Madonna

Hello, Brooklyn. Is Madonna in the house? It’s after 10 p.m. on Wednesday night, and the Material Girl is nowhere to be found on the first hometown stop of her career-retrospective “Celebration” tour.

Popular on Variety

The vibe inside the Barclays Center had started off with puffs of pot smoke and Fire Island-circuit, party-ready club music curated by DJ Honey Dijon. Costumed fans decked out in glitter, Madonna T-shirts, hoodies and even a “Like a Virgin” wedding dress grew increasingly impatient. It’s a power move for a stadium artist to keep his or her concert-goers waiting … and waiting … and waiting, and it’s certainly one that Madonna is (in)famous for. But this isn’t the ’90s, and New York is no longer the city that never sleeps. People were starting to get drowsy. Those gummies had started to kick in.

Finally, at 10:45 p.m., the evening’s host, Bob the Drag Queen, sauntered onstage in a pink Marie Antoinette-like ruffled gown. As he invited fans to travel back to 1978 New York City, with “Madonna at 19 years old,” he declared, “This is not just a show. This is not just. This is not just a partttty. It’s a celebration, bitches!”

Photos: Ricardo Gomez

The song, and the dance, felt apt: Madonna may have dodged fate only very recently. She addressed the bacterial infection in a rambling speech to fans, between songs, early on, standing next to an actor dressed as Madonna, meant to represent her as a young woman.

“Oh my god,” the real Madonna said. “It’s so great to be back in New York. You have no idea. The enthusiasm, the joy, it’s just coming out of my pores. It’s amazing. Touch me right now. Please someone, touch me.” Madonna, at 65, looked at her younger doppelganger. “Touch me. Yes. Thank you. So uh — the relief. People can speak my language, the language of c–t! Uh, I don’t know where to begin. First of all, no one is more surprised that I have made it this far than me. Yeah, four decades, motherfuckers! And I got to tell you, I didn’t think I was going to make it this summer, but here I am. Thank you for having me. Thank you for standing by me, for your support, your love.

“You don’t understand — the love from a New Yorker is like making a big fat smelly rat come up to you and put your arms around you: ‘I made it.’ I’m not comparing you guys to rats,” she continued. “I know that sounded weird. First of all — I mean, fifth of all, I want you to meet myself. Have you met myself? She was little bit shy back in the day. Let’s see if she’s ticklish.” The real Madonna poked the other Madonna, hugged her, and then seemed peeved to be sharing the spotlight, so she ordered her to sit down.

Madonna, after all, doesn’t co-headline with anyone — not even herself. But for all that she’s changed music, she may, today, be chasing the descendants her fame helped create. “The Celebration Tour” is coming at the end of the year defined by three other superstar artists on the road — Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour, which became the first concert in history to gross $1 billion globally; Beyonce’s “Renaissance”; and SZA’s “SOS” tour. In all honesty, “The Celebration Tour” doesn’t fall in the same league as those transcendent fan experiences — and it’s also no match for Madonna’s greatest concert of this century, 2005’s “Confessions” tour, based on her tenth studio album “Confessions on a Dance Floor.”

But Madonna is still Madonna, and that’s probably enough even if the “Celebration” show doesn’t always stick the landing. Throughout the night, there are too many costume changes to count, yet Madonna is best when she puts the music front and center, focusing on her vocals instead of trying to outdance her competition. The booming acoustics inside the Barclays Center may have also thrown her off her game, as Madonna asked fans if they could hear her, and she complained at one point, “It’s an echo bowl in here.”

It’s enough to make you pine for a time when New Yorkers could really stay out all night dancing to Madonna on a weeknight. At least, among those willing to wait to be transported, the indestructible Madonna could give us a ride in her time machine.

Madonna’s ‘Celebration Tour’: The NYC Opening Night Experience

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bradley Stern (@muumuse)

L-U-V, Madonna !

After spending several months touring around Europe, the Queen of Pop™ has finally made her way stateside to kick off the North American leg of the Celebration Tour at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where she’ll be performing throughout the week, and then hitting Madison Square Garden in Manhattan in January. ( All the dates, cities and ticket info here. )

Many miles, many roads I have traveled chasing that lady down around the globe. In fact, I had a flight and hotel booked to see this tour’s original opening night set for Vancouver back in July. We’re just grateful she’s okay now. And now that she’s in my backyard, I figured I’d walk over and say hey.

People have lots of questions about how it went. So now, I’m conducting an interview with myself about the experience, including every question I’ve been asked thus far. And I’ve also uploaded five million videos. Enjoy!

What’s the deal with this tour?

It’s a celebration.

Ah, okay. Got it. Celebrating what exactly?

This is the first-ever greatest hits tour of an Italian woman who showed up to New York City in 1978 with $35 in her pocket and a modest dream of world domination. She went on to dominate the music industry, shatter records, break barriers, piss off the Catholic Church, and challenge societal norms for well over four decades, and is largely regarded to be the Queen of Pop™. You may know her from such classics as “Vogue,” “Into the Groove,” “Hung Up,” “Like a Prayer,” “Hey You” and “I’m Going Bananas.”

Feel free to ask anything. There’s no such thing as a stupid question.

Is it a good show?

Okay, that’s a stupid question. Bitch, it’s Madonna.

What time did she go on?

10:50 p.m. for the opening night in New York City. And if you’re shocked to hear that: welcome to your first Madonna concert! Settle in, because it’s going to be a long night, and you’re not going to get much sleep.

That said, it sounds as though this particular delay was due to technical issues at soundcheck , so it might have more to do with the venue than her. But I’ve also never known her to be prompt, so. Time goes by so slowly for those who wait.

Madonna starting her first US show of The Celebration Tour at 11pm… we are so back pic.twitter.com/rXaxObkFyw — P#!L (@Phil_TBH) December 14, 2023

What time will she go on for my concert, though?

