Arriving at the New York JFK Airport

New York City is served by three major airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport. John F. Kennedy International Airport, or JFK, is the primary gateway to New York City and has eight terminals that serve most major and minor airlines. Newark and LaGuardia airport are great alternatives for those seeking the fastest way into New York City. When asking for a quote on your airfare to New York, let your airline know in advance about any specific needs when boarding the aircraft and any other specific needs you may have throughout the flight. For those with specific needs, the airports offer Planemates to transport passengers between arriving or departing aircraft and the gate area.

Getting around NYC

Your flight to New York was long and tedious; now take the high-speed, eco-friendly, and affordable light-rail service that links the airports to New York City and beyond. With subways running every direction and the swarm of yellow cabs on every street, getting around the city any time of day or night is the least of your problems.

Main Attractions in NYC

What to Know About NYC Airports Before Your Next Trip

New York City has three major airports, so which should you choose? Here's everything you need to know before booking your flight.

new york city air travel

John F. Kennedy International Airport

Laguardia airport, newark liberty international airport.

The airspace above New York City is among the busiest in the world. The metro area's airport system comprises three major travel hubs — John F. Kennedy International (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), and Newark Liberty International (EWR). Deciding which to fly into or out of on your next trip depends on your airline preference, which airport you're connecting to, and where you're staying, as the airports are located in Queens and New Jersey. Crossing the city to get to an airport is no quick task, and doing so in comfort (via a cab as opposed to a train or bus) is pricey. You might want to tailor your travel plans to the airport closest to you.

Here's how to get to each airport from Manhattan, how much it costs, and more to consider before choosing between JFK, LGA, and EWR.

NYC's main airport, John F. Kennedy International, is in Queens. It's the largest and busiest of the three major airports serving the city, seeing more than 55 million passengers per year.

If you're staying in Brooklyn south of Williamsburg or in eastern Queens, JFK will be your closest airport. New York's most famous gateway is a preferred choice for many travelers because of its lounges, shops, and dining options.

Airlines and Destinations

More than 70 airlines fly in and out of JFK, and most of them are international: Singapore Airlines, Korean Air, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Air France, Finnair, and EgyptAir, to mention a few. You can catch a direct flight from JFK to cities across the world, from Buenos Aires to Reykjavik. Of course, major U.S.-based carriers American, Delta, and JetBlue use JFK as a hub. The airport's entire Terminal 5 is operated by JetBlue.

Airport Amenities

JFK is in the midst of a $19-billion renovation, which will add two new terminals and is expected to be completed in 2030. The project also includes modernizing existing terminals, which might affect hours and operations at restaurants and shops throughout. Popular places to eat are Terminal 1's Jikji Cafe for quick Asian-inspired bites, Terminal 4's Blue Point Brewing Company for a sit-down meal and beers, and an outpost of Artichoke Basille's Pizza in Terminal 5.

JFK has a Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse and lounges for Aer Lingus, Air France, Air India, Alaska Airlines, Delta, Emirates, and Lufthansa.

Getting to and From JFK

JFK is relatively easy to access on public transportation. The fastest way to get there is by taking the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to Jamaica from Penn Station in Manhattan or Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. A one-way trip costs $5 off-peak and $7 during peak hours. From Jamaica, take the AirTrain to your terminal. This airport shuttle costs $8.25 to ride to or from Jamaica or Howard Beach stations, but it's free to use between terminals.

Though not as fast, taking the subway is cheaper. Pay $2.90 to ride the E, J, or Z train to Jamaica, then transfer to the AirTrain to get to your terminal. Alternatively, take the A train to Howard Beach and catch the AirTrain from there. Traveling from Manhattan to the airport by subway takes an hour or more, depending on where you start.

Taking a taxi between JFK and anywhere in Manhattan, in either direction, costs a flat rate of $70 plus taxes, tolls, and tip. There's a $5 surcharge during peak hours. If you opt to take an Uber or a Lyft into the city instead, you can meet your driver in the pickup line outside of arrivals. Driving time between JFK and Manhattan typically takes 30 to 90 minutes, depending on traffic.

LaGuardia is the smallest of the NYC area's three major airports but has been called the most efficient in the world. It's located in Queens, about 10 miles north of JFK, and is most accessible from Queens, Manhattan's Upper East Side, the Bronx, and northern Brooklyn.

LGA is a popular option for domestic travelers. Eight carriers — United, American, Delta, Air Canada, Frontier, Southwest, Spirit, and JetBlue — fly direct to cities across the U.S., plus Canada, Aruba, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. LaGuardia is the only NYC-area stop for the Delta Shuttle, which runs to Boston, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

LaGuardia used to catch a lot of flack for its subpar facilities. Now, after a years-long renovation, LGA is broadly perceived as one of the best. Terminals B and C received a complete overhaul. After it reopened in 2020, Terminal B was even named the best new airport in the world at UNESCO's Prix Versailles awards. These terminals are where you'll find the best eats, including Shake Shack, Bubby's, Dos Toros Taqueria, Zaro's Family Bakery, and other New York favorites. Terminal C also houses the Delta lounge, the only airline lounge at LGA.

Terminal A is an outlier, better known as a piece of art and history than for its amenities. Also known as the Marine Air Terminal, this funky art deco building was once used for seaplanes and contains a spectacular WPA mural in its rotunda. The only airlines flying out of Terminal A are Spirit and Frontier.

Getting to and From LGA

There's no subway or train stop at LaGuardia Airport, so getting there on public transit includes a leg of bus travel. First, take an E, F, M, R train to Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue or the 7 to 74th St-Broadway, then hop on the free Q70-SBS LaGuardia Link , which stops at terminals B and C. There's a complimentary shuttle that will get you to Terminal A, if needed. If you're traveling to or from uptown Manhattan, the M60-SBS bus, which stops on Harlem's 125th Street outside the 4, 5, 6 line station at Lexington Avenue, is your route. A one-way trip costs $2.90.

