I think they are interchangeable. Both mean that you have been looking forward to going on the trip for a long time.  

Thanks for your help Misterk.  

I wouldn't say that "much anticipated" necessarily means someone has " been looking forward to going on the trip for a long time" - it just means that someone is eagerly awaiting the trip. If I told my family today that we're going to Scotland next week, that would certainly be a much anticipated trip!

Can you tell us the source of the sentence? If you wrote it: If it was anticipated or long awaited, why did it come as a surprise ?  

The original sentence was "The good surprise of this school year was the long awaited trip to London" The students had been waiting for two years to go there.  

To me, the trip could be a surprise, even if it was long awaited. They've known for two years that the trip would happen some time, but it came as a surprise when they heard it would be tomorrow/at the weekend/next Tuesday/or whatever.

Hate Crowded Flights? Here’s How to Avoid the Rush.

Your much-awaited trip abroad is around the corner, and you are bracing yourself for the long, crowded transcontinental flight .

Be it a pandemic scenario , a general health concern, or simply a matter of comfort, a crowded flight is a concern for many travelers around the world. However, if you have to fly, you have to fly. There is not much of a choice there. Neither do you typically have a choice in matters of choosing a seat, like avoiding the middle seat.

There are ways and means, though, by which you can work around the rush for seats and book yourself a seat on a less crowded flight.

Opt For Red Eye Flights

Flights that leave late in the evening until early in the morning are noticeably less crowded. Many don’t prefer to sleep on a flight or wake up too early to rush to the airport. So, you might get an entire row of seats to yourself and enjoy a good night’s sleep aboard the plane. Red eye flights have other advantages too, like faster check-in, cheaper fare, more cabin baggage space, and the opportunity to avoid rush-hour traffic on the roads.

Book Through an Agent

Authorized travel agents use booking software that helps them scan the seating charts, and find out whether a flight is overcrowded or if there’s some breathing space. Accordingly, they can guide you to choose the right flying time. Be prepared to select a flight at odd hours, or one that’s not direct and has a long layover. At least you won’t have to fight for space with other passengers.

Juggle Your Travel Dates

If your itinerary allows for flexibility, then don’t choose to fly during peak seasons. The week of Christmas, Thanksgiving, and school summer vacations are times when flights are bound to be jam-packed. Avoid such dates, and try to select a date in the middle of the week to fly. Usually, flights are less crowded on these days, as compared to weekends.

Avoid Major Airports

While booking your flight, use the “nearby airports” option. Most big cities have several airports nearby, including some smaller ones. If you are flying from or into New York , you might choose Newark instead of JFK or La Guardia. Though, you would need to take a train from Newark into the city, you will still likely have a less crowded flight. If your origin or destination is San Francisco , consider using the Oakland airport instead of San Francisco International Airport for the same reason.

Consult the Airline

Approach the airline directly and find out their peak times. Get to know the suitable days of the week to fly if you are looking to avoid crowded flights. Based on your origin and destination, the airline may be able to suggest to you the best day and time for booking your flight, keeping in mind the crowd factor.

Ask for Upgrade Options

Flying first class will ensure that you have ample elbow room, for sure. Alas, the first-class fares are out of reach for many. That leaves us with no option but to push and shove our way in the economy classes.

However, if you get the opportunity, don’t hesitate to ask for an upgrade of your seating. If it is down to the last minutes before the flight is about to take off and the first class is below capacity, you might find yourself in that coveted space for a much smaller fare difference than usual.

It would be even better if you have accumulated redeemable points or have a slightly flexible budget. If you can get this done, the flight becomes smooth sailing.

Even if you are traveling economy class, try to go for the first row, or the row next to the emergency exits. These provide more legroom and maneuvering space compared to the other seats. If you are booking the tickets through an agent, insist on getting these seats booked, even if it involves paying a slightly higher fare.

Check the Load Factor

You might have to take a connecting flight from a large hub airport. In such a situation, do ask about the load factor of the airline. Load factor is the percentage of occupied seats on the flights that are originating from this hub airport. Opt for the airport where the load factor is low. This means less crowded airports and consequently, less crowded flights.

Select the Airline Carefully

Certain airlines insist on leaving the middle seat vacant, in keeping with social distancing norms. While others are still flying to almost full capacity. Keep this point in mind when you choose the airline. A vacant middle seat gives both the window and aisle-seated passenger sufficient space to sit comfortably without worrying about being too close to another passenger.

Get Travel Insurance

In some cases, flights with fewer passengers can be delayed or cancelled more often than crowded flights. If your scheduled flight is fairly empty, the airline could decide to fit its passengers onto a later flight for logistical reasons. While this saves the airline money, it could cost you. If it results in you arriving late, or having to miss an event you’ve bought tickets for, you could be out the money you’ve already spent. A travel insurance plan can give you a way to be reimbursed for your pre-booked, nonrefundable expenses when travel plans change.

Below you will find our month-by-month guide to this incredible destination which will help you plan your much-awaited trip:

Phuket lies close to the equator so average temperatures don’t vary much, but rainfall varies significantly every month, so this is the main factor to consider when planning your trip.

In terms of rainfall, January is one of the best months to visit the island, as the average expected rainfall is around 35 mm over a just a short five-day period. Also, temperatures do not exceed 32 °C, making the atmosphere dry and warm and therefore suitable for venturing out in Phuket.

January and February have similar average maximum temperatures, with expected highs of 33 °C. However, at 30 mm, the rainfall is considerably lower than the previous month, making February the driest month of the year.

With calm seas, and mostly blue skies, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy their stay without being interrupted by bad weather conditions.

The average maximum temperature increases to 34 °C in March. However, spiking humidity levels mean the weather gets quite hot, which some visitors find uncomfortable and need to rely on air conditioning to survive the heat.

Although March does not see rain often, any rain comes in the form of short bursts, and the humidity is still high. The days are sunny and somewhat suffocating, so not ideal for tourists. 

While April’s temperatures don’t reach more than 34 °C, it is still regarded as one of the hottest and most humid months of the year, and humidity levels continue to increase as the month goes by.

The only difference between March and April is that it rains a lot in April. The average amount of precipitation is 160 mm, which means rain showers are frequent.

But don’t worry, the rain doesn’t last very long, so it is unlikely to ruin your plans. Just remember to carry a light umbrella with you in case of heavy rainfall. 

May’s average daytime temperature remains around the same as that of April, but nighttime temperatures drop to 29 °C.

The rainfall level stays at 350 mm, making the days very hot and the nights very wet and uncomfortable. As the month enters its latter half, the island is hit with the prime of the monsoon season and things seem to get stickier and damper. If you are not a big fan of mosquitoes, then possibly avoid visiting in July. 

The average temperature in June stays at a high of 32 °C, with lows of around 24 °C. Like May, June also sees many days of rainfall.

What differentiates June from the previous months, however, is the fact that visitors must expect short bursts of heavy rainstorms and thunderstorms instead of light frequent showers.

Between the storms, expect nice sunny skies and cool breezes. However, if stormy rain is not your thing, visiting Phuket during June is not advisable. 

July brings increasingly cool winds, making the outside atmosphere rather pleasant and much more comfortable.

Even though both the expected rainfall and the number of rainy days are higher than the previous month, the weather seems to be more bearable because of the winds.

The average maximum temperature lies around 31 °C. Popular activities for this month include swimming and scuba diving. 

The average maximum temperature in August remains at around 31 °C, and the precipitation amount is the same as in July.

However, in August, rainy days are limited to ten days only, making it considerably easier for visitors to plan activities.

