Parenthood and Passports - Travel nursery theme

A travel-themed nursery is becoming a popular idea, particularly among parents with a passion for travel.

When my husband and I found out we were expecting a baby in summer 2015, we did what every new parent does… First, we completely freaked out. Holy cow, we’re going to be parents! Will we still be the same people? How will our lives change once there is a tiny human in the house? Will we still be able to travel?

Then, we started envisioning that adorable growing baby. Those tiny fingers and toes! That soft newborn baby hair! The sweet coos and gassy smiles!  We can do this parenting thing. Of course, we can still travel with a baby! In fact, it will be cool to show her the world.

Finally, we sprung into preparation mode. We converted the office into a nursery, registered for a bunch of stuff we needed and even more stuff we only thought we needed. (Seriously, you don’t need a diaper wipes warmer. You just don’t.) Then we hit up the baby stores, perused catalogs, and searched Pinterest for the perfect nursery theme.

Butterflies? Eh… Princesses? Not our thing… Chevron print? Cool, but a bit overdone.

Our Baby Girl’s Travel-Themed Nursery

Framed maps

We wanted something unique that reflected our lives and our interests. There was only one theme that we could both truly agree on… A travel-themed nursery . We wanted our nursery and our home to give that feeling of traveling even when we couldn’t actually travel . (You know, like during those sleepless newborn months.)

Nowadays you can find all kinds of  travel-themed home decor items , party supplies , and cl othing . Couples who love to travel are even planning engagement parties, weddings, and pregnancy announcements that are travel-themed .

Decorative suitcases in our travel-themed nursery

But when we were planning for the arrival of our future frequent flier, travel was not a popular theme. It was not readily available in any baby store, on Amazon , or even Etsy. I’m also not the type of crafty person who can turn a concept into a reality. But luckily, I have some pretty crafty friends, so our concept turned into a perfect, yet inexpensively put together travel-themed nursery.

Putting together a DIY travel-themed nursery

Travel-inspired nursery - Parenthood and Passports

First, we decided on a color scheme that had absolutely nothing to do with the theme. We chose mint, grey, and coral. Then, we purchased items to build the theme around and fabric and scrapbook paper with which we covered those items.

We found picture frames that matched our color scheme perfectly. Then, we framed maps and poster paper of vintage luggage tags and p o stag e stamps . We decoupaged wooden letters to spell out our daughter’s name, and had all of our friends and family sign a globe at the baby shower and write a message to our future tiny traveler.

Travel-themed nursery - Parenthood and Passports

Finally, after our sweet daughter made her arrival, we had her newborn photos taken sleeping in a vintage suitcase . We had the photo enlarged, and it now hangs on a lightweight canvas above what was once her crib and is now her toddler bed. The room has been able to grow with our daughter and has inspired a love for the world and other cultures in her, just as we’d hoped it would.

Tips to create a nursery with a travel theme

For those wanting to do their own travel-themed nursery , or any theme that isn’t readily available in home decor or baby stores, here are a few tips.

  • Think outside the box. We found the prints we framed in the scrapbook aisle, not the decor aisle. And nothing in our daughter’s room, aside from her furniture, was purchased in a baby store.
  • Build around a color scheme. You aren’t constricted by a ready-made theme. So find colors you love, and bring in those colors using accent pieces and picture frames.
  • Don’t think you have to spend a fortune. A custom theme can be done without the help of an interior designer, and it doesn’t have to cost a ton of money. While we splurged on our daughter’s crib bumpers and the newborn photos of her in a suitcase, the rest of the decor items cost less than a couple hundred dollars.
  • Decorate with items not typically found in a nursery. Suitcases, maps, road signs, globes, framed family travel quotes , and luggage tags can all be used to bring your theme together.

This is so different from all the other rooms I’ve seen but I quite like it. It’s different and I feel it captures your essence as a family that love to travel. Your DIY friends did a great job

Thank you! I mainly decided to share the pictures of Avery’s nursery in case other families are looking for a similar theme and need some ideas of how to make it work. Some of her knickknacks are collected from other countries and bought from native artisans so we can support the local economies a little everywhere we go.

I love this nursery! What a wonderful job you did and what a lot of wonderful things to stimulate a young and curious mind!

Thank you so much! I wanted her room’s decor to grow with her and not look too babyish when she is older.

my daughter is an adult now but I had so much fun painting and decorating her room over the years. I felt like it was really a place to let the imagination take wings. Beautifully done!

There's nothing we love more than to travel, except maybe to work on our designs. When we get to combine Travel + Design, then it is quite something. Today we are showing you how to create a Travel Nursery to inspire wanderlust in your little one.

