Lily Allen, daughter of actor Keith Allen, is an English singer-songwriter known for her outspoken attitude and Myspace success story.

Born in 1985, Lily is the daughter of Welsh comic Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen. After Keith left the family, trouble began for Lily as they were forced to live on a council estate, struggling to get by. During this time Lily was experiencing difficulties at school as she bounced between establishments, often getting expelled for her drinking and smoking.

When she was 11, her musical talents were spotted by Rachel Santesso who began to teach Lily to sing and after she reduced an audience to tears singing in a school assembly, Lily knew music was something she was going to pursue.

When she was 15 she dropped out of school and began to chase up deals. She bounced around a few labels, using her dad’s connections as leverage until in 2005, Regal Recordings gave Lily £25000 to finance a record. Given how busy the label were with other, higher profile releases, Lily was forced to operate on her own. She set up a Myspace page and began to post demos which instantly caught the public’s attention, building up an online following until the press had to take notice.

The Observer, much to her label’s surprise, ran a feature on Lily in early 2006 and then, with a renewed sense of confidence in her, Regal Recordings released Lily’s debut album ‘Alright, Still’ in July 2006. The album went to number 2 in the charts and turned triple platinum which was just the start of a long stint of success.

Her follow up ‘It’s Not Me, Its you’ hit number one and, after a long hiatus during which she started a family, she hit number one again with ‘Sheezus’ in 2014. Years later it’s become clear that dropping out of school was a very good idea for Lily Allen.

Live reviews

Lily Allen's show was probably one of the best performances I've seen in a very long time. This was my first time seeing her.

Having LolaWolf as her opening act was one of her best business decisions.

I could feel Lily Allen's energy the entire performance. I loved the collective symbolism of her set, song choices and wardrobe. The baby bottles on stage represent her being a mother of two young children. The song choices she made were nostalgic and familial centered. Most of the songs she choice from her new album were about her husband and children. Her rainbow colored wardrobe represented not only a youthful energy, but her support for people of all kinds including the LGBT community.

Overall, the show was fun. She makes you laugh. She makes you cry. I rarely ever go to a show and wish that it wouldn't end.

Lily Allen is very talented vocally. She knows how to grab the attention of her audience. She made the audience feel like they were a part of her community when she asked everyone to light up their cell phones and then took a selfie with her audience in the background.

She is not as vulgar or aggressive as she is portrayed in the media. She's an opinionated, intelligent, talented woman that is using her talents to make a difference in the world.

I can not wait for her to go on tour again.

I love Lily Allen and her songs!!!

However, the experience was not great. I had waited on queue 2 hours ahead to get good seat, and yes this is my choice to start with, so I don't complaint about it, but it meant that I had high expectation for the show and a great experience.

When it was the show time (7pm), I am very exciting to get in and watch the show. Unfortunately the show started 2 hours late. I am not sure whos fault it was, but it was an unpleasant waiting time... and showed off an unprofessional concert plan... when it finally started, the background lighting was too bright. I can barely see the singer, had to close my eyes most time, and not just me, I see others did the same too...

I wonder if the lighting department tested it from the audience perspective?

I didn't have a good experience with lights at the other show of "Cigarettes after sex" either, but it was way worse with the LiLy Allen show...

I do love the light effects from those standing light poles though, but the background light! It is wayyyyyyy too heavy.

Not sure if I would come back again. If I do, I would love to see my favourite singer and not closing my eyes all the time.

The Lily Allen experience was certainly one to remember. The stage was set up with baby bottles—an indication of her life after her 2009 hiatus. She married and had two kids! She first started her show off with "sheezus". A song about her return to the music industry. Another one of her memorable songs was "LDN". When the winds group homogenized with the proccusions all the fans started to scream so loud (including myself). The lyrics are hilarious. Next that I remember was "not fair" and the 10 year old song "smile". Everyone bumped to the beat and sang along to the lyrics that I would have to describe as catchy, sassy, clever, funny, and let's not forget FUN! Towards the end Lily played "22", "L8CMMR", "Fuck you" and finished off with one of the best: "hard out here". Though I wish she played "air Balloon" and "Knock 'Em Out" I was abundantly satisfied with last night's set list. I recommend Lily for those who love artists that are really care free and "out there" lyrically. Frankly, I'd go to tonight's show if I didn't have to go to work the next morning. It was a great show! Loved every minute!