The rain falls in short bursts like before and is followed by cooling breezes which make both the inside and outside temperatures very pleasant and enjoyable.

The wettest month of the year brings heavy downpour, thunderstorms, and long periods of rain, stretching up to a whopping 19 days. The average temperature in September stays at 30 °C.

The rain is usually followed by intense periods of humidity, where the air moisture level peaks at approximately 90%, making it very uncomfortable to be in Phuket.

The weather seems suffocating and very difficult for the tourists to bear. Visiting the beach is also not the best idea as September’s strong winds make the waves go higher and higher, claiming a few lives each year.

The island starts to see the departure of the monsoons in October. Nevertheless, expect still to see 310 mm of rainfall in this month.

But since the rain stretches over 23 days, thunderstorms and heavy downpours are not expected. In October, you’re more likely to see light showers followed by sunny and humid conditions.

Beaches remain closed as conditions are still too dangerous; however, it is still possible to go fishing. The average maximum temperature remains at 31 °C.

Even though rail routes to major tourists’ spots are limited, the ‘Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’ runs six color-coded Metro lines through the county. How and what to pack for Iceland in a carry-on? Here’s a detailed list in order to be prepared for both adventures in the wild and city strolls in Reykjavik.

Hello my beautiful friends! Our much-awaited trip to Iceland is still a few weeks away, but since I’m a list-freak and I love packing almost as much as I love traveling, I’m already getting ready with all my Iceland essentials, and I thought I’d share them with you. Since first mentioning our trip to Iceland on my Instagram stories , I’ve been flooded with questions such as “What do I need to pack for Iceland?” ” what to wear in Iceland in April?” “How to pack for Iceland in a carry on?” …so I’m answering to all your questions here :)

We are going to Iceland at the very beginning of April, but as many people will tell you, in Iceland there’s basically 2 seasons: a long Winter and a short Summer. So even though days will be getting longer, temperatures will still be cold and we’ll hopefully still have the chance to catch the Northern Lights ♥

What weather conditions we’re expecting to find in Iceland in April: lots of different weather changes throughout the day – sunny/rainy/snowy/windy with temperatures from -4°C to 7°C (25°F to 44°F). So essentially this “what to wear in Iceland in April” packing checklist is for Winter.

I should also mention: I used to be an over packer. Which, when traveling with only a carry-on, is a big no-no. That’s why I really want to make a precise, essential list this time, not to do the same mistakes over and over again. I hope you’ll find it helpful. What to pack for Iceland: the carry-on

Did I mention I’m only traveling with a carry-on? To be specific, I will have the pleasure of traveling with the amazing, responsibly sourced, innovative Pakt One carry-on #keeptravelsimple

What to pack for Iceland: Layers

Remember that basically all year long, packing for Iceland means packing layers. – So to begin: basic undershirts. I like basic black thermals like the Sivvan Women’s Comfort Long Sleeve T-Shirt/Underscrub Tee  because it goes under anything. – Sweaters for cold weather and comfy sweatshirts or hoodies for lounging around back at the hotel. Bring at least 2. I love this comfy High Neck Heart Print Jumper . It keeps you warm, it fits perfectly under jackets and looks so so lovely in photos ;) – Leggings to layer under your pants/jeans, and for just hanging around back at the hotel. The ones I’ve been wearing non-stop are the Obsidian Black Camo Leggings : it’s the best type of legging I’ve ever had – extra high-waist for maximum tummy control + antimicrobial moisture wicking fabric and quick-drying for comfort and convenience. These are perfect to take on a trip. – Pants/jeans: hiking pants for daytrips and exploring/adventure + your fave jeans for sightseeing in Reykjavik. For your adventures, pants such as Camii Mia Women’s Windproof Waterproof Sportswear Outdoor Hiking Fleece Pants are your best bet, they are both incredibly warm and waterproof. They also look really cute if I may add :)

What to pack for Iceland: Outwear

• – More layers! Start with a packable, warm rain/windproof hiking jacket (that can possibly be worn under another jacket or folded if not used) – pro tip: choose a bright color that will look stunning in your photos, against the glaciers, black beach and cloudy skies ;-) my choice is the Helly Hansen Women’s Lifaloft Hooded Insulator Jacket which is a new technical material, totally cruelty-free and extra warm. Yay! – A weatherproof heavy-duty jacket/parka (preferably with a hood) as an outer layer. I chose this Women’s Down Alternative Quilted Midlength Vestee Puffer Jacket with Fleece Hood for extra warmth. – A casual scarf for city walks and a fleece, warm neck buff for windy/chilly days out in nature. – Two warm hats/beanies (two in case one gets wet) – Two pairs of gloves (better than mittens): a thin and a thicker pair so that they can be layered if needed.

What to pack for Iceland: Footwear

– Warm hiking socks (1 pair per day, and keep one extra pair in your day bag in case your feet get wet). – One pair of slipper socks for lounging back in your hotel room. – Heavy-duty weatherproof hiking boots:  I love the 100% Vegan Adidas outdoor Womens Terrex AX2R Mid GTX for exploring. They are super lightweight, which is great when you’re hiking for a full day; they are waterproof and keep your feet warm and dry. These are my dream hiking boots. Pro tip: make sure you wear your hiking boots before embraking on a trip with them, don’t bring brand new shoes/boots that might give your problems. – Casual but still warm shoes for sightseeing in Reykjavik, going out for dinner or shopping. – Flip flops for going to the hot springs/lagoons (and for the hotel room as well, never ever walk barefoot in carpeted hotel rooms!) – Extra: crampons (you can also buy/rent them locally if you really need them).

What to pack for Iceland: Personal items & accessories

– You will definitely need a swimsuit (or two) if you plan on going to the hot springs. I’m taking this flattering Twist Ruched Low Back One Piece Swimsuit in coral red that, once again, will look stunning in photos at the Blue Lagoon ;) – Also bring with you a small and a bigger quick drying towels. – As many undies as the days you’re staying + 1 & pjs – 2 sports/comfy/soft bras. I’m obsessed with Organic Basics’ Triangle Bra made with GOTS certified organic cotton for the softest feeling, you actually forget you’re wearing it. This triangle bra is a sustainable, ethical choice with the most comfortable and traditional fit. I wear it when hiking, doing yoga or just lounging at home.

– One or two pairs of sunglasses (a polarized, sporty one for adventure days, a more classic one for quiet strolls in Reykjavik) . – Pack your own medicines if you’re currently taking any. – Camera gear, extra batteries, memory cards, gorilla pod, chargers etc. – Maps, guides, books, e-reader, cell phone, earplugs, your travel essentials . – Reusable/refillable water bottle (tap water is ok to drink all over Iceland). – Reusable (bamboo?) cutlery set in order to avoid picking up plastic forks/knives when eating on the go. – Hand-warmers (can also be used as a very discreet warm water bottle for your tummy and as a battery-life saver) – 1 small backpack or messenger bag for sight-seeing / city walks. I will bring my bestie Gootium Canvas Messenger Bag – Vintage Cross Body Shoulder Satchel , that is a compact, durable, vintage-looking amazing bag. I opted for this rather than the usual backpack also to feel/look a little bit less of a tourist when I’ll be café hopping in cool Reykjavik downtown ;-) it has plenty of room to hold my phone, wallet, the refillable water bottle, snacks, scarf + gloves, a city guide, map and my camera. Plus even more space for any mementos and things I’ll be buying while out and about.

Thing is, I seek history whenever I travel, it is pretty essential in helping me understand why the destination I am visiting is what it is today. It helps me understand how places and people change overtime, it teaches me about continuities, it encourages me to gain new insights, and more importantly, it helps me understand and appreciate the cultural values of a place. After all, the future is in the past.