Taking a taxi to Manhattan from the airport (or vice versa) costs about $30 to $45 plus tolls and tip. If you're traveling at rush hour, the meter will probably soar well above that price bracket. Similarly, Uber and Lyft pricing will increase during peak times. LaGuardia has designated pickup areas for rideshare services at each terminal.

Newark Liberty International serves about 44 million passengers per year. The west side is its easiest access point, but traveling between EWR and other hoods like Queens and Brooklyn can be pricey and time-consuming.

More than 30 airlines fly in and out of EWR, including more than a dozen international carriers. United claims the airport as one of its major hubs. Other airlines include American Airlines, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, British Airways, Emirates, Spirit, and TAP Air Portugal. You can get to cities like San Juan, London, Tokyo, Dubai, and Berlin on direct flights.

Each terminal has a food court, and Terminal C's is arguably the best. Order an Italian deli sandwich from Casiano's, dim sum from Wabi Sabi, or ramen from Kaedama while you wait for your flight. At the recently renovated Terminal A, you can get a classic NYC bagel from Ess-a-Bagel or an organic chocolate chip cookie from Jersey favorite Bang Cookies.

United, British Airways, Delta, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic have lounges at EWR.

Getting to and From EWR

NJ Transit 's Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines provide transportation between midtown Manhattan and Newark Airport Station, which connects to EWR via the AirTrain. The whole trip takes about 50 minutes and costs $15.75 for a trip in either direction. The Coach USA Newark Airport Express bus service also runs between midtown Manhattan and all EWR terminals. It costs $33 for a round-trip fare or $18.70 for a one-way ticket. With minimal traffic, the journey takes about an hour.

Taxi rides between EWR and NYC can take anywhere between 30 minutes and two hours, depending on traffic. Expect to pay $50 to $70 on a taxi ride into Manhattan, and more if you're going to a further-out borough. Getting to EWR from the city by taxi typically costs $70 minimum.

Beware of surge pricing if you opt for a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft. While cabs line up at the taxi stand, rideshare drivers will scoop you up from the passenger pickup area.

A Guide to Airports Near New York City

Michael H / Getty Images

New York City is served by several airports, which makes it easier to find reasonable airfares, but it can also make planning your trip more challenging. The city's main three airports—LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens and Newark International Airport in Newark, New Jersey—make up the busiest airport system in the Americas.

Whichever airport you end up in, you should be aware of each airport's differences when you book your tickets—sometimes the cheapest ticket or the best schedule can have you flying into one airport and out of a different one. This isn't a problem unless you show up at the wrong one when it's time to go home!

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

Wally Gobetz / CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 / Flickr

  • Location: Jamaica Bay, Queens
  • Best If: You need to fly internationally or access the airport via public transit.
  • Avoid If: You don't want to spend on a pricy cab ride into Manhattan.
  • Distance to Times Square: A taxi to Times Square will take approximately 40 minutes and cost a set fare of $52, not including tolls or surcharges.

John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) is New York's largest airport with over 59 million travelers passing through in 2017. Located approximately 15 miles from midtown Manhattan, the airport offers a light-rail Airtrain that connects directly to New York's subway system.

JFK consists of eight different terminals and is the busiest international air passenger gateway into North America. The airport is hub for Delta, JetBlue, and American Airlines. Originally known as Idlewild Airport, it was renamed as a tribute to the country's 35th president.

LaGuardia Airport (LGA)

Courtesy of Port Authority of New York and New Jersey / CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 / Flickr

  • Location: Northern Queens
  • Best If: You need quick and easy access to Midtown Manhattan.
  • Avoid If: You need to access the airport via public transportation.
  • Distance to Times Square: A taxi to Times Square will take approximately 30 minutes and cost around $30, not including tolls or surcharges.

LaGuardia Airport is smaller than Kennedy Airport, but no less important, having served over 29 million passengers in 2016. Located on Flushing Bay and Bowery Bay in Queens, approximately eight miles from midtown Manhattan, LaGuardia is the closest airport to midtown Manhattan.

Many of the airport's facilities are outdated and it's been subject to frequent criticism over the past few years. A reconstruction plan was announced in 2015 and is set to be complete by 2026. New facilities will include a single terminal building with a people mover, retail space, and a new hotel.

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

Howard Kingsnorth / Getty Images

  • Location: Newark, New Jersey
  • Best If: You need a direct flight to a city not served by JFK.
  • Avoid If: The New Jersey location makes cab fare expensive to and from the airport.
  • Distance to Times Square: A taxi to Times Square will take approximately 35 minutes and cost around $60, not including tolls or surcharges.

Newark Airport is actually located in Newark, New Jersey, but it is an important travel hub for visitors to New York City and is located just 16 miles from midtown Manhattan. In 2017, Newark served more than 40 million passengers, making it the sixth-busiest airport in the U.S. The airport serves 50 carriers and is among the largest hubs for United Airlines, which is its largest tenants.

Unlike LGA, Newark Airport is also connected to the city via train. AirTrain Newark connects the terminals to the Newark Liberty International Airport Station, which is served by New Jersey Transit and provides direct rail connections to Newark Penn Station, New York Penn Station, and others.

Long Island Islip MacArthur Airport (LIMA)

  • Location: Ronkonkoma, New York
  • Best If: You're flying Southwest and staying on Long Island.
  • Avoid If: Getting into Manhattan can be time-consuming, especially during rush hour.
  • Distance to Times Square: The drive to Times Square will take approximately 90 minutes and is best arranged ahead of time through a private car service.

Located on Long Island , MacArthur Airport accommodates more than two million passengers annually. American Eagle, Frontier Airlines, and Southwest Airlines all service the airport. Orlando, Baltimore, and West Palm Beach, Fla., are the airport's top destinations.

Located 50 miles east of Manhattan, there is a shuttle service to the Long Island Railroad, which takes about 90 minutes to travel to New York City.

White Plains Westchester Airport (HPN)

aa440 / CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 / Flickr

  • Location: White Plains, New York
  • Best If: It's smaller and easier to navigate than the big New York City hubs.
  • Avoid If: Flights are limited with no international routes.

