LORD'S: GROUND & SPECTATOR GUIDE

lord's cricket travel

Built: 1814

To describe Lord's as merely the home of cricket is arguably one of the great understatements.

The home of the most influential governors in cricket, including the lawmakers of the global game, the St John's Wood ground might generally be regarded as one of the most important single sites in all of world sport.

Bathed in history, grandeur and class, Lord's rightfully owns the label of a mecca of sport.

Cricket has been played on the current Lord's site since the early 19th century, after the Marylebone Cricket Club were formed by Thomas Lord.

Among the first notable matches played were Eton v Harrow, the first Gentleman v Players clash and the varsity game between Oxford and Cambridge.

Middlesex CCC took up residence in 1877 before the first Test match was contested between England and Australia seven years later, with the hosts winning by an innings and five runs.

The ground is littered with some of the most famous sites in cricket, including the Long Room contained within the pavilion, and Old Father Time - the weather vane located atop of the Mound Stand.

Over 100 Tests have now been hosts at Lord's, where the 2000th edition of the five-day format was played in 2011 between England and India.

As well as being the main home of the England team, Lord's also houses a host of key governing bodies including the England and Wales Cricket Board and the MCC.

FAMOUS MOMENT

Of the four World Cup finals held at Lord's, none is more infamous than the 1975 showcase which saw West Indies prevail against Australia.

The defining image of the game came with three overs left when Windies fans climbed over the boundary role, prematurely celebrating victory during the Australian chase, with play continuing with dozens remaining on the outfield.

Lord’s cricket ground has launched a series of new tour experiences hosted by a former cricketer. With the Cricket World Cup coming to the UK this summer what better time to go behind the scenes at the home of cricket.

The Players’ Dining Room Experience incorporates a three-course meal in the same room where international cricketers dine on match days, and a traditional tour of the ground.

Following the success of this experience, there will now be an exciting new option, whereby a former cricketer will host the event, and share their memories of playing at Lord’s.

The Hosted Players’ Dining Room Experience includes a three-course lunch of homemade soup, a choice of four main dishes and two dessert options, plus drinks, all in the Players’ Dining Room. The three hour experience is priced at £200 per person.

The new Beyond the Boundary tour is an unforgettable experience that steps into places where no tour has gone before, following the footsteps of the famous player’s walk from the dressing room and on to the hallowed Lord’s turf.

Hosted by a former player, this tour will give a unique insight into what it is like to play at the Home of Cricket. This three hour experience includes a drinks reception and is priced at £250 per person.

Also new to Lord’s, there will now be the chance to meet, dine and walk with a cricket great in The Hat-Trick ; the ultimate cricket experience combining the Players’ Dining Room and the walk on to the outfield, with a former cricketer sharing their stories along the way.

The Hat-Trick is priced at £350 per person, includes a three-course meal in the Players’ Dining Room as well as a drinks reception. This experience lasts four hours

The home of English Cricket. Not only is it the largest Cricket Ground in England it also hosts the English National Team as well as the county side Middlesex. Over the years it’s been through a lot of changes/renovations but it’s spirit has remained the same since it was founded in 1814.

Ground Guide by Cricket Tripper

More commonly known just as ‘Lord’s’ or referred to as ‘the home of cricket’, was named after its founder Thomas Lord. Situated in the English capital of London, it is home to many organisations including Marylebone Cricket Club, Middlesex County Cricket Club, the England and Wales Cricket Board, the European Cricket Council and, until August 2005, the International Cricket Council. Despite being home to the oldest sports museum the Lord’s ground is not on its original site – there were three with that name in different locations beforehand. The reason for the relocation of the ground in 1811 to the second location was due to rent increases.

The ground can hold 30,000 spectators. As of December 2013, the ground started a 14-year redevelopment scheme costing £200 million. The historic landmark of the Pavilion is the main survivor from the Victorian era and will be maintained in this new redevelopment. From 2004 to 2005 this Grade II listed building was refurbished for £8 million, to be used for members of Middlesex County Cricket Club including special viewing of the pitch, multiple bars and a members’ shop. The players also use the Pavilion to get change and use a small balcony to watch the game when they are not playing.