I have been a fan of Lily Allen live shows since the beginning. Quite literally the very beginning. She performed at the T in the Park festival on a stage for up and coming artists in 2006 and during this performance she was told that her debut single “Smile” had gone to number one. Years later she still describes this as one of the most special gigs for her and having been there- I’m inclined to agree that it really was special!

If I was asked to sum up a Lily Allen show in one word it would be simply “fun”. Her onstage banter follows no script and she is charming and witty throughout. Lily Allen is an artist who doesn’t take herself too seriously. Her lyrics are clever and funny and she has a brilliant stage presence.

I have also seen Lily in a variety of venues. From tiny unknown stages at festivals to Glastonbury’s main stage and from small sweaty gig venues to 10,000 capacity arenas. She manages to keep the feel of the gigs the same no matter where she’s playing and this is what makes her such a unique performer.

Lily Allen is such a personality. She really is an entertainer. I lived in North London for two years and was really hoping to hear 'Littlest Things' - a song that is near and dear to me. Although that song was not part of the set, I was blown away at how genuine and real, sweet, funny, honest, and of course - legitimately killing the game on the mic. The show was so good and I am so glad I went to see and support her. I also was so excited for the show I forgot my phone in my car. At first, I was super bummed not to record favorite songs and get a photo with her at the end. However, it allowed me to be completely present the entire show. It felt like a really special show (for me) because she ended with my favorite song on her new album, Apples, then when we cheered non stop for 5 minutes she came back out and ended the entire show with another favorite, Fuck You. I'm holding out for her next show to hear her sing, "Littlest Things" at her next show.

I was a little disappointed, I'm sorry to say.

I'll separate the facts that the support, Fryars, alternated between pitifully dull and physically painful to listen to and she came on quite late which meant a lot of standing around.

Instead, I was principally disappointed by Lily's limited engagement with the audience which made for quite a low-energy gig. She spent a lot of time walking back and forth across the stage and avoiding eye contact with us. We were all pretty up for it and if she had wanted to, we could have had a real party.

The sound was good and she did all the big songs. The extensive visual rig was largely wasted as the LD seemed to not want to over-shadow the lit-up baby bottles which festooned the stage.

I just wish that Lily had come across as a little more excited to see us.

Lily Allen was as cute and cheeky as I expected. The scene was: stage was fun with light up baby bottles, booty shakin' dancers on half of the songs, 3 outfit changes, and her fab potty mouth. She sang every song live, which was refreshing (can't believe I have to say that)... and even no backing tracks. She mentioned a few times she felt she was losing her low range voice, but it didn't sound bad to me! Good energy on stage and played to the crowd. The only thing was she didn't play very long… an hour and a half? We were out of the club before 10:30pm. Coulda done a few more songs, it felt pretty quick. All in all, worth my $30 ticket.

I went to her show at the roundhouse in London and it was amazing! other than the couple in front of us who were getting off the whole time, were rude about the support act, S-X, who was great, and took pictures for the first 20 mins she was on and then, thankfully, went, it was really fun. At the end she brought on Shy FX and stamina mc to do their recent song 'roll the dice', which was really good. Her voice was very good and she performed all of them really well.

I've been a Lily Allen fan and was waiting for a long time for her to play in the US. I was not disappointed with the show it was fun and full of energy. As a Lily Allen fan I can say she played all her bops it was amazing. The best part of the an the incredible night, was the closer of the show Fuck You (Very Much, everyone with their middle fingers up, singing and dancing. It was amazing and cathartic, loved every minute of it!!!!

