The crystalline surface reflects the lake's unique tufa towers, young volcanic cones, and rugged Sierra peaks. The coastline of Hanging Lake in Glenwood Canyon is composed of delicate travertine, and the beautiful blue color is the product of peculiar minerals in the water. The Integratron: A Fusion of Art, Science, and Magic

Where : Landers, California

The Vibe :  The geological phenomenon was originally designed to house powers of rejuvenation, human-life extension, and anti-gravity time travel in the heart of California’s Mojave desert. It was built in the 1950s by aircraft mechanic and ufologist George Van Tassel  — under instruction from an alien from Venus he encountered during a space trip. (Hey, that's the story!) The structure, made of wood, fiberglass, and concrete, was sadly never put to the test as a vehicle for time travel (Van Tassel died in 1978). But you can step inside for meditative sonic-healing sound baths sessions, where participants lie down in the main chamber and immerse themselves in harmonic sounds produced by quartz crystal bowls. In the supposedly perfect wooden geometric structure, the experience is so soothing, you'll feel like you're actually bathing in sound. Musicians like Arcade Fire, Moby, and the Smashing Pumpkins have visited the dome in search of new inspiration and larger-than-life vibrations. Sound baths happen bi-monthly and are on a first-come-first-serve basis for $20 per person (private sessions and group rates are available, too).

Good to Know : Aqua Soleil Hotel & Mineral Waters , a contemporary hotel with bright and airy rooms and a spa with 24-hour access to heated mineral pools, is a 40-minute drive from The Integratron. The Ace Hotel and Swim Club , a mid-century boutique hotel and oasis in Palm Spring’s high-desert paradise, is filled with quirky characters and a large outdoor pool and spa. (Plus weeknight karaoke and bingo.) If Airbnb is more your thing, Joshua Tree House is a two-bed, two-bath 1949 hacienda located ten minutes from the west entrance of Joshua Tree National Park.

How to Get There : Drive 2.5 hours from Los Angeles or 60 minutes from Palm Springs.

Salvation Mountain: One Man's Painted Heaven

Where : Niland, California The Vibe : Leonard Knight’s self-built 50-foot clay mountain is inscribed with religious passages that focus on a simple message: God is Love. Knight began his sculptural tribute after a hot air balloon journey failed in this patch of the desert near the Salton Sea. He planned to stay for a week, but the project took 30 years to complete and has since become an ever-growing community art project, as Knight encouraged visitors to bring paint and supplies for their own contributions. It is estimated that the mountain contains over 100,000 gallons of paint and thousands of hay bales (the basis of the sculpture).

Good to Know : Follow the rainbow to The Saguaro in Palm Springs and lounge by the pool with views of the hotel's technicolor suites. Or rent a desert cruiser bike and head to the Korakia Pensione , a subdued Mediterranean oasis where you can reflect on your visit to Salvation Mountain while relaxing on private daybeds.

Mount Shasta: An Alpine Community Where Heaven and Earth Meet

Where: Mount Shasta, California

The Vibe : The 14,179-foot ice-covered dormant volcano in Northern California is highly praised by spiritual seekers as one of the most powerful energy vortexes in North America. With over 26,000 visitors a year (many of whom never leave), the peak's high-vibrational energy has lead to many shamantic awakenings, spiritual growth pursuits, emotional restorations, and a-ha moments. "It does not matter where you go on the mountain," wrote Dianne Robbins about her trip here. "The mountain's energy is everywhere." The Shasta worshippers are often compared to Ancient Greeks who were obsessed with Olympus, or to Moses and his Sinai. Legend has it there is even a hidden city inside the peak inhabited by higher-dimensional beings called Lemurians, and the saucer-shaped clouds that often gather at the summit are engineered for the disguise of alien-aircraft arrivals. Talk about far out.

Good to Know : Guided meditations, vision quests, and hiking excursions are available through Shasta Vortex Adventures . The Trinity Divide trails are especially breathtaking with no expert hiking experience required. The three-mile Heart Lake Trail takes hikers up to Castle Peak with stunning views of Mount Shasta's reflection over the small and serene lake. The best time to visit is the late spring when temperatures are in the low 60s, cooler than the average 75° during peak tourist season in the summer. Nestled at the foot of Mt. Shasta, McCloud Hotel is an ideal location for guests hoping to take advantage of the surrounding river and its three waterfalls. Railroad Park Caboose offers the opportunity to stay in your own refurbished vintage Cotton Belt railroad car on a beautiful 50-acre private property.

Visitors come to drive the 17-mile scenic-loop drive, admire the majestic, free-standing sandstone buttes, and imagine themselves embracing a kind of let-their-hair-down freedom, like Thelma & Louise . This sprawling, 92,000-acre valley is home to the Navajo Nation and remains their tribal-owned sacred land dedicated to their Creator. In additional to the loop drive, visitors can experience this ever-changing natural beauty by hiking the eleven trails and lookouts in the park. A famous spot is John Ford's point, where visitors can recreate the iconic image of a solo horseback rider overlooking the high plateau at the edge of the desert.

Crater Lake: The Big Blue

Where : Klamath County, Oregon The Vibe: Formed in 4680 B.C. by the volcanic explosion of Mount Mazama, the six-mile-wide, 1,943-foot-deep Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the U.S.; the ninth deepest in the world; and is famous for its crystal-clear water. Worshipped by the indigenous Klamath Native Americans, this sacred lake is known for engendering a spiritual and religious-like wonder: For centuries, the tribe's shaman was the only one allowed to visit the lake, as many feared looking into the depths too long would invite life-long sorrow ... or death. There are no streams of water in or out of the lake, which explains its clarity and vibrant blue appearance. Visitors often seek the Old Man of The Lake , a mysteriously implanted log that has been sitting in place for one hundred years, and the bright, rust-colored Pumice Castle that juts out on the eastern wall of the caldera . Wizard Island , named for its resemblance to a sorcerer’s hat (pre-Harry Potter), is the top of a cinder-cone volcano within Crater Lake, where one can marvel at 800-year-old trees.

Good to Know: Crater Lake Park is snow-covered from October through June. Peak season is between June and August, when the park's roads, trails, and facilities tend to be fully operational. Amtrak provides daily service to Klamath Falls and a shuttle runs from the Amtrak station to Rim Village between late June and early October.

El Santuario de Chimayó: The Teeniest-Tiniest, Holiest Church

Where: Chimayó , New Mexico

The Vibe: The 19th-century adobe-style church is a historical landmark housing "holy dirt" in the foothills of the Sangre de Christo Mountains in northern New Mexico. The National Park Service has called it one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage centers in the United States, with more than 300,000 visitors a year journeying to find deep healing of the mind, body, and spirit. It is reported that during Holy Week, pilgrims make the 30-mile trek from Sante Fe, and even more remarkably, the 90-mile trek from Albuquerque. Returning pilgrims leave behind testimonials of the healing power of the holy dirt, which is dug out of a tiny well named El Pocito, with handouts suggesting silent prayers to say as you rub it on the part of your body in need of its healing powers. The tiny church and its grounds remain an unexplained wonder.

Good to Know: The landmark is an easy drive from Chimayó Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi , a warm, cozy spot nestled in the heart of Santa Fe, with Navajo rugs, hand-carved doors, beamed ceilings, and sandstone walls. The city's oldest hotel, Hotel St. Francis , is beautiful and simple. Plus, it comes with access to hotel concierge Inger Boudouris, who has been working there since 1987 and knows just about everything there is to know about Santa Fe.

How to Get There: El Santuario de Chimayó is a 30-minute drive from downtown Sante Fe and a one-hour drive from Taos.

Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp, Florida.

Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp: Psychic Capital of the World

Where: Volusia County, Florida

The Vibe: A small community between Daytona and Orlando is home to an unusually large number of psychics and mediums (it is called Psychic Capital of the World) and is heavily infiltrated by paranormal-seeking-tourists. The spiritualist camp started in 1875 by George P. Colby , a trance medium who traveled the country giving readings and seances and was instructed by his Native American spirit guide — named Seneca — to build a spiritual camp in Florida. Today, the residents practice the religion of Spiritualism, based on the guiding principle of one continuous life. Visitors are welcome to the camp with lodging provided at The Cassadaga Hotel , which has a 1920s speakeasy vibe and "friendly" spirits, of which guests are warned on the hotel's website. Fun fact: Bright Eyes wrote their album, Cassadaga , here, and Tom Petty alludes to the camp in his song "Casa Dega." Tarot card readings are available by resident mediums, as well as historical property tours, and animal spirit meditations.

Good to Know: Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp offers guided tours Thursday through Saturday. Seminars and workshops are offered weekly on the camp's website. Once you have enough of the paranormal, head 30 minutes north to a very different type of camp in Orlando, Florida, and experience Disney World the adult way at Grande Lakes.

Maunakea Observatory: See the Stars Above the Sea

Where: Big Island, Hawaii

The Vibe: The summit of Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, is the site of the world's largest astronomical observatory, with telescopes operated by astronomers from eleven countries in the world. It is the highest island mountain on Earth, rising 32,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean floor, and the only place in the world where you can drive from sea level to 14,000 feet in two hours. Its unique atmosphere allows for the highest number of cloud-free, clear-sky nights in the world. From the observatory, visitors can gaze into the cosmos, watch moonrises from infrared telescopes, and check out "moon valley," where the Apollo astronauts test-drove their rover before the 1969 odyssey to the moon.

Good to Know : You can drive up all the way to the summit during daytime, weather permitting, and if you have four-wheel drive. (Be aware of high-altitude effects). At night, local volunteer astronomers set up telescopes in front of the visitor station and supervise guests as part of their free nighttime stargazing program. The lower slopes of Mauna Kea are also popular for hunting, hiking, and mountain sightseeing. Once you are ready to rest your eyes, stay at a dreamy, tropical fern forest known as Tree House.

How to Get There : From Waimea, the trip takes about one hour; from Kona, the trip takes about 60-90 minutes.

Big Horn Medicine Wheel: A 10,000-Year-Old Astrology App

Where: Lovell, Wyoming

The Vibe: Situated in a national forest dating back 10,000 years, the phenomenal large stone structure made from local limestone is a sacred landmark of scientific inquiry used to predict astrological events. It was built by the Plains Native Americans perhaps as long as 800 years ago, and now is protected by the Crow Native Americans. The wheel is located at the summit of Medicine Mountain and is said to be a locus point for the balancing energies of the earth, sun, and moon. At the center of the wheel is a donut-shaped pile of 28-limestone rocks — 28 being a sacred number associated with the lunar cycle. Today, the Big Horn Medicine Wheel continues to help the Crow tribe predict the summer solstice and represents the beauty of changing seasons and new life.

Good to Know:  The Wheel is available for visits only during the summer months. Native Americans have placed prayer flags along with other sacred symbolic items around a circular fence that protects the sculpture. It is expected that visiting tourists respect these items and do not disturb.

WITCHY Vacations in the U.S.: From Salem to Sedona

WITCHY Vacation Spots in the U.S.: 15+ from Salem to Sedona

I don’t know about you, but I’m a Sagittarius and I love to travel. I have that wanderlust blood that tends to boil if I don’t leave my home-state at least three times a year. Each time I choose a vacation, I pick a destination that ties into my spiritual path of witchcraft. Typically this means historical locations, beautiful natural landmarks, and new age communities. If you’re a modern witch and love to travel, time to book your next witchy vacation at one of our top 15+ spots in the U.S.!

First, Choose Your Witchy Vacay Vibe

Before you choose a location for your witchy vacation, figure out what vibe you’re going for. Do you want to stay right in the city, where you can walk to restaurants, shops and historic sites? Or would you prefer the beach to make beautiful sea magic with the elementals? Maybe you don’t want either and would prefer a magical weekend in the mountains. Whatever your vibe, we have some witchy recommendations below. So read on!

Choose Your Urban Location for Witchy Shopping & Site Seeing

1. salem, ma.

What? You didn’t expect me to say Salem, did you? In all seriousness, I’ve been to Salem, MA and absolutely adored it. It gets a bad rap by people online, but the truth is – I enjoyed being in such a historical place it didn’t matter if there were “cheesy” witch shops or not. There are also legitimate witchcraft shops, REAL witches who run those shops, delicious food (don’t get me started on the lobster rolls), and lots of haunted and historical sites to see. Make sure you take a trip to the town of Danvers nearby, as it was the original Salem proper. Don’t skip out on our number one witchy vacation spot!

Salem is a great witchy vacation spot for numerous reasons. Copyright Otherworldly Oracle

2. New Orleans, LA

New Orleans is another witchy vacation spot in the U.S. that people either adore or hate. If you’re a witch or interested in the occult, you’ll probably love it. New Orleans is known for its myriad of unsettled spirits, including the Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau . Voodoo and hoodoo take up a home in this city below the sea AND the ghosts walk freely day or night. Check out the LaLaurie House, the Garden District, the Voodoo shops and historical parks. Plus, you can’t beat the Cajun cuisine.

3. Savannah, GA

If you are a witch who enjoys haunted houses and spirit work, Savannah is said to be the most haunted city in the United States. Stay at the Marshall House Hotel (one of the most haunted locations in the city) and meet a little girl ghost. Eat at the Pirate House or Old Pink House to dine with the undead. There are ghost tours that detail the history and hauntings of the city PLUS talk about Hoodoo and the Gullah people’s folk magic traditions. My mom and I went one year and brought ghosts home with us. Learn more about our Savannah adventures here .

4. New York City, NY

Why is New York City a top witchy vacation spot on our list? The witchcraft community is booming in the Big Apple, that’s why. If you can handle the city hustle and bustle, there are all kinds of witchcraft, conjure and metaphysical shops throughout the city. Do you have any Irish ancestors who came through Ellis Island? Take a ferry to the spot where your ancestors landed in this country. NYC is such a great place for witches to eat, soak up the culture, visit historical sites and shop! I truly enjoyed my trip to New York.

NYC has a growing community of witches and shops, not to mention historical sites. A great vacation spot for witches.

5. San Francisco, CA

San Francisco is one of our top witchy vacation spots for a couple of reasons. First, it has a large witchcraft community as evidenced by the DOZENS of occult shops around the city. Next, the famous haunted Queen Anne Hotel and the infamous ghost Miss Mary Lake. Stay at the Victorian Queen Anne Hotel and stay in the haunted Mary Lake suite to catch a glimpse of the woman in white (who supposedly was into “black magic” according to some sources). Take a road trip from San Fran to San Jose and visit the Winchester Mystery House – a mansion that continually “grows” and changes even after the woman of the house’s death.

6. Tampa Bay, FL

Good ol’ Tampa Bay, FL. What an awesome witchy city with so much to do! Chill on the nearby Clearwater or St. Pete Beaches, then do some shopping at one of the dozens of metaphysical shops in the Bay area. Go for a ghost tour in Tampa’s historic district known as Ybor City, which also has a history of Afro-Cuban Santeria and other magical traditions. OR go for a ghost tour in St. Petersburg. Also, try out a dolphin-watching boat or see the manatees at Crystal River (an hour’s drive from Tampa). Or kayak the Weedon Island nature preserve for a truly out-of-this-world experience.

A great witchy spot, believe it or not, ,is Tampa Bay FL.

7. Portland, OR

There’s a spot in Portland, OR called the “Mystic District” with 3 metaphysical shops on one block. People say when you come to Portland, you can feel the “magic” in the air. With lots of open-minded and nature-centered individuals, it’s no wonder Portland is a destination and residence for many witches and pagans. There are dozens of witch “meet-ups” and open pagan circles to try out while you’re visiting! And don’t forget to stop in the (albeit not authentic) but kitschy and fun Voodoo Doughnuts Shop on SW 3rd Ave.

8. Charleston, SC

Did you know there were people tried for heresy and witchcraft in Charleston, SC in the eighteenth century almost a hundred years after the Salem Witch Trials? In addition to having a history of witch trials and folk magic, Charleston is one of America’s oldest cities and is also reportedly quite haunted. I hear the food is something to write home about, too! Any wanderlusting witch would be smart to take a witchy vacation to Charleston, SC.

Do you want to vacation at a witchy spot with history, hauntings and good food? Charleston is the place for you!

9. Asheville, NC

Another spot in the conservative Carolinas you wouldn’t expect to be on the list, but it is…Asheville, NC! First of all, if you go to Asheville you have to tour the famous Biltmore house. It’s haunted, it’s beautiful and it has quite a few cool events to attend especially around Halloween and Christmas. There are quite a few witchcraft covens and pagan fellowships in Asheville. Stop to shop at Asheville’s Raven and Crone on Merrimen Ave. And, again, don’t forget to stuff your witchy face with some amazing southern food!

Or Head to the Mountains or Desert to Reconnect

10. sedona, az.

One of my favorite witchy vacation spots in the U.S. is Sedona, AZ. It’s known to be a hotbed for spiritual and otherworldly activity. The entire city is filled with new agers and magical folks, as well as the shops and businesses they run. Want to go on a crystal shopping spree? This is the place to do it. Then hike up a few red rock formations to charge yourself at a spiritual vortex. Maybe you’ll meet a shaman…or an alien (as some people claim!) Or a cult. Be careful of the cults out there, folks. We literally stayed in an AIRBNB owned by a cult (we reserved it unknowingly then found out later).

11. Gatlinburg, TN

Just seven miles from the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Gatlinburg is a scenic spot in Tennessee. If you’re looking for an AirBNB getaway that takes you to a serene cabin overlooking a valley, this is your witchy vacation. You can stay just out of town or in town, your choice! Either way, you’re close to restaurants and shops in the city proper AND in the middle of all of the magical hiking of the Great Smokies. Connecting with the ancestors and mountain spirits is inevitable.

