Louis Theroux has said that when got his first on-screen gig, on the satirical 1994 series TV Nation , documentarian Michael Moore hired him because “the level of incompetence that I brought to the job was, for him, a big plus… he realised this bookish English person, when contrasted with a Ku Klux Klansman or a Millenarian cult member in Montana, was quite funny”.

Moore is the one who taught the twenty-something Theroux, who is now turning 50, to go after “slightly dodgy people” and be very polite and disarming, all while searching for comedy in everything they said. It’s an approach Theroux has largely maintained throughout his career; his unique brand of bumbling, placid interviewing has won him numerous Baftas and international fame.

Some of his films are impossibly moving. Others are so ludicrously funny they’ve spawned countless memes and a Twitter account called "No Context Louis Theroux".

To mark the release of his latest documentary Louis Theroux’s Forbidden America on Sunday (13 February), here are seven of his most brilliant documentaries…

The Most Hated Family in America (2007)

BBC iPlayer

This lid-lifting documentary introduces viewers to the Kansas family at the core of the Westboro Baptist Church, whose members believe the US government is immoral due to its tolerance of homosexuality.

  • Tiger King: Louis Theroux says he ‘liked’ Joe Exotic
  • Louis Theroux launches first podcast series from coronavirus lockdown
  • BBC defends Louis Theroux documentary from damning claims

The hugely controversial Christian ministry is notorious for picketing at military funerals with homophobic placards, claiming that soldiers were killed because "God hates" gay people.

It’s an extremely uncomfortable watch, like much of Theroux’s best work, and a topic that has been revisited twice by the filmmaker in 2011’s America’s Most Hated Family in Crisis and 2019’s Surviving America’s Most Hated Family.

Extreme Love: Dementia (2012)

This is one of Theroux’s most heart-rending documentaries, in which he interviews dementia sufferers and their loved ones. In it, we meet a 49-year-old mother who is unable to grasp the seriousness of her own deterioration, and whose husband is anxious about raising their young daughter alone.

There are moments of lightness, too, with a mischievous 89-year-old called Nancy teasing and flirting with Theroux in some of her more lucid moments.

It doesn’t have the shock factor of some of his most famous films, but it’s a poignant insight into how love can endure such a devastating condition.

Altered States: Love Without Limits (2018)

This film sees Theroux head off to Portland, Oregon, to investigate polyamory. It is 60 minutes of perfect awkwardness.

Three groups of people of varying willingness to be in open relationships are interviewed, and at one point Theroux strips off and attends a naked “sensual eating workshop”.

That is all.

Drinking to Oblivion (2016)

Amazon Prime Video

In this staggeringly moving watch, Theroux embeds himself at King’s College Hospital in south London, where he interviews patients whose alcoholism is so severe that it has put them at death’s door.

Joe, who is on his third day of detox, is one of the most memorable addicts featured. When we meet him, he’s spent the last few months drinking a bottle or two of vodka a day and is in withdrawal, petrified and hardly able to stand.

From 32-year-old Joe to a woman who’s been on eight cans of cider a day for the past three decades, the subjects are very varied in an astonishing film that gives a face to an addiction suffered by half a million people in England.

A Place for Paedophiles (2009)

Theroux gains incredible access in this unsettling film shot in California’s Coalinga Mental Hospital. More than 500 convicted paedophiles are housed in the institution, many of whom have already served prison sentences but are deemed too dangerous for release.

One of the sex offenders there has undergone castration in an attempt to secure his release, while another confessed to molesting 50 children.

At the time, Theroux said Coalinga was “the weirdest place” he had “ever been to”, which, coming from a man who has spent time with Nazis, Scientologists and Tiger King ’s Joe Exotic, is quite a statement.

Louis and the Nazis (2003)

This is one of Theroux’s most famous documentaries. It sees the filmmaker travel to California to spend time with the White Aryan Resistance, a group that includes 11-year-old twin sisters who have been taught to sing racist pop songs by their mother.

It’s one of the rare films that shows Theroux almost lose his temper. When he comes face to face with the people who are perpetuating so much hatred, he doesn’t look shy or confused as he often does, instead he is genuinely raging.

Weird Christmas (1998)

In this left-field festive special, Theroux brings together four of the characters he met during his Weird Weekends series to pull crackers with him in his Brooklyn apartment.

From a man who claims to channel messages from the alien planet Koldas to another who spent 28 years living in a hole in Idaho, it’s an eclectic mix of guests. The show will put any chaotic Christmas dinners you’ve had into perspective.