A travel nursery is actually a great design theme to inspire curiosity in the little one while surrounding them with memorabilia and objects inspired by your travels. You get to nurture a global baby infused with elements and culture from all over the world.

DESIGNING A TRAVEL THEMED NURSERY TO INSPIRE WANDERLUST

When designing a travel nursery, you'll draw on influences from places you've been to and perhaps places that are on your bucket list. To start your design, first focus on picking the nursery essentials- crib, nursery chair and a dresser. Then you can accessorize with travel themed decor. Next, bring in your favorite travel memories and incorporate into your design. Personalize the space with your travel photos and memorabilia.

Here's a Travel Nursery design board WE've put together.

How to Create a Travel-Themed Nursery

Sharing is caring!

When I was pregnant with my son, Owen, I had a complicated pregnancy. This led to me spending half of my pregnancy on bed rest at home and in the hospital. This meant that I missed out on doing a lot of the fun “getting ready for baby” stuff. This included setting up his nursery. I was able to order some wall decals and order a couple of things online, but part of the fun is actually setting it up.

So, when we found out that we were pregnant with our second son, I immediately started brainstorming nursery ideas so I could start early, just in case. I’d always heard that nurseries for second babies are usually no frills because parents are so busy with the first born that they don’t have time to decorate another nursery. I really wanted this nursery for my baby and myself.

The theme was easy for us to come up with. We are so passionate about traveling with our family and exposing our kids to different cultures, customs and sights. I also plan on re-purposing some of the nursery decor for our guest room when our son is older and wants to redecorate his room. I was very careful with my selections.

Picture

I hope this post inspires you to incorporate your love of travel into your child’s nursery or even a guest room. There are so many interesting decoration ideas out there and thanks to online shopping, they are only a click away!

This is lovely with a good eye for so much detail. But what I like most here are of course all the travel books and the world map. Really great to see, cannot be too early to start to discover the world :) Well done!

Thanks, Hendrik! The travel books are so fun! My 3-year-old likes to read them to me while I change my baby's diapers. Super cute!

How To Create A Travel Themed Nursery

A travel themed nursery is perfect is you want to instill a sense of adventure for your little one right off the bat. I’ve curated some of the prettiest nurseries that you’ll see below with just a few changes to each to make it more masculine or feminine. This would be the perfect theme for a gender neutral nursery too or if you’re having boy/girl twins. Everything coordinates so beautifully together and I can’t wait for you to be inspired. I’d have to say my favorite pieces are the pom pom rug, floral pouf, folded map artwork, and hot air balloon light.

Travel Themed Nursery Ideas

Travel Themed Nursery For A Baby Boy

For the boy version of this travel themed nursery I changed up a few elements. I added some airplane blueprint artwork as well as wallpaper that would be perfect inside the closet or a tiny nook. I uses metal accents in the little airplane pedal care and chairs at the play table, as well as leather accents in the ottoman and some storage totes.

Both nurseries feature the same light oak furniture from Restoration Hardware Baby & Child line, but for the boy nursery I paired it with this gorgeous striped rug and light gray glider. I love the cute little wagon for storing toys and the tote bags for toys that are covered in matching airplanes.

There is even more artwork down below as well if you’d rather go with a boat theme or hot air balloons, but I particularly loved the combo of the light oak with navy, brown leather, and cream for this moodboard so I included the folded paper airplane artwork to complete the look.

Shop this entire nursery here…

  • Airplane Blueprint Artwork
  • Gray Linen Light Fixture
  • Navy & Leather Storage Totes
  • Gray Oak Play Table with Metal Chairs
  • Airplane Pedal Car
  • Folded Airplane Artwork
  • Dresser/Changing Table (not pictured)
  • Slipcovered Glider
  • Leather Pouf/Ottoman
  • Airplane Toy Totes
  • Rustic Wagon
  • Gray & Navy Striped Rug

With some of the exact same pieces as the nursery pictured above we can make the space feel a little more feminine with a few simple touches. The mauve and cream folded map hot air balloon artwork, the tapered drum of the light fixture with accents of light pink, gold, and mint green this space can take on a whole new vibe.

The pom pom rug, floral felt pouf, and paper mache world map art piece are some of the favorites in the adorable space.

  • Hot Air Balloon Art Pieces
  • Tapered Drum Light Fixture
  • Cream & Leather Storage Totes

Special Touches To Add To Your Travel Themed Nursery

Now let’s take a closer look at some of the special pieces that make this nursery theme so unique and darling. This was certainly one of my absolute favorite nurseries to design.

Nursery Furniture

The Marcelle line of nursery furniture from RHBaby&Child look like they’ve been passed down in the family for generations. These are certainly heirloom quality pieces that you can use for several babies for years to come.