12. Hot Springs, AR

I’ve heard so many good things about Arkansas. Seriously! There’s apparently a plethora of untouched, gorgeous landscape in the Hot Springs State. Hence, why we’re listing Hot Springs, AR here for an enchanting witchy vacation. Apparently, you can stay in the town of Hot Springs, AR and visit the Hot Springs National Park daily to hike and soak in the natural hot springs there. As witches, we know the healing properties of thermal hot springs…so why not partake? At the very least, relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Or Go to the Beach

13. half moon bay.

There are beautiful beaches on both the east and west coast. One of our favorite witchy vacations involves an extended trip to Half Moon Bay, California. Just 30 miles away from San Francisco, this beach is one of the country’s absolute best. Some of the beaches here are even surrounded by rocky cliffs, giving your beach day a little more privacy and splendor.

14. Cocoa Beach

While it might not be on every travel list online, Cocoa Beach, Florida is a great spot to relax and enjoy the larger wave of the Atlantic Ocean. One of the best things about this witchy vacation is you can stay directly on the beach and be in walking distance to restaurants, bars and shops in the area. Check out the Ron Jon Surf Shop for souvenirs, swimsuits, and such.

15. Assateague Island

If you’re a fan of making magic at the beach AND love wildlife, Assateague Island is a 37 mile long barrier island off the coasts of Maryland and Virginia. It’s not only beautiful and peaceful, it has WILD horses! You read that right. There are multiple places to camp, if you want to reconnect with nature. And don’t be surprised if you leave your tent in the morning and see a wild stallion standing ten feet away. Every horse lover’s dream witchy vacay!

The TOP 10 WITCHY Vacation Spots in the U.S. from Salem to San Fran!

Sedona is one of my favorite places on earth ❤️

As a generational witch, I can tell you there is NOTHING witchy about Cocoa Beach, I’ve lived here all my life and have had to stay in the broom closet. It use to be a quiet, quaint town. Now, it is full of rude tourist and bars. I am in love with Tampa and the surrounding areas with their traditions. It has also grown a lot and you have to find your witchy tribe, but they are there.

I have family in Cocoa. I never said Cocoa’s community or members are “witchy”. What I mean when I list vacation spots is where witches might enjoy vacationing. And BTW, one of my family members in Cocoa is very much a spiritual/witchy person. So it’s all in your perspective.

The United States’ Most Mystical Places to Visit

Joshua Tree California

Some places have a certain energy: You feel it the moment you arrive—or, in some cases, the moment you even begin to think about visiting. And while some of those places—like Machu Picchu, Easter Island , or the temples of Tibet —are known worldwide as destinations where spiritual seekers, vortex hunters, and healers gather, there are places even closer to home that hold a similar cosmic draw. Below, a look some of the United States’ most mystical places to visit.

Creative types began flocking to the remote region near Joshua Tree National Park in the ’60s, and many of that decade’s bohemian spiritual leanings remain. Located where the Mojave and Colorado Deserts meet, the surreal landscape is punctuated with gnarled Yucca trees, formidable rock formations, and pastel-shaded sunsets—and sure to lull anyone into a meditative state. And if the scenery doesn’t do it, the sound bath at the famed Integratron will. Where to Stay: The High Desert House or The Joshua Tree House

Mount Shasta California

This dormant volcano in northern California is believed to be one of the strongest energy vortexes in North America, and tales of its unexplained mysteries abound—one legend even claims that a hidden city filled with advanced beings from a lost continent hides beneath its peaks. Visitors report feeling “drawn” to the mountain, with overwhelming feelings of lightness and peace coming over them in its presence. Where to Stay: McCloud Hotel

For strong cosmic vibes, head to the state of Utah, which is now home to eight of the best places to stargaze in the United States. This year, Cedar Breaks National Monument —a stunning park with 10,000-foot-high vistas—was granted International Dark Sky Park status, a designation reserved only for places with the darkest night skies. Where to Stay: Point Supreme Campground

St Augustine Florida

When it comes to historic, haunting American cities, New Orleans and Savannah, Georgia, have well-cemented reputations. But the title of America’s oldest city actually belongs to St. Augustine, which was founded in 1565. Of course, a place with over 500 years of human history is bound to hold its share of mysteries: Residents claim that the city’s iconic lighthouse, Historic District, and the alleged site of Ponce de León’s Fountain of Youth are all hotbeds of spiritual energy. Where to Stay: The Collector Inn

Dramatic views, crashing waves, active volcanoes: The forces of nature are on dynamic display on the Big Island. Many of the Hawaiian Islands’ most sacred monuments and temples—Honaunau National Park, Kealakekua Bay, Mookini Heaiau State Monument—are located on the Big Island, which is also said to be the home of Pele, the volcano goddess. Where to Stay: The Fern Forest Tree House

Sedona Arizona

The tranquil desert town surrounded by otherworldly red mountains is a famed center of the New Age movement, with a multitude of energy vortexes, crystal shops, and healing centers. Where to Stay: El Portal or Amara Resort

Crater Lake Oregon

Nearly everyone who has peered into the bright blue abyss that is the U.S.’s deepest lake (1,943 feet!) admits they’ve been moved by its stunning natural beauty; some even insist that the electromagnetic energy flowing from the lake is on par with that of sacred places like Tibet or Peru. But the Klamath tribes who populated the area had a more ominous perspective on the water-filled crater: They warned that looking too long into its depths would invite “death and lasting sorrow,” and only the tribe’s shaman was allowed to visit the lake. Nowadays, reports of UFO and Big Foot sightings are not uncommon. Where to Stay: Crater Lake Lodge

Spiritual seekers have long been drawn to this secluded town nestled in a valley below the Topa Topa mountains. Some swear it sits on an electromagnetic vortex; others claim the area’s hot springs have healing properties. Where to Stay: Ojai Rancho Inn

10 of the Most Spiritual Places in the US

06/05/2022 by Emily Becker 1 Comment

Spirituality is a deeply personal journey for each person. To say that one travel destination is somehow “more spiritual” than another truly depends on the individual. For some people, simply being in unobstructed nature feels deeply spiritual. For others, spiritual places are those with a rich history of worship or religious significance. These are all valid, because who are we to decide what is sacred to anybody?

That said, there are some places in the United States that are particularly spiritual, based on the types of travelers they attract, what they have to offer to seekers, and their history. I think it’s important to keep in mind that many of these are considered spiritual today because of the beliefs and practices of Native Americans, who have a special sacred bond with them. This is one of numerous reasons why it’s essential to visit each of these locations with the utmost respect for nature, and the native people who are considered its guardians.

If you’re looking to incorporate spirituality into your next trip within the US, consider any one of these magical places:

Table of Contents

1. Sedona, Arizona

most spiritual places in the us Sedona

As Sedona is part of one most powerful energy vortexes in the world , it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most spiritual spots in the country. Some believe that it encompasses a giant energy vortex — a large swirl of earthly energy — while others identify four key vortexes: at Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Boynton Canyon.

Sedona also represents a more New Age form of spirituality that focuses on things like energy healing , yoga, and sound baths. Here you’ll find an abundance of wellness spas, healing centers, yoga studios, and other spiritual businesses. There are also plenty of neat Airbnbs in Sedona that are particularly peaceful and have a healing energy.

Being surrounded by red-rock canyons, whimsical forests, and even a few waterfalls , the sheer fact that Sedona is so naturally beautiful might be enough for you to consider it a spiritual destination. From venturing to the bright turquoise waters at Havasu Falls nearby, to checking out the Chapel of the Holy Cross, to doing a sound-bath session, there are lots of spiritual things to do in Sedona for anyone looking to connect to nature, whatever higher spirit they believe in, or just themselves.

2. Big Island, Hawai’i

most spiritual places in the us hawaii

You could easily say that any one of the Hawaiian Islands are particularly spiritual in their own way, but there’s something extra special about the Big Island. The goddess Pele, who is responsible for Hawai’i’s fire and volcanic activity, is especially present there, as this is where four of the state’s active volcanoes reside. You can hike them at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, which is also an epic stargazing spot on a clear night.

Another spiritually charged location on the Big Island is the site of the Pu’u Loa petroglyphs , which is also within the same national park. This important historical site is incredibly important to Hawaiian spirituality, so don’t miss it.

In addition to the Big Island’s spectacular landscape and overall beauty, there are many destinations there for spiritual travelers. From retreat centers to yoga studios and historical sites where you can learn more about the island and its people, there are plenty of opportunities to find the connection you’re looking for.

3. Joshua Tree, California

most spiritual places in the us Joshua tree

As a hugely popular getaway from Los Angeles and San Diego, Joshua Tree receives all kinds of nature-loving visitors who come to see the namesake Joshua trees and surrounding desert. Many people find the desert to be spiritual, evoking a sense of mystery and magical allure. I mean, the Joshua trees themselves are kind of mystical, don’t you think?

For many years, people have also believed that Joshua tree attracts alien life forms. They’ve even built specific structures, like the Integratron building, to communicate with them. Nowadays, the Integratron is where you can go for an intense sound-healing session. There are other places with a similar feel in Joshua Tree as well, like the Desert Reset retreat and many yoga studios.

Whether you’re curious about aliens, dream of waking up to a desert view , or are searching for healing, you’re bound to find something spiritual in this special spot.

Find out what else there is to do in Joshua Tree National Park here.

4. Mount Shasta, California

Chakras 101: The Root Chakra

Mount Shasta in California has a reputation for being the Earth’s root chakra . That’s right, some believe that planet Earth has chakra energy centers just like the human body. Although mighty Shasta hasn’t erupted in 200-300 years, it’s still an active volcano and holds a great deal of energy. This concentration of energy, aka a vortex, is the reason why so many spiritual seekers visit the mountain.

Native Americans have long visited Mount Shasta to perform rituals and ceremonies dedicated to the Creator. These still happen today, but now you’ll see a more diverse group of people visiting for similar purposes. You’ll find reiki healers here, along with meditation teachers and other people hoping to help travelers on their healing journey.

5. Taos, New Mexico

most spiritual places in the us Taos

Taos, a small city in the high desert of New Mexico, is one of the oldest and most enchanting cities in the American West. In fact, Taos has been casting a magical spell on its visitors since Spanish colonists first arrived in 1540. There you’ll find many small adobe chapels that capture the essence of the town’s spirituality and date back hundreds of years.

Nowadays, Taos is home to one of the most innovative “biotecture” communities in the United States. It has over 70 homes, called earthships, which exist completely off the grid. It’s inspiring to experience a community dedicated to sustainability and safeguarding Mother Nature’s resources. There’s something quite spiritually healing to know that so many people are working hard to live more sustainably.

If you’re looking for a beautiful place for a meditation retreat, Taos just might be the spot for you. Retreat centers like Blue Sky Retreat and High Frequency Loft offer meditation, yoga, sound healing, and ecstatic dance.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe attracts a whole host of spiritual healers, body workers, yoga teachers, artists, and even psychics — and has been doing so for quite some time! Some say that it is the original spiritual capital of the United States, and I can’t blame them. There is an overall mystical vibe there, which is evident throughout the art galleries of Canyon Road, where I suggest you start exploring the city.

Just 30 minutes from downtown Santa Fe is the historical Santuario de Chimayó, a sacred place of worship that dates back to even before the shrine was built in 1813. Even if you aren’t Catholic or Christian, this holy site is said to have healing powers for anyone that visits.

Santa Fe is also home to a world-famous Buddhist monastery, the Upaya Institute and Zen Center . This spiritual center offers daily Zen meditation sessions, as well as other special events, talks, and retreats.

With this combination of Buddhist philosophy, Catholic sacred sites, Native American spirituality, and New Age practices, you can see that Santa Fe has something for almost any kind of spiritual journey.

7. Crater Lake, Oregon

most spiritual places in the us Oregon

What is now Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the entire country, was once volcanic Mount Mazama. Due to a spectacular eruption, the mountain essentially blew its top off and became the giant crater that we see today. Eventually it filled with water, which is how we now have the beautiful and sacred Crater Lake.

For hundreds of years, if not thousands, the lake has been a holy site for Native Americans, particularly the Klamath tribe. Making dangerous and heroic spirit quests to the lake has been part of Klamath traditions for centuries and still continues to this day.

Visiting Crater Lake National Park can be a deeply spiritual experience, just for the sake of spending time in nature by the lake. You won’t find many retreat centers here, like you will in other places on this list. That said, this ideal for travelers who feel most spiritual when connecting with nature.

8. Moab, Utah

most spiritual places in the us Moab

Just a 15-minute drive from the entrance to magical Arches National Park , Moab has one of the most otherworldly landscapes you’ll find in the United States. Look around and marvel at Mother Nature’s work of art. You’ll see pristine arches, plunging canyons, and other rock formations that are as puzzling as they are beautiful.

These formations in Moab at Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park (also nearby) are deeply sacred to Native American communities, who worship them as beings and protectors of the Earth. The peace brought by the desert inspires spiritualists to come and connect with Mother Nature through meditation, sound healing, and other ceremonies.

Red Moon Lodge is a bed-and-breakfast retreat with special spaces dedicated to yoga, meditation, and prayer. The whole place is solar-powered and dedicated to sustainability. This is another big plus for those of you who want to experience the spiritual magic of Moab in a more eco-conscious fashion.

9. Bahá’í House of Worship, Wilmette, Illinois

most spiritual places in the us

Just 20 minutes from Chicago is the beautifully ornate Bahá’í House of Worship in Wilmette, Illinois. It is the only Bahá’í temple in the United States, and it attracts worshipers from all faiths. The Bahá’í faith itself includes teachings from all of the major religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. The basic teachings of Bahá’ísm include the oneness of humanity, racial and social justice, and other important pillars.

The temple itself is a meeting place for people of all faiths, not just Bahá’ís. I’ve been to the temple a few times. I think it’s a beautiful site which embraces all people regardless of identity. The inside is just as ornate as the outside and remains silent when there are no events going on. It’s a wonderful spot to spend a day reflecting, journaling, or engaging in whatever type of worship that suits you.

10. St. Augustine, Florida

most spiritual places in the us

As America’s oldest city, it’s no surprise that Saint Augustine has quite an interesting narrative. With over 500 years of human history to behold, it has a reputation of having several highly spiritual sites. One of them is Juan Ponce de León’s alleged “fountain of youth.” This is where the Spanish conquistador believed he found an indigenous secret to immortality. The Timucua tribes who lived in the area before the Spanish conquest convinced Ponce de León of the fountain’s magical properties, which is one of the reasons why America’s first-ever Catholic mission was built there.

Even though much of the legend behind the fountain of youth remains a mystery, the old-timey feel of Saint Augustine offers a magical experience. The Spanish architecture and ancient churches add to the mystical quality of the city, making this a very spiritual place for many visitors.

I don’t know about you, but a trip to any of these places sounds like an amazing way to recharge my spiritual battery. I feel especially connected to nature in sites that have a special spiritual significance.

What makes somewhere especially spiritual to you?

40 Fascinating Places You Won't Believe Are in the United States

Get ready to plan your next vacation.

mono lake tufa reflection

One of the best things about the United States is how diverse the landscape is. Just about every type of ecosystem can be found here, from swamps to deserts to glaciers and more. Similarly, the population is incredibly diverse, which leads to fascinating developments — like towns and homes built to look as if they came from abroad. As a result, you can find some pretty unbelievable places across the country, both natural and manmade. We picked some of the most striking of them all to share with you — from lunar-like landscapes to European-style castles in the American countryside.

White Sands National Park

white sands national monument, new mexico

One of the newest national parks, White Sands in New Mexico, is a surreal field of stark white dunes, some up to 60 feet tall. They're not made of sand, but of gypsum — and this is the largest gypsum desert in the world.

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch

sea of color spreads out at flower fields of carlsbad ranch

If you prefer a more colorful backdrop for your photoshoot, visit the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch in California. There are 50 acres full of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers in all hues.

Leavenworth, Washington

No passport? No problem. Head to Leavenworth, Washington to feel as if you've been transported to Germany. The town mimics a Bavarian village, complete with an Oktoberfest celebration each fall.

If you're looking to visit this impressive sandstone rock formation in Arizona, near the border of Utah, you're going to have to work for it. Very few permits are issued to visitors seeking to make the six-mile out-and-back hike — you have to be really lucky to score one.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

There’s something incredibly humbling about standing next to a 300-foot-tall sequoia tree, which is exactly what you can do in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. They're located in California's Sierra Nevada mountains, and you can find the famous General Grant tree here.

The Biltmore Estate

Mendenhall ice caves.

Alaska's Mendenhall Glacier holds a secret inside: Beautiful blue ice caves that glow with ethereal light. Fortunately for visitors, they're relatively easy to access. The glacier is just 12 miles from Juneau, and you can book guided hikes to the caves.

Grand Prismatic Spring

Located in the Wyoming portion of Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest hot spring in the country and the third largest in the world. Its rainbow hues are created by heat-loving microorganisms drawn to the 160-degree-Fahrenheit water — this is very much a case of "look, but don't touch."

The Met Cloisters

If you came across these buildings and assumed you were in Europe, you wouldn't be entirely wrong. Four historic cloisters from France were disassembled, shipped around the world, and reassembled in New York City. They're now home to the medieval branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Bonneville Salt Flats

Head west from Salt Lake City, Utah to find a salt-themed natural attraction: the Bonneville Salt Flats. This popular photoshoot destination occupies 300,000 acres of Utah's desert, every square inch covered in a flat salt crust.

Death Valley National Park

California is home to some of the harshest environments in the United States, including Death Valley, where the temperature has reached 134 degrees Fahrenheit. But despite its extreme heat, the area is also extremely picturesque with colorful rock formations, such as the ones at Zabriskie Point, shown here.

St. Augustine

St. Augustine, Florida looks as if it was picked up from the Mediterranean and shipped overseas. Many of the town's buildings feature Spanish-style architecture, a nod to its Spanish colonial period in the 16th century.