Louis Theroux’s Forbidden America airs Sunday 13 February at 9pm on BBC Two.

Louis theroux's 10 must-watch documentaries.

Louis Theroux has become a household name for his documentaries. Of them all, these are the ten you HAVE to see.

Louis Theroux has become a household name throughout his career for creating some of the most exciting, educational and downright hilarious documentaries of all time. His combination of sincerity and sheer awkwardness mixed with the wild topics that he covers make for very fun content.

Theroux has followed some incredibly interesting storylines throughout his career from his Weird Weekend series to looking into some more serious topics. Theroux always manages to get his audience to engage in whatever subject he is covering, regardless of how serious or wild the topic is.

RELATED:  The 10 Best Documentaries On Disney Plus (According To IMDb)

The documentaries are always thought-provoking and can range from being almost comedic to incredibly emotional, with everything in between. Within this list, we will reveal the ten Louis Theroux documentaries that you must see at some point.

The Most Hated Family In America

We will kickstart the list with one of Louis Theroux's most well-known documentaries, which is a look at the most hated family in America. The family in question is one at the core of the Westboro Baptist Church group, who often demonstrate on the streets against homosexuality.

They aren't ones to mince their words and they have no problems telling Louis exactly how they feel about every question he asks. The original documentary was so popular that Louis has since followed it up, meaning fans can enjoy watching the group grow and how their opinions alter or don't.

Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends-Wrestling

Next on the list is a documentary from Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends series, which saw him go away to experience different situations each time. One of the best of the bunch is when he experiences the world of professional wrestling, taking a look at the former company, World Championship Wrestling.

RELATED:  10 Athletes Who Deserve Netflix Documentaries

Louis gives a detailed behind the scenes look at the crazy world of wrestling, which is fascinating. But the biggest highlight of this episode is when he goes to do a tryout. Louis is pushed to his absolute limits by Sarge, to the point where he throws up as Sarge pushes him way past his comfort zone.

Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends-Porn

Another of Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends that is certainly a must-watch is his look at the porn industry. It is such a taboo subject that it is interesting to see the topic be focused on in such a major way, with Louis not holding anything back here.

Looking into the lives of several porn stars, Louis learns about issues such as "wood problems" and disease worries. It covers the subject very well and while it certainly brings some of Louis best awkward moments for the laughs, it does bring up many interesting matters about the subject that often don't get considered.

Louis And The Brothel

Following on from the porn category, Louis Theroux has also covered brothels in a lengthy documentary that really does provide some hilarious moments for the viewer. The moment he gets a massage within the brothel itself is one of the funniest moments from any of his documentaries.

RELATED:  10 Best Documentaries On Living Sustainably

However, even though this is one of the funnier documentaries that he has done, it is also a very interesting one. He gives a brilliant insight into this world, which is one that most people don't know about which is what makes this a very fun watch.

Louis Theroux's Weird Christmas

This documentary is another hilarious one from Louis Theroux's Weird Weekend's series, which wraps up the first season perfectly. Within this episode, Louis looks to celebrate Christmas by bringing in all of his main guests from the previous episodes together as one.

The episode sees some hilarious moments take place as each individual who joins Louis has completely different opinions and they don't always go together. Louis takes them to visit several other places, including a hilarious moment where someone pretends to be taken over by an alien, talking to them all as they struggle to hold back the laughter.

Louis Theroux Extreme Love: Dementia

On the flip side to some of Louis Theroux's funnier documentaries, he also tackles some really emotional and heavy topics during his time. One of those examples is when he looks into dementia, visiting people who suffer from it and their family members, as well as doctors and nurses who work within this field.

RELATED:  10 Best UFO Documentaries On Netflix Right Now

It's an incredibly heartbreaking and sad documentary, seeing just how brutal this particular illness can be. However, it's also a fantastic example of showing how well Louis can deal with more serious topics, aside from his wilder ones.

Louis And The Nazis

Covering a subject as sensitive as the Nazis is never an easy thing to do, but it is something that Louis Theroux does extremely well within this documentary. Here he meets white supremacist Tom Metzger, who is the founder of the White Arya Resistance. The group was rumored to be involved in the murder of a 28-year-old Ethiopian student.

He also goes to see a family that are homeschooled by their mother, who lets them draw Swastikas freely. It is interesting to see him in a situation as serious as this, tackling the difficult issues. He handles the entire documentary expertly, allowing them to have their time to really express their feelings about why they do what they do.