Kanchanaburi is one of those places in Thailand that is steeped in history. It was founded by King Rama I  as a stronghold for likely Burmese intrusions during the 18 th century, and it was moved to its current location during the rule of King Rama III.  Kanchanaburi has a pretty dark past and some of its traces are still evident today.  It is best known for its World War II history and the key tourist spots associated with it, such as the Death Railway, the River Kwai Bridge (made famous by the movie River Kwai Bridge), and the Allied War Cemetery.

Though Kanchanaburi is well-known for its dark  tourism sites, there are more places to see here for everyone, such as the sprawling Erawan National Park that is home to the seven-tiered Erawan Falls, the Instagram-worthy temples of Wat Tham Sua and  Wat Than Kao Noi, the cave temple where Buddhist monks pray and congregate, the Elephants World, the retro city of Mallika that recreates the golden era of Siamese lifestyle during the reign of King Rama V, and the ancient Khmer temples at Mueang Singh Historical Park.  It’s also a relief that Kanchanaburi has kept its relaxed atmosphere despite the crowd it brings. Best time to visit kanchanaburi.

  Kanchanaburi is a year-round tourist destination, but if you’re looking for the best months to visit, I’d recommend November, December, January, and February since the weather is cooler and the place has lesser crowd. Kanchanaburi is relatively humid especially during summer season which falls on March, April, and May, which is also the peak season. Prices of flights and hotels are higher during this season.

  Kanchanaburi like the rest of Thailand uses Thai Baht as currency.  Some tourist establishments may  accept US dollars, best to have Thai baht in handy.  Almost everything is on cash basis, but major hotels and restaurants may accept credit card.  The best rates are the bank’s rate. HOW MANY DAYS TO SPEND IN KANCHANABURI?

  Spending 2 or 3 days should cover the top tourist attractions in Kanchanaburi particularly the World War II destinations.  But if you want to explore other note-worthy attractions, you could spend 4 days, 5 days, or 6 days in Kanchanaburi.  Check-out my detailed Kanchanaburi itinerary below that is good for 3 days, 4 days, 5 days, and 6 days.   Kanchanaburi is pretty safe for tourists, even for solo female travelers. I traveled to Kanchanaburi alone and rented a bike to explore the main town. I never encountered any problems and the locals especially the monks I met inside the cave temple were super helpful and friendly.

BANGKOK TO KANCHANABURI BY TRAIN

Tourists can take the historic train route along the Bangkok Noi-Nam Tok rail line from Thonburi Station, Bangkok to Kanchanaburi train station or River Kwai Bridge. Travel time is roughly 2.5 – 3 hours and Kanchanaburi train fare is approximately ฿100 – ₱159 ($3, SGD 4.46, MYR 13, € 3, AUD 4.79, ₩K 3.8k).  There are 2 scheduled train trips  between Kanchanaburi from Thonburi Station (Bangkok) daily:

BANGKOK TO KANCHANABURI BY BUS

There are buses that run to Kanchanaburi daily from  either the South Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) and the North Bus Terminal (Mo Chit)  in Bangkok. Transit time to Kanchanaburi is roughly  2.5 hours and bus fare starts at  ฿120 – ₱191 ($ 3.75, SGD 5, MYR 16, € 3.44 , AUD 6, ₩K 4.6k)  per person.  You can buy tickets at the bus station or book a ticket online in advance to secure a seat.

Bangkok to kanchanaburi by minivan.

Alternatively, from Victory Monument in Bangkok or from Khao San Road, you can ride a minibus directly to Kanchanaburi. But fare is more expensive. Fare starts at ฿150 – ₱240 ($5, SGD 7, MYR 21, € 4, AUD 7, ₩K 5,833k)  per person and it’ll take about 2.5 hours to reach Kanchanaburi.  These minibus are usually run by local travel agencies.

1.bridge on the river kwai (death railway bridge).

The most popular tourist attraction in Kanchanaburi is the Death Railway Bridge or the Bridge on the River Kwai, which is featured in the Academy Award-winning movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai”. It is part of the Thai-Burma Railway built by coercing hundred thousand British, Dutch, Australians, and Americans soldier prisoners  and Southeast Asian laborers to build the said rail. This was because, after already invading Thailand, the Japanese during the World War II also wanted to invade Burma (Myanmar).  So, they planned to deliver weapons and soldiers to Burma via a railway connecting Thailand and Burma. The said construction led to hundred thousand death, and many of the prisoners of war (POW) are now buried at the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery.

2.JEATHWAR MUSEUM

From the River Kwai Bridge you can walk to the JEATHWar Museum ( J apan, E ngland, A ustralia/USA, T hailand, and H olland War Museum), located in  the grounds of a temple named Wat Chai Chumphon.  The museum displays war relics, letters and artworks from POWs (Prisoners of War), their family members, including interviews of POWs.  Interestingly, one gallery here was designed a bamboo shelter called attap where the prisoners of war lived during the war.  Beside the JEATHWar Museum is a majestic Buddhist Temple that houses stunning wall paintings.

3.CHUI KAI WAR CEMETERY

Chui Kai War Cemetery is the exact site of the Allied prisoner-of-war camp during the World War II, located about 3 km south of the River Kwai Bridge  at the bank of Kwai Noi River. During the World War II, prisoners even built their hospital and church nearby. This beautifully-manicured cemetery houses the graves of 1,400 Commonwealth soldiers and 300 Dutch soldiers. I cycled here during my trip to Kanchanaburi because it’s quite easy to reach from my guesthouse. The place though peaceful and full of greenery and flowers now, still evokes a disheartening atmosphere because of its tragic history.

• How to get to the Chui Kai War Cemetery:  Rent a bicycle from your guesthouse/hotel and cycle to the Chui Kai War Cemetery. It is roughly 3 km south of the River Kwai Bridge. Alternatively, you may hire a tuk-tuk to take you there for about ฿40 – ₱64 ($ 1.25,SGD 1.78, MYR 5.46, € 1.15, AUD 1.91, ₩1,555).

4.KAOPOON CAVE TEMPLE

Kanchanaburi has some of the most stunning temples I’ve seen in Thailand, and interestingly, it is home to a handful of cave temples. I originally planned to visit Kaopoon Cave Temple that is said to have been visited by King Rama V (King Churalongorn the Great) via waterway. Today, several boats in Kanchanaburi near the River Kwai Bridge can be rented to get here. I cycled to this place from my hotel near the River Kwai, and unfortunately, I didn’t have enough information at that time of my visit. I thought upon entering the first cave temple, I was already at Kaopoon Cave Temple. Turns out, I only entered the Phra Mae Guan Im Pho Thi Sat Chao shrine, the first shrine with a large Buddha sitting on a summit of a hill overlooking a scenic river, which is pretty popular among locals, as they usually come here to pray. Despite not reaching Kapoon Caves, I enjoyed my visit at Phra Mae Guan Im Pho Thi Sat Chao because a helpful Buddhist monk toured me around the place. I met his other Buddhist  friends as well and we had a quick chat and photo op.  If your keen to reach the Kaopoon Caves, there’s a wagon for roughly THB50 per person that can take you farther to Kaopoon Cave Temple, about 2,000 meters farther.

