With TONS of open-air activities, spacious hotels and beaches, outdoor dining, and a retro-chic, colorful, uniquely Miami vibe everywhere you look, a few days in Miami will be just what the doctor ordered.

Whether you’re traveling to Miami as a couple, as a family, with a group of friends, or for a Miami bachelorette party , you’re going to LOVE exploring Florida’s sunniest city.

lifestyle travel miami

So what do you do when you get there? What are the best places to stay in Miami? What are the best things to do in Miami? And what are the best restaurants and bars in Miami Beach? I’ve got you covered.

Here is the Ultimate Jetset Guide to Miami, Florida

Table of Contents

Where to stay in Miami

1 hotel south beach.

My #1 pick of where to stay in Miami would be 1 Hotel South Beach ! It’s super chic, and has the best rooftop in all of Miami. Perfect for a girls’ getaway, a couples trip, or anyone, really.

lifestyle travel miami

Miami Beach EDITION hotel

I love this boutique luxury hotel in Miami Beach. A bowling alley, an ice rink, a nightclub, and fitness center are all onsite at The EDITION. Bars and cabanas are offered poolside, and there’s even an outdoor movie theater!

lifestyle travel miami

Delano South Beach

Access to the pool is available with a cabana rental, or head to Delano Beach Club after 7 p.m. for craft cocktails and night swimming.

A super fun Greek restaurant that has all-you-can-drink options for groups! We LOVED our dinner here. The food was AMAZING and our table was so cute. This dinner was a huge highlight of my bachelorette weekend in Miami .

Call Me Gaby

This modern Italian gem has the perfect charming outdoor patio for a dinner outside in Miami.

lifestyle travel miami

Joe’s Stone Crab

The iconic Joe’s Stone Crab is a must-do for a first trip to Miami. Joe’s does not accept reservations, and during the prime time of the year it moves over a thousand customers a night through its beautiful Spanish-villa-style restaurant. If waiting in line scares you but you still want to experience Joe’s – it’s easier to snag a seat at lunch (in service mid-October to mid-May).

Smith and Wollensky

Another Miami staple, the Smith and Wollensky steakhouse sits on the Miami skyline with an oceanfront outdoor patio and bar, two floors of restaurant seating and an upstairs deck featuring bar, lounge and table seating, all with views of the water. S&W also has one of the best wine lists in Miami. So if wine is your thing, you need to go here.

For some of the best pasta and upscale Italian you’ll ever have, check out Upland – a trendy, modern restaurant with an awesome atmosphere and even better food.

Bodega .

Bodega is a casual taqueria that has a speakeasy behind it! It’s not the most ideal for a LARGE group because their seating is more tables of 6 (so we had them cater instead), but their tacos are delish. Also if you’re in Miami on a thursday night definitely head to Bodega’s speakeasy bar – which goes off on Thursday nights.

lifestyle travel miami

Photo via Digest Miami

If you’re looking for a casual take-out lunch or delivery to your Miami hotel or airbnb, this place is AMAZING. They deliver, and it is SO dang good – think tuna poke bowls, ceasar wraps, salads, and anything and everything healthy and delicious. I crave their chicken cesar wrap ALL the time. We loved it so much we ordered it like four times on my bachelorette party in Miami .

lifestyle travel miami

Byblos Miami

The super trendy Byblos is mediterranean inspired, and feels a little like you’re in a Turkish tea house. The food is AMAZING, and the vibe is great, day or night. The 200-seat restaurant was designed by the same people behind places like the Alibi Cocktail Lounge at Aria Resort & Casino and 1OAK Las Vegas at Mirage Hotel & Casino, so you can expect a modern upscale atmosphere, with really great, creative food.

Mila Rooftop

The best MediterrAsian cuisine rooftop with super chic vibes. A great spot for dinner or Sunday Brunch!

What to do in Miami

Renting a boat in miami for the day.

If a yacht experience in Miami is what you’re after, check out this one here, up to 6 people. Or check out this awesome catamaran here. If you’re looking for more a day speedboat cruise around the bay, this is a great one too.

Check out the Wynwood Walls

Just a few minutes from Downtown Miami, or across the bridge from South Beach, near the Miami Design District, Wynwood is a trendy, hip neighborhood centered around the Wynwood Walls –  a collection of giant walls famed for the art by famous street artists from across the globe. It’s a beautiful tribute to Miami’s unique culture, and, of course, is also super instagrammey.

If you want to do a tour of the walls – and then hit up a brewery – check out this airbnb experience here!

Sugar, Brickell

Sugar is a Brickell neighborhood hotspot that usually has a line out the door on weekend nights & Friday happy hour. The rooftop features 360-views of the city, 40 floors up! and pricey (but delish) cocktails and a swanky, upscale crowd. Snag a reservation for a guaranteed table for your group.

Where to go out in South Beach, Miami

The uber-trendy retro neon club, located in the Basement of the Miami Beach EDITION hotel , is only open on Friday and Saturdays, but you can bowl or ice skate any night of the week.

Adjacent to the nightclub (which is more of a funky dance club meets neon bar feel than a traditional CLUB feel like LIV, Story and Eleven) is a four-lane bowling alley with oversize LED screen displays and fun lighting. Wear your best South Beach neon outfit (take a look at this blog post for inspo ) and book a couple lanes for you and your group, get bottle service, or hit up the bar behind the bowling alley, and then head to the club after.

Bodega – a speakeasy behind a taco shop that goes OFF on Thursday nights.

Enter through the graffiti-d bathroom to the hottest party on Thursday nights. More of a bar scene than a club scene. Highly recommend.

What to Pack for a Trip to Miami

Miami is the land of COLOR – so pack your chicest colorful outfits, and, of course, a tie-dye bikini .

The weather will be hot year round (you’ll very very rarely need a jacket), with the most humid months being in the Summer. So break out your best bikinis , cover ups, and colorful neon dresses for nighttime.

Guardian reporter Richard Luscombe at the News Cafe in Miami Beach, Florida.

A local’s guide to Miami: What to eat, see and do in three days

The best spots for shopping, sightseeing and exploring the art deco facades of South Beach – plus an Everglades excursion (and ‘gator bites’ snack)

S ure, you can come to Miami just to look at it. There’s plenty of eye candy, from the art deco facades of South Beach to the colorful murals of Wynwood and the natural beauty of the Florida Everglades. And how could we forget the travel brochure-blue warm waters of the Atlantic.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from two decades living in what locals call the Magic City, it’s that Miami is a place that needs to be lived in. It wants to be heard. It craves to be experienced. Thanks to the Latin American culture and cuisine that courses through its veins, Miami pulses with a vibrancy like no other city in North America.

Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl won’t affect your enjoyment – there’s plenty for all. What really matters is that you’re open to soaking in the vibe, ready for your senses to be stoked and your mood to be mellowed. Without further ado, my itinerary for friends and strangers alike.

Day 1: Dominoes and downtown

A giant-sized rooster in the colors of the Cuban flag on Calle Ocho in Miami’s Little Havana.

We’re starting our day with a stroll through the Cuban neighborhood of Little Havana, along Calle Ocho. This is where the first refugees from Fidel Castro’s 1959 communist revolution in Cuba made their home. We’ll grab a breakfast pastelito (a sweet or savory Cuban puff pastry) and a cafecito (espresso coffee) from a street kiosk as we amble towards Máximo Gómez Park , where we’ll find elderly Cuban exiles engaged in friendly banter over a game or three of dominoes. For lunch, there’s nothing to beat a roasted pork, cheese and pickle Cuban sandwich from the iconic Cafe Versailles .

The newly gentrified Wynwood district, about 15 miles north of downtown, is on tap for the afternoon. Until recently, the area was a sprawl of rundown warehouses. Investment in the strongly Puerto Rican neighborhood has sparked a transformation into a corner of Miami where craft breweries, fashion houses, art galleries and dance halls abound. At its heart is Wynwood Walls , billed as Miami’s original street art museum, with a plethora of giant murals painted by world-famous artists.

Murals in the Wynwood neighborhood in Miami.

But we’re saving some money for shopping at the waterfront Bayside Marketplace , and a sunset cruise to millionaire’s row aboard the Island Queen. We might not share the wealth of Miami’s celebrated glitterati, but we can lord it above them with panoramic views of the city from the Skyviews ferris wheel , before cocktails and supper with live entertainment at Pier 5, Bayside’s new live music venue.

Brickell, Miami’s financial center, on the Biscayne Bay.

