Multi-Double Platinum-selling pop band, Marianas Trench, released their new album PHANTOMS. The PHANTOMS album serves as a self-contained universe for the band’s songs to exist in –

a house possessed by the spirit of lingering loss and inhabited by someone who’s being driven into madness by the ghost of a former love. Like past records, PHANTOMS finds the Vancouver-based four-piece pushing their musical boundaries relentlessly. From the jaw-dropping a cappella opener, Eleonora to its unapologetically epic closer, The Killing Kind, PHANTOMS sheer emotional weight and brutal honesty will leave a lasting mark on listeners. The first single I Knew You When was released in the Fall of 2018 and charted for 6 months at Hot AC and CHR radio. It reached the Top 10 at Hot AC radio.

In early May of this year, the most recent music video, Only the Lonely Survive was released. The video involved submissions from the bands fan base, known as the Trenchers. Amongst the quarantine restrictions each band member was able to film their parts separately and the video was edited to include pieces of each fans submission. With a slew of Top 10 radio hits to it’s credit such as Who Do You Love, Rhythm of Your Heart, Fallout, and Haven’t Had Enough, Marianas Trench is constantly pushing the boundaries of pop and translating that into their explosive live shows. Last year, the band completed three headlining tours in the USA, Canada, and Europe.

Live reviews

Marianas Trench came and performed in New Zealand for the first time and I was lucky enough to be able to go and be part of their concert that kicked off their tour.

They are practically unheard of in NZ so they were provided with a small venue with minimal fancy lighting/effects/etc AND IT COULDN'T HAVE MATTERED LESS. They were full of energy and got the crowd going and they were excellent in their music too. Josh's vocal were incredible and the harmonies provided by Mike and Matt (lead guitar and bass) were awesome and blended perfectly.

I loved their interactions with the crowd as they were funny and involving, doing things like replying to comments and wearing the ridiculous sunglasses someone handed to them. I had an awesome time and was dancing the entire night and I wasn't the only one. Despite how unknown they were, the small crowd was loud and passionate and I'm sure that it would be even crazier in bigger venues.

I can't decide on a favourite song of the night as they were all fantastic but tracks that really got us jumping were 'Celebrity Status' and 'Desperate Measures' and the songs 'Beside You' and 'So Soon' were gorgeous and heartfelt. The concert had an awesome atmosphere and with the band's talent and energy, it was one of the best I've been to.

The first time that I saw Mariana's Trench I had actually never heard of them or any of their music before. I had gone to see the band Ghost Town on the Journey's Tour in early 2013, however, while waiting for the signing time to begin Mariana's Trench was preforming since they were the headliner. I was blown away by everything about this band. Their vocalist/rhythm guitarist has absolutely incredible vocals, this guy can wail while still keeping on perfect time with his guitar, and don't even start me on the amazing instrumentals or we'll be here all day. Their stage presence and set were both incredible, when the vocalist, Josh Ramsay, wasn't singing and confined, he was running around he stage and when he told the crowd to do something he was able to get almost the entire packed venue to go along with it. Needless to say, after witnessing their performance I became a huge fan almost instantly and still listen to them like crazy today. If you're looking for a unique band that can be powerful and love very diverse lyrics, then you will absolutely love these guys!

Canadian pop outfit Marianas Trench have been working as a unit since the early 2000s and despite their obscure name sake, they have gained a global cult following for their pop/rock sounds. The original lineup has stood the test of time thus far and this always helps with onstage dynamics and interaction with the fans.

The fans are really passionate about the music and the band themselves, screaming and cheering to deafening levels as the band steps out and applauds the rather unexpected scene. The devotees prove themselves once again by eagerly singing back the choruses in time with lead singer Josh Ramsay. Although this band is considered a pop/rock outfit, you cannot deny the musicians have some great musical abilities and clearly care about the live aspect of the sound when performing. They whip the crowd into a suitable frenzy by the time they are ready to close with 'Fallout' and 'Shake Tramp'. The stage setup may have been minimal but this well considered setlist was more than enough to enthuse the fans tonight.

