Recent tour reviews

I was blessed with the opportunity to see Nasir, DMX and Lil Kim @ the Colliseum (WVU Mountaineers basketball court)in Morgantown,WV... I was right up in front row at center stage to hear one of my Top 5 favorite Hip-Hop artists and it was GREAT! Didn't care much for Lil Kim but Nasir and X made the show worth it. I got the opportunity to throw my demo up to Nas and it was taken backstage... I just wonder if he ever took the time to listen to it... Definitely a memorable concert for me

Not a fan of the venue (United Center). Nas requires a smaller venue bc his lyrics, not his energy, take precedence. The UC is for a mega popstar with a large gross allegiant fanbase (e.g. Taylor Swift, Kanye West). There's no intimacy amongst fans at the UC, either. Overall, it's a terrible place for most artists.

Nas is my favorite rapper hands down. Id love for him to perform fan hits, not billboard hits. I wish he were as daring a performer as he is a rapper. Most Nas fans dont like "Hate Me Now" or "I Know I Can" but bc theyre his biggest singles, they'll be played instead of "The Rise and Fall", or "Take It In Blood", "Blaze a 50" or how about "Wanna Play Rough?". Maybe Chicago's an awful city for an artist. It's ironic that Nas's fearless lyrics and depth of content is suppressed by his entertaining stage presence fueled by the need for "Mass Appeal".

This was one of the most epic events I've EVER attended! Nas by himself is enough! But, couple this legendary icon with the infamous Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Wallah, magic has taken place! He performed his 1st album with the Symphony in chronological order which was so melodic. Then once he finished illmatic the symphony cleared the stage and gave a helluva encore by performing all his mainstream hits and even a couple of his newer tracks from Nasir ( his newest album to date). To say I was pleased is an understatement! I was enthralled!!! Nas will forever be a class act in my eyes!

About Wu-Tang Clan

Founded in New York City’s Staten Island in the early 1990s, the Wu-Tang Clan is comprised of members RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Cappadonna, and the deceased Ol’ Dirty Bastard (ODB). Their name is a reference to a 1983 martial arts film.

Led by the production of RZA, samples from martial arts films have thematically appeared throughout the group’s music, as have samples of classic funk and soul tracks from artists like Rick James, James Brown, and Syl Johnson. As a group, Wu-Tang Clan have three platinum albums among their eight LPs, and the group’s complete anthology (including solo albums) has more than 85 full-length releases. More than just rappers, Wu-Tang Clan are entrepreneurs and successful cultural influencers, with an empire that features everything from clothing lines and video games to books and acting credits.

Wu-Tang Clan on Tour

Considered by many to be the greatest hip-hop group of all time, Wu-Tang Clan have been touring as a unit since their debut record — Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) — came out in 1993. The now triple-platinum release vaulted the New York City group with songs like “C.R.E.A.M.” (Cash Rules Everything Around Me) and “Protect Ya Neck” that are about as recognizable as anything in the rap canon.

Their live sets are a family affair, with every member of the crew representing their lyrical contributions to the Wu’s eight studio albums, as well as notable cuts from the Wu-Tang solo discography. With the omnipresent Wu-Tang “W” flanking all angles of the stage, there’s a familiarity to Wu-Tang Clan’s music that gives their shows unique mass appeal.

Whether they’re delivering the 36 Chambers record front to back on the album’s 25th Anniversary Tour, or tracks from GZA’s seminal Liquid Swords and Raekwon’s mafioso-minded Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, or honoring the legacy of their departed brother, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, every Wu-Tang Clan show is a celebration of prolific careers as individuals and especially as the most storied group in hip-hop history.

Nas (Nasir Jones) first reached an international audience when his track “Halftime” was tapped by producer MC Serch as the opening cut on 1992’s Zebrahead movie soundtrack. Signed to Columbia Records, the first full-length album by poet and rhyme-master Nas arrived in 1994, Illmatic . The RIAA platinum hip-hop landmark featured “It Ain’t Hard To Tell,” “The World Is Yours,” and “One.” 1996 brought the breakthrough double-platinum It Was Written (#1 R&B for 7 weeks, #1 pop for 4 weeks), with his first major crossover singles “Street Dreams” and “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That).” Success continued with the double-platinum I Am in 1999 (again #1 pop and #1 R&B), with the chart singles “Nas Is Like,” “Hate Me Now” (featuring Puff Daddy), and “You Won’t See Me Tonight” (featuring Aaliyah).

