maha travel hockey tryouts

On December 1st, The Michigan Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) proudly announced its new partnership with FlipGive, a free fundraising platform used by thousands of sports teams, schools, and community causes across North America. The partnership will focus on supplying hockey families, teams, and associations with a simple online solution for making the game more affordable. As an added bonus for MAHA teams, FlipGive will provide a matching grant of $100 for any team that earns $100 by January 15, 2021.

FlipGive offers a modern approach to fundraising, using technology and partnerships with hundreds of businesses to make the entire process more convenient for families. Rather than requiring families and players to sell something, FlipGive provides team members and supporters with the ability to earn cash back while shopping popular brands both online and in-store. The results have made a significant impact with nearly 5,000 hockey teams using FlipGive this year.

Your association is invited to get started with FlipGive today !  Please see the document below for more details.

My hockey rankings, maha team formation & tryout policy 2020-21.

Members of the Michigan Hockey Community:

The Michigan Amateur Hockey Association continues to send its well-wishes to the families in our hockey community. We want to thank you for your patience and understanding, as we collectively continue to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic. We realize that this unprecedented period has resulted in significant delays in planning for a 2020-21 hockey season. While we’re still awaiting further direction, regarding a potential return to the rink, the MAHA wants to share some updates on some proactive policies we’ve established to progress in the season planning process.

On June 1, 2020, Governor Whitmer officially lifted the Michigan ‘Stay-At-Home’ order statewide. As part of this ruling, outdoor athletic practices and training sessions are permitted as long as coaches and participants adhere to social distancing guidelines (6 feet apart). While this is a very positive step forward, in our eventual return to hockey activity, Michigan rinks remain closed until further notice.

The gradual re-opening of activity of Michigan causes many challenges to how we initiate a new hockey season. Specifically, the potentially sporadic re-opening of rinks across Michigan hinders our ability to solidify a schedule for team tryouts. This can potentially delay the process of team formation. Ultimately, our goal was to create balanced solutions based upon direct participation in our MAHA Task Force, as well as input from our Leagues, Clubs and Facilities.

Effective the date of this release, the Executive Committee is authorizing its Tier I, Tier II Organizations and Association Member Clubs to commence the offering of Player Agreements according to the schedule indicated below.

TIER I YOUTH & GIRLS 12U – 19U  -  Immediately

  • May issue early commitments to players within its organization.

TIER II YOUTH & GIRLS 10U – 19U  – June 8, 2020

TIER I & II YOUTH & GIRLS 10U – 19U  – June 15, 2020

  • May issue early commitments to players  outside  its organization.

The purpose of the MAHA allowing advanced player agreements, prior to team tryouts, is to expedite membership planning for the 2020-21 season. This is also an effort to greatly reduce stress, for participants and families, as to where they will be playing next season. Under these circumstances,  ALL  advanced player agreements are subject to the following conditions:

  • Under this policy, hardships must be related to the COVID-19 pandemic, where a family’s financial status changed after signing the Player Agreement.
  • Durable goods that can’t be repurposed (i.e. team uniforms, etc.)
  • Ice fees, coaching fees, and expenses prorated to what has actually been used by the player, up to the date the club/association received a written request.
  • Participants/families exercising this option will  not  be permitted to roster with another club at the  same tier level  for the 2020-2021 season.
  • Participants/families may exercise this relief option  on, or prior to, September 1, 2020 .
  • Tryout Rule
  • Affiliate Agreement

All Tier I and Tier II teams executing early Player Agreements, prior to a tryout process, are required to register all committed players on the MAHA website. The MAHA will provide specific follow-up instructions on how to complete this process.

Please note that this Player Agreement process does  not  replace the tryout process for 2020-21. Once local and state governments allow for facilities to re-open and resume on-ice activities, team tryouts will be scheduled. The MAHA will provide further updates on this schedule, as they become available.

As promised, we will continue to provide updates on our preparation for a new hockey season. We encourage you to visit MAHA.org for continued information. Also, be sure to register for the upcoming 2020-21 season with your local hockey association.

