After walking through Al Fahidi Courtyard Houses, we walk by to the Dubai Museum (currently closed for renovation), pass by the Ruler's Court and then experience the famous Hindi Lane. After learning about the Old Textile Souk, Meena Bazaar and the Indian community's influence on Dubai, we get to the Creek Waterfront Abra Taxi Stand.

We look out onto Sheikh Saeed's House and Heritage Village as we enjoy a traditional boat ride to get to Deira. Here we learn about the historic trading activities that go on even till today in the Spice Souk and the Gold Souk. The tour ends at the Gold Souk. From here guests can enjoy a traditional Emirati meal if they choose.

The Al Ras Metro is close by and provides connectivity to the rest of the city.

Built in mid-1800s, the Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood was once a bustling trading hub for merchants. It was conveniently situated near the banks of the Dubai Creek and furthermore is protected from attack by ancient forts and watchtowers. Traditional Emirati architecture is characteristic in these restored and preserved houses.

These have now been restored to serve as boutique hotels, art studios and cafes. We will walk through these houses, and understand their simplicity in design, functionality and relevance to the seasons.

Dubai’s Craig fires bogey-free 69 at UAE Challenge

Golf in uae, golf in uae uae.

17-year-old is making his Challenge Tour debut at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club

Tommy Fleetwood

Also in this package

  • UAE's Grenville-Wood seeking first pro win at UAE Challenge
  • Dubai’s Oscar Craig to lean on World No.11 Tommy Fleetwood at UAE Challenge
  • Alex Levy hoping to go one better at UAE Challenge

Dubai resident Oscar Craig got off to a dream start on his Challenge Tour debut, firing an impressive three under par 69 at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club during the first round of the UAE Challenge.

The 17-year-old, who secured an invite into the event after winning the Ras Al Khaimah Men’s Open, told Gulf News earlier this week that he was “nervous” ahead of mixing it with DP World Tour winners and the game’s emerging stars.

But judging by his first round performance, which included birdies on the fourth, eighth and 18, he had nothing to worry about.

"The start of the first nine, I just played really solid,” said Craig, who sits in a share of 14th at the time of writing, with the afternoon wave yet to finish.

“I didn't miss many shots, I just stayed confident on every single shot. Got to the back nine, again, my long game was strong and I felt confident with it I just didn't hole many putts. The last few holes I struggled a little bit, but then I holed some good putts so it levelled out a bit.

“Overall, I'm really happy."

Craig also has the advantage of having one of the world’s best golfers on his bag this week, with World No.11 Tommy Fleetwood, Craig’s stepdad, providing his wisdom to the youngster, just two weeks after finishing inside the top three at the Masters Tournament.

"Landed Monday night, we were here Tuesday morning, played 18 and then played 9 on Wednesday morning as well,” said Fleetwood, following Craig’s opening 69.

"Unbelievable, keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep playing like that, he'll be just fine.”

Who is the new ‘kid’ on the Korn Ferry Tour? We found out

Miles Russell tips his cap on the 18th green during the final round of the LECOM Suncoast Classic on Sunday in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

Getty Images

ARLINGTON, Texas – Miles Russell, the 15-year-old golf whiz kid, made headlines on the Korn Ferry Tour last week — the youngest player ever to make a 36-hole cut and record a top-20 finish — but when he arrived at the Veritex Bank Championship Korn Ferry event this week, he was undone by the twin challenges of securing a rental car and locking up a housing arrangement.

“It’s good he needs me for that; they certainly don’t need me for golf,” joked his dad, Joe Russell, a Florida senior living developer, who is here this week along with caddie and longtime instructor Ramon Bescansa.

Of course, dad picked up the check for a Tuesday night dinner at a local Pappadeaux, but other than that, he was resigned to applying sunshine on the range while his son and Bescansa honed their craft next to other players, some more than twice the teen’s age.

