List of U.S. Motorcycle Tour Operators 2020
With international travel in 2020 looking less certain by the week (and possibly risky, not just health-wise but also with the possibility of becoming stranded or quarantined outside the U.S.), this might be a great time to explore this beautiful country.
While you could certainly peruse back issues of Rider (or do some research here on our website) in search of ride ideas throughout the country, you’ll still be on the hook for logistical planning, hotel reservations and knowing whether or not the gas station in that tiny desert town is still open…not to mention handling the “what-ifs” of mechanical issues or a crash. Or you could let a tour company handle all of it, leaving you free to enjoy the ride.
All the companies on this list run scheduled, guided motorcycle tours in the United States using rental motorcycles — either their own fleet or rented from a local source — but you should obviously check with them right off the bat to make sure they’re still running tours this year.
Most have a chase vehicle to carry your luggage and gear and to deal with mechanical issues that may occur en route. Some companies will allow you to ride your own bike, but check for any restrictions. The information here is provided by the companies, and not guaranteed by Rider .

Best Motorcycle Touring Companies
Just show up and let the good times roll...
Nothing spells adventure like hitting the open road on a motorcycle with your family and friends. America is an incredibly big country, encompassing seemingly endless places to go and see. With all its vastly different landscapes and attractions, the U.S. is a haven for motorcycle travel and adventure. So, where do you even start? Well, you could plan your own trip, map out your route, make your lodging arrangements, find places to eat and fuel up along the way, and hope you don’t run into any bike troubles. Or, you can kick back, relax, and let one of the many motorcycle touring companies here in the U.S. take care of all that for you. After all, they’re experts on the subject with everything you need to know, and more. All you have to do is enjoy the ride and the beautiful scenery (and fork over a little cash).
Another major bonus when booking through a motorcycle touring company is that you don’t have to ride your own bike, worry about it breaking down, or worse, fix it on the side of the road with tools you forgot to bring. Fortunately, the motorcycle touring companies listed below use rentals or bikes within their own fleet, so if something happens and they break down, it becomes someone else’s problem, not yours.
The first step to planning your future motorcycle tour is deciding where you want to go, what you want to see, and where you’re going to start. Many of the following motorcycle touring companies specialize in certain regions of the country, but they’re spread out all over the place, because there’s great riding everywhere. So, odds are there’s something near you. Once you’re all signed up, just don’t forget you motorcycle touring necessities and your camera, because any of these motorcycle tours could and should be a trip of a lifetime.

Edleweiss has been doing this whole guided motorcycle adventure tour thing for 38 years, with over 2,350+ tours in more than 180 different destinations worldwide. You could say they know a thing or two about a thing or two when it comes to motorcycle trips. For guided tours here in the U.S., Edelweiss offers an Alaska/Yukon adventure, a West Coast California/Oregon/Washington trip, a Southwest Arizona/California/Utah/Nevada ride, and if you’re really looking for some two-wheeled adventure, a North/Central American tour from Hollywood all the way down to Panama City. Edelweiss’ tours range from shorter week or two-week long tours, or you can spend up to 75 days in the saddle – it’s up to you!

Moto Discovery
Moto Discovery has been around since 1981, and they’ve been riding the often overlooked roads of the world seeking authentic destinations off the beaten path. That’s right, the world. There’s almost virtually nowhere Moto Discovery doesn’t operate. For riders looking to explore dual-sport and ADV routes here in America, Moto Discovery offers guided tours in Colorado, Alaska, Utah and Arizona. Almost all the rides Moto Discovery and its tour guides take you on are dirt roads. There’s no boring interstate freeway travel here.
For more information about the company and how you can get linked up, check out www.motodiscovery.com .
