But you don't have to travel far to flee the crowds and find your own Fijian paradise. About an hour's drive from Nadi, palm-lined Natadola Beach is one of the best beaches in Fiji, with gentle surf and decent snorkeling at its eastern end.

Less touristy than Viti Levu, Vanua Levu is the second largest island in Fiji and a popular destination for nature lovers who like to travel off the beaten path.

In Wasali Rainforest Reserve , waterfalls flow down the lush hillsides, and hiking trails thread through the rainforest to hot springs and panoramic lookouts.

The town of Savusavu has a colorful farmers market, and its sheltered bay is popular with sailors. One of the best ways to explore the island is along the Lavena Coastal Walk , a five-kilometer hiking trail that rims the rugged coastline, where black- and white-sand beaches merge with reef-dappled waters.

Not surprisingly, diving and snorkeling are a highlight — the waters are home to more than 1,198 species of reef fish, almost 300 different species of hard coral, as well as giant clams, turtles, sharks, and rays. Top sites include Rainbow Reef, Eel Reef, the Great White Wall, and Waitabu Marine Park.

Stretching into the shape of a smile, northeast of Taveuni, 240-acre Matangi Island is one of the best islands to stay in Fiji for couples. The romantic, adults-only Matangi Private Island Resort here is a favorite wedding and honeymoon destination.

The island is actually an extinct volcanic crater, with coral reefs fringing the lovely Horseshoe Bay, a seductive curve of white-sand beach lined by palms.

The air-conditioned, thatched bures blend earthy textures with modern luxuries. Some are sprinkled along the shore, while others are split-level treehouses on stilts that stretch up into the lush rainforest canopy. A luxury spa presides over the water's edge.

Activities here include diving, fishing, swimming, kayaking, cultural village and waterfall tours, and treks on nearby Qamea Island . But if doing nothing is your idea of paradise, you can just curl up in a hammock under rustling palms and gaze out at the blue, blue sea.

Far from the well-trodden tourist trail, the unspoiled Kadavu group of islands are known for the fantastic diving on the Great Astrolabe Reef , the planet's fourth largest barrier reef .

About 100 kilometers south of Viti Levu, Kadavu Island is the largest in the group, with volcanic peaks and vast tracts of virgin rainforest cloaking its interior. These jungles support an impressive diversity of birds, including the Kadavu musk parrot, velvet dove, and crimson shining parrot.

Tourist infrastructure is practically non-existent, except for a few friendly eco-resorts strung along the coast, some with organic gardens and pretty beaches. Matava and Papageno Resort are two of the favorites.

Guided kayaking trips are a great way to explore the coastline, and you can also visit some of the local villages for a dose of authentic Fijian culture. This is one of the world's rare places, where you can drop off the grid and immerse yourself in pristine natural beauty, both on land and in the water.

For relatively dry weather and less chance of tropical storms, the best time to visit Fiji is July through September . Bear in mind, though, that is high season, and accommodation and flights will be more expensive.

From November through April, tropical systems move into the area , and heavy rain can pound the islands, but if you don't mind this, you'll find the cheapest rates at this time of year.

But there is a sweet spot. If you travel in the shoulder seasons , May through June, and October, you'll have a better chance of decent weather and cheaper rates. Plus, these months are generally outside school holidays in this part of the world, so the islands won't be as crowded.

They’ll be able to hand-feed turtles, and the staff might even let mum and dad have a go too. There are a couple of adrenaline-fuelled activities available in the park too – such as the Splash Mountain Jungle Water Slide and the Canopy Flier Zipline. #5 – Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Why it’s awesome: We’ve mentioned that there are some great beaches in Fiji but we haven’t talked about one specifically yet. Well, that has just changed. If you’re staying on Viti Levu, you’re in luck. That’s because Natadola Beach is one of the best on the island! As you’d imagine from a South Pacific Island beach, there are long expanse of sand that runs down to the turquoise water, which is perfectly calm. In fact, this is one of the few beaches in Fiji where you can swim no matter where the tide is.

What to do there: As well as swimming, you can try your hand at a whole host of watersports on Natadola Beach. The breaks here are the perfect conditions for surfing, so it’s a great place to take your first steps on the water. More experienced surfers can head out a little further to find some big waves too. Snorkeling and kayaking can also be enjoyed at this incredible beach, or you could just relax on the sand and catch a tan! Whatever you choose to do, it’s one of the best places in Fiji if you’re looking for a beach!

#8 – Monuriki – Certainly one of the most exotic places to see in Fiji

You can take tours to it though, and they’ll be a truly memorable experience!

What to do there: Snorkelling of Monuriki is great, but deep-sea diving is even better. You’ll be mesmerized by brightly coloured tropical fish, lazy turtles, and a rainbow of coral reefs. This really is something to tick off the bucket list, and one of the top Fiji vacation ideas!

#9 – Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park – A beautiful and scenic place to check out in Fiji

Why it’s awesome: Head to the southwest corner of Viti Levu to find this incredible national park. Sigatoka Sand Dunes are one of the best places in Fiji for hiking and seeing a variety of landscapes. The sand dunes are the most impressive part! They cover 650 hectares and some can be up to 60 metres high! That may not sound much when compared to a mountain, but you just try and climb to the summit! The park is also an important archaeological site, belonging to a primitive culture which lived here 2,600 years ago.

What to do there: Start off your visit to Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park at the Visitor’s Information Centre. If you’re nervous about getting lost, you can get a guided tour from a local ranger. These last for one, two, or four hours and will take you through meadows, an inland forest, onto a gorgeous beach, and through the dunes which give the national park their name! The dunes are in fact some of the most impressive landmarks in Fiji!