Louis Theroux Miami Mega Jail: Part 1/2

This is technically a two-for-one situation, however, Louis Theroux's Miami Mega Jail series really are tremendous.  Spending time behind bars in Miami's famous prison, Louis takes a detailed look at the positives and negatives of the system in place.

RELATED:  Martin Scorsese's Music Documentaries Ranked Worst To Best (According To IMDb)

Focusing on both the guards and the prisoners, he gives a balanced look at the entire situation. It really is an interesting documentary that provides fantastic detail from start to finish, and the fact that there are two parts to this helps to add the necessary detail to the subject matter.

My Scientology Movie

The world of Scientology is certainly a controversial one, but it one that people are incredibly interested in because it is shrouded in mystery. This is why Louis Theroux's My Scientology Movie is so incredibly interesting. Louis does a brilliant job of delving into this world within the movie, trying to get all the information needed.

It gives a better insight into this world than any other documentary has done before. With Louis butting heads with members of the religion, with some major arguments taking place as he tries to get as close as possible, he really does push the boundaries and in the best way possible.

When Louis Met Jimmy

This is arguably Louis Theroux's most well-known documentaries, and sadly not for the best of reasons. Because of Jimmy Savile's behaviour and the revelations that came to air after his death, many people have gone back to watch this documentary to point out many of the issues.

This was a documentary that actually troubled Louis Theroux when Savile's horrendous crimes came to light. So much so that Louis actually did another documentary on the subject matter, proving just how dedicated he is as a journalist to make sure that he covered the truth in as much detail as possible.

Theroux with Anthim Gionet, more widely known as the far-right internet troll Baked Alaska.

Louis Theroux’s Forbidden America review – a terrifying meeting with the new far right

Rape threats and racism feature in this alarming encounter with white nationalists who spread hate online while denying they’re fascists. Might this documentary do more harm than good?

N ick J Fuentes, the 23-year-old founder of the America First Foundation, wants there to be no more immigration to the US. “White men founded this country. It wouldn’t exist without white men and white men are done being bullied … Genocide is being perpetrated against the white man.” He thinks women should stay in the home. “They have been convinced it’s dignified to abandon your children – literally out of their womb – and go work in an office, go work for a corporation. How sick is that?” He thinks they shouldn’t have the vote either, “but that’s probably not going to land soon”. Articulate, charismatic and convincing, he has built a substantial following, beginning with the online gaming community, and now, spreading outward from there, holds his own rallies. He also wants to be president.

The most terrifying part of this opening episode of Louis Theroux’s new three-part documentary series, Forbidden America (BBC Two) , is that by the end of it you can see no reason why he could not be. Theroux’s latest outing is – for all the compelling interviews that abound – really about the tentacular reach and spectacular, unprecedented power of the internet (alongside whatever else it has brought us); its ability to politicise, radicalise, give voice to would-be demagogues and hatemongers who would once have had their influence naturally curtailed by time and distance, encourage the worst in humanity and then unite people on that basis.

Theroux – more carefully and slightly more forcefully than usual – interviews Fuentes and other prominent figures of the latest incarnation of the far right in the US at length. It builds, as the best of his work does, into a vision of the whole that is more revelatory even than its individual parts. And when the individual parts are as forthcoming as the likes of Fuentes, Anthime Gionet (more commonly known as livestreamer and self-described internet troll Baked Alaska) and Beardson Beardly (real name Matt Evans, and considered by the movement to be Fuentes’ “general”), that’s some bar to hit.

There is a maelstrom of sentiments such as: “You think [immigrants] really like white people? They want to kill you”; “Stop acting like a Black woman. Black women are obnoxious”; and “Brittany, if I ever see you, I’m gonna rape you in person”. Combined with footage of anti-semitic chanting, signs emerge of the group coalescing round certain valuable – to them – goals. Moving the window of acceptable political discourse is one of them, so they flinch at any suggestion from Theroux that they are white nationalists or neo-Nazis. Far right? “Probably, yes,” says Baked Alaska. Because, he explains, white people should stand up for themselves and the US should stay majority white, but he doesn’t support slavery. Beardson Beardly twice gave something that looked indistinguishable from a Nazi salute as he left a rally with Fuentes but “I’m not a white nationalist … I’m a gamer”.

They still have work to do on themselves and their comms. When Theroux pushes them on their far-right politics, they almost always retreat first behind humour (there’s a reason “irony-bros” has become a recognised term), then become defensive, verbally abusive and frequently take to their shows or YouTube channels to denounce him as a “pretentious” member of the mainstream media with “a gay agenda” and so on. But if they are individually fragile, together they are increasingly strong. Which is, one presumes, a large part of the attraction.