MotoQuest started in Alaska – yup, Alaska – and has since spread to all over the world. MotoQuest likes to keep their guided tour groups on the smaller, more intimate side with the motto: small groups, big adventures. This guided motorcycle touring company is more ADV oriented and prefers to take the path less traveled into places and destinations one might never expect to go for real-life experiences with the locals. Their U.S. tours are primarily focused all over Alaska, the Yukon, and all the way down the West Coast into Baja Mexico, but there are guided tours on every single continent, too, except Antarctica…
For more info and how to get started, head to motoquest.com .
RawHyde Adventures
RawHyde Adventures is another ADV-focused motorcycle touring company. In the United States, there are 4,127,000 miles of public roads, and of those, 1,392,000 are unpaved, including most of the roads in our National Parks. That means nearly one-third of the available roads in the U.S. are ones that most folks don’t get to investigate or ride. That’s where RawHyde Adventures comes in. This ADV guided motorcycle touring company has routes all over California, Baja Mexico, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. There are also routes down into South America. All of these rides are professionally guided, range from five days to multiple-week journeys and are offered year round so long as the particular route isn’t snowed in!
For more details and information on how to get registered, head over to rawhyde-offroad.com .
Rocky Mountain Moto Adventures
From the Canadian and Colorado Rockies to the Pacific Northwest, our National Parks, Alaska, and the Pacific Coast Highway, the options are almost limitless with Rocky Mountain Moto Adventures. All you have to do is show up ready to ride, RMMA will handle the rest. You can keep it short with a two-day ride from Southern California to Las Vegas, or stretch it out to three weeks across Alaska and Canada. Whether you’re a newer rider or a seasoned veteran, Rocky Mountain Moto Adventures has a guided tour in a location you’ll never forget.
More info and scheduling availability can be found at rockymountainmotoadventures.com .
Twisted Road
Twisted Road isn’t a guided motorcycle touring company, but we felt it needed to be included on this list because you should know about it. Basically, it’s AirBnB for your motorcycle. Twisted Road members can rent other people’s motorcycles – or rent out their own as well. If you’re travelling somewhere and would like to ride a motorcycle, you can log onto Twisted Road to see who’s bike you can rent and for how long – and vice versa for renting out your own motorcycle when you’re not using it. Motorcycle owners/renters can then give you local knowledge about roads to ride and places to see. It’s pretty neat!
For more information and details on how you can become a member, visit twistedroad.com .
Women’s Motorcycle Tours
By women, for women, this guided motorcycle touring company is focused on supporting women and encouraging them to pursue two-wheeled adventure both on- and off-road as well as promoting the camaraderie that comes with it. Their tours span all four corners of the U.S. and even include Cuba and Africa if you’re really looking to get off the grid. The tours range from 10 days to three weeks and explore some of America’s most scenic locations. Talk to your girlfriends, wives and sisters, and do something different, hit the road!

Check out Native Moto Adventures, based in San Francisco. www.ridenative.com
I was in SF on a business trip and wanted to explore the backroads with locals, on 2 wheels ideally. They hooked me up with one of their bikes (KTM Adventure R) and we covered over 120 miles of stunning scenery in one full day. Jen + Saf were great, and very personable. Will make sure to book a longer tour with them next time i'm in the Bay Area.

For BMW motorcycle tours in Europe I recommend Adventure Motorcycle Tours and Rentals, a BMW Motorrad travel partner based in Transylvania one hour away from Transfagarasan and Transalpina, some of the most beautiful road for a rider. Transylvania''s main airport Cluj Napoca is 30 minutes away from the garage and so is Turda Salt Mine and Turda Gorges. https://motorcycle-tours.travel/

Motorcycle Tour Operators: A look into what this dream job is really like
Many passionate motorcycle riders often dream about turning their hobby into a paid profession. Just imagine burning your office-tie right in front of your boss’s face, smashing a stapler through your computer screen, and saying good-bye to the 9-5 life by riding your V-twin right through the break room and out the front door!