5.ERAWAN NATIONAL PARK

Initially, Erawan National Park was the reason why I was drawn to Kanchanaburi, I wanted to see the famed tourist spot here – the 7-tiered Erawan Falls, located inside the confines of the Erawan National Park on Tenassirim Hills.  Erawan Waterfalls boasts of 7 levels of falls, which thankfully, are quite manageable to reach.  The 1st level of Erawan Falls called Hlai Khuen Rung, is usually jampacked with local tourists since this is the perfect spot for picnic.  Visitors can have lunch or snack here as there are food stalls nearby.  The 1 st level waterfall in Erawan Falls has pleasing, sapphire-colored water that flows into the pool with little fishes that can nibble your feet’s dead skin like those found on fish spa.   Wang Macha, the 2 nd level of Erawan Waterfalls also has an arctic-colored water bucketing into natural pools and rock formations.  This is a good place for swimming as the water here is refreshing and there are comfort rooms, shower rooms, and changing rooms. The 3 rd level of Erawan Falls called Pha Namtok plummets into a huge natural pool surrounded by trees and plants. The 4 th level of Erawan Falls called Oke Nang Peesu is another crowd-pleaser because of its natural waterpark, where visitors can slide and bathe. Buea Mai Long , the 5 th level of Erawan Falls is another Instagram-worthy tourist spot in Kanchanaburi with teal-colored water pouring into travertine pools. The 6 th level of Erawan Waterfalls called Dong Prucsa is worth visiting despite its distance from the other waterfalls in the area. It  tumbles down colossal rock formations before plunging into the  natural pool.  Meanwhile, the Phu Pha Erawan is the 7 th level of Erawan Waterfalls is shaped like “erawan” – the 3-tiered white elephant in the Hindu mythology.

6.WAT THAM SUA and WAT THAN KAO NOI

  Kanchanaburi is sprinkled with jaw-dropping temples, and my personal favorites are Wat Tham Sua (Thai-styled temple) and Wat Than Kao Noi (Chinese-inspired temple) because of their intricate design and scenic surroundings. The temples are proudly standing on top of a limestone hill near the Mae Khlong River.

After entering the temple gates, I took an old-looking cable car going up the temple for ฿20 – ₱32 ($0.63, SGD 0.89, MYR 2.73, € 0.57, AUD 0.96, ₩K 777).  You can also opt to climb for free the 157 steps stairs.  The giant golden Buddha made of golden mosaics and surrounded by stupas greets the visitors here.  The largest stupa here houses murals that are mostly about the war with Burma and the Buddha images in different postures.  During my trip to Wat Tham Sua and Wat Than Kao Noi in Kanchanaburi, there was no crowd, except for some locals and monks sporting their orange robes happily taking photos at the temple.

Wat Tham Suea (also Wat Tham Sua) is said to be called Tiger Temple because there’s a cavern here where tigers used to live, but now, only a small tiger shrine can be seen inside the cave.  Adjacent to Wat Tham Suea is the equally charming temple named What Than Kao Noi reminiscent of Chinese temples.  Wat Than Kao Noi is a Buddhist temple flanked with intricate tiled Buddha images, bells, and Buddha statues.  Climbing this temple offers the best view of  Wat Tham Suea and the surrounding farmland.

•   How to get to Wat Tham Sua:  There are group tours in Kanchanaburi that includes a visit to Wat Tham Sua and Wat Than Kao Noi. Alternatively, if you want a DIY Travel here, from Kanchanaburi, you can take a bus to Ratchaburi. Alight at the bus stop fronting Tha Mueang Hospital. From there, you can hire a motor taxi to take you to Wat Tham Sua.  Or you can hire a tuk-tuk to take you to Wat Tham Sua from downtown Kanchanaburi.

7.ELEPHANTS WORLD KANCHANABURI

From an estimated 100,000  elephants in Thailand in the 19 th century, there are only about 3,000 domestic and 2,000 elephants in the wild now, according to Elephants World Kanchanburi .  The elephants in Thailand were used to carry logs for the logging industry back in the days. But after a devastating flood in 1989, logging activity was totally banned by the government to prevent further deforestation.  Since then,  the elephant owners needed to find other ways to finance the food and upkeep of the elephant.

The Elephants World Kanchanaburi is a brainchild of veterinarian Dr.Samart and his wife Khun Fon. It started as a small home for the injured and elderly elephants in Kanchanaburi province. Later on, they started a fund-raising activity for the upkeep the said elephants and finally decided to switch the conservation program to an eco-tourism activity so they can self- finance the growing community of domestic elephants, mahouts, and staff.  Nowadays, the Elephants World provides home to over 30 domestic elephants. They offer 3 kinds of programs – the Day Program, the Overnight Program, and the Forest Program so visitors can experience up-close and personal encounters with these elephants.

8.MALLIKA KANCHANABURI

The massive Mallika City in Kanchanaburi is a retro-city of the former Siamese lifestyle in the Chao Phraya River basin. Mallika City remakes the Golden Age era in Thailand during the reign of King Chulalungkorn (Rama V) from 1873 to1910 A.D., best known for abolishing slavery in Thailand.  At Mallika City, tourists can rent and wear Thai traditional clothes as they tour around,  But first, every visitor has to change their Thai Baht to ancient money called Satang at the ticket office, which can be used to buy food, drinks and handmade local crafts at Mallika village.

Some of the most famous Mallika City tourist spots includes (1.) Saphan Han , the bridge that can be moved to allow boats to pass through and believed to be King Rama’s favorite bridge, the (2.) City Tower , originally a  prison tower but now used as an observation deck of Mallika City, (3.) the Ancient Market Zone   (Prange Nara, Prange Phuthorn, and Prange Sappasart neighborhood) where various ancients products are on display such as candles, perfumes, dessert, etc. and visitors are highly encouraged to participate in making these products (4.) Thai traditional houses and structures like Reuan Diew – the house for commoner,  Reuan Khaha Bodi – the house for the rich and ruling class, Reun Pae Floating House – shophouse or café by the river banks, and Reuan Hmoo – used by the rich people as a visitor reception area, this is where tourists can watch Thai traditional dance and show during dinner, (5.) Jasmine Garden – a garden sprinkled with various kinds of jasmine plants, which inspired the named Mallika.

• How to get to Mallika City by public transport: To get to Mallika City by public bus, from Kanchanaburi Bus Station, a bus to Sangkhlaburi and tell the driver you are getting off at Mallika City.  Fare is roughly ฿80 – ₱130 and travel time is about 3 hours. Buses run daily every 40 to 50 minutes from 07:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

9.PRASAT MUANG SINGH HISTORICAL PARK

When the Khmers abandoned Kanchanaburi, they left behind Several Bayon-style temples (similar to the temples in Cambodia ) are sprinkled around the western side of Sai Yok District.  These temples where abandoned by the Khmers who constructed the said structures during the rule of King Jayavarman during the Khmer Empire era.  Some of these temples can now be visited by tourists traveling to Kanchanaburi at the stunning Mueang Singh Historical Park , surrounded by verdant forest and crowned by the main shrine – Prasat Muang Singh Temple, proudly standing at the heart of the domain.  The ancient Buddhist temples at  Mueang Singh are made of laterite, which explains their orange color. Apart from religious reasons, it is believed that these Buddhist temples were built to serve as a military post and transit of trade along the Mae Nam Khwae Noi.  While you are at it, don’t miss the prehistoric burial site with pottery, jewelry, and 2 human skeletons on display, which is said to date back 2,000 years ago before Mueang Singh was founded.