Day 2: Outdoor yoga and opulent architecture

We partied hard and late, so we’re recharging this morning with some outdoor yoga on the scenic grounds of one of Miami’s most magnificent and historic buildings, the Vizcaya mansion . More than a century old, the Mediterranean revival-style building and its beautiful gardens were crafted for James Deering, an agricultural visionary whose descendants sold the estate to Miami-Dade county in the 1950s.

The Fairchild tropical botanic garden in Coral Gables, Florida.

As beautiful as Vizcaya’s gardens are, they can’t hold a torch to the majesty of the nearby Fairchild tropical botanic garden in Coral Gables, where we’re walking this afternoon. A full 83 acres of tropical lushness, nowhere else in the city showcases its range of flora and fauna, and with special events most weekends from chocolate celebrations to mango festivals, chances are you’ll find something to nourish your roots.

It was only a matter of time. We’re finally heading for South Beach. It’s the art deco capital of the world, and you can bag an educational walking tour with the knowledgeable guides from the Miami Design Preservation League.

Afterwards, you’ll find us people-watching at the News Cafe , one of the best street-side eateries on Ocean Drive, where the clientele is as diverse and eclectic as its location. A plate of truffle fries makes for tasty light pickings, or grab some mahi-mahi tacos if you’re hungry.

The art deco district in Miami Beach.

If you’re wondering where we’re staying, you’ll find us at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, a national historic landmark dating to 1926, where the opulent grand pool was a favorite of numerous Hollywood movie stars of the mid-20th century, alongside quintessential personifications of American wealth such as the Roosevelts and Vanderbilts.

Day 3: Taste of the wetlands

You’ve seen airboats skimming the swamps of the Florida Everglades in the opening credits of CSI Miami . Today we’re going out searching for alligators. It’s a short drive west along US41 to where multiple airboat operators ply their trade, with Coopertown proclaiming itself the original. It’s Florida’s smallest town, with a population of eight, but it’s large in hospitality, and Coopertown Airboats’ fleet of seven vessels will take groups small and large on a quest for critters deep into the wetlands.

The Coopertown Everglades airboat tour.

Yes, it can get cheesy. They’ll try to sell you a photo with a baby alligator, and you can chow down on “gator bites”, nuggets of alligator tail, when you’re back on dry land. But there’s no more signature experience or more fitting way to mark a short stay in Miami than venturing into the wilderness known as one of the world’s last wild frontiers.

And with that, you’ll be leaving the Magic City with tired feet, a host of rich memories and a yearning to see much more. You’ll be coming back for another look before long.

Richard Luscombe is a general assignment reporter for the Guardian US, based in Miami. A certified python trapper (with zero catches to his name), he enjoys spending time in the Florida Everglades and watching big space rockets launch from Cape Canaveral

The Vogue Editors’ Guide to Miami

By Elise Taylor

miami

We may earn a commission if you buy something from any affiliate links on our site.

As the temperature drops, there’s one destination that always beckons: Miami, Florida. With its crystalline waters, art deco architecture, and lively atmosphere, it’s America’s perennial warm-weather getaway.

But with so much to explore and choose between— do I stay in Miami Beach, or the Design District? Do I want a cultural experience or, erm, a club experience ?—journeying to the urban oasis can be overwhelming. So we asked Vogue staffers to share their favorite haunts in Miami, from hotels to restaurants to nightlife. Below, our recommendations—and what to wear while you're visiting them.

Where to Stay

The Faena

Faena, Miami Beach

When in Miami, I like to lean into its excessive, chaotic glamour—which means the Faena , a maximalist fever dream, is my hotel of choice. The bold red and turquoise color scheme in all the rooms? 100 percent yes. Animal print coaches with gilded chandeliers in the lobby? Here for it . Plus, it’s an art lover’s paradise: Damian Hirst’s “Gone but not Forgotten,” a gold-leafed wooly mammoth skeleton, sits on its grounds, and during Art Basel, they always have an avant-garde installation. (Last year? A carousel by Raúl de Nieves.)

-Elise Taylor, Living Writer

Miami Edition, Miami Beach

When it comes to Miami hotels, understated elegance can be hard to come by. Though the razzle-dazzle of nearby properties is certainly fun, my all-time favorite hotel is the Edition . You’re smack dab in the middle of where you want to be (Collins Avenue and 29th Street) so you still feel very much a part of the Miami scene but inside, you’re miles away from it all. An all-white and blonde wood interiors scheme induces calm and that signature Edition smell that welcomes you upon arrival really transports you to vacation mode instantly. The views of the water are incredible and so too are the dining options like Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Matador Room.

-Lilah Ramzi, Commerce Editor

Goodtime Hotel, Miami Beach

Ken Fulk swathed South Beach’s Goodtime Hotel in maximalist, Miami glamour: think a pool deck with baby pink cabanas, bars adorned with teal walls and art deco furniture, and greenery so dynamically dense that it feels like you’re in a jungle. (“Being in there is like being in a Wes Anderson film,” its co-owner, Pharrell Williams, previously told Vogue of his hospitality project in collaboration with David Grutman. )

-Ian Malone, Experiences Editor

Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, Surfside

The Four Seasons recently took over Miami's famed beachside Surf Club . The rooms are as pristine as you'd expect, and then there's the hammam-themed spa with modern Morrocan tilework. Yes, the hotel is far away from Miami's more frequented attractions, but you'll want for nothing.

East, Brickell

Who says you need a beach? Located in Miami’s booming Brickell neighborhood is East , the first U.S. outpost of Swire Hotels—the group behind the endlessly cool Middle House in Shanghai. Modern design is at the forefront for this downtown property: the glass prism exterior is meant to look like cascading water, and feng shui methods were used for all the interiors. Their rooftop bar, Sugar, with its teak bar and overflowing greenery, looks straight out of Bali—but its panoramic views of Biscayne Bay gives its true geographical location away.

The Surf Club Restaurant, Surfside

If the trends of Miami have you longing for another time, look no further than The Surf Club Restaurant. Thomas Keller’s first Florida joint will transport you to the glitz and glamour of the 1950s. The meal begins with a thematically-appropriate selection of Champagne (I chose a vintage preferred by Winston Churchill, naturally). Lean into the restaurant’s pitch-perfect classics: deviled eggs, Caesar salad prepared tableside, steak au poivre. Finish it off with a hot fudge sundae, also prepared tableside—or a stiff martini. Either way, Don Draper would be proud.

-Jessie Heyman, Executive Editor

Byblos, Miami Beach

Byblos ’s airy and bright atmosphere sets the tone for the Mediterranean delights that await. This is the perfect spot for a happy hour drink (the “Marrakech Garden” delights), brunch (the manoushi never fails), or even a family feast (the “no hungry kids” menu comes in handy!).

-Ian Malone

Cecconi's, Miami Beach

You can’t go wrong with an evening at Cecconi’s , Soho Beach House’s Venetian-inspired restaurant set in a bright and airy garden courtyard. Designed by Ward and Gray, handblown glass lanterns hung from pergolas, olive trees are adorned with sparking white lights, and blue-and-white sofas line marble tables. Order the lobster spaghetti and stay awhile.

Casa Tua, Miami Beach

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more romantic spot in South Beach than Casa Tua (the lantern-lit trattoria practically screams engagement spot). The Northern Italian restaurant—which feels more Montepulciano than Miami—offers an impressive wine list and traditional Tuscan fare: stracciatella, truffle risotto, ragu bolognese. Just make sure you save room for the homemade pistachio gelato.

-Jessie Heyman

Mandolin Aegean Bistro, Design District

Mandolin is a true Mediterranean escape in the heart of Miami's Design District. If you’re seeking a laid-back, unpretentious environment with great seafood and wine, grab a table on their patio.

-Madeline Fass

The Drexel, Miami Beach

I just made a reservation at The Drexel, the second Miami restaurant from the famed team behind Mandolin. Here, the emphasis is on clean flavors, with a charcoal grill and wood oven producing wild prawns, smoked guanciale pizza, and roasted eggplant. Go for dinner, or for their 10 dollar wine happy hour.

Joe's Stone Crab, Miami Beach

There's always a line because Joe’s Stone Crab is a bonafide institution. Joe's founder Joe Weiss is actually said to have "discovered" stone crabs. He and his wife opened a lunch stand in Miami Beach in 1913. In 1921, a visiting ichthyologist from Harvard brought him a stack of the strange looking crustaceans. At first, Joe thought nobody would eat them, but after he boiled and chilled them, they were a huge hit. The signature claws are a must-order. Fresh stone crabs are in season from October 15th to May 15th. But the huge menu means there are lots of other seafood options as well. (The restaurant does so much business it's actually the number two highest-grossing restaurant in the United States. The number one spot goes to Tao Las Vegas.) And, after eating all of the claws you can, be sure to order the key lime pie—you won't regret it.