The Modern Track slipcovered glider brings a cozy comfortable space to the nursery that’s casual and fun as well as functional. It comes in a plethora of colors, but I particularly loved this soft wash of gray for this nursery.

Travel Themed Nursery Ideas

Nursery Rugs

Rugs are a great way to anchor the space, protect your carpet/flooring from baby spills and spit ups, and add a design element that can be just as fun as it is functional. For a more masculine space I love this gray and cream striped rug and for a touch of whimsy I love this pom pom rug for baby’s girl’s space. Both are made with performance fabrics which means they can withstand heavy traffic and spills and are easy to clean.

Travel Themed Nursery Ideas

Travel Themed Nursery Artwork

I almost fell out of my chair when I saw these art pieces. I literally want them all. They are so unique and absolutely stunning. They are an investment so it may be hard to choose just one or two pieces. But, I had to share all of them because I couldn’t narrow it down either. The craftsmanship is nothing short of amazing.

Travel Themed Nursery Ideas

Nursery Poufs & Ottomans

Poufs and ottomans offer a soft place to rest for feet during feedings, some extra seating in your nursery space, and a comfortable place for baby to play and pull himself up on while learning to walk. Skip getting the matching ottoman that goes with the glider and opt for one of these gorgeous options.

Travel Themed Nursery Ideas

Nursery Storage

RHBaby&Child has some of the most unique and beautiful toy storage solutions I’ve ever seen. These in particular fit this nursery theme wonderfully well, but feel free to browse their other offerings. I’m sure there’s something there you’ll love!

Travel Themed Nursery Ideas

Travel Nursery Toys & Play Spaces

It’s always fun to add a touch of whimsy and playfulness to a space, especially in a nursery. The airplane mobile is perfect for this adorable space, and the vintage pedal cars and the perfect little splurge your baby will enjoy as he or she grows. And, don’t forget a cute little play table where you can enjoy tea parties, building blocks, coloring, etc. together.

Travel Themed Nursery Ideas

Travel Themed Nursery Lighting

I love the classic drum lights I spoke of above, but there’s just something incredible about this unique hot air balloon light . It would be the perfect addition for above your glider to add just enough light during those late night feedings.

hot air balloon light

Travel Nursery Wallpaper

I love adding an accent wall or wallpaper to a nursery space and when I saw this airplane blueprint wallpaper on Etsy I knew it was perfect for this nursery theme. I think this wallpaper would be the perfect touch in a closet for small nook to make that space stand out and bring the whole thing together. It adds just that little extra something special to your space.

I hope you enjoyed these travel themed nursery ideas. Let us know in the comments what your favorite piece was and if you plan to create a travel themed nursery for your little one.

We love to travel and have a special place in our hearts for the U.S. National Parks.

A National Parks nursery theme felt like a perfect fit for our family. It is a timeless, gender-neutral theme that we could enjoy for years to come.

We have now used it for two babies (a third on the way!) and still love it!

I am guessing you feel the same way if you are looking up national park themed nursery ideas!

While an aesthetically pleasing nursery is wonderful, the most important thing is for your nursery to be functional. You want to make everything to be as simplified as possible for when your baby arrives.

I will first share some inspiration and ideas for your National Park-themed nursery, as well as links to purchase items. Then I will share the best nursery organization tips that will help you save time and simplify your life once your baby arrives!

I went to the wood crafting section of Hobby Lobby and bought unfinished wood triangles and a little bag of unfinished wood knobs. I used gray and white acrylic paint to paint the mountain pattern. Once the paint dried, I used a hot glue gun to attach the knobs to the mountains. They have held up great and are super cute! I spent less than $8 on the whole project.

National Park Posters & Prints

Purchasing posters, digital downloads, or a beautiful art piece from your favorite parks would be a great way to decorate the walls of your nursery.

Nursery Furniture

There are a few furniture staples you will want in your nursery – a good crib or bed and a breathable mattress , a dresser (I recommend getting one that can grow with them & plan to use it as your changing table as well), and a good rocking chair .

We used to have a crib from Target, but I sold that one and bought this Babyletto Crib secondhand and love how it looks in the room. It has a lot of great features and can convert to a toddler bed as your child grows.

diaper changing station

Save space and money by skipping the changing table and placing a changing pad on top of the nursery dresser. And once your baby outgrows diapers, you won’t be left with a useless piece of furniture – win, win!

If you get a cute cover for the changing pad and a little caddy for your diapering supplies, your little changing station will be functional and cute.

This system also makes it easier to transport your changing pad and diaper caddy around the house. During the newborn stage, diaper changing and outfit changes seem to be constant, so it is nice to have the option to bring your diapering supplies to your bedroom or the living room if needed.