#10 – Udre Udre’s Grave – One of the more unique places to visit in Fiji

• Said to have eaten more than 800 people
• Definitely one of the more unusual things to do in Fiji

Why it’s awesome: You’ve seen the old-time films that show cannibalism on South Pacific islands. And, you’ve probably dismissed them as a load of old rubbish really! However, these stories did come from somewhere, and cannibalism is actually a part of Fijian history . Actually, Fiji was home to the most prolific cannibal of all time (that we know of at least), Udre Udre. He is alleged to have eaten the flesh of more than 800 of his enemies! It’s a great story, and seeing his grave is one of the most unusual things to do in Fiji!

What to do there: Right on the north coast of Fiji, this is one of the best places to visit in Fiji if you want to tell your friends back home you’ve gone off the beaten track and seen something a bit weird. Supposedly, Udre Udre kept a stone from each time one of his enemies was grilled. You can see all 800 of them surrounding the grave in Rakiraki!

That’s because there are a number of resorts dotted along with the coast catering to all budgets! Adventurers shouldn’t miss out on Pacific Harbor, the undisputed adventure capital of Fiji!

What to do there: As well as doing extreme sports like skydiving and parasailing from Pacific Harbor, there are some more sedate opportunities too. To the west of the Coral Coast, you’ll find Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park which we mentioned earlier. You can also hike up to Tavuni Hill Fort, go diving in the beautifully blue Beqa Lagoon, or take a river cruise through the rugged and scenic Namosi Highlands. The Top-Rated Islands To Visit In Fiji

Fiji is a nation in the South Pacific that exudes tropical bliss. Visit just once, and you'll see why — the country is filled with long sandy beaches lined with slender palm trees, clear water teeming with marine life, and rugged interiors that are great for exploring. But Fiji isn't just one island where all of this is concentrated; it's a multi-spoke, regal realm scattered amid outrageously gorgeous oceans, more than 1,000 miles north of bucket list favorite New Zealand. There are more than 300 islands that comprise what is known as Fiji, and while about two-thirds of them are uninhabited, many of them have plenty to offer travelers. 

A trip to Fiji is all about fabulous seas great for swimming and snorkeling, mountainous regions with amazing hiking opportunities, and rich local culture that will forge lasting memories. By focusing on isles that visitors can enjoy — we've discounted islands that might be paradisal but that have no facilities for tourists or have nothing that visitors can really experience — and using information from travel blogs and our own experience, we've put together this list of the best of the best Fijian islands.

A tiny paradise off the main Fijian island of Viti Levu, Beqa isn't overflowing with tourism infrastructure. There are only a few places to stay here, among them the comfortable, well-appointed Beqa Lagoon Resort, where the grounds are meticulously landscaped, and the diving is of global renown. What makes this rocky island stand out is the legendary fire walkers who practice their unique skills on Beqa. A custom started over 500 years ago, fire walking on Beqa originates in legend. 

When a villager captured a small deity, it offered him protection from fire in exchange for freedom. The descendants of that villager continue the daring feat of walking on top of smoldering river stones — the island's Sawau peoples are the sole practitioners of this remarkable exploit. To watch a ceremony is an eye-opening experience. Walkers create a large pit, more than 10 feet across and a few feet deep, that they load with stones from the river. A fire on top of the rocks heats them, and once the fire subsides, performers carefully navigate their way across the searing stones.

Denarau Island

Despite its name, Denarau Island is not technically an island. And yet, this enclave near the international airport in Nadi is filled with resorts and feels like a realm separated, figuratively distanced from all around it. A small causeway leads over a river to Denarau, and within its compact confines, visitors will find a range of properties, including places to hold conferences and weddings. 

Among the eight resorts are the Sheraton Denarau Villas, where large accommodations are kitted out with full kitchens, and the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa, which has a bar with 30 different types of rum. For families, the choices on Denarau Island are plentiful — from explorative boat rides to explore and some sublime snorkeling  to wild water slides at Big Bula Waterpark ("bula" is a word travelers will see and hear frequently in Fiji, it means "hello," or "welcome"). Adults might book tee times for a round on the golf course or unwind with a treatment at the many spas.

Kadavu is the fourth-largest island in Fiji, but it might not come with instant name recognition. That's because Kadavu is a wild, largely untouched destination, with dense jungles, craggy shores, crowd-free waterfalls, and beaches that are quiet and not always easy to reach (that makes them extra special). For snorkelers and divers, Kadavu is not to be missed, with visibility that almost defies belief. The Great Astrolabe Reef skirts the bottom part of the island, extending for many miles, and among its vivid coral formations, water bunnies can look for graceful manta rays. 

Landlubbers won't feel like they are missing out, thanks to hiking trails that wind through the rainforest or in and out of local villages. Vatalutu Trail, for instance, is a three-hour trek that deposits hikers on an empty, blissfully beautiful beach. Birdwatchers will also prize their time here, hoping to spot the four endemic birds on the island, among them the shining musk parrot and the yellow-headed whistling dove. Getting to Kadavu is straightforward, less than an hour by plane from Nadi, but its natural environment might make you feel like you've traveled a million miles from Fiji's international hub.

Kokomo Island

A passion project by an Australian property magnate, this island is a private resort with incredible snorkeling and diving on the reef. Kokomo Private Island Resort is pure luxury through and through, and getting to the island requires a private transfer aboard the resort's helicopter or seaplane. This sense of fantasy escape prepares guests for what lies ahead. For travelers looking for an easy island resort option in Fiji with a good dose of local flavor, this one is hard to beat. And yet, less than half a century ago, there was little on the island. It was primarily used for ceremonies or day trips by the local chiefs. 

The 23 bures (the word Fijians use for their bungalows) on the island are small, simply appointed abodes, some with sun decks, others split over two floors. A host of activities on-site keep guests entertained, including groups that visit as part of a tour. Visitors can learn about bush medicine — using local plants and herbs to heal ailments — or demonstrations on how to climb a coconut tree. Guests can try their hand at the traditional Fijian art form of weaving or enroll in a cooking class to learn about the secrets of local cuisine. Snorkeling and kayaking let visitors drink in the beauty of the seas. Mamanuca Islands

The port of Levuka is the country's former colonial capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Even though Suva is the modern capital of Fiji, Levuka holds great cultural significance for its amalgam of local construction methods employed by a colonial power. 