Located in Westchester, White Plains Airport accommodates over one million passengers annually. Five airlines operate from the airport, but JetBlue and Delta are the only two mainline carriers. Delta offers service to Atlanta, where passengers can connect to the carrier's many international segments.

White Plains is located 33 miles northeast of Manhattan. The Metro-North Railroad serves White Plains from New York's Grand Central Station, but a taxi is still necessary to get to the airport.

New York Stewart International Airport (SWF)

  • Location: New Windsor, New York
  • Best If: You're flying a low-cost fare on Norwegian Airlines, or another carrier.
  • Distance to Times Square: The drive to Times Square will take approximately 90 minutes.

Located in New Windsor, New York, New York Stewart International Airport accommodates nearly a million passengers annually. In 2018, the Port Authority renamed the airport, adding "New York" to its title to emphasize its proximity to the city. In recent years, the airport has grown more popular thanks to inexpensive routes to Europe on Norwegian Air Shuttle. Stewart is also serviced by Allegiant Air, American Eagle, Delta Connection, and JetBlue.

Stewart International Airport is located 60 miles north of Manhattan. While plans have been discussed to implement a light-rail connection to the airport, such a service doesn't exist yet. Passengers either must drive to the airport or take a private car service. Additionally, CoachUSA began offering bus service from Manhattan in June 2017.

Flights to New York City (NYC)

Flying into New York means you have options. Two airports, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA) are located in Queens, and a third option, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is across the Hudson in New Jersey. As part of the largest airport system in the country, all three airports have a variety of bars, restaurants, retail shops and passenger amenities including charging stations and welcome centers throughout.

SIGHTSEEING AND SHOPPING

To get the best view of the main island, start in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. While there, you’ll also find designer boutiques on Fifth Avenue as well as shopping at Barneys, Bloomingdale’s or Saks Fifth Avenue.

ART AND SHOWS

The incomparable Metropolitan Museum of Art, which boasts more than two million pieces of timeless art, is the largest art museum in the United States and a must-see. Make sure you reserve a few hours at the very least to take in even a fraction of its extensive collection. If you want to catch a Broadway show in Midtown, you can often score cheap tickets when you purchase them on the day of the actual performance. Some popular shows even offer standing-room only (SRO) tickets once the show is sold out.

TIMES SQUARE AND FOOD

For an iconic view of the Big Apple, hit up Times Square, which is located in the Broadway Theater District. Known as “the Crossroads of the World,” it’s a major center of the entertainment industry and one of the busiest pedestrian intersections in the world.

When it’s time to eat, have lunch at one of the many famous chefs’ eateries or have a quick bite (preferably a corned beef sandwich) at Katz’s Deli.

LANDMARKS AND NIGHTLIFE

Make sure you take a stroll through Central Park, one of the world’s great urban parks. It’s served as a model for many others since its design in 1858, and at 843 acres and 2.5 miles long, it’s a natural oasis in the middle of the concrete jungle.

No trip to New York City would be complete without a climb to the top of the Empire State Building. The 102-story Art Deco tower in Midtown boasts a view that’s been memorialized in classic films from King Kong to Love Affair and Sleepless in Seattle.

For a night out in a town famous for its nightlife, head downtown to one of the many chic restaurants and nightclubs in the Meatpacking District or Greenwich Village. A friendly warning: reservations are likely required.

While New York doesn’t disappoint in any season, it certainly sees its share of highs and lows depending on the time of year. Annual precipitation is relatively even throughout the year, so there’s no real rainy season to worry about. Summer-like conditions are in effect from late May through late September, with average highs ranging from 70-85°F. The city’s damp, cold winters last from December through March and see average highs ranging from 26-43°F. Spring and autumn are a little less predictable and can range from chilly to warm. Overall, the city averages 234 days annually that see some sunshine.

Which New York City Airport Is Best?

Is laguardia, jfk, or newark the best airport for your travel needs we break down each airport’s standout features, how to get to and from these new york area hubs, and where to eat and what to do when there..

New Yorkers and visitors alike are blessed with convenient air access to and from numerous points away, thanks to the fact that New York shares nonstop flights with countless major cities and smaller hubs throughout the world. And if you haven’t been to New York City in the past few years, you might be surprised to find entirely new terminals, concourses, and modernization projects that have and are continuing to completely transform the three major hubs that serve the New York City area.

Which airports serve the New York City area?

Three major airports serve the New York City area:

  • LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
  • John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

There are benefits and drawbacks to flying into and out of each of these airports from a passenger’s perspective, including the distance from Manhattan and the relative ease—or lack thereof—of getting to each. All three airports have been undergoing massive updates, including an entirely new Terminal A that recently opened at Newark , a $19 billion overhaul of JFK that will completely transform the airport in the coming years, and such significant upgrades to LaGuardia that it has evolved from the butt of the air travel jokes to winning awards for its terminal enhancements.

Here’s what travelers should know about each of the three main New York airports.

Anyone who hasn’t flown through LaGuardia in a few years, might not recognize this completely transformed New York airport.

LaGuardia Airport: The airport closest to New York City is the new front-runner

If you’re flying domestically to or from New York, LaGuardia Airport could be your best bet. Between a recent game-changing transformation and its proximity to Manhattan, LaGuardia has definitely risen in the ranks among New Yorkers as a preferred travel hub.

Located in the New York borough of Queens, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is not only the closest airport to Manhattan, but it also recently underwent substantial upgrades and now features brand-new terminals and passenger gates that have turned this former underdog (once likened to a “third-world country” facility) into an award-winning hub .

Because of its “perimeter rule,” which caps most nonstop flights to and from the airport at a distance of 1,500 miles, LaGuardia can’t be a world-class international airport on par with JFK or Newark. But for domestic flights, especially with Delta Air Lines (which has made huge investments in its LaGuardia terminal), LaGuardia should definitely be considered.

How to get to LaGuardia Airport from Manhattan

How to get to laguardia by public transportation.