Subsequent albums by Nas included: the RIAA platinum Nastradamus  (1999, #2 R&B, #7 pop, with “Nastradamus” and “You Owe Me,” featuring Ginuwine); the platinum Stillmatic  (2001, #1 R&B, #5 pop, with “Got Ur Self A…,” “ “One Mic,” and “Rule”); the platinum God’sSon  (2002, #1 R&B, with huge R&B/pop crossover hits “Made You Look” and “I Can”); and the platinum double-CD Street’s Disciple  (2004, #2 R&B, #5 pop, with “Bridging the Gap” and “Just a Moment”). And his 2012 album, Life Is Good  earned him 4 Grammy nominations including Rap Album of the Year and is certified RIAA gold.

Over the years, Nas has also been the featured guest on a number of crossover hits by other artists, among them: Allure (“Head Over Heels,” 1997); Missy Elliott (the #1 “Hot Boyz,” 1999); fellow Queensbridge rapper Mobb Deep (“It’s Mine,” 1999); Jagged Edge (“I Got It 2,” 2002); J-Lo (“I’m Gonna Be Alright,” 2002); Kanye West (“Classic (Better Than I’ve Ever Been),” 2006); DJ Khaled (“Nas Album Done,” 2016); Swizz Beats (“Echo,” 2018); Jhene Aiko (“10K Hours,” 2020) and others.

In August 2020, Nas released King’s Disease . King’s Disease  marked Nas’ first new album in 2 years. The album was entirely produced by Hit-Boy, and Gabriel “G Code” Zardes serves as the albums co-executive producer. The album won “Best Rap Album” at the 2021 GRAMMYs, marking Nas’ first ever GRAMMY win.

In August of 2021, Nas released King’s Disease II , a sequel to the GRAMMY Award winning album. King’s Disease II was executive produced by Nas and Hit-Boy and features collaborations with Eminem, EPMD, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, YG, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Hit-Boy & more. The album earned a nomination for “Best Rap Album” at the upcoming 64th GRAMMY Awards. Most recently, Nas released a surprise album titled Magic featuring A$AP Rocky and DJ Premier.

In addition to his successful career in music, Nas has pursued a career in motion pictures that began with his co-starring role (alongside DMX) in 1998’s cult classic crime drama Belly , a film by director Hype Williams (with whom Nas has done several music videos). Most recently, he was the executive producer of the 2016 Netflix series.

The Get Down .

Nas is also the co-founder of Mass Appeal Records.

Whether they're delivering the 36 Chambers record front to back on the album's 25th Anniversary Tour, or tracks from GZA's seminal Liquid Swords and Raekwon's mafioso-minded Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..., or honoring the legacy of their departed brother, Ol' Dirty Bastard, every Wu-Tang Clan show is a celebration of prolific careers as individuals and especially as the most storied group in hip-hop history.

ABOUT NAS  Nas (Nasir Jones) first reached an international audience when his track “Halftime” was tapped by producer MC Serch as the opening cut on 1992’s Zebrahead movie soundtrack.  Signed to Columbia Records, the first full-length album by poet and rhyme-master Nas arrived in 1994, Illmatic.

Subsequent albums by Nas included: the RIAA platinum Nastradamus (1999, #2 R&B, #7 pop, with “Nastradamus” and “You Owe Me,” featuring Ginuwine); the platinum Stillmatic (2001, #1 R&B, #5 pop, with “Got Ur Self A…,” “ “One Mic,” and “Rule”); the platinum God’s Son (2002, #1 R&B, with huge R&B/pop crossover hits “Made You Look” and “I Can”); and the platinum double-CD Street’s Disciple (2004, #2 R&B, #5 pop, with “Bridging the Gap” and “Just a Moment”).

In August 2020, Nas released King’s Disease.

In August of 2021, Nas released King’s Disease II, a sequel to the GRAMMY Award winning album.

In addition to his successful career in music, Nas has pursued a career in motion pictures that began with his co-starring role (alongside DMX) in 1998’s cult classic crime drama Belly, a film by director Hype Williams (with whom Nas has done several music videos). Most recently, he was the executive producer of the 2016 Netflix series The Get Down.