Walking around the town today, visitors will see old timber homes with gables on the roofs, a former parliament house, old historic residences, and tracks used by the trams that served the ports. This is a fascinating journey into the past, and the country's first government school, oldest hotel, and the first Masonic Temple in the South Pacific are all here. Known informally as the Garden Isle, Taveuni is a verdant gem in a realm of brilliant blue. Much of the isle is blanketed by the Bouma National Heritage Park, a huge slash of forest and jungle with fine walking trails. The most magnetic attraction is the Tavoro Falls (sometimes called the Bouma Falls), which sits close to the visitors' center. It's a striking sight, a channel of water surrounded by dense green foliage and dropping over cliffs into an emerald pool. Hikers can also try the Lavena Coastal Walk on the island's southeastern coast. It curls along beaches, over rivers, and through tight tracts of jungle before ending at a tranquil cascade. 

More seasoned trekkers will relish the challenge of reaching the crater of Lake Tagimoucia, thousands of feet above sea level, and home to an endemic, delicate scarlet flower that blooms only for a few months of the year. And yet, it's the blue that draws many visitors to Taveuni, the chance to dive in the Somosomo Strait, which has some of the best wall-diving in the world. The Great White Wall features a stark drop with bright, hard corals and an endless sea of white soft corals that give the site its name. Plunge below the surface, and you'll also see fish, rays, and maybe even humpback whales.

The second-largest island in Fiji, Vanua Levu has a strong yachting culture. It's an easy-going island with hilly, forested interiors and tucked-away coves and bays. There are resorts all over the island, though many congregate around the southern hub of Savusavu. The town is the main settlement on Vanua Levu and is where yachts gather to pick up supplies before venturing out to the archipelago of the Lau Islands, a group of isles with great physical beauty but little infrastructure. Savusavu is also the launching point for trips to Namena Marine Reserve, where a healthy reef and the prohibition of fishing have helped to create a sound population of sea life. 

Adventurers also have the option to take to the water through different mediums — via a tubing excursion on the Sekawa River or under the thundering curtain of a rainforest waterfall. The capital, Suva, is the largest city in the country and is filled with markets, malls, museums, and many places to eat. The northern Suncoast region is where Viti Levu really gets wild — it's home to the highest mountain and waterfall in the country and strands of beaches along the shore.

Yasawa Islands

Northwest of Viti Levu, this scattering of islands also promises stunning wilderness. Both on land and off, active types will find plenty to get them engaged and excited, like the spectacular Sawa-i-Lau caves. Set on a small island with a craggy coast and a towering peak, the saltwater caves were immortalized on celluloid in the 1980 movie "Blue Lagoon." It's a popular spot, with boats frequently dropping by to see the famous location, but the caves' origins are anchored in a legend surrounding a hawk and a princess. 

The caves' most beautiful aspect is the glimmering pools fed by seawater that, when hit by the light, feels like a magical domain rooted in imagination. The islands are covered with hills and mountains, making them fine arenas for hikes. On Waya Island, trails that ride over the hills and shadow the shore bring walkers to stunning viewpoints. We drew on our travels to the country and then gleaned information from travel blogs and sites and the country's official tourism board to find the best islands for explorers near and far.

Viti Levu is Fiji’s largest island and home to around 80 percent of Fiji’s citizens. Sunbathing on the sandy beaches of the Coral Coast on Viti Levu’s southwestern side and snorkeling over its shallow reefs are popular options, but there’s more to the island than its pretty coastline.

Tamani says, “This is where they farm, where they hunt, where they fish. When you think of Taveuni – Fiji's third-largest island – you should picture snorkeling and scuba diving. The coral reefs are unbelievably gorgeous and diverse. The world-famous Rainbow Reef sits off this island, which plays host to a colorful array of corals and the stunning Great White Wall. But you can be shocked and awed on dry land, too.

Several hikes like the Lavena Coastal Walk (which terminates at a waterfall pool) and the Vidawa Rainforest Trail will afford you beautiful vistas. Both of these hikes are in or near Bouma National Heritage Park. You'll pay a small fee to access the park, but visitors say it is worth the price of admission. You can hitch a ride to Taveuni by plane or boat from Viti Levu or Vanua Levu (to learn more, check out our guide to Getting Around Fiji ). If you choose to fly, be sure to book a few extra days on either end of your stay, as planes are sometimes cancelled or delayed for weather. Firewalking Ceremony Firewalking Ceremony

Vilavilairevo, Fijian for "jumping into the oven," is the practice of firewalking. And it's not just the stroll across fire that's amazing; rather, it's the walking on fire without getting burned that's astonishing. It's said that the practice originated with a man named Tunaiviqalita of Beqa Island, who convinced a spirit god to allow him to forever have the ability to walk on scalding stones. It is said the ability to walk on the stones has passed through Tunaiviqalita's bloodline. Today, you can watch firewalking ceremonies at resorts throughout Fiji, but you can bet that the men doing it grew up in Beqa. Many resorts, like Outrigger on the Lagoon , offer regular firewalking shows to guests as part of its Signature Experience.

Fiji Museum Fiji Museum

The Fiji Museum tells the history of the archipelago with artifacts that span 3,700 years. From cannibal forks to shell jewelry to Indian artwork, the items here showcase a long and diverse history.

Recent visitors said the museum is well done and gives a great overview of Fijian culture and history. Several lauded the on-site gift store. As an added bonus, the museum is easily accessible on foot.

Port Denarau Marina Port Denarau Marina free

Port Denarau is located on Fiji's Denarau Island, which is connected to Viti Levu by bridge and is just a 20-minute drive from Nadi International Airport. Of course, you can hop on a boat and sail to other islands – like the Mamanucas –from this port. But you can also stay on dry land and enjoy the hotels , restaurants and shopping at the approximately 32,800-square-foot Retail and Commercial Centre. There's also an 18-hole golf course and opportunities for water sports like jet-boating.