I can’t tell you that. I’m not her tour manager. Yet. It feels safe to assume she’s probably not hitting the stage at the time listed on your ticket, though.

What’s the crowd like?

Girls and gays of a certain age. Loud and supportive. This is mother’s return home, after all. You know the fucking vibes. And Thalia was there too, taking selfie videos the whole night. Arrasando!

How does it start?

There’s a DJ set before she goes on. The legendary Honey Dijon spun for our crowd, but she’s had everyone from Diplo to Stuart Price to Arca filling in.

Roughly five minutes before Madonna hits the stage, Bob the Drag Queen , winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 8 and co-host of Sibling Rivalry , appears in the middle of the crowd in a recreation of Madonna’s classic 1990 MTV VMAs Marie Antoinette look, and begins working his way through the audience. In New York City’s opening night, he called out the legendary Kevin Jz Prodigy , who also had a hand in creating the show. He then walked through GA Pit 2 and onto the stage, and delivered a rousing hype speech about the woman of the evening – the woman who taught us how to fuck – declaring this to be a night of celebration.

As the speech reaches a fever pitch, a rotating platform onstage slowly spins to reveal Madonna in a flowing Eyob Yohannes kimono and House of Malakai halo headpiece, as she launches into an incredible pick for an opening number, “Nothing Really Matters.” It is absolutely electrifying.

What else does Bob do?

The best way to describe the gig is hype man. He shouts her praises before she hits the stage, emcees a “Vogue” ball, struts and poses in front of a video interlude, he comes out as a rodeo clown during “Don’t Tell Me.” They have fun and playful exchanges throughout the night as well, like when Madonna snatches away Bob’s fan during the big finale and cackles: “I’m your biggest fan!” It actually felt particularly appropriate to see someone actually involved in NYC nightlife threading the needle throughout the show in Brooklyn.

What songs does Madonna do?

A lot of them – over two dozen songs spanning the entirety of her storied career, from “Everybody” to “Hung Up” to “Bad Girl.” (!) On the first night in New York City, she performed “I Love New York” for the first time on this tour, because…well, she loves New York. She told us so. (And also called us rats.)

Is she missing any hits?

Oh, tons of them. Millions! Some are more shocking omissions than others. “Frozen.” “Borderline.” “Deeper and Deeper.” “Thief of Hearts.” (Okay, now I’m just being selfish.) The list goes on and on. And yet, it doesn’t really matter. (Nothing really matters, actually.) The set list was destined to be incomplete, because the show would need to be eight hours long at least. This is a fully stacked 2-and-some-change hour concert full of hits and a bit of surprise deep cut picks from every corner of her career. Well, almost. Sorry, Hard Candy .

What’s the theme or vibe of the show?

The show loosely takes us on an autobiographical ride from her early days in New York City – arguing with bouncers to get into clubs – to losing many of her friends amid the AIDS crisis in the ’80s and early ’90s, as well as backlash to her provocative performances as she rises to superstardom. She touches on her biggest and boldest moments as an entertainer over the years, including props and costume homages to her most iconic tours ( Blond Ambition , Girlie Show , Re-Invention and MDNA , among others), music videos and live performances.

Projections throughout the night frequently remind us of her impact on pop culture, from magazine headlines tearing her apart to a photo montage of her famous ex-flames, just to remind us who she’s fucked. There are also nods to her enduring support as a LGBTQ+ ally and fighting against injustice, as well as her spirituality, including subtle flourishes of Kabbalah, including the Tree of Life dancer formation during “Die Another Day.” It’s also a family affair: four of her six children are performers for the night, as well as a tribute to her late mother.

That sounds like a lot at once.

It is a lot at once. Madonna is a lot at once. The show is, like most major Madonna tours, total sensory overload, with plenty of mood swings from dance floor escapism to somber reflection to relentless horniness.

How horny? Are there boobs and butts?

Yes, there are both boobs and butts. At one point during “Hung Up,” all the dancers take off their tops. You probably can’t post footage from that particular performance. She’s making out with anywhere from two to four people throughout the night. There’s simulated sex. Intertwined bodies galore. During the “Vogue” ball, she’s fully getting (pretend) eaten out as guys in jocks clap their cheeks in front of herself and her guest of the evening. (In New York City’s opening night, the guest happened to be her hot boxer boyfriend Josh Popper, who very gamely cheered as he was being shown hole.)

Oh wow. Well, what were the highlights?

Highlights are fast and frequent. The “Blond Ambition” section is maybe the nerdiest fan-faction satisfaction moment of the show. As the oiled-up dancers emerge as boxers throwing punches in sync, Madonna-turned-Dita writhes around to “Erotica” (with some “You Thrill Me” demo vocals), briefly paying homage to the original “Papa Don’t Preach” tour choreography, and delivering some “Justify My Love” and “Fever” too. Early ’90s Madonna fans will be more than aurally satisfied.

You also have Madonna performing “Bad Girl” in a red slip alongside her talented daughter Mercy James on piano. Actually, her kids are a highlight in general: David Banda absolutely kills it on guitar and as a dancer throughout the night, especially as Madonna sings “Mother & Father” alongside him. Estere is an absolute show-stealer as the “Vogue” DJ, especially once she tears up the runway. Watch out for her. She’s actually a young icon in the making.

There’s a very cool futuristic section too, complete with Madonna writhing on top of a box to “Bedtime Story” – an all-time favorite – and taking off into the sky for an absolutely electrifying, laser light-filled, rave-ready rendition of “Ray of Light.” And to cap it all off, she performs “Rain” on the catwalk with the fans blowing full-force on her long pink wig, giving 1995 BRIT Awards. ( If you know, you know! ) It’s a moment. The explosive “Bitch I’m Madonna” / “Celebration” euphoria of the finale full of Madonna looks also thoroughly seals the deal.