Public transportation access isn’t LaGuardia’s strong suit. There is direct bus service on the Q70-SBS from the E, F, M, and R subway trains at Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Avenue or from the 7 at the 74th Street–Broadway subway station. From the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train, travelers can connect to the Q70-SBS LaGuardia Link from the Woodside station. Those riding Metro–North can transfer to the M60-SBS bus at the Harlem 125th Metro–North Station to get to LaGuardia Airport. But most tourists—hard-core budget travelers notwithstanding—will simply opt for a rideshare, taxi, or paid van service .

How to get to LaGuardia by taxi or rideshare service

The most common option is a taxi or rideshare service. It’s about a $30 to $45 taxi ride from Manhattan to the airport (and vice versa), not including tolls or tip, and it takes from around 40 minutes with no traffic up to one hour during peak hours. Thankfully, the rideshare experience has become more convenient at LaGuardia; there’s a dedicated pickup area for each terminal. Passengers call for their car and walk over to a designated parking spot to meet their driver—it works pretty well. At press time, it cost in the range of $45 to $65 for an Uber or Lyft between Manhattan and LaGuardia.

The best food and services at each terminal in LaGuardia

So why did LaGuardia have such a bad reputation? Well, up until its current transformation it was dirty, crowded, and small. Thankfully for current travelers, the airport is now much improved from its former incarnation, and passengers are benefiting from the changes. Here are some of the best ways to spend your time before your flight or during a layover at LGA.

The historic Marine Air Terminal dates back to the 1930s and is often a source of confusion for passengers. It’s a beautiful art deco–style terminal and the home to Frontier and Spirit. However, it’s on the other side of the airport from Terminal B and Terminal C and is not linked to those terminals in any way. At Terminal A, there are few noteworthy amenities. Restaurants include Cibo Express, Dunkin’, and Salotto, a fast-casual Italian outpost with pizzas, sandwiches, beer, and cocktails. At least getting to the gates through security is a breeze; Terminal A is often as quiet as a library.

The airport’s main terminal, home to American, Southwest, JetBlue, and United, among other airlines, recently completed a $4 billion overhaul that was so successful that it was dubbed the best new airport terminal globally earlier this year by aviation rankings organization Skytrax. The 1.3-million-square-foot Terminal B also received a prestigious five-star Skytrax rating. The bright and airy terminal is unrecognizable from its former cramped and decrepit digs. There’s now an impressive water fixture at the center of the terminal, along with a selection of premium airport lounges, including American Express, Air Canada, American Airlines, and United Airlines. Both Capital One and Chase will be opening their own proprietary airport lounge concepts in the coming years, to add to the existing spaces. There are plenty of decent options for food and snacks in the new space, too, including Bar Veloce, the East Village wine bar; Eli’s Essentials for bagels; Hill Country for Texas-style barbecue and fried chicken; the infamous Junior’s Cheesecake; Mulberry Street for a sit-down meal; the always reliable Shake Shack; and Sweetleaf and Beecher’s for coffee and bistro fare.

Delta’s brand-new LaGuardia hub recently completed a $4 billion overhaul that includes a vast and airy arrivals hall and a 34,000-square-foot Delta Sky Club, the largest in the Delta system, with capacity for 600 guests. When Terminal C fully reopens in 2024, it will feature 37 gates across four concourses. (Terminal D no longer exists as a separate terminal.) There is ample artwork throughout the terminal, including giant murals, sculptures, and digital art installations. And the culinary scene has received a welcome boost, notably from several New York City outposts, including Artichoke, known for its signature artichoke spinach pizza; Bubby’s for comfort food; Eggy Weggy for breakfast sandwiches; Chuko for ramen from Morimoto veterans; Essex Burger, of Lower East Side fame; H&H Bagels; and Bisoux, from the owners of Frenchette in the city.

John F. Kennedy International Airport: New York’s main international hub

John F. Kennedy International Airport, also known by its airport code JFK, is definitely the easiest way to get from the New York City area to destinations around the world due to the sheer number of nonstop flights available on major international carriers, such as British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Delta, and American. The one major airline that doesn’t fly out of JFK is United (the airline briefly returned to JFK in 2021 following a five-year hiatus, only to then pull out again in 2022); it uses Newark as its main hub. More about that below.

JFK is in the middle of a massive $19 billion overhaul of the sprawling facility. Over the course of the ambitious project, the current number of six separate terminals will shrink to four, anchored by two new complexes at either end of the airport, in what’s being billed as “one unified Kennedy Airport.” Unfortunately, the transformation means that there will be construction-related detours and potential road delays in and around the airport in the coming months and years. But it also means that a new JFK is on the way.

Modernization efforts aside, JFK is an international hub on par with other major global airports, such as London’s Heathrow Airport, Frankfurt Airport, or Dubai International Airport. And it is one of the busiest airports in the United States . Simply walking through the terminals presents a who’s who of international airlines and a potpourri of people from around the world. It makes for fascinating people-watching.

How to get to JFK from Manhattan

How to get to jfk by public transportation.

In early 2023, a new Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) terminal annex, named Grand Central Madison, opened at New York City’s Grand Central Terminal , finally making it possible to get from the centrally located Manhattan train station to JFK via train. Previously, the only LIRR option to JFK from Manhattan was out of Pennsylvania Station, farther west, which is also an option. The new LIRR train service runs seven days a week between the Grand Central Madison terminal and the Jamaica stop in Queens, where travelers can transfer to JFK’s AirTrain. A train ticket between Grand Central and Jamaica costs between $7.75 and $10.75, depending on peak or off-peak times. JFK’s AirTrain is $8 for those starting or ending their journey at the Jamaica stop.

Alternatively, travelers can also take the A subway line out to the Howard Beach–JFK Airport stop and then connect to the AirTrain. But this will be about 45 minutes longer and makes at least a dozen stops between JFK and Manhattan. Our advice is to take the LIRR if you’re keen on using public transportation.