Recent visitors enjoyed visiting the marina, saying that it has a variety of delicious food options. Several travelers also noted that there is a convenience store, which is a good place to avoid expensive hotel prices on travel essentials. Garden of the Sleeping Giant Garden of the Sleeping Giant

The Garden of the Sleeping Giant is located in the foothills of the Nausori Highlands. The highlight here is the garden's collection of vibrant orchids. Once part of a private collection owned by the Canadian TV actor Raymond Burr, the orchids have thrived in Fiji's tropical climate. Another must-do is the "jungle walk," which wanders past a lily pond and through a native rainforest.

Travelers said that the garden is a gorgeous and peaceful place to visit. They also loved the complimentary drink at the end of their walk. Others appreciated the garden's beauty, but were not sure if it was worth the admission price.

What you need to know before going to Fiji

With 333 islands making up this South Pacific dreamscape, it would take a lifetime to truly explore every corner of Fiji . For the past six years, I’ve been living in Fiji’s capital city of Suva and have made many travel mistakes and cultural snafus so you don’t have to. 

From which island to choose to kava drinking etiquette to packing essentials, these are the dos and don’ts of traveling to Fiji.   

1. What do I need to know before going to Fiji?

No two islands are exactly alike in Fiji and it’s worth researching the main ones before you arrive.

If you’re limited on time and want to see some of the country’s best beaches, spend your time island-hopping around the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands . For waterfall-laden hiking trails and technicolor coral reefs, Taveuni awaits. Viti Levu , the main island, is home to Fiji’s capital city of Suva and hosts some of Fiji’s best-value resorts, cultural activities, hiking, and most of Fiji’s population. 

To stay somewhere truly novel, try Beqa, which is famous for its firewalkers and has a strong cultural connection to the bull sharks that cruise around its surrounding reefs. Vanua Levu , Fiji’s second largest island, hosts the quaint town of Savusavu, a hub for scuba diving, freediving and laidback living. 

If you’re keen to splash out on a five-star stay, take your pick of private island resorts – accessible by private helicopter, seaplane or boat – that offer an air of exclusivity not easily found elsewhere. Some top recommendations include Kokomo Private Island Fiji , Vomo Island Resort , and Castaway Island Resort . 

2. Stay at small resorts and homestays for a Fijian experience

As a rule, the larger the resort, the less Fijian your trip may feel. Most of the international chain resorts are found on Denarau Island , a manmade island that makes up for its lackluster beach with plenty of pools, bars and restaurants.

Smaller resorts and homestays tend to be decorated with locally made art, offer guided trips to nearby villages and serve Fijian fare. Once staff members knock off for the day, they’re likely to invite you for a round or two of kava. If you want an intimate stay, Finding Islands Tours hosts immersive cultural trips on land and sea where you’ll learn about traditional ways of life and interesting facts about Fiji. 

3. Schedule your outdoor adventures towards the beginning of your trip

Life in the tropics means that no matter the weather forecast, you could experience rain or bluebird skies (or both) on any given day. Plan your hikes, scuba dives, snorkel tours, sailing trips and other outdoor adventures towards the beginning of your stay. That way, you’ll have time to reschedule should the weather interfere with your plans. 

4. Come for at least a week – the longer the better

If you plan to visit just one or two areas of Fiji, a week is enough time to have a balance of sightseeing and relaxing. If you hope to see more, you’ll lose at least half a day in transit whenever you island hop. There’s no way to see everything on one visit, so it’s best to slow down and pick just a few places to stay. If you’d prefer to do more rather than less, embark on day trips from your accommodation rather than changing sleeping spots every other day. 

5. Go all-out when it comes to packing floral patterns and color

Go ahead and pack the floral button-up shirt or dress hiding in the back of your closet. Fijians tend to dress in bright, bold colors, often covered with Pacific Island patterns or tropical prints. A nice pair of sandals and a cheerful outfit will carry you from casual beach bars to fine-dining venues to the streets of Suva. If your outfit covers your shoulders and knees, it’ll also suit for village and church visits. 

6. The buses and taxis are affordable on the main islands

Save money traveling around Viti Levu by riding the bus. The large buses connecting Nadi International Airport have space for luggage storage and are air-conditioned; Sunbeam and Pacific offer express services between Suva and Nadi. Public buses tend to be even cheaper but stop frequently and lack air conditioning. Taxis are metered, and generally affordable, but are only available on Fiji’s larger islands. 

7. Get ready to embrace the bula spirit

Wherever you go, you’re likely to hear a hearty “ bula !” from those around you. Fijians are famous for their hospitality and generally forgiving of etiquette blunders. A few Fijian words will carry you through many social situations. Bula means "hello,"  vinaka means "thank you" and moce (pronounced "mo-they") means "see you later." 

If you ask a Fijian a question and they raise their eyebrows, you can take the answer as a yes. The word "set" is usually used as "okay." If you hear someone blowing kisses in public, it’s likely not a catcall – Fijians use this sound to grab attention from a person they know.

8. Don’t enter a village empty-handed

Whenever you enter a village, it’s customary to bring a sevusevu  (gift). Traditionally, this gift is yaqona or kava , a pepper root that is ground into a fine powder and drunk from a large wooden bowl called a tanoa . Depending on the reason for your visit, the village representative might invite you to drink kava with the community or simply grant you access to their land if you’ve come to go on a hike, visit a waterfall, or simply want to take a tour. 

9. Avoid wearing anything on your head whenever you enter a village

When you dress to enter a village, both men and women are typically expected to wear a sulu (sarong), wrapped around their waists and a shirt that covers the shoulders. Wearing anything on your head, like sunglasses or a hat, is considered impolite. If you’re bringing a backpack, carry it like a purse in the nook of your arm rather than on your back. Avoid lingering in doorways for too long once you’ve been invited into a room.

