Great Indian Railway Journeys: Series 1 Michael Portillo travels across India guided by his Bradshaw's 1913 Handbook of Indian, Foreign and Colonial Travel.
[ edit ] Amritsar to Shimla
Beginning in the Sikh holy city, Michael is dazzled by the beauty of the Golden Temple and awed by the scale of its langar - the world's largest free kitchen. His route then takes him through the Punjab, India's breadbasket. Michael samples traditional chapattis, has a colourful kurta made up in one of the Punjab's biggest cloth markets, and can't resist the foot-tapping rhythms of Punjabi bhangra dancing, made famous by Bollywood. At Kalka, Michael glimpses the Himalayas for the first time and joins the 1906-built mountain railway for a stunning climb to Shimla.
[ edit ] Jodhpur to Delhi
Michael embarks on a stunning rail journey from the Thar Desert in Rajasthan to the Indian capital, taking in desert landscapes and dazzling historic palaces. From Jodhpur, Michael strikes out into the desert, taking a camel ride to a village where life has changed little in centuries, before embarking on the Jaipur-Agra-Delhi 'Golden Triangle' tour. Continuing east, Michael breaks his journey in drought-prone Bandikui, where he marvels at the extraordinary architecture of one of India's largest and deepest step wells.
[ edit ] Mysuru to Chennai
Michael Portillo's Bradshaw's 1913 Handbook of Indian, Foreign and Colonial Travel leads him on railway journey through the modern south Indian states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, from the former princely state of Mysore to the first stronghold of the East India Company in Chennai, formerly Madras. At sunset Michael joins selfie-stick wielding crowds back at the palace as they wait to capture it being illuminated by thousands of bulbs. An early morning yoga class is the perfect way to stretch out before boarding a train to Bengalaru. After a sticky encounter with a mango, he meets the entrepreneurs whose innovations are driving India's hi-tech boom with inventions from mobile heart scanners to cooking apps.
[ edit ] Lucknow to Kolkata
On an epic railway journey from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh to Kolkata in West Bengal, Michael Portillo uses his Bradshaw's 1913 Handbook of Indian, Foreign and Colonial Travel, published when the British Raj was 55 years old, to chart a course through India's history from the days of The East India Company to the dawn of independence. In Lucknow, Michael tastes the famous local kebabs before seeking the truth about 1857 Siege of Lucknow, a key moment in the rebellion which precipitated the end of the East India Company's grip on India and the start of direct British rule.

Israel launches attack on Iran, US officials say
Great coastal railway journeys: michael portillo says welsh train ride is a 'feast for the eyes'.
Michael Portillo was full of praise for a North Wales train journey which he branded a "feast for the eyes". In the latest episode of BBC One's Great Coastal Railway Journeys, Michael took viewers on an epic trip on one of Britain's most beloved heritage lines - the Welsh Highland Railway - and appeared in awe of North Wales' magnificent scenery.
The series, which can be watched in-full on BBC iPlayer, sees Michael embark on some of Britain's most impressive train journeys and soak-up the history, architecture and culture of towns and villages across the nation. In Wednesday's episode, Michael took the Welsh Highland Railway through captivating Eryri National Park, which he referred to by its English name Snowdonia, through historic Caernarfon, and on to Ynys Môn/ Anglesey .
As his journey began, Michael couldn't believe the beauty of the scenes around him. "It's one of the greatest heritage lines," Michael said on-board the train. "The panorama is a feast for the eyes.... This so pretty."

TRAVEL: 'One of world's most epic train journeys' runs so close to sea 'you feel like you’re in it'
As his train ascended uphill through Eryri, viewers were spoilt with shot after shot of beautiful views. Michael made his first stop at Beddgelert and soon took a stroll with a local historian and told viewers all about the area's connections to renowned scientist Charles Darwin.
"The station is a gateway to the spectacular landscape of Snowdonia National Park," he said. "Breath-taking geology inspired one of science's greatest thinkers after a useful field trip in 1831. Charles Darwin transformed our understanding of biology with his Theory of Evolution."
Viewers learnt Charles Darwin enjoyed searching for fossils in the national park and it was this that inspired him to delve deeper into evolution and explore how creatures adapt to their environments over time. Michael then returned to Beddgelert station and boarded the train to historic Caernarfon and, after briefly showing the majestic castle there, he travelled further to the Menai Suspension Bridge, stopping there for a while to marvel at its ahead-of-the-times infrastructure, before taking the train over the bridge and on to Anglesey.
There, Michael marvelled at another bridge - the Britannia Bridge - before visiting Anglesey Sea Zoo and joining marine biologists in releasing a conga eel back to the sea. Throughout his trip, he continued to marvel at the stunning views of the North Wales landscape and appeared to recommend the region to visitors from across the UK.
The latest series of Great Coastal Railway Journeys is on BBC iPlayer and is available to watch now. Wednesday's episode with the Welsh Highland Railway is series 3, ep 8.