Nas is also the co-founder of Mass Appeal Records.

The New York State of Mind Tour Proves That Rap’s Forefathers Are Here to Stay

  • By Andre Gee

“30 years,” Busta Rhymes growled to thunderous applause near the end of his set at last night’s New York State of Mind Tour at Newark’s Prudential Center. “Leaders of the New School’s first album came out in 1991. I’ve been brothers with Nas and Wu-Tang for 30 years. Camaraderie for 30 years, brotherhood for 30 years, same code of ethics for 30 years … reppin’ this hip-hop shit for real, for 30 years.”

The hip-hop legends performed for a mixed-age crowd that spanned from young millennials to boomers who likely remember buying Leaders of the New School’s first album back in 1991. While standing on the show’s elevated stage, looking over the crowd, RZA, the abbot of the Wu-Tang Clan, introduced the show after an incredible record-scratching exhibition by DJ Scratch. He told the crowd that the New York State of Mind Tour was a reference to New York, and specifically to the Bronx, the birthplace of hip-hop.

During Wu-Tang, Nas, and Busta Rhymes’ roughly two-hour tour through their vast catalogs, there were no signs of generational fracture. Everyone — including 52-year-old Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who RZA announced had extended the show past its 11:00 p.m. curfew — was on the same page. The mayor of the city across the river from Newark should take note.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

The show ran in relay-race fashion, with interspersed collaborations being strategically used to bring the next man out. Wu opened the show, then Nas did his set, then Busta Rhymes performed, then Nas again, then Wu-Tang closed. This allowed the audience to get their fill from each act without feeling like any artist upstaged the other. Nas’ initial set was solid, as the weight of beloved songs would have kept the crowd engaged no matter how he performed.

Rick Ross' Drake Diss Video Is Actually Self-Promo (And It's Genius)

Why is everyone beefing with drake, nas and dj premier preview long-awaited collaborative album with 'define my name'.

It’s hard to not view Nas’ pickup in energy through the Verzuz prism, where Timbaland and Swizz Beatz have rap legends throwing live volleys back and forth at each other, with each tasked to outdo the other onstage or lose the round. Most rap fans would probably say they preferred Nas’ catalog to Busta’s, but after the latter’s uproarious set, Nas knew he had to follow up and affirm his dominion over the night.

And it didn’t come out of malice, but instead from a sense of mutual respect. All of these men are pushing 50 and were reared during hip-hop’s infancy. Back then, the pipeline to rap stardom often came from wowing people with live performances. Nas’ breakout song is called “Live at the BBQ,” after all. Nowadays, a timid MC can record a song in their bedroom and get signed without ever hitting a stage — which is beautiful, but also omits the rite of passage that Nas rapped about on “Halftime,” which he regrettably didn’t perform last night.

“Back in ’83, I was an MC sparking/But I was too scared to grab the mic’s in the park and/Kick my little raps ’cause I thought niggas wouldn’t understand,” Nas raps on the 1992 single. “And now in every jam, I’m the fucking man.”

These days, rap festivals feel can feel like a cog in the backing-vocal industrial complex. A dwindling number of new acts feel representative of a time when it was understood that “MC means move the crowd,” as Rakim famously noted.

Billie Eilish Would Like to Reintroduce Herself

Kristi noem describes executing puppy she 'hated' in new book, kanye west announces 'yeezy porn' amid reports of adult film company, ellen degeneres addresses ‘getting kicked out of show business’ on her new comedy tour: ‘it’s been a toll on my ego’.

Method Man wasn’t the only surprise appearance of the night: He brought out his partner-in-rhyme and son of New Jersey, Redman, to perform “Blackout.” The moment would have been more exciting only if the newly-licensed skydiver had rapelled from the rafters. Meth called him the 11th member of the Clan, meaning the whole crew was in the building and onstage at the end, when Busta and Nas returned to celebrate the latter’s 49th birthday. Nas then closed the show by going through all three verses of “One Mic,” which he rarely does. Perhaps he was compelled by being around his peers.