2. Get Closet Dividers for Hanging Clothes

baby clothes organization

These closet dividers hang right on your closet rod and divide baby’s clothes by size. This makes finding and grabbing clothes quick and easy.

It also gives you a good visual of how many clothes you have in each size and what you might need more of.

I like knowing that all of the clothes we have in a particular size are in one place – it’s the worst when you come across a cute outfit that your baby outgrew before getting a chance to wear it!

3. Use An Over-the-Door Shoe Holder for Storage

Use over-the-door shoe holders on the back of your nursery door to sore swaddle blankets, sleepsacks, baby booties, hats, bibs, burp cloths, hair bows, etc.

nursery organization hacks

4. Use Drawer Dividers or Mini Bins in Baby’s Dresser

nursery organization ideas

Baby clothes are so tiny (obviously), so drawer dividers or little baskets keep everything neat and organized.

I have little bins for pants and shorts, and I roll them up and label the outside of the bin with the size.

I use drawer dividers for all of the toiletry-type items, socks, mittens, pacifiers, and other little items we keep in the nursery dresser.

5. Have a Designated “Memory Box” in Your Nursery

After we had our first baby, we had so many piles of “souvenirs” that we wanted to keep, but nowhere to put them – mementos from the hospital, baptism keepsakes, cards from relatives, pictures, etc.

Before your baby arrives, find a designated box that you can use to easily store all of the special things that you will want to keep, but won’t have time to deal with during the sleep-deprived newborn days.

This pretty wooden box goes along with the National Parks Nursery theme , or you can just get a simple photo box with a lid .

Our Adventures Box, 8.5 in x 8 in x 2.5

6. Put a Cube Shelf in the Closet for Extra Storage

travel nursery ideas

I have a cube shelf in each of my boys’ closets. Cube shelves are awesome for storing extra crib sheets, overstock diapers, wipes, baby care items, winter gear, beach gear, blankets, burp clothes, etc.

The best part is you can haphazardly shove as much as you want into the bins and they will still look organized and tidy from the outside!

7. Bins, Bins, & More Bins

nursery storage

I like to line the top of the nursery closet rack with MORE bins. You can keep clothes, toys, extra diapers, wipes, creams, electronics boxes, and all kinds of miscellaneous stuff in your bins

The bins look nice and keep everything organized. You can add labels to your bins to be even more organized.

You could also get a long, shallow storage bin for under your crib if you don’t have a lot of closet space.

8. Use Hangers with Clips for Outfit Sets

Finnhomy Non-Slip Clothes Hangers for Baby and Kids 20-Pack Velvet

9. Use a Hanging Closet Organizer

MAX Houser 6 Tier Shelf Hanging Closet Organizer, Closet Hanging

I use these hanging closet shelves to organize my kids’ outfits for the week. Once a week, I get seven complete outfits (diaper, pants, shirt, socks, etc.) ready for each of my kids so that I can easily open the closet door each morning and grab that day’s outfit off of the shelf without thinking twice.

10. Have a Convenient Place to Put Outgrown Clothes

Have a designated bin in your closet to throw any clothes into that have gotten too small for your baby.

I have a little basket in our nursery closet that I throw too-small clothes into when I notice that they don’t fit anymore.

Once the basket gets full, I transfer the outgrown clothes to size-labeled storage bins in our basement.

I hope this National Parks Nursery post gives you inspiration and ideas for setting up your own travel-themed nursery for your baby boy or girl! Your greatest adventure is just beginning! 🙂

Travel Themed Boy Nursery

Share to Your Social Media

We will be having a baby boy any day now. I wanted to share his nursery with you. I decorated this travel themed boy nursery for him because I love to travel and I hope he has the wanderlust bug as well.

The main theme is travel/mountainous travel and the color scheme is a mixture of blues and neutrals.

This nursery may feel “one-sided” and that is because it shares a room with our master bedroom . To have both the master and the nursery in the same room was a practical decision for us.

The nearest bedroom to ours is a pretty long distance away and I like to have my newborn babies close to me at night. Stumbling through the house and going up and down many stairs to get the baby when he/she needs me multiple times a night is not my idea of convenient or practical.

Plus, my husband is a very deep sleeper so he rarely—if ever— hears the baby cry (lucky him right!).

He is really helpful after work but I willingly take the night shift so he can function at his full-time job.

Travel Themed Boy Nursery

Having the nursery in our room has worked extremely well for our family.

Travel Themed Boy Nursery

This is the least expensive nursery I’ve done… It cost a total of $250.00. I used almost everything we already had to decorate it. Below there are links to blog posts on how to decorate a first time nursery for under $1,000.