The broadcaster, who is joining Good Housekeeping readers on a special rail journey aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express next year , explores hidden neighbourhoods and meets up with locals who show him the city’s hidden treasures.

The episode begins in the city centre on the busy Gran Via boulevard, home to Madrid’s famous golden triangle of art museums and El Retiro Park.

Michael Portillo: uncovering history through train travel
The expression "Portillo moment" (a sudden and significant change in political fortunes) was coined after former British MP and cabinet minister Michael Portillo's shock loss of a staunchly Conservative seat at the 1997 UK general election.
Now, Portillo is now most famous for exploring history – with the aid of a 19th-century tourist handbook – on the BBC series Great Railway Journeys .

Portillo filmed the first series of Great British Railway Journeys in 2009, along the way using George Bradshaw's popular Bradshaw's Guide ( 1863) to illustrate the largely forgotten influence of railways on England's social, economic and political history.
A second series was broadcast on the BBC in 2011, and since then nine further series have been made.
Portillo has also travelled around continental Europe with his trusty copy of Bradshaw's 1913 Continental Railway Guide for six series of the programme Great Continental Railway Journeys.
He's also made Great American Railroad Journeys, Great Indian Railroad Journeys, and recently finished filming in Australia.
Despite its title, Portillo is at pains to point out the programme is not really about travelling around on trains.
“Trains obviously play a part, and we discuss how railways were great catalysts in history, but basically I think the programmes are about history.
“It’s about getting off trains, it’s not about being on trains.”
Great British Railways Journeys shows a Britain much-changed modern Britain, especially the north whose former industrial might is much dissipated.
Portillo acknowledges one of the attractions of his programme is nostalgia.
“Nostalgia of two sorts – first for the past, but also for [viewers'] own pasts.
“When you travel around in the north of England, and it would happen in some other places too like South Wales and so on, they have this great industrial past and on the whole now you might encounter it only in museums.”
Bradshaw expressed misgivings about the filth and degradations of industrial northern England in his guides.
“Being nostalgic is not to be confused with going back to the past, which I don’t want to do at all.”
Great British Railways Journeys season five premieres The Living Channel from June 30.

Perth pub-goers serenade Michael Portillo in scenes for new TV show
Drinkers in Perth's Old Ship Inn sung the praises of Michael Portillo's famous flamboyant dress sense
A local folk musician ensured Michael Portillo enjoyed a visit to remember on his last trip to Perth.
Fraser Bruce was invited to perform with the politician-turned-TV personality in the city’s Old Ship Inn.
And the Auchterarder singer and author enlisted the whole pub in a rousing performance of a surprise new song written specially for the occasion.
The chorus goes:
“Oh, oh, oh Portillo. He is such a well dressed fellow. Blue and red, Green and yellow. His choice of cloots amazing.”
Fraser, 77, said the star took the adulation in his stride.
And viewers can see the results for themselves on the BBC iPlayer now .
It features in episode 10 of the latest series of Great British Railway Journeys.
Mr Portillo travels from Dundee to the Loch of the Lowes in the programme.
In addition to his pub singalong, he visits Perth’s Wellshill Cemetery and discovers the graves of 355 of the thousands of Polish soldiers, sailors, and airmen who fought for the Allies from British bases.
In Dundee he learns more about Joseph McKenzie, who’s regarded as the father of modern Scottish photography.
And at the Loch of the Lowes, he watches the nature reserve’s famous pair of breeding ospreys.