-Alexandra Macon, Contributing Living Editor

The Key Club

Whether you’re in the mood for chips and caviar or a lobster roll, The Key Club is Coconut Grove’s newest hot spot for brunch with the ladies, afternoon cocktails, or a buzzy dinner with friends. The mid-century Brazilian-inspired aesthetic breathes a welcoming ambiance and warm energy into the expansive 6,700 square feet space.

-Elisee Browchuk, Experiences Manager

Los Fuegos, Miami Beach

The best steak I ever had was at Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann—the Argentinian celebrity chef is a true grillmaster. The ambience, with its cheetah print banquets, mood lighting, and outdoor terrace truly sets the mood for a special evening worth savoring.

Taquiza, Miami Beach

This traditional Mexican taqueria is definitely a local’s spot. Specializing in authentic tacos and street fare, it's a casual place where you can eat good food al fresco. Blue masa is used to create their homemade gluten-free tortillas and chips, and to be honest, my trip to Miami was almost a year ago, and I still think about how good they were on a regular basis!

-Alexandra Macon

1-800-Lucky, Wynwood

If you're wandering around Wynwood, 1-800-Lucky is the ultimate casual lunch spot that's not to be missed between gallery hopping and shopping. In an industrial setting with a ton of Asian food vendors (great if you're indecisive or with a group) is a bar, outdoor seating (and dancing), Instagram-worthy decor, and last but not least, hip-hop music. It's quick, inexpensive, and true to the Art District's cool vibe.

-Madeline Fass, Market Editor

Swan, Design District

Singer, activist, and Renaissance man Pharrell teamed up with David Grutman to open the restaurant Swan. Located in the Design District, the 13,500-square-foot venue made such a splash that during even during Art Basel, hoards happily braved the fair's standstill traffic from Miami Beach just to get a table.

-Lilah Ramzi

Plant Miami, Various locations

Vegan, or just looking for a healthy detox after a late night in South Beach? Go to Plant Miami , a restaurant that serves up a plant-based menu (think jackfruit tacos and coconut ceviche) with ingredients from their own biodynamic farm. The outdoor patio at their Wynwood location has a plethora of palm trees and a serenity pool, making it an oasis of calm. You can stay longer than lunch, too: Plant Miami is part of a larger wellness complex called The Sacred Space, which also offers yoga and cooking classes.

Doya, Wynwood

Doya focuses on Mediterranean and mezze-style offerings, all made over a charcoal grill or wood-fired oven. And when the team behind a restaurant is comprised of alums from Cecconi's, Claridge's, and Mandolin, you know it's going to be good.

Dante’s HiFi

Calling all music enthusiasts: Dante’s HiFi vinyl-listening bar is a breath of fresh air in Miami’s saturated nightlife scene. Enjoy delicious cocktails while their expansive library of records sets the sophisticated yet vibey tone for the evening.

-Eliseé Browchuk

Estiatorio Milos

The seafood here is divine. Oysters are a must; A martini with them is even better. A friend and I also got a whole fish baked in sea salt, and I think about it constantly.

-Christian Allaire

Kiki on the River, Brickell

With its deadly cocktails and delicious fare, Kiki on the River provides the perfect place to booze while savoring that unbeatable Floridian weather. The edenic interior, draped in leaves and lit by chandeliers, accentuates the beauty of the boats beyond. Open on weekends from 1 pm to midnight, the venue acts as the Southern answer to Montauk's Surf Lodge.

Versailles, Little Havana

Best cafe con leche outside of Havana. Full confession: I’ve never had a thing to eat here—but every time I’m in Miami I make a pilgrimage to their to-go counter for their very high-octane but still mellow Cuban coffee. (Just don’t make the mistake I did on my first trip here when, due to some language issues, I accidentally ordered a colada and drank it all quite quickly. A colada, a Cuban friend explained to me, once I stopped thinking I was having a heart attack, is what you bring back for your entire extended family.)

-Corey Seymour, Senior Editor

Cote, Design District

Right in the heart of the Design District is Cote , a Michelin-starred Korean steakhouse. As one would expect, ordering a cut of meat is the way to go here—you grill it right in the middle of your table—but the ceviche is also a must-order.

Gekkō, Brickell

The latest venture from Miami hospitality mogul David Grutman, and launched in collaboration with Grammy-award-winning artist Bad Bunny, Gekkō is a Japanese-inspired jewel box serving up jaw-dropping sushi inventions and elevated steakhouse classics. Nestled in the heart of Brickell, this sleek eatery is worth a visit this Basel season and beyond.

-Elisee Browchuk

What to Do (Other than the Beach)

vizcaya

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Coconut Grove

It's a quick (30 minutes, give or take) drive from Miami Beach to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens , but you'll feel worlds away. The property was once the home of James Deering, a man who took antiques just as seriously as he did growing his thriving businesses. From the outside, the sprawling waterfront estate (completed in 1923) is a pastiche of Mediterranean Revival and Italianate Villa elements. Inside, it brims with imported European art and decorative arts spanning the Renaissance to the Rococo and more. Then, there are the gardens, a composite of designs pulled from Italy and France's best examples. The pièce de résistance is really outside in the bay—a carved limestone barge that resembles a sunken ship. It's all delightfully over the top and luxurious—what could be more Miami?

Pérez Art Museum Miami, Downtown Miami

Steps from the glittering Intercoastal, the Pérez Art Museum Miami (or PAMM) offers a dazzling collection of contemporary art. The sprawling space, boasting over 2,000 works including pieces by Olafur Eliasson and Frank Stella, delights the connoisseur and art-novice alike.

de la Cruz Collection, Design District

If you're craving a more personal experience than PAMM provides, head over to de la Cruz Collection. The formerly private collection of Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz offers the cultured visitor a chance to admire works by Salvadore Dalí, Alex Katz, Félix González-Torres, Rashid Johnson, and other contemporary masters.

The Webster, Miami Beach

While The Webster now has multiple locations across the United States, its 20,000 square foot flagship is housed in a fabulous turquoise and pink Art Deco building on Collins Avenue. It’s a must-visit for any luxury lover or architecture aficionado.

Tierra Santa Healing House, Miami Beach

Tierra Santa Healing House at The Faena is incredible, and Tammy Fender’s holistic spa in West Palm is worth the drive from Miami. It’s her only standalone studio.

-Celia Ellenberg, Beauty Director

Public Art, Miami Design District

Miami’s Design District, in my opinion, has the best public art installations of any city in the country. There’s Conscious Actions by GT2P (essentially a teal swing set), Virgil Abloh’s Dollar a Gallon, and Daniel Toole’s Jade Alley, just to name a few. Here’s an official list —take an afternoon, grab an iced coffee, head over to Paseo Ponti, and wander around.

Mrs. Mandolin, Miami

Inside Mandolin, the restaurant, is Mrs. Mandolin —a lifestyle store offering ceramics, linens, and olive oils that will immediately help recreate the feeling of being in Greece.

-Alexandra Gurvitch, Associate Director of Creative Development

Cult Gaia

It’s official: Jasmin Larian Hekmat has made her mark on Miami with the opening of her gorgeous Cult Gaia store in the Design District. The sanctuary-inspired boutique feels like you’re stepping into a modern oasis filled with sculptural accessories, outfits for a night out on the town, and the chicest beach wear for days spent in the sun.

WHERE TO STAY: LOEWS MIAMI BEACH HOTEL

Loews is one of the prettiest hotels, and they never skipped out on the details. I usually leave a place saying, “I wish they offered this or that,” but not here! They’ve thought of everything. Did I mention it’s located in the heart of South Beach, Miami? This meant we could walk to most places! We stayed in the ocean view balcony room, and it was gorgeous! At night, the view of the moon lighting up the ocean was breathtaking. You’ll have to check out my video to see it. If we wanted to hang out at the beach, we just had to take a few steps. If I could describe this hotel in one word, it would be: convenient.  The hotel staff was there to help you no matter what you needed! I have to say that the people in Miami were some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met.

I also ordered a super greens smoothie with spinach, kale, granny smith apple, cucumber, celery, pineapple, cayenne pepper, lemon, and extra ginger.

Going back to Miami is never a bad idea!

October 2, 2019 at 9:01 pm

I have never wanted to go to Miami till now! Looks so fun! My husband is my best friend and travel partner – and Hilton Head was our last trip! Though my fave getaway location was Chattanooga!

October 3, 2019 at 7:33 am

Ahhh! I think many people assume it’s only for night clubs and cheeky beaches (I THOUGHT THAT!) but it’s SOOOOO different, and I can’t wait to go back.