10. Don’t be afraid to ask for etiquette tips on drinking kava from a local

If you are invited to drink kava in a village, it will likely be with the head of the village and other members of the community and served in the community hall. When you enter, take off your shoes at the door and sit cross-legged on the floor near your village representative, who is usually someone assigned to host you for the experience. Kava is poured from a large bowl and served in a coconut shell, called a bilo . 

It’s customary to accept the first bilo of kava offered to you. Every village is slightly different when it comes to how they drink kava : some clap before drinking, some say “ bula ” and clap after drinking, and some receive the bilo with both hands instead of one. When in doubt, ask the Fijian you’re sitting near. It’s okay to politely skip rounds and request "low tide" (a half-full coconut shell) if you wish to pace yourself. 

11. Rugby is the sport of choice

There’s no sport more beloved than rugby in Fiji. After work and on weekends, rugby pitches are abuzz with activity, and making small talk about the sport is a surefire way to gain fast friends. Even if you don’t know the ins and outs of rugby playing, it’s worth attending a game or pulling up a chair to watch a televised match at a bar. 

12. Not all tap water is drinkable

The tap water is typically potable in Suva, and most hotels provide filtered drinking water. Elsewhere, you’ll want to bring your own bottled water or carry a filter, like a Lifestraw, to drink from.  

13. Take extra care in the cities after dark

When it comes to safety in Fiji, follow the same precautions you’d take in any major city. Stow your belongings out of sight and keep your wits about you. Crime against tourists is low in Fiji and typically involves theft. Avoid going out drinking alone at night and take extra care around the bars near Nadi and Suva late at night as this is where most muggings and assaults occur.

14. Contact the police, hotel, or head of the village should things go wrong

On the major islands of Fiji, contact the police (911 for emergencies, and 917 for police services) for assistance. On Fiji’s outer islands, there may not be an official police posting. In this case, it’s best to seek help from your accommodation or the head of the village, called the turaga ni koro.

12 Things to do in Fiji – The Ultimate South Pacific Dream Trip

Located in the South Pacific Ocean, Fiji is a tropical paradise that attracts. adventure and beach lovers alike. Here are our ideas for the best things to do in Fiji. 

“Bula Vinakka! Hello, Welcome to Fiji!” You will hear these words everywhere you go in Fiji as warm and genuine smiles greet you at every turn.

Things to do in Fiji

With its 322 islands to explore, planning a vacation to Fiji can be overwhelming. Where do you begin? Well, we suggest making a base on the main island of Viti Levu at one of its luxury resorts and then plan day trips to some of the popular and more isolated islands by boat.

Fiji is a tropical paradise that’s a thousand miles from anywhere filled with waterfalls, rainforests, and white sandy beaches. Here are our suggestions for what to do in Fiji.

1. Kava Ceremony

When traveling to Fiji you must take part in a traditional Kava ceremony.  As you enter any establishment, hotel, or restaurant, you people will yell Bula Vinaka and offer up Kava to welcome you. Kava is a mild narcotic so you will feel a little numbness in your tongue, but don’t worry, it won’t hurt you and you’ll feel very relaxed afterward.

How a Kava Ceremony Works

When visiting any village in Fiji it is customary to present a gift of Yaqona (Kava root). The root is ground down and strained through a cloth and into a large wooden bowl.

• The ceremony then begins as the villagers grind up the Kava and strain it through a cloth bag into a large wooden bowl placed in the middle of the room.
• It is then offered to your chief who is the oldest man in your group
• Then the village’s executive head drinks the Kava
• After that it is shared with everyone.
• The men drink first and then the women.

2. Raft the Upper Navua River

Rafting the Upper Navua River is probably one of the most peaceful and beautiful rafting trips we’ve ever taken. The rapids are a leisurely class 3 and 4 but you still get the blood pumping as you bump up and down the river with your very fun guides.

If you have a fear of White Water Rafting, Fiji is the place to do it. The trip takes you 26 km down the most picturesque scenery you will ever witness. Waterfalls of all sizes stream down the deep canyons surrounded by lush jungle.

This is an eco-friendly tour. The village chiefs were asked and many a Kava Ceremony took place to allow Whitewater rafting on their island. All tours are run by the villagers and all guides are local.

3. Visit the Oho Caves – Home of the Headhunters

The Oho Caves were home to the Navatua Tribe: the fiercest tribe in Fiji.

I often think that Fiji must have been the inspiration for Gilligan’s Island . After all, Fiji is the land of the headhunter, and Gilligan was marooned on a beautiful paradise island filled with headhunters. When visiting Fiji, you can learn a great deal about its history by taking a tour to the Oho Caves.

The great Navatua Tribe was the first tribe in the area to give up the practice of headhunting and embrace Christianity. After that everything changed. The villagers and the chiefs were so happy to have us experience their community and we highly recommend this activity when visiting Fiji.

It is a newer tour, so make sure to ask specifically for the Oho Caves tour of the Tao Village. 

4. Go Ziplining

The Pacific Coast is the adventure capital of Fiji and zip lining is the number one attraction here. Zip Fiji offers a canopy tour that lasts an afternoon taking you through 8 zip lines that soar over the jungle canopy. The lines are long, they are fast, and they are fun!

Like most Fiji attractions, Ziplining is eco-friendly. Ropes and harnesses are used to fasten the metal platforms to the trunks of the trees rather than nails.

Great care was taken to make sure that the surrounding vegetation was not disturbed when creating ziplines. It makes for an amazing experience zipping over an untouched jungle canopy.

5. Jet Boat Safari

Jet Boating the Sigatoka river is by far the wildest Jet Boat Experience we’ve ever taken. The small boat whizzes through the river, doing 360s at lightning-fast speeds through incredible scenery.