Well, aside from the dramatic exit, a few have forgone the fear that comes with this drastic change and went for it. We were lucky enough to get in touch with two individuals who have made this life changing decision and are on opposing-extremes of the motorcycle tour operating business. We asked them what it’s really like to run this unique kind of business and how this decision has impacted their lives. Keith, from RentAlaska.com , the man who pioneered the industry 25-years ago in Alaska, tells us about some less thought about business plan ideas. Like those times when your client drives through a moose. Further to the South, we sat down with Chris, the owner and operator of BoliviaMotorcycleTours.com . A look into what it takes to move your American dream South of the border. Chris tells us what it’s like to move out of America and set up shop in sub-tropical to sub-zero Bolivia. Here’s a look at what each one had to say about the business.
First up, a look into Keith’s Alaskan operation from RentAlaska.com
Explain your business and how long you have been in business; We rent motorcycles to independent travelers and provide bikes, guides, and support vehicles for tour companies from all around the globe. Riding in Alaska is a ‘bucket list’ item for most riders. We make it easy! This is our 25th year.
What bikes do you use and why? We rent mostly BMW GS models. We have a few Tiger 800’s and KLR 650’s as well. The dual sport bikes can easily handle the large distances between attractions and are ideal for the amazing gravel highways up here. They can also cope with the occasional parking lot drop without damage to body panels.
How many in your fleet? We currently have 38 bikes in the fleet. All the GS models from the lowered G650GS to the R1200GS Adventure.
How long is the motorcycle season in Alaska/Yukon? Mid-May to Mid-September. With 24-hours of daylight from late May to early August.
What are some of the more ridiculous questions you get asked about riding Alaska? Can I ride to Nome? Will it rain? Do I have to pay for the bike if I go on a fishing trip?
Any issues with wildlife and the bikes? We have had close calls with bears, caribou, wolves, and musk ox. The worse was a rider who center punched a moose. The moose died and the rider was severely injured but survived. He returned three-years later to complete his dream ride to Prudhoe Bay.
With such a range of international clients, have you ever had any issues with people? Some have arrived without a motorcycle endorsed license. They get to rent a car. A few have rented a bike that is too tall, we try to get them on a smaller bike for safety reasons. I have some interesting stories from guiding tours.
What’s the best route for people to ride in your neck of the woods? Anchorage to Valdez is my favorite ride. The Kenia Peninsula south of Anchorage is also great. The Denali Highway (Route 8) is 120 miles of good gravel for riders wanting to get off the pavement.
Your web page says you “Pioneered the industry”, what were those first years like having just two-bikes to rent? Life was simple back then, but I still remember my first trip to the Anchorage Airport to pick up a stranger to put on our new R100GS PD. I was nervous to say the least!
What is your favorite part about running a motorcycle tour company in Alaska? Meeting interesting people from all over the world and sharing our vast knowledge of this vast State.
If you could have this same business in tropical Hawaii, would you move? I would not give up the Summers in Alaska, but would consider a more tropical climate from November through March!
Next, we’ll head down to South America to hear what things are like at BoliviaMotorcycleTours.com
Explain your business & how long you’ve been in business; We are a small, family-run motorcycle touring operation based in El Torno, Santa Cruz, Bolivia in South America. We offer guided, all-inclusive, single, and multi-day motorcycle tours throughout the country of Bolivia. We visit some of the most well-known destinations in the country, such as the Uyuni Salt Flats, Lake Titicaca, the Death Road, as well as numerous lesser-known locations. As of this February, we began our second full year of operation. Our first year was far more successful than we could have hoped for and we look forward to building upon that success this year.
Bolivia, really, why did you choose there, is it safe? Why not Bolivia? I’ve lived in and visited many different countries and can’t think of a better place to ride and raise a family than right here. Sure, living here requires some adjustments and it has its ups and downs, but the same can be said of most anyplace that’s different than where we were raised. As for what brought me to Bolivia, it’s rather simple, my wife. She was born and raised in Bolivia so when we met in college in the U.S, things progressed from there and I had a very good idea that making the move to Bolivia at some point was most likely in the cards. Unlike what many people might expect, safety concerns have not been an issue for my family, or our tour guests. By–in-large, Bolivia is a very safe place to live and work.