Why choose a Travel Themed Boy Nursery

As mentioned, I love to travel. When I was 19, I moved to New Zealand to snowboard and travel the North and South Islands. It was a very fun and exciting adventure.

At one point in my travels, I was able to go to Milford Sound. It was so gorgeous it truly was breath-taking!!

Travel Themed Boy Nursery frame decor

New Zealand on the whole is one of the most scenic places I’ve been to. I will never forget the beautiful views and especially Milford Sound.

I absolutely LOVE mountains and I love to snowboard which is why some of my favorite places to travel to are cooler mountainous areas: Switzerland, Alaska, New Zealand, Germany, Canada, Utah to name a few.

My first son is named after a mountain; Denali. We will name this son after a mountain/ski resort; Brighton.

So, I was trying to decide what travel or mountain scene or wall art to buy for this nursery. There were so many amazing options I spent hours searching Etsy and retailers online.

The wall is quite large so I was trying to find something that could fill the space without being too expensive.

One day, I found this massive canvas of Milford Sound (92″x42″) on sale. It was gorgeous! That day it was 75% off with free shipping and an additional $25.00 off of a first time purchase discount from Elephant Stock. I ended up getting it for $198.00 shipped.

I’m not being sponsored or paid to say this, but the shipping, packaging, printing, and price were all exceptional. So, if you are in need of wall art, check Elephant Stock out.

It makes me so happy seeing this beautiful photo every day. It is perfect for this room as it combines mountains, travel and is also very sentimental to me.

Well, enough on the wall art…on to the rest of the nursery…

I purchased this wall storage hanger from Target on sale for $4.00.

This storage hanger gives me a place to organize socks, beanies/hats, binkies, windi’s , nose frida and other misc items in it.

Travel Themed Boy Nursery

I bought the changing table/dresser from a classified ad for my daughter’s nursery. It is super functional.

I love the open shelves for wipes and diapers. I also love the height of this dresser. Both my husband and I are tall and it is nice not to have to bend over.

Tip: When purchasing any furniture to be used as a changing table, measure your changing pad first to be sure it will fit the top.

It’s amazing how many dressers and even some changing tables won’t fit the newer changing pads the industry is coming out with.

This baby changing pad on this dresser is the best-ever. I highly recommend it. We’ve been using it for 18 months and it is amazing.

It is warm and soft for the baby, requires no covers, doesn’t slip or slide around, has a mobile, and easily wipes clean. It’s totally worth it.

Travel Themed Boy Nursery

I put my son’s clothes, burp cloths, swaddles, shoes, etc. in the bottom two drawers.

I still have some of my daughter’s clothes in the top drawer in case she has an accident and needs a new outfit during the day.

She has made the move out of this room/her old nursery into her own room, but we still change her at this changing station. Having a few outfits here when needed is very convenient.

Travel Themed Boy Nursery

I got the crib for my daughter’s nursery and am just reusing it and the mattress for this baby boy.

I found this darling Burt’s Bees mountain blanket on Amazon and used my registry discount to get it for $15.00.

All of the pillows in this nursery were bought to decorate/stage a house that we renovated and sold a few years ago.

I also had all of the stuffed animals from previous babies.

Travel Themed Boy Nursery blue sheet

My sister in law gave me a crib sheet she used for her sons. It matches great since it is navy, grey, white, and black.

As for the crib skirt, I got creative to save money on one.

I just laid a thick blue blanket that we had lying around the house where the crib skirt would go and tucked it in the back as well.

The blanket works and looks great as a crib skirt and didn’t cost anything additional.

Travel Themed Boy Nursery

The mountain mobile was purchased from Buy Buy Baby on sale with a coupon for $20.00. I just checked it and it’s now about $55. I guess I lucked out on that Black Friday sale and having a coupon.

Travel Themed Boy Nursery

I had both side tables.

This wood/iron table was purchased at World Market 4 years ago for another part of my house. I got a crazy good deal on it then as it was a display model and on sale + coupon. I believe it was under $25.00.

Anyway, I brought it in the nursery to use to set milk bottles, burp cloths, and binkies on while feeding and rocking the baby in the rocker.

Travel Themed Boy Nursery never touch books

For now, I have some of my daughter’s favorite books on it because she likes me to rock and read to her in the recliner.

If you’ve never read these “ Never Touch A” series of books , I highly recommend them!

Travel Themed Boy Nursery pillows

The rocker/recliner was also purchased for my daughter. It is brown and that much brown was just too overwhelming in the room design so I covered it with a Navy blanket I had. I also added pillows I already had.

This other side table was also purchased off classifieds for super cheap for staging my husband’s last home. It was just in a spare bedroom downstairs so I brought it up. I love its vintage look.