The local guides are knowledgeable about the history and Fijian culture telling us stories of the old headhunter ways. It was in 1867 that the last Cannibalized human was eaten. The Reverend Baker made the grave mistake of taking a comb out of a village chief’s hair and he paid the ultimate penalty.

They killed the missionary and barbecued him over an open flame. They then ate him and even tried to eat his boots! Between stories like this and heart-pounding twists and turns, it’s an excursion we’ll never forget!

6. Visit a Traditional Fijian Village

Immerse in Fijian culture as you take a boat down the river far away from civilization. Stopping at Tuvu Village to take part in a Kava ceremony with the villagers was one of our most memorable moments on Fiji. Everyone is friendly and welcoming and the afternoon is spent dancing, eating, and listening to music.

Here we enjoyed a very authentic Kava Ceremony. Kava ceremonies happen at all resorts and around the island, but at a traditional village, it is done as it has been for centuries. Plus, the Kava mixture is potent. You’ll have a numb tongue for hours!

7. Visit a traditional salt factory

Gathering salt from tidal pools is hard work. A visit to a traditional salt factory will give you a first-hand view of just how difficult that work is. Women walk out to wells located in a tidal pool to gather water to be harvested for salt..

They carry buckets of saltwater back to a very hot and humid hut where they boil it until it evaporates. It is here that traditional salt methods live on as they have for centuries.

8. Island Hop

There are so many islands that are waiting to be explored by you just off the coast of Fiji. We have had the luxury of visiting Fiji twice and have taken part in three different day cruises to explore secluded islands.

The most popular islands to visit in Fiji are the Mamanuca islands. They are located just off the coast of the main island of Vitu Navu.

There are daily flights from Nadi airport if you want to go out for an overnight trip, or you can take a taxi to Port Denarau from Nadi to catch a transfer to one of the islands. Here you’ll be able to snorkel the incredible barrier reefs of Fiji.

• A popular resort on the Mamanuca Islands is the Beachcomber Islands Resort.

We took a day cruise one of our luxury stays at The Pearl Fiji to a private beach. Many resorts offer days tours to the islands. Are you dreaming yet?

9. Swim with Manta Rays

Scuba diving is a very popular activity in Fiji with its crystal clear waters and coral reefs.

• Shark Reef Marine Reserve has some of the best shark diving in the world
• Sososomo Strait is known for its soft coral
• The Great Astrolabe Reef has incredible corals and wall dives.

But, between May and October, it’s manta ray season that attracts snorkelers and scuba divers to Fiji. Barefoot Manta Island is the main attraction for swimming and diving with Manta Rays.

10. Paintball at Sonaisali

A unique adventure in Fiji is to take a trip out to the Sonaisali Resort for a game of Paintball in the jungle. Crawling around in the heat and humidity made me think of just how awful things must have been for soldiers on both sides of the Vietnam War.

War games in the tropics hard enough for us. But it was a pure blast to be able to crawl around in the mud and hide from the opposing team. Everything you need is supplied. Just wear a good pair of durable shoes and bring a sense of adventure.

11. Garden of the Sleeping Giant

If you are looking for something a little offbeat to do in Fiji, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant is a lovely attraction for outdoor lovers. Botanists will love this garden filled with orchids and plants of the South Pacific.

Take the raised canopy through a winding forest trail to spy the original collection of flowers by Raymond Burr. (now that’s a random fact)

12. Spa Day at the Pearl

There is nothing better than basking in luxury at The Pearl Fiji. Located on the quieter side of the island it’s the perfect couples retreat. Their couples massage was like no other. We were lucky enough to have a suite at this resort and a full day to relax and enjoy each other’s company. We also had another incredible spa day in Fiji at Outrigger Fiji.

Where to stay in Fiji

• The Pearl was by far our favourite accommodation
• Sonaisali Resort was wonderful too. We definitely would have spent a few more days here.
• Outrigger Fiji is very family-oriented and we didn’t love it, but other people seemed to think it was grand.

With 332 islands to explore, it could take a lifetime to truly see all everything and experience all the things to do in Fiji, but if you have a couple of weeks, you can definitely have your dream trip of a lifetime. We cannot wait to go back again and hear those two uplifting words again – Bula Vinakka!

Most people think that Fiji is all turquise blue water, white sand and perfectly-placed palm trees swaying in the breeze. But that’s not the real Fiji. It’s much more raw than that. 79. Visit the Vuadomo Village and Waterfall on Vanua Levu

Yes, more scuba diving, this time at the Bligh Water  and the  Vatu-i-Ra Passage . These dive sites between the Suncoast and the Yasawa Islands are relaxing enough for beginners. 91. Catch One of Fiji’s Festivals

Unsurprisingly, there is a festival in Fiji called the  Bula Festival ! It’s held every July in Nadi with extravagant floats, live music, dancing, a beauty pageant and much more in this tourist-friendly festival. 92. Hike to Lovoni Village in a Volcanic Crater on Ovalau Island

Fiji: The 333-Island Nation Bursting With Bula Spirit

From barely there islets peering above the sea’s surface to large islands with lush mountains to explore, Fiji, located three hours north of New Zealand by plane, is a destination for adventure lovers. On land, you can relax with a coconut shell filled with kava, trek along waterfall trails, and whitewater raft through a misty gorge. Underwater, you could come eye to eye with bull sharks, search for small critters hidden in colorful coral reefs, and watch as manta rays glide through the water like graceful acrobats. 

Around 925,000 people live in the 333-island nation, with around 70% residing on the largest island of Viti Levu. Elsewhere, the islands feel sparsely populated, even during peak tourism season. With a culture that prides itself on being exceptionally friendly, Fiji is sure to make you feel like a welcome guest.

An island for me, an island for you

With 333 islands throughout this Pacific Island nation, there’s bound to be an island that suits every interest. Viti Levu, the largest island, houses Fiji’s capital city of Suva and the widest range of accommodations and activities. Viti Levu is a spectacular hub if you’re short on time and want to scuba dive, venture out on a multi-day hike, spend the night in a village, go river rafting, and get high value for money. 