Hoh Rain Forest

It's easy to forget that the United States is home to a rain forest, largely because it's not in a tropical climate. The Hoh Rain Forest is a temperate one in Washington's Olympic National Park, where many surfaces — including trees — are blanketed in thick moss.

Portland Japanese Garden

The Portland Japanese Garden in Oregon has been hailed as "the most beautiful and authentic Japanese garden in the world outside of Japan" by Nobuo Matsunaga, the former Ambassador of Japan to the United States. The garden's 12 acres once belonged to a zoo!

One of the oldest lakes in the country, formed an estimated 1 million years ago , Mono Lake in California is extremely salty. It's known for its limestone tufa tower formations, which jut out of the lake.

Molokini Crater

Look down as you're flying into Kahului Airport on Maui, Hawaii, and you might spot this crescent-shaped island in the sea. This is the Molokini Crater, a former volcano that's now one of the best snorkeling and diving destinations in the Hawaiian Islands.

Pella, Iowa

The town of Pella, Iowa is very proud of its Dutch heritage. How can you tell? Downtown is home to the tallest working grain windmill in the country. There's also the Molengracht Canal, which is reminiscent of Amsterdam's own canal system — it's even lined with Amsterdam-style architecture!

Sequim, Washington

No, these fragrant lavender fields are not in the south of France. They're found in Sequim, Washington, which hosts an annual lavender festival each summer.

Castello di Amorosa

A medieval building and vineyards? This must be Italy! Or ... California's Napa Valley. Castello di Amorosa winery was inspired by 13th-century Tuscan architecture.

Crater Lake

Crater Lake, the namesake and highlight of Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, is set in the caldera of an ancient volcano. At nearly 2,000 feet deep, it's the deepest lake in the United States.

One needn’t journey far to find a little magic. From actual castles to charming villages to places inspired by legend, there are plenty of stateside spots that embody that fairytale feeling. If you’re hoping to bring some sparkle, joy, or intrigue into your travels, read on to discover nine fairytale destinations you can visit right here in the U.S.

The Biltmore, North Carolina

magical places to visit in usa

The crown jewel of Asheville , the Biltmore Estate is more akin to a European castle than a southern estate. Since the Gilded Age mansion was built by George and Edith Vanderbilt, it drips with the grandeur of old money royalty. The grounds, which are filled with manicured gardens and tranquil walking trails, are as enchanting as the palace itself. To save the best for last, head to the conservatory at the end of your day. With its glass-roofed building, blooming exotic plants, and model train system, this indoor garden transports you to another world.

Crater Lake, Oregon

magical places to visit in usa

Witnessing Crater Lake in person feels otherworldly, but did you know the famed geological phenomenon is also based in legend? The Klamath people, a Native American tribe of southern Oregon, have maintained a 7,000-year-old oral tradition about the lake’s formation. According to Klamath lore , the lake was created during a battle between two dueling worlds. The legend also claims that to look upon the lake may cause premature death. Of course, many people have witnessed Crater Lake and lived to tell the tale, which is lucky since this is one natural wonder you won't want to miss.

Ice Castles, Utah

magical places to visit in usa

The Ice Castles of Midway, Utah, are the embodiment of a winter wonderland. Visiting these cavernous, handmade icicle forts feels like walking into a fairytale of the Frozen variety — a detail that also makes it family-friendly. Kids will love exploring the frozen crevices and playing on the slippery slides made entirely of ice. Adults will be enchanted by the beauty of the blue icicles and the nighttime show of lights. Regardless of your age, the temperatures will be frosty, so dress appropriately.

Sleepy Hollow, New York

magical places to visit in usa

If you love a good scary story, a visit to Sleepy Hollow, New York , may be in order. Back in 1819, this small village inspired Washington Irving to write his famous short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Although Ichabod Crane and the headless horseman are fictional, the modern-day village of Sleepy Hollow continues to embrace its mythical past. If this sounds up your alley, make your pilgrimage during the fall. From October to November, Philipsburg Manor hosts the Horseman’s Hollow , a weekly event that recreates the ghostly tale and includes a spooky tour of the nearby cemetery.

Boldt Castle, New York

Boldt Castle on a sunny day.

Not only does Boldt Castle look like a fairytale castle, but it’s also based upon a fairytale romance. Built by George C. Boldt for his beloved wife Louise, the castle was meant to be a romantic, summertime paradise on the St. Lawrence River. Sadly, not all fairytales have happy endings — Mrs. Boldt passed away unexpectedly before the house was finished. Mr. Boldt ordered construction to stop and the beautiful estate remained empty for 73 years. On a happier note, the castle was rehabilitated for the public in the 1970s and visitors are allowed to tour the castle and its grounds today.

Pipiwai Trail, Hawaii

magical places to visit in usa

Located in Maui’s Haleakalā National Park, Pipiwai Trail is nothing short of magical. The two-mile trail meanders over footbridges, past waterfalls, and through forestland. Photo opportunities include a massive banyan tree that is straight out of a storybook and the ethereal, bamboo forest that looms into the sky. The trail ends at Waimoku Falls, a 400-foot-high waterfall that cascades over a sheer rock cliff. This hike is sure to make you feel very far from home, in the best way possible.

Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

magical places to visit in usa

If your favorite fairytale involves sandy beaches, warm breezes, and a glass of fine wine, Carmel-by-the-Sea is for you. Located along the coast of central California, this seaside village has heaps of Old World charm. In lieu of street addresses, residential homes go by names like “Nutcracker” and “Rosebud Cottage.”  The downtown’s Tudor-style architecture resembles real-life gingerbread houses, which gives the place a refreshing air of whimsy. Best of all, the residents are welcoming and the village is pet-friendly. It’s the kind of place you may never want to leave.

Sitka, Alaska

magical places to visit in usa

It’s reasonable to say that Alaska, with its soaring mountains and pristine landscapes, feels like a faraway land in a fairytale. But Sitka , a seaside village on Baranof Island, may have an edge over the rest of the state. The village culture is a hodgepodge of Russian, American, and Tlingit tribe traditions, which gives the town its delightfully quirky vibe. From the New Archangel Dancers of the Russian tradition to the Totem Trail , a one-mile forest walk lined with totem poles, the town’s diversity makes it thoroughly enchanting to outsiders.

Skagit Valley, Washington

magical places to visit in usa

If walking through fields of blooming tulips isn’t on your bucket list, it certainly should be. Every April, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival turns the landscape of northern Washington into a rainbow. Whether or not you’re a flower fanatic , the region’s brilliant blooms and staggering peaks will make you feel like you’ve found the proverbial pot of gold.  If you have the time, the festival hosts plenty of fun events all month long, from bike tours to barbecues to chili cook-offs. Touring popular farms such as RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town should also be in order, but be prepared for large crowds on the weekend.

For a Spiritual Retreat:

Kaua’i sacred places, hawaii.

If you spot flowers or leis on the ground while visiting Kauai, you may have stumbled on an offering at one of the island’s many ancient sacred sites. One such place is Honopu Beach. Ancient Hawaiians believed their chiefs’ bones gained supernatural power after death. So, warriors would climb the Honopu cliffside with the bodies of their deceased leaders to hide them in caves. To ensure the location remained secret, they would then jump to their deaths. Honopu beach remains difficult to reach today, there are no pathways to the area. You will either need to swim 400 yards to reach it or appreciate it from a distance via boat.

mount shasta california

Mount Shasta, California

Considered a sacred site by many indigenous communities, Mount Shasta is a majestic mountain located in Northern California. Legend has it that the mountain is home to a powerful vortex of energy and serves as an interdimensional portal that can transport people to other dimensions and realms. The legend of the mountain’s energy vortex dates back to ancient times when Native American tribes considered it a place of spiritual significance. Visitors can take guided tours to learn more about the spiritual significance of the mountain or simply enjoy its natural beauty through hiking trails, waterfalls, and hot springs in the surrounding area. Whether you believe in its mystical qualities or not, Mount Shasta’s stunning landscape alone is worth the trip.

Kukaniloko Birthstones, Hawaii

The Kukaniloko Birthstones is a sacred site located in the “piko” of O’ahu, Hawaii (the center of the island said to possess focused spiritual energy). This mystical destination was once used as a birthing site for members of the Hawaiian royal families. It is one of the most important cultural sites in Hawaii. The area is marked with 180 stones, symbolizing the birthplaces of many high-ranking chiefs and ali’i (nobility). The Kukaniloko Birthstones are also an ideal spot for stargazing thanks to its remote location away from light pollution. Researchers even speculate that the rocks were arranged for astrological orientation — a Pacific Island Stonehenge of sorts.

crater lake

Crater Lake, Oregon

Crater Lake in southern Oregon is another mystical destination that shouldn’t be missed. Known for its crystal-clear blue water, this lake was formed more than 7,000 years ago when Mount Mazama erupted and collapsed. Many Native American tribes consider the lake to be a sacred site and believe that it’s inhabited by powerful and benevolent spirits who are often called upon for guidance, protection, and healing. Visitors can hike around the rim of the crater or take a boat tour to Wizard Island, a small volcanic island in the center of the lake. The area also offers opportunities for camping, fishing, and stargazing under some of the darkest skies in the country. Whether you’re seeking spiritual inspiration or simply want to connect with nature, Crater Lake is a must-see destination.

For a Meditative Experience:

japanese gardens florida

Morikami Japanese Gardens, Florida

Morikami’s series of gardens mirror the major periods of Japanese landscape design. From the zigzagging bridges of the Hein period to the stone Kotoji lanterns of the Meiji era, it makes an ideal setting for introspection. After strolling the paths along its grounds, koi-filled lake, and worldclass bonsai collection, explore different forms of meditation at the rock garden and the Seishin-an Tea House. While Karesansui raking can clear the mind of distractions, an Omotesenke-style tea ceremony teaches mindfulness through a carefully choreographed ritual involving all the senses.

Hot Springs, Arkansas

Hot Springs, Arkansas is a mystical destination that has been revered for centuries. The warm, healing, natural hot springs have long been used by Native American tribes for medicinal purposes. Today, visitors can soak in these restorative waters at bathhouses throughout the city, including historic ones like Buckstaff Bathhouse and Quapaw Baths & Spa . Along with its natural wonders, Hot Springs also boasts a rich history as a gangster hideout during the Prohibition era. And as the hometown of former president Bill Clinton. Visitors can explore the history of this charming city on foot. You can also take a tour on one of the downtown trolleys.

taos new mexico pueblo

Taos, New Mexico

Taos Pueblo is an ancient, 1000-year-old building belonging to a Native American tribe of Puebloan people. The pueblo has been continuously inhabited since its construction, making it a living ancient village. Taos Pueblo is a designated National Historic . Intricate pottery and paintings decorate many parts of the pueblo, adding to its mystical atmosphere. This enchanting destination is also surrounded by areas of natural beauty, such as the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.

For an Archaeological Pilgrimage:

Mesa verde, colorado.

Another archaeological site not to be missed is Mesa Verde, an ancient cliff dwelling tucked beneath a craggy overhang. This rocky residence is sacred to today’s native Americans. One Puebloan park ranger describe it as the place “where the ancestors whisper to you.” Pay close attention to the kivas — round, underground rooms used for religious dances and other ceremonial practices. The baseball-sized holes near the firepit represented the portal through which the ancestors emerged from the underworld.

Chaco Canyon, New Mexico

Chaco Canyon in New Mexico is a mystical place that dates back over a thousand years. The area is home to the ruins of an ancient Pueblo civilization that built remarkable structures using stone, mud, and timber. These structures are an astronomical wonder due to their precise alignment with the sun and stars. Chaco Canyon also has a network of roads that connect different buildings, showing the advanced planning skills of those who lived there thousands of years ago. The park also celebrates cosmically themed events like the annual Astronomy Festival, the spring and fall equinox, and the summer and winter solstice

Bear Butte, South Dakota

Bear Butte is an ancient, sacred area where Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and many other Native Americans past and present have performed vision quests and other ceremonies. Its majestic peak rises above the plains of South Dakota and draws visitors from all over the world. The site has long been a place of spiritual healing and reflection. There are many ancient trails and valleys to explore, from easy strolls through the valley to more challenging hikes up the mountain. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of places to stop and take in the views.

For a Glimpse of the Otherworldly:

Yellowstone national park, wyoming.

This US national park is one of the most awe-inspiring destinations in America. From hot springs and waterfalls to geysers and wildlife, you can experience many wonders of nature amidst this ancient landscape. Hot springs are a great way to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. While visiting, don’t miss the famous Grand Prismatic Spring. It’s an intricate mosaic of vibrant colors created by various species of heat-loving microscopic organisms living in its waters. Yellowstone is a beautifully bizarre hydrothermal and geologic hodgepodge of mineral structures resembling frozen waterfalls, erupting geysers, and hot spring pools with rainbow rings. If there’s another place on earth that resembles an alien planet more, we’ve yet to encounter it.

northern lights in the us

The Northern Lights, Fairbanks, Alaska

For supernatural wonders, visit Fairbanks, Alaska, considered the best place to witness the northern lights in the States. It’s no wonder these awe-inspiring curtains of color rippling in waves across the heavens can be found in mythology across many early groups. The ancient Chinese believed Aurora Borealis signified dragons battling in the celestial realm. The Estonians thought the phenomenon indicated sleighs ferrying guests to a heavenly wedding celebration. The Inuit of Hudson Bay in Canada assumed it to be demons with lanterns chasing lost souls. Whereas the Inuit of Northern Greenland believed it meant spirits of the dead were playing games with a walrus skull.

Joshua Tree, California

Joshua Tree, California is a mystical place featuring unique natural beauty and otherworldly experiences. The area is known for its stunning rock formations that resemble something out of a sci-fi movie. Visitors can hike through the Joshua Tree National Park and explore the boulder-strewn landscapes dotted with twisted Joshua trees – an experience like no other. Many people also visit Joshua Tree for stargazing due to the area’s clear skies and minimal light pollution. During the day, visitors can also immerse themselves in the local art scene or participate in mindfulness retreats at one of the many spiritual centers in the area. If you’re looking for a mystical journey that combines natural wonders with transcendental experiences, Joshua Tree is definitely worth adding to your list of mystical places to visit in the United States.

Sedona, Arizona

Sedona, Arizona is a mystical place that has been attracting visitors for many years. The area is known for its stunning red rock formations and peaceful, spiritual energy. Visitors can go on guided tours to learn about these vortexes and participate in meditation or yoga practices in these sacred areas. Additionally, Sedona also offers beautiful hiking trails and art galleries showcasing local artists. If you’re looking for a serene and spiritual retreat, try one of the healing spas offering treatments such as crystal therapy and reiki .

For Something on the Spookier Side

Savannah, georgia.

Savannah, Georgia is a captivating and historic city shrouded in mystery and intrigue. One of the city’s main draws is its plethora of ghost stories, which have been passed down for generations. Visitors can take guided tours to explore haunted mansions and hear chilling tales about the city’s dark past. But Savannah also offers much more than just spooky legends! It’s home to numerous beautiful parks, fascinating museums, and stunning architecture that will leave you in awe. One must-visit destination in Savannah is Forsyth Park. It is a 30-acre oasis with fountains, walking paths, and plenty of open spaces for picnicking or relaxing. Another popular attraction is River Street. There visitors can stroll along the cobblestone streets lined with shops, restaurants, and art galleries while enjoying breathtaking views of the Savannah River.

haunted new orleans

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is certainly one of the State’s spookier destinations. If you take the Bad Bitches Ghost Tour (by Ghost City Tours) , you’ll learn of the city’s Voodoo Priestess Marie Laveau and the homicidal Madame LaLaurie. Supposedly, the baroque-style LaLaurie mansion with its wrought iron balconies is one of the most haunted buildings in the States. And it’s not the only local spot with ghostly sightings. Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar is said to be frequented by a phantom French-American pirate who used the shop as a cover for his illegal smuggling business.

Skinwalker Ranch, Utah

Located south of Ballard, Utah is the legendary Skinwalker Ranch. Many indigenous tribes and cultures believe the area has powerful supernatural forces at work. It has been home to numerous reported UFO and paranormal sightings over the years. The most famous of these sightings is the Phoenix Lights , which was witnessed by thousands of people in 1997. The lights seen in the sky over Phoenix, Arizona were described as a V-shaped formation of lights that moved slowly across the sky. Other reported sightings include mysterious objects hovering in the air, strange lights in the sky, and even reports of alien abductions. Take the time to explore this mysterious and fascinating place, if you can brave it!

20 Magical Secret Spots And Hidden Gems In The U.S.

August 8, 2020 //  by  Follow Me Away //   1 Comment

When looking for some magical places to visit, there are some amazing hidden gems in the U.S – some might even be on your doorstep! The US is so huge and has such a wide variety of hidden gems that there will be something for anyone whether you’re looking for the earth’s natural wonders or a cute little town.

The great thing about hidden gems and secret spots is that they can often be a lot quieter because not many people know about them. They’re great for whether you’re planning a road trip, vacation, or just want to get out and explore something new – these spots are a great place to start.

one of the best hidden gems in america

Fly Geyser, Nevada

When you think of Nevada, your mind might immediately go to Las Vegas and the iconic Las Vegas strip. However, Nevada is also home to some beautiful hidden gems in the U.S. such as Fly Geyser.

Fly Geyser is a small geothermal, colorful geyser located on Fly Ranch. This six-foot-tall natural structure that spews boiling water over five feet in the air looks like it crash-landed on earth from a spaceship. But don’t worry, it’s not an alien. The main geyser was created accidentally in 1964, after a test well as improperly plugged or left uncapped. Subsequently, the hot water from the well resulted in calcium carbonate deposits beginning to form, growing several inches each year.

It truly is a sight to behold! It’s important to note that Fly Geyser is located on private land, but you can make reservations to go on tours to see it.