What types of bikes do you use and why? In making plans to start our business, we opted for the Kawasaki KLR650 as our bike of choice. Having owned a KLR for several years before starting the business, I was well aware of its strengths and weaknesses. The KLR has been one of the most used bikes by RTW travelers, known for its reliability and it’s on & off-road capabilities. Understanding the extreme variety of terrain that we’d encounter on our tours, the KLR just made the most sense and we’ve been very satisfied with our decision. Rather than sticking to the stock KLR set-up, we’ve made several tactful modifications to further enhance its performance and reliability.
Did you have any troubles importing the bikes from the USA? Latin America is famous for its bureaucracy, Bolivia certainly is no exception. Suffice it to say, getting bikes that are setup to run well near sea level, run well and pass an emissions test at an elevation slightly greater than 13,500 feet at the inspection center outside of the high-altitude city of La Paz, is no simple task! Especially with limited parts available. Eventually after nearly a month and a half, we prevailed and our bikes were released from customs.
Why did you decide to do this? I love to work, in fact being idle is a real struggle for me, yet at the same time being on the clock in a more conventional type of job leaves me with a rather empty, unfulfilled type of feeling. Since motorcycles have been a passion of mine for several years and I was already living in what many consider to be one of the top adventure motorcycling countries in the world, it just made sense.
Does it make you rich? Financially, certainly not, nor did we expect it to. As I project the business out a few years down the road, I expect the same to be true and I’m fine with that. On the other hand, the word “rich” can also be understood in a different light. For instance, I feel incredibly blessed to be in the position that I am, very fulfilled in the work that I do, and with the new friends that I’ve made, which to me equates to a type of richness that’s impossible to quantify.
You have two boys, 6 & 8, do they go on the tours? Yes and no. My sons are motorcycle fanatics, so given the opportunity they would never miss a tour. That being said, I have taken my sons on both single and multi-day tours, just not with our guests. Since many of our scheduled tours take place during my son’s school year, it’s makes taking them with me unfeasible.
Any problems with clients? Since our business opened we’ve been blessed with many incredible guests, many of whom we’ve remained in contact with even after their tour has come to an end, and they’ve returned home. (I’d rather not comment on any particular client related issues. I’m sure it would make for a more interesting read but it seems to me to be a bit tricky to know both how much and what is ok to share.)
Owner, promoter, operator, guide, what’s your favorite hat to wear? To be fair, beyond those hats, I’m also my own mechanic. While I enjoy certain aspects of each of those responsibilities, including wrenching on the bikes, the guide role is easily the one that I relish the most. In one way or another all the other roles tend to lead up to the role of serving as a guide and leading groups and individuals on some incredible tours. I get a lot of satisfaction from hearing guests comment about how much they enjoyed a day’s ride, listening to them recount their experiences, and talk about their excitement for what lies ahead.
Do you have any advice for someone looking to do the same? Owning and running a motorcycle touring business certainly isn’t for everyone, besides just a passion for riding motorcycles, it requires a large helping of dedication, self-motivation, and self-discipline. Along with that, having a good understanding of the cultural context of the place that a person hopes to run their business in is very central to being successful. Not only that but being able to articulate that understanding to guests to help elevate their experience is also key.
Whether your looking to see some of Americans majestic natural spaces a top a BMW GS edition bike in stunning Alaska, or kick your adventure into high-gear with some of the worlds most captivating and lesser known sites on a KLR650 in Bolivia. Each one of these operators make for an excellent way to broaden your bucket list or add some new boxes to check off on your existing one. Who knows maybe it’ll be your motorcycle tour business we visit next.