Miles Russell, a high school freshman, finished T20 at the LECOM Suncoast Classic last week, and the top-25 finish qualified him for this week, his second Korn Ferry Tour event. He tees off at 2:43 p.m. local. A surprise? Maybe. But Russell’s list of accomplishments are longer than his slightly built 5-foot-7 frame.

The AJGA’s top-ranked junior, he broke Tiger Woods’ record as the youngest player ever to win AJGA Player of the Year and was the youngest ever to win the Junior Players Championship. He captured the Junior PGA Championship by seven shots, played in the Junior Ryder Cup and was named to the first USGA Junior National team. And don’t forget his 17 Florida Junior Golf Tournament wins and upcoming PGA Tour exemption for the fall Bermuda tournament.

Although there’s still room for improvement — at least in some areas.

“I got to get better (with autographs),” he said. “I’ve got to get a lot faster.”

With his bulky TaylorMade staff bag (with his name on it) an NIL deal and promising future, he seems like the typical modern junior golfer, although he’s old school in the fact that he refuses to wear ear buds when he warms up.

“I prefer to hear the sound of the ball coming off the club,” he said.

Several putters from the 2024 Ping putter line arranged on a golf course

Ping adds 6 new designs to 2024 putter line: Everything you need to know

Both his PGA Tournament mentor, Steve Wheatcroft, who was a member at Russell’s home course, Atlantic Beach Country Club, and Bescansa, have emphasized that no matter how bright his future is, there will be struggles along the way. Wheatcroft also taught him something that could come in handy down the road — the art of trash talk and money games.

“Weathie!” Russell said, when thinking about their sessions together. “He took some money from me and then it turned around and I took some from him.”

Added Atlantic Beach head golf pro Richard Podwalski: “Steve would dog him and trash him and make him tougher. That was his job and he did it well.”

Around Atlantic Beach, Russell’s already made a name for himself.

There was the albatross on the par-5 6th hole last summer, where he holed a 5-wood from 239 yards, only the second in recent club history. (“He was too young to buy drinks after that, so we gave him a piece of framed artwork,” Podwalski said.) He’s already shot 29 multiple times on the front nine of the par-72 course; his low is 62, and Podwalski says 59 isn’t unrealistic. And of course, they’re still talking about his shot during the annual Black Friday shootout last November.

Russell put his tee ball on the 9th directly behind a tree in the right rough, just six inches from the tree roots. No matter. He opened a 3-iron, sent the ball skyward around the tree, curved it and landed it right next to the green. The gallery was stunned; Tour players Doc Redman and Vince Covello shook their heads in amazement.

“I’ve been playing tournament golf for 30 years,” Covello said, “and that’s the greatest shot I’ve ever seen.”

It’s not uncommon to see Russell practicing alone in a bunker for hours or chipping off the cart path. Joe Russell quit playing against his son long ago, but his final match was a memorable one.

“It was the year Tiger and Phil played in The Match on TV, and we decided to have our own match as well,” he said. “He went back to the back tees (at age 11) and he beat me by 10 shots. I said that’s it, I’m done.”

Russell has even learned how to turn a rare disappointment into a positive. In 2016, he shot a six-under 30 in a U.S. Kids regional event, only to lose by a single shot to good friend Graden Lomax, who shot 29. But instead of getting bitter and losing a friendship, he got better, forming the Florida Sunshine Cup with Lomax, where elite junior players come together for a day of fundraising for local charities, including the Nicklaus Family Children’s Hospital, which has raised $300,00 in the last five years.

“It started as a dream, but it has turned out great,” Joe Russell said.

A lot like his first Korn Ferry Tour start.

Hot Oceans Worsened Dubai’s Dramatic Flooding, Scientists Say

An international team of researchers found that heavy rains were intensifying in the region, though they couldn’t say for sure how much climate change was responsible.

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions stunned the world this month. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a total surprise — forecasters had anticipated the storms several days earlier and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual.

Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers. These rains often come during El Niño conditions like the ones the world is experiencing now.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on April 16 was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . And parts of the nation had already experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms in March.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every part of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

Hot oceans are a big factor.

An international team of scientists has made a first attempt at estimating the extent to which climate change may have contributed to April’s storms. The researchers didn’t manage to pin down the connection precisely, though in their analysis, they did highlight one known driver of heavy rain in the region: above-normal ocean temperatures.

Large parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans have been hotter than usual recently, in part because of El Niño and other natural weather cycles, and in part because of human-induced warming .

When looking only at El Niño years, the scientists estimated that storm events as infrequent as this month’s delivered 10 percent to 40 percent more rain to the region than they would in a world that hadn’t been warmed by human activities. They cautioned, however, that these estimates were highly uncertain.

“Rainfall, in general, is getting more extreme,” said Mansour Almazroui, a climate scientist at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and one of the researchers who contributed to the analysis.

The analysis was conducted by scientists affiliated with World Weather Attribution, a research collaboration that studies extreme weather events shortly after they occur. Their findings about this month’s rains haven’t yet been peer reviewed, but are based on standardized methods .

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried across the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this month’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

Taylor swift's new album surprises mean a sequel to her 4-year-old disney movie has to be coming.

Taylor Swift surprised fans with 15 more songs on The Tortured Poets Department the night the album dropped, meaning that a film sequel may be coming.

  • Taylor Swift surprisingly unveiled The Anthology version of The Tortured Poets Department, which contains 15 additional songs.
  • The album's lengthy tracklist of 31 songs sets up a potential sequel to Folklore's documentary on Disney+.
  • A Tortured Poets Department film could feature special guests, like Post Malone and Florence Welch.

Anticipation was high for Taylor Swift 's eleventh studio album The Tortured Poets Department , but the singer-songwriter managed to exceed expectations with a few surprises, including a double album drop, which indicates that a sequel to Swift's 2020 film is very likely. Prior to the album's release, Swift unveiled its number of tracks and their titles, so, fans were expecting only 16 songs. However, a couple of hours after The Tortured Poets Department was added to streaming platforms, Swift announced that she had written 15 additional songs, which were subsequently added to The Anthology edition of the album and made public.

Swift's eleventh studio album has, for the most part, received positive reviews, with critics praising the artist for her songwriting and the work's emotional and complex tones and themes. Based on the album's promotion, most assumed that it would heavily focus on Swift's expert songwriting skills, so, the reviews aren't surprising. Ultimately, The Tortured Poets Department has 31 songs for fans to pick apart and listen to over and over again until they have finally processed and learned every lyric, and it seems as if Swift should have some more tricks up her sleeve regarding the album.

The Tortured Poets Department's 31-Song Surprise Sets Up Another Folklore-Style Disney+ Documentary

Folklore: the long pond studio sessions premiered on disney+ in 2020.

Following Taylor Swift's surprise drop of her eighth studio album, F olklore , in July 2020, the artist also filmed and released a supplemental documentary concert film. Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions depicted Swift performing all 17 of the songs on Folklore at Long Pond Studio in the Hudson Valley, New York, alongside her co-collaborators Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner. Swift has released several documentaries and concert movies over the years, so it would only make sense if The Tortured Poets Department got one too (hopefully, in the same format as Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions ).

Post Malone and Florence Welch, who both contributed to The Tortured Poets Department , could pop in to perform their respective songs, just like Bon Iver did in the Disney+ movie.

The Tortured Poets Department 's lengthy tracklist sets up the perfect sequel to Disney+'s Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions . With 31 songs to cover, Swift's best option for a film that could accompany her eleventh album is with low-key performances and a brief (but informative) background on each song. Of course, this would theoretically be twice as long as Swift's 2020 movie, but the artist has proven herself to be a hard and relentless worker. If anyone could pull it off, it's Swift.