How many of today’s MCs will be able to take the stage in 2052 to boast about ripping stages for 30 years? For so many reasons, some not their fault, the number seems dishearteningly low. That’s why last night’s Prudential Center showcase was special. It was the best-case scenario for a trio of acts that started rapping before some of today’s hottest rappers were even born. Hip-hop’s fan base is growing as more fans enter middle age. There’s absolutely a lane for adult contemporary hip-hop, and arena shows for hip-hop icons. But for younger rappers, the task is to develop the catalogs, fan bases, and live shows that keep fans interested 30 years later.

It will then call at B-K in Stockholm, Sweden (24 October), Kb Hallen in Copenhagen, Denmark (25 October), the Palladium in Cologne, Germany(27 October), Fabrique in Milan, Italy (30 October) and Halle 622 in Zurich, Switzerland on 31 October.

General tickets go on sale at 10am BST on Thursday 25 April.

In a five-star review of Nas’ 2021 album King’s Disease 2 , The Independent ’s Annabel Nugent wrote: “While most of today’s prominent rappers were not yet born when a 20-year-old Nasir Jones was coming up in New York City, you’d be hard-pressed to find one that doesn’t cite his 1994 benchmark debut Illmatic as an inspiration. A wordsmith, revered elder statesman, teacher, storyteller: the legend around Nas is all-encompassing.”

Nas

Nas shifted the landscape of New York hip-hop when Illmatic hit the streets in 1994. Three decades later, Escobar is looking to party like it’s the ’90s while celebrating his iconic debut album.

With Illmatic turning 30 years old on Friday (April 19), Nas is teasing something on the horizon in honor of the seminal LP.

Nas, ‘Illmatic’ At 20: Classic Track-by-Track Review

Trending on billboard.

Giddy fans proceeded to hypothesize that a project of sorts from Preemo and Nas could be in the works with the 30th anniversary of Illmatic just days away.

“Then v.s Now. What it,” Nas teased while producers Hit-Boy and The Alchemist lent their stamp of approval in the comment section.

“Will I be vindicated after all these years,” journalist Jerry Barrow wrote while seemingly alluding to the long-talked about album between the “Represent ” collaborators.

A fan voiced: “Don’t play with my emotions like this!”

The “One Love” rapper took a stroll down memory lane earlier this week when posting a series of photos from around the time Illmatic arrived and proceeded to thank those like Preemo who played a role in the acclaimed debut.

“Grainy pictures for grainy times. I had a dream I could get my favorite producers to produce on my debut album. I knew exactly what I wanted and how it should be. But I didn’t know anyone except for Paul, so I asked him would he connect me to them all. The cool soul brother that he is helped me line it up. On April 19th we smashed shit,” he reminisced.

“Even tho the album leaked months before the release date we still are apart of music history. Thank you Large Professor (Paul) and Dj Premier who drove into the projects to pick me up a time or two. Qtip , Pete Rock , and my man from The Bridge DJ LES, and my guy AZ who was just coming up himself. And thank you to everyone involved. Friday is the albums 30th. 2 The Listeners- ONE LOVE.”

Back in 2022, Nas fueled speculation the long-awaited Preemo-Escobar joint album could still be in the works. Nas touched on the mythical project on King’s Disease 3 track “30.” “Premier album still might happen,” he raps.

Premier produced three records on Illmatic (“N.Y. State of Mind,” “Memory Lane (Sittin’ in da Park)” and “Represent”). The duo went on to team up for tracks like “Nas Is Like” and “N.Y. State of Mind Pt. II” as well as 2022’s “Beat Breaks.”

Illmatic arrived on April 19, 1994, and debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200 with 63,000 albums sold in the first week.

‘It was crazy and it was freezing’ … Lil Nas X’s tastefully pixelated Industry Baby video.

‘They’re not ashamed of their bodies’: Sean Bankhead on his raunchy dances for Beyoncé, Cardi B, Lil Nas X and more

He’s the world’s hottest choreographer, the man who cooks up steamy videos and stage shows for giants of music. But does the Atlanta star ever think he goes too far? Quite the opposite …

T his year’s Super Bowl was watched by more than 120 million people in the US, almost as many as watched the moon landings. And in the half-time show, right behind R&B superstar Usher, there was Sean Bankhead dancing. “It was a really overwhelming sensory experience,” says Bankhead. “It was hot, muggy, sweaty and it stunk like a football game.” Bankhead, 35, officially hung up his dancing shoes a few years ago to focus on choreography for the likes of Missy Elliott, Normani, Katy Perry, FKA twigs, recent Grammy winner Victoria Monét and Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion (whose 2021 Grammy performance of WAP he masterminded) but he couldn’t turn down the chance to dance with Usher, one of his childhood heroes. “I messed up so many times. We performed on the actual grass and there were chunks missing. But it was a rush.”