But there’s a variety of outdoor activities you can do too. From tubing to ziplining or visiting Anna Ruby Falls, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Also, check on Helen’s website so you can see what kind of events they hold every year. In Summer, they hold to the oldest balloon event in the region!

You would be right in thinking that Dry Tortugas National Park is a little strange looking. I mean it’s seven small islands and is home to Fort Jefferson, which was used as a prison in the Civil War. But there’s so much more to Dry Tortugas National Park than just the history. It’s known for its abundance of sea life, tropical birds, coral reefs that are some of the least disturbed in Florida Keys and even legends of shipwrecks.

Whether you fancy learning a bit of history, going snorkeling, birdwatching, or sunbathing on the super remote beaches, Dry Tortugas National Park is bound to amaze you! It’s only accessible by boat or seaplane, and even offer guided tours of Fort Jefferson

These canyons were created by poor farming practices back in the 1800s, but today it’s regarded as one of the most picturesque locations in the state. With gorgeous red tones against the lushness of the greens, this place would be great for a photographer.

There’s around 10 miles of hiking trails, some even go to the canyon floor. There’s different levels of difficulty and you can even bring your dog with you as long as they stay on a leash. However, you don’t have to even hike to visit Providence Canyon State Park, you can here and take advantage of the picnic areas and the playgrounds with your family.

Cummins Falls Tennesee

Cummins Falls is located in Cummins Falls State Park. This hidden gem in the U.S. is the eighth largest Tennesee waterfall sitting at 75 feet high and boy, does this waterfall not disappoint!

Bodie, California

Bodie is a perfect hidden gem in the U.S for lovers of the paranormal. It’s one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the states and was once home to more than 10,000 gold-seekers. Now, over 200 structures are still standing.

It definitely provides a pretty eerie experience. And unlike other ghost towns in the states, you can wander around this one freely to explore it yourself. It’s a town frozen in time with a focus on preserving the remaining buildings rather than restoring them. It’s a great place to visit if you’re looking for great photo opportunities or wanting to step back in time.

Bodie is a perfect hidden gem in the U.S for lovers of the paranormal

Thor’s Well, Oregon

This hidden gem in the US is located on the Central Oregon Coast in Cape Perpetua. It can look a bit daunting – at high tide, it looks like a giant bottomless hole that’s draining the entire ocean.

However, the reality isn’t as scary as it looks. Its really just a hole in a rock formation that’s around 20 feet deep to form a sea cave, and the illusion is created by the hole constantly overflowing and refilling itself. But it looks super cool!

Naturally, the appearance of Thor’s Well changes depending on the tide. At low tide, Thor’s Well looks a lot less aggressive and is pretty calm. Therefore if you want to see Thor’s Well in all of its glory, it’s best to go between one hour before high tide and one hour after. it’s a great little stop to make on an Oregon road trip.

Now, this is a different type of hidden gem in the U.S. Meow Wolf was set up in 2008 as an artist collective by a group of young residents hoping to supply Santa Fe with an alternative form of art. In 2016, they opened their first permanent installation ‘House of Eternal Return’. It’s storytelling in art form and is so beautiful.

People describe the installation as a real-life ‘Alice in Wonderland’ experience for its ability to transport you to a magical world made up of neon lights and something different around every corner. It’s something that you need to experience for yourself to really take it all in!

We hope you enjoy this list of hidden gems in the U.S. and hope you find something that you can explore for yourself. There are so many hidden, secret places that may not be as well known that are definitely worth seeing as they’re all beautiful in their own way.

20 Most Charming Towns in the US

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I'll receive a commission if you purchase through my link, at no extra cost to you. Please see my legal page for more details.

Strolling the streets of one of the many charming towns in the US is a wonderful way to spend a day. These quaint places often have an interesting history, beautiful buildings, and some fabulous boutique shopping.

Must Visit Charming US Towns

Visiting one of these unique US towns makes for a lovely way to spend a weekend away. Many of them are particularly stunning in fall; if you love to experience the vibrant fall foliage, check out my top fall foliage weekend getaways in the US !

1. Stanley, Idaho

For someone who loves visiting small towns, Stanley is like one of the best-kept secrets of Idaho. I have been to several other adorable towns while  traveling in the United States , but Stanley is one that I would go back to any time.

There is a long list of things that you can do in Stanley, especially if you love the outdoors. And all your experiences will be pretty intimate, since, with less than a hundred residents, it’s rarely crowded.

There are many primitive hot springs; you can find a tiny tub on the Salmon River and The Basin Creek Hot Springs and Sunbeam Hot Springs are also well worth a visit.

The Redfish lake, a gorgeous alpine lake surrounded by the Sawtooth Mountains, is lined by beaches where you can have a picnic. You can also rent a kayak or stand up paddleboard if you fancy taking to the water.

If you love hiking, there is no shortage of trails in Stanley, my favorite is the hike to Hell Roaring Lake! Alternatively, you can try river rafting; there are half and full-day trips on the Salmon River that for a great adventure through the Idaho wilderness.

There are lots of cozy lodges to stay at in Stanley, I particularly recommend Redfish Lake Lodge. For the more adventurous, you can also camp in the wilderness!

2. Bar Harbor, Maine

If you are looking for a charming town set among mountains and the ocean, look no further than Bar Harbor, Maine. Located less than five hours north of Boston, Bar Harbor has a population of just over 5,500. Many visitors make their way to this seaside town each year to experience the coastal beauty.

Luxurious inns along with cozy bed and breakfasts abound providing a lovely home base as you tour the town. Eat fresh seafood at a variety of delightful restaurants. Take a lobster boat tour out on the deep water. Shop the many boutique stores lining the streets. Walk to beautiful Bar Island during low tide – the only time this spot becomes accessible.

If a little adventure is what you are after, explore adjacent  Acadia National Park . One of America’s most-visited national parks, Acadia offers plenty of outdoor fun and beauty. Hiking, biking and swimming are just some of the activities to embark on in the park. Watching the sunrise at the top of Cadillac Mountain is a must-do as this spot is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and the first place to view the sunrise from fall through spring.

Whether you want relaxation or adventure, the town of Bar Harbor has it all while exuding charm at every turn.

3. Golden, Colorado

If a charming town in the US is what you’re after, then you must look into visiting the quaint mountain town of Golden, CO! Located a short 20-minute drive from Denver, Golden feels like a world away. It’s the perfect place for a mountain getaway from the city (without the super long drive to get there).

One of the best  things to do in Golden, CO  is to visit Main Street and take in all the locally owned shops, galleries, restaurants, and more. It’s the perfect place to walk and shop while enjoying the gorgeous mountain setting. Be sure to check out Golden’s iconic welcome arch spanning Main Street – it’s a great backdrop for a commemorative photo! Local restaurant favorites include Café 13, D’Deli, Tributary, and Woody’s – you really can’t go wrong with any of them.

And many people might not know this, but Golden, CO is the world’s biggest little beer town, brewing more beer (by volume) than any other city in the  world ! Coors got their start here (back in the late 1800s), and they still operate the world’s largest single-site brewery there today.

You can tour the facility to learn the history that put them on the map while sampling the fruits of their labor. If craft brews are more your thing, Golden has you covered there also! Locals love sipping suds in the beer garden at Golden City Brewery. Or check out the killer eats AND brews at Barrels & Bottles Brewery.

4. Everglades City, Florida

The city of Everglades is a charming fishing village with a population of 443 people, with great food and a long history. It is known as the fishing and stone crab capital of Southwest Florida. The Everglade City is located on the western gateway to Everglades National Park, nearby Chokoloskee Island. It is only a 1:30 hour drive from Miami, and it makes a great day trip visit, and it is absolute heaven for lovers of outdoor activities with loads of nature, many hiking trails to choose from, and water activities like kayaking and the traditional airboat.

You can explore the historic city of Everglades City and Chokoloskee Island by car, bicycle, or on foot, and are able to appreciate up close a legendary past such as visiting buildings from the 1920s.

Another must-visit place during your trip to the Everglades City is the  Ten Thousand Islands Wildlife Refuge , the second largest mangrove forest in the world forming fascinating labyrinths of water and islands with very rich wildlife, including some endangered species.

Make sure to stop at the Smallest Post Office in the USA that is located in Ochopee .  This closet-sized, 7×8-foot building used to be an irrigation pipe shed for a tomato farm, which also housed the post office in 1953.

Signature events in Everglades City include the annual Everglades Seafood Festival in early February and Calusa Days in March at Everglades National Park’s Gulf Coast Visitor Center. In Everglades City, you can find shops, restaurants, motels, a museum, and even a very small airport. There are also places to rent canoes, kayaks, or bicycles, and you can take boat and airboat tours from the marina.

5. Joseph, Oregon

In Northeast Oregon, the tiny town of Joseph is a strange outlier among what are mostly sleepy, dusty towns in this part of the American West. Joseph, though home to only about one thousand people, is an exception with a lively local culture and is one of the most charming towns in the United States.

Eastern Oregon is largely rural and sparsely populated. What the town of Joseph lacks in size it makes up for with charm and scenery. The setting is an idyllic one, with the architecture aptly designed in the style of the old American West and the beautiful Wallowa Mountains providing a gorgeous backdrop.

Among these buildings are a surprising amount of art galleries (particularly bronzeworks), plenty of good options for food, and no shortage of shopping. However, the real attraction of Joseph is the natural side of town.

Joseph is on the edge of the Wallowa Mountains. These mountains rise dramatically above the surrounding plains and rolling hills and offer a lot of outdoor options for visitors. There is a picturesque lake, wildlife, and enough hiking trails to last a lifetime. The wilderness area outside of Joseph is the largest in the entire state of Oregon.

Winter is beautiful in Joseph, but the high elevation, snow, and remote location could limit outdoor opportunities and make travel tedious. Summertime is the best season to visit Joseph, and it is a perfectly charming town to spend a couple of days when taking a road trip across the American West.

6. Nantucket, Massachusetts

Nantucket  is a picturesque island located 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Although the island is only 14 miles long, it makes up for what it lacks in size with infinite charm. Visitors will enjoy strolling the cobblestone streets, admiring exquisitely-restored pre-Civil war homes, and renting cruiser bikes to explore on two wheels. Alternatively, renting a car is an ideal way to explore more in a brief time.

Island-goers can’t miss the opportunity to visit at least one of Nantucket’s three iconic lighthouses, from charming Brant Point Lighthouse, to colorful Sankaty Head Light, to Jeep-accessible Great Point Lighthouse. Additionally, ocean enthusiasts will love strolling along the popular Sconset Bluff Walk. This two-mile pathway offers sweeping coastal views from behind gorgeous beach-front properties.

Travelers will also love browsing the boutiques along Nantucket Boat Basin and indulging in a succulent lobster roll and other seafood delicacies. Beer enthusiasts won’t be able to resist a visit to Cisco Brewers, the island’s exclusive craft brewery.

While Nantucket is arguably beautiful year-round, it’s best to visit during the spring and fall (shoulder season). During these times, hotel prices drop and visitors can enjoy reduced crowds. Summertime draws the most tourists and hotel costs will consequently spike. However, regardless of season, Nantucket is not a budget destination, so prepare accordingly. In addition, plan on spending at least one night on the island, as the ferry ride will drastically shorten a brief day trip. Hotel guests will especially love  White Elephant , the island’s luxurious resort.

7. Traverse City, Michigan

Traverse City is a charming town located in Michigan’s “pinky” region in Michigan’s lower peninsula. The city itself is nestled between the East and West Grand Traverse Bay giving visitors access to the beautiful Lake Michigan waters.  The best time to visit this area is in the summer months when the weather is nice and there are lots of activities to participate in! Inducing the National Cherry Festival which takes place each year in July.

Traverse City is known for its great food and wine tasting! This charming town is near Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula wine region, one of the four American Viticultural Areas within the state. Visitors can enjoy great Michigan wines at one of the  11 wineries located on Old Mission Peninsula and the 20+ on Leelanau Peninsula.

The town itself has a great shopping area on Front Street! Here you can find everything from handmade jewelry, clothes, outdoor gear and Traverse City Cherry products. There are also great restaurants downtown like Poppycock’s and Sparks BBQ. If you are looking for something a little different, then head on over to the Little Fleet. This is a group of food trucks that offer a variety of different food options plus a bar area with outdoor seating!

Near Traverse City, you also have several state parks where you can hike, swim, fish and camp. Visitors can also visit the nearby Turtle Creek Casino for a night of fun!

8. Provincetown, Massachusetts

The magical Provincetown at the northernmost edge of Cape Cod is about 2.5 hours’ drive from Boston or Providence, RI. This lovely town has everything you can wish for a fun weekend, all year long, though summertime is the most vibrant period. It is known for being a hot destination for the LGBTQ community, with many events and parties, and the pride flags all around give a warm welcome.

The main street, Commercial Street, is the place to walk between souvenir shops, art galleries and restaurants. Many of them are facing the water, so you get a meal with a great view of the pier and the bay. There are hotels and guesthouses around Commercial Street, but if you are looking for a quieter time, there are many more lodging options at the east or west ends of the town.

If you want to spend time at the beach, go to either Hearing Cove Beach to the west or Race Point Beach to the north. Another option is to drive to one of the beaches on the Cape Cod National Seashore, a 10-30 minute drive depending on which beach you aim for. Nature lovers can enjoy amazing views of the Cape Cod Bay (and some lighthouses), hiking or biking in the Beech Forest, or even go out to the ocean for whale watching.

A visit to Provincetown can be full of activities, or just a relaxing time on the beach. One thing is guaranteed – it will be fun.

9. Sedona, Arizona

Located in central Arizona is one of the most trendy destinations in the United States. Self-proclaimed as the most beautiful place on earth, Sedona is a small desert town that boasts hipster vibes, a vibrant creative arts community, and numerous wellness centers. Its mild climate makes it an all-year-round destination for everyone in the family. Sedona is a must-see on any Southwest USA road trip .

Surrounding Sedona is 400+ miles of hiking trails, many of them leading to gorgeous red rocks and sacred vortices. Many people believe that these vortices are powerful centers of energy with spiritual influences.

Other than the mysterious voices and gorgeous red rocks doting the desert landscapes, Sedona is home to many indigenous ruins and cave dwellings. Visitors will stumble upon many as they hike around Sedona, but they must not miss the Montezuma Castle National Monument, site of the cliff dwelling ruins of the Sinagua people dating back to the 12th century.

If you are an avid photographer, you will find nothing but paradise in Sedona. Known as one of the darkest night skies in the United States, glimmering stars dot the night skies. It is even possible to see the Milky Way with the naked eye. Stargazing is something you must-do in Sedona, Arizona.

Luckily for you, there are many  places to stay in Sedona  that will enhance your stargazing experiences. Many accommodations have an outdoor hot tub where you can soothe your aching limbs after a day of hiking and admire the starry sky at the same time!

10. Key West, Florida

When you’re looking for a charming town in the US to explore, hop a flight or plan a road trip to the last stop on Highway A1A, and celebrate in Key West, Florida!

Located off the mainland of southwest Florida 130 miles southwest of Miami, Key West is quite literally the Southernmost Point in the USA and just 90 miles from Cuba. For hundreds of years, this tropical outpost has been home to pirates, smugglers, jet setters and celebrities and its history has left its mark on everything from the local food to the charming architecture. You can hop on the Conch Tour Train and see most of the Old Town Bahamian-style conch houses and Victorian mansions in one afternoon.

A Key West vacation definitely means warm sun, Floribbean island food, a lively bar scene, and azure water everywhere. Snorkeling the offshore reef is one of everyone’s favorite  things to do in Key West followed by a spectacular sunset display at Mallory Square. Take a sunset cruise and enjoy all of this from the bow of a catamaran. Or see the town from a bird’s eye view and go parasailing for the afternoon.

At night, do the Duval Crawl, a DIY pub crawl stopping at some of Key West’s finest dive bars for a quick cocktail and live music. Then grab a table at one of the fabulous Cuban restaurants or choose Latitudes for a truly romantic evening. Key West is so full of tropical charm, you’ll be planning your return trip again and again

11. Boone, North Carolina

In the mountains of North Carolina, you’ll find many adorable towns to explore, with one of the best being Boone. This funky college town is home to Appalachian State University and there is no shortage of outdoor activities, delicious restaurants, and cute boutiques.

You won’t find a better place to hit the perfect hiking trail. There are so many options so everyone can find something that fits their fitness level. Some of my favorite hikes in the area are Linville Falls, Glen Burney Falls, and Rough Ridge on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Parkway is just a short drive away in case you want to view the scenery from the comfort of your car.

King Street is the main drag in Boone where you’ll find bars, restaurants, and boutiques to explore. Be sure to set aside some time to walk around town and look at the unique stores. The Horton Hotel is a new boutique hotel downtown where you’ll be pampered for your whole stay.

Boone is really a year-round destination. Each season brings something special. Spring for the flowers, summer for great weather, fall for the foliage, and winter for the snow. There are three ski mountains near Boone if you choose to visit in winter. This charming town has plenty to keep you busy for a long weekend at the least.

12. bayfield, wisconsin.

From kayaking to inspiring art galleries, Bayfield in Wisconsin is one of the most charming places in the US. Situated in northern Wisconsin and opposite Madeline Island, Bayfield offers versatile sites to tourists. There is a lot to do in the city, from experiencing inspiring crafts to camping in beautiful state parks of Wisconsin.

Whatever you ask for, either adventurous kayaking through famous Apostle Islands Sea caves or picking berries in the sunny field, the city has it all. If you want to relax and get rid of all the chaos, Bayfield is the perfect destination for you. It would be best if you visited this place in summers or fall as you can experience beautiful colors and can take a stroll through green fields.

The city offers a lot of activities and things that you can do upon your visit. Start your tour by visiting the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Centre. You can get some maps there and can understand its layout. When you are ready with your map, start with witnessing Houghton Falls State Natural Area. Dig your bare feet in the sand to relax and when it’s time for lunch, head to some popular restaurants like Pier Plaza, The Fat Radish, etc.