How to get to the Muang Sing Historical Park: Take a train ( ordinary train #257 or #259) from Kanchanburi to Tha Kilen or Nam Tok Sa Yok Noi. Get off at Tha Kilen Station , travel time is about 1 hour.  Then at Kilen Station, take a tuktuk to Mueang Singh Historical Park. The train departs around 10:35 AM and 4:26 PM. The train going back to Kanchanaburi leaves at 6:14 AM and 1:54 PM. Make sure not to miss the last trip going back to Kanchanaburi at 1:54 PM, be at the station at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure.  If you miss it, your next option is to take a taxi to Kanchanaburi. Foreigners are typically charged a higher fare of ฿100 – ₱159 ($3, SGD 4.46, MYR 13, € 3, AUD 4.79, ₩K 3.8k) per person one-way.

Welcome to this guide that looks at what to wear in Venice in every season and what else to pack for a short weekend in the city of water.

As the departure day gets closer to that much-awaited trip to Venice, you’re not 100% sure what to pack . You’ll be pleased to know you’re not the only one!

Summers in Venice are pretty hot and humid, winters are cold and during the shoulder seasons the weather is constantly changing.

Also know that from November to February, there’s a chance of finding ‘acqua alta’ (high tide) and if you visit churches , you’ll need to follow the dress code rules .

Before this all gets too overwhelming too quickly, let’s get into this step by step guide so you can begin to understand exactly what to pack for Venice.

What to wear in Venice?

Quick Answer: It depends! What you need to wear to be comfortable in Venice will depend on the time of the year that you travel and the activities you plan to do.

Get a rough idea on what to wear in Venice and when below:

• Venice in summer: summers are hot and humid so I recommend wearing breathable clothing that doesn’t make you sweat. Ideally 100 % cotton, cool summer dresses, comfortable sandals or sneakers, sunglasses and a hat to protect you from the sun.
• Venice in autumn and spring: during the shoulder seasons temperatures vary a lot depending on the month you’re travelling to Venice, but they usually go over 15 °C. For this reason, dress in layers, carry a rain jacket or light jacket and a small umbrella.
• Venice in winter: winters in Venice are cold. Wear woollen clothing, a heavy coat and warm sweaters or jumpers. Wear waterproof shoes or boots, a hat, scarf and gloves.

Keep reading below, not only to better understand what to wear while you’re here, but to learn what things to pack to ensure you have everything you need for your trip. That way, you can concentrate on seeing the best sights in Venice instead.

One question my readers ask is…

Does Venice have a dress code?

The quick answer is: No, it doesn’t. You can almost wear whatever you like (within reason, of course). The only ‘unspoken rule’ in Venice, but also all around Italy in general really, is to not wear beachwear while walking around the city centre.

So… just remember not to wear a bikini top or swimming trunks (with no-shirt on) around the streets of Venice, or other islands of the lagoon, if you do visit them.

If you’re planning to visit churches in Venice , respect the religious nature of the building and dress code rules normally displayed at the entrance.

In general, adults and teenagers shouldn’t wear:

• Sleeveless tops
• Short skirts
• See-through tops

Basically everything that’s too revealing should be avoided, even if some churches are less strict than others, where they check how you’re dressed at the entrance (like to access the St. Mark’s Basilica).

When it’s hot in Venice, you can wear linen trousers , t-shirts, below-knee or knee-length skirts and a pashmina to cover your shoulders. Although it may seem like a good idea, I don’t suggest wearing flip flops while in the historic centre.

They are also not suitable for walking around the city for hours. For the evenings in Venice , its fine to wear a pair of sneakers, even inside the restaurants and bars.

If you have the chance though, opt for smart casual style and only wear elegant clothes, shoes or heels if going to a very fancy location such as a rooftop bar at one of the many beautiful 5 star hotels in Venice (there are many across the city).

What do tourists wear in Venice?

Most tourists are aware of the amount of walking that gets done in Venice and dress accordingly. One thing you will see tourists wearing is usually comfortable shoes .

It could be a pair of trendy sneakers that are perfect all year round , women also tend to wear boots during winter and sandals during the summer months.

If you’re unsure of how comfy your shoes will be, I suggest you carry some blister plasters that you can quickly stick on your heel if you start to experience any pain.

In the summer, women wear long dresses or a top or t-shirt with skirts and shorts , and men normally wear long trousers or men’s shorts and a t-shirt .

For the cool summer evenings, a cardigan or denim jacket are the must-haves for when temperatures drop down. In the winter, you can see tourists and locals alike wearing warm coats and wool clothing to face the cold and humid days.

For spring and autumn, a light rain jacket like this one is a life saver in Venice as rainy days are expected. Wearing layers of cotton clothes is perfect to face the sudden change of temperatures from one day to the next or during the same day.

For good quality shoes (Made in Italy), jackets and coats, I normally buy from Geox which is by far one of the best brands for style without compromising comfort.

For the shoulder seasons, my recommended way to get dressed is with:

• Cotton vest

As temperatures increase, you can easily remove a piece of clothing and place it inside your backpack. To store all the daily essentials, this backpack is great to carry some snacks, a small umbrella, a refillable bottle, and other personal items.

💡 Smart travel tip: If you do buy a new pair of shoes to wear especially for your trip to Venice, I advise that you wear them a couple of times before you arrive. Test how much they can support your feet for long periods and get used to them.

Things to pack for Venice

Aside from knowing what to wear in Venice there will be some extra things that you will want to carry with you some of which may depend on the season you travel.

Here’s a checklist of essentials that I suggest you carry to Venice:

• Travel document wallet
• Travel pillow
• Reusable water bottle
• Anti-theft proof bag
• Comfortable shoes
• Mosquito repellant (This is the brand that I like to use.)
• Blister plasters
• Rubber boots (for late autumn/winter/spring when there’s a chance of encountering high water)

With the above you should be able to travel well. Not all of the items on this list are completely necessary (i.e mosquito repellant in winter) but you may want to invest in these items to make your trip to Venice (and future trips) much more comfortable.

What to wear in Venice by season

It is useful to plan ahead of time and prepare for the weather ahead. That is why in this guide I thought it would be a good idea to look at the seasons in Venice.

Below I will give you tips on what to expect so that way you can understand what will be suitable for each particular month or season that you visit Venice.

What to wear in Venice in Spring?

In spring temperatures and weather conditions change considerably. In Venice in March , temperatures are milder than the previous month but still cold .

Temperatures range between 8°C and 14°C and you can expect some rainy days . The chance of high water is lower than the winter but possible. To prepare for travel in early spring carry: a warm jacket or a light coat and get dressed in layers .

I also recommend that you carry a compact travel umbrella along with you so you won’t be caught off guard by the rain and some comfortable sneakers or boots .

For a pair of stylish sneakers that are ideal for (very) long walks but also perfect to wear for your nights out in Venice, be sure to check out these Geox for men or these Geox for women which are both offer high standards when it comes to comfort.

For late spring (end of April, May and till mid June), as temperatures increase, you can leave at home warm woollen jumpers and hoodies, and just carry long dresses, t-shirts and tops, cardigans and light jackets .

Temperatures range between 15 °C and 25 °C , so again, get ready to remove (or replace) layers throughout the day. From April onwards, I suggest not wearing boots but just sneakers and comfortable sandals that can support your feet well.

Late spring is the perfect time to go on day trips from Venice , so carry with you your sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes from the sun.

What to wear in Venice in Summer?

Summer in Venice is hot and temperatures go above 30 °C in July and August . That said, Venice is an elegant city and it hurts public morality seeing tourists wearing bras and bikinis or swim trunks.

Women can simply wear light cotton dresses with sandals or platform shoes , if you like wearing heels. I don’t recommend wearing heels during the day as you’ll walk a lot, but keep them for the evenings. Alternatively, you can wear breathable t-shirts and shorts or a top and shorts .