Travel Themed Boy Nursery side table with vintage fan

The fan, car, binoculars, globe and candle were also found around the house. I collected these items to put on the side table to represent the travel theme. They all have a vintage feel which goes with the side tables.

Travel Themed Boy Nursery laundry basket

I got this blanket storage bin from Target for $12.00.

Travel Themed Boy Nursery full decoration

I also had the gold lamp (next to the recliner) and black leather rug from staging a house.

The shag rug came from my front room that we replaced 2 years ago and I was just storing it.

What This Travel Themed Boy Nursery Cost

Total spent: $250.00—Not bad at all.

If you are starting a new nursery, it is going to cost you more than $250.00. The average cost of a first time nursery is about $2,000.00-$5,000.00 (not including boutique/abnormally expensive items).

If you are frugal, it is possible to furnish and decorate a new first time nursery for under $1,000.00.

My first son’s nursery cost “from scratch” (I had no baby items), about $500. My 3rd baby’s (1st in a new marriage) nursery was also done “from scratch” for $800.00.

Subsequent kids’ nurseries will likely not cost as much as you can reuse items.

Hopefully, this travel themed boy nursery post has given you ideas on how to make a functional, cute, and inexpensive travel themed nursery for your little one.

Travel Themed Nursery Tour

Get ideas for a travel theme nursery for your little one!

Today on the blog I’m sharing a sneak peek into our little guy’s travel themed nursery! We went slow and steady throughout the pregnancy making changes to our spare room to turn it into the nursery. Thankfully, that helped me enjoy the process rather than get overwhelmed with all the decorating decision making.

After scrolling through endless ideas on Pinterest, we decided on a neutral travel themed nursery. Clearly, traveling the world is near and dear to our hearts and we can keep the design if a little girl is in our future.

A Guide to a Travel Themed Nursery

Initial Changes:

Our first step was painting the room. We ultimately selected a light/mint green to cover the walls and repainted the ceiling and closet bright white. It’s amazing how big of a transformation happens with just a coat or two of paint! The next large project involved an intricate world map wall decal that I found on Etsy. I loved the idea of some sort of map and waffled between cheaper options such as a large poster or wall hanging. I kept coming back to this wall decal though, so I decided to splurge and go for it.

We were able to customize the decal with bright colors and I asked if the seller would extend her 15% discount, which she did! We spent Christmas break putting up the countries and then I added each individual label and animal over the next month. It was honestly a huge amount of work (and a bit of stress) but I am thrilled with the result!

As for furniture, we picked natural wood colors for the crib and changing table . I also eventually decided to add a glider after reading lots of recommendations online. I’m particularly excited about our red metal rolling cart too, since it adds a ton of storage and easy access to diapers/wipes near the changing table. Plus, Jay and I are quite tall so I was happy to find one that meets our height needs! I’ll admit nothing here fits particularly in our travel theme, but it does all look quite nice together 🙂

Accessories:

To keep with the travel themed nursery, I also turned to Etsy to search for curtains. There aren’t exactly a lot of options, so I snagged these vintage airplane/map curtains as soon as I found them. I tried to find that pattern elsewhere in the hopes of making them myself, but none of my local craft stores had anything even remotely similar. Once again at least, I was able to customize the sizing and bring down the price a bit.

A few other accessories we’ve added are travel themed totes , a mini bookcase for obvious reasons, and a touch of Harry Potter charm. I spent the past two years on and off finishing a Harry Potter cross stitch and I couldn’t resist the Lumos/Nox light switch cover when I came across the idea on Etsy! I also fell in love with a mobile featuring world landmarks , but couldn’t justify the price. So, I made it myself! My mom would be so proud those crafty genes finally appeared…

travel nursery ideas

I’ve got to show off a picture of the handmade travel mobile that is now hanging above the changing table.

If you’re a regular blog visitor, you obviously know that reading is a vital part of my life. Naturally, that means I’m filling the nursery with plenty of kids books! I’m grateful for all the friends and family that are contributing to Baby Kamery’s collection. He’s already off to quite a good start. I’m hoping he’ll enjoy a few of my favorites such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Rainbow Fish, and Brown Bear Brown Bear. I can’t wait to start reading from the Children’s Bible Stories books that we’ve received as well!

Finishing Touches:

While we have the vast majority of our travel themed nursery finished, there are still a few final touches I want to add to the walls:

Hanging Shelves – I asked Jay to make hanging shelves similar to these to store books and stuffed animals.

travel nursery ideas

Signpost – Also on Jay’s list is a signpost featuring various places from children’s books and fantasy books!