After lunch, spare some time to visit Bayfield Maritime Museum. And then, spend a peaceful night at one of the  best winter cabins in Wisconsin , I particularly recommend The Little Inn of Bayfield.

13. Joshua Tree, California

Take a road trip to one of the quirkiest desert towns in California. Joshua Tree is known for its incredible sunsets, uniquely shaped cacti, eccentric shops and a vibrant music scene. Located just 45 minutes from Palm Springs near Joshua Tree National Park, this bohemian town is the perfect spot for a weekend getaway.

Make a stop at Pioneertown, an Old West set that was used for films and TV shows in the 40s and 50s. A highlight is listening to live music at Pappy & Harriet’s, a famous saloon-style music venue and BBQ restaurant.

Admire the architecture of Monument House, a colorful cubist house that sits in the desert. It’s the perfect spot to take a picture.

If you love the outdoors, take a sunset hike in Joshua Tree National Park. The Cholla Cactus Garden is a wonderful spot to walk through the famous Joshua trees. The hike is easy and takes no more than 30 minutes. You will be amazed by the changing colors of the desert as the sun sets.

Joshua Tree also has some really great, eclectic stores, you don’t want to miss the World Famous Crochet Museum, a former California photo stand turned crochet store.

14. Newport, Rhode Island

Located on Aquidneck Island, Newport is a quaint town surrounded by breathtaking beaches and sea cliffs. Take a stroll along the 3.5 mile Cliff Walk to take in the beautiful natural surroundings. There are a few parking areas along the way, so you do not have to do the whole thing if you’re short on time. Park near The Breakers, one of the most famous mansions of Newport are known for their history and architecture.

If you’re visiting in the summertime, taking a sailboat out on the water is a true Newport experience. In the spring and fall, you can still see sailboats on the water, but in the winter the boats are taken out of the water due to the freezing temperatures.

Any day trip wouldn’t be complete without delicious food! If you arrive in Newport for breakfast, head to Cru Cafe near the Audobain Museum – the blueberry stuffed french toast is delicious! For lunch, visit the Fifth Element for classic American fare with a New England twist.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a trip New England without a seafood meal. The Black Pearl is located on Bannister’s Wharf and has views of the harbor – but be sure to make reservations ahead of time as it gets busy. Tennis fans would also enjoy a tour of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

A wonderful mixture of nature, history, and food makes Newport one of the best destinations on the east coast !

15. Helen, Georgia

This charming town located just over an hour away from Atlanta resembles a Bavarian alpine village. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Helen is a small town with a big personality!

Among the best  things to do in Helen, GA  are to take a stroll around the downtown streets for some unique pictures of the German architecture lining the main street, go shopping for handmade crafts and local goods, and grab some delicious Bavarian food and a pint. If you are traveling with kids, Helen offers a mountain coaster, mini-golf, gem mining, and short waterfall hikes within minutes of town.

There is no “bad” time to visit Helen. If you are visiting during the summer, tubing down the Chattahoochee River is quite popular, as are the outdoor hiking trails and waterfalls just a few minutes north at Unicoi State Park. The fall brings many tourists to celebrate their annual Octoberfest, which is one of the largest in the country. The holiday season is also a great time to visit, as the town decorates with wreaths, lights, and a huge Christmas tree in the main square.

There are many unique places to stay in town or just outside of town. If you prefer something a little less traditional, there are a variety of cabin rentals available ranging from luxurious to rustic. For a quirky and one-of-a-kind stay, consider the Heidi Motel. It is one of the photographed spots in town and guests can choose to stay in a suite inside the working windmill and enjoy mountain views in a quaint space

16. La Jolla, California

La Jolla is the quintessential charming beach town in Southern California. Just north of San Diego, this place has it all: stunning coastline, sandy beaches, golf, boutiques and amazing restaurants and hotels. It is an upscale town, but you get what you pay for;  La Jolla hotels  know how to pamper you and make your stay extra special.

If you are into hiking, I recommend hiking at Torrey Pines State Park. There, you will find coastal trails overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and if you are lucky, you might even see some whales. If you prefer something less rugged, you can walk along the beach walk towards “Children’s pool”, which is home to a large sea lion population. It is so much fun to watch these creatures. They are pretty used to tourists and not very shy, so you can take some great photos.

Kayaking is a great way to see La Jolla’s beautiful coastline and maybe even see some wildlife. You can explore the caves and even kayak into them. Depending on your skill level, you can rent kayaks and go out on your own, or go on a guided kayaking tour.

17. Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Carmel-by-the-Sea is located on the Pacific Coast of California. It is considered to be one of the most charming towns in the US due to the whimsical architecture and famous storybook cottages and even just wandering around feels like stepping into a fairy tale.

Have you ever seen Thomas Kinkade’s paintings? Those bucolic cottages of his are from Carmel! He actually lived and worked in Carmel-by-the-Sea and now you can visit his gallery right in the center of town. Kinkade was not the only painter who lived in Carmel. The town’s charm attracts many artistic souls so it became an artist colony of sorts. There are many galleries in Carmel and quite a few cute shops.

How did Carmel get its storybook look? It happened almost 100 years ago when one guy, Hugh Comstock, built 2 small cottages for his wife’s handmade dolls. And then he built more in the same style and after that people loved his fairy tale cottages so much that they started to then build houses in the same style, and the rest is history!

In addition to unique architecture, Carmel-by-the-Sea is also famous for its beautiful secret alleys that complete its charming look. The town is easily walkable and on this  map of Carmel-by-the-Sea,  you can find the cutest cottages and nicest alleys. Once you are done with your walking tour, you can enjoy Carmel’s famous white sand beach.

18. Ellijay, Georgia

One of the most charming towns in the US to visit is the town of Ellijay, Georgia. This peaceful town is also commonly known as the “Apple Capital of the state of Georgia”, and even has an annual Apple Festival in October where people can have fun and eat some delicious apples.

Aside from the apples, the town is also known for the many beautiful rivers and trails that surround this place. In fact, one of the most popular things to do here is to visit Amicalola Falls State Park where you can enjoy beautiful waterfalls, amazing hikes, as well as enjoy a peaceful day being surrounded by nature and wildlife. Visitors who come here will also find that there are many rivers surrounding this town which means tubing is also another popular thing to do, as you’ll sit in a tube and float peacefully down the river.

And if you’re looking for a place to stay, then one place that comes to mind is the Overlook Inn, which provides polished woody rooms in a rustic area that is surrounded by mountainous views all around. But if you are wanting to take things even further, you should try glamping in the mountains as it is an experience unlike any other.

The town of Ellijay is exceptionally charming and a place everyone should really visit. Although if you want to come, try to come during the summer or fall seasons as that is when the atmosphere and experience is at its best.

19. Mystic, Connecticut

Mystic is a charming seaport village in Connecticut. Filled with seafood, cute shopping areas and fun things to do, Mystic is a great place to visit. If you visit Mystic in the winter you will most likely be met with some snow, but it’s worth it to see all the gorgeous Christmas decorations they have up around town. The Howard Johnson Inn is a quaint hotel located within walking distance of the Mystic Aquarium and Old Mystic Village.

Old Mystic Village is so fun to walk around. You will find restaurants, a coffee shop, and tons of shops to enjoy. Two of the best shops are Sticky Situations, a honey shop, and Alice in the Village where you can enjoy tea time. A Harry Potter Tea time is held occasionally and it is such a fun experience. Old Mystic Diner is located right next to The Howard Johnson Inn. They have a delicious breakfast menu and bottomless coffee!

Exploring downtown Mystic is a great way to spend the day as well. You can walk over the Mystic drawbridge and enjoy the river views. There are a lot of great shops on the strip as well. Be sure to visit the Tea and Spice Exchange while there, it is such a cool shop.

20. Galena, Illinois

Just 3 hours west of Chicago, lies Galena, Illinois, one of the most charming hidden treasures in Midwest, USA. Galena is best known for its history, rolling vineyards, and 19th-century architecture.

About 85% of Galena’s buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places! Galena’s main street, S Main Street, is lined with more than 100 local mom n’ pop shops, wine-tastings, art, museums, and delicious eateries. Believe it or not, Galena’s Main Street has been recognized as one of the greatest main streets by Travel + Leisure Magazine. It’s no surprise many people come from around the country to check out this Midwest slice of heaven.

Although there is something to do and see all-year-round, I especially love Galena during the summer and fall. Galena is made for outdoor enthusiasts with plenty of outdoor activities like kayaking, biking, and horseback riding. Check out Apple River Canyon State Park for camping, fishing, or a picnic.

During autumn, you can find events like ghost tours, haunted pub crawls, dinner theater., and see the gorgeous fall hues. Also, make sure to check out Galena Cellars Winery and Vineyard for wine-wasting and vineyard tours. Galena has something for everyone.

Best place to stay? I recommend a bed and breakfast like Cloran Mansion Bed-and-Breakfast or a cute boutique hotel like The Irish Cottage Boutique hotel. If you prefer an all-inclusive, check out Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa for a range of activities including golf, horseback riding, hot-air balloon rides, and more.

The 50 Most Beautiful Places in the U.S.

From magical deserts to gorgeous beaches, these are the most beautiful places in each state.

Anne Olivia Bauso is a travel writer and hotel expert based in New York City. She has written hundreds of hotel reviews, from 5-star Ritz-Carlton properties to treehouse eco-resorts in the jungle.

magical places to visit in usa

Mother Nature wasn't modest with America, where her handiwork ranges from magical desert mesas to wooded river valleys to whisper-thin barrier islands. You might even say she was particularly heavy-handed when doling out American scenery.

The natural beauty found across the 50 states is so vast and staggering, it's practically impossible to make sense of — though you can't say we didn't try. Here, our totally subjective, state-by-state list of the most beautiful places in the U.S.

Alabama: Magnolia Springs

Mail is delivered by boat — the last year-round river mail delivery in the country — in this small coastal village along the Magnolia River. Dating to the late 1700s, the town is named for its natural assets: gushing springs and a shady canopy of magnolia trees.

Alaska: Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve

Few states seize the popular imagination like Alaska. And at 13 million acres, Wrangell-St. Elias (the largest national park in the U.S. ) encompasses the overwhelming beauty of the far north. Hiking here leads you through a boreal forest, along glittering glaciers (the Root Glacier trail goes right on the icy mass; crampons recommended), and up to ridges for wild mountain views — this park contains some of the highest peaks in the country.

Arizona: Grand Canyon National Park

What can we say? The most beautiful place in Arizona is the Grand Canyon . Though outrageous natural beauty is found in every corner of the state, from enchanting Emerald Cove to sacred Canyon de Chelly, nothing quite compares to the majesty of Arizona's flagship feature.

Within this natural wonder of the world, Havasu Falls (or Supai Falls) contrasts the red rock with its seemingly impossibly turquoise water, while the circular arc of the Colorado River at Horseshoe Bend is not to be missed.

Arkansas: Ozark National Forest

Dominating northwestern Arkansas, Ozark National Forest is an all-season haven rich in things to do. Its ferny oak-hickory woods are dotted with caverns (the tour-friendly Blanchard Springs Caverns has an underground river), grottoes, swimming beaches, campsites, and horseback and ATV trails. Whitaker Point and Sam's Throne are favorites with hikers and rock climbers.

California: Yosemite National Park

Vince Fergus/Travel + Leisure

The nation's third-oldest park has major status with the National Park System, UNESCO, and traveler wish lists around the world. The alpine wonderland draws millions of annual visitors to see its high-country Sierra Nevada beauty, marked by granite domes, towering sequoias, and sheer-drop waterfalls.

Hike or drive up to Glacier Point to behold Yosemite Valley from 7,000 feet; the million-dollar panorama includes Yosemite Falls and famous Half Dome, staggeringly close and shooting 4,800 feet at a beyond-vertical pitch above the valley floor.

Colorado: Garden of the Gods

Anyone with even a passing interest in geology (or photography, or just knockout natural splendor in general) might find themselves at a loss for words at the sight of Garden of the Gods. Two tips: Aim to visit the lofty sandstone formations on a weekday morning to avoid the crowds, and take the Siamese Twins loop for a view of the snowy Pikes Peak (inspiration for "America the Beautiful") set in a frame of red rocks.

Connecticut: Connecticut Shore

If you close your eyes and try to imagine the ideal seaside town in New England , your vision is probably not too far off from Old Lyme, Mystic, Old Saybrook, and other coastal Connecticut villages. Strung along the Long Island Sound, the small towns combine quiet coastal beauty and gobs of old-timey charm (think white-painted inns and cozy taverns).

Delaware: Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge

You don't have to be an avid birder to treasure this nature preserve. It's one of the largest surviving tidal salt marshes in this part of the U.S., the boggy domain of bald eagles, snowy egrets, great blue herons, and other birds and animals.

Florida: Everglades National Park

Stephanie Pollak/Travel + Leisure

A UNESCO World Heritage site and International Biosphere Reserve, this watery 1.5 million-acre wilderness is home to extraordinary flora and fauna, including American crocodiles, manatees, otters, and wading birds. To see it, join an airboat tour, paddle the mangroves in a canoe or kayak, bike the popular Shark Valley Tram Road, or set out on the flat Anhinga Trail through a seagrass marsh.

Georgia: Cumberland Island

It's hard to imagine a place better suited to peace seekers, bird-watchers, and even history fans than car-free Cumberland Island. Development on the Georgia barrier island is limited to the stately Greyfield Inn , and the rest of the nearly 10,000 acres is congressionally protected nature. When you're not strolling the driftwood-strewn beaches, you can kayak the quiet waterways and stop by the Gilded Age-era Dungeness ruins.

Hawaii: Nāpali Coast

The Earth's wrinkles are on spectacular display along Kauai's Nāpali Coast, where sheer, fluted sea cliffs (pali) plummet into the Pacific. The only land access is the strenuous 11-mile Kalalau Trail, which follows the jagged, jade-colored coast's gulches and valleys. The first two miles are a popular day hike; beyond that, a permit is required. This is considered one of the world's most dangerous treks, though helicopter tours are another way to see the exquisite terrain.

Idaho: Sawtooth National Forest

Four mountain ranges and four major rivers collide in Sawtooth National Forest , a 2.1 million-acre great-outdoors paradise whose landscape has remained virtually unchanged since Lewis and Clark explored it in 1805. The forest is home to dozens of 10,000-plus-foot peaks, hundreds of sparkling alpine lakes, and more than 3,000 miles of gushing streams, as well as grassy meadows, sagebrush flats, and pine and aspen woods. Manners of exploration are as vast as the land itself and include backpacking, rafting, skiing, and mountain climbing.

Illinois: Cache River State Natural Area

You might think you're deep in a Louisiana bayou in this bald cypress and tupelo swamp, the northernmost of its kind in the U.S. Explore the nearly 12,000 acres of wetlands by kayak, canoe, or foot via the park's trails and boardwalks. Some of the cypresses you'll see are more than 1,000 years old, with massive flared bases that exceed 40 feet around.

Indiana: Hemlock Cliffs

For the uninitiated, Indiana is full of surprises. It has the covered bridges and country lanes of Vermont, the sand dunes and lakeshore of Michigan, and fall foliage that could be taken for the Smokies. This box canyon within Hoosier National Forest is a terrific ravine- and waterfall-filled place that you probably wouldn't associate with the heartland.

Iowa: Maquoketa Caves State Park

Avid explorers will be in their element at Maquoketa Caves State Park, where bluffs, miles of trails, and more than a dozen limestone caves await investigation. Some of the caves, such as the 800-foot Dancehall, can be walked through upright, while others require serious spelunking. Either way, bring a headlamp.

Kansas: Castle Rock Badlands

This quirky site is off the beaten path — literally. Located on private ranch land accessed by 4WD-demanding dirt roads, Castle Rock is a relic of an inland sea that once covered this part of the continent. The fragile, fossil-rich limestone pinnacles provide a near-shocking change of scenery from their Kansas prairie home.

Kentucky: Mammoth Cave

The longest known cave system on the planet is found below the wild hills of south-central Kentucky. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a vast (as in still-being-mapped vast) limestone network of cool caverns, cathedral-like rotundas, and claustrophobic crawl spaces. Lest you think a Mammoth Cave adventure is all below ground, the lushly forested park above it offers hiking and horseback riding, plus canoeing and kayaking on its two rivers.

Louisiana: Wild Azalea Trail

Bar-crawling in Louisiana may come to mind before forest hiking. At 31 miles, the Wild Azalea Trail is the longest in the state — expect peaceful scenery of pine trees, clear creeks, gentle hills, and maybe even wild horses. Time your trek to March or April to see the namesake pale pink flowers blanketing the countryside.

Maine: Acadia National Park

With its rocky shores, crashing surf, and coastal mountain hiking trails, Acadia National Park has a special place on Maine 's most beautiful places list. Get there via Coastal Highway U.S. 1 and you'll incorporate one of our other contenders. Speaking of cars, drive to the Cadillac Mountain summit before dawn for the first glimpse of sunrise in the U.S. (most of the year, that is).

Maryland: Weverton Cliffs

Part of the famed Appalachian Trail, Weverton Cliffs is a switchback two-mile hike in South Mountain State Park. The reward for your effort? Views from 500 feet above the Potomac that include neighboring Virginia and West Virginia.

Massachusetts: Cape Cod National Seashore

This delicate chain of federally protected land is rich in natural appeal, including marshes, woodlands, wild cranberry bogs, windswept dunes, walking paths, and miles of sandy beaches. This is one of the last remaining blocks of Atlantic coastal pine barrens, a now-rare forest ecosystem teeming with animals and birdlife.