Note that, due to ongoing construction until late 2023 or early 2024, the AirTrain’s Terminal 1 station is temporarily closed ; instead, a shuttle bus is transferring passengers to and from Terminal 4 and Terminal 8, where they can pick up the AirTrain, which will add some time to the journey.

How to get to JFK by taxi or rideshare service

Traveling by car highlights the biggest drawback of JFK; it is 15–20 miles outside Manhattan, which wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for the all-too-common traffic along the way. And you can definitely expect to hit some unless you’re going to or from the airport after 10 p.m. at night or early in the morning before 7 a.m. When there is no traffic, the drive is about 45 minutes, but during most of the day and evening, passengers should figure on a 75- to 90-minute car ride to or from Manhattan. The flat rate taxi fare from JFK to Manhattan via a classic yellow cab is $70 (if you include the surcharge that is added during peak periods, it’s $75), not including tolls and tips. From Manhattan to JFK, however, you’re paying whatever the meter indicates for a 90-minute trip plus tolls and tip, which could set you back considerably more.

Rideshares via Uber and Lyft can be a bit less pricey in off-hours but also are subject to peak pricing surcharges, which can push the tab to over $100.

Those flying JetBlue out of Terminal 5 should note that due to the construction at Terminal 6 next door, which could last months, the taxi stand has been moved farther from the main facility to the ground level of the Yellow parking garage, and rideshare services have been relocated to the roof of the Orange garage, one AirTrain stop away at Terminal 7.

How to get to JFK by car

If you’re driving your own car, there are plenty of spots in long-term parking lots with a maximum fee of $20 a day versus up to $42 a day to park in short-term lots closer to the terminals. You can check how full the lots are before leaving home, or plan ahead and prebook parking online . All on-airport parking lots, including long-term, are connected to terminals via the free JFK AirTrain. If you’re going by road, try to time your departure to avoid the worst of the rush hour traffic—typically from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.

How to get to JFK by paid van service

There is a smattering of van services between JFK and Manhattan, a great way to save money but not time. Airlink NYC and ETS Airport Shuttle are two of the main van services authorized to operate on-site at JFK. Fares start at $40 one-way between JFK and the Grand Central train station in midtown Manhattan, which is a good deal, particularly if you have a lot of luggage and don’t mind sharing a ride and experiencing multiple stops at various hotel drop-offs or pickups along the route.

How to get to JFK by helicopter

The absolute fastest way is via Uber or Blade helicopter service , which spends about 10 minutes in the air flying between a helicopter pad in Manhattan and a private terminal at JFK. It starts at about $200 for an Instagram-ready seat. When you factor in surge pricing for rideshare service, this actually isn’t that bad of a deal.

The food and services at each terminal in JFK

Depending on which terminal you’re in, you’ll either have ample options or pretty slim pickings for things to do before your flight or during a layover. JFK consists of a (sometimes confusing) set of six terminals, numbered 1 through 8—terminals 3 and 6, built by Pan Am and National Airlines, respectively, were demolished a decade ago. Here is a breakdown of what to expect in every terminal, each of which has its own distinct features and design.

The main airline tenants in Terminal 1 are Air France, Japan Airlines, Korean, Lufthansa, and Turkish. So, it’s not surprising the duty-free shopping is first rate, with brands like Bulgari and Cartier on offer. If you can gain access, the T1 airline lounges provide a posh place to escape for business- or first-class passengers. Otherwise, there’s also a Primeclass lounge for Priority Pass members. The dining is mostly fast food, but some reliable options include the Local, which serves American standards like burgers and pizza; Martini Bar for a preflight cocktail; Eat & Go Istanbul for Turkish fare; and JikJi Café with a Korean and Japanese menu.

Delta is the only airline operating here and given that the airline is slated to move all of its operations to the larger Terminal 4 next door in the near future, the amenities are modest—a few fast-food venues, a Starbucks, and some convenience stores. At least there is a Delta Sky Club.

This terminal no longer exists—it was demolished. The same goes for Terminal 6.

The vast and airy newer Terminal 4 space boasts dozens of high-end shops and restaurants, lounges, and even a valuable private art collection. International airlines ranging from Air India to Emirates and Virgin Atlantic operate from this terminal alongside Delta (with a new Delta Sky Club ), which flies both domestic and foreign flights from here. In Terminal 4, travelers will find cult fast-casual burger joint Shake Shack, the Palm Bar & Grille serving hearty steakhouse fare, and wine bar Le Grand Comptoir.

This terminal has a modern design, and it’s JetBlue’s home. There’s a Ron Jon Surf Shop (purveyor of swimwear and resort apparel), sports souvenirs at WFAN 66, and two bookstores—Heritage Books and WhereTraveler. The above-average food court in the airy central plaza is an attractive option for quick to-go grub; for sit-down restaurants, you can opt for 5ive Steak, for steaks, burgers, and sandwiches; Japanese spot Deep Blue Sushi; or AeroNuova, for Italian pastas and meatball sandwiches.

The first JFK terminal to be anchored by a foreign airline, British Airways, Terminal 7 is also home to Air Canada, Alaska, Condor, Iberia, Icelandair, Norse Atlantic Airways, and Scandinavian Airlines, among several others. Lounges here include BA’s first-class Concorde room with a champagne bar plus a business-class lounge. There’s also Alaska’s stylish refuge with food and beverage offerings inspired by its Pacific Northwest roots. The rest of the terminal’s food choices are decidedly less inspiring, with a Dunkin’, Le Grand Comptoir wine bar, and True Burger for those seeking a preflight bite.

American Airlines and Oneworld partners like Finnair are the main tenants here. American Airlines’ Flagship Lounge and Admirals Club are available for club members and premium passengers. Head to Bobby Van’s, a New York–style wood-paneled steakhouse that also offers a wide array of sandwiches and salads and the best sit-down dining option in the terminal.