At the other extreme, the emotional sequences are all very moving. The “Live to Tell” tribute to friends and family lost to AIDS is incredibly chilling, especially with the way it’s introduced.

How is it introduced?

Madonna is performing “Holiday” joyously with a big disco ball behind her – another big highlight of the show, and perhaps her most fun choreography in the show. And as the song comes to a close, the music starts to slow down and all of the dancers begin to drop to the ground. She looks horrified as they go down one by one, taking off her jacket and draping it over one final friend as she lowers underneath the stage.

That sounds heavy.

It is. There’s an underlying sadness mixed into the joyousness of the tour. At the New York City show, she called out the fact that she feels a kind of survivor’s guilt.

How do you feel about that?

I think it’s honest. I think it’s human. As much as the show is about celebrating her own artistry and stroking her own ego (she’s singing “Bitch I’m Madonna” surrounded by dancers dressed as Madonna yelling the word “Madonna” to herself at one point, after all), it also honors the people that she’s lost – fellow music icons, friends and family – who helped to make her who she is today.

Is she dancing?

Yes, but I think we all need to be extremely honest with ourselves about where Madonna is in her life: this is a 65-year-old woman who has fallen off horses, broken bones, undergone hip replacement surgery, and nearly died six months ago due to a bacterial infection. That she’s walking at all is a miracle, let alone headlining at arenas across the world for months on end.

So she’s not moving like she used to.

“To age is to sin,” Madonna once said while accepting her Billboard Woman of the Year award, which gets echoed during one of the tour interludes. “People say that I’m so controversial. I think the most controversial thing I’ve done is stuck around.”

Yes, she’s moving. No, she’s certainly not performing like she once did. That doesn’t mean she can’t command the stage. It’s still Madonna, after all. I’m tired of watching women – or anyone – reach a certain age and be told to hang it up, age gracefully and disappear. She’s been called “grandma” since she was 35 years old. Don’t ever tell her to stop.

This tour not only serves as a reminder of everything she’s accomplished thus far, but a reminder that the same woman is still standing here today, still putting on the same type of overstimulating mega-pop spectacle that she helped to pioneer in the first place. There are very few examples of artists who have managed to attain the level of success Madonna has who have kept pushing themselves to this degree decades later. She has. That is more than worthy of celebration.

Well, fair enough. Is she singing?

Yes. That mic is on, and she sounds very good.

@muumuse Madonna performs “Rain” at NYC opening night of #CelebrationTour ! ☔️ #Madonna ♬ original sound – Bradley Stern

You’re clearly pleased with the show, but let’s get critical here. What doesn’t work?

There’s only one part of the show that really has to go with a quickness: it’s an interlude towards the very end, featuring silhouettes of someone dressed up as Madonna dancing with someone dressed up as Michael Jackson. They perform to a medley of Madonna and Michael Jackson songs. It’s far too on-the-nose, practically screaming at us “Get it? The King and Queen of Pop!” to assure us of her position on the position on the pop royalty throne. It’s hokey bar mitzvah vibes, and feels more like cruise shop fodder than a visual worthy of a Madonna tour. The decision to use it is genuinely perplexing. Nix it.

Where should I sit?

I’m biased, but I really do think I had the best view in the house in Sound Factory (GA Pit 2). For the diehards: GA Pit is it. You will feel illegally close to her for much of the evening. You’re going to have a great experience in either pit – and you get the “Papa Don’t Preach” in bed over on the right side, very crucially! – but it feels like she lingers on the left side a bit longer. (Left if you’re looking directly at the stage, I mean.) Anywhere along the lower section sides will be great, and dead center in the back will let you take in the entire experience. The thing is, you’re going to have a great time regardless because these types of arena shows are built to stimulate across several stages at once. There’s so much that I saw watching a fan’s far away live-stream from London’s opening night that I missed by being up close in NYC. There’s no choice but to go 500 times.

The merch for this tour is incredible! I didn’t have time to check out the table in-person because I was held back at the door for over a half hour. Barclays ran out of the pit wristbands for me and seven other people, nearly causing a complete and utter gay panic meltdown. They eventually found the wristbands. A story for another day – not Madonna’s problem, anyway. Anyway, I got the Blond Ambition bomber jacket months ago from her shop. All the tour merch is here. Really good mix of vintage designs brought back from the vaults and new stuff.

I don’t really know her that well. Do I go?

Look, it’s taken her four decades to finally commit to a somewhat straightforward, greatest hits-only type of tour. Her artistry is always evolving, but it feels unlikely she will want to do another tour quite as accessible to the general public as this one anytime soon. Consider this your opportunity to see her while she’s still agreeing to dance and sing, get up and do her thing to songs like “Open Your Heart.” And if you care at all about doing your pop history homework, seeing Madonna live at some point in your life is a requirement for a passing grade.

I’m a diehard. Do I go?

I know you’re not a diehard if you’re even asking the question.

I scrolled down to the bottom to see if you did a quick summary of the whole situation.

Much like, say, a biopic, it’s an exercise in futility to cram a career as legendary as Madonna’s into a single show. The stan in me could provide a laundry list of songs and looks that got snubbed. But it would be pointless to do so, because Celebration Tour does a fantastic job at ticking so many boxes and packing the essence of who she is as a person, a performer and a pioneer into one massive, euphoria-inducing spectacle.

An artist four decades deep into their career delivering this level of stage production is essentially unheard of. Even while performing a show dedicated to her trailblazing past, Madonna is still making history and paving the way in the present.

All hail the Queen. Long may she reign.