And Hilton Head is NEVER a bad idea!!

Kyle and I were talking about visiting Chattanooga!

' src=

October 2, 2019 at 10:15 pm

I’m on both teams for sure. I love the beach and am a huge fan of a nice pool too. I have never been to Miami but it’s on my bucket list too. Looks like the perfect weekend getaway.

I hope you visit there soon!

You’re living the dream, Taralynn! Miami looks amazing, just like it does in movies, haha! Hope you enjoyed your stay there. 🙂 I can’t remember the last time I travelled with a friend, but I’m flying to Thailand with my girlfriends this December, so that’s exciting! ❤️✨

I’ve never even considered visiting Miami but you sold it! Definitely a destination I’d like to check out some day! I’m 100% a beach person all the way! And I’ve never been on a vacation with my best friend but she recently moved to IN and I plan On flying down there for a visit! Thanks for the blog post, already looking forward to your next one!

October 3, 2019 at 7:28 am

It’s so colorful and upbeat! A great place to visit. I hope you get to visit your BF soon! 😞 I already told Becca she’s not allowed to move away from me 😆 because we already live an hour apart.

' src=

October 3, 2019 at 7:20 am

I went to Miami in college with my two best friends to visit our guy friend (who I was secretly in love with at the time). Had so much fun on the beach!! Still friends with the girls… ditched the guy! Happily married now and looking forward to going back someday with my family!

That is too funny! But crazy how life works out 😉

' src=

October 3, 2019 at 7:21 am

This looks like it was such a beautiful and special trip!

I’m torn between team beach/pool. I love how beautiful the beach is and it’s great for searching for shells and going for long walks but I’m not a huge fan of being in the ocean so that’s where I love the pool. Sitting in one of those obnoxiously cute floats and sipping on your favorite bev sounds delightful.

Haha I’m NOT an ocean swimmer that’s for sure. I watch way too much shark week. Like you, I also enjoy the morning beach walks!

October 4, 2019 at 8:31 am

I have never been to Miami, but my dad was born there! I am team beach. Nothing quite like sitting Oceanside reading a book ❤️ Last place I went with my bestie (hubby) was Lake Michigan for our babymoon ❤️

October 4, 2019 at 10:59 am

You must go!

What a fun trip. Michigan is great in the summer!

' src=

October 3, 2019 at 9:55 am

During our trips, we hang at the beach!

The perfect place to soak up the rays!

' src=

October 3, 2019 at 10:06 am

Miami is on my to-see list! I’m definitely a Team Beach person because I cannot sit still! My travel bestie and I went to San Francisco a year ago this weekend! We’re currently in the midst of determining what our next adventure will be!

Love your blog and follow IG, too!

October 3, 2019 at 12:35 pm

Love that you’re planning your next trip! No matter where you go with your best friend, I’m sure it’s going to be a blast!!!

xo xo & thanks for the kind words!

I love, love, love Miami! My hubby was born and raised there so we are lucky to visit there every few months! So much good food, its unbelievable!! Looks like you 2 had a blast! I bet you will definitely be back!! Did you make it to Wynwood?

We never made it to Wynwood, but totally doing it the next time!!

I moved to Miami 2 months ago and I’ve been avoiding South Beach like the plague! This post just might convince me to face the traffic! Thanks!

October 3, 2019 at 12:34 pm

Luckily we didn’t have to deal with traffic as tourists! 😆 But, it’s totally worth any time spent in the car! xo

' src=

I’ve never been to Miami! But I’ve always wanted to check it out! We only ever make it as far as Orlando for Dinsey lol. It looks like you had a blast! Love your pictures!

A few of the ones at the bottom of the post were actually taken by Focal Point! 😀

October 3, 2019 at 3:58 pm

I’m both a team pool and team beach 😂 They’re both winners in my book. Sometimes I want to feel the sand between my toes but then days I don’t want to be all sandy i want to lounge by the pool with a drink in hand 🍹

October 4, 2019 at 7:05 am

Every with ALL of that!

' src=

October 3, 2019 at 4:13 pm

Wow what an incredible bestie trip! Miami looks beautiful, also what an awesome idea to have professional photos done, they look stunning. I haven’t been to Miami yet, if all goes to plan I will be there next year!!. I have taken some notes from this blog for when I get to visit Miami. Definitely Team both, I love the beach but chilling by the pool with drinks is always fun. The last place I travelled overseas with a friend was, Europe we explored 14 countries in 29 days, it was the best trip ever! Have a great week!

October 4, 2019 at 11:03 am

Thanks, Harriet!

It was cool that the hotel offered that.

You should totally add Miami to your list!!

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE TRIP

' src=

October 3, 2019 at 4:38 pm

What a fun and relaxing trip! You girls look gorgeous. I went with my best friend to Miami a few years ago. We also stayed at the Loews. It is a beautiful hotel with wonderful service. I don’t know what scent they use in the lobbies, but it smells so amazing! I wasn’t blown away by Miami. The service everywhere besides the hotel wasn’t the friendliest and it just kind of has a dirty, depressing vibe. We still had lots of fun though and enjoyed hanging out at the pool and beach.

October 4, 2019 at 11:02 am

Thanks so much, Lauren!

OMG!! We said the same thing about the lobbies!!!! 😂 Never have we ever loved a hotel smell so much!!!!

Sad you didn’t have a good experience with the service at the other places!

But seriously Loews was the place to just hang out!

' src=

October 3, 2019 at 5:39 pm

1) I haven’t been to Miami but it’s on my list of soon to go places 🙂 2) team beach! 3) New York City 🙂

That’s where we’re going this weekend!

' src=

October 3, 2019 at 8:09 pm

I’ve lived in Florida my whole life and I’ve never been to Miami! I would love to plan a trip though! Also, I’m team beach! We have some of the prettiest here in Florida!

October 4, 2019 at 7:04 am

You definitely do!

' src=

October 3, 2019 at 8:46 pm

1. .Sadly no. 2. Team beach. 3. Last place I went to with my friend was Virginia Beach where we had a blast. Oceanfront hotels are the best!

Yes they are!

' src=

October 4, 2019 at 12:57 am

Love all the photo’s! I haven’t been to Miami, but it’s on my list! I really want to go to Key West though. I am definitely Team Beach being from Seal Beach… I like pools but only if I don’t have to share lol. My last bestie trip was to Las Vegas we went dancing, and hung out at some tiki bars. It was a blast! But we are talking about going to Portland or Seattle next,

Thanks, Ashton!

I agree about making it down to Key West! I want to go.

Sounds like the best trip!

October 4, 2019 at 7:25 am

Perfect for a girl’s trip!!

I love Miami! My husband & I met there while doing a teaching program. 💙We made it a point to go to the beach every Sunday (it’s where we got engaged!) but I also love the pool (and hot tub!). Did you try any Cuban coffee??

My besties & I took a trip to Michigan last fall. Great time for apple picking! We’re going to Santa Cruz in February.

October 7, 2019 at 1:09 pm

What a beautiful trip! I love that you guys focused on relaxation but also had some low key activities, and how great that your hotel had so much to offer!

I went to Miami a few years ago for a work trip but definitely didn’t get to experience anything like this!

I would say team beach for laying out and team pool for swimming!

October 8, 2019 at 10:20 am

Agree! I never like leaving a vacation-style trip feeling exhausted. I’d rather feel refreshed! I think trying to fit everything in is great, but so is laying on the beach doing NOTHING!

I hope you go back and get a vacation-style experience in Miami!!

October 7, 2019 at 1:16 pm

I have never been to Miami, but these pictures make it look so fun! I love all the color! Will you be doing a bestie and the bride trip before your own wedding too? So happy for you and this new phase of life! 🙂

My kids really want to go somewhere tropical and warm next spring for our family vacation and I think Miami fits that bill. I want to start pre-planning a few of the activities that we can do so something like walking down the boardwalk in the morning sounds really peaceful. Of course, we will plan some more exciting activities as well and try and get out in the water somehow.

ELLE Escapes: Miami

What to see, the rubell museum.

the rubell museum

The Rubell Museum houses one of the largest private contemporary art collections in America, from Jean-Michel Basquiat to Keith Haring. A Instagram-friendly highlight is undoubtedly Yayoi Kusama’s “Infinity Room” and the kaleidoscopic “Narcissus Garden.” After you’ve worked up an appetite from lapping the museum, stop by its inventive on-site Basque restaurant, Leku , with a charming dining room and outdoor garden.