There Is Only 1 Thing Missing From Taylor Swift’s Career After The Eras Tour Movie’s Success

The tortured poets department's song collaborations can repeat an exciting feature of folklore's documentary, folklore: the long pond studio sessions featured jack antonoff, aaron dessner, & bon iver.

Aside from getting to watch Taylor Swift perform all 31 of her songs from The Tortured Poets Department , a documentary film à la Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions would open the door for several surprise guests. Of course, Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, who each played a significant role in the creation of Swift's eleventh studio album, would be likely to appear. However, Post Malone and Florence Welch, who both contributed to The Tortured Poets Department , could pop in to perform their respective songs, just like Bon Iver did in the Disney+ movie.

Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions is available to stream on Disney+.

A Burlesque Family at Home

Showbiz couple angie pontani and brian newman’s high-spirited marine park house..

Portrait of Wendy Goodman

Everybody knows that we love old things,” says the burlesque artist Angie Pontani, who is showing me the exuberant, family-hand-me-down-filled Marine Park house in in Southeast Brooklyn she shares with her husband, the musician Brian Newman, and their 8-year-old daughter, Sistilia. “And if you give me something, I can’t get rid of it.”

“That was my aunt Livia’s,” Pontani notes, pointing out the armchair in the living room, “from when she got her first apartment in the ’80s.” Pontani and Newman had it reupholstered in leopard. The matching ottoman, from her aunt Norma, dates from the 1940s. The bedroom set was her parents’. The chandelier is from Grandma Mary, “who brought it back from Italy in the ’50s,” she says. “There’s also Great-grandpa Paul’s office chair from his restaurant, Casa Lido, in Trenton.”

old and new dubai tour

The dining table was her great-grandmother Sistilia’s; even their daughter’s name is an heirloom. “It’s a super-old-school name,” Pontani says. “It loosely means ‘sixth-born,’ like when they name you after a number. But it’s such a pretty name.” Some of what they have inherited were her father’s flea-market finds. “Growing up, this is one of the things that my dad would do every Sunday morning. We’d get up at five and go, and we’d just search for cool stuff.”

Pontani and Newman moved here in 2019 after living together in her apartment in Kensington. Her nephews were upstairs in the same building; family is important to Pontani. She is “100 percent Italian, born in Trenton, New Jersey,” she says, where every-one in her neighborhood was related and knew one another. Her family, she adds, “are very traditional,” but her father liked to paint and had what she describes as “extreme style,” including in home décor. She takes after him.

Pontani had always wanted to be in show business. But after a year in the acting program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, she grew bored and dropped out. While working at a Tribeca café, she met a group of performers from The Dutch Weismann, “one of the first true revival burlesque shows in the city in the mid-’90s,” she says. Pontani signed on. “The show had dancing and singing and, of course, burlesque, but I didn’t even know what it was at the time. I couldn’t have cared less about stripping, but it brought out natural skills that I didn’t know I had in terms of costuming, choreography, and production.” (She was the co-producer of the New York Burlesque Festival from 2002 to 2023.)

Newman, a trumpeter and singer from Cleveland, moved to New York in 2003. He found music gigs on Craigslist. “I did hip-hop bands, I did Latin bands, I did jazz bands — literally, any gig that had a trumpet I would take.” He met Lady Gaga while bartending at St. Jerome on the Lower East Side; she was a go-go dancer and party promoter at the time. Later, he co-produced the track “La Vie en Rose” with Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born and was also the bandleader, arranger, and trumpeter on two albums by Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett .

Newman met Pontani when he answered a Craigslist ad that said “trumpet player wanted for burlesque troupe.” But he played it so cool on their first date — a Mets game in the best seats he could buy — that she wasn’t sure it was a date. Four years later, their friend the comedian Murray Hill urged them to go out again. They married in 2013.