During her first week of the Celebration Tour at a stop in Antwerp, Belgium, Madonna took a minute to address her recent hospitalization. “Less than four months ago, I was in a hospital and I was unconscious, and people were thinking, predicting that I might not make it,” Madonna told fans at Belgium’s Sportpaleis Arena. “So, it’s a fucking miracle that I’m here right now. My mother, God bless her, she must be watching over me — she said, ‘Girl, it’s not your time to go.'”

Madonna also recently spoke about the “near-death experience” during her Los Angeles concert in March, even addressing her doctor who was in the audience and the first words she said after getting out of her coma .

“It’s called a near-death experience, and I’m not kidding, it was pretty scary,” Madonna said. “Obviously, I didn’t know for four days because I was in an induced coma, but when I woke up, the first word I said was, ‘No.’ Anyway, that’s what my assistant tells me.”

The icon later told the audience, including this writer, at the Forum, “I’m pretty sure that God was saying to me, ‘You want to come with? You want to come with us, wanna go this way?’ And I said, ‘No!'”

“The oppression of the LGBTQ+ is not only unacceptable and inhumane; it’s creating an unsafe environment; it makes America a dangerous place for our most vulnerable citizens, especially trans women of color,” Madonna shared in a statement on Instagram. “Also, these so-called laws to protect our children are unfounded and pathetic. Anyone with half a brain knows not to fuck with a drag queen. Bob and I will see you from the stage in Nashville where we will celebrate the beauty that is the queer community.”

With dates scheduled throughout April 2024, Madonna will continue to travel all across the United States for the Celebration Tour , including stops in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Austin.

Madonna Celebration Tour Set List

Madonna’s tour features some of the legend’s most iconic songs and moments throughout her career.

“Madonna, I dare you to do a world tour and play your greatest motherfuckin’ hits,” Amy Schumer dared the singer in the tour announcement clip , which included appearances from Judd Apatow, Jack Black, Lil Wayne, Diplo, Kate Berlant, Larry Owens, Meg Stalter, Eric Andre, and Bob The Drag Queen, who will support Madonna on the road.

“Four decades … as in, 40 years” Madonna replies. “As in, all those songs?”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performs tracks from the opener “Nothing Really Matters” to “La Isla Bonita,” which she also sang with Schumer in the tour announcement clip.

At a recent stop at the Kia Forum in L.A., Madonna’s set list also included “Holiday” from her self-titled debut to the disco anthem “Hung Up” from 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor to the title track from 1998’s Ray of Light — there’s no shortage of Madonna’s greatest songs to choose from.

With a New Tour, Madonna Shows She Will Never Go Gently

Why would we even want her to?

Madonna, with her hands in the air, dancing among a crowd of people in front of a giant disco ball.

By Vanessa Friedman

Madonna has once again infiltrated the pop culturesphere. The 64-year-old singer announced her 12th world tour — a spin across 40 cities and through four decades of hits entitled “Celebration” — via a five-minute black and white video that shows her hosting a dinner party with an assortment of famous friends that was as attention-demanding as you might expect.

She is resplendent in Heidi braids and Jocelyn Wildenstein face, body winched into a corset, shorts, fishnets and zip-up jacket as she and Jack Black, Lil Wayne, Judd Apatow and Amy Schumer, among other guests, play “Truth or Dare” (get it?), mime “Sex” (get it?), sing along to “La Isla Bonita,” and otherwise offer a brief referential whirl through onetime shocking Madonna moments before the big reveal.

To coincide with the news, Madonna is also on the cover of three different issues of “ Vanity Fair ” (Italian, Spanish, French), in the guise of the Virgin Mary, complete with black and white lace veils and a bleeding heart; inside the magazine she appears in a re-creation of “The Last Supper.”

And to coincide with all that, Piers Morgan , avatar of outrage, is predictably up in arms. How dare she presume to shove herself in our faces yet again, flaunting her body; her smutty jokes; her plastic surgery; her totally, incredibly, no-holds-barred age-inappropriate self?

Duh, because she always dared — that was her truth, more than the dancing, the OK singing, the documentaries, the ad campaigns channeling a sexy housewife for Dolce & Gabbana and a power C.E.O. for Versace . Why should it be any different just because she’s reached Social Security age?

Madonna was never going to go gently into that good night, even if she did have a brief phase living as English landed gentry (that was after her period as a hippie earth mother, as preserved on another cover of “Vanity Fair,” and her period of being Marilyn Monroe). She has always danced on the edge of absurdity and self-caricature, ever since she started actually dancing around the New York club scene in ripped lace petticoats, crosses and fingerless gloves with her belly sticking out. Even when she falls over, as she did at the Brit Awards in 2015 , she does it with gusto and no apologies. We need someone to show us how. She’s not so much a train wreck as the train that wrecks the stasis of smothering politesse; the best woman for the job.

Just imagine what it may bring. Not much has been revealed except that Bob the Drag Queen of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” will be a special guest on all the dates, but if the theme is greatest hits, you have to expect that means not just the songs — “Like a Virgin,” “Vogue,” “Ray of Light,” etc. — but also the schtick. The cone bras. The simulated sex. The harems of sweaty ab-full young men. Maybe a surprise planned smooch with a guest star or two and some tongue. (Britney, where are you?) Perhaps a backstage film moment or two. Ascending from hell and descending from the heavens. Fashion-tastic costumes involving bondage, body-baring. Campy historicism and religion. The whole kit and kaboodle of Madonna-isms.

Her timing, as usual, is impeccable. Naked dressing is making a comeback, as worn not to please the eye of the (male) beholder but to advertise the empowerment of the woman inside the skin. So is the era of Indie Sleaze. Seventy has become the new 50. The president is 80. Maye Musk and other “mature” models are getting their cover tries. Mick Jagger is still prancing around in his fancy pants at 79. Madonna is practically middle-aged by comparison.