Ever since Theroux in effect made the Westboro Baptist Church famous – on his most recent visit, he met people who had been prompted to join the notoriously and aggressively homophobic sect after they saw his documentary about it – the question of whether he (or anyone) should be drawing attention to extremists and potentially giving them access to new audiences has been particularly pertinent. For my money, in the case of the far-right movement (or the rise of neo-fascism, or whatever else you want to call it, depending on how gay your agenda is, I suppose), increasing general public awareness of how it’s gaining ground – and Theroux gave more context and analysis to his interviewees’ practices than usual here – and how far it has got, is likely to do more good than harm. But maybe “likely” is doing too much work there.

When Theroux interviewed Brittany Venti, one of the rare women involved in the bros’ work and the recipient of the above rape threat, she said she had assumed most of what they said was tongue-in-cheek. But when they turned on her, she realised the misogyny (“They say all women are whores”) was real rather than ironic. She has not yet extrapolated further, still making light of anti-semitic footage and although mixed race herself, apparently unperturbed from the beginning by the racism that is central to the cause. It makes the question of whether documentary-makers should amplify the far right’s message both harder – and more pressing.

“His calm, non-confrontational approach is very different to many journalists and documentary-presenters and is proof that there is more than one way to get to the bottom of the issue.

“As with previous Keynote events, we expect people to be queuing round the block to secure their seat for An Audience with Louis Theroux.

“It’s proof that, when you come to World Travel Market, you not only set yourself up for a years’ worth of business deals, but you leave having had a great time and feeling inspired.”

Louis Theroux: Drinking To Oblivion

Dec 9, 2023 | Drugs , Health , Social , Videos

louis theroux travel documentary

Drinking To Oblivion is a powerful new documentary by Louis Theroux, released in 2020. It takes viewers into the lives of individuals who are struggling with extreme alcohol addiction in the United Kingdom. Through his time spent at King’s College Hospital in South London, Louis delves deep into the world of alcohol dependency and attempts to understand the mindset behind its sufferers.

Alcohol is one of the most commonly abused substances in Britain, and yet many are unaware of just how severe it can be for those who become addicted. Drinking To Oblivion offers an eye-opening insight into this issue. One particularly heartbreaking example is Joe, a 32-year-old man whose alcoholism had led him to be admitted to hospital with serious health issues. Despite being given a stark warning that drinking could possibly kill him, Joe still leaves the hospital and heads for vodka – emphasizing just how hard it can be for some people to free themselves from their addiction.

The film also shows us why some people become trapped by alcohol dependency in the first place – it’s not as simple as ‘just stopping drinking’ for them. We see individuals and their families struggle through difficult decisions regarding their addictions all while battling through feelings of guilt and despair.

Drinking To Oblivion addresses an issue which has previously been largely overlooked – one which requires more attention than ever before. If you’re looking to learn more about alcohol addiction or even if you simply want to watch a captivating documentary then you should definitely check out Drinking To Oblivion – you won’t regret it!

LOUIS THEROUX is making a star-studded documentary looking at the rise and fall of boy bands.

The three-parter from his Mindhouse production company will air on the BBC this year and delve into the controversies that surrounded the phenomenon.

Louis Theroux is making a star-studded documentary

Producers have already contacted Coree Richards, the hellraiser ousted from Damage, the R&B group that included Jade Jones who went on to marry Spice Girl Emma Bunton .

They’ve also been in touch with former EastEnder Danniella Westbrook who dated Brain Harvey, the troubled lead singer of EAST 17.

A TV insider said: “It’s obvious Louis and his team intend to delve into the dark underbelly of bubblegum pop. They will focus on the golden era of boy bands in the Nineties and early Noughties. But given the thorny topics his production company has already tackled it was never going to be a gentle, nostalgic wander.”

Its shows have looked at the darker side of snooker and tennis and probed the Columbia space shuttle and Lockerbie disasters.

So approaching the lives of popstars ranging from Take That and 5IVE to Boyzone and Westlife who had a 2005 No1 with You Raise Me Up — should be a walk in the park.

But given the volume of sensational stories involving drink, drugs, bust-ups and exploitation, the biggest challenge is likely to be fitting it all into three episodes.

There are clues as to who else might feature — on Instagram Louis follows Simon Webbe from Blue, Robbie Williams and East 17’s Brian

Surely Louis will have to do a sequel on girl groups?
