican president came down so frequently — an average of about twice a year — that it’s hard to keep track of all his travels. In 2001, he helped build an east Tampa home for Habitat for Humanity. In 2006, he took questions from residents in Sun City Center . In 2006, while in town for a fundraiser for then-state Rep. Gus Bilirakis’ first congressional campaign, he stopped by the Buccaneers’ practice facility , signing footballs and talking with players and head coach Jon Gruden. In both 2003 and 2004, he dined at Bern’s Steak House.

He did not, however, come in 2008 to campaign locally for Republican presidential contender John McCain, in part because Bush’s low approval ratings were seen as a negative.

Bill Clinton

Like Bush, Clinton didn’t campaign much for Al Gore during the 2000 presidential race, fearing his impeachment over the Monica Lewinsky scandal might hurt his vice president. But he did appear once that July , speaking at a senior center before headlining a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser for then-Sen. Bill Nelson.

Federal officials investigating cockpit visit by Rockies coach during United flight

DENVER (AP) — Federal transportation officials are investigating an unauthorized inflight cockpit visit by a coach for the Colorado Rockies during a United Airlines charter flight last week from Denver to Toronto.

Video surfaced this week that appears to show Rockies hitting coach Hensley Meulens sitting in a pilot’s seat while the April 10 flight was at cruising altitude. It is against federal regulations for unauthorized people to be on the flight deck.

He can be seen and heard on the video joking with other people in the cockpit — including a person in a pilot’s uniform and at least one other person who does not appear to be an airline employee — and says the plane is at 35,000 feet (10,670 meters).

“Flying the plane, here to Toronto,” Meulens says as he gestures toward the person in uniform sitting next to him.

“I’m going to land the plane tonight. So relax,” he says. He then reaches toward the flight controls and pretends to take hold, saying, “I just press this button ... and it goes down.”

Meulens posted the video on social media and later deleted it, but it had already gone viral and was reposted , The Denver Post reported. He was not available for comment in the Rockies’ clubhouse on Friday, but manager Bud Black said Meulens was contrite and his job was not in jeopardy.

(AP Photo/Patrick Semansky, File)

“Bam-Bam, he apologized,” Black said. “I can’t comment really any further because of what is being called an investigation of the matter. As far as Bam-Bam goes, he apologized to the Rockies, apologized to United, apologized to the team.”

United has suffered a series of problems in recent weeks including a piece of aluminum skin falling off a plane, a tire dropping off another during takeoff, and an engine fire . The Federal Aviation Administration has stepped up its oversight of the carrier, and the airline’s CEO has sought to reassure travelers the airline is safe.

A United spokesperson said the airline was conducting its own investigation of the April 10 flight. The airline said the cockpit visit was “a clear violation of our safety and operational policies” and was reported to the Federal Aviation Administration.

“We’re deeply disturbed by what we see in that video, which appears to show an unauthorized person in the flight deck at cruise altitude while the autopilot was engaged,” United spokesperson Russell Carlton said.

The pilots on the flight have been withheld from service while the airline investigates, Carlton said.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Chris Mullooly said the agency was investigating but provided no further details because it’s an open investigation.

“Federal regulations restrict flight deck access to specific individuals,” he said.

The cockpit visit was earlier reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Major League Baseball said it was aware and monitoring the Federal Aviation Administration probe.

Morning Rundown: Student protest arrests across the country, mom says ex-cop 'brainwashed' teen girlfriend before double killing, Venice tries to deter day-trippers

Tennessee legislators pass bill that would let teachers carry guns in schools

Lawmakers in Tennessee passed a measure Tuesday that would allow school staff to carry concealed handguns on school grounds, sending the bill to the governor a year after a shooter opened fire and killed six people at a Nashville school.

The Tennessee House cleared the legislation in a 68-28 vote . Four Republicans joined Democrats in opposing the measure.   The state Senate, which is also controlled by the GOP, passed the measure earlier this month.

Republican state Rep. Ryan Williams on Tuesday said the bill would bolster school safety.

"I believe that this is a method by which we can do that, because what you're doing is you're creating a deterrent," he said on the House floor.

Under the legislation, faculty and staff members who wish to carry a concealed handgun on school grounds would need to complete a minimum of 40 hours of approved training specific to school policing each year.