Now, Newman is the music director of Bruno Mars’s club, the Pinky Ring, at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. He and Pontani also have a residency in Vegas at the Nomad Library called “Brian Newman After Dark,” which Newman describes as “really a throwback to the old lounge vibes of Louis Prima in the main showroom with Frank Sinatra.”

“The biggest thing” about being a burlesque performer, Pontani says, “is this self-ownership of your sexiness, of your femininity, and you display it any way you want to in a satirical way.”

After scintillating Korn Ferry Tour start, 15-year-old Miles Russell planning out a busy summer

Miles Russell is still an amateur golfer and intends to remain so for the foreseeable future.

Russell, the 15-year-old Jacksonville Beach native who became the youngest player in history to finish among the top 20 in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event last week at the Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Open, said he will keep to his junior and amateur schedule this summer, which will be capped by defending his title in the Junior Players Championship on Labor Day weekend at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.

“That’s the plan,” he said Wednesday during a teleconference from the Veritex Bank Championship near Dallas, a tournament he’s playing thanks to his tie for 20th last week at Lakewood National. The Korn Ferry Tour gives players who finish among the top 25 a spot in the next event on the schedule. “I’m planning to play to play the rest of the summer like I planned to … a couple of junior, a couple of am events, see how it goes.”

Regardless of how Russell plays this week or any additional pro events, Russell said he’s not entertaining any thoughts of turning pro. His schedule includes events such as the Junior Players, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Junior, the Western Amateur, the North and South Amateur and a U.S. Open sectional qualifier, among other junior or amateur tournaments.

“It’s going to be a busy summer,” he said.

Russell also has a fall date on the PGA Tour: the Butterfield Bermuda Championship Nov. 14-17. Russell received an invitation to the FedEx Cup Fall tournament that will be reserved for the American Junior Golf Association Player of the Year.

Miles Russell’s ‘wild ride’

Russell will tee off at 3:43 p.m. on Thursday off No. 1 at the Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas, and at 10:08 a.m. on Friday from the 10th tee. His playing partners are Callum McNeill of Scotland (30 years old) and David Bradshaw (40).

Russell termed his last week “a wild ride,” and it’s no wonder. He first became the youngest player to ever make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour (and the third-youngest to make a cut in a PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament), then had weekend rounds of 70-66 to climb 28 spots on the leaderboard.

Russell said he’s taking great satisfaction from earning his way into the Veritex Championship after playing in the LECOM Open on a sponsor invitation.

“Earning something feels better than getting an exemption,” he said. “You know what you practiced for and what you live for and that’s what you did.”

He admitted that Sunday and Monday were exhausting days. Once he and his family knew he would finish among the top 25 while driving back to Jacksonville Beach, there were travel arrangements to be made and a new set of golf clothes to pack.

“All the emotion and excitement and adrenaline, that travel from Sunday night to Monday until I got here … it was a long, long day.”

Russell said his goals this week are the same

Russell said he likes the course and said the goal this week would be the same as last week.

“Just try to put … two good rounds together and see where that puts us compared to the cut,” he said. “If we make the cut, just try to have two more good rounds and see where that puts us.”

He said he’s been surprised by the attention for his play at Lakewood National, which comes on the heels of a string of junior golf accomplishments, such as winning the Junior Players, the Junior PGA and being named the AJGA Player of the Year, along with making the Junior Ryder Cup team and the first USGA Junior National team.

“If I had my choice I would not have any of it [the attention],” he said. “But it’s kind of what happens when you play well so you kind of got to get used to it every once in a while. Everybody’s been nice and easy to work with and hopefully it stays that way.”

Russell said being humble is in his nature.

“I think that’s kind of my personality,” he said. “I don’t like being showy with things, kind of like walking around a certain way. I like to just kind of go about my business and do my thing.”

He said he was surprised when there were autograph seekers following his final round on Sunday — admitting he needs to improve his handwriting — and said it was “really cool,” to get a shoutout on X from World Golf Hall of Fame member and fellow left-handed golfer Phil Mickelson.