Another unique feature of the Lord’s Cricket Ground is the Media Centre. ommissioned in time for the 1999 Cricket World Cup and awarded the RIBA Stirling Prize for architecture, it was the first all-aluminium, semi-monocoque building in the world. This method of architecture refers to the buildings ‘single shell’ that is reinforced with frames that are riveted to the skin, originally used in building boats. he lower tier of the centre provides accommodation for over 100 journalists, and the top tier has radio and television commentary boxes. The centre’s only opening window is in the broadcasting box used by BBC Test Match Special.

One of the most well-known and distinctive features of the Lord’s Cricket Ground is the field itself. With its significant slope – the north-west side of the playing surface is 2.5 metres (8 ft 2 ins) higher than the south-east side – the ball can deviate in bounce, making it easier to move the ball into the right-handed batsmen when bowling from the Pavilion End and vice versa. Like other English fields, the Lord’s field has resulted in considerable loss of play due to rainfall, especially in the outfield. This was partially solved from 2002 to 2003 with the relaying of clay soil.

Despite Lord’s reputation of an international cricket ground, it still faces the problems of the modern world. Its situation in London means that light pollution can affect local residents. In 2009, Westminster City Council approved the use of retractable floodlights to combat light spillage into the nearby homes. These lights come with rules of an 11 pm curfew and 9:50 pm dimming to half lights.

This cricket ground has so much history, yet is keeping up with the 21st century, making it one of the most famous cricket grounds in the world.

Visiting the Ground - Travel

Stadium map.

Lord’s Cricket Ground is in the heart of London which is bad news for drivers but great news for tube lovers.

The satnav postcode is NW8 8QN however the ground encourages no one to drive. Driving in London can be a nightmare at the best of times, so trying to get to Lords on a matchday will be difficult, though not impossible. The nearest car park is at Kingsmill Terrace NW8 6AA but spaces run out quickly. St John’s Wood is mainly permit only parking so be careful about where you park if all the car parks are full.

Train - Public Transport

The nearest main line railway station is Marylebone which is just 10 minutes walk from the ground. But honestly, Euston, King’s Cross and St Pancras would all be suitable train stations to use as they are only a tube journey away.

The nearest tube station is St John’s Wood which is just 5 minutes away on the Jubilee line. Baker Street, Warwick Avenue, Marylebone and Edgware Road are all about 15 – 20 minute walk from the ground as well, so there are plenty of options no matter what tube line is available to you.

The closest Airport is Heathrow and is just under an hour tube journey to the ground, making it ideal if you are an overseas day tripper. Other London airports would also be okay to use if you can only get flights from Gatwick or Stansted, as they are connected to the great London travel network. Stansted will take about 1 hour 30 mins, and Gatwick is just over a 1-hour train/ tube journey.

The historic Lord's Cricket Ground will have its capacity raised by 1100 as part of a $128 million project to redevelop the Tavern and Allen stands.

Plans for the upgrades to the ground have been approved by the 18,000 members of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), a statement said.

"The redevelopment of the Tavern and Allen stands will complete our stand development programme, in which we have modernised facilities at Lord's to continue to ensure the Ground remains a world-class venue for cricket," Robert Ebdon, MCC estates director, said.

The existing Allen Stand, dating back to the 1930s, will be demolished entirely, with the new structure having an extra tier, while the Tavern Stand will get a new cantilevered fourth floor seating level above the retained existing structure.

The MCC say the existing steel structure of the Tavern Stand will be retained in keeping with its sustainability commitments, saving 613 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

The new roof, designed by architects WilkinsonEyre, is inspired by the shape and ribbed construction of a series of upturned traditional slip cradles - the piece of equipment players use for catching practice.

Construction is expected to start in September at the end of the current season with completion in 2027.

There will be pauses for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Lord’s to increase capacity in £62m revamp after bumper summer

The architects have released impressions of how the ground will look after development finishes by the summer of 2027

Lord’s will increase its capacity by 1,100 seats in a £61.8million development of the Tavern and Allen Stands after planning approval was granted by Westminster council.

It is the latest stage in the Lord’s “development masterplan” process which initially began with the upgrading of the Compton and Edrich Stands at the Nursery End of the ground and the refurbishment of the Warner Stand, which is adjacent to the pavilion.