JFK’s TWA Hotel

One of the buzziest features of JFK is the throwback glamour of the TWA Hotel , which first opened in 2019 . The formerly abandoned midcentury terminal turned hotel is near JetBlue’s Terminal 5. It sports a rooftop pool with runway view, a cocktail lounge inside a restored Lockheed Constellation L-1649A airplane (aka “Connie”), a sprawling sunken lounge that was restored to its original 1962 glory, and the Paris Café, a restaurant by Jean-Georges Vongerichten (who has Michelin cred and is behind Jean-Georges and ABC Kitchen in Manhattan). The TWA Hotel is like stepping back in time and is worth popping into for a meal or a drink or staying overnight in the midcentury-inspired rooms if you need a place to crash before or after your flight. We’d take hanging out at the TWA Hotel over many lounge experiences at JFK.

A brand-new, sparkling Terminal A is now open at Newark.

Newark Liberty International Airport: United’s main New York City area digs

If you’re flying with United or a United partner airline, you’ll be flying out of Newark, which is the main hub for United Airlines in the New York area. But there are other reasons to consider this airport. It’s not that difficult to reach with public transportation, as detailed below, and it offers a fair amount of international service, minus some of the chaos of the more popular international hub JFK. Sure, security lines can get pretty long during peak travel times at Newark, too. But 43.6 million passengers traveled through Newark in 2022, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, compared with the 55.3 million passengers who traveled through JFK during the same period. So, getting through Newark is usually a bit easier.

Newark Liberty International Airport has also recently benefited from some major renovations, namely a completely reborn Terminal A , which opened in early 2023. The much-needed new terminal, with its high ceilings and light-filled concourses, is a welcome departure from its dowdy predecessor, which has a date with a wrecking ball in the near future. The spacious gate areas now feature colorful artworks, 60 percent more seating capacity, and charging stations at each gate, among numerous other upgrades. Newark also has plans to upgrade its entire AirTrain system for getting around the airport.

How to get to the Newark airport from Manhattan

How to get to newark by public transportation.

Travel to Newark by train is quite good by New York standards. From New York’s Penn Station, you can get to Newark Liberty International Airport Station with a New Jersey Transit train. It’s about a 25-minute trip and costs about $15 per person. Unfortunately, you can’t use a Metrocard or other MTA passes on NJ Transit trains. You then transfer to the free AirTrain, which stops at each terminal. The entire trip from Manhattan is about one hour, including transit to New York’s Penn Station.

How to get to Newark by shuttle service

Airlink NYC and ETS Airport Shuttle are among the companies that operate shuttles between Manhattan and Newark, with rates starting at around $40 per person.

How to get to Newark by taxi or rideshare

Over the past few years, United Airlines has been trumpeting that it is actually much faster to get from Manhattan to Newark than to JFK. (The airline used real-time taxi data in a creative campaign.) And it’s true. A ride to or from Newark is typically between 30 minutes and one hour. That said, taxi rides and rideshare services to Newark are expensive. Your fare from Manhattan can run upwards of $100, plus a surcharge and a charge for the return tolls paid by the taxi. That can add up.

The food and services at each terminal in Newark

This new $2.7 billion facility is expected to be able to handle nearly 14 million passengers annually (the previous terminal was designed to handle 9 million), with 33 gates spread out over 1 million square feet. Airlines operating here include Air Canada, American, Delta, JetBlue, and United. In the new space, a central rotunda features a food court and a cluster of digital towers that honor important figures in New Jersey’s history. Concessions include locally themed eateries like New Jersey Mike’s Subs; Playa Bowls, which serves açai and poke bowls, smoothies, and juices; and Jersey & Co. Gelato, alongside popular national brands like Shake Shack and Starbucks. The ample retail stores feature major brands like Boss, MAC, Kiehl’s, and Tumi. There are also several play areas for children, and four airport lounges: an American Admirals Club, a Delta Sky Club, a United Club, and an American Express Centurion Lounge.

This is the main international terminal—except for United flights. It has lounges for Delta, British Airways, and other international carriers, or head to Malone’s Fish Market for healthy options, such as fish and a selection of salads, or Sora Japanese Cuisine & Sushi Bar, which has decent ramen.

This is the home of United Airlines and offers some of the best food options at Newark. For example, the sushi restaurant Tsukiji Fishroom serves fish that comes directly from Japan a few times per week. There’s a wood-burning grill at the terminal’s Daily restaurant (that’s its name), which has a menu that changes—you guessed it—daily. There’s an Eggy Weggy for breakfast standards that transitions into a Custom Burger at night. Garden State Diner offers up a solid Jersey diner experience. A Melange Café Bakery Chocolatier features cookies and other sweets that hail from the universe of chocolatier Jacques Torres. And there are ample additional options.

Best time to travel to new york.

Visiting New York is worthwhile at any time of year, but I personally like the warm months best. Summer in New York can be very hot and humid. So, for many, the best times to visit New York is April and June, and September and October.

Spending Christmas in New York or enjoying the pre-Christmas season in New York City is also a wonderful experience.  The ice rinks are open, the city is beautifully decorated, and, if it snows, the dream vacation at wintertime is perfect!

Paying in New York

You can pay for almost everything with your credit card, even the smallest amounts. Credit cards are accepted in hotels, stores, restaurants, and bars. Don’t have one yet? Then, check out the best credit card to have in the USA here.

Best Way to Travel in New York

Finding your way around New York is quite easy, even if it doesn’t look like it at first. The streets’ checkerboard pattern makes finding your way around easy. These are the best ways to get around New York:

Metro / Subway: If you have longer distances ahead of you, then the Subway is your friend, because here you can travel really cheap. It’s easy to use! The MetroCard is available at every Subway station. You can buy single rides or the popular MetroCard for 7 days; that way you can travel for a week in New York at a fixed price. You can learn more about using the  Metrocard in New York here.

Taxi:  In New York, you can choose between the Yellow Cab and Uber. You can check out our tips and all the information you need to know in our following blog:  Taxi in New York City .

By bike: With many of the New York sightseeing passes (you can find out more about this budget tip in my New York Pass comparison ), the bike rental is included. We ourselves really love using New York’s Citi Bikes. This city bike program has over 1,000 stations throughout New York City, and it’s super-cheap. We’ll show you how it works in the Citi Bike New York article.