Choosing the Right Motorcycle Tour Company – Part 3
by Webmaster | Dec 26, 2017 | Motorcycle Tour Operators , Tips and Techniques | 0 comments
With so many to choose from, how do you select which tour company is best for you.? To help decide if a motorcycle tour is worth it, you must consider three important factors: The Value, The Guides, and The Hat .
This is Part #3 of a three-part series meant to help educate you on three things to consider before signing a contract.
You can find the other parts at: Choosing the Right Motorcycle Tour Company – The Value – Part #1 Choosing the Right Motorcycle Tour Company – The Guides – Part #2
The Hat (AKA Which Company is Really Running the Tour):
There is a little-known secret in the tourism industry that the average person doesn’t know, especially when dealing with guided motorcycle tour operators.
Many motorcycle tour operators resell other tour operator’s tours. In fact, many tour operators in other tour specialties resell other tour operator’s packages. In the travel and tourism industry, this is common practice and nothing to immediately raise a flag over. Many national and multi-regional companies rely on local operators to execute the tours they’ve sold.
You have to make sure that the tour operator you book with has more than just a monetary interest in your trip. Even though tour operator XYZ may put their company name on a trip and process your payment, it doesn’t always mean that they had anything to do with planning it and, more importantly, making sure that it’s executed correctly.
You want to make sure that they are just as devoted to your satisfaction as much as the local tour operator that will ultimately execute the tour.
This is one of the many areas where Black Moto Tours does things differently. We are not some national company selling thousands of tours a season. While we could resell dozens of tours from other tour operators, throughout the year, in both Arizona and New York, I chose not to do that with Black Moto Tours. We designed our routes. We put the time and care into perfecting them, and we will be there personally to show you the time of your life on a Black Moto Tours guided motorcycle tour. My team feels the same way I do otherwise, to be honest, they wouldn’t be flying a Black Moto Tours arm patch.
I want to close by saying that I hope you find this information to be educational and helpful when you start to vet motorcycle tour vendors. Remember to consider ALL aspects of your trip and do your research on things like overnight accommodations, fuel options, the quality of your tour guides before signing on the dotted line.

| MANGIA | PIEGA | AMA |

Interview What It’s Like To Run A Motorcycle Tour Company: How to Plan Tours (Part 2)
This is Part 2 of a two-part interview with Hana Ptackova and David Mather, the proprietors of MotoAdventours. Part 1 told you about Hana and David and the beginnings of the company . Part 2 discovers what it’s like to run a motorcycle tour company and what is involved.
RUNNING A MOTORCYCLE TOURING COMPANY
ADVRider : Now that we know a bit about you both, let’s talk about MotoAdventours and what it takes to run the company. Running a moto tour company has to be interesting, exciting and sometimes exasperating. So let’s talk about that a little more in-depth.
The ride from Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe to Cape Town, South Africa is magnificent. All of the pictures below were captured by the author during the tour, except as noted. Photo credit: Mike Botan
ADVRider : How do you decide where to run your tours?
Hana: We are based in Malaga, Spain and there are really amazing roads just outside our door. When the weather is good, it would be crazy to go too far from here, the roads are that good. But like we said earlier, it’s too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter and that’s when we look for other destinations and routes. And again, because we have people coming back, sometimes multiple times in the same year, we always have to be looking for better routes. Like David said earlier, we have to put the ingredients together, look around, find the best and put that together for the group. But we have to be careful about where we go. If a trip doesn’t sell, we won’t run it. We once tried to run a trip to New Zealand, but it didn’t sell and we didn’t end up running the trip. You have to go where the interest is.
Botswana was full of elephants. Photo credit: Mike Botan
Hana: First, we take a map and find destinations that we would like to see and determine what accommodation is available. With the internet, it helps a lot with the pre-planning. We pre-plan everything, put it on paper and fly or ride to where we plan to start the trip. Then we check the roads, sights, accommodations, facilities, and food to make sure that the route is great. David: we are constantly looking for new routes. We check them out, make sure they are interesting, and avoid highways like the plague. Hana: We even plan tours where we ride only half a day and then spend the rest of the day checking out the sights. We try to include other activities as well.