On behalf of the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association, we thank you for your patience during this unusual time – and we look forward to seeing you at your local rink again very soon!

MAHA PLAYER SELECTION CAMPS

2024 taylor schedule may 17-19--updated, congratulations to the following 2007 players selected to participate in taylor may 17-19, congratulations to the following 2008 players selected to participate in taylor may 17-19, next step after district camps.

Once the District Camps are complete, the top players will be chosen to go to the final step in Michigan, where players from the 2007, 2008, and 2009 birth years will be chosen to attend National Development Camp in Buffalo this summer.

The 2007s and 2008s will attend Taylor May 17-19. There will be 4 teams at each age group. Players who went to National Camp last year already have spots in Taylor. The players chosen from the District Camps to attend Taylor will be posted on this site by April 29.

The 2009s who are chosen will attend LSSU June 16-23, with the 2010s going June 25-30. There are 6 teams at each age group. The players chosen to attend LSSU will be posted on this website by May 6.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT CAMP EMAILS

Most emails for Player Selection Camps come from a 'MAHA.org' domain. Please make certain this domain is safe in your email system to avoid missing emails concerning Player Selection Camps.

WAITLIST INFORMATION

During the course of registration for the Boys Development camps, positions at locations will fill and players will be directed to the wait list. This DOES NOT always mean that your child will not get to participate in camp. Our initial registration is set with a minimum number of teams with a balanced amount of players. We will fill those teams first. This allows our teams to have an equal amount of forwards, defense, and goalies. From there, all other players are directed to the waitlist. As we progress through the registration timeframe, we form additional teams as the numbers allow. Players are added to form these teams in the order that they are added to the waitlist (as each and every registration is time-stamped). Therefore, we encourage everyone who is directed to do so to register for the waitlist. In past years, approximately 90-95% of players who were placed on the waitlist made it into the main camp. Please continue to watch your email for updates on your registration--especially if you are waitlisted! Also note--players may only complete one registration, so if you are on a waitlist at one location, you will not be able to register for an open spot at an additional location. It is in your best interest to put your player on the waitlist in your desired location. Please reach our to the camp coordinators using the link at the bottom of the page with additional questions.

What are the MAHA Player Selection Camps?

maha travel hockey tryouts

It’s a common question this time of year.

In short, it’s the way Michigan selects the players who represent the Great Lakes State at USA Hockey national camps.

Each year, the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association holds its Player Selection Camps. For boys, the Player Selection Camps take place first at the district level, and then at the state-wide level, to evaluate and identify the top players in the state, as selected by a panel of coaches at each location. Girls participate in a single-weekend camp in a similar selection process.

Players who are chosen by MAHA to represent Michigan at the USA Hockey Player Development Camps then compete alongside top players from across the country in their birth-year class. USA Hockey uses their national camps to identify the top players in the country, as well as complete rosters for upcoming international tournaments.

“With our Player Selection Camps, we aim to put forth the best players from Michigan to represent our state at the national level,” said Joe Jones, Player Selection Camp chair for MAHA. “We make the process as open and as accessible as possible, so that players from across the state, regardless of what team they played for in the fall, have an equal and fair opportunity.

“It also presents a unique opportunity for Michigan’s youth hockey players to know where they stand with their peers. Hockey is a sport where players develop at different times, so the Player Selection Camps can serve as a measuring stick, and let players identify their strengths and weaknesses as they continue to train and grow.”

Frequently Asked Questions

The purpose of this section is to answer the questions parents and players have frequently asked. This section will be updated as needed in the coming months.

Are the 2024 Camps considered Development or Select Camps?

For the 2007, 2008, and 2009 age groups, the main purpose of the camps is to select the players to represent Michigan for USA Hockey's National Player Development Camps this summer.  Thus, they are essentially tryouts.

For the 2010 age group, there are no USAH National Player Development Camps. While the camp format is the same, the purpose is to introduce the 2010 age group to USAH's Player Development process and to begin identifying players for future years.