Fraser has been involved in the folk scene since he was a youth.
He has recorded eight albums under his own steam, and been involved in many more.
He is also the author of a book , titled The Folk River – Tales of the Early Scottish Folk Club Scene.
And it was this that caught the attention of the Michael Portillo programme researchers.
“The researchers were also aware that I am a songwriter,” said Fraser.
“And they asked if I could write a semi-humorous song about Michael Portillo. So I did.
“He was great. He just sat there giggling while the whole pub sang along.”
Fraser said he was delighted to help put Perth in the spotlight.
And he enlisted the help of some fellow luminaries of the Scottish folk scene.
Fiddle player, Pete Clark, one of the organisers of the annual Niel Gow Fiddle Festival at Birnam, accompanied the singalong.
Alastair McDonald, who hosted his own BBC TV series with Peter Morrison for many years years, joined in.
And Fraser’s musical partner Gavin Paterson completed the line-up.

Great British Railway Journeys: Michael Portillo visits Wensleydale Railway in Yorkshire for 15th series
Michael Portillo visited the Wensleydale Railway for the 15th series of Great British Railway Journeys.
In the April 5 episode of the BBC documentary programme, the former politician and railway enthusiast heads to the Yorkshire Dales to enjoy a trip on the volunteer-run, preserved heritage line.

[introduction to each episode]
Michael Portillo : In 1840, one man transformed travel in Britain. His name was George Bradshaw, and his railway guides inspired the Victorians to take to the tracks. Stop by stop, he told them where to travel, what to see and where to stay. Now, a hundred and seventy years later, I'm making four long journeys across the length and breadth of the country to see what remains of Bradshaw's Britain.

The fresco «Holiday in Kiev», made in 1953 was practically destroyed in 2010, due to an accident during nearby constructing works. While the fresco recovery, restorers revived its original appearance that had gone through many changes since its creation.
Ploshad Revolutsii
The station was opened on March 13, 1938. The most interesting feature of the station is 76 bronze figures, situated in niches of 18 arches. Artist Ivan Nikolaev, the author of the decoration, said that depicting scenes of violence shows depth and tragedy of Dostoevsky’s work.
2. General information about Moscow metro
Metro working hours, navigation, wi-fi.
The Moscow Metro is open from about 5:30 am until 1:00 am. The precise opening time varies at different stations according to the arrival of the first train, but all stations simultaneously close their entrances and transitions to other lines at 01:00 am for maintenance. The minimum interval between trains is 90 seconds during the morning and evening rush hours. Each line is identified according to an alphanumeric index (usually consisting of a number), a name and a color. Voice announcements in Russian refer to the lines by name and by numbers in English. A male voice announces the next station when traveling towards the center of the city or the clockwise direction on the circle line, and a female voice – when going away from the center or the counter-clockwise direction at the circle. The lines are also assigned specific colors for maps and signs.
Free Wi-Fi is called MT_FREE and available on all 14 lines (inside the trains).
Using Metro services is frequently the fastest and the most efficient way to get from one part of the city to another. But during daytime Moscow Metro stations are usually overcrowded so if you want to just enjoy the beauty of the underground, it’s better to visit it late in the evening.
MCC and MCD
Since 2016 The Moscow Metro is connected to two new types of rail transport. The first one is MCC – Moscow Central Circle. It has 31 stations around the city with changes to metro stations (most of them require to walk a few minutes via the street). The second one is MCD, Moscow Central Diameters, a system of city train services on existing commuter rail lines in Moscow and Moscow Oblast. MCD has several lines, they’re being marked as D1, D2 etc. Changing to both MCC and MCD from the Metro is free when your journey is within the city. Both MCC and MCD lines exist on all of the Moscow Metro maps.
Interesting facts about Moscow metro
213 people were born in the metro during the World War II, when it was used as a bomb shelter.
There are 76 bronze sculptures of workers, peasants, soldiers, sailors, etc. at Ploshchad Revolyutsii station. There is legend connected with this station. To pass any examination successfully, a student should touch the bronze dog’s nose («the Frontier Guard with a Dog» sculpture). You can easily understand high popularity of this legend by looking at the polished nose of the dog.
It is said that some of the magnificent mosaics at several central stations, for example the «World Peace» mosaic at Novoslobodskaya, were made with the pieces of enamel and smalt, taken from the famous Christ the Savior Cathedral, before it’s destruction.
As any other dungeon the Moscow metro, has its own ghosts. The most famous one is the old lineman. He is not dangerous and usually hides into the wall, when people appear. The ghostly metro train is much more dangerous. It appears after midnight at the Circle Line and consists of old-time carriages. It sometimes stops at the stations and opens its doors, and then goes back into the darkness. It is said that the souls of Stalin’s prisoners, perished during the building of the metro are locked in the train forever.