The shorts can’t be too short , and if you wear a sleeveless top, carry with you a pashmina so you can cover your shoulders whilst visiting churches.

The pashmina is also perfect to have when you go to museums, shops and restaurants where the air-con is on, so you can cover your shoulders and neck.

Men can wear shorts just above the knee and a t-shirt or polo . No tank tops, and don’t go around the streets without a shirt.

Don’t wear flip flops in Venice historic centre, instead wear sandals or canvas sneakers that way you will reduce the risk of having a fall or a toe injury.

If you plan to visit Lido, Jesolo or other beaches near Venice , I suggest that you carry a swimsuit, a good sunscreen and some UV sunglasses for eye protection.

What to wear in Venice in Winter?

In winter, temperatures in Venice rarely drop below zero but the cold can be intense , sometimes humid too. For many this can be a shock to the system.

To get you prepared to walk around the city, travel by gondola or vaporetto (even on the coldest days), below I will recommend exactly what to wear in Venice in winter.

Women can either wear normal trousers and under them some thick tights or thermal leggings . Your coat should be puffy, warm and comfortable , so you can layer up on woollen sweaters, warm cotton pullovers , and scarves.

Make sure to wear comfortable waterproof shoes or boots as it can rain and eventually as you walk for hours around, if you’re not protected enough get all your feet wet (which is always quite annoying when it happens).

In winter there’s a chance of finding the famous ‘acqua alta’ (high tide), so remember to carry some rubber boots or fully waterproof boots with you! Or, you even get some while you are in Venice since many shops sell the disposable kind.

You can check the forecast in Venice by looking at the Centro Previsioni e Segnalazioni Maree website on the days leading up to your trip. Finally, don’t forget to carry some woollen gloves, a scarf and a hat for those most rigid winter days.

What to wear in Venice in Autumn?

Temperatures in Venice in autumn are fluctuating and range between 10 °C and 24 °C . In your luggage, you can put some warm cotton clothes, mid-season cardigans and jumpers .

As for the spring, get dressed in layers so you can easily take some clothes off and wear them back as the cold is felt. From October, high water returns in Venice, and that’s because of the tidal cycle of the Adriatic Sea.

Carry with you some rubber boots if high tide is expected for the days of your visit. Early autumn, temperatures are pleasant and for example, Venice in September is one of the best months to be around as there’s an average temperature of 21 °C.

You can still wear t-shirts and dresses like in the summer, but it might get a bit cooler so long trousers instead of shorts are better. Carry with you a jumper or cardigan and jacket for when it’s cooler in the morning and at night time.

As rainy days get more frequent, you can have your rain jacket (or jacket for the evenings) and a travel umbrella . From mid October and November, temperatures can drop below 10 °C, so warm cotton and woollen sweaters are must haves.

Here are questions people ask when to comes to knowing what to wear in Venice:

Can you wear trainers in Venice?

Yes, you can wear trainers. Wear comfortable walking shoes as you’ll do a lot of walking around Venice. The shoes should support your feet very well and don’t rub your heels . If you’re travelling in late autumn or winter, make sure they’re waterproof too. It’s not advisable to wear trainers to go to fancy restaurants or other elegant locations. Instead put smart casual sneakers, heels or nice sandals.

What do you wear on a gondola ride in Venice?

For a gondola ride there’s no particular attire to respect . I recommend wearing comfortable clothes, like loose fitting trousers so you can easily get in and out the boat. Dresses are completely fine but make sure you feel comfortable with them. If you’re going on a gondola ride in the summer, wear sunglasses and a hat to protect you from the sun. In the winter, put on some warm woollen clothes as it might feel like it’s even colder as you’re closer to the water .

What to wear at night in Venice?

Nights in Venice are mild in the summer and you can feel the sea breeze. They are very cold in winter, and during spring and autumn can vary a lot based on the month. Wear a warm coat and woollen clothes in the winter , dresses, t-shirts and skirts or trousers in the summer, and layers in spring and autumn with a warm jacket or rain jacket.

Packing luggage for a much-awaited trip to France can be very challenging. Going to one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, known as the “capital of romance and fashion,” is an exciting experience. The best way to truly enjoy this exhilarating experience of interning abroad , is to prepare properly; if being unprepared for a job in your home country is bad, then being unprepared in a foreign country is an absolute disaster.

Important Personal Documents

Be sure to check pertinent documents necessary for travel such as a visa, passport, airline tickets, and hotel confirmation. Make copies of all important documents, they will come in handy should any unlucky incidents, like losing a passport, happen. If important documents are not needed while going from place to place, keep them in a safe place. Always check your documents to make sure that everything is intact.

Walking Shoes

In France, the main means of getting around is walking. People walk to shops, look for restaurants, to work or school, and to visit local attractions. So, having comfortable footwear is probably one of the best investments one can make when it comes to luggage weight. Bring high-quality shoes that can support your feet. It is best to refrain from using tennis or sports shoes if you want to stay fashionable, however comfort is often more important in the long run. At least one pair of stylish shoes, sandals, or dress shoes are probably worth bringing too, just not as essential. 

Proper Clothing

When choosing what to wear in France, think comfort and style. France does have certain rules about appropriate clothing etiquette, but they pretty much always include dressing smart, neatly, and fashionably. Black is always an appropriate color for clothing in France. French people have a thing for scarves, sunglasses, and headbands, so bring one of each. Adding a scarf or headband to one’s wardrobe also adds class and elegance, along with a few dresses. You never know it may come in handy, especially because some shops and restaurants actually require their female customers to wear dresses. Again pack as little as possible. This will leave space in your luggage for the new dress or shirt that you are bound to purchase at some point during your stay in France.     

Rainwear/Waterproof Gear

Even if you have already researched and the weather channels say that it will not rain in France, always be ready. Expect the unexpected! Short rain showers are very common in France, especially in the afternoons. Bring a raincoat and even small umbrella. You do not want to lie in the hotel bed, feeling under the weather because you got caught in a rainstorm, when you should be exploring.

Personal Essentials

Packing toiletries can be a bit tricky since most airline companies regulate the amount of liquids allowed for carry-ons, but prices for items such as shampoo, toothpaste, and soap are usually expensive in France. So pack what you can in small little bottles before you leave, and by the time you need more you will have hopefully found the right place to get a decent price and product. Don’t forget to ask the airline company about baggage allowances and inclusions to avoid dealing with problems while at the airport. If you have medications, supplements, and vitamins, do not forget to pack them because they may not be easy to acquire once you arrive, especially prescriptions. Also don’t forget a universal adapter and travel charger should a charging need arise. As always on any trip away from home or to a new place, do not forget a camera to document all your new experiences!

US House approves long-awaited aid package to bolster Ukraine's war efforts

After stalling for months, a long-awaited aid package to support Ukraine's ongoing war efforts has finally passed the United States House of Representatives. 

It includes more than $US60 billion ($94 billion) in aid for Ukraine, as it struggles to fight off a two-year Russian invasion. 

Aid for Israel and US allies in the Indo-Pacific including Taiwan, has also been approved. 

Ukraine has long called for more support, saying it's  running out of air defence systems.

But the bill had been stuck for months. 

The House is controlled by Republicans, who refused to approve more foreign aid unless a deal was struck on border security. 

Some Republicans were also concerned about rising national debt.

In a rare move, Republican Speaker Mike Johnson relied on Democrat votes to get the bill through, as he went forward with the vote despite pushback from his colleagues.