Lily Allen is hard worker.

She writes, sing, produces and guide her music leading to a true art process.

She is able to criticize herself and be honest about her timeline career.

I had a great time in her live concert in New York City which was crowded. The artist make us rethink about many of our society issues with soft and outgoing melodies.

It's fun, authentic and honest.

Lily allen locks in first aus tour in four years.

For Lily Allen fans, this is a Monday to remember. The British pop superstar has finally announced her return to Australia next year, after four long years away!

Arriving on Aussie and New Zealand shores in February 2019, Lily will have her latest record, No Shame , in hand as well as a new memoir called My Thoughts Exactly which comes out on 20 September.

No Shame came out back in June and was a return to personal honesty for Lily, with her saying, "When I started writing the record I was in a sad, dark place, and this record could almost be starting at midnight, and getting through to the end of the day. It's been cathartic for me. There's no two ways about it. It starts in a dark place, for a reason, then ends up in a more optimistic place, for a reason.”

COVER REVEAL I’ve wanted to share this with you for such a long time and I’m glad I can finally do it. My Thoughts Exactly, out 20th September When women tell their stories, loudly, clearly and honestly, things begin to change – for the better... https://t.co/gx7EpbxNhj pic.twitter.com/3syPaUOddg — LILY ALLEN (@lilyallen) August 15, 2018

And - even better for Aussie fans - it seems Lily's in town right now (she's been Instagrammin' about it) ahead of her February tour.

Lily Allen On Coming Out Of Her “Shell”, New Album ‘No Shame’ & Australian Tour Plans

By Cyclone Wehner

UK street-pop icon Lily Allen has delivered the comeback album of 2018 in No Shame — her rawest work yet. Not that Allen ever disappeared. But even she was disillusioned with her last album, 2014’s Sheezus . Indeed, the singer-songwriter has spoken of enduring an “identity crisis” after she married builder Sam Cooper and began raising children. Allen paid too much heed to industry dictates and trends, especially with her image.

The Londoner grew up around the volatile show business world — her dad the actor/comedian Keith Allen and mum Alison Owen a film producer. Dropping out of school, Allen took a DIY approach to her own career. She was among the earliest MySpace upstarts. She introduced a fresh British hybrid of punk, ska and (post-Mike Skinner) hip-hop on 2006’s debut Alright, Still , her lyrics wryly observational. Notably, Allen liaised with future ‘It’ producers Greg Kurstin and Mark Ronson. Alright, Still cracked the US charts.

The ‘Smile’ hitmaker soon transformed into a slashie, hosting a talk-show and venturing into fashion and entrepreneurialism. Plus the forthright Allen threw herself into activism, recently advocating for refugees. Nonetheless, she also became a tabloid fixture as a ‘wild’ party girl. Allen’s deeply personal experiences with mental health, miscarriage and the stillbirth of a son were exploited by the same media.

With No Shame , Allen has followed Kanye West and Taylor Swift by going meta. In the preface, ‘Come On Then’, she counters the media commentary. However, Allen shuns artifice. She isn’t cultivating a persona, nor escaping one. This evolving feminist writes about her marriage breakdown, parenting dilemmas, friendships, new romance, mental health, partying and substance abuse. In fact, ‘sharing’ is the album’s theme as much as selfhood. Musically, No Shame spans everything from electro-soul to tropical to classic pop.

Bunkering down in Los Angeles in 2015, Allen commenced album four with her old studio pal Fryars, before returning to London. And she reconnected with Ronson (cue: the piano ballad ‘Family Man’ and ‘My One’). Allen has a cult fandom in the grime scene, guesting on Stormzy’s ‘Cigarettes & Cush’ (alongside Kehlani). For No Shame , she plays off her rapper bestie Giggs on the lead single ‘Trigger Bang’. A&Ring herself, Allen likewise brought in two dancehall trailblazers — Nigeria’s Burna Boy (Allen blessed his ‘Heaven’s Gate’) and London’s Lady Chann.