Went to the show last night (14 Nov) at the Scala in London, it was the first opportunity I had to see them live (I have been listening to them for around about a year and half) since they don't come to the UK very often.

I got a friend of mine that I introduced to their music to come with me and we both had an amazing night! Josh's vocals were unbelievable, hitting some almost impossible high notes with ease.

The crowd were instantly getting involved, singing the lyrics back to a very energetic Josh (lead singer)

and the rest of the band. Although it was a small venue you could feel the passion and love for music both being sung and listened to.

The band as a whole were incredible and clearly really loved what they were doing, Josh's enthusiasm and stage presence and exceptional vocal range reminded of the late, great legend Freddie Mercury. Not a comment I say lightly at all.

All in all it was an amazing experience and I will be the first in line the next time they come back to LONDON!

This was my third time seeing Marianas Trench live and my second time seeing them with floor seats. Opener Shawn Hook was great and did an entertaining intro for them. It was disappointing though that Josh was not feeling well so he couldnt sing most of the songs the way he normally would. He let the audience sing most of the songs for him and Matt Webb as well. They played quite a few songs from their older albums which I was so happy about!:)

Songs: Astoria, Celebrity Status, Desperate Measures, Good To You, Pop 101, Shutup and Kiss Me, One Love, Cross My Heart, Who Do You Love, This Means War, End of An Era, Burning Up, Fallout, Stutter, Havent Had Enough, All to Myself. Not in that order. :)

I have waited for 5 years to see this band in concert. I finally did last night, July 23, and it was by far the best night of my life. I didn't think it was possible to love this band anymore than I already did, but I do. Usually when you listen to such high-low vocally ranged bands, you assume the sound quality and the vocals will be lost when seeing them live; however, Marianas Trench didn't lose a single quality. If at all possible, it sounded as if they improved live. The whole band gave off such a friendly vibe. They didn't act as if they were there for the money, they were there for their love of music and performance; for their fans. Can't wait to see this group again.

It was spectacular, Josh (the main singer) had scar tissue in his throat and was told he was not allowed to sing until new years, he didn't want to cancel another whole tour so I was very very very surprised when he hit every high note perfectly, he even added some more into the songs! All the songs were amazing and he also went into the audience and played the "One Love" on the piano (while he was on the floor). It was amazing, the opening acts were great too! All the guys put on a great show! Josh also added lots of funny things into the concert it was hilarious!

Rating: 10/10, best concert I have ever been too!

I have loved marianas trench since I was born, well basically since I was born, when I was 4 my favorite song was cross my heart! and when I was 8 my mom brought me to a concert. It changed my life. All of these other bands were playing and that was cool, but when the lights turned off and the crowd started to cheer, I knew that it was time, then I saw Josh on the stage, my heart was pounding, and when he started singing I thought I was in heaven!!! I have loved them ever since, I am so grateful for marianas trench, I don't know what I would do without them

The concert was an absolute blast! Marianas Trench was so inclusive with the audience and chill. They played a few new songs from their newest album and a lot of the fan favorites. They would even let the audience pick a song for them to sing. The main singer came out at the end on stage to talk to the audience and would make jokes. He even picked a song to sing with just him and the audience. This concert was my first concert ever and I wouldn't trade it for any other band. It was an awesome experience.

The show was fantastic! All the songs were great, Josh hit every note, it was magical. They put on a great concert and sound every bit as good live as they do on their records. It could only have been made better by more songs :-) Josh was also great with the kids, letting one sing a bit when he was out in the audience, and pointing out a little girl in the balcony that was dancing along to all the music. Such a great guy and band. My regret is that I can't go back again every night to watch them.

Marianas Trench

Marianas Trench

When Marianas Trench’s lead singer Josh Ramsay came up with the title Astoria, he saw the album as a concept record based on 1980’s fantasy adventure films; specifically The Goonies, which is set in the seemingly doomed town of Astoria, Oregon.