The aid for Ukraine, Israel and allies in the Indo-Pacific was separated into three separate bills, and packaged with a fourth relating to a potential ban of Chinese-owned social media app TikTok . 

Mr Johnson said it was important the US met its international obligations.

"It's not the perfect legislation, it's not the legislation we would write if Republicans were in charge of both the House, the Senate, and the White House," he said.

"This is the best possible product that we can get under these circumstances."

Since pressing forward with the vote, some Republicans have threatened to oust Mr Johnson, who has only been House speaker since October .

But Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has voiced support for the speaker and Ukraine's war efforts.

The $US90 billion package also includes $US23 billion to replenish US weapons, stocks and facilities, $US26 billion for Israel including $US9.1 billion for humanitarian needs, and $US8.12 billion for the Indo-Pacific.

The legislative package will now go to the Senate, where the Democrats have a majority. 

Democrat Senate Leader Chuck Schumer had told senators to be ready to work over the weekend, in anticipation of the bill passing the House.

Bullpen comes to the rescue as Dodgers open trip with win over Nationals

After weeks of worrisome late-game blunders, there finally was redemption for the Dodgers bullpen Tuesday night.

On a night their starting pitcher failed to complete five innings, and their lineup managed only one run before the final couple of frames, it was five other numbers that keyed a 4-1 Dodgers win over Washington at Nationals Park.

As in, the five goose eggs the Dodgers’ once-struggling bullpen put on the scoreboard.

“The bullpen,” manager Dave Roberts said, “was really good tonight.”

Entering the night, the unit had been anything but lately, emerging as one of the biggest concerns during the Dodgers’ underwhelming 13-11 start to the season.

The group was without injured right-handers Brusdar Graterol and Blake Treinen (the latter will begin a rehab assignment this week). It had compiled a 4.35 ERA through the opening month, the 10th-worst mark in the majors. And it had been a common culprit during a 3-6 homestand last week.

But Tuesday against the rebuilding Nationals, relievers Michael Grove, Alex Vesia, Daniel Hudson and Evan Phillips helped the Dodgers overcome an early offensive lull, then hang on to a narrow lead late, combining for 4-1/3 scoreless innings in a victorious start to a nine-game trip.

“We’re always gonna be ready to go down there,” Phillips said.

While starter James Paxton surrendered just one run in his fourth start, the veteran left-hander again struggled with his command. He walked three batters (he has 17 this season) and struck out just one, forcing Roberts to replace him with one out in the fifth after 89 laborious pitches.

On the other side of the plate, the Dodgers’ lineup was kept silent by the Nationals’ own left-handed veteran, Patrick Corbin.

Last year Corbin’s 5.20 ERA was third worst in the majors among qualified starters. This season his 8.06 mark entering Tuesday ranked dead last, after he gave up five runs in 6⅓ innings at Dodger Stadium last week.

In his rematch against the Dodgers, though, the 34-year-old looked like his former All-Star self. He spun 5⅓ shutout innings. He walked three batters but gave up just three hits while collecting three strikeouts.

It was only once Corbin left the game that the Dodgers finally found life. Later in the sixth, they manufactured a two-out rally that culminated with Kiké Hernández’s tying single. In the eighth, James Outman put the Dodgers in front with an RBI double and Miguel Rojas singled him home. Then, in the ninth, Shohei Ohtani supplied an exclamation point with his sixth home run, clobbering a 450-foot, second-deck blast that exploded off his bat at 118.7 mph.

“It looks like a cruise missile,” Outman said. “That was absurd.”

Underpinning the entire performance was the bullpen.

Grove stranded the two runners he inherited from Paxton in the fifth, then got two outs — with a walk in between — in the sixth.

Vesia took over from there, stranding Grove’s runner with a deep flyout before returning to the mound for a scoreless seventh.

And once the Dodgers took the lead in the eighth — a rally that started with a single and steal from Teoscar Hernández — Roberts’ late-game decisions were easy.

It wasn’t even close: Most fans believe in Dave Roberts and want him to remain manager of the Dodgers.

Hudson, the former Nationals closer who has returned from two injury-plagued seasons to become the Dodgers’ set-up man, worked around a two-out walk in the eighth to lower his ERA to 2.45.

Phillips had a more adventurous appearance in the ninth, loading the bases on three walks and a single — the Nationals ran into one out on the bases — before ultimately surviving with his sixth save and a sub-1.00 ERA.

“Fortunately,” a relieved Phillips said, “I was able to finish it out today.”

Indeed, and as he and the Dodgers celebrated in the handshake line, it was the bullpen at last that deserved the credit — and not the blame — in a close, low-scoring contest that wasn’t decided until the final innings.

‘They just wanted their moms:’ Mother survived deadly Hays bus crash, recounts tragic day

Victoria Limon stood next to the idling school bus after three hours of chaperoning a long-awaited field trip. She pulled her phone from her pocket at 1:36 p.m. and texted her co-workers.

On the bus, driving off.

The special education aide at Tom Green Elementary in Buda had helped gather the group of more than 40 children into a single-file line, including her 5-year-old daughter. She guided them to their green vinyl seats before settling into hers, two rows behind the driver.

She and 54 other teachers and pre-kindergarten students on the bus then eased from the Capital of Texas Zoo parking lot on their 40-minute return trip to campus.

As the bus turned started chugging down the busy Texas Highway 21, Limon and several teachers traded cell phone photos, whispering as many children drifted to sleep.

About five minutes later, another staff member told the 43-year-old mother of five that her daughter, Diana, also had dozed off. Limon glanced to see Diana’s head hanging into the aisle and that she was squeezing out her young seatmate. Limon traded seats with the other girl, placing Diana’s head in her lap as the bus rumbled on.

Twenty-five minutes into the trip, as the bus steamed west in a single lane with a 65 mile-per-hour speed limit, a parade of eastbound cars whisked past them with no lane between.

Limon had left her backpack and cell phone in the seat she had been sitting in, so she stared out the window at the passing cars. Then, as her heart jumped into her throat, she saw the 33-ton concrete truck barreling down the highway, veering from his lane into theirs.

Limon heard the sound of twisting metal and felt the crush of a violent impact. She realized she and the bus were being hurtled onto their right sides, spinning counterclockwise as the bus screeched off the highway.

Her survival and maternal instincts kicked in instantly as they came to a rest upright, but leaning, down an embankment. She saw some of the children, including Diana, tossed into a pile, many of them crying and bloody.

She is the first passenger from the bus to publicly speak, and the aftermath of the trauma pierces through any normal conversation. Limon cheerfully answers the door to her home, offers guests water or a soft drink and a place to sit. 

Then, she starts talking about that day. Her body tenses and her hands shake slightly. Her husband, Eddie, stands feet away, reminding her that she’s OK. Diana was at school.

Limon is among multiple families who have brought lawsuits stemming from the crash against the driver of the truck and his employer. Accounts such as Limon’s will likely be critical evidence as the cases move through the courts in coming months.

Limon divides her life before the crash – and after. But Tom Green Elementary has been – and will always be – an anchor for her family, she says. Three of her five children attended there.

The community around the campus is close-knit and family-focused. Four neighborhoods of single-family homes surround the 850-student school of majority Hispanic children. The school, built in 1985, is named for a Hays County agriculture teacher. Because of the closeness to campus, most children instead walk or are driven by parents a short distance.

For some, a first-time bus ride that day added to the sense of adventure.

Limon left a job she had for a decade working as a financial analyst to spend more time with her children, who range in age from 24 to a 1-year-old, and started working as a Tom Green substitute teacher in January 2021. It turned into full-time staff position in a special education class soon thereafter. Limon instantly knew she was in the right place, doing the right thing.