Michigan: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Out-of-staters might not equate Michigan with sandy beaches and striking sand dunes, but both are found along the state's largely coastal boundaries — most notably, on the 35 miles of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore . This carved-by-glaciers shoreline is home to a beech-maple forest, scenic hiking and driving, and the immense namesake dunes rising high above Lake Michigan.

Minnesota: North Shore Scenic Drive

The North Shore is a road-tripper's daydream . Many Minnesotans and Midwesterners drive this Lake Superior-adjacent route time and time again, hitting the four-tiered Gooseberry Falls, the precariously perched Split Rock Lighthouse, and the tallest waterfall in the state, High Falls (shared by the U.S. and Canada). And don't miss World's Best Donuts, a very important stop for cinnamon-sugar donuts and deep-fried "skizzles."

Mississippi: Natchez Trace Parkway

Beauty and blacktop meet on the Natchez Trace, a 444-mile drive that crosses Mississippi like a pageant sash, following a Native American foot trail that goes back millennia. Instead of billboards and interstate exit signs, you'll cruise past cypress swamps and meadows edged by black-eyed Susans and log fences, with lots of pull-over opportunities for picnics and nature walks.

Missouri: Ozark National Scenic Riverways

The spring-fed Current and Jacks Fork rivers anchor this national park. Swim, canoe, and fish in its crystal-clear waters and explore the area's caves (more than 300 have been discovered so far, some only accessible by boat), trails, natural springs, and historic mills.

Montana: Going-to-the-Sun Road

Take the ride of your life on the white-knuckle Going-to-the-Sun Road, a 52-mile route that climbs above the clouds in Glacier National Park . Looking out the window takes a bit of bravery, but your prize is jaw-dropping views of alpine valleys, flowing rivers, and fields of wildflowers far below the surrounding peaks and ridgelines. The road crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass (elevation: 6,646 feet), where you can get out and hike Hidden Lake and Highline trails.

Nebraska: Toadstool Geologic Park and Oglala National Grassland

Nebraska's native prairie land is thrown into splendid relief at Toadstool, a tract of unusual wind- and water-carved rock formations and vast fossil beds. Some rock layers contain tracks of animals long vanished from this part of the world, like rhinos and camels.

Nevada: Red Rock Canyon

Just 30 minutes from the LED skyline of Las Vegas is Red Rock Canyon , named for its giant cliffs and craggy jumbles of yellow and red sandstone. The hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and scenic driving on offer here are a pretty amazing contrast to the gaming, buffet visits, and pool parties that define a typical Sin City getaway.

New Hampshire: Kancamagus Highway

Kancamagus Scenic Byway ("the Kanc") may just be New England's prettiest drive . Connecting the small towns of Lincoln and Conway, it meanders by the rocky gorges, waterfalls, swimming holes, campgrounds, and trailheads of White Mountain National Forest. Fall is a lovely time to make the journey, when foliage colors and moose sightings are at their peak. Just be sure to pack snacks and fuel up — there are no gas stations or businesses for some 30 miles.

New Jersey: Cape May

Cape May's main claim to fame may be its late Victorian-era houses and hotels — some 600 structures in all — but this seaside resort town has non-architectural virtues as well. There are wineries, gardens, biodiverse wetlands, and, of course, end-of-a-peninsula beaches. Head to west-facing Sunset Beach at twilight for an amazing natural show over Delaware Bay.

New Mexico: Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness

Millions of years of erosion have created this sci-fi, fantasy-like display of pinnacles, spires, and other weirdly wonderful bodies of weathered rock. This high-desert wilderness (read: no marked trails) is essentially the geologic record of a prehistoric coastal swamp where dinosaurs once roamed.

New York: Finger Lakes

Glacial force shaped this beautiful upstate landscape , leaving behind 11 long, skinny, finger-like lakes in its wake. The region is heaven in the summer, when visitors can choose between waterfall hiking (Watkins Glen and She-Qua-Ga Falls are popular stops), endless lake activities, and more wineries, vineyards, and breweries than you can shake a stick at.

North Carolina: Outer Banks

This remote stretch of North Carolina coastline has drawn pirates, colonists, and early aviators. Now, it's the realm of beach lovers looking for peace, quiet, white sand, and salt air. Add in the barrier islands' wild dunes (including the East Coast's largest) and multiuse paths — it's actually possible to bike the entire 100-plus-mile length of the Outer Banks — and you've got an amazing region for quaint coastal exploration.

North Dakota: Maah Daah Hey Trail

Hike, bike, or hop on a horse and ride through the remote scenery for which North Dakota is known. This 144-mile system is made up of nine trails with various lengths, difficulty ratings, and backdrops, from grassy prairies to dizzying badlands buttes. It's a timeless American landscape, and the trail is aptly named for the Mandan phrase: "An area that will be around for a long time."

Ohio: Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

You can pretend you're in Victorian London in the Crystal Palace-evoking glass greenhouse that is the cornerstone of this botanical landmark. And its biomes and gardens might transport you to the desert, rain forest, and even the Himalayas.

Oklahoma: Tallgrass Prairie Preserve

Native grasslands, the ecosystem perhaps most powerfully entwined with our national identity, are on the decline. This protected preserve is the largest sweep of tallgrass prairie in the country, and the world. Here, you can see the American plains as they looked centuries ago, with herds of bison (about 2,500 of the shaggy-haired beasts roam freely) and swaths of purple prairie clover.

Oregon: Crater Lake

Crater Lake is evidence of the tectonic activity that's eternally shaping the planet. A long-ago eruption formed a giant caldera, which filled with rain and snow over time. The gradual result is a deep lake (the deepest in the country, in fact) with intense blue waters and fantastic clarity. Crater Lake's mountain setting atop the Cascade Range makes it even more hypnotic.

Pennsylvania: Appalachian National Scenic Trail at the Delaware Water Gap

The famous Delaware Water Gap area spans 70,000 acres (Pennsylvania and New Jersey), yet its namesake point is where the river carves through the rugged Kittatinny Mountain. See the Gap from Appalachian National Scenic Trail (AT, to in-the-know hikers), which offers a clear view from Mount Minsi.

Rhode Island: Block Island

Fieldstone walls hemming in emerald-green fields, Victorian buildings, and dramatic cliffs lashed by the Atlantic — you could be forgiven for thinking you've been dropped on a distant British shore. Mosey around the island by bike or moped, visit the two begging-to-be-photographed lighthouses, and pop into a classic New England eatery — we like Block Island Oyster Bar and Grill for lobster bisque and daily-harvested local oysters.

South Carolina: Hilton Head Island Bike Trails

Wide, natural beaches may be a big draw, but Hilton Head locals and vacationers alike praise the island's bike trail system for easy, breezy cruising (and for bypassing road traffic, which can be intense). The 85-mile, well-maintained network is easy to navigate and takes you to some of Hilton Head Island's favorite spots, like Sea Pines Forest Preserve. A bike ride is especially lovely in the late afternoon, as the sun begins to set over the marshes.

South Dakota: Badlands National Park

Steep buttes, crystal-lined caves, granite spires, prairies, and ponderosa pine forests — speculating the most beautiful South Dakota place is hopeless, but the fossil-packed landscape of Badlands National Park must come close. Here, meadows meet whimsically eroded canyons and vibrant, layered hills. Drive Badlands Loop Road (Highway 240) and the perimeter route around the South Unit. Bonus points if you time your visit to the south-facing Pinnacles Overlook for sunset.

Tennessee: Cherokee National Forest

Lovers of the outdoors have their work cut out for them in Tennessee, especially its eastern edge. The 650,000-acre Cherokee National Forest has something for adventurers of every sort, whether you're looking to tackle the Appalachian Trail or other backcountry treks, whitewater raft down Pigeon River, pitch a tent next to Watauga Lake, or witness the dazzling rhododendron summer bloom in the Roan Highlands.

Texas: Guadalupe Mountains

These mountains in windswept West Texas are the exposed tips of the 400-mile Capitan Reef, one of the best-preserved ancient reef systems in the world. Explore more than 80 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy nature walks through the Chihuahuan Desert to hardcore hikes to the "Top of Texas" (a.k.a. Guadalupe Peak, the state's highest point).

Utah: Arches National Park

We'll confess to paralysis by indecision here, such is the vast choice on offer (see: Grand Staircase-Escalante, Monument Valley, Bryce and Big Cottonwood canyons). Yet surreal Arches National Park gets the nod. Its natural sandstone arches, tall cliffs, and honeycomb rocks are like a 65-million-year chronicle of our planet. The scenery will leave you breathless — as will a stamina-requiring Fiery Furnace hike (ranger guidance or individual permit required).

Vermont: Mad River Valley

In the 1950s, the snowy ski resorts of Mad River Valley pulled the likes of the Kennedys and Hollywood VIPs. Its creviced mountains and charming small towns still make it a prime destination for all manner of outdoor and simple-pleasure pursuits, like hiking, maple- and cheese-tasting, shopping for crafts, and seeking local swimming holes, to name a few. Even just cruising Route 100 is a delight.

Virginia: Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway's "America's Favorite Drive" tagline isn't just a stroke of marketing genius. The 469-mile drive (shared by Virginia and North Carolina) takes you through some of the most stunning scenery in the southeastern U.S. One example? Natural Bridge, a 215-foot-tall "overpass" spanning 90 feet to connect solid limestone cliffs. Don't forget good hiking shoes and your phone charger because there are hundreds of trails and photo opps.

Washington: Hurricane Ridge

This mountainous area within Olympic National Park packs the best features of Washington state into one enchantingly alpine package: snowy peaks, glassy lakes, grazing black-tailed deer in steep meadows, and thick evergreen forests.

West Virginia: New River Gorge National Park and Preserve

A highlight of West Virginia is the seemingly endless reserve of spectacular river ravines and mountain views. New River Gorge gets a special mention for its iconic bridge. With a 3,030-foot steel span that's nearly 90 stories high, it will make your heart skip a beat.

Wisconsin: Apostle Islands

There's so much to explore on the 20-plus islands that make up this archipelago. Hike through the wilderness, hop in a kayak, scuba dive to shipwrecks and underwater sea caves (Lake Superior really does look and feel more like an ocean), and check all eight lighthouses off your list.

Wyoming: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Even in a state that's wall-to-wall with magnificent scenery, this site is a high point. The deep river gorge is a rumbling mass of natural beauty, with roaming wildlife (bison, elk, and even a grizzly crossing may make traffic come to a standstill), plunging waterfalls, and canyon walls made colorful by iron compounds.

101 Magical Places to Visit in the South for All-American Escapes

USA - Georgia - Savannah - Savannah, Georgia, USA at Forsyth Park Fountain.

Last Updated on: 19th September 2021, 01:14 pm

From the East Coast to the Mississippi River, I just adore traveling around the American South, whether it’s for a Southern US weekend getaway or a longer southeastern road trip. I took a quick count, and my best guess is that I’ve taken over forty independent trips to the South, so trust me when I say, you will not run out of great places to visit in the South.

Here are my favorite places to go in the Southern United States, plus the places that are on my American South bucket list (many of which I will be crossing off soon!).

Can’t read now? Pin for later!

My Favorite Travel Booking Sites for 2023

These are my favorite companies that I use on my own travels.

The Best Places to Visit in the South

No one human call see all of these places in one trip unless you’re fully nomadic, so don’t worry if it takes you more than one trip (or ten) to see even twenty percent of this list! And traveling the South is so much fun, and such an important learning experience, that you shouldn’t rush through it. Slow travel here is a great way to grapple with America’s past.

How to Use this List

I have chosen my favorite places and a few bucket list items in the South. I am listing them by state, to make it easy for you to plan your own Southern USA road trip. Where available, I link to other travel guides I have about the area to help you plan your trip even further in detail.

These places have been chosen for a myriad of reasons, from their importance in Civil War history, Civil Rights history, famous music venues and live music scenes, grand antebellum or European architecture (and the heaviness that comes with that), delicious variations of Southern cuisine, great outdoor activities, charming historic districts, famous nightlife, etc. There simply is no one-size-fits-all guide for deciding where to go in the South, so I’m including a bit of everything!

While I am listing southern cities and towns you should visit, many have been chosen because of their proximity to a state park or national park that you can see while in the area or the cities or towns might be known for stunning beaches or beautiful waterfalls. The South has great places for biking, hiking, kayaking, swimming, golfing, and more. Don’t spend all your time in the south indoors soaking up the Southern Hospitality!

Note that I am not including Texas, since I include it in my Southwest USA region. However, there are parts of Eastern Texas that identify culturally and historically with the South.

The Yellowhammer State is one of the most important states to visit to experience the Civil Rights Trail. From good eats to important historic spots, you’ll leave Alabama with an expanded mind in addition to an expanded waistline.

A famous  quote about Alabama  by Paula Poundstone goes “I was born in Alabama, but I only lived there for a month before I’d done everything there was to do.” That may have been true decades ago, but it certainly isn’t now!

From Birmingham to Gulf Shores, there’s just so much to do here that you can’t fit it into one small trip (or five).

It may not be New York, but Birmingham is the Magic City, and that counts for a lot. While here, make sure to visit the  Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument,  but don’t stop there! The historic sites here are spread out all over the city, and there is no shortage of important  things to do in Birmingham.

The city has great food, a charming state park just a half-hour away, and fabulous historic architecture. Don’t overlook this industrial capital!

The city of Selma is famous for the march Civil Rights protestors made across the Edmund Pettus Bridge but plan to spend at least a day here exploring the history of this city beyond its most famous landmark.

From Brown Chapel AME Church to the National Voting Rights Museum and its sister museum Ancient Africa, Enslavement, and Civil War Museum, there are many important sites to visit before or after you make your own walk across the bridge.

While you can visit as a day trip from Birmingham or Montgomery, there’s more than enough here to dedicate to its own weekend getaway.

While the highlight for many here will be the beautiful riverfront, Montgomery is the state capital, and as such it holds the key to many important historic events that took place in the state.

Of important note to those wanting to travel the Civil Rights Trail are Dexter Parsonage, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr lived, and the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, where he was the pastor, as well as the Rosa Parks Museum and the Legacy Museum and National Memorial to Peace and Justice.

For those interested in the Jazz Age, make sure to visit the F. Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald Museum.

Gulf Shores

I probably don’t need to convince you to plan a trip to one of the best beach towns in the South. Beyond its titular beautiful Gulf (of Mexico) Shores, this town is famous for its hospitality as well as the pristine waters of the Gulf State Park.

When you’re done swimming, make sure to hang out on the Original Oyster House Boardwalk and taste Matt’s Homemade Ice Cream.

Home to the oldest Mardi Gras celebration in the country, Mobile is definitely a destination you do not want to overlook when planning an Alabama itinerary.

For history lovers, you should make sure to visit the GulfQuest National Maritime Museum as well as the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. The Carnival Museum highlights the city’s role at the forefront of Mardi Gras in the United States, while the Fort of Colonial Mobile dates all the way back to 1702.

If you love Space Tourism, make sure to plan a visit to Huntsville. From Space Camp to the Space Museum, this is the top hangout for mini future astronauts to get in touch with their space-centric dreams. And as a little girl who has a blast at the  space center in Houston  when I was eight, I wholeheartedly recommend Huntsville as a great place to go on vacation in Alabama with kids.

I wasn’t prepared for the emotions (both good and bad) that I would feel visiting Tuskeegee. So much so that I went back again this year to see it in more depth. The highlights here are the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site and Tuskeegee University, but the downtown is charming enough to merit a separate stop.

Roll tide? Not in Auburn! While here, take in an Auburn Tigers game, enjoy the college-town atmosphere, and take part in some university hijinks. Beyond indulging in college life and sports, visitors here can enjoy Chewacla State Park, the Tuskeegee National Forest, and the Southeastern Raptor Center.

New Orleans doesn’t have the only must-see French Quarter in the South! Make sure to stop by this charming neighborhood while in Fairhope. You should also make time to catch a sunset on Mobile Bay, get out on the water, and walk down the town’s municipal pier.

Arkansas is known as the natural state, and with its long list of natural wonders, it’s not hard to understand why.

The Natural State is one that I overlooked growing up. I didn’t realize how lucky I was to visit Fort Smith and Little Rock, and I really didn’t understand the beauty of  Arkansas’s national parks ,   lakes ,  mountains,  hidden gems , and  small towns .  They even have some cool  castles in Arkansas!

I love traveling to Arkansas so much that I actually cover it in-depth on my website  Oklahoma Wonders  since Arkansas is a place we go all the time. You can see all my state and city guides  here.

Here are some of my favorite places to visit in Arkansas and the places still on my Arkansas bucket list.

Little Rock

As a self-proclaimed history fan, I’d be remiss if I didn’t put Little Rock at the very top of my recommendations of places you should visit, whether as a Romantic southern getaway or if you visit  Little Rock with kids.

The city was founded in 1831 and it still has a wide range of historic buildings, parks, and neighborhoods to explore. Of course, the most famous site is the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site, which is the site of one of the most pivotal chapters of the US Civil Rights Movement.

Hot Springs

For those of you who are looking for a little respite from the hectic pace of life, this is the perfect place to go.

Hot Springs sits at the base of the Ouachita Mountains and is a popular destination for travelers looking to relax in nature. It’s home to over 60 unique hotels, resorts, and inns.

The town has one of the largest collections of Victorian-style buildings in the US. It’s also home to Hot Springs National Park, one of the most  popular national parks in Arkansas.

Eureka Springs

Eureka Springs is a  beautiful small town in Arkansas with a population of about 2,000 people. The town is rich in culture and history.

Eureka Springs is known for its hot springs, obviously, but it also has a Victorian architecture that dates back to the late 1800s. You can feel like you are stepping back in time when walking its charming streets

The city also has some of the best antique shops in Arkansas as well as many other unique shops with handmade items and locally made goods. Whether you’re looking for something new or old, you will find it here.