If it’s palm-lined, sandy beaches you seek, head to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, a string of islands with an array of resorts, turquoise waters, world-class waves, and snorkeling. Taveuni, known as the Garden Island, trades beaches for lush jungle trails leading to waterfalls. To visit Fiji's old capital, Levuka, a historic port town and Fiji's only UNESCO World Heritage site, Ovalau awaits. To witness firewalkers, there’s Beqa. If you want to go well away from the tourist trail, charter a sailboat with captain and crew or book a cruise to the Lau group. 

Fiji’s islands span about 7,000 square miles, and they’re clustered into nine island groups. It would take months to cover them all. You’ll make the most of your trip by spending a week or two on a single island or group, as it’s time-consuming (and expensive) to transit from one group to the other. 

From fierce marine predators to soft corals 

All it takes is a mask and snorkel to see why  Jacques Cousteau , one of the founders of modern scuba diving, named Fiji the “Soft Coral Capital of the World.” (Some sources say it was actually his son, Jean-Michel, who dubbed the nickname, though Jacques is generally accepted throughout Fiji.) 

Although coral reefs are found throughout all of Fiji’s waters, there are a few reef systems that stand out among the rest. In the Somosomo Strait, between the islands of Taveuni and Vanua Levu, dive sites like the Great White Wall, the Purple Wall, and the Rainbow Reef are all aptly named after the corals that make them up.

The Great Astrolabe Reef, surrounding Kadavu, is one of the largest barrier reef systems in the world and home to corals, sharks, sea turtles, a gamut of crustaceans, and a large squadron of manta rays. Manta rays also cruise through the currents of the Yasawa Islands. 

The truly intrepid can blow bubbles with bull sharks (and the occasional tiger shark) off Beqa Island. While bull sharks tend to be the main draw, it’s common to see up to eight species of sharks on a single dive.  Beqa Adventure Divers and  Coral Coast Divers run regular fun dives for certified divers to the shark dive sites, as well as certification courses for first-time divers. 

Most of the larger hotels and resorts are affiliated with reputable dive centers and can arrange dive trips directly from your accommodation. All dive centers in Fiji will require you to have your PADI dive certification for fun dives. New divers can sign up for a Discovery Scuba course to gain a taste of Fiji’s diving scene or enroll in a multi-day course to return home with a dive license. 

Kick back with a bilo of kava

Kava, a relaxing drink made from ground pepper root, is the de facto national drink of Fiji that’s enjoyed both in formal and casual settings around the islands. Friends, colleagues, and even political opponents are known to find resolutions through talanoa—talking while sharing a bilo (coconut shell) filled with kava.

Although most hotels offer some form of kava, it’s best to try it within the community. Some tour operators, like  Finding Islands Tours , arrange village visits where you’ll spend the day enjoying meals made from local produce and drinking kava. Don’t be surprised if the afternoon ends with singing and dancing as the rounds of kava keep coming—participation is encouraged. 

If you do find yourself sitting around a tanoa (wooden bowl) of kava, keep a few  etiquette tips in mind. Whenever you enter a village, bring kava, remove any items from your head, wear a sulu (sarong) around your waist, and avoid lingering in doorways. Sit where your village representative suggests. When you are offered a bilo of kava, clap your hands and say “Bula!” before grabbing the bilo. Then, drink it all at once. It’s polite to take the first round offered to you, but don’t be afraid to skip or ask for smaller portions, called “low tide,” on subsequent rounds. 

Smile and wave

When big waves come to Fiji, professional surfers follow. In 2022, 11-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater told  InsideHook his favorite wave is  Restaurants , a wave found off the Fijian island of Tavarua. In 2024, the iconic wave of Cloudbreak, also near Tavarua, will be a featured stop on the World Surf League Championship Tour.

You don’t have to be an experienced surfer to enjoy Fiji’s world-class waves. There are plenty of intermediate and beginner-friendly waves within an hour-long boat ride from Viti Levu’s western coastline. Surf tours run half- and full-day trips to the waves, with surfers sorted by skill level. If you’re keen to get coaching from one of Fiji’s former WSL competitors, Inia Nakalevu runs private surf tours through his company  Dream Surf Fiji . 

Let your tastebuds lead the way

Drive along the Queen’s Highway on Viti Levu, and you’ll get a glimpse of how fertile some of Fiji’s islands can be. Trees heavy with mangoes, papayas, coconuts, bananas, and noni fruit stand amidst fields of taro, ferns, and cassava. Pass any market, and you’ll find seasonal produce sold by the pile. 

Indigenous Fijian fare incorporates local produce, seafood, and meat, often cooked together in an underground oven called a lovo. Try palusami—taro leaves, coconut cream, onion, and spices wrapped in a banana leaf and baked for a smoky and creamy comfort food. Or, try a salad made from nama (fresh sea grapes), ota (young fern leaves), and coconut milk, often called a nama or ota salad. But, no foodie should leave without trying kokoda, fresh raw fish marinated in lime juice and mixed with coconut milk, chopped tomatoes, and cucumber. 

Because 40% of the population is Indian, island-style curries made with ingredients like fresh coconut milk, just-caught fish, and zesty ginger are found throughout Fiji, especially in Suva, Lautoka, Nadi, and Labasa. One of the best local-run restaurant chains,  Swagat , has restaurants in Suva and Nadi. Its flavorful dishes and plethora of scrumptious curries—best enjoyed family-style—make it a popular pick among locals. 

Not-so- Castaway experience

Although it’s possible to experience Fiji on a budget ( Castaway was filmed here after all), it’s a destination that leans into luxury. Some private island resorts are so exclusive—and expensive—they’re thought to be the place where the billionaires go to escape the millionaires. 