Thanks for joining me on our travel themed nursery tour!

Love it! What a wonderful space for baby! Thanks for sharing it.

This is the cutest nursery!

It looks great! I see the Beginner Bible. My boys love theirs! I can’t wait to hear about the little guy’s arrival.

Some of these children’s bible books look adorable. Can’t wait to start reading them!

Oh my goooossshhh this is TOO CUTE! I am so in love with that huge decal! Your little guy is going to fit perfectly in there <3

So cute! Did you make the mobile yourself? I love it!

I did!! Didn’t want to pay an absurd price on Etsy haha. It was surprisingly easy, just a bit time-consuming.

61 Perfect Nursery Themes

For your bundles of joy.

Wooden nursery furniture in front of black and white wall.

There are so many fun things about having a baby , and decorating their nursery is high on the list. You’ll be spending a lot of time there, so make it a place you and your baby love. Here are 61 of our favorite nursery themes to inspire the room you create for your little one.

Baby Girl Nursery Themes

We think any theme can work for any baby. But if you’re searching for classically girly nursery themes, here are some we can’t get enough of.

1. Fresh Florals

Floral wallpaper with gold mirror and white crib.

Florals are fresh and sweet, just like your little one. Try a bold flower print wallpaper to tie the look together.

2. Petite Parisian

Are you raising a little Francophile to share your affinity for all things French? A Parisian-themed nursery is the perfect way to celebrate your love of the City of Lights.

3. Pretty in Pink

Baby mobile made with felt roses.

You can’t go wrong with varying shades of pink for your little girl’s room. Try a mobile with complementary pops of green to add interest.

4. Baby Ballerina

A ballerina theme is perfect for your tiny dancer. We recommend hanging ballet slippers by their ribbons on the wall.

5. Unicorns Galore

Unicorn shaped wicker basket with blanket in it.

An eternal kid favorite, unicorns had to make our list. We love a thematic wicker basket for a fun and useful storage option.

6. Soothing Watercolors

Watercolors are calming and beautiful for any age, but especially for baby. Incorporate this theme into your little one’s bedding to help them relax into sleep.

7. Bountiful Butterflies

Baby on butterfly sheets in crib.

Babies are captivated by butterflies, so try crib sheets featuring an array of gentle, colorful wings.

8. Little Princess

Nothing is too good for your little princess, and you can make that part of their nursery theme. A canopy over their crib is a perfect princess detail.

Baby Boy Nursery Themes

For classic baby boy themes, look to shades of blue and other favorite boys’ room things, like cars and trucks .

9. Mini Athlete

Sports-themed bed sheets.

For your future athlete, try a sporty print on their bedding. You can even display old athletic trophies on a shelf with their new favorite baby books.

10. Moody Blues

Navy blue angled bookcase near plant and wall art.

Who says a nursery has to be all bright colors? A shelf in deep shades of blue or green will help create a calming room.

11. Wee Western

Is there anything cuter than a pint-sized cowboy? Don’t forget a classic rocking horse to complete this theme.

12. Star Wars

Black and white crib with star wars bedding.

Raising a tiny storm trooper? Make sure their nursery has all the right Star Wars ™ gear to prepare them to conquer the universe.

13. Trucks for Tots

What is it that makes little ones love trucks so much? Celebrate their fascination with a truck nursery, complete with a sweet themed lamp.

Gender Neutral Nursery Themes

Looking for a gender neutral nursery theme? Draw inspiration from the things that make you happy, like a sunny blue sky or your family pet. Here are some more fun themes.

14. Zoo Animals

Decorative fox pillow.

Lions, tigers and bears are just the start for this theme. Try a framed fabric print to bring a touch of the great outdoors home to your little one.

15. Pretty Polka Dots

Polka dots can be classy or whimsical, depending on their size and color. Try mixing big and small dots to add a dose of fun to the baby’s room.

16. Comfy and Cozy

Stack of monogrammed baby blankets

No matter what your theme, you want to give your baby a cozy environment. Remember to decorate with an abundance of soft textures, like a plush mobile, fuzzy floor pillows and a soft rug.

17. Hearts for Days

Make sure your little one knows how much they’re loved with a heart theme. We like the idea of a heart garland hung on a wall to serve as a constant reminder that they are adored.

18. Black and White

Black and white themed nursery with plant.

Babies respond to high contrast images, and a black and white room can be baby-friendly and can also grow with your little one. You can also add a splash of color to give it added personality.

19. Plush Animals

Toddlers on monogrammed rocking toys

What better way to introduce your baby to the world’s wonderful creatures than by filling their nursery with plush versions they can play with?

20. So Many Stripes

Stripes are fun, festive and never go out of style, so you can keep the same decorations for years to come.