Besides, something happens when you stick to your guns long enough: You pass through the stages of being in and out and ascend to the status of national treasure. It happened to Queen Elizabeth II. It happened to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. After 40 years of pop culture presence, Madonna has become, Olivier Bouchara, head of editorial content for Vanity Fair France, said in a news release, “a figure as disturbing as she is sacred.” But the truth is, she really isn’t disturbing any more (real life is way too complicated for her to come anywhere close). She’s comfortingly herself.

At this point, we should just be appreciative. It’s probably not a coincidence most of her guests at the announcement party were comedians. It’s a hint (like the career Easter eggs) not to take any of it too seriously. Blowing raspberries at the world is fun. And cathartic. The show will probably be too. And that, as much as anything, is indeed worth celebrating.

In Madonna’s “Celebration Tour,” A Pop Star Examines Her Past: Review

The Queen of Pop looks back on her career with reverence and joy

In Madonna’s “Celebration Tour,” A Pop Star Examines Her Past: Review

“The most controversial thing I’ve ever done is stick around,” Madonna announced at the conclusion of a career retrospective montage during her “Celebration Tour.” It was certainly a “mic drop” by itself, but in the context of the show, it really set in —  through every era, every romance, every success, and every pearl-clutching controversy, Madonna has risen from the ashes and reinvented herself.

That statement is relevant to her whole career, but it also takes on a bit of added weight given the tour’s narrative: After a nasty bacterial infection put Madonna in the ICU for several days, she had to reschedule the first North American leg of her “Celebration Tour.” So, for the opening date of the series at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on December 13th, Madonna carried an air of overwhelming gratitude, sounding elated to even be alive.

Get Madonna Tickets Here

As such, Madonna provided a thrilling, throughly engaging night of pop music. As she had during the tour’s European leg earlier this year, “The Celebration Tour” features a setlist that spans four decades, with songs from each and every major Madonna studio album (with the exception of 2019’s Madame X , which has been omitted from the show entirely). While the set is something of a “Greatest Hits” tour — an “Eras Tour,” if you will — that’s not the guiding factor. Madonna opted to keep several of her biggest hits out of the setlist (“Material Girl,” “Like a Virgin,” “Borderline,” “Frozen”) in favor of tracks that aren’t always given their flowers — particularly songs from 2003’s American Life , Erotica ‘s title track, and “Bad Girl,” which she’s playing now for the first time since her 1993 Saturday Night Live performance.

Though the “Celebration” was already set to come before Madonna’s illness this year, the episode influenced the show’s sensitive, thankful aura. Even more emotional for Madonna was her homecoming — as Bob the Drag Queen playfully reminded us at the onset of the show, New York City is where it all began for Madonna, who arrived here in 1978 with only $35 in her pocket. Throughout the evening, Madonna acknowledged the role that New York played in both her career and her personality, frequently shouting out the unique “New Yorker” attitude that Madonna herself has cultivated and even busting out the Confessions on a Dance Floor cut “I Love New York” for the first time in 15 years.

Unlike the New York decree that “To be on time is to be five minutes early,” however, Madonna didn’t take the stage until 11:00pm and didn’t finish the set until around 1:15am — according to Madonna, this is because “New York is not for little pussies who sleep.” The show went so late that the pair of middle-aged women next to me left the show with an hour still remaining, especially upon realizing that Madonna wouldn’t be playing “Like a Virgin.”

Still, “The Celebration Tour” is mainly an opportunity for Madonna to have a dialogue with Madonna. At different points in the show, she stood face to face with a past version of herself. She drank and rambled alongside her “shy” 1983 persona, setting the stage for an examination of Madonna’s various reinventions throughout the last 40 years. She playfully danced with a performer wearing her iconic cone bra, and leaned harder into the provocative BDSM imagery of her Erotica era. She also invited her children to perform onstage with her, merging the past, present, and future of her family. With the show’s several screens positioned around the arena stage, Madonna confronted the images of those she’s lost: her mother immortalized on “Mother and Father,” and her touching rendition of “Live to Tell” featured images of significant gay and trans figures that died of AIDS.

Madonna rocks out onstage with her guitar in hand.

First up, she’ll kick off the tour with a trio of back-to-back-to-back gigs at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Dec. 13 , 14 and 16 .

The following month, the “Papa Don’t Preach” pop star will swoop into New York City’s Madison Square Garden for a three concert mini-residency on Jan. 22 , 23 and 29 .

Madonna opening act

On the “Celebration Tour” run, Madonna has tapped famed drag queen, comedian, actor, activist, musician, and reality TV personality Bob The Drag Queen to serve as her opening act.

Not familiar with Bob?

Well, you may want to start with her rise to prominence on the eighth season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” in 2016 where she was crowned the winner.

In the years since, you may have seen Bob in “High Maintenance” (2016), “Tales of the City” (2019), “A Black Lady Sketch Show” (2019) and the 2020 series “We’re Here,” which she co-hosted.

Of course, Bob sings too.

Her single “Purse First” charted at number 43 on the U.S. Dance charts.

Madonna tour postponement

The ‘Celebration Tour’ was originally set to get underway in Canada this past July.

However, Madonna was hospitalized in June after developing a series of bacterial infections.

After a month of care, she took to  Instagram  to share an update on her recovery.

“My focus now is my health and getting stronger and I assure you, I’ll be back with you as soon as I can!”

’80s stars on tour in 2024

While Madonna may be the face of the ’80s, many other icons from the decade of excess will be running victory laps in 2023 when they take their hits on the road.

Here are just five of our favorites you won’t want to miss.