One of the most popular attractions to see on vacation in Eureka Springs, beyond the springs and the shopping, is live music. You can find traditional Arkansas folk music as well as Blues and modern groups.

Fort Smith is a city that is located near the Arkansas River in the northwestern part of the state. There are many old buildings with a rich history in Fort Smith and people come to visit them.

Fort Smith offers great opportunities for outdoor recreation as well. People can visit various parks and trails, or take part in bike tours along the Riverline Trail, which traverses the entire length of Fort Smith, from west to east.

The city also is home to a variety of museums like the Fort Smith Museum of History and the museum at the Fort Smith National Historic Site, which showcase different aspects (both positive and negative) of life in the early days of America’s westward expansion.

Mountain View

Bentonville, fayetteville, florida (9), amelia island, st. augustine, sanibel island, panama city, tybee island, jekyll island, cumberland island, bowling green, new orleans, lake charles , baton rouge, natchitoches, poverty point, mississippi, hattiesburg, deer island, north carolina, outer banks, winston salem, south carolina, hilton head, myrtle beach, seabrook island, isle of palms, pigeon forge, chattanooga, sevierville, charlottesville, williamsburg, virginia beach, cape charles, harpers ferry.

What makes it so magical:

Wells Gray Provincial Park in beautiful British Columbia is a waterfall paradise . With over forty-one named waterfalls it is one of the most magical places in nature, where you’ll continually feel like you have stepped into a storybook. British Columbia’s fourth-largest park, with 5000km² of untouched Canadian wilderness, is located in the Thompson Nicola Region of Interior BC. A great bonus is that a lot of the iconic waterfalls are located along Clearwater Valley Road, and are a small stroll or easy hike from the car. This park is easily overlooked when considering a trip to the Rockies but is one of the best-underrated gems you will find in British Columbia. Wells Gray Provincial Park is a special place with a lot to discover for people of all ages and activity levels; make it there before it becomes the fought-after destination that it should be!

Best things to do:

Spahat Falls cascade down 80 meters through a keyhole in the rock. Helmcken Falls is the most iconic waterfall in the entire park, cascading 141m into the canyon below. Dawson Falls will remind you of a miniature version of Niagara Falls.  At Moul Falls, you can actually walk behind the falls, where you will witness the incredible beauty and power of nature.

Wells Gray Provincial Park is also an incredible hiking destination. During the summer months, the most popular trail is hiking Trophy Mountain . One of the most easily accessible sub-alpine meadows in B.C, even if you miss the wildflower blooms as we did, you’re still treated to jaw-dropping views.

You also will not want to miss Clearwater Lake , the perfect picturesque place to relax when you need a break from the adventure in Wells Gray Provincial Park.

Antelope Canyon is the most visited and most photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest. You’ll be mesmerized by the oranges and reds intertwining throughout the canyon, as they ride along the curves and waves. The geological formations, formed as a result of flash flooding and rain, are absolutely remarkable, making it one of the most magical places in nature.

Located in Page, Arizona, within Navajo Tribal Park, the canyon has two separate exploration points: the Upper Antelope Canyon and the Lower Antelope Canyon. The peak time to experience Lower Antelope Canyon is during the early hours of the day, or late afternoon, when the lighting will show off all the warm oranges and fiery reds. The Upper Antelope Canyon is popular for the light beams that reflect off of the canyon walls.

You are only able to see Antelope Canyon by guided tour. For a more enjoyable, and less busy experience, go between November and March.

While you’re in the area, take the fifteen-minute drive to also experience Horseshoe Bend.

Located in the southwest corner of Alberta, Waterton Lakes National Park is the smallest national park in the Rockies. Though it may be small, it is mighty in its natural beauty. Alberta’s prairies and rocky mountains meet, providing some of the most magical places in nature for picture-perfect scenery. It is arguably the best-kept secret of the Canadian Rockies. It is still relatively unknown as most people flock to Jasper and Banff.

Waterton is also the only place you can find: a UNESCO World Heritage site, an international peace park, a dark sky preserve, and a biosphere reserve.

Best things to do:

Waterton Lakes National Park is known for its clear lakes, stunning landscape and mountain views, incredible wildlife viewing, stargazing, and picturesque hiking.

The park has over 200 km of hiking trails, with some ranked in the top ten in Canada.  A shorter hike is Bear’s Hump. The steep climb is worth the gorgeous view that shows off Upper Waterton Lake with the cozy Waterton townsite below. The Bertha Falls hike is one of the most popular hikes in the park and is easily accessed from the Waterton townsite, just past the bridge at Cameron Falls.

The best places to stargaze are at the Bison Paddock Overlook, Cameron Bay, and Red Rock Parkway. To see the park from the water, take a boat tour, where you will also learn anything you’d like to know about Waterton Lakes National Park.

Summer is the peak season to visit, but wildlife viewing is the best during the Fall months.

If you’re looking to extend your adventure, Waterton Lakes National Park also borders Glacier National Park in Montana, United States.

The Icelandic Glaciers are some of the most magical places in nature. Witnessing these stunning ice formations almost feels like you’re looking at something that only exists on another planet. In fact, the country has been called the Land of Fire and Ice due to various active volcanoes, iconic black gravel, and majestic glaciers that take up 11 percent of the total land area of the country during the winter.

These glaciers are formed due to the heavy snow and extreme cold that is present on the island during the colder seasons, especially within the Arctic Circle. They vary in size and shape each year, but always look beautiful nonetheless with their crystal blue colors and intricately fine details. They are a natural wonder to behold and an activity that can be done in Iceland on a budget .

The best glacier to visit is Vatnajökull Glacier. It is the largest glacier in Iceland and in all of Europe. This glacier alone covers 8% of the total land area of Iceland and is quite a majestic sight to see.

Another great glacier for its enchanting vibes is the Snæfellsjökull glacier. This glacier has been made popular by the famous novel of Jules Verne, Journey to the Center of the Earth. It was in Snæfellsjökull where the main characters of the novel found a passage that leads to the middle of the Earth. Snæfellsjökull is even believed to be one of the seven main energy centers in the world and Icelanders have recounted stories of how it emulates mysterious, magical energy that is quite indescribable.

Regardless of which one you pick, any of the Icelandic Glaciers are all fairytale destinations to visit because of how otherworldly it feels.

During a road trip in Iceland , one of the must-visit places is the Diamond Beach with breath-taking scenery of a black sand beach with ice chunks that resemble diamonds. The black sand is made from lava, more precisely basalt. This kind of beach is formed when lava is rapidly cooled by the water and then shattered by the tides and the strong winds of Iceland. The glacier lagoon flows through a short waterway into the Atlantic Ocean, leaving chunks of icebergs on a black sand beach, making it really look like giant diamonds. It is a dynamic, ever-changing scene shaped daily/hourly by the forces of nature. The ice contrast well with the black color of the sand with the waves sometimes crashing on the bigger pieces. The ice chunks can be the size of a coin to the size of an adult, and even bigger sometimes. Their shapes are just amazing, they look like they were sculpted by the hands of men. One of the most magical places in nature, it is really like walking in wonderland.

Go for a walk on the shore of the beach, to observe and photograph the ice cut like diamonds, broken by wind and waves. Just enjoy your time at the beach, the view, the seals, and the many forms of the ice chunks. While in the area, visit the Jokulsarlon Glacier with blue water and dotted with icebergs from the surrounding glacier, it is a fantastic spectacle. If you are lucky, you can see the seals swimming freely among the icebergs in this area. Another stunning site to visit at a very close distance driving is Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon. It is smaller than the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, but also very beautiful and less crowded. You can hike around the lake or pay for a kayak tour or inflatable boat tour among the glacier and icebergs.

One of the most baffling things you will hear about Sardinia is that its beaches are as paradisiac as those of the Caribbean. If you do visit the Caribbean, though, you will end up concluding that some beaches there are almost as pretty as Sardinian beaches, which – with their transparent waters, fine sand, or rocky shores, are easily the most beautiful in the world.

The key word when thinking of Sardinian beaches is “variety” – there really is something for all kinds of tastes: small coves with tiny white pebbles that look like snow, as well as long sandy beaches perfect for a walk, isolated beaches you will have to hike to or take a boat to, and easily accessible ones perfect for a family with children.

One of the most beautiful beaches on the island is definitely La Pelosa , in Stintino. Facing Isola Piana and, a bit further, the gorgeous Asinara Island, and surmounted at this western end by a Spanish watchtower that dates back to the 16th century, this beach is famous for the tranquil, shallow, and clear waters and the fine sand. It’s highly protected, which means that should you want to visit during the peak season you will have to book a day and stick to that, follow a set of rules which include laying a stray mat instead of a classic beach towel to avoid carrying away any sand. It may sound like a bit of a hassle, but the minute you get there and catch a glimpse of this fairytale place, you will understand it’s well worth the effort!

Milford Sound is one of the most magical places in nature and destinations in New Zealand. Milford Sound has only had road access since the 50s and it’s 1.2km tunnel and winding roads makes for an adventurous entry to the region.

Milford Sound gets over 200 days of rain per year, but don’t be put off. Fiordlands downpours bring out the 100s of waterfalls that only flow during the rain. In fact, its misty moody atmosphere just adds to the mystery, so don’t ever postpone due to the weather. Just standing under the dramatic mountains as they cry waterfalls in the mist is a magical experience in itself.

Best Things to do:

One of the best things to do in Milford Sound is to get out on the water and head out to the Tasman Sea. Many companies run cruises lasting around 90 minutes that even drive under the waterfalls for your own “waterfall shower”. If you are lucky you may even see dolphins, penguins, and seals playing in the water or lazing on the shores.

If you are up for more adventurous pursuits, you could try kayaking in the sound or taking an overnight cruise. There are also a number of hikes on the way to Milford Sound that are perfect for discovering the area. The best half-day hikes are Key Summit, part of the famous Routeburn multi-day hike, or Lake Marian, a rough bush trek to a lone alpine lake.

If you have time, you must stay overnight at Milford Sound Lodge. It is the only accommodation in Milford Sound itself and staying in their relaxing units will also give you access to Milford at night, after all the tourists have left.

What Makes it so Magical?

Zion National Park has some of the most striking, beautiful scenery in the entire United States, and full of magical places in nature.  The park is made up of towering, crimson red rock canyons, dotted with various shades of greens. The views at Zion are breathtaking. Ascending the canyons will reward you with sweeping vistas of scenery straight out of the old wild west. The raw beauty of nature is in full display at Zion, no matter what time of year you visit.

Best Things to do

To see the park in full splendor, you’ll want to lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails – Zion has a wide range for all abilities. A good starting point is the Canyon Overlook trail, an easy, one-mile round-trip hike that lets you see the main Zion Canyon from above.

Want to ramp up the difficulty? Check out two bucket-list-worthy, epic hikes in the park: Angels Landing and The Narrows. Angels Landing is a strenuous, adrenaline-pumping 5-mile hike that ends with an exposed, cliffside hike to stunning views of Zion.

The Narrows is no less epic. This hike is up to 9 miles long and has you hiking through a 20 to 30 feet wide river, while you’re surrounded by canyon walls up a thousand feet tall.

If you’d like to avoid crowds, some of the most underrated trails in the park include the Pa’rus trail and the Timber Creek Overlook Trail. The former is an easy, meandering walk along flowering meadows, perfect to wind down the day. The latter is located in the Kolob Canyons area of the park and will give you stunning views of the crimson red canyons. Plan to spend at least two days in Zion National Park  to get the best experience, you won’t be disappointed.

Bryce National Park lies in southern Utah, amidst a vast expanse of red rock desert. A masterpiece of delicacy and elegance, it is a top road trip destination and one of the most iconic symbols of the American Southwest.   This makes Bryce on of the most magical places in nature to visit.

Bryce’s ethereal desert scape is nothing short of breathtaking. From above, its fairytale scenery boasts thousands of hoodoos that sprawl outward like a stone forest.

Below its rim, the park conceals a wonderland of natural bridges, meandering hiking trails, and towering stalagmite-like pinnacles.

Bryce is a small national park that is packed full of places to see. The bulk of its attractions lies along a 20-mile scenic drive that traces the edge of Utah’s Paunsaugunt Plateau.

The Bryce Amphitheater lies at the heart of the park. A large bowl-shaped canyon, it is home to some of the most notable landmarks in the area—including Thor’s Hammer and the Silent City.

The Amphitheater viewpoints include Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, Bryce Point, and Inspiration Point. A rim trail connects the viewpoints and showcases sweeping aerial vistas of the canyon and its jagged hoodoos.

Below the rim, hiking trails provide up-close views of the park’s surreal formations. Top hikes in Bryce include Fairyland Loop and the Queen’s Garden Trail.

While the Amphitheater attractions are must-sees, the viewpoints along the park’s scenic drive are likewise compelling. They offer intimate glimpses into Bryce’s more off-the-beaten-path corners.

Noteworthy places of interest along the scenic drive include Swamp Canyon, Natural Bridge, and Rainbow Point.

One of the most beautiful regions, and certainly one of the most magical places in nature, is the Val d’Orcia in Italy . For many, this area is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the country and is, therefore, a highlight of any Tuscany tour. Here you will find the pure, magical romantic: endless rolling fields, dreamlike viewpoints, picturesque cypress avenues, beautiful panoramic roads, and charming villages in Renaissance style – on a trip to the Val d’Orcia you will experience the real Tuscany, which is otherwise only known from travel magazines.

It is interesting, that since 2004, this landscape with its many medieval towns has been on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites due to its special nature and culture.

Worth visiting is especially the pretty town of Pienza, considered to be the cradle of the Renaissance. During a walk through the city, you will discover countless pretty squares and historical buildings. Fantastic is also the many good restaurants inviting to take a sightseeing break.

If you love to drink wine, the Val d’Orcia is just the place for you. Famous wine villages in a magical hilly landscape invite you to taste Italy’s best wines. Montalcino and Montepulciano, both well known for their excellent wines and their beautiful old towns, are worth a detour.

Our tip: The most magical moments in Val d’Orcia can be experienced either in the morning when the sun rises and the mist hangs in the fields. Or in the evening at sunset, when the sky turns pink.

The  Isle of Skye in Scotland is one of the most magical places in nature, and that you can visit in the world. For this reason, a visit to the island is high on many people’s bucket lists.

The island is remote, rural, and has so many magical, natural attractions. On the way to the island, if you drive via the bridge, you will be able to see the magnificent 13th-century Eilean Donan Castle on the way. There are so many beautiful waterfalls such as Rha Waterfall or Lealt Falls. However, the three most magical places on the island include the Old Man of Storr, The Fairy Glen, and the Fairy Pools.

Firstly, a hike up the Old Man to see the incredible, unique rock formations is a magical experience. To make it more special, go at sunrise or sunset, and you can wild camp here if you are after a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Secondly, The Fairy Glen has magic in its name, and you will not be disappointed. This area is full of green, rolling hills to explore, and the legend goes that it is full of fairies. Finally, a visit to the Fairy Pools is like stepping into a magical wonderland. The place is full of mini-waterfalls that are spectacular at any time of the year due to the backdrop of the stunning Black Cuillin Mountains. If you are lucky and visit on a summer’s day, you can go wild swimming in the waterfalls, which is a surreal experience. You are in an incredible natural wonder. There is nothing more magical and liberating.  Undoubtedly, the Isle of Skye is one of the most magical and breathtaking places in the world.

Puzzlewood is one of the best things to do in the  Forest of Dean with kids . Puzzlewood is located on a farm, just a mile from the town of Coleford in Gloucestershire, about 10 miles from Ross-on-Wye.

The woodland is truly one of the most magical places in nature which will delight visitors young and old. Narrow pathways wind their way past moss-covered rocks and gnarled trees, over little wooden bridges and past hidden grottoes.

Given how atmospheric Puzzlewood is, it is no wonder that a whole host of movies and TV shows have been filmed there, including Doctor Who and Merlin. As you walk along the twisting pathways, it’s not hard to imagine stumbling upon a unicorn or some other magical creature hiding in the woodland.

The rock formations found in Puzzlewood came about millions of years ago as the result of a network of limestone caves that eroded over time to create the landscape visible today. The pathways were first laid some 200 years ago by a landowner for the entertainment of his family and friends.

Puzzlewood is simply a joy to wander through- you’ll probably need an hour at least to properly explore the many winding paths. Afterward, there is a play area and small café next to the entrance to the woods, plus a picnicking spot. The pathways are not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs, unfortunately. Even though the path is approximately two kilometers long, even little children will easily manage the distance as they’ll be distracted by the many twists and turns and highlights along the way.

Mystical, almost ethereal sandstone pillars jutting into the misty skies, and finger-like structures reaching out from the bowels of a slightly supernatural valley. It can only be one of the most magical places in nature, and on the planet: the fairytale destination of the ‘Avatar’ mountains in Zhangjiajie , China.

You might have spotted the structures in James Cameron’s blockbuster 2009 film, Avatar – Cameron spied them from his helicopter while scouting unknown locations for the movie, and just had to visit the mountains, which served as the inspiration for the film’s otherworldly surroundings. Located in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, near the Chinese town of Zhangjiajie, the Hallelujah Mountains (known as the ‘Avatar mountains’ due to the film’s success) are one of the most incredible places you could ever visit.

While you could technically hike up to the mountains, most people prefer to zoom up in a Bailong Elevator, a full glass elevator etched into the side of a cliff that travels up at breakneck speed, bringing you to the viewing stations and the impressive mountains before you. And, while you will see hundreds of almost ‘floating’ sandstone pillars before you, these mountains are only part of the charm. That’s since the Scenic Area not only boasts this celebrated landmark but many more.

The first-ever Chinese natural attraction to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Wulingyuan Scenic Area is full of world-class features. Like Tianmen mountain, where you have to ascend 999 steps on the ‘Stairway to Heaven’, leading to a naturally-formed hole in the side of the cliff. Or the bus ride to even get there, which has 99 hairpin bends just to reach the bottom of the mountain. Or even the Grand Canyon, the world’s highest and longest glass bridge stretches over 1,400 feet between two cliffs.