This leopard was hanging around waiting for us to leave so he could retrieve the jackal he killed and had stored in a tree.
There are a lot of different things to think about. For example, certain groups don’t like to get up too early. If you ask them to be a certain place at a certain time, to them it’s an estimate. So the differences in cultures are probably one of the biggest considerations.
He finally grew bored of us and climbed the tree to get his prize. Photo credit: Mike Botan
David: It’s all about confidence. I often drive/ride sweep and I can see people’s confidence. If you’re not confident, riding can be a real chore. So we try to ensure people maintain their confidence. We’ll never tell anyone to speed up, it’s dangerous and it’s not fun for the customer. Hana: We’re not running a race, we are here to have fun, see the scenery and get to know the surroundings. Not just spend two weeks staring at the tar (or dirt/gravel/sand).

David: Yes, just so we can help them decide if a tour is good for them. But even sometimes, it can be difficult. We had one case where a customer rode his motorbike to work every day in London traffic. But when he came on our Alps tour, he wanted to stop the first day. He said he had lost his confidence. So we try to help people know what to expect.
David: Generally speaking, if you can ride safely, competently and confidently, you’ll be ok. We’ll take care of you.
Both of us had each other’s attention. Photo credit: Mike Botan
David: Yes, experience. Our website asks potential customers if they will be comfortable riding 1,200 kilometers (~750 miles) offroad. The Victoria Falls to Capetown is one of the tours where we need to know that people are comfortable riding off road. It’s a difficult one to manage because people have so many definitions of “offroad”. Hana: It’s a difficult one because you can have people who have ridden thousands of miles on gravel and dirt roads, but when you hit sand, it’s completely different. They may not have sand experience which requires completely different skills altogether. So for us, its important to know your skills. Especially because the conditions change year to year. Sometimes the roads can be hard packed gravel and other times very sandy. It’s difficult to tell what the conditions will be beforehand. We definitely tell less experienced people that our dual sport tours may not be for them.

David: Obviously, you need your passport, driver’s license, bike ownership papers and if you are renting, some paperwork showing that you are authorized to take the bike out of the country. When you rent bikes from us, we’ll give you all the appropriate motorbike paperwork. In Europe, there is very little in the way of borders. Only if you leave the EU do you really need any paperwork. If you go to Morocco, you’ll need a permission paper saying you have permission to bring the bike over. The one thing that people still get caught out on is cameras at border crossings. Please, please, please do not have your camera out at a border crossing. No matter how much you want a picture, leave your camera and your phone stowed until you get away from the border. So no matter how good that picture might look in your coffee table book, put your camera away until you leave the border crossing area.
This cape buffalo had my attention as well. Photo credit: Mike Botan
David: Yes, and even other things. I got arrested once in Morocco for having a walkie talkie that I use to communicate with Hana when I’m running sweep. In addition, some countries don’t allow drones. Just make sure that before you bring your drone, that you are allowed to bring one into the country.
David: We’ve talked about this before. I can’t think of one. Let me put it this way, if we don’t like it, we don’t do it. Life’s too short. We’ll try something we like. Hana: Also, I think if we don’t like the tour, how could you expect anyone else to like it. And I love the Victoria Falls to Capetown tour; every time we do it. You know what, you can run one tour one time and there’s always something different. Or something that didn’t happen before. It always remains exciting.
We were watching them, they were watching us. Photo credit: Mike Botan
Hana: We don’t get many unruly riders. They know they are going to ride as a group and they will have to make some compromises to adjust to their fellow riders. If they are not comfortable with that, we also offer them the option to take a GPS and ride by themselves. Then they can meet the group for lunch or at the end of the day at the hotel. So if someone was really incompatible, we always have a spare GPS and we can tell them, “You know what? Why don’t you take the GPS and enjoy yourself and we’ll meet you at the day’s destination.” We’ve never had to do that, but it is an option.