21. Geometrics

A geometric theme is timeless and easy to achieve. Try colorful blocks, a graphic mobile, and a printed rug to tie the room together.

22. Sweet Dreams

Nursery with cloud wallpaper

Soft, cozy and comforting, a dream-themed nursery is on trend and easy to decorate.

23. Destination Nursery

All about travel? An airplane mobile and framed maps are perfect for showing baby the world from the comfort of their crib.

24. A Little Nautical

Baby in blue whale themed swaddle

A nautical theme , with its soothing blues, is wonderful for a new baby. Bonus points if you swaddle them in something blue, too.

25. Very Vintage

Earth friendly and in vogue, a vintage theme for baby’s room won’t go out of style.

26. Little Library

Wooden bookcase with tree branch legs.

Looking to raise a little reader? Surround them with all things books early on, from packed bookcases to literary decor.

27. Cute Confections

If you’re raising a tiny baker, a confection-themed nursery, decorated with cookie and cake motifs, is perfect. Add fun details like a play baking set displayed on the shelf.

28. Naturally Neutrals

Dad and baby in rocking chair in nursery

For a nursery that can grow into a toddler’s room and beyond, choose a pleasing palette of furniture in neutral colors.

29. A Tiny Forest

Studies show that looking at greenery is good for our health, so fill your baby’s room with towering trees—even if they’re just on the wallpaper.

30. Delightful Doodles

Playful doodle art is a welcome addition to any nursery, and as baby-friendly as it is whimsical. If you have an older child, frame some of their art to contribute to the nursery’s theme.

31. Mini Musician

There are so many ways to decorate your baby’s room with music, including displaying your instruments (safely out of reach) in their room.

32. Color Wheel

Rainbow stripe kids rug with fruit toys and basket.

Blue and orange, violet and yellow; decorate with color wheel pairings to inspire your budding artist.

33. Rainbow Everything

Nothing is quite as stimulating for a little one as a room full of different hues. Plus, this one is easy to decorate—any color goes.

34. Baby Name

Acrylic name wall sign over desk with lamp.

You likely deliberated for months over their name, so now that they’re here, celebrate it. You can paint their name on the wall or in a mural, or you can spell it out with decorative letters .

35. Farmhouse Fun

Farm animals are a classic childhood favorite, and for good reason. Is there anything cuter than lambs and piglets? You can sneak in some rustic-chic barn-inspired decor, too.

36. Baby Bunnies

Bunny wallpaper

Nothing says “baby” like soft and sweet bunnies. Decorative wallpaper, decor or bedding will add baby-friendly color and texture, too.

37. Shades of White

The right shade of white makes any space feel fresh, soft and calming. Decorate in varying shades of white to create a tranquil nursery.

NV obtains new photos and videos of the elimination of traitorous ex-MP Ilya Kyva near Moscow

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Photos and videos of the elimination of pro-Russian ex-MP Ilya Kyva in a Moscow suburb were obtained by NV from sources in Ukraine’s SBU Security Service on Dec. 11.

This special operation was meticulously planned and successfully executed, the SBU informant confirmed.

In one imgae, Kyva's lifeless body can be seen in the snow surrounded by bloodstains. The location where “deserved punishment awaited the traitor” is near the place that Kyva filmed many anti-Ukrainian videos, sources say.

Kyva was a high-priority target, SBU said. His daily routines, movements, and habits were extensively studied in the operation. Despite strong security, the SBU managed to eliminate him just outside Moscow.

“This [Kyva’s elimination] serves as a signal to all traitors and military criminals who have sided with the enemy. Remember: Russia will not protect you. Death is the only prospect awaiting enemies of Ukraine,” SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk said.

Ukraine’s SBU eliminated Kyva in a special operation in Moscow Oblast on Dec. 6, said NV sources in the intelligence service.

Kyva's “bloodied body”, discovered with a shot through the head, was found in the park of an elite club hotel in the Moscow region on Dec.6, Russian propaganda Telegram channels reported.

Kyva was shot with an unidentified firearm and died from the injuries on the scene, the Russian Investigative Committee claimed.

Kyva had fled to Spain ahead of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He then appeared in Russian propaganda broadcasts in Moscow, actively spreading lies about Ukraine. Kyva also sought “political asylum” and citizenship from the enemy aggressor.

The Ukrainian parliament stripped Kyva of his MP status in March 2022, charging him with treason. He was additionally charged with publicly calling for a violent change in the constitutional order and propaganda on behalf of the aggressor state in Aug. 2023.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

travel nursery ideas

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

travel nursery ideas

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

travel nursery ideas

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

travel nursery ideas

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

travel nursery ideas

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