Prior to this chat, Allen’s label requested Music Feeds focus on the star’s music, not her personal life (she IS writing a memoir). But, if Allen got the memo, she ripped it up, being characteristically unfiltered.

Allen hasn’t lost her playful charm, either — even the telephone conference administrator gushes “she’s adorable”.

Music Feeds: It’s compelling how the narrative and musical threads come together with No Shame. I know you’ve expressed some uncertainly about Sheezus. What did you resolve to do with this record?

Lily Allen: Well, I think I just wanted to do the exact opposite of Sheezus. With Sheezus, I definitely set out to make an album for the market and to try and be successful and live up to the hype that I had created with album one [Alright, Still] and album two [It’s Not Me, It’s You], whereas this record is an antidote to that. I feel like I sat down at the beginning of this record and was like, “What is it that you want, what are you doing?” And it was, like, “Well, I would like to be looked at like less of a cartoon and taken more seriously as a songwriter, which is what I’m good at.”

Also I think the cartoon version of me that came out about on Sheezus, I was so uncomfortable with it, that it’s kind of where my dalliance with excessive amounts of alcohol came from as well. I think that I felt so sort of weird, and things didn’t feel right, but I didn’t know how to articulate it and didn’t want to disappoint anybody. So I just started to drink so that I could be more comfortable in that situation.

I just wanted, with this record, to do something completely different and to be connected and for it to feel authentic and to not have to put myself in that situation where I was trying too hard and having to be something that I didn’t feel like I was — and also just stopping the bullshit. I didn’t go to any red carpet events. I wasn’t out at celebrity parties. You know, the handbags stopped coming through the door and the designer clothes stopped showing up. Those things were hard as well, but it was a choice. It was like, “That’s not what you are, you’re a songwriter, so let’s write some songs. Forget about the other shit.”

MF: The sonics of this album hark back to your early work, with the influences of reggae and ska, but there are also some bespoke Lily hybrid sounds. What in the wider pop culture fed into this? What kinds of things are you into?

LA: With all of the songs on this record, most of them, bar from ‘Cake’, which is the last one, were all written completely from scratch. On previous records, sometimes I’d be sent a track almost finished — not in terms of topline and lyrics — but whatever’s going on in the background. So most songs on this record were just written on a piano or on a guitar and then we built the production up from there. But I was very much part of that process, which I haven’t always been.

I guess what shaped it was what I was listening to, really, so Jamie xx stuff and lots of Lil Silva… I’ve always listened to lots of reggae and ragga music and dancehall, so that’s always gonna play a big part in what I do, especially with the more uptempo stuff. And then Fryars, who I collaborate with, brings his own ideas as well, and [DJ] Seb [Chew] and [studio gun] Emre [Ramazanoglu]… Seb’s my manager.

‘Come On Then’, which is the first track on the album, and ‘Lost My Mind’ — we’d got a few different producers to come in and try those tracks and it just didn’t feel quite right, so we ended up producing those ones ourselves, which was different for me. Playing the drums on a drum machine myself was a new experience, and having the confidence to let that stick… And, actually, even having the confidence to articulate and say, “It doesn’t feel right, I want it to sound more like this,” I’ve never really done that before, which is mad, seeing as it’s my name that’s written on the front of all of my records and who people come to see in the shows. So, yeah, I definitely claimed more agency with this record than I have done before.

MF: I love the interplay you have with Giggs. You’ve discussed your friendship and how ‘Trigger Bang’ came out of that. Could you work together again? Because you guys have something there!

LA: Yeah! Giggs is like my brother now. We speak three or four times a week. He buys my kids birthday and Christmas presents… He’s been a real part of bringing me out of my shell. I guess people would never associate me with being stuck in a shell, but I really was. I really struggled coming out of my marriage. I had a run-in with a stalker a couple of years ago and so I was deeply affected by that and disconnected from my main group of friends. Everything that man said completely changed for me.