The developments to the Tavern and Allen Stands will increase the capacity at the Home of Cricket from 31,100 to 32,200. The improvements also include new hospitality facilities, restaurants and bars.

MCC members were briefed about the development at their AGM two weeks ago, along with an update on MCC’s financial status, which is very healthy

Graham, the Hillsborough, Co Down-headquartered civil engineering and construction group, has been named as the preferred bidder for a contract to undertake a major redevelopment of the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the owner of the stadium, which celebrates its 210th anniversary this year, will work with Graham on the project, which will add at least 1,100 additional seats through the repurposing of the Tavern Stand, along with the demolition of the Allen Stand to be replaced with a modern version.

“We are thrilled to embark on this transformative project at Lord’s Cricket Ground,” said Rob Joyce, development director at Graham. “Our partnership with MCC will deliver world-class sporting infrastructure while preserving the rich heritage of this historic venue. Together, we aim to enhance the members’ and public spectator experience, expand capacity, and usher in a new era at the home of cricket.”

Graham, which generated revenues in excess of £1 billion (€1.2 billion) last year across the group, said Lord’s will remain open during the redevelopment, “ensuring minimal disruption and continued spectator access during the 2025 and 2026 seasons”.

Tentative trial date for 7 suspects arrested in Preston Lord’s murder set for July 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A tentative trial date has been set for seven suspects arrested for the murder of Preston Lord.

Treston Billey, Talan Renner , William Owen Hines, Talyn Vigil, Dominic Turner, Taylor Sherman, Jacob Meisner and their lawyers appeared before a judge on Thursday morning to discuss a trial date. All are being charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping . Billey, Meisner and Turner are also facing aggravated robbery charges.

Judge Bruce R. Cohen initially asked for a trial in May 2025, but defense lawyers disagreed. A date was set for next summer, July 21, 2025. However, the judge explained the court date set during Thursday’s hearing could change depending how the case plays out.

Judge Cohen also addressed concerns regarding the timeline of the trial.

“Some people may think, ‘how is that even possible that it could take that long?’ It does, and it’s not just this case. There’s many cases that take a long period of time based on the amount of evidence there is and the work that has to be done to prepare. It certainly makes things more complicated when there are multiple defendants because each defendant’s rights could impact the rights or case of another defendant. It’s not that unusual,” he explained.

Lawyers for the seven suspects and Judge Cohen came to a consensus that a trial in October or November of this year would be “unrealistic” based on the thousands of photos and video evidence to comb through. “I received over 400 videos. Many, many hundreds of gigabytes,” one lawyer said. “It’s hard for me to imagine that we’d be ready to try this case in under a year,” another lawyer added.

Vigil’s lawyer argued that a trial date could be two to three years down the line, but Judge Cohen disagreed.

“Today what I’ll be doing is setting a more viable trial date so we have it. It’s a target, but for everyone to understand I’m not assigning the word “firm” to it. I realize that there are many moving pieces to any case, this one included. We’ll address it as we move forward,” he explained. “I don’t know if two years is necessary, but I know this fall is unrealistic.”

Trial date set for next summer but sounds like judge is open to move the date. July 21st, 2025. — David Caltabiano (@DavidCaltabiano) May 9, 2024

At the beginning of the hearing, the attorney for Renner initially argued to ban media cameras from inside the courtroom, but Judge Cohen struck down the defendant’s objection. Renner’s attorney replied, “I feel like I have a 50-caliber weapon pointed at me.”

However, Judge Cohen ruled cameras were not permitted to show the defendant’s faces. Defense lawyers argued that showing the suspects in orange jumpsuits and handcuffs would taint the jury’s image.

“I feel like I have a 50 caliber weapon pointed at me,” Talan Renner attorney referring to media camera - arguing against cameras for #PrestonLord murder case. #azfamily — David Caltabiano (@DavidCaltabiano) May 9, 2024

The seven suspects previously pleaded not guilty to all counts. Meisner and Hines are facing additional charges in other unrelated ambush-style attacks targeting teens.

Lord was beaten outside of a Halloween party last October and died two days later at the hospital Court documents revealed that none of the suspects knew Lord before the night of the beating.