•  Stevie Nicks

•  Rick Springfield with Richard Marx

• Foreigner with Styx

• Journey with Def Leppard

A Material Girl or just plain rude? Madonna upset an arena full of fans Wednesday when she started a pivotal Celebration tour concert about an hour later than usual. But, apparently, she was worth the wait.

The superstar kicked off the U.S. leg of her retrospective tour at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Wednesday night close to 11 p.m. — several hours after doors opened .

For the record:

2:15 p.m. Dec. 14, 2023 A previous version of this story incorrectly said that Madonna was scheduled to perform at SoFi Stadium. Her previously announced shows were set for Crytpo.com Arena and have been replaced with upcoming performances at the Kia Forum.

Fans took to social media to air their grievances for nearly three hours while they waited for the “Vogue” singer to appear. Some called her rude, others demanded refunds and another reported that the crowd of 14,000 started chanting “b—” as the minutes ticked by.

“I don’t give a f— if you’re Madonna. If you’re 3 hours late, you’re just f— rude,” one X user wrote .

“I love Madonna but it’s really f— up how she’s literally like 2 hours late for her FIRST show in the us,” another added .

“At Madonna and she’s like two hours late and we have done the wave like fifteen times,” wrote another.

Representatives for Madonna declined to comment Thursday.

The “Like a Virgin” and “Like a Prayer” singer took the stage at 10:50 p.m., The Times has confirmed.

The seven-time Grammy winner had been dealing with sound issues ahead of the performance and was doing sound checks until doors opened at 7:30 p.m., a person close to her who was not authorized to comment told The Times. Madonna usually takes the stage around 9:30 or 10 p.m. most nights after a DJ warms up the crowd.

New York City DJ Honey Dijon, who served as Wednesday’s opener, went on about an hour after doors opened, taking the stage around 8:40 p.m. due to similar tech issues and played a 30- to 45-minute set, the person said. Then Bob the Drag Queen came on to introduce Madonna at about 10:45 p.m.

Madonna did not acknowledge her tardiness during the sold-out show, but at one point she asked members of the audience if they could hear her given the sound issues she had been contending with earlier. Otherwise, the singer was stoked to be back in the city that launched her career .

The show ended around 2 a.m., one fan noted , and got glowing reviews from those who got over the delayed start .

“Madonna was on fire tonight,” another wrote on X . “Late start but didn’t feel late because crowd didn’t fill up until around 10.”

In its review of the show, Variety addressed the late start but added that it was “worth the wait.” She’s set to play Barclays again Thursday and Friday, returning to New York for three nights in January at Madison Square Garden.

Madonna will kick off her career-spanning Celebration tour in October, months after she was hospitalized for a ‘serious bacterial infection’ in June.

Aug. 15, 2023

“It’s so great to be back in New York. You have no idea. The enthusiasm, the joy, it’s just coming out of my pores. It’s amazing. Touch me right now. Please someone, touch me,” she said onstage, adding, “No one is more surprised that I have made it this far than me. Yeah, four decades, m—! And I got to tell you, I didn’t think I was going to make it this summer , but here I am. Thank you for having me. Thank you for standing by me, for your support, your love.”

The Celebration tour was already off to a rough start. The 65-year-old Madonna initially announced its launch in January, with plans to hit the stage in July. However, just weeks before showtime, the headliner was hospitalized for a “serious bacterial infection” that ultimately delayed the tour’s launch to October .

Madonna, who had been scheduled to perform a series of concerts at Cytpo.com Arena last October, has rebooked those shows at the Kia Forum in Inglewood on March 4, 5, 7, 9 and 11.

Madonna’s boyfriend, Josh Popper, also made an appearance during the first Brooklyn show. The boxing coach, who has been linked to Madge since February, joined her onstage to help judge a vogueing competition during her performance of the 1990 hit “Vogue.” The two also shared a kiss onstage, People reported.

Madonna's NYC shows at Madison Square Garden postponed after hospitalization

WABC logo

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Madonna is rescheduling the North American leg of her world tour, including four nights scheduled at Madison Square Garden in New York City, following her recent hospitalization for a "serious bacterial infection."

The pop superstar was originally scheduled to perform at The Garden on Wednesday, August 23, Thursday, August 24, Saturday, August 26 and Sunday, August 27.

Madonna posted an update on her health Monday on Instagram.

"I'm on the road to recovery and incredibly grateful for all the blessings in my life," the pop superstar wrote on Instagram. "My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children. My second thought was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour. I also didn't want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show."

"My focus now is on my health and getting stronger and I assure you, I'll be back with you as soon as I can," she continued.

The North American leg of her career-spanning Celebration Tour, originally scheduled to kick off July 15 in Vancouver and run through October 8 in Las Vegas, has been postponed. Her tour will now start on October 14, at London's O2 Arena.

Live Nation confirmed the postponement. "Rescheduled dates will be announced as soon as possible. Fans are encouraged to hold onto their tickets as they will be valid for the new dates once announced," a statement read.

According to her manager Guy Oseary, on June 24, Madonna "developed a serious bacterial infection which led to a several-day stay in the ICU," as he wrote on Instagram a few days later. "Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The Celebration Tour is not just a commemoration of Madonna’s 40 years of pop superstardom , but a reminder that no matter how many follow in her path, she remains the queen.

Many songs, including “Justify My Love,” “Everybody” and “Live To Tell,” haven’t been played regularly in decades, but she’s dusted them off for this seven-month run.

Trending on billboard.

“Rehearsals began over a year ago with almost a 2 month break waiting for me recover from a near death experience,” she continued, referring to the shows she had to postpone due to her severe bacterial infection and subsequent hospitalization last year. “They never stopped practicing… they never stopped cheering me on and supporting me … They were also going to school and rehearsing every night. !! . am so very proud of all of them.”