“I’ve looked up to him,” he said. “Going to The Players, I always watched him.”

Russell praises caddie/teacher’s influence

Russell said his support team of parents Joe and Kelli and caddie Ramon Bescansa have helped him concentrate on golf as best he can, given sudden media requests and fan attention.

He said Bescansa, his swing instructor since he was 7 years old, is a calming influence as a caddie.

“He’s the nicest, most positive guy you’ll ever meet,” he said. “The vibes he puts off … when you’re on the golf course that’s all you need. He can flip the mood and get you going [and] his knowledge of golf is on a different level.”

Russell also predicted he won’t be the last 15-year-old to make such a splash.

“Everybody has access to a ton of stuff … launch monitors, some of the best coaches … the equipment companies are starting to help younger kids out with gloves, balls … all the stuff … having the right clubs to fit into,” he said. “Everybody’s just so talented. There’s so many ways to be good and everybody’s finding every little detail to be good at it, or try to be the best.”

Taylor Swift fans speculate her songs are about Matty Healy and Joe Alwyn – who are they?

By Caitlin O'Kane

April 19, 2024 / 1:21 PM EDT / CBS News

Taylor Swift dropped her highly-anticipated "The Tortured Poets Department" on Friday and at 2 a.m. the star surprised fans by dropping an additional 15 tracks, calling it a "double album." Fans furiously began dissecting the lyrics of the songs, trying to discern who they were about. Many speculate most songs are about her recent exes, Matt Healy and Joe Alwyn. Who are they?

Who is Joe Alwyn?

Alwyn, a 33-year-old British actor, and Swift began dating in 2016 and broke up last year while she was on her Eras tour. He is known for films like the Oscar-nominated "The Favourite" and "Mary Queen of Scots."

Swift, known for writing songs about her high-profile relationships and giving fans Easter eggs as to who they are about, has admitted to writing songs about Alwyn before. In 2022, she told Entertainment Tonight that the song "Lavender Haze" from her album "Midnights" is about wanting to stay in the "lavender haze" feeling you have when you're in love – even when it's made difficult.

"Like my relationship for six years, we've had to dodge weird rumors, tabloid stuff and we just ignore it. This song is sort of about the act of ignoring that stuff to protect the real stuff," she said.

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards

Alwyn has even contributed to Swift's albums before, under the pseudonym William Bowery, ET reports. He is credited in the track "Sweet Nothing" on "Midnights" as well as several songs on "Folklore and "Evermore," her two 2020 albums.

Swift confirmed in her documentary "Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions" that Alwyn was on those albums. He contributed to the songs "Exile," "Betty," "Champagne Problems," "Coney Island" and "Evermore" and even won a Grammy for his work.

Alwyn lives in London, so fans speculate her track "So Long To London" on "The Tortured Poets Department" is about their breakup.

After her public feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West in 2016, Swift "moved to a foreign country," she told Time Magazine during her "Person of the Year" cover interview last year. "I didn't leave a rental house for a year. I was afraid to get on phone calls." These feelings are reflected in the lyrics of the song.

Several songs on the new album are about a difficult breakup, including "Down Bad," "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys," "Fresh Out the Slammer," and " Fortnite," which features Post Malone.

Who is Matty Healy?

Healy is a member of the band 1975. He and Swift have supported each other's music throughout the years – with the pop star attending one of his concerts in 2014.

Romance rumors swirled then, and Healy said in a 2016 interview with Q Magazine that he had a "flirtation" with Swift, which gained him news coverage, but that she "wasn't a big impact" on his life, ET reports.

Healy once wore a t-shirt promoting Swift's 1989 album during a concert and Swift was photographed wearing a 1975 shirt.

When "Midnights" came out in 2021, Healy admitted his band recorded a song with Swift for the album but it didn't make the cut.