It has been quite a year for Bankhead so far. As well as the Super Bowl, he choreographed Lil Nas X’s controversial J Christ video, and Canadian singer Tate McRae’s performance at the Brits. “I had a baaaaall at the Brits,” he says, in his Atlanta drawl. “The Brits are way more fun than American awards shows. I had no clue! There was a huge party and everyone was drunk as hell.”

Bankhead is the man of the moment, but in some ways his style harks back to the music videos he grew up with in the 90s and 00s: Michael and Janet Jackson, Aaliyah, Britney Spears – that’s where he learned to dance, not taking a class until he was 16. “I didn’t even know what a choreographer was. I was just so enamoured by what I was watching on TV.”

‘It’s time for choreographers to be financially recognised’ … Bankhead at the 2023 MTV video music awards.

His education came from going to clubs. Snap music was big in the Atlanta hip-hop scene, catchy songs like Soulja Boy’s Crank That coming with their own dance routines. “I could call myself a switch-hitter,” he says, borrowing a baseball term for ambidextrous batting. “I went to the gay clubs and I saw ballroom culture up close. I would go to the ‘hood’ clubs and learn how to do the ‘lean wit it, rock wit it’ dance. I would go to the white clubs and thrash around like Britney and learn my pop style, then go to reggae clubs and learn how to do dancehall and Afrobeats. I would always follow the party.”

All those influences make it into his dance work, but he’s also a trained percussionist. “So I can create rhythms with my body that match the beat or create my own beat. People are like, ‘Wow! Where did that rhythm come from?’” At first making dance a career seemed impossible. At auditions, he was “a young skinny kid and back then they were looking for buff masculine dancers”. So he started posting his own choreographies on YouTube. There’s one up there entitled Beyoncé Tour Submission – Bankhead didn’t wait to be asked, he just put himself out there. “I was so hungry and ambitious. I would just create, in the hope that someone would see it.”

Ultimately, it worked. These days Bankhead works with some of music’s biggest artists, including Beyoncé. For diamond-selling rapper Cardi B , he choreographed the videos Up and Bongos, featuring Megan Thee Stallion. Both have striking dance routines but are also unapologetic flesh-fests, with curves escaping from bikinis and a lot of booty – the moves as explicit as the lyrics. Does Bankhead ever have the conversation: how sexy is too sexy?

“We don’t,” he says. “In fact, it’s usually more like, ‘I want to show more ass and I want to show more crotch.’ They are not ashamed of their bodies, they love their sexuality. And I’m right there supporting them.”

He insists that Cardi B, whose performing persona is uber-confident and a tad intimidating, is really “so sweet, so kind, the shyest person”. He says the same about himself. “I’m very reserved, very chill. But then you see my work and think, ‘He must be some fabulous diva.’”

Unapologetic flesh-fest … the video for Cardi B’s Bongos, featuring Megan Thee Stallion.

With rapper Lil Nas X, Bankhead worked on the “creatively ballsy” video for the song Industry Baby. Set in a prison, it featured a naked dance routine in the showers (tastefully pixelated). This was the final scene of a two-day shoot, on an outdoor set. “It’s crazy, it’s freezing, it’s three in the morning,” he remembers. “People were slipping and falling. I stripped down to my underwear and was jumping and screaming just to make them feel more comfortable.”

Bankhead’s got an eye for a viral moment. The #OnMyMamaChallenge he created with Victoria Monét on TikTok has had more than 150 million views. Visuals and choreography “can make or break music”, he says. So are choreographers getting enough credit? “Yes and no. It’s time for us to be financially recognised. Songwriters will get paid for the rest of their lives if they write a hit song. But choreographers don’t get any type of residual income when we create a viral dance that makes the song blow up. I get a flat fee. I could be owed millions.” Partly for that reason, Bankhead is now looking to build his own brand. He’s got plans for TV shows and fashion collaborations. You can expect to see him in front of the camera soon. If Bankhead has learned anything, it’s that nothing happens unless you put yourself out there.