A gold chain that was stolen from Lord’s friend also led to a fight, where Lord was brutally beaten by the group. When police arrived at the scene, Lord was unconscious and had injuries on his face and the back of his head.

Just last week, officials announced that the “Gilbert Goons” met the criteria for a legal criminal street gang . Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell previously told Arizona’s Family her office will look into additional information and decide whether they should go back and add charges or file enhancements. Still, police at the time said they would not seek out additional charges at this time.

Moscow extends a warm welcome to Indian travellers with enhanced infrastructure and hidden gems

Russia actively promoting moscow as a tourist destination for indian travellers, improving infrastructure and visa process..

Russia is making an active bid to attract Indian travellers to visit Moscow -- a huge megalopolis and the historical, political and spiritual heart of the Russian Federation. The Moscow City Tourism Committee is promoting the city not only as a cultural capital but also as a business hub as it plans to onboard trade partners, tourists and vacationers. Moscow has also strengthened cooperation with the tourism sectors of allied nations, hosting familiarization tours for delegates and arranging business trips to showcase the city's tourism potential.

Travelling to Moscow has now become easier as tourists from India and 54 other countries can apply for an electronic visa to enter Russia from August 1, 2023. (Unsplash)

To accommodate visitors, Moscow is improving its infrastructure: signs are now available in English and Chinese, all announcements on public transport are repeated in English, and hotels are also adapting to cater to the needs of guests from various countries and ensure a comfortable stay. "We are still on our way to restore the flow of Indian tourists in Moscow like it used to be before the pandemic," said Bulat Nurmukhanov, Head of International Cooperation Division of Moscow City Tourism Committee.

Bulat further said that before the pandemic, there was a steady growth of 12-15 per cent on a year-on-year basis. In the first half of the year, Moscow received about 20,000 Indians, compared to the same period a year ago, it is about 56 per cent higher. In a bid to make Moscow a must-visit destination, the committee is actively working on improving the infrastructure for international travellers. Moscow is spearheading the development of innovative standards in catering to the needs of foreign travellers.

Tourists arriving in the capital can stay in hotels of various price segments. They can savour traditional Russian cuisine, and can also indulge in a diverse culinary experience, with options ranging from authentic Indian delicacies to continental dishes prepared to the highest standards. In 2022, the number of foreign tourists who visited Moscow increased by 6.3 per cent compared to 2021, reaching a total of 1.7 million.

Travelling to Moscow has now become easier as tourists from India and 54 other countries can apply for an electronic visa to enter Russia from August 1, 2023. The impact of e-visa rollout would be available by October this year after the quarterly data from the Russian border control agencies is analysed, Bulat said.

Moreover, the Russian government is planning to come out with a virtual 'Foreign Tourist Card' that will enable cashless payments for various services. "The idea behind this card is, a person back home in India can remotely apply for this card and then he/she can transfer money from the personal bank account to this bank account," Bulat added.

Meanwhile, sources in the Indian Embassy in Moscow told reporters that the Indian tourism ministry as well as the governments of Goa and Kerala are slated to participate in roundtable discussions this month. There are also plans to engage social media influencers to improve the inward traffic to India. Before the pandemic, around 3 lakh Russian tourists visited India annually. The numbers are down to around 80,000-90,000 of late.

To facilitate easy visitor movement across the city, there is "Discover Moscow" -- a navigation and travel web portal about Moscow and "RUSSPASS travel service" -- a digital platform designed for planning trips across Russia. The Discover Moscow portal features descriptions of over 1,200 architectural landmarks in Moscow. The site provides news, digests with festival and event information and curated lists of exhibition venues.

By availing the RUSSPASS travel service, tourists can access all essential information for a trip to Moscow on the site, including visa and currency matters, accommodation and transportation options in the capital. The site also offers a trip builder feature, allowing tourists to select pre-designed city routes or create their own itinerary from their favourite locations. There are versions of the site in Russian, English, Spanish and Arabic.

On the cultural scene, Moscow boasts 10,000 cultural venues including theaters, museums, libraries, parks, cinemas, concert halls, and more. In the last decade, around 900 parks and green spaces have been renovated.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