Celebrity Sightings In New York City - May 16, 2023

Then, about a month after her breakup with Alwyn, Healy attended the Eras tour in May 2023, and the pair were photographed holding hands. They were spotted together several times, but called it quits in June, ET reports.

Fans speculate her song new, "Fortnight," is about Healy because of the several blatant references to their mutual friends.

"Sometimes I wonder if you're gonna screw this up with me, But you told Lucy you'd kill yourself if I ever leave," she sings, seemingly referring to Lucy Dacus, a member of the band Boygenius.

"And I had said that to Jack about you so I felt seen, Everyone we know understands why it's meant to be," she sings in another verse, seemingly referring to her frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, who helped Swift and Healy reconnect, a source told ET.

Travis Kelce

After her brief relationship with Healy, Swift began dating Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce after he attended an Eras tour concert. Their relationship soon became a massive spectacle, with fans and media following their every move.

Swift was first seen at a Chiefs game in September 2023 and attended several other games, often bringing celebrity friends. There was much fanfare over her attendance at the  Super Bowl, which the team won . She is even attributed with  boosting sales of Kelce's jersey.

Fans speculate her new song "Alchemy" is about Kelce because the love song includes many subtle football references.

"So when I touch down, call the amateurs and cut 'em from the team," she sings.

Swift and Kelce often travel to be together and "touch down" could be a play-on-words for a football touchdown.

"These blokes warm the benches, we've been on a winning streak," she sings in another line.

"Where's the trophy? He just comes runnin' over to me," is a line that fans speculate is about Swift and Kelce embracing after his Super Bowl win.

Kim Kardashian

On "The Tortured Poets Department," there is a song called "thanK you aIMee" – stylized so the letters KIM are capitalized. Fans believe this is a blatant reference to Kim Kardashian.

Aside from referencing a "bronze spray-tanned statue," which likely refers to spray tan fan Kardashian, Swift appears to sing about the fallout after her feud with Kardashian and Kanye West, the rapper known as Ye.

Ever since Ye interrupted Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs, there has been tension between the artists that seems to have never gone away.

When Ye released a song that referenced Swift in 2016, Swift claimed she was not OK with the lyrics. But Kardashian released audio from a phone call between Swift and Ye during which Swift appears to give the rapper her blessing to mention her in the song.

"All that time you were throwin' punches, it was all for nothin'," Swift sings in "thanK you aIMee."

"I wrote a thousand songs that you find uncool, I built a legacy, which you can't undo, But when I count the scars, there's a moment of truth, That there wouldn't be this if there hadn't been you," she sings in another song.

The three appeared to have mended their rift several times, with Ye sending Swift flowers and Kardashian and Swift seen dancing during a Ye performance at an awards show. But the feud was seen to have damaged Swift's reputation – and fans believe her album "Reputation" was inspired by the fallout. In her Time interview, Swift called the scandal "a career death."

Here’s why experts don’t think cloud seeding played a role in Dubai’s downpour

With cloud seeding, it may rain, but it doesn’t really pour or flood — at least nothing like what drenched the United Arab Emirates and paralyzed Dubai, meteorologists said.

Cloud seeding, although decades old, is still controversial in the weather community, mostly because it has been hard to prove that it does very much. No one reports the type of flooding that on Tuesday doused the UAE, which often deploys the technology in an attempt to squeeze every drop of moisture from a sky that usually gives less than 4 or 5 inches (10 to 13 centimeters) of rain a year.

“It’s most certainly not cloud seeding,” said private meteorologist Ryan Maue, former chief scientist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “If that occurred with cloud seeding, they’d have water all the time. You can’t create rain out of thin air per se and get 6 inches of water. That’s akin to perpetual motion technology.”

Meteorologists and climate scientists said the extreme rainfall is akin to what the world expects with human-caused climate change, and one way to know for certain that it was not caused by tinkering with clouds is that it was forecast days in advance. Atmospheric science researcher Tomer Burg pointed to computer models that six days earlier forecast several inches of rain — the typical amount for an entire year in the UAE.