The idea was to let a classic coming of age movie inspire the music and overall feel of the record. Then, however, Ramsay had no idea the circumstances in his own life would result in a personal journey that took him from the highest high to the darkest point in his life and career. “A couple of years ago I felt on top of the world,” he says: “My band, finally, after years of work, signed a huge American record deal. We were headlining arenas in Canada. I’d been nominated for a Grammy for ‘Call Me Maybe,’ (Carly Rae Jepsen). I was engaged to the love of my life and it was like, this is my moment.”

Soon afterwards, Ramsay’s mother – who, along with his entire musical family, he credits as his most important influences – was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia – a debilitating, fast-acting “cross between Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.” That and the self-imposed pressure of writing and recording Astoria put him into a tailspin. “I worked myself into not being able to write at all. My mother got sicker. I wasn’t coping well and I became incredibly difficult to be around.” So difficult, in fact, his relationship with his fiancé deteriorated swiftly and ultimately ended.

The pressure to start work on the next Marianas Trench record intensified even more, until, in early 2015, he was briefly hospitalized. “It was the lowest of my low moments, but then something shifted. I thought; I can’t make my mom better or fix my mistakes. The only thing in my power was to write Astoria, follow every artistic impulse I have and see where it goes.”

Within 24 hours of his release, Ramsay was in his Richmond, BC studio with new material pouring out of him, but ultimately moved, lock, stock and console, to his Gastown apartment, which he christened ‘The Benhouse Studio’ (named for his Labrador Retriever, who gets an executive producer credit on Astoria). “I thought why not record here? It’s more accessible and I liked the idea that the place I’d felt the worst in my life could maybe turn into the place I did the best thing I’ve ever done.”

The band decorated the space with 1980’s movie posters and album jackets, and packed it with recording and instrument technology that would only have been available in the eighties. But while Astoria has a decidedly eighties feel, it’s far from a throwback. “I was trying to make the record as if I’d been a contemporary at that time. I pulled from that time in my own way.”

“Josh was like, ‘we’re going to live it,’” says guitarist Matt Webb. “He said: ‘I’m going to show up everyday in leather pants.’ So we tightened up our pants, threw tank tops on and pretended we were eighties rock and roll stars.”

Ramsay and the rest of the band researched sounds relentlessly, drawing on their large collection of vintage gear. “If we were looking for a part that sounded like the Eurythmics we’d find out what guitars, mics and preamps they used and sit there with giant grins on our faces when we got those sounds,” Webb says.

“What I wanted to do once I had the Benhouse set up was have people, musicians or not, who’ve meant something in my life, and get them on the record,” Ramsay says. Among them; The Odds’ Craig Northey, 54-40’s Dave Genn and Roger Joseph Manning Jr., of one Ramsay’s favourite bands, Jellyfish. “But my favourite thing is that Astoria ends with an a cappella refrain sung by my family, including my mother.”

With free form epics such as the opening title track and album closer ‘End Of An Era,’ emotionally raw offerings like ‘Wildfire’ and ‘This Means War,’ Astoria is a fitting follow up to Marianas Trench’s Platinum-selling, concept-based releases Masterpiece Theatre (2009) and Ever After (2011). Channeling influences as diverse as The Beatles, Queen, Tears for Fears, Michael Jackson, George Michael and Depeche Mode, among others, it’s Marianas Trench’s most ambitious record to date: unapologetically cinematic, constantly surprising and featuring lush orchestral textures that segue seamlessly into spare, but powerful songs like the standout ‘Dearly Departed.’

Tracks like ‘Shut Up And Kiss Me’ and ‘While We’re Young’ take on the best and worst moments of Ramsay’s recent life, but as deeply personal as they are, they’re the kind of songs anyone with a pulse can slip into and see their lives reflected in. And nowhere more so than on lead single, ‘One Love,’ which poses the question, ‘What if the one true love’s the only one that you get?’ “There’s not a lot of metaphor there,” Ramsay says. “It’s a bleak fear I feel, but at the same time it’s hopeful.”