St. Regis Bal Harbour Spa

st regis bal harbour spa

The St. Regis Bal Harbour Spa offers luxe treatments inspired by Caroline Astor, the late 19th-century American socialite, at a five-star hotel (what could be better?). The signature treatment is the 24K Gold Wrap, a golden sugar scrub full-body exfoliation, which notably isn’t found anywhere else in the world. The spa also features breathtaking tubs, private rain showers, and a whole menu of options for even the weariest traveler. And, if you’re on a lover’s retreat, grab your other half and snag one of the spacious couples treatment rooms to try out the 90-minute-long Four Elements Couples Journey, featuring a hydro bath, back and scalp massage, and more.

Miami’s world-renowned, 24-hour ultra club is an immersive adventure known for its unforgettable entertainment, from trapeze artists and burlesque dancers to A-list performers by the biggest names in music. contessa

Inspired by the old-world sophistication of Northern Italy’s iconic estates, Contessa is the dining destination by Major Food Group that transports guests from the Miami Design District to Lake Como. The plushy, jewel-toned interior gives it a glitzy “grand trattoria” style of elevated dining, with dishes like squash carpaccio and spicy lobster capellini that will definitely have you coming back for more. Nearby, you’ll find fashion brands dominating the area, like Fendi’s Casa, Loro Piana, and Prada.

gekko

This eatery from hospitality mogul David Grutman is a Japanese-inspired steakhouse opened in partnership with Grammy-winning artist Bad Bunny. Located in Miami’s bustling Brickell neighborhood, Gekkō serves up premium steak cuts and jaw-dropping sushi inventions ensconced in a dark and sultry atmosphere—a nod to its name, which translates to “moonlight” in Japanese.

Start your club night at Giselle Miami —a rooftop restaurant located three floors above E11EVEN, to further expand on its hospitality offering. The space boasts a menu that combines Asian, Mediterranean, and French-inspired fare and a swanky dining room with panoramic views of downtown Miami. According to its website, “Giselle serves up a journey to remember. Upon arrival, guests are transported in a private elevator up to the main entrance of the indoor-outdoor restaurant featuring a fully retractable roof, where they are invited to step into the sultry fantasy world of Giselle.” Sign us up.

The unofficial HQ of Miami (and most other cities, for that matter) is always Soho Beach House . Whether you’re passing by for an event, rooftop dinner, or meeting friends for a picante night cap, the venue always brings some of the most memorable experiences into the early hours. Psst, its new sister house, Soho Pool House , is also a good time.

The Living Room

Designed in part by Hollywood luminary Baz Luhrmann, Faena Miami Beach is pure decadence, from the Argentine murals that flank the lobby to the candy-striped lido deck and Art Deco-inspired suites. The Living Room bar in particular is the see-and-be-seen locale for late-night drinks, with live bands on rotation throughout the week. And before you head out, make sure to venture through the back for a quick photo next to the colossal 24-karat gold Damien Hirst mammoth, because if you don’t, were you ever really in Miami?

Dante’s HiFi

Dante’s HiFi is a tucked-away soulful haunt in Wynwood playing tunes exclusively on vinyl. The vintage-inspired décor and library of records make you feel like you’re hanging out in someone’s living room (offering a totally different vibe from your typical Miami going-out spots), but it’s a must-visit for craft cocktails and disco energy. (When in Wynwood!)

One of the travel industry’s most respected organizations has named Miami Beach as the “World’s Leading Lifestyle Destination of 2023.”

The World Travel Awards gave the honor to the city after claiming the top prize for “North America’s Leading Beach Destination” and “North America’s Leading City Destination” earlier in 2023.

The city was recognized for its renowned public art collection, the wide variety of museums and art galleries, the slew of spas and luxury hotels that adorn the scenic coastline and the fine-dining experiences all over the city.

"This award reaffirms that Miami Beach continues to be one of America’s most iconic, family-friendly vacation cities with pristine beaches, one-of-a-kind art deco buildings, a multitude of  arts and culture offerings, world-class hospitality along with an abundance of health and wellness activities," The City of Miami Beach said in a statement.

The World Travel Awards Recognizes Miami Beach as World’s Leading Lifestyle Destination 2023

The World Travel Awards Recognizes Miami Beach as World’s Leading Lifestyle Destination 2023

Miami Beach, FL - In early 2023, Miami Beach was officially named “North America’s Leading Beach Destination” and “North America’s Leading City Destination” by one of the travel industry’s most respected organizations.  Now, the world-famous destination has been recognized as the “World’s Leading Lifestyle Destination 2023” by the World Travel Awards, adding to Miami Beach’s collection of awards and accolades designated in the 2023 calendar year.  As a diverse city with an abundance of experiences for all travelers, Miami Beach is home to a renowned public art collection, variety of museums and galleries, a selection of globally-recognized luxury hotels and spas and travel-worthy restaurants with both established and rising chefs at the helm.

“It is an honor to be named as the World’s Leading Lifestyle Destination of 2023 by the prestigious World Travel Awards after being recognized in two previous categories that represent Miami Beach’s global appeal,” says Grisette Marcos, Executive Director of the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority. “We’ve continued to make strides as a destination leader by continuously working to showcase our city’s best attributes with interactive resources and thoughtful user experiences to connect with repeat and future visitors.”

Miami Beach welcomes travelers to a city with architectural roots and design that is perfectly situated amongst iconic waters that offer a variety of activities to connect with the natural beauty of the area and lifestyle, from water sports and beachfront yoga to menus featuring invasive species and conscious techniques to help preserve marine life.  And, this past year, the Miami Beach and Visitor and Convention Authority has doubled down on immersive technology, including the launch of the EXP Miami Beach Tours App, now available for download on Google Play and  Apple ,  that seamlessly allows users to explore the many lifestyle itineraries available in-market including a including a cultural institutions tour, public art tour, art deco tour and LGBTQ+ tour and more.

Adding to Miami Beach’s reputation as a world leader in the lifestyle space, the destination will participate in the debut Open House Miami showcase scheduled to take place March 1-2, 2024.

Open House Miami will be only the fourth city in the U.S., following New York, San Diego, and Chicago, of what has become a worldwide movement to open cities and engage the community in conversations about how to shape the future and celebrate historic design and architecture.  Complimentary direct access to experience a collection of buildings throughout Miami Beach will provide opportunities for visitors to connect, learn, discuss and debate amongst experts and themselves.

“As we work to preserve our award-winning history in 2024, we look forward to introducing new offerings and experiences, like Open House Miami, that attracts visitors from around the world,” adds Grisette Marcos. “We’re also set to further enhance our technology resources through the use of augmented reality across a number of owned platforms to help highlight the Miami Beach lifestyle.”

Miami Lifestyle: Everything You Need To Know About Miami

Table of Contents

If you’re considering moving to Miami, there’s more to the sunny, vibrant lifestyle, mix of urban living and beach relaxation, and thriving economy. Factors like cost of living, transportation, housing, and job opportunities bear consideration.

Miami is one of the top destinations many people have on their bucket lists, and the numbers don’t lie. According to Redfin , Miami has seen the highest surge in home buyers in the US, with more than 7,000 Redfin users showing an interest in moving to Miami.

From the abundance of my experience living in Miami and pulled information from authentic travel sources in Miami, I have put together this extensive guide to walk you through every relevant detail you need to know about Miami before moving, while moving, and even after you’ve settled.

You will learn about the weather, cost of living, job market, education at various levels, healthcare, culture/entertainment, security, neighborhoods, and expert tips on moving to Miami, Florida.

Demographics of Miami

Miami, Florida, is situated in the southernmost part of the United States and is known to be the third most popular city in the eastern United States that welcomes more than 40,000 South Americans and the Caribbeans alone. Looking at data from Shyft , 70 percent of Miami residents are Hispanic, while 57 percent are from another country.

While English is the official language in Miami and Florida, about 60 percent of the population understands and communicates in Spanish, making the latter the predominant language.

So as you plan to move to Miami, consider learning basic Spanish (if you can’t speak it by now), but the locals are friendly in that regard, especially when they sense you’re a foreigner and not fluent in the language yet.

Weather in Miami

The climate, average temperature, rainfall, and hurricane season are critical factors to consider when moving into Miami with concerns about the weather.

As you probably know, Miami has seemingly overwhelmingly hot, humid weather, especially through the summer months. I’ve had to spend more on power bills due to the frequent need for air-conditioning most of the year, so be prepared for this too.

The average temperature in Miami is between 60 and 75 degrees in the winter, while the storm and hurricane season begins each year on June 1 and ends in the fall of November.

I first stayed in Orlando, Florida before moving to Miami. So for someone in my shoes, the weather switch – from paradise to the apocalypse – won’t be new. But if you live outside the country and want to move to Miami, be ready for this potentially unpleasant weather.