Regardless of which part of Zhangjiajie you visit, you’ll find yourself gasping in delight, as you see one of the most magical places in the world leap from the cinema screen, straight into real life.

The ultimate spring experience awaits in The Netherlands where colorful fields of flowers stretch into the distance as far as the eye can see. This eye-catching décor consists of different bulb species such as bright daffodils, fragrant hyacinths, and of course the iconic tulips. The result is one of the most magical places in nature,  with an explosion of color that rejuvenates the senses and sparks the imagination. The flowery fun starts in mid-March and continues to the end of spring but the tulips are at their best in the second half of April. The vivid tulip fields can be found in several provinces, but South Holland is the tulip hotspot par excellence thanks to the presence of a world-renowned flower garden in the town of Lisse .

Most visitors flock to Keukenhof Gardens with its patchwork of flowerbeds. But there are many more fun ways to enjoy the tulip fields in The Netherlands, such as renting your bike at the Keukenhof Gardens parking lot and exploring the wider area on a self-guided tour. And if that’s not close enough for you, then head to one of the tulip-picking gardens where you can actually enter the flower fields. Other unique experiences include the Amsterdam Flower Festival and the many flower parades that liven up the local towns. Spring never looked so good.

The  lavender fields in Provence are one of the most magical places in nature to visit in France. Provence is a historical region in Southern France, nestled between the French Riviera and the Alps, and it is very easy to reach from major cities like Marseille, Avignon, or Nice.

From mid-June to mid-July/beginning of August, the lavender fields are covered by a layer of ‘blue gold’ that seems to have no end. It is not only a visual show; the lavender scent is very pleasant too.

In some places, the lavender fields are located next to wheat fields or sunflower fields, making for spectacular photo compositions. Sometimes there are little stone houses typical of the region too.

There are many lavender field locations, and depending on the altitude and the weather conditions in the area during the previous months, the lavender will bloom sooner or later. If you want to be sure when the lavender season is in a specific area, ask the locals.

The best way to explore the lavender fields is by car or with a guided tour. Visit the Romanesque Abbey of Sénanque and different museums and workshops to learn more about lavender in Provence, the lavender types, and its uses. You can also shop for lavender-based products like soaps, perfumes, or other beauty products. This area of Provence is dotted with charming hilltop villages, and some of these towns like Gordes or Roussillon are listed as the ‘most beautiful villages in France.’

There is no place on earth that is similar to the breathtaking beauty of Antarctica, one of the most magical places in nature. Protected for almost a hundred years, the impact of humans on the continent is minimal. Breathtaking landscapes surrounded by snow-covered mountains alongside pristine waters that break only for whales and penguins is a must-see view around the world.

Planning a trip to Antarctica  is a bit time-consuming. Expedition cruises carry less than 300 passengers, meaning booking in advance is crucial. These ships have implemented social distancing and deep cleaning in the wake of covid-19. Many companies also allow you to book two years in advance.

After crossing the tumultuous Drake Passage, Antarctica – and all the penguins you can imagine – welcome you with open arms. From the small Adelie penguins to the peaceful humpback whales, Antarctica is the ideal secluded destination to check off your bucket list! Due to the strict environmental protections, only 100 people are allowed on land at any given time. The staff makes a note of where you can explore, then you are free to go hiking, geology tours, or go kayaking!

Since tourists are only allowed to visit Antarctica during the summer months, October through February, the sun never fully goes away. The sunsets glisten off of massive icebergs and miles of sea ice – making it one of the best sunsets in the world.

magical places to visit in usa

One of the most magical places in the USA is the stunning and jaw-dropping national park:  Mount Rainier . This park features waterfalls, mountains galore, old grove trees, lakes, fire lookouts, and of course, the absolutely stunning mountain: Mount Rainier. It is one of the best places to explore in the State of Washington.

One of the best things to do in the park is to hike. The trails here are magnificent. One of the most popular trails in the park is the Skyline Trail. It features 360-degree views of mountains and a waterfall called Myrtle Falls. It really is a fun hike for the whole family.

Even if you are not an avid hiker, it is highly recommended to stop by the Paradise Visitor Center near the Skyline trailhead as the views are glorious. If the day is a little too foggy or moody to see Mount Rainier, head on over to the Comet Falls Trail. Comet Falls is one of the most gorgeous waterfalls in Washington. It features a few waterfalls and lush green trees. Grove of the Patriarchs Nature Trail is an easy hike for the whole family that features beautiful, enormous trees, a bridge, and a flowing bright green river. If you have extra time, make sure to check out silver falls nearby. If you are feeling a challenge, drive on over to Fremont Lookout on the North East side of Mount Rainier. The fire lookout is a fantastic spot for photos and looks great during sunset.

One of the most magical places in nature to visit in nature is Glacier National Park in northern Montana. Glacier National Park is a gorgeous area that has incredible mountain views, wildlife spotting, gorgeous alpine lakes to kayak or swim in, and historical lodges to cozy up in around a fire.

One of the most magical parts of Glacier National Park is driving the Going-to-the-Sun-Road. This road was carved on the side of the mountains in 1932 as a way for people to experience the incredible mountain views and nature this place has to offer. The Going to the Sun Road takes you over the continental divide at 6,600 feet. At the continental divide, there is a visitors center and trailheads for incredibly famous trails and arguably some of the  best hikes in Glacier National Park . The trails from the visitor center that are not to be missed are the Highline Trail and the trail to Hidden Lake. Besides hiking some of the magical trails in Glacier, another fun thing to do is rent kayaks and kayak around on one of the gorgeous alpine lakes inside the park. Make sure that you wake up early to rent a kayak because the waters can get a bit choppy later on in the day once the wind picks up. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, taking a trip to Bowman Lake, a gorgeous lake in the northern part of the park, is a great thing to do if you’re looking to escape the crowds and see some more beautiful scenery. Overall, Glacier National Park is a magical place, and will definitely not disappoint!

Havasupai is a paradise nestled in the desert of Arizona. Bright turquoise falls flowing against red and orange rocks. There are miles of waterfalls to explore, especially in the spring, summer, and fall months, when it’s warm, which makes it perfect to hike around and hang out in the water swimming under the falls. This makes it one of the most magical places in nature.

Once you’re there, the campground sits next to Havasu Creek. The first waterfall you encounter is Havasu Falls. Past camp, you climb down a ladder, which is an adventure in itself to the bigger waterfall known as Mooney Falls. Once you’re down there, you can keep hiking further down the canyon to Beaver Falls, which is 6 miles round trip from the campground. If you’re also up for the extra miles, making it a total of 16 miles round trip, you can keep hiking to the Confluence which is where Havasu Creek meets the brown waters of the Colorado River.

Hiking to Havasupai is not for the faint of heart. Backpacking is required and it’s 10 miles one way. Make sure to train accordingly beforehand. Permits are also required for this place, they open up on February 1st.

The Black Forest is a large forest mountain range in southwest Germany near the borders of France and Switzerland. The region is well known for its picturesque villages, stunning nature, and the fairy tales of the Grimm Brothers.

One reason it’s one of the most magical places in nature is the incredible natural elements like the Geroldsau waterfall, a sight located just off of the Black Forest High Road where a beautiful forest stream plunges six meters onto mossy rocks before continuing through the woods. Another fantastic water feature is the massive Lake Titisee, a glacial lake that was carved into the mountains of the southern region of the Black Forest.

You can also climb the peaks in the area using a number of funiculars or your own two feet in a sturdy pair of hiking boots. One of the most popular is the Merkur Funicular Railway near  Baden Baden , a gorgeous Black Forest spa town. In the town of Baden Baden, you can also visit the ruins of Roman spas and the modern ones built above them. They’re filled with mineral hot springs that flow through the area.

Another picturesque stop in the Black Forest is Frieberg, a vibrant college town that’s crisscrossed with babbling brooks. It has a magnificently reconstructed medieval center with a Gothic Church. Freiburg also hosts its own funicular to nearby Schlossberg Hill, a popular Black Forest hiking destination.

The Black Forest is also dotted with eerily enchanting ruins of castles, like Hohenbaden Castle. There you’ll find the stone walls of the former fortress standing atop a forested hill. These mammoth ruins are fascinating to explore and imagine their grand past defending trade routes and the cities below them.

Sierra Nevada National Park in southern Spain is truly one of the most magical places in nature. With most of Spain’s 3000-meter peaks, it is a haven for hiking and outdoor activities. The national park is home to the highest peak in the Iberian peninsula, Mulhacen (3479 meters above sea level), but also the southernmost ski resort in Europe which has slopes down the third highest peak in the country and the second-highest in the park, Pico de Veleta (3398 masl).

You can easily reach Mulhacen on a day trip by taking the park shuttle bus from Capileira to Mirador de Trevelez. For true magic, take a multi-day trek crossing several peaks. There are endless hikes in Sierra Nevada Spain for any level. Experience sunrise and sunset from the calm of the mountains where you can share magical moments observing mountain goats doing their thing in the twilight. The contrasts from dramatic raw high altitude rocky mountains to soft green landscapes, and drizzling rivers promising a way to survive in the wild is comforting. But, Sierra Nevada National Park is so much more than just high peaks and hiking. There are so many activities you can do there like mountain biking, climbing, and trail running. Go for a swim in vivid rivers and waterfalls in the lower Sierra Nevada or walk across one of the longest hanging bridges in Spain in Los Cahorros. The Sierra Nevada is also surrounded by some of Spain’s most beautiful white villages like Capileira, Trevelez, and Bayarcal. It is also home to of the most stunning cities and towns, like Granada and Guadix.

In NJ, Wiccans and witches have big plans for 'supercharged' energy of April solar eclipse

5-minute read.

magical places to visit in usa

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will darken skies over North America, transforming day into night.

It's a scene that will strike many as magical or ominous. For some, it will also will be highly spiritual.

Across North Jersey and throughout the world, many Wiccans , pagans and Druids view 2024's eclipse as a source of powerful energy that can bring about personal transformation and healing. Although witches have traditionally viewed the solar eclipse as a bad omen, many say they will attempt to harness the energy of this latest version toward positive change in the world.

It's "a powerful and highly energetic time, and this one will be especially good for healing our pasts and awakening the fire within," said Alexa Branco of Hackensack, who runs The Bruja’s Tomb , an online "metaphysical store" that sells witchy wares such as cleaning candles, crystals and instruction in reading Tarot cards.

A solar eclipse occurs only during a new moon, which to Branco and her fellow witches represents a new beginning.

"Throw in the fact that the eclipse is taking place in fiery Aries, which marks the astrological new year and onset of spring, and it is a time supercharged for transformation," Branco said.

How Wiccans will greet 2024 eclipse

Scientists will tell you the sun disappears during an eclipse because it aligns at the perfect angle and distance with the moon, which will block its light and reveal the fiery corona around the star's edge.

To adherents of nontraditional spiritual movements like Wicca — which has grown in popularity as more Americans  leave organized religion — it's an opportunity to tap into energies that flow throughout the natural and spiritual world. Witchcraft is a practice, and Wicca is a religion.

New Jersey is not in the path of totality for April's solar eclipse , the most significant in the United States in more than six years and the last in the country for two decades. But astronomers say about 90% to 95% of our star will be hidden in the skies above the Garden State.

Branco plans to meditate under the eclipse with a yellow candle, chosen because its color represents the solar plexus, "which is where our inner fire lives. It is one of our main energy centers and connects us to the sun, so a yellow candle helps to evoke this energy."

More: Think the solar eclipse is thrilling? To our ancestors, it was terrifying

Through prayer and meditation, she will attempt to draw that power into her candle. "I'm charging the object with the energies of the day, in order to bring that energy into my home and disperse it out into the universe," Branco said.

A wakeup call for the planet

Oberon Zell, 81, a neopagan writer and religious leader in Asheville, North Carolina, said the eclipse is associated with positive transformation. He will observe the day with a group of Druids in northern Ohio, where they will be in the path of the total eclipse.

"We are planning a big gathering for directing our energy towards planet-healing, saving our Mother Earth and turning the tide of human aggression. We need to rid our planet of the destructive forces," he said. "The eclipse is a wakeup call to people to treat each other and the planet better."

Jason Mankey runs a coven — a congregation of witches — in the San Francisco Bay area and writes about witchcraft. He said many witches believe "you shouldn't do any magical work during an eclipse because, in the ancient world, eclipses were seen as bad things because people didn't know why they were occurring.

"Most of us today are pretty excited about them because they happen so rarely," he said. "It's a cool thing to be a part of."

Meditations and rituals

John Beckett, a Druid and author in Texas, said, "These events are powerful. They can, in my experience, speed up magic because the sun goes from bright to dark to bright in minutes, rather than in a whole day. It's an amazing natural occurrence and something we can look at and appreciate."

"I will say a few prayers and make a small offering to ask my gods and spirits for help in whatever the eclipse brings," Beckett added.

Lorraine Henrich, whose coven is based in Fairfield, said that traditionally, spells are not performed on the day of such phenomena because "you cannot access solar or lunar energies as effectively when they are overshadowed by an eclipse. In ancient times people felt that a solar eclipse brought doom or bad luck."

In Ringwood, Meghan McSweeney, a self-described "eclectic witch," said the April 8 event is about relationships: "our relationship with others, ourselves and also the divine. Eclipse season isn’t something that is meant to be controlled, but something to surrender to, meaning to go with the flow of the energy that is coming in for great change and growth."

She'll celebrate by meditating on relationships and personal growth. She will also perform a cord-cutting ritual to dismiss "those relationships we wish to fully let go" and an "abundance blessing" to ensure "the seeds we plant now are successful for the rest of the year."

An eclipse can "usher in endings for certain relationships and bring beginnings for others," she said. "It is a time of dynamic change."

What's a witch? Who are Wiccans? A primer

  • Wicca is among the largest pagan groups, and its followers often practice witchcraft, said Helen Berger, a women's studies professor at Brandeis University who writes about witchcraft. But the terms witch and Wiccan are not interchangeable, she said. Although Wicca is a form of witchcraft, not all witches are Wiccans.
  • The modern Wicca movement was established in England in the 1940s, came to the U.S. in the 1960s and began to grow in earnest in the 1970s.
  • It always emphasized magic and later began to develop an emphasis on nature and environmental responsibility. Women's empowerment became a key theme in the '70s, Berger said.
  • Wicca and witchcraft are part of a larger pagan movement that lacks a formal structure or church but instead reveres several deities and focuses on Earth and its cycles, including solstices, equinoxes and cross days that fall in between. Witches often celebrate moon cycles and the rotation of the seasons throughout the year through rituals.
  • The number of Americans who identify with Wicca or paganism rose from 134,000 in 2001 to nearly 2 million in 2021, according to Berger. The growth of TikTok witches and others on social media suggests that the numbers identifying as witches in America keep growing, she added.

Angry young white woman sitting at a desk. She is wearing a green shirt and jeans and is stretching out her hands and scrunching her eyes shut in frustration.

Write down your thoughts and shred them to relieve anger, researchers say

Writing negative reactions on paper and shredding it or scrunching and throwing in the bin eliminates angry feelings, study finds

Since time immemorial humans have tried to devise anger management techniques.

In ancient Rome, the Stoic philosopher Seneca believed “my anger is likely to do me more harm than your wrong” and offered avoidance tips in his AD45 work De Ira (On Anger).

More modern methods include a workout on the gym punchbag or exercise bike. But the humble paper shredder may be a more effective – and accessible – way to decompress, according to research.

A study in Japan has found that writing down your reaction to a negative incident on a piece of paper and then shredding it, or scrunching it into a ball and throwing it in the bin, gets rid of anger.

“We expected that our method would suppress anger to some extent,” said Nobuyuki Kawai, lead researcher of the study at Nagoya University. “However, we were amazed that anger was eliminated almost entirely.”

The study, published in Scientific Reports on Nature , builds on research on the association between the written word and anger reduction as well as studies showing how interactions with physical objects can control a person’s mood. For instance, those wanting revenge on an ex-partner may burn letters or destroy gifts.

Researchers believe the shredder results may be related to the phenomenon of “backward magical contagion”, which is the belief that actions taken on an object associated with a person can affect the individuals themselves. In this case, getting rid of the negative physical entity, the piece of paper, causes the original emotion to also disappear.

This is a reversal of “magical contagion” or “celebrity contagion” – the belief that the “essence” of an individual can be transferred through their physical possessions.

Fifty student participants were asked to write brief opinions about an important social problem, such as whether smoking in public should be outlawed. Evaluators then deliberately scored the papers low on intelligence, interest, friendliness, logic, and rationality. For good measure, evaluators added insulting comments such as: “I cannot believe an educated person would think like this. I hope this person learns something while at the university.”

The wound-up participants then wrote down their angry thoughts on the negative feedback on a piece of paper. One group was told to either roll up the paper and throw it in a bin or keep it in a file on their desk. A second group was told to shred the paper, or put it in a plastic box.

Anger levels of the individuals who discarded their paper in the bin or shredded it returned to their initial state, while those who retained a hard copy of the paper experienced only a small decrease in their overall anger.

Researchers concluded that “the meaning (interpretation) of disposal plays a critical role” in reducing anger.

“This technique could be applied in the moment by writing down the source of anger as if taking a memo and then throwing it away,” said Kawai.

Along with its practical benefits, this discovery may shed light on the origins of the Japanese cultural tradition known as hakidashisara ( hakidashi sara refers to a dish or plate) at the Hiyoshi shrine in Kiyosu, just outside Nagoya. Hakidashisara is an annual festival where people smash small discs representing things that make them angry. The study’s findings may explain the feeling of relief that participants report after leaving the festival, the paper concluded.