While ‘One Love’ will resonate with virtually anyone on the first listen: “I wasn’t going for that at all. I didn’t give a fuck about people relating. I just did, artistically, what I wanted to, but it’s so lyrically candid I’m actually nervous; it’s like someone reading your diary. Still, the record has a lot of hope in it, too. It’s my personal best and the band is better than ever,” he continues; crediting guitarist Matt Webb, bassist Mike Ayley, and drummer Ian Casselman for giving him time to sort his life out. “Nobody pushed and I don’t think I’d have made it through without that support.”

On Astoria, the band members were more a part of the process than previously, and, more than ever, their four-part harmonies are a centerpiece of the record. “It’s like Josh creates a baby and we help pick out the clothes and give it a haircut,” Ayley says.

“But the process was really open,” Casselman puts in, “particularly when we were doing gang vocals with up to 20 people and Josh would say ‘just sing whatever comes to mind.’”

In the end, the band is closer than ever. “I don’t laugh as hard with anybody else,” Webb says, mentioning the band’s often hilarious entry to award shows in everything from oversized hamster balls to a bouncy castle. “Some of the ideas we’ve had have us in tears, laughing about how inconvenient and uncomfortable it’ll be, but one of the reasons we’ve remained so strong is we laugh, a lot.”

Although they’ve toured extensively in the States, when Astoria is released on October 23rd, 2015 on 604 Records in Canada and Cherrytree/Interscope worldwide, it will be their first physical release in the US, and the band can’t wait: “I feel like this is our best moment. For me, Astoria is the record of my career so far – at least until we start the next one and I go crazy again,” Ramsay says, laughing.

Music industry professionals, journalist and artists alike are fond of saying ‘the album is dead.’ Now and again, however, a band like Marianas Trench comes along and puts the boots to that assertion. Put bluntly, each song on Astoria is as strong as the record as a whole and, like the very best of recordings, tells the raw, unvarnished truth, candidly and absolutely fearlessly.   About Marianas Trench: Since their 2006 debut, Fix Me, the Vancouver, BC-based four piece have had two Certified Platinum-selling records (Masterpiece Theatre, Ever After), chart topping hits including ‘Fallout,’ ‘Haven’t Had Enough,’ and ‘Stutter,’ garnered multiple SOCAN and MMVA Awards, number 1 videos on MuchMusic, and JUNO nominations, and won the 2013 JUNO Award for Group of the Year.

Over time Marianas Trench have toured relentlessly in Canada and globally; headlining tours in Australia and New Zealand, and the US. They’ve also headlined events at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto, as well as in the Philippines and South Korea. - See more at: http://www.tbca.com/article/marianas-trench-12382.asp#sthash.mu1YABiR.dpuf