Three low-pressure systems formed a train of storms slowly moving along the jet stream — the river of air that moves weather systems — toward the Persian Gulf, said University of Pennsylvania climate scientist Michael Mann. Blaming cloud seeding ignores the forecasts and the cause, he said.

Many of the people pointing to cloud seeding are also climate change deniers who are trying to divert attention from what’s really happening, Mann and other scientists said.

“When we talk about heavy rainfall, we need to talk about climate change. Focusing on cloud seeding is misleading,” said Imperial College of London climate scientist Friederike Otto, who heads a team that does rapid attribution of weather extremes to see if they were caused by global warming or not. “Rainfall is becoming much heavier around the world as the climate warms because a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture.”

WHAT IS CLOUD SEEDING?

Clouds need tiny water or ice droplets called nuclei to make rain. The weather modification method uses planes and ground-based cannons to shoot particles into clouds making more nucleai, attracting moisture that falls as snow and rain. Usually silver iodide is used, but it can also be dry ice and other materials. The method, first pioneered in the 1940s, became popular in the U.S. West starting in the 1960s, mostly for snow.

It can’t create water from a clear sky — particles must be shot into a storm cloud that already holds moisture to get it to fall, or to fall more than it otherwise would naturally.

The desert nation of the United Arab Emirates attempted to dry out Wednesday from the heaviest rain ever recorded there after a deluge flooded out Dubai International Airport, disrupting flights through the world’s busiest airfield for international travel.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS IT?

A recent study of aerial seeding found a clear precipitation pattern on a radar that mirrored the seeding and offers evidence the method works. But exactly how effective it is remains unclear , scientists say.

The physics makes sense, but the results have been so small that scientists just can’t agree on whether it is fair to say it really works, said Maue and Mann.

Atmospheric forces are so huge and so chaotic that technically cloud seeding “is way too small a scale to create what happened,” Maue said. Extra rainfall from cloud seeding would have been minimal, both said.

WHO USES IT?

Despite not knowing its efficacy, governments in drought-stricken regions like the U.S. West and the UAE are often willing to invest in technology like seeding in the hopes of getting even a small amount of water.

Utah estimates cloud seeding helped increase its water supply by 12% in 2018, according to an analysis by the state’s Division of Water Resources. The analysis used estimates provided to them by the contractors paid to do the seeding.

Dozens of countries in Asia and the Middle East also use cloud seeding.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation spent $2.4 million last year on cloud seeding along the overtapped Colorado River. Utah recently increased its seeding budget by tenfold.

SO WHAT CAUSED THE DELUGE?

That part of the Middle East doesn’t get many storms, but when it does, they are whoppers that dwarf what people in the United States are used to, Maue said.

Huge tropical storms like this “are not rare events for the Middle East,” said University of Reading meteorology professor Suzanne Gray. She cited a recent study analyzing nearly 100 such events over the southern Arabian Peninsula from 2000 to 2020, with most in March and April, including a March 2016 storm that dropped 9.4 inches (almost 24 centimeters) on Dubai in just a few hours.

The 2021 study said “a statistically significant increase in the (whopper storms) duration over southeast Arabian Peninsula has been found, suggesting that such extreme events may be even more impactful in a warming world.”

While cloud seeding can work around the margins, it doesn’t do big things, scientists say.

“It’s maybe a little bit of a human conceit that, yeah, we can control the weather in like a Star Trek sense,” Maue, who was appointed to NOAA by then-President Donald Trump, said. “Maybe on long time scales, climate time scales, we’re affecting the atmosphere on long time scales. But when it comes to controlling individual rain storms, we are not anywhere close to that. And if we were capable of doing that, I think we would be capable of solving many more difficult problems than creating a rain shower over Dubai.”