My son/daughter is injured and may not be cleared to play in time for the Selection Camp. Should I still register?

Yes. Any player who wants to participate must register by the deadline. Players who are not medically cleared to play at the time their respective Selection Camp takes place will receive a full refund as long as a doctor's note is submitted.

My son plays on his high school varsity team. Should he register for Team Michigan or for his birthyear in our District?

Players have a choice. They can do one or the other, or both. If they choose to do both, two separate registrations must be submitted - one for Team Michigan, and the other for his birthyear.

Does my son have to be on his high school team to register for Team Michigan?

Yes, Team Michigan tryouts are only for players who play on MHSAA teams in their junior and senior years . Players who are on MAHA registered teams are not eligible.

Vityaz Podolsk Wins the Moscow City Mayor’s Cup

After three consecutive wins, two of which were obtained in overtime, Vityaz Podolsk has won the Moscow City Mayor’s Cup. Vityaz played the last game of the Cup against Dinamo Moscow, managed to bring the game into overtime, where they won 3-2.

Although Vityaz is less successful than Dinamo in terms of its history, the team from Podolsk has had tremendous luck for suffering little from the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, it is the only team participating in the 2020 Moscow City Mayor’s cup, which has not canceled its preseason camp. The results of this piece of luck showed throughout the whole tournament.

Vadim Shipachev, Dmitriy Kagarlitsky, Dynamo Moscow

The top-level teams from Moscow traditionally play in a short tournament a few days before the season starts in Russia, which will be Sept. 2 this year.

Formally speaking, Vityaz has made history this week by becoming the first non-Moscow team to win the Moscow City Mayor’s Cup during its 13-year-old history. Truth be told, Podolsk – the town which Vityaz calls it’s home – lies several miles away from Moscow’s southern border.

Besides Vityaz and Dinamo, Spartak and CSKA Moscow also participated in the tournament . As all the teams from Moscow have suffered through the COVID-19 pandemic, it was Vityaz Podolsk, who powered through the whole tournament without a single loss. A 3-2 victory against Spartak Moscow followed another 3-2 win over CSKA. And the success against Dinamo concluded the tournament for Vityaz.

The Rink Knows Little Hockey History

During the game against Dinamo, two Vityaz players turned out to be exceptionally useful: goalkeeper Ilya Yezhov and forward Justin Danforth. Yezhov kept his goal shut for the first two periods, whereas Danforth participated in all the three goals assisting in one of them and scoring the other two.

According to the rules of the tournament, Vityaz managed to win the Cup thanks to the draw in the regular time of the game, which was achieved thanks to the goals by Linus Hulistrom and Danforth. Dinamo evened the game with goals from Vadim Shipachev and Dmitry Kagalitsky. The overtime goal by Danforth just made the tournament victory of Vityaz more acceptable for all.

Dinamo lost all of their games in the tournament, playing especially poor in the third period of all three matches. The team’s captain, Shipachev admitted after the game that he was not in his top form yet and hoped to gain it during the week left before the start of the season. He sounded optimistic and business-like and promised that “it all will be well with us,” while speaking about Dinamo’s prospects in the new season .

Old Rivals Help Each Other Gain Condition

CSKA and Spartak played the other game of the third day of the tournament, with CSKA overpowering their way to a 5-2 victory. This is a remarkable achievement for CSKA at this moment because the team had no preseason camp due to the pandemic. Thus, the players of CSKA did their best while playing against Spartak, who had more time to prepare for the tournament.

Due to its victories against Spartak and Dinamo, CSKA came second in the table. Spartak finished in third place with Dinamo fourth.

The tournament has shown that Moscow teams are still far from being in top form. The couple of days left before the start of the new season will not be enough to become top-conditioned. This means that the teams from outside Moscow will do their best to gather points at the beginning of the season before their rivals from the capital city get into top form.

Now the KHL teams are just eager to start their season and get into top condition while playing regular games. Just the way hockey players used to do back in the 60s and early 70s.