On Foot: You’ll be surprised how much walking you’ll do in New York. After all, there’s something to see on every corner. So be sure to bring comfortable shoes!

Where to Stay in New York?

Which neighborhood is best for you depends on several things: your interests, how close you want to be to the attractions and what your travel budget is. In the image below, I’ve drawn you my favorite neighborhoods of New York including the main attractions nearby.

And, on the subject of safety: In all of Manhattan, the Bronx , Brooklyn, and large parts of Queens, you don’t have to worry about being out and about in the evening. New York City is one of the safest cities in the world!

More than 100 hotels and over 70 neighborhoods to choose from –and after just 4 quick questions, I’ll show you which hotels in New York are best suited for you!

Where Should you Stay in New York?

where to stay in New york

Manhattan – it doesn’t get more central than this: Manhattan is the most famous borough of them all. Plus, it contains 95% of all the attractions New York is known for. Everything is within easy reach, and you are right in the middle of it all. On the other hand, the hotels are a bit more expensive than in Brooklyn or Queens .

Here, you can find my 33 hotel tips for Manhattan .

Brooklyn – urban and relaxed: For a long time, Brooklyn was the insider’s tip: now it’s “completely” normal neighborhoods. However, you’ll quickly notice one thing: life is much more normal, because it’s more of a residential area. It’s super relaxed, pleasant, and just as diverse as Manhattan. Above all, you can enjoy the Manhattan skyline from here!

Here, you can find my 20 hotel tips for Brooklyn .

Queens – the new trendy neighborhood: Queens is a bit more “normal” than Brooklyn is, but, lately, we’ve noticed that it is getting more and more gentrified. The hotels in Long Island City (not to be confused with Long Island!) are especially popular because they are cheaper compared to Manhattan—and they have a perfect connection to the Subway, which makes Queens a great alternative to Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Here, you can find my 20 hotel tips for Queens .

What to See in New York?

One thing to know in advance: just because there is so much to see in New York, a little planning makes absolute sense. For highlights like the Empire State Building ( here ), the Edge Hudson Yards observation deck ( here ) or the One World Observatory ( here ), I recommend buying the tickets online in advance. This will not only save you waiting time on site, but you can also be sure that you will actually be able to visit your desired sights.

👉 These are our 33 best attractions in New York .

These are my tips after more than 20 visits to New York:

  • Observation decks:  New York City has no less than five (!) major observation decks to offer, and each one is a dream in itself. My two favorites are The Edge Hudson Yards and the One World Observatory , because from here you have a sensational view of New York from above and you can see the Empire State Building . From the end of 2021, another cool option will be added with the glass One Vanderbilt . One more thing about the Empire State Building: It’s the most visited observation deck in New York, so it’s always busy. Avoid the crowds in the morning – and if you really want to go to the Empire State Building in the evening, choose Thursday, Friday or Saturday. During those times, a saxophonist plays on the observation deck. Important: book the Skip-the-Line-Tickets (you can do that here). Then, you can easily save 1-2 hours of waiting time!
  • Visit the Statue of Liberty : The trip from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty is super-popular. To save yourself long waiting times, make sure you take the first ferry of the day. Here, you can find the best Statue of Liberty Cruises right now.
  • Definitely take a boat tour , because seeing New York from the water is like being on vacation. Choices range from the free Staten Island Ferry or the NYC Ferry ($2.90 each way) to sailing tours (gorgeous) and the classic sightseeing tours that are included with all major New York passes.
  • Walk along the High Line from the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards .
  • Visit Times Square in the evening – that’s when it’s at its most impressive.
  • Relax in Central Park or Bryant Park .
  • Plan a maximum of three attractions per day . After all, you don’t want any sightseeing stress.

What to Do in New York?

For me, an unforgettable New York trip includes the following things in addition to visiting the main sights:

Go Shopping

New York is also really good for shopping. There are many small shopping spots and addresses, but also the big brands can often be found with flagship stores. If that’s not enough, you can go shopping in one of the outlets and flea markets of New York.

The best shopping areas in New York are Broadway, SoHo , Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. And, of course, 5th Avenue!

Avoid Times Square for shopping!

A real tourist trap are the stores around Times Square – they are not only overpriced, but also the quality is not right in most cases!

Here you can find our Guide to Shopping in New York  with everything you need to know!

Visit a rooftop bar.

I love the rooftop bars of New York . You can sit and relax, enjoy a sensational view of the city and listen to relaxing music. All this mixes with the so-typical sounds of the city in the background, and if you have something delicious to drink or eat on top of that, it can’t get any better! Visit a Broadway Show

New York is known for its many musicals and Broadway shows – most of which are performed in the Theatre District around Times Square. Here are our tips on the  best Broadway Shows in New York . If you already know which Broadway show you want to see, I recommend ordering the tickets in advance ( here ). If you’re still flexible, you can buy leftover tickets at TKTS in Times Square, for example.

Attend a Parade or Special Event

OK, hotel is booked, attractions are on the list, the myNY itinerary is ready, shopping spots are sighted and the first restaurants and bars are also noted. Now comes the last step on the list to the perfect travel planning for New York: the events, parades, and holidays.

They are the icing on the cake of every New York vacation and, therefore, could not be missed in our New York Travel Guide! Just check out our monthly specials that are relevant to you:  January , February , March , April , May , June , July , August , September , October , November and December .

FAA Efforts to Keep Air Travel Safe, Smooth in NYC This Summer

The FAA is taking several steps to keep air travel to and from New York City this summer safe and smooth, even as we see strong domestic demand and a return of pre-pandemic international traffic.   To help prevent disruptions, the agency will give airlines flexibility on slot usage requirements. In turn, the FAA expects airlines to take actions minimizing impacts on passengers, including operating larger aircraft to transport more passengers and making sure passengers are fully informed about any possible disruptions.   Late this month, the FAA will convene a New York airspace summit with airlines and others to discuss additional ways to improve the country's most complex and congested airspace. The summit will be similar to the one hosted in Florida last year that resulted in measures to improve efficiency in another high-demand area.   Although the FAA continues to reduce the air traffic controller training backlog at many FAA air traffic facilities, staffing levels at the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control (N90) continue to be below targets. To maintain safety and meet demand, the agency later this year will reassign the approximately 100 square miles of Newark airspace from N90 to the Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control.