“I love the school,” Limon says. “I love the teachers, my classroom, and my students. I love my job.”

Six hours before the crash, Limon stood in the kitchen of her family’s two-story home putting the final touches on sack-lunches – an H-E-B lunchable with raspberry flavored water for Diana and a chef salad and turkey sandwich for herself. Her daughter bounded down the tan-carpeted stairs beaming with a Christmas morning-like joy.

“I am so excited!” Diana exclaimed.

The day had been weeks in the works with growing excitement as teachers made sure the parents of each child signed a permission slip and knew to send lunches. 

As they packed the yellow 2011 model International bus – each child wearing special-ordered $7 green tie-dye shirts with the school’s name and yellow lanyards with name tags –  the ride was filled with a cacophony of children's chatter.

Once they pulled into the zoo’s parking lot around 10 a.m., many parents who had carpooled were already there waiting. The zookeeper gave them maps of the exhibits, and the children squealed as he did a one-man show with an otter. They petted goats and reptiles. Limon snapped a picture of a handler draping a boa constrictor around her daughter’s neck as Diana sheepishly grinned.

About an hour into the trip, students and chaperones sat at picnic tables for lunch and began winding down the tour shortly before 1 p.m. – nap time for many of the children.

In the seconds immediately after the crash, Limon took only a second to absorb the shock. 

Even though they had been in the same seat, Diana now appeared tossed into a different row. Limon could see and hear her crying – relieved to know that she was not badly hurt.

In what seemed like only a few moments, bystanders showed up to the bus and started rescuing passengers through doors and windows. 

Limon remembers helping lift some of the children, including Diana, to the strangers before they pulled her out of the same window. 

She saw a bloody fellow staff member laying on her side, but didn’t recognize her because she was so badly injured. 

She also saw a bystander carrying a limp boy, covered in what seemed like a white T-shirt or towel.

Once on the side of the sun-drenched road, Limon gathered with the children around her, including Diana. Some asked if she had any Band-Aids.

“They just wanted their moms,” she says.

Paramedics divided them into groups based on the seriousness of their injuries and the need to go to the hospital.

Limon and Diana were among those to get loaded into an ambulance. Once at the hospital, she and other staff began piecing together information that someone – they didn’t know if it was a staff member or student – died.

She later realized that the boy she saw being carried by the bystander was 5-year-old Ulises Rodriguez Montoya, who died at the scene. 

Limon cried on the emergency room gurney. She had no broken bones, only a broken heart. 

“I can’t imagine what that mom is going through,” she said. “I just can’t imagine. It makes you thankful to have them, and it makes you think about all the times you take for granted, that they are going to come running down the stairs.”

The crash also killed University of Texas doctoral student Ryan Wallace, who was traveling in a separate car on his late lunch break to pick up his two nephews at another school for a Friday night family night.

Today, Limon is still in pain. 

Glass slashed her left leg, and she fractured four vertebrae, requiring her to walk with a cane for now.

“I was bruised from head to toe,” she says. “I couldn’t move. I couldn’t sit without help.”

It took three days of showers for her and Diana to get all the glass out of their hair, she says. Her daughter also was badly bruised and had cuts.

She is concerned for Diana. Right after the crash, her daughter drew marks on the face, legs and arms of her dolls to resemble her own wounds. Diana seems to be returning to normal now, but Limon fears delayed PTSD symptoms could show up later. 

“These things just last,” she says.

Limon is also angry. In the days after the crash, she learned with other passengers and parents that the driver of the concrete truck, a 42-year-old man named Jerry Hernandez, told investigators that he had smoked marijuana and done “a small amount” of cocaine 12 hours before the crash.

Police have charged Hernandez with criminally negligent homicide. At the time of the crash, Hernandez also had warrants out of Hays County for bond violations on past, unrelated charges of assault/family violence and criminal mischief.

“It is incredibly egregious,” Limon’s attorney, Scott Hendler said. He said that as lawsuits mount, he fears the trucking company – which has declined to comment – won’t carry enough insurance to pay for all the damages to the injured children and staff.

Limon hopes to return to work, but right now is too soon. She still wakes from nightmares, swinging into the darkness of her bedroom as if trying to grab a child. She hates riding, even in a car, since the crash, especially on a two-lane road. She braces when she sees oncoming traffic.

Limon’s mind keeps flashing back to the moment just before impact. She desperately wants to rewrite the story of that day.

“These kids had so much fun,” she said. “It is so unfortunate that this is their first experience being on a bus, being on a field trip.”

She paused.

“I just wish it could have gone differently,” she said.

Rays fall flat against MLB-worst White Sox

CHICAGO — Once the afternoon rain stopped, Friday’s game on the South Side of Chicago seemed like the fitting place for the Rays, who have sputtered through the first month of the season, to start getting right.

They came in with the momentum of Wednesday’s win over the Tigers, and the rest from Thursday’s day off.

They had their No. 1 starter, Zach Eflin, on the mound.

They were playing against a White Sox team with a majors-worst 3-22 record that had just returned from an 0-7 road trip (in which it was outscored 49-18) and had lost 13 of its last 14.

And they were facing a starter, Chris Flexen, who had been hit early and often over his first five appearances.

Yet, the Rays faltered again.

The 9-4 defeat was bad enough, dropping the Rays back under .500 at 13-14 as they lost for the fourth time in five games.

Making it worse was the setting — facing a bad team, on a cold and wet night, with a few thousand people in the stands (from an announced 10,323).

“At the end of the day, it’s a big-league team,” Eflin said. “There’s not bad hitters out there. It’s a series that we should win, right? We need to come out prepared to win each and every single game. Fortunately for us, we have two more (games). We have time to win the series. We have plenty of time this season to right the ship.”

The Rays have a lot to address, as they were done in by a similar formula to other losses.

The offense was again ineffective, held to two hits through five-plus innings by Flexen, and nine for the game. The Rays were 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position, leaving a season-high 12 on.

“I don’t think we had the best approach (Friday) with Flexen,” manager Kevin Cash said. “We probably expanded off more pitches off the zone. Even early in the count, it seemed like we were overly aggressive. Maybe that’s a sign of an offensive group that’s recognizing they’re not doing what they’re capable of, and they were probably trying to do too much (Friday).”

The defense has been sloppy, with an error leading to the first White Sox run.

And the pitching has had lapses, such as Eflin keeping the Sox to two runs into the sixth, then allowing two one-out singles and a three-run homer — on a sinker over the middle that was “a really good pitch to hit” — to No. 9 hitter Martin Maldonado, who was 0-for-his-last-28.

“Overall, I didn’t feel like I had my good command all game,” Eflin said, “and it finally caught up to me in the sixth inning.”

About the only good news for the Rays was the negative X-rays of Yandy Diaz’s left hand after he was hit by a 99.3 mph Michael Kopech fastball in the eighth inning. Diaz said he was sore but should be available, at least to pinch hit, on Saturday.

Otherwise, it was another frustrating night in a tough opening month of the season.

“It’s going to all click. It seems like we’re just not all playing good together, like defense, offense, pitching, it’s not all clicking at the same time,” Eflin said. “I tell you guys all the time, it’s 162 games in a season. You’re going to go through some dead spots, you’re going to go through spots where you win 13 in a row.

“So, I think it’s really just keeping our heads high and showing up with as much energy as possible each and every single day. That’s really the one thing we can control right now is our attitude, our will to win, the passion for the game, the energy. Sucks that we’re kind of in a little rut, but we’ve got a long way to go.”