Protesters could be heard in the gallery on Tuesday chanting, “Blood on your hands,” during the floor proceedings.

People protest bill allowing armed teachers in Tennessee.

Democratic state Rep. Bo Mitchell pushed back on the measure, referring to last year's Covenant School shooting in Nashville when three children and three adults were killed.

"This is what we’re going to do. This is our reaction to teachers and children being murdered in a school, our reaction is gonna throw more guns at it. What’s wrong with us?" Mitchell said on the House floor.

State Sen. Paul Bailey, a Republican who sponsored the bill in the upper chamber, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Republican Gov. Bill Lee did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether he planned to sign the measure. He can either sign the bill or allow it to become law without his signature. Lee has not vetoed any legislation as governor.

Tennessee isn’t the only state to approve legislation allowing teachers to carry guns. According to the Giffords Law Center , a gun violence prevention group, at least 26 states have laws permitting teachers or other school employees to possess guns on school grounds, with some exceptions.

Netanyahu Says Israel Won’t Be Pressured Over Iran Response

Top diplomats from Germany and Britain traveled to Jerusalem to urge Israel not to respond in a way that risked a wider regional conflict.

Annalena Baerbock, Isaac Herzog and David Cameron arrive for a meeting at a hotel in Jerusalem.

By Matthew Mpoke Bigg

  • April 17, 2024

For days, Israel’s closest Western allies have pleaded with the country’s wartime government not to risk igniting a wider war by responding too strongly to Iran’s barrage of missiles and drones last weekend. And on Wednesday, the top diplomats from Germany and Britain delivered that message in person to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem.

But Mr. Netanyahu emerged from those talks resolute that his country would not bow to any outside pressure when choosing its response. He declared before a cabinet meeting that Israel would “do everything necessary to defend itself” and warned the allies that “we will make our own decisions,” according to his office.

The British foreign secretary, David Cameron, acknowledged just before meeting with the prime minister that Israel was unlikely to heed pleas to turn the other cheek.

“It is clear that the Israelis are making a decision to act,” Mr. Cameron told the BBC. “We hope that they do so in a way that does as little to escalate this as possible.”

The United States, Britain and Germany have been urging Israel to avoid making moves that could increase tension with Iran, which launched around 300 missiles and drones on Saturday night in what was believed to be its first direct attack on Israel. Most of the missiles and drones were shot down before they reached their targets — thanks in part to the assistance of the United States, Britain, France and Jordan — and the ones that got through did minimal damage.

Mr. Netanyahu thanked Israel’s allies for their “support in words and support in actions” in remarks before a cabinet meeting, according to his office. But he added: “They also have all kinds of suggestions and advice. I appreciate it, but I want to make it clear — we will make our own decisions.”

Iran warned that it would react forcefully to any Israeli aggression, with the army’s commander in chief, Maj. Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi, saying on Wednesday: “We will respond with more deadly weapons.”

Israel’s war cabinet has met several times since the weekend with no apparent decision on when and how to strike back against the attack. Officials are said to be considering a range of options , from a direct strike on Iran to a cyberattack or targeted assassinations, trying to send a clear message to Iran while not sparking a major escalation.

“Israel will respond when it sees fit,” an Israeli official said on Wednesday, adding that it had “multiple ways” to do so. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The president of the European Council, Charles Michel, announced early Thursday that new European sanctions would be imposed on Iran’s drone and missile programs as punishment for last weekend’s attacks.

“It’s a clear signal that we want to send,” Mr. Michel said, emerging after midnight from a meeting of leaders of the European Union’s member states in Brussels. “We need to isolate Iran.” He said more details about the new sanctions would be announced in the coming days.

Our Coverage of the Israel-Hamas War

News and Analysis

The United Nations’ human rights office called for an independent investigation into two mass graves  found after Israeli forces withdrew from hospitals in Gaza, including one discovered days ago over which Israeli and Palestinian authorities offered differing accounts.

After weeks of delays, negotiations and distractions, Israel appeared to hint that its assault of Rafah  — a city teeming with more than a million displaced persons above ground and riddled with Hamas tunnels below — was all but inevitable. Here’s how it might unfold .