Cost of living in Miami

Housing, transportation, utilities, food, and groceries are the relevant areas to look into if you are moving into Miami and worry about the cost of living.

First of all, expect rent to be your biggest expense, and the neighborhood you choose will play a major role in your rent and how much you’ll shell out for it. This is why I strongly advise that you consider your housing cost before moving to Miami.

If you’re taking housing around beach areas, business-saturated centers, or central parts of the city, you can expect expensive rent (well and above $3,000 per month). However, there are still budget-friendly housing options (less than $1,500 per month), but the downside is the longer commute and far reach from some facilities.

For budget-friendly neighborhoods to rent a house in Miami, I recommend Coconut Grove and Kendal. But you can use tools like Miami Herald (for subscribed users) to identify neighborhoods that match your housing budget for renting or buying.

Utilities, food, and groceries

A global statistical company, Numbeo , says that the cost of living in Miami is no different from that of San Jose, California. This is a telltale, especially considering the average expenses residents push into utilities, food, and groceries every other day.

Miami boasts upscale restaurants, luxury hotels, and designer clothing stores. But there are still inexpensive restaurants (I visit T.J. Maxx to cut down on cost)

Transportation

Another important factor that bears mentioning is the lucrative business of transportation. The high population and urban sprawl in Miami (thanks to tourists) have given rise to transportation. The downside is that the traffic can be overwhelming on a typical day.

Again, Miami isn’t exactly a city you can explore on foot. So you’ll use more public transportation if you don’t drive.

It’s a relief that Miami-Dade County’s Metrobus system covers downtown and several surrounding neighborhoods. But ridesharing companies like Uber or Lyft make life easier.

The job market in Miami

If you’re planning on relocating to Miami, you cannot but note the top industries, major employers, and job opportunities because you’ll have to work to earn a living.  Ten years ago, Forbes ranked Miami as the third worst job market in the country. But the story is shifting – for worse or for better?

Well, job opportunities in Miami are abundant, yet the competition is tight. This places people moving into Miami for work only on a tight spot because you’ll need a well-paying job to cushion the effect of the city’s high cost of living.

The top employers in Miami aren’t saturated in one area of the city alone, which is good. But in Jacksonville, for example, Duval County Public Schools employ over 14,000 people. Other top employers include naval air stations, multiple hospitals and healthcare facilities, and banking systems – you stand a better chance of finding jobs there.

Education in Miami

Education in Miami comprises public, private, and higher education schooling opportunities. However, there’s a growing introduction of online education options. Outsiders move into Miami for school purposes, but it’s an aspect you’ll eventually have to consider if you are planning to start a family in this city.

To put it mildly, Miami isn’t among the best destinations for education, child care, and affordability. It’s no wonder Florida sits in the 39 th position among the 50 best places to raise children, according to WalletHub ranking .

But it’s worth mentioning that Governor Ron DeSantis’s tenure has seen significant improvement in the education sector. According to the U.S. News and World Reports , leading high schools in Miami are School for Advanced Studies (SAS) and Archimedean Upper Conservatory Charter School. At the same time, Florida International University, Keiser University, and Broward College are top universities for both local and international students.

Healthcare in Miami

There are several hospitals and medical centers in Miami, including the University of Miami Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and Baptist Hospital of Miami.

These facilities offer a wide range of services, from emergency care to specialized cancer and heart disease treatments.

If you’re looking for health insurance options in Miami, there are several providers. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, Aetna, and Humana are just a few of the insurance companies that offer plans in the area.

Just be sure to read the fine print before you sign up – you don’t want to pay more than you bargained for.

Miami offers plenty to offer if you’re interested in alternative medicine options. From acupuncture to herbal remedies, many practitioners specialize in non-traditional healing methods.

P.S: be careful not to fall for any snake oil salesmen – there are always a few quacks in every profession While Miami has excellent healthcare options, there are some potential pitfalls to be aware of. Healthcare costs can be expensive, and there may be shortages of doctors in certain areas. Language barriers can also be an issue.

Culture and Entertainment in Miami

The nightlife, arts & culture, sports, beaches, and outdoor activities are part of the things that attract visitors to Miami daily.

Miami’s cultural scene is unparalleled, with many art and entertainment options to explore. The city offers endless museums, galleries, and performances, from the colorful Latin Quarter to the dynamic Wynwood area.

Take a stroll down Calle Ocho or unwind with mojitos on South Beach, all while being immersed in the vibrant Miami culture.

Whether you’re a music lover, an art enthusiast, or just looking to soak up some sun, Miami promises a unique and unforgettable cultural experience.

Miami is a sports lover’s paradise, with professional teams across multiple sports.

The Miami Heat, Miami Dolphins, Miami Marlins, and Inter Miami offer top-tier basketball, football, baseball, and soccer.

In 2022, Miami hosted the first-ever Miami Grand Prix at the Miami International Autodrome in Miami Gardens. The Formula 1 event drew global attention and saw an enthusiastic turnout.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just love the energy of a live sporting event, Miami’s sports scene is a must-see.

nightlife-in-Miami-when-living-Miami

Miami’s nightlife is legendary, offering diverse options for every taste.

The city truly comes alive after dark with hundreds of restaurants, dozens of nightclubs, and shopping malls.

Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of South Beach or explore the trendy neighborhoods of Wynwood and Brickell.

Beaches and outdoor activities

Derek-Gomez-enjoying-in-South-Point -Beach-Miami-as-part-of-his-lifestyle

Miami’s beaches and outdoor activities are a major draw for locals and visitors alike. With stunning white sand beaches and perfect year-round weather, it’s no wonder Miami is a top beach destination.

Popular beaches include South Beach, Hollywood Beach, Haulover Beach, and Sunny Isles Beach. Learn to surf in the warm waters or simply soak up the sun and enjoy beachfront activities.

With numerous parks, nature preserves, and outdoor recreational activities available,

There are enough attractions in Miami to convince one that the city is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

Neighborhoods security and Safety in Miami

Miami has come far from its reputation as a dangerous city. Today, it is considered a relatively safe city compared to other major US cities such as Chicago, LA, or Atlanta. Carjacking and gang violence are rare, and the most significant risk to tourists is pickpocketing and scams —  I’ve had my fair share of these awful experiences, but it was the first and hopefully the last time.

As with any major city, Miami has fewer safe areas to avoid. The locals consider Liberty City, Overtown, Little Haiti, and stretches of Ocean Drive on South Beach (particularly between 8th and 11th street) areas to avoid at night.

While the risk of serious crimes such as muggings or gang violence is low in Miami, pickpockets can be a problem.

What is the lifestyle in Miami?

Miami is known for its vibrant and diverse lifestyle, year-round sunshine, beaches, and thriving nightlife.

The city’s multicultural population contributes to its unique culinary scene, art, and music culture. Sports, outdoor activities, and water sports are also popular.

The cost of living is higher than the national average.

What do You need to know before going to Miami?

Before visiting Miami, it’s important to know that the weather can be hot and humid, and hurricanes can occur during the summer and fall. Also, the city’s culture is diverse, and Spanish is widely spoken.

As you plan to move, remember that the cost of living is high, and transportation can only be easy with a car. Still, beaches and nightlife remain popular attractions.

What is Miami best known for?

Miami is best known for its beautiful beaches, year-round sunshine, and vibrant nightlife. The city is also famous for its diverse and multicultural population, which contributes to its unique cuisine, art, and music scenes.

However, popular attractions include outdoor activities, water sports, and world-class shopping and dining.

Things I wish I knew before moving to Miami

Before moving to Miami, it’s important to know that the cost of living can be high, and traffic can be challenging. But there’s more to these factors that I had to realize the hard way. For example, it was in my second year at Miami, I experienced that hurricanes are a risk during the summer and fall.

Apart from that, here are other important details of Miami I wish I had known before moving:

  • There can be a language barrier for non-Spanish speakers.
  • The job market is competitive, and finding affordable housing can be difficult. Miami can also be socially segregated, with income inequality and racial tensions.
  • Despite Miami’s sunny climate, the humidity can be intense, and the mosquito population is high.
  • Additionally, the city experiences frequent flooding and has a higher risk of natural disasters due to its location in a hurricane zone.

Bad things about living in Miami

Beyond the attractive beaches and vibrant nightlife, living in Miami has some drawbacks.

The high cost of living, traffic congestion, and a lack of affordable housing are prominent drawbacks for the average traveler. The city also experiences occasional flooding and a higher risk of natural disasters.

Meanwhile, crime rates can be high, depending on the neighborhood. But a general potential problem is the humid and hot weather which can be challenging for some.