David: Yes we’ve had a few. Like people riding with pillions (passengers) that forget their pillions. This guy left his wife on the ferry and took off with us to Morocco. We also had this one tour to Morocco with only two guys since we were between tours. This particular day we had a few planned river crossings, nothing major, nothing that you needed to train for. Generally, the crossings can be dry or just have enough water to get your rims wet. We’re riding into the high Atlas mountains and it starts raining. When we get to the first crossing the water was just a little deeper. But by the time we got to the third crossing, it was getting a little hairy. But we knew we couldn’t turn around because the water was still rising. There were no hotels, auberges, hostels on the road behind or ahead for many miles. By the time we got to the fourth crossing, it took the four of us pushing the bikes together through the crossing. At this point, the water is over part of the engines. Hana: The water was so deep and fast that we had to hold hands just to get back to bring the other bikes across. It was touch and go and these guys are looking at us thinking, “Wow, this is so exciting!” They thought this was just a normal day. David: So we get through to the next junction and the road is totally washed out. The only way to go was ahead towards an auberge we knew about. The area and road are flooded and there are lorries (trucks) on either side of this road not daring to cross. By this time it was just standing water, and we said, “Shall we?”. So we decided, let’s just go for it. So we just very carefully and at the right speed go through with the 1200 GS. As the bike moves forward, it makes a wake pushing the water out of the way. As long as you go a certain speed the wake kept the water out of the engine. By this time the locals are videoing us. And by the time we all finish, we got a big round of applause from all the truckers and locals for making it across. When we finally got to the auberge, there was no power, only candles, the beds were as hard as nails, and we’re really worried about our customers. We are thinking they are going to hate us. But they have these grins ear to ear and they say, “We love this!” Here we were worried about their experience and they put rave reviews on Tripadvisor about how awesome the trip was.

David: Every company with any significant experience has had crashes. We’ve had our fair share of them and some injuries. Luckily, they have just been broken bones and the like. We’ve had crashes in Serbia which is awkward because a crash is classified as an offense. So if you have a crash, don’t do it on a Saturday, because you’ll have to stay until Monday until a judge decides who was at fault. No matter if you or anyone else is injured or not. If you have caused any damage you’ll have to stay. The moral of the story is don’t crash in Serbia on the weekend. Hana: The minute police or public services get involved you’ll have to stay and you may have to pay a fine.
David: If anyone is injured and there is an ambulance available, we’ll get one to take that person to the nearest hospital. If it’s not a serious injury, they can also go in the support vehicle and we transport them ourselves. We had one case where a person broke his leg badly in the middle of nowhere in Nambia. It was getting dark and the helicopter and plane wouldn’t fly. So we had to transport him in our support vehicle 200 kilometers to Windhoek. He had surgery the following day and a few days later was on the way home.
Near the tip of Africa, you’ll likely find penguins. Photo credit: Mike Botan
Hana: In Europe, it’s easy. As long as you have some sort of international cover you have easy access to care and medical services like ambulances and hospitals. David: But in Africa, we insist that people have their own medical and repatriation insurance. In many parts of Africa, you might have to pay for care first and then get reimbursed from your insurer.
David: We have BMW GS motorcycles. We use three different models, the BMW 1250, 850 and 750 GS models. Hana: I have worked with BMW GSs since the very beginning. They are very dependable and require very little maintenance. They are easy to handle and comfortable to ride.
I made some new friends in Botswana. They were shy at first but we were able to say hello to each other. Photo credit: Mike Botan
David: Yes, we have BMW factory lowered F 750 GSs and a low R 1250 GS. And for all the bikes, we have low seats available. The F 750 GS is fairly low from the factory. But for those that aren’t that tall, the F750GS is a lovely bike to ride with the factory low setup and low seat.