Giggs came into my life and really helped me, musically and socially. So, yeah, definitely, we’ll work together again. Our studios are a five minute walk from each other so, whenever he’s in town and I’m in town, he’ll pop by and play me music and, if there’s anything that I wanna jump on, I’m sure he’d let me and then vice versa (laughs).

MF: The other collab I really enjoyed was that with Lady Chann on ‘Waste’. It’s a really powerful number.

LA: That song was written with a guy called Ellis [Taylor], who’s of a production duo called Show N Prove. Lady Chann lives at the end of my road. I definitely wanted to have a female feature on this record, but I didn’t want to force it by just being like, “Right, who’s in the charts and who’s a girl?” I wanted it to be authentic and formed from a real relationship.

Chann came with me to the studio — actually, I bumped into her on the morning that we wrote that song. She was like, “Oh, what are you doing?” and I said, “Oh, I’m just heading off to the studio.” She’s like, “Oh, I’m going to the doctor’s, but I am around later – why don’t I come by?” And I said, “Yeah, sure.” So she came over. Ellis was mucking around with some music and then that beat materialised and she was like, “I can definitely do something on this.” Then we ended up figuring out what the concept was and going from there.

All of the collaborations have been really natural, nothing was forced. It wasn’t like I shopped anything out. I never really agreed with that — I’ve not disagreed with it — but, ever since I started in this business, people have always said to me in interviews, “What’s your dream collaboration?” I just think, I don’t know. There’s like an energy in the room when you’re collaborating with people.

I definitely couldn’t do the ‘sending something to someone and then waiting for them to email it back’ kind of collaboration, ’cause it’d just feel too inauthentic for me. I understand why other people do it, but I just wanna work with cool people that wanna work with me and it feel real. I think that we’ve succeeded with that with Burna Boy and Chann and Giggs.

MF: This album is quite meta and such a strong statement in itself. You could follow Beyoncé or Taylor Swift and just not do interviews. The record almost says everything! So I wondered what it was that you’re keen to amplify? Why you’re even talking to us fools?

LA: Well, I think I’m contracted to (laughs). It’s not that I don’t want to talk to you. But, yeah, I definitely scaled it back a lot compared to what I’ve done in the past. Beforehand, I think I would have probably come out to Australia and done a run of promo, which I haven’t done this time ’round. I trust my manager now to make those decisions for me. I’m not having those conversations with the label myself. I guess I just do what I’m told, really!

MF: But what do you hope listeners take away from the record?

LA: (Long pause). I don’t know! I think I just hope that they like it. I feel really confident in the fact that I’ve written the best record that I could write at this point in my life and it feels like the most authentic record that I could write, and that was what I set out to do. I feel like I’ve already succeeded in that, to be honest. So I’m not really worried about what’s gonna come back. I don’t really mind how people interpret it. I hope that nobody’s offended; that would be annoying or sad. But I hope that people like it.

MF: Actually, is there any prospect of you touring Australia down the line?

LA: Yeah, I definitely think that there will be a plan in action. When I say I would have usually come out, I mean just having come out there to do some promo. But I’m pretty sure that there are some plans afoot for coming over and touring, for sure.

MF: How has your headspace changed since you started No Shame and now?

LA: I feel a lot clearer. I feel optimistic. I know what my boundaries are and what it is that I wanted to achieve and how far I’m willing to be pushed. I think that primarily I’ve realised that I need to be around for my kids. There’s not the anxiety that I’ve had on previous records, because I know that I’m not gonna be away for months at a time, because I have to get back for my children. So I think that sort of open-ended, not knowing thing that has given me lots of anxiety in the past. I don’t feel that anymore, because I know where home is and that I’ve gotta get back to it.

MF: You reunited with Mark Ronson for this record. I imagine your dynamic has changed a little bit since you were both working in the early days. What is it like?

LA: It’s actually quite hard working with Mark… I mean, it hasn’t really changed, the dynamic, ’cause we’re incredibly close. He is also like a brother to me. I’ve known him for nearly 15 years now. He’s also best friends with my manager… Actually, it was easier working with him in the early days because I didn’t really care what he thought, whereas now, if he says something that’s annoying, I really take it to heart.