Germany said that it would resume funding  for the main U.N. agency aiding Palestinians in Gaza, known as UNRWA, after an independent review found that Israel had not provided evidence  of an allegation that led many donor nations to withdraw support.

The United Nations says famine is likely to set in by May in Gaza. For those living under Israel’s attacks and a crippling blockade, every day is a race against time. Here’s how two Palestinian families  try to keep their children alive.

A Generational Clash on Seder: At Passover Seders, many families addressed the war in Gaza , leading to rising tensions, while 200 New Yorkers from pro-Palestinian Jewish groups were arrested after rallying  near Chuck Schumer’s home to protest aid to Israel.

PEN America’s Fallout: The free expression group PEN America has canceled its 2024 literary awards ceremony following months of escalating protests over the organization’s response to the war in Gaza , which has been criticized as overly sympathetic to Israel.

Fears Over Iran Buoy Netanyahu: The Israeli prime minister lost considerable support after the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attacks on Israel. Tensions with Iran have helped him claw  some of it back.

A Surprising Rift: The Israel-Hamas war, which has roiled cultural and political institutions far beyond the Middle East, is causing divisions in a prominent Japanese American group .

iOS 18 Rumored to Add These 10 New Features to Your iPhone

Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on June 10 , so the software update is a little over six weeks away from being announced. Below, we recap rumored features and changes planned for the iPhone with iOS 18.

iOS 18 Siri Integrated Feature

  • Smarter Siri: iOS 18 is rumored to include new generative AI features for Siri, Spotlight, Shortcuts, Apple Music, Messages, Health, Keynote, Numbers, Pages, and more. These features are expected to be powered by Apple's on-device large language model (LLM) , but Apple has reportedly also discussed partnerships with companies like Google, OpenAI, and Baidu .
  • More Customizable Home Screen: One of the design changes rumored for iOS 18 is a more customizable Home Screen , including the ability to place app icons anywhere on the Home Screen grid . This change will allow for blank spaces, rows, and columns between app icons.
  • Improved Texting With Android Users: Apple announced that it will support the cross-platform messaging standard RCS in the Messages app on the iPhone starting "later" in 2024, so it will likely be an iOS 18 feature. Compared to SMS, RCS support will improve the texting experience between iOS and Android devices by allowing for higher-resolution photos and videos, audio messages, typing indicators, read receipts, Wi-Fi messaging, and more.
  • Calculator Revamp: iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 are expected to feature a revamped Calculator app with several new features , including a sidebar that lists recent calculations, an improved interface for converting units, integration with the Notes app, and more. Yes, this means that Apple will finally be making its Calculator app available on the iPad .
  • Math in Notes App: With iOS 18, the Notes app is expected to gain support for displaying mathematical notation , allowing users to include more types of algebraic equations and formulas in notes.
  • Custom Routes in Apple Maps: At least two new Apple Maps features are expected on iOS 18, including custom routes and topographic maps . Custom routes would allow users to choose specific roads to travel on while navigating, while topographic maps include details such as trails, contour lines, elevation, and points of interest for hiking and other outdoor uses. Apple already introduced topographic maps on the Apple Watch with watchOS 10.
  • Safari Browsing Assistant: Another new generative AI feature potentially coming with iOS 18 is a browsing assistant in Safari , but no specific details are known yet. There are already multiple iPhone web browsers with AI tools, such as Microsoft Edge and its GPT-4-powered Copilot, and Arc Search , which can summarize web pages to provide concise information.
  • AirPods Pro as Hearing Aid: iOS 18 will reportedly include a so-called "hearing aid mode" for AirPods Pro , but it is unclear how it would differ from Apple's existing Conversation Boost feature that launched in 2021.
  • Next-Generation CarPlay: Apple's website says the first vehicles with next-generation CarPlay will arrive in 2024 , so the platform might debut alongside iOS 18 later this year. However, it is possible that next-generation CarPlay will also be compatible with some iOS 17 versions.
  • Freeform Scenes: iOS 18 is rumored to add a new "Scenes" option to Apple's drawing app Freeform . This feature would allow users to select specific sections or "scenes" on the canvas for easier navigation.

For additional rumors and expectations, read our comprehensive iOS 18 roundup , which we routinely update with the latest information.