Marianas Trench Sony Centre for the Performing Arts Toronto, ON March 13th, 2019

Words and Photos by Joanna Glezakos

On Wednesday, March 13th, Marianas Trench returned to their second home in Toronto with a performance of their Suspending Gravity Tour at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts. The Vancouver, BC natives had just released their 5th studio album, ‘Phantoms’ on the 1st of March and on the day of this show, it reached #4 on Billboard Canadian Albums. It seems that they’re finally getting the recognition they deserve. That night, the smell of popcorn filling the air from the concession (one of the perks of performing at the Sony Centre) as fans took their seats decked in their brand new Marianas Trench merch. Opening for the band were a DJ set and Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine, who’s powerful vocals echoed throughout the theatre. When it was time for Marianas Trench to perform you could feel the excitement, with a perfectly selected playlist to fill the theatre before their set, fans belted out and danced while they waited for MT to take the stage. Being in such a large venue, they include a video projection on a screen behind them which went along with their newest album’s theme and included preludes for their newest songs. Despite ‘Phantoms’ having only been out for a few days, fans already knew the lyrics and sang along. In fact, most of the show were songs off their most recent album but they did squeeze in a few fan favourites from the past like “Stutter”, “Pop 101”, “Cross My Heart” that turned into “Celebrity Status” and of course when it came time for “Fallout”, Ramsey said “this is all you” and the entire crowd sang the opening. That moment gave me chills as their collective voices made the floor rumble. I haven’t heard a crowd sing like that in a long time, over 3000 voices singing the lyrics to such a powerful song. It gave me goosebumps. Wherever you’d look in the crowd, everyone was rocking out, there’d be friends with their arms around each other or young couples either snuggling and dancing along to their favourite tunes. A few rows ahead of me were a family of three, Mom, Dad and the little one all knew the words and were dancing together. It was really heartwarming to see. No judgement, just everyone enjoying themselves. Lead singer, Josh Ramsey, even took a moment to call out an audience member in the front few rows that was jumping up and down with the biggest smile on their face the whole time. That’s what so special about Marianas Trench, no matter what stage you are in life you can resonate with their music as their powerful melodies and catchy chorus’ get you hooked. Ramsay’s vocals are phenomenal, especially live, I would say his range even greater than that of the legendary Mariah Carey, he can growl and scream and hit notes higher than I’ve ever heard before. His stage presence is so captivating and engaging with all members of the audience, pointing down to those lucky enough to have a front-row spot to every single person in the balcony. It was a truly immersive experience and felt like such a bummer it had to come to an end. Before finishing their set, Ramsey came out to perform an emotional solo version of One Love that went into this writers favourite “Who Do You Love” before ending the night with an explosive performance of  “The Killing Kind”. Every moment had people on their feet, there were no lulls in the performance, it was killer track after killer track. If you weren’t a fan of Marianas Trench before these shows you definitely will be coming out. Be sure to check them out on this tour, it’s one you won’t want to miss and peek our gallery for some of our favourite moments!

Double Platinum Selling Marianas Trench Announce Canadian Tour

TORONTO, ON – Today, multi-double platinum-selling, progressive pop band, Marianas Trench announced their Suspending Gravity Canadian tour which kicks off in Windsor, Ontario on March 6, 2019 at Caesars Windsor Hotel & Casino and wraps on March 29, 2019, at the Orpheum in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The 15-date tour will be held at venues that will give the fans more of an up-close-and-personal live experience, and feature the powerhouse Vancouver quartet’s signature high-energy performance while showcasing material from their forthcoming studio album “Phantoms” in addition to hits from their previous double platinum and gold-selling albums.

“After months of hibernating in the studio, it’s time to get back on stage in front of our fans and share some new music with the world. We couldn’t be more excited. Time to dust off the shiny pants and stretch out the glutes, the Trench is back,” said lead guitarist Matt Webb.

Last week, the band released their latest single “I Knew You When” (604 Records), an upfront take on moving on from a former relationship and the lingering memories that remain. “I Knew You When” is the perfect combination of fresh pop-rock beats that blend seamlessly with lead singer, Josh Ramsay’s incredible vocals.

Watch, listen to the single here.

“I often find pop dance tracks don’t really have much lyrical substance. To quote Dave Grohl, “It’s catchy and fun to dance to, but if your favourite song is about your butt, you have a problem.” I wanted to make a fun pop dance track that actually meant something to me, personally,” added Ramsay.

“This is about long-term, messy, real-life love. Love with consequence. Not about drunken lust, or doing shots in a bar, or “living life for just tonight,” but the kind of real-life relationship that takes a decade to build, through ups and downs. If I’ve learned one thing in my life as a performer it’s this; if you’re going to sing a song every night for the rest of your career, you better mean it – and I do.”

Joining Marianas Trench on tour is platinum-certified, break out Canadian duo Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine. EWxJF is a delicate marriage of exploratory musical styles and masterful emotional play. The duo purposefully breaches the boundaries of pop music touching on many influences including Hip-Hop and R&B that consistently shake up their sound.