Private island resorts offer all-inclusive experiences where meals are crafted to your cravings, dive guides will lead personalized tours of the reef, spa treatments are done with Fijian-made oils and lotions, each room has a dedicated staff member, and the island is solely reachable by private boat or air transfer. COMO Laucala Island Resort, Kokomo Private Island Resort, and Turtle Fiji Resort are prime examples, with prices starting well over $1,000 USD per night. 

However, if you want a luxury-type experience without the luxurious price tag, you can opt for a different kind of small-island stay, which might include dorm-style accommodations or communal bathrooms, like at Octopus Island Resort and Barefoot Manta Island Resort. Castaway Island Fiji also offers a more stylish stay with a smaller price tag. Across the board, accommodations typically start around $50 USD per night for dorm-style and around $300 USD per night for a private double room. 

Hike your heart out

Fiji’s coastline tends to steal the show when it comes to tourism brochures, but there are plenty of reasons to pack a pair of hiking shoes and head inland. Trek across Viti Levu on a multi-day hike with  Joji Tamani Adventures (you can book a tour by messaging him through Facebook), led by one of the course-setters for  Eco-Challenge Fiji: The World’s Toughest Race , eating and sleeping in village homes along the way. Also on Viti Levu, you can hike Mount Tomanivi, Fiji’s highest point at 4,344 feet, or go for a more casual stroll at the  Garden of the Sleeping Giant , home to around 40 species of orchids. 

Sir Edmund Hillary, who was the first to summit Mount Everest along with Tenzing Norgay in 1953, failed to summit the volcanic plug of Joske’s Thumb west of Suva in the 1940s after getting lost and turning back due to poor conditions. After summiting Everest, Hillary returned to Fiji in 1983 to finish the job. Follow in his footsteps, and trek to the knuckle of Joske’s Thumb; this lookout point below the summit is reachable with a guide and does not require professional training. 

On Taveuni, hike along coastal trails to hidden waterfalls, and search for the rare Tagimoucia flower, which only grows on this island. Fijian legend states these crimson and white flowers grew where a princess’s tears once fell. To punish the princess’s father for forcing her into an arranged marriage, the petals do not have a scent. 

Come sail away

Fiji became inhabited around 3,500 years ago, in 1500 BC, with settlers arriving from other Pacific Islands by wooden double-hulled canoes called druas. The drua has become an emblem of the islands, with logos, sports teams, and museums dedicated to its legacy. 

Druas and sailing artifacts can be seen at the Fiji Museum in Suva. You can occasionally see a replica drua sailing around the islands today as part of the Uto Ni Yalo Trust. (Contact  Finding Islands Tours if you’d like to sail on the drua yourself.) Many resorts also have small replica druas and Hobie catamarans for rent. 

For a modern sailing experience, go on a day tour around the Mamanuca Islands onboard the 78-foot catamaran  Sabre , or charter a sailboat with  Charter Yachts Fiji to experience many of Fiji’s otherwise-unreachable islands from the water. If you don’t have a captain’s license, you can charter a sailboat complete with captain and crew. Sailboats are able to anchor at most islands in Fiji, though it’s customary to offer a bundle of yaqona (kava) and ask the nearest village for permission to stay. 

Good to know

Is fiji expensive .

While it’s possible to do Fiji on a budget, it’s generally an expensive place to visit. Accommodations range from basic hostels for around $10 per night to private island resorts starting at $1,000 per night. Most three-star resorts will cost around $250 per night. 

Meals at hotels run around $20, though you can find great eats in the cities and villages for $5–$10. Be sure to look beyond the room rates, as many accommodations require transport and meal plans, not included in the price of your nightly rate. 

Activities and excursions are expensive, but packing your own hiking and snorkeling gear can help you save on rental fees. 

If you’re on a strict budget, stay on Viti Levu, which has the widest range of accommodations, public transport, and food offerings.

Best time to visit Fiji

May to October is outside of cyclone season, and the temperature tends to be in the mid-80s (F). 

June to September is the high season, and prices tend to climb. However, crowds are generally not bad even in peak season, as most accommodations are spread out among the islands. 

From November to April, Fiji is prone to cyclones, and temperatures are at their highest. This is a time to save on accommodation. Rainstorms usually pass quickly (as long as there is no cyclone). 

What languages are spoken in Fiji?

The main languages spoken in Fiji are English, Fijian, and Fiji Hindi. While Fijians speak their local language at home (dialects range from island group to island group, and 40% of the population speaks Fiji Hindi at home), nearly everyone speaks and understands English. English is the language used in tourism no matter where you go. Even the most remote islands will have people on them who are happy to help in English.

Fiji with kids

Fiji is a wonderful destination for families. Infants and children are welcome, in general, in Fijian society—it’s even common for Fijians to offer to hold or entertain your child while you eat at a restaurant.

Most large resorts have extensive kids clubs with cultural activities, art workshops, and kid-friendly pools; adult-only sections of resorts and adult-only resorts are also common. Kids have plenty of activities, such as snorkeling, ziplining, sailing, and conservation programs.

Fiji public transportation

The larger the island, the better public transport tends to be. Viti Levu, the largest island, has an extensive bus system that circles the island. Taxis are affordable and easy to hail.

Public transportation to and on the outer islands is nonexistent. On most small islands, you will need to rent a car or hire a guide.

Tourist ferries run to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands. Public ferries run to other Fijian islands but take much longer than a domestic flight and are prone to being off schedule.

Private island resorts will usually arrange private flight or boat transfer.

Is Fiji safe?

Fiji is generally safe, with theft being the most common crime against tourists. Take precautions in the bigger cities, like Suva and Nadi, especially after dark, where intoxicated tourists may be targeted for theft.

Fiji ranks #35 with a score of 68/100 for LGBTQ+ equality, according to Equaldex's LGBT Equality Index . Fijian society generally has mixed attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community, with cities like Suva and Nadi being more accepting. Fiji is generally quite conservative when it comes to any public displays of affection, especially with members of the LGBTQ+ community.

What To Expect On The Fiji Shark Dive