It’s difficult for me to articulate or to communicate back to him because we have a relationship, so there’s a relationship to be saved. I can’t just be annoyed and storm out and never come back (laughs)… But he’s very opinionated and so am I, so sometimes it is a little bit fraught in the studio with me and Mark. He’ll say things, not that upset me, but that irk me and vice versa. Also, because he’s so successful, I guess he sometimes forgets that I’m Lily and that I knew him before he was a superstar producer. I’m sure if he does sessions with younger musicians that he can talk to them in a certain way and get away with it. I’m like, “Uh-uh! Hey, Mark. I know you. This isn’t you.” So it’s an interesting one.

MF: The latest single is ‘Lost My Mind’ and it’s such a melancholy, beautiful record.

LA: Yeah, it is a song about going into a relationship and it being sort of non-exclusive and feeling like that would be okay at the relationship’s inception, but then it becoming quite clear, quite quickly, that the non-exclusivity thing is a bit of a problem, for me anyway. The lack of attention is a problem for me, and contributed to my mental health being quite severely affected. So, yeah, it’s about that.

MF: You’ve done some shows in the US lately. You had that huge record there with T-Pain [2011’s ‘5 O’Clock’ sampled Allen’s ‘Who’d Have Known’]. How important is the US market to you? Because you’re such a quintessentially British artist and the Americans took a while to open up to particularly urban music with different cultural inflections – grime is still underground there.

LA: You know what, I’m very driven when it comes to making music, but I’m just not very driven on the back end of things. So whatever opportunities are presented to me, then I’ll give it a go — and, if works, it works and, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. I don’t really have a game plan with America. It’s just sort of like, you know what, if radio pick up on a song and people wanna buy tickets for the tour, I’m there. But, if not, I’m not gonna get too worried about it. I’ve got other areas that I can concentrate on. So I don’t really feel any type of worry about it. I just go wherever the wind takes me.

Lily Allen’s new album ‘No Shame’ is out now.

Allen, who last visited Australia in 2014, has sold five million records worldwide since her 2006 debut album Alright, Still. The record featured the hit single Smile and earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.

Allen’s Perth show will feature material from her fourth and latest album, No Shame, on which she explores the end of her marriage, her feelings about motherhood, friendship and more.

“There’s no shame in anything I’m saying,” Allen said. “When I started writing the record I was in a sad, dark place, and this record could almost be starting at midnight, and getting through to the end of the day.

“It’s been cathartic for me. There’s no two ways about it. It starts in a dark place, for a reason, then ends up in a more optimistic place, for a reason.”

Lily Allen at work on new album: “You will be able to hear things soon”

She is also re-issuing ‘It’s Not Me It’s You’ for Record Store Day 2024

Lily Allen attends the press night performance of

Lily Allen has revealed that she is underway with work on a new album, and told fans that they can expect to hear the new material “soon”.

The update was shared by the British singer-songwriter last night (February 15), when she took to social media to respond to a fan asking about new music.

“Please when are you making a follow-up to your best LP, ‘No Shame’?,” they asked the singer on X/Twitter yesterday, to which she replied: “I am making it now, I don’t know how long it will take, but you will be able to hear some things soon.”

At time of writing, it is not yet clear what the album will be titled or when it is expected to be released. However, when it does arrive it will mark Allen’s first full-length LP ‘No Shame’ , which arrived back in 2018.

The update surrounding an upcoming album also comes just weeks after the singer teased fans by stating she had already written around 50 songs for a new project .

At the end of January, she took to social media to reply to a fan who wrote: “My Roman Empire is to think how Lily Recorded around 40 songs for her 5th project and NONE was released…”, cheekily quipping that the number of songs written is “more like 50 now”.