Parting thoughts

To summarize, if you’re considering moving to Miami, be prepared for a sunny and vibrant lifestyle. The city offers urban living and beach relaxation, with a diverse cultural scene and a thriving economy.

However, the cost of living can be high, and traffic can be challenging. So it’s best to research neighborhoods and job opportunities before making the move.

Ultimately, before moving to Miami, you want to pay attention to the weather, cost of living, job opportunities, education system, healthcare, and cultural dynamics.

I hope you found this guide helpful.

After three years of being evaluated by the internationally famous Michelin Guide, Miami and a few of its neighboring cities have ended up with 14 Michelin starred-restaurants.

Miami boasts one two-star restaurant, the glamorous French spot L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon in the Design District, the only two-star restaurant in Florida. Thirteen other area restaurants have earned single stars, including three new spots in 2024.

And not just Miami, Miami Beach and Coral Gables are represented: Thomas Keller’s The Surf Club Restaurant is in Surfside, and one of the new additions, EntreNos, is located in Miami Shores.

Here’s where you can find all the Michelin starred restaurants in Miami.

A collage of the Hard Rock Hotel, Diana Ross performing at Carbone, and an image of the JW Marriott Turnberry

In its third year, the outrageous glitz of the Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix has only grown. For hardcore Formula fans, the sprint race run prior to the main event — a first for Miami and only one of six on this year’s F1 calendar — is a source of added excitement. But for those more interested in the revved up atmosphere than the standings of the Constructors Championship, Magic City is preparing for its best showing yet, on and off the track.

Here’s a look at the best new everything to see and do in the brightest and brashest town in America during race week, starting May 3.

Where to stay

Image of the JW Marriott Turnberry Cascata Pool

While big things are in the pipeline — an Aman, a Bulgari and a Rosewood to name a few — nothing new and worth recommending will be open by the time the lights turn green. If you were thinking of heading to your favorite 5-star inn on Miami Beach, be prepared to fork it over: it’s $2,150 for a night at the Setai , $2,563 a night at the W South Beach and don’t even try Faena — they’re out of rooms. But you didn’t want the commute up Collins Avenue anyway. Instead, target crash pads closer to the paddocks at the Miami International Autodrome in Miami Gardens, Aventura and Fort Lauderdale.

You can also book at the 685-room JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa , just 20 minutes from the track. It’s hosting an F1 pop-up, featuring a collection of race memorabilia, and some exclusive dining and spa options for race fans. It’ll set you back roughly $1,132 a night with a four-night minimum.

Where to eat

The Carbone Beach supper club exterior shows a marquis sign

Restaurants are shifting into top gear this week, so make your reservations yesterday. One of the flashiest dining experiences happening over the weekend will be Carbone Beach , a so-called “Supper Club on The Sand.” Over four nights, meals masterminded by Mario Carbone will be accompanied by surprise performances (in the years past Andrea Bocelli, Wyclef Jean and Nas have all shown up). You’ll also be in fast company; boldface names like Travis Kelce , David Beckham, LeBron James, Derek Jeter, James Cordon, Serena and Venus Williams have raised a glass here — not to mention billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Ken Griffin and Stephen Ross. It’s going down at a new waterfront venue at 22nd Street and Collins Avenue this year. Oh, did we mention that it’s $3,000 per ticket?

A painted image of the unopened Lafayette Steakhouse

You can also book a waterside table for brunch or dinner at Casadonna — a coastal Italian-inspired restaurant developed in partnership with Groot Hospitality and Tao Group Hospitality. Visualized by designer Ken Fulk, the restaurant is housed in the same Mediterranean revival building as Miami’s historic Women’s Club, within the city’s burgeoning Edgewater neighborhood. Better yet? Park your yacht for the venue’s Dock and Dine service. (Because it even F1 weekend in Miami if you’re not on a boat at some point?)

Short of that, let Michelin be your guide. New stars were just awarded, and while L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon remains the only 2-star spot in the city, three restaurants just received a star for the first time. They include: EntreNos , a contemporary hub by chefs Evan Burgess and Osmel Gonzalez in Miami Shores; Shingo , a Japanese restaurant by chef Shingo Akikuni in Coral Gables; and another Japanese nigiri favorite, Oga wa , by chef Masayuki Komatsu in the Little River area.

Never miss a story.

For something completely new, try Lafayette Steakhouse in Brickell. It’s soft opening during race week in the space formerly occupied by El Tucán (it’s now operated by Mr. Hospitality Miami, the group known for the sexy, theatrical dining rooms at Queen Miami Beach and Marion Miami). Lafayette promises prime cuts and the “glitz and glamor” “of a bygone era.”

Where to play

Image of a baseball cap from the Reserve and a woman drinking water from a bottle while taking a break from padel.

Off-track, the best place to find a F1 driver isn’t yachting Monaco or lounging at Amanpuri — it’s on the padel court. Lando Norris, George Russel, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz are just a few racers who are also active players. At last year’s race, the Williams Team took the opportunity to play at billionaire Wayne Boich’s Reverse Padel club at the Miami Seaplane Base. Now you can get in on the action at the brand new Reserve Miami Design District club. The club will be opening its courts for public bookings throughout F1 week. Score.

Where to buy

Image of a waterfront balcony at the Raleigh estate.

If you’re into cars and not into income taxes, you might consider settling down. The Miami curious should head to the sales office of the Raleigh , the city’s most anticipated real estate project. A complete overall of a 1940 Art Deco gem (formerly owned by Tommy Hilfiger) adds a new 17-story glass tower to the property. Designed by starchitect Peter Marino and developed by Michael Shvo, the tower has 40 residences serviced by that forthcoming Rosewood hotel. But it’s the penthouse that’s turning heads — and you’ll need a Max Verstappen-sized income to step inside. The roughly 13,000-square-foot, full-floor penthouse here is asking “over $150 million,” according to Shvo, who expects the project to be completed in 2026. If that’s a bit rich for you, three-bedroom residences start at $10 million. Oren and Tal Alexander’s Official brokerage will be handling sales.

Where to party

Image of the interior of the E11 club.

Singer Marc Anthony is crooning the National Anthem at the race, but that’s just the start. A-list performances are popping up everywhere. After a day at the track, head to Hard Rock Live , where Puerto Rican rapper Don Omar, and Ed Sheeren are performing. Meanwhile, DJ Kaskade is spinning at the Hard Rock’s Guitar Pool.

And of course no Magic City visit is complete without a VIP stop at LIV Miami at Fontainebleau Miami Beach . Formula 1 weekend guests can expect live performances from top DJs and renowned artists, including Black Coffee (May 2), John Summit (May 3), Bizarrap and DJ Khaled (May 4).

Downtown at E11even Miami , the “ultra-club” is expecting its second biggest weekend of the year (after Art Basel) — “this is when Europeans come and drop $50,000 on a table,” an insider tells us. On May 3, 50 Cent is kicking the late-night party, followed by Afrojack on May 5. The club is even offering a $111,000  “Winner’s Circle” package, which comes with four nights at the Gabriel Hotel, dinner for 11 guests at the Giselle rooftop restaurant and that $50,000 table. That’s one way to empty your tank.

Travel + Leisure Readers' 15 Favorite Resorts in Greater Miami Beach of 2023

Sun, sand, and style complete the trifecta for our readers’ Miami resort must-haves in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023.

Siobhan Reid is an NYC-based freelance writer, editor, and copywriter. She is currently the editor-in-residence at The Vintner Project and was previously an editor at Travel + Leisure , covering culture, design, style, and wellness.

How Voting Works

What readers loved, the full list.

Courtesy of The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach

There’s no one Miami Beach experience. You could park yourself on a stretch of sugar-soft white sand, marvel at Art Deco mansions, eat your way through the area’s best beachfront restaurants, shop til you drop on Lincoln Road, or hit the nightclubs on Ocean Drive. In Miami, the hotels aren’t just for tourists, they’re stitched into the fabric of this lively, colorful city, bringing together the best of the destination under one roof.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, Travel + Leisure asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Rooms/facilities

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

T+L readers’ favorite hotels in Miami offer world-class services and amenities. Take, for example, Nobu Hotel Miami Beach (No. 4), which is home to not one but four pools, a private marina, a 22,000-square-foot spa with Natura Bissé treatments, an exclusive beach area, and, of course, the namesake Japanese restaurant from chef Nobu Matsuhisa and actor Robert De Niro. “This is luxury,” gushed one traveler. “The location is great, the rooms have amazing views, and the staff go out of their way to serve you.”