Madonna is also mom to daughter Lourdes Leon, whom she shares with ex-boyfriend Carlos Leon, and son Rocco Ritchie, whom she shares with ex-husband Guy Ritchie. She and the director went on to adopt David shortly after the “Material Girl” singer founded her charity organization Raising Malawi in 2006. Later, she adopted Mercy, then Stella and Estere — all three of whom are also from Malawi — as a single mother.

The new post comes one day after Madonna opened up about touring with her kids in an interview with W Magazine . “When I go on tour, nothing brings me more happiness to know, we are all working on the same show creating the magic together,” she told the publication. “It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show.”

“Of course, I am also their mother so sometimes we get on each other’s nerves,” she added. “We are a family of artists but are also a family and that’s what happens.”

Kelly Ripa Joins Madonna Onstage During Final Madison Square Garden 'Celebration Tour' Show

The 'Live with Kelly and Mark' host joined the pop star for the vogueing portion of the concert on Monday

madonna tour nyc

Madonna was joined by another special guest onstage during her third and final Madison Square Garden Celebration Tour show in New York City on Monday.

The musician pulled Kelly Ripa up in front of the crowd to help judge her backup dancers' vogueing skills during a portion of her show inspired by her 1990 hit single, "Vogue."

Ripa, 53, was all smiles sitting next to Madonna, 65, on a bar chair as both of them handed out 10s across the board for the dancers' performances.

Matthew Rettenmund/SplashNews.com

Madonna — who has been wowing audiences in North America and Europe on her 79-date Celebration Tour — wore a glittering corset with a pair of fishnet stockings during the vogueing competition. She teamed the purple outfit with matching gloves and heels.

Ripa, on the other hand, was clad in a black jumpsuit with a purple feathered belt tied around her waist.

On Tuesday morning, Ripa — a longtime fan of Madonna and still in her makeup from the night before — recounted her moment with husband Mark Consuelos on Live with Kelly and Mark .

"I’ve had a 40 year relationship with Madonna — in my mind, to be clear. But last night, something happened that I can’t really put into words. Should we just show it? I just want to show you what happened last night," the daytime talk show host said, before playing footage of her appearance for the audience.

As Ripa watched, she said, "I’m glad that you guys have this footage because I don’t remember this. They handed me a football and I had to throw it!"

A regular fixture at Madonna concerts, Ripa said that she attended this latest show with Consuelos, Demi Moore , Anderson Cooper , Andy Cohen and others. "We're kind of like Madonna's groupie posse," she said, with Consuelos joking that they were "the oldest groupies in the world."

Ripa then recalled her reaction when she first found out she was going out onstage. "They’re like, 'You’re going to go on stage with Madonna.' And at that point, I, Kelly Ripa, died," she shared.

"And so the ghost of Kelly is now walking over. And I’m hearing words and they’re not really making sense. 'She’s going to give you a football. You’re going to have cards in your hands. Things are going to happen.' And I am just sort of going, 'Why are you talking to me? I died. Shouldn’t the paramedics come?' " Ripa continued, revealing that she tried to focus on one thing: "Kelly, do not look too eager and when they take your photo, keep your mouth shut."

However, in the moment, she wasn't able to do it, showing a photo of the two of them with her mouth wide open. "In my mind, I’m like, ‘I’m doing it. My mouth is completely closed so I look cool just like Madonna,’ she explained.

Despite that, Consuelos was one proud husband. "I am so proud of you. You looked gorgeous, you’re so cool, she loves you," he said, adding later, "You look beautiful."

Ripa, meanwhile, has just been one of the many surprise guests that have joined Madonna onstage for the fun portion of her concert.

During December's tour stops at the Barclays Center, Madonna brought out  boyfriend Josh Popper  as well as Julia Garner , who was once the choice to portray the singer in an anticipated biopic written, produced and directed by the pop star.

In the past, Madonna has also been joined by the likes of Arca,  Debi Mazar ,  Diplo ,  Donatella Versace ,   FKA Twigs  and  Julia Fox , among others.

Madonna is still riding high off the success of her global The Celebration Tour, which will conclude next month. As she prepares to wind down from the road, one of the pop superstar’s biggest and most important singles is surging in popularity once more.

Usually when a decades-old cut returns to prominence in any way, it’s thanks to one special event, a milestone, or a unique pop culture moment. Madonna has both working in her favor this week.

“Like a Prayer” is currently bounding up the U.S. iTunes chart. At present, the tune reappears at No. 60 on the ranking of the bestselling individual songs in America. It just returned to the tally, and it seems like it will continue to climb in the coming hours and maybe even days.

Fans of Madonna–both casual and die-hard–may be returning to the tune after hearing it in a new movie trailer. “Like a Prayer” soundtracks the new teaser for the forthcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine . The action-packed flick is one of the most highly-anticipated of the year, and its trailer became a trending topic from the moment it arrived.

Being featured in a major movie trailer might be enough to push “Like a Prayer” up the iTunes chart–but it’s not the only thing going on with the tune. Superfans of Madonna may also be honoring the smash as it celebrates a special anniversary.

It was 35 years ago–almost to the day–that “Like a Prayer” reached No. 1 on the Hot 100. The same week, the album that shares a title with its massive single also landed atop the Billboard 200. Not many people may be aware of the importance of this week, but those who adore Madonna may very well be purchasing the cut–perhaps again–to celebrate its initial crowning.

Proud mom Madonna says her kids have put ‘blood, sweat and tears’ into Celebration Tour performances

Madonna with kids David, Mercy, Estere and Stella

Madonna is proud of her children for working hard as performers in her ongoing Celebration Tour.

“I think what my children learned the most in this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you want to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them,” the pop superstar, 65, said in an interview with W magazine published Wednesday.

“And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears.”