Following her reply, a fan asked where ‘Party Line’ – an unreleased song that Lily Allen debuted live in 2018 – was, to which Allen said it was “in a Dropbox or a WeTransfer” but couldn’t be accessed as she had forgotten the username and password.

It still remains unclear whether the post means the song has been lost forever, or if it will be released in the future once it has been recovered.

As well as dropping hints that new music is on the horizon, Lily Allen has also revealed that she will be re-releasing her album ‘It’s Not Me It’s You’ for Record Store Day 2024 .

She shared the news on social media yesterday, posting a link to Record Store Day’s official website and adding a photo of the new vinyl edition – which comes a zoetrope disc. It will be available from April 20 and you can check out other Record Store Day 2024 releases here .

Lily Allen’s teasing of new music comes after she revealed that she had returned to the studio after her guest performance at Olivia Rodrigo’s Glastonbury set in 2022. After the appearance– she and Rodrigo duetted ‘Fuck You’ – she hinted that she might not be retiring from music just yet.

Speaking about returning to the studio, Allen accredited the performance with Rodrigo for “sparking something” in her that rekindled her yearning to write and record new music. Before this, Allen said in 2020 that she had finished working on a new album and was writing for three musicals at the time, though that supposed album has never been released.

She also spoke to NME back in 2018, where she opened up about what it was like to write and record her last studio album and her attitude towards social media. Check it out above.

Besides music, Allen has also forged a name for herself in acting – both onstage and on screen. She made her theatre debut in the 2021 play 2:22 A Ghost Story , followed by last year’s The Pillowman . On-screen, she has appeared as Elizabeth Taylor in the 2019 film How To Build A Girl and as Mel in the 2023 comedy series Dreamland .

Schoolchildren as young as nine were filmed parading in military uniforms while carrying replica machine guns and chanting war songs in Russia .

The primary school pupils carried 'toy guns' and chanted 'there is no forgiveness to your enemies' as they marched in the industrial city of Elektrostal, which lies 36 miles east of Moscow.

The parade coincided with a call from Vladimir Putin 's top security official for a boost to military training for children.

It also comes as tension between Russia and the West is at the highest since the end of the Cold War.

During the event, the pupils chanted war songs which included the line 'there is no forgiveness to your enemies'

Footage shows the nine-year-old's marching in line and chanting the war song as parents and teachers watch on.

Other scenes showed pupils aged seven to 16 also marching in military attire while singing the war songs.

During their chants the schoolchildren said: 'We are Russians, God is with us! We are Russians, Russians don't sell out.'

The song also included the line: 'There is no forgiveness to your enemies' and 'The last breath is for the Motherland.'

The scenes come after spymaster Nikolai Patrushev, head of the Kremlin's security council, demanded a boost in Russia's youth army, set up in 2015, which already numbers 803,000.

Critics have alleged the Young Army Cadets National Movement, also known as Yunarmia, resembles the Hitler Youth in Nazi Germany, and also alleged rising militarisation in Russia.

However Patrushev - who once headed the FSB security service - has called for 'creating and developing training centres in regions for the military and patriotic upbringing of young people'.

This would help to combat extremism and 'pro-Western liberal values', he said.

While the  parade in Elektrostal is not specifically linked to Yunarmia it has been criticised by a psychologist Elena Kuznetsova for glorifying war and death.

Children should not wear military uniform, and that the organisers portrayed war as a holiday, she said.

'For most of our ancestors in the war years, these clothes were a posthumous garment,' she told Takie Dela news outlet.

'The military uniform is a dress for death.

'To suffer an untimely death, to meet it yourself, prematurely.

'Leaving traces of grief wherever such uniform boots step.

'Children need to buy clothes about life, not about death.'

Organisers of the Elektrostal event said: 'It was not a parade, but a school check of marching and songs.'

School deputy head Elena Karpacheva said children aged nine had carried 'toy guns', while others aged seven to 16 had only marched and sung war songs.

Defenders of the youth army and such events with children say it allows children to stay out of trouble while fostering patriotism.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