David: That kind of thing is a rarity. In the last 5 years, we’ve had only one breakdown and it was an electrical one caused by a loose wire. But if there is a breakdown, we put the bike in the support vehicle and take it to the nearest garage. If we don’t have a support vehicle (sometimes in very small groups) we get a recovery company to come and pick up the bike and we can usually have it back on the road within 24 hours. Hana: These bikes are really good. It’s not something we’ve come across in our recent history.
Ride leader Hana Ptackova with a very dusty author in Namibia. Photo credit: Kim Botan
Hana: It depends. It depends on why they fell off the bike and how badly the bike is damaged. If they can still ride the bike, they can continue on the same bike. If we think they fell off because lack of skills, then they finish the trip in the support vehicle. We don’t want anyone to get hurt. As they say, if you kill your pony, then you walk. That applies on the bike as well. If you break your bike, I’m sorry you’re not getting a second one. David: We’ve only two people in the last 5 years that have significantly damaged the bike. One in South Africa when BMW was having fork issues and we gave him another bike to ride. The other time was a guy on a brand new bike. I told him to please be careful with this bike and he looked at me and said, “I’m a good rider.” Less than 7 hours later the bike was on the trailer with over $10,000 in damage and totally unrideable. That guy did not get another bike. In a large group, we will bring another bike just as a backup. Or if I’m riding sweep, they can take my bike and I’ll travel in the support vehicle or travel pillion with Hana. Hana: we also have road assistance everywhere in Europe so if there was a breakdown, we’d just call road assistance and we have them pick the bike up and diagnose the problem. Then we can go from there. David: We’ve never had an issue where someone couldn’t finish the ride because of a breakdown.
Hana: Well, you get to a certain level you stay there. Unless you push yourself, you’re not going to get any better. I like to do track days and I enjoy them, but haven’t done some for a while.
In the clay pans of Sossusvlei, Namibia, you can find these ancient trees scorched black by the sun.
David: Some days are longer than others. Because roads and terrain can be very different, the distance is mostly irrelevant. But we plan for a riding time of between 4 – 5 hours per day. We try to leave the destination by 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM and we try to get there by 4:00PM-ish. But don’t worry, we tend to plan the day so that you know you’ve been on a ride. As an example, we had two customers ask us if they could ride the bikes more after we’d reached the destination. They thought some of the planned distances were too short. We said certainly, go ahead. But at the end of the tour, they had never taken the bikes out again after reaching day’s destination.
Hana: One thing that most people don’t know is that you don’t have to be the world’s best rider to run a tour business. Because at the end of the day, we’re not a riding school, training center, or track day specialist. We are here to have people enjoy themselves, see scenery, and ride bikes. Number 1 is that you have to care about people. After that, all you have to be is a safe rider. David: You must make sure that you really care about people. It’s really simple, you need to look after people and make them happy.
Kim and I after riding from Victoria Falls to the Cape of Good Hope. Photo credit: Hana Ptackova
David: Basically, what you are getting is Hana and me. We don’t sublet our business out. If you select a tour with us, Hana will be leading and I will be sweeping. We will be meeting you at the airport and we will be arranging everything. Hana: We always know what’s happening on the tours at all times and we know all our customers personally. And, the customers know us personally. David: So if you look at one of our tours and you have a question, you can call or email us and we can talk you through it. That’s because we are the people booking the hotels, restaurants, organizaing the routes and picking you up at the airport. It’s a very, very personal thing we do. We think that people’s experience with us is so important that we made a decision a few years ago not to grow. We don’t want to be any bigger than we are. There are no ambitions to be a multi-national company with many employees. We want to continue to give that personal touch and be with the customers. We really like the fact that people trust us to take care of them.
Hana: To learn more about the tours we offer, they can go to our website www.motoadventours.com . If they want additional information, they can ask questions through the contact section of our website or send us an email at [email protected] . They can also call me (Hana) via landline at +0034 622 010112 or David at 0034 675 456760 or call us on Skype “Motoadventours”.