As Madonna prepared to hit the road for the concert series — a spectacle that honors her four decades in the spotlight — she tapped her four youngest kids, David, 18, Mercy, also 18, plus 11-year-old twins Stella and Estere, to showcase their unique talents on stage.

Madonna

“Because the Celebration Tour is a retrospective of my life, I thought it made perfect sense to include all of my children still living with me in the show; they all dance and play musical instruments, and have been doing so for years,” the “Ray of Light” singer told the publication.

“David has played guitar since he was a child. Mercy has played piano since she was 8 and she’s been classically trained most of her life. Eventually, when I adopted the twins, they started to play piano and dance as well.”

Madonna noted that there is “always an endless parade of dancing and [performing arts] teachers coming and going in our house,” so it only made sense to give her children a bigger platform to shine on the Celebration Tour.

A show highlight for the Grammy winner is when daughter Mercy accompanies her on piano during a powerful rendition of her 1993 ballad “Bad Girl.”

“I saw a strange, poetic juxtaposition of hedonism and exploration emerging into the light of Mercy, sitting stoically at her grand piano playing Chopin as she beckoned me towards her, making me think about the choices I have made in my life,” Madonna said, explaining how that specific moment came to be.

“Singing ‘Bad Girl’ was kind of my confession to her, and I felt we had an unspoken understanding of what was happening.”

Meanwhile, David duets with his mom on “Mother and Father” from her 2003 album, “American Life.”

“‘Mother and Father’ is one of my favorite moments in the show because it gave me a chance to not only honor my mother and her memory but also to honor David’s mother and her memory,” she said of the young creative, whom she adopted from Malawi in 2006.

Madonna and son David

“He has always wanted to sing and play guitar. He loves being on stage — this is nothing new. Much of the show is about motherhood, family, and the importance of that in my artistic life.”

As for Stella and Estere, the girls dance their hearts out when Madonna sings her 2000 smash “Don’t Tell Me,” and also during a section in the show that pays homage to ballroom and the art of vogueing.

“While Estere was learning how to DJ, she became interested in ballroom competitions. Just by luck, one of my choreographer’s assistants, Ivy Mugler, has her own ballroom house called House of Mugler,” she says of how the two became interested in that sect of dance.

Madonna and others onstage

“She started taking Estere aside during rehearsals to another room—and within a couple of weeks she was doing death drops and spins and surprising us with her ability. So, of course we had to turn that section of the show into Estere’s Ball.”

Madonna is also mom to Lourdes “Lola” Leon, 27 — whom she shares with ex Carlos Leon — and Rocco Ritchie, 23 — whom she shares with ex-husband Guy Ritchie. Her eldest have also participated in her tours, including 2012’s MDNA Tour, for which Lourdes worked in the wardrobe department while Rocco performed on stage.

“I have always been blessed with children who are interested in music, dance and art. Starting from the top with Lola, who was not only an incredible ballet dancer and a rhythmic gymnast, she also switches to musical theater and contemporary dance,” she said.

Madonna with her kids

The eternal hitmaker acknowledged that “nothing brings [her] more happiness” than collaborating with her kids.

“It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show,” she elaborated. “Of course, I am their mother so sometimes we get on each other’s nerves. We are a family of artists but we are also a family, and that’s what happens.”

The Celebration Tour’s next stop is Friday in Mexico City, followed by a final — and free — show in Rio de Janeiro on May 4.

The next day, the Grown Ups actress shared an Instagram post about her special time with the singer, which began with a closer look at her Kahlo-inspired outfit.

And, while showing off the ensemble, she even channelled Madonna by evoking "Vogue" with her pose.

In the caption of the post, which she shared in both English and Spanish, Hayek expressed gratitude toward Madonna for including her in the show.

Salma Hayek joins Madonna on stage as Celebration Tour dazzles Mexico City

The actress served as a guest judge during a performance of the 1990 hit Vogue.

madonna tour nyc

Salma Hayek has thanked Madonna for an “unforgettable night” after she joined the pop superstar on stage during her Celebration Tour.

The actress served as a guest judge for a performance of the 1990 hit Vogue during one of the singer’s Mexico City shows

Each show pays homage to the New York ballroom culture which the song was inspired by as dancers perform energetic choreography in extravagant outfits for Madonna and a guest while they grade them 10s across the board.

Mexican-American actress Hayek opted for a Frida Kahlo-inspired look for the night as she wore her hair in an updo with plaits and a floral headpiece.

For her outfit she wore a colourful maxi skirt, a black corset top and a cropped leather jacket paired with bold, gold jewellery.

Madonna donned a black and silver corset with long sleeves for the performance.

Hayek shared photos of her outfit and of her on stage alongside Madonna to Instagram, writing: “Thank you so much @madonna for letting me be a part of your iconic celebration tour.

“This unforgettable night goes in my bag of precious treasure”.

She tagged the post #VIVAMEXICO #VIVAMADONNA.

Actress Jessica Alba was among those to comment on the performance, sharing crown emojis as she described the collaboration as “epic”.

The Celebration Tour sees the Queen Of Pop perform her greatest hits from across her four-decade career.

The show also features a variety of theatrical stage set-ups and the singer wears a host of extravagant outfits.

For her rendition of Vogue at the opening night of the tour in London in October, Madonna brought out her younger daughter Estere and eldest daughter Lourdes.

As the dancers showed off their moves, including Estere, Madonna and Lourdes graded them on their performances.

The singer has also brought Australian pop star Kylie Minogue, designer Donatella Versace, actress Julia Garner and model Pamela Anderson on as guests during her tour.

This is Madonna’s first tour since her Madame X shows, which ended in 2020.

The tour was originally due to start in Canada but had to be postponed due to the singer contracting a “serious bacterial infection” which led to her having a several-day stay in intensive care.

After her performances in London, she moved on to her European and North American legs.