And while some travelers prefer the beachside action of properties on Miami Beach like The Setai (No. 3), others favor the calm and more grown-up atmosphere of Bal Harbor, where two of this year’s winning properties are located: The Ritz-Carlton Bal Harbour (No. 5) and The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort (No. 2). “This is the most elegant hotel in Miami,” asserted one traveler of The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort, a 216-room resort walking distance from the designer shops of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci.

When this year’s winning property emerged on the scene a few years back, it put another ritzy Miami enclave on the map. Read on to learn more.

Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club

In the mid-20th century, The Surf Club was Miami’s most exclusive social club, where Hollywood stars like Gary Cooper and Frank Sinatra rubbed shoulders with the likes of Winston Churchill and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Today, the Mediterranean Revival clubhouse is the beating heart of the Four Seasons Hotel at Surf Club, where Parisian interior designer Joseph Dirand dreamed up 77 rooms split between a 12-story glass tower and a collection of beachfront suites and cabanas. Guests used words like “immaculate,” “pristine,” and “excellent” to describe the beachfront oasis, which is also home to a fine-dining establishment from chef Thomas Keller. “This is the best of Miami,” gushed one traveler.

This is the best of Miami.

The Messi Experience opens in Miami: location, prices, opening dates & times

Miami is preparing for the premiere of The Messi Experience , the immersive and technological adventure about the life of the Argentine star that for the first time in events of this type will have a footballer, the best of all time, as protagonist. Today the show will see the light of day with a first opening exclusively for guests; From Friday it will be available to the general public.

The visitors will be able to be part of his story and witness his career from his first dreams as a child in Rosario to his successful pursuit of glory with winning the World Cup . Of course, there will also be attractions highlighting the most glorious era at club level with Barcelona. The tour consists of nine different themed rooms in a total of 2,000 square kilometers.

Through the use of advanced technology, people will be able to jump onto the dirt field where Messi first played , watch a cartoon depiction about the ups and downs of his childhood reflected in a street art mural, and see, by looking at the ceiling, how Messi’s star begins to shine.

Messi ‘very happy’ with ‘opportunity to relive unforgettable moments’

“I am very happy to be part of this project that allows fans to get closer to my journey both on and off the field. Throughout my career, I have always strived to inspire and connect with people through of my passion for football. This experience will give you the unique opportunity to relive the most unforgettable moments and feel the emotions that marked my path,” Messi buzzed about his new show.

The multimedia journey begins in Rosario, where you can explore Leo’s childhood room and the iconic place where he first kicked a soccer ball. Each moment is meticulously recreated to experience firsthand. People will even be able to train like Messi on a field specially designed for it . You can shoot on goal like he does and follow the results compared to others through the in-house system.

Where will it take place? How much does it cost?

The visit lasts approximately 75 minutes. In Miami, the first city in the world to host the experience, it will be located at The Hangar, in Regatta Harbor, at 3385 Coconut Grove.

The Messi Experience will be touring the United States this year and it has also been confirmed that it will arrive in Argentina in the summer during the month of July. Prices in Miami range from $36 to $51 . For $40 extra, fans can access the Super Fan Messi Box that includes a premium magnetic box, an exclusive backpack, a player bracelet, and a black and gold bottle and pin.

What are the opening times?

Here are the opening times for ‘The Messi Experience’:

  • Tue - Thurs: 11am - 8pm
  • Fri - Sat: 10am - 9pm
  • Sun: 10am - 8pm

Another feature of The Messi Experience is a projection on a 360-degree screen that generates realistic landscapes of his time playing for Barcelona , as well as other surprises from his career. Likewise, artificial intelligence is present which will allow you to have virtual conversations with ‘Messi’ himself.

The Messi phenomenon has burst into the United States like nothing before. There is no corner of the country that his shirts, either from Barça or also from Inter Miami, can be spotted.

The immersive technological show about Messi's life premieres in Miami before touring across the world.

Travel study reveals the least-walkable city for tourists in the U.S. is in Florida

Summertime is right around the corner. And for some Florida cities, like Orlando, Tampa and Miami, that means it’s almost time for waves of tourists .

And whether those tourists explore on foot or by car is determined by where in the state they plan on vacationing.

Online tutoring marketplace Preply conducted a study to find the most and least walkable touristy towns in the U.S.

Orlando made the list, but not for its walkability. Although Walt Disney World (which is basically a city in itself) has very walkable theme parks, the actual city of Orlando is one of the least walkable in the country.

Here’s where and why Orlando ranked on Preply’s list of the most and least walkable cities , which other Florida city made the list and Orlando's walkability score.

What U.S. city has the most walkability?

“To build our list of the most walkable cities in the U.S., we analyzed the Top 30 most-visited cities in the U.S. and used TripAdvisor to highlight five top attractions per city,” Preply’s study says.

“We then calculated the distance, walking time and how many steps it would take to walk between the five top attractions in each city, crowning the shortest walking distance cities as the most walkable destinations.”

Chicago took the top ranking as the most walkable city for tourists on Preply’s list.

Here are the rest of the top 10 most walkable cities from Preply’s study:

  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Nashville, Tennessee
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Santa Fe, New Mexico
  • New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Portland, Oregon
  • Boston, Massachusetts and Boise, Idaho (tied for seventh place)
  • Austin, Texas
  • Washington D.C.
  • Savannah, Georgia

What U.S. city has the least walkability?

Two Florida cities made Preply’s Top 10 list of the least walkable tourist cities in the country.

Orlando took the crown for the least walkable city overall and Miami tied for eighth place, with St. Louis, Missouri.

Here are the rest of the top 10 least walkable cities from Preply’s study:

  • Orlando, Florida
  • Los Angeles, California
  • San Francisco, California
  • Honolulu, Hawaii
  • Memphis, Tennessee
  • Cincinnati, Ohio
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Miami, Florida, and St. Louis, Missouri (tied for eighth place)
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • San Diego, California

What is the walkability score in Orlando, Florida?

“Orlando takes the throne as America’s least foot-friendly destination, with a whopping 31 miles and 65,000 steps to cover between its five most popular attractions,” the study said.

“By our estimates, a hike between the Universal Islands of Adventure, Discovery Cove, Universal Studios, Magic Kingdom Park, and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter would take a leg-tenderizing 11 hours and 19 minutes.”

Although it’s highly unlikely that anyone is visiting all of these parks in one day, that total walking time is only around an hour and a half less than it would take you to drive and fly from Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park to Disneyland in Paris (that trip would take around 10 hours and 45 minutes).

If you’ve never been to Orlando and are planning a visit this summer, remember that you’ll have to rent a car or arrange a ride to take you from place to place throughout the city.

“If you’re still keen to explore Orlando’s top tourist hotspots, a local taxi ride would start at $2.90 and cost (between $1 and $2 per mile),” the study said. “Exploring the top five destinations would create a taxi cost of at least $70.”

Orlando also ranks low for walkability on Walkscore.com, scoring a 42 for overall walkability . For reference, that score is out of 100 and New York City ranks in the high 80s on this scale.

We know that South Floridians love to bring their dogs to the supermarket, the beach and out to eat. But did you know we live in a “Pets’ Paradise”?

We do, according to “Pets in Paradise,” a show that will appear on the Travel Channel on Tuesday, April 23, and Thursday, April 25, as part of a marketing program sponsored by the Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council. The half-hour show explores dog parks, beaches, hotels, restaurants and attractions in Palm Beach County and offers insight from a local veterinarian who details how to travel with a happy dog.

The show targets travelers but also locals who can learn that their pets will be welcome at more places than they might realize. Several tourists interviewed explained how they visited South Florida to escape northern winters and were thrilled their dogs could run freely in local dog parks and beaches.

The hosts of “Pets in Paradise” visit Juno Beach’s dog-friendly beach, the Palm Beach Lake Trail, West Palm Beach’s farmers market, Palm Beach International Airport, Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, West Boca’s Canine Cove, as well as restaurants and hotels that welcome pets with bowls of water and treats. Delray Beach veterinarian Jesus Aramendi offers tips on how to travel in cars and on planes with dogs in tow.

“There were so many more pet-friendly places than we anticipated,” said Paul Waide, a vice president at Apex Productions, the Riviera Beach-based company that produced the episode. “All these places welcomed us with open arms.”

If the episode gets lots of views, Waide said Apex hopes to find sponsors who will help produce shows in other pet-friendly destinations across the country.

“Pets in Paradise” will air on the Travel Channel at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, and Thursday, April 25.

Michelle Hillery, Palm Beach County’s film commissioner, said “Pets in Paradise” will air on several South Florida media outlets, including thepalmbeaches.tv , which showcases county destinations, and on streaming services run by local hotels, the Palm Beach County Convention Center and Palm Beach International Airport.