FAA published a notice of limited, conditional waiver of the minimum usage requirement that applies to Operating Authorizations or “slots” at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) due to post-pandemic effects on Air Traffic Controller (ATC) staffing at the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility (N90). Carriers seeking to take advantage of this relief must identify the slots and approved operating timings they wish to turn in before April 30, 2023.  Read the full notice and associated waiver requests from airlines.

The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks

A person standing outside in a light blue short sleeve shirt wears the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L backpack, in black with a gray llama-head logo and aqua accents.

By Kit Dillon

Kit Dillon is a writer focused on bags and travel gear. He has worked for Wirecutter for a decade and lost count of the number of bags he has tested.

When you open up your favorite carry-on travel backpack, it should feel like you’re opening the door to a well-organized closet or sitting down at a clean desk, with everything in the right place and easy to reach.

This is your moment to center yourself, no matter how chaotic the journey.

What we considered

A 45-liter bag maximizes overhead space but can get heavy when fully packed; 35-liter bags tend to be more manageable.

A bag with a clamshell design opens like a book and is the easiest to pack, but a bag that opens traditionally tends to have more structure.

Ideally, a travel backpack has handles on all sides—especially the bottom—so you can pull it out of overhead bins or from under seats.

Some internal pockets are useful, but major organizing is better managed with packing cubes.

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack and the larger Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L offer the best combination of features, quality, and durability. Both bags are exemplary carry-on travel backpacks that are designed for comfort, durability, and organization. Though these backpacks are great as companion bags for any trip, they’re designed to ultimately replace all of your other luggage and become your exclusive bag as you travel.

This style of packing is not for everyone, but once some people try it, they’re forever hooked. Finding the right bag is a personal choice, though, and no single bag will appeal to everyone. That’s why we also have picks that are great for people who travel for work , others that are designed to be carried over long distances , and a bag that’s basically luggage on your back .

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, best small carry-on bag for most situations: cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack, best large bag for most situations: peak design travel backpack 45l, best mobile office: patagonia black hole mlc 45l, best bag for long journeys on foot: osprey farpoint 40 and fairview 40, best bag if you need a large suitcase on your back: tortuga travel backpack pro 40l, other good carry-on travel backpacks, how we picked and tested, the competition.

I’ve been covering aspects of luggage and travel bag design for Wirecutter for nearly a decade, and I have personally researched, tested, and compared hundreds of bags in that time. I personally try to do most of my travel with a single backpack, whenever possible. I spent nine months roaming around Hawaii with not much more than that, and I spent another six months nomadically couch-surfing in New York City.

I reached out to writers who specialize in traveling the world carrying everything they need in a single bag: Eytan Levy, the owner and operator of the Snarky Nomad travel website; James Feess, founder of The Savvy Backpacker ; and Sharon Gourlay, of the Where’s Sharon? travel website. I also spoke with moderators of Reddit’s r/onebag and r/heronebag forums, as well as with Chase Reeves, bag fanatic, reviewer, and owner of Matterful .

We researched and tested bags designed for those who want to travel light and stay flexible while flying, without the burden of checking luggage. For some people, the challenge of cutting down a packing list is intimidating. But if you can get past that initial hurdle, traveling with a single bag is a revelation. With fewer items, you have more time to concentrate on and appreciate the journey.

  • When you’re not loaded down by heavy luggage, it’s easy to remain more mobile. And it’s easier to adjust your plans mid-trip. If you’re willing to do laundry on the road, then one bag is all you need to travel indefinitely. At its heart, one-bag travel allows you to discover more—not just about the places you’re going but also about yourself and what you really need day to day.
  • Size and weight still matter. If you desire more creature comforts or more gear, or if you plan to be away for a long time across multiple climates, you’ll want a bigger travel backpack . These larger bags tend not to be carry-on-friendly, however, especially in Europe, so be prepared to check them.
  • No single backpack is perfect for everyone. Before you make any purchase, consider some basic points. How much can you carry? And where do you usually visit: the city or outback? Travel gear should feel like a welcome companion—there to support you when you need it but unobtrusive when you don’t.

45-liter bag vs. 35-liter bag

A graphic comparing the difference in capacity between a 45-liter and a 35-liter backpack.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L

A versatile small pack for a week or a weekend.

This durable bag’s clamshell design makes it easy to organize your stuff. And due to its strap design, this bag can be worn on your back or carried in your hand while you’re on the move.

Buying Options

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is an easy-to-organize, comfortable-to-carry bag for getaways lasting just a few days or a whole week.

It’s one bag that can do it all. This is a great all-around bag for any traveler who’s dedicated to packing light, or for a smaller person who wants less to carry. There are handles on all four sides of this bag, so it’s easy to grab no matter where you’ve stowed it. It’s also protected by a full lifetime warranty, and it has the build quality to back that up. After more than four years of testing, this single backpack (plus a personal item ) has replaced nearly every travel bag or piece of luggage I use.

It comes in various sizes, but we think the middle-of-the-road version is the best. Cotopaxi also makes the Allpa in 28-liter and 42-liter sizes. But for us, the 35-liter bag is the best option. At 42 liters, this bag becomes heavy for most people to carry when it is fully packed, and we’d prefer that it had a more-robust hip belt. At 28 liters, the bag becomes a touch small for most people, and its internal organization feels fussy for shorter trips, such as an overnight. Cotopaxi also makes a hip pack , which is designed to fit snugly into the Allpa bag’s front top compartment. It’s a neat little addition to the bag, and it is worth getting if you like wearing fanny packs while you travel.

It’s organized, easy to pack, and easy to carry. The Allpa bag has a clamshell design, so it opens like a hard-sided suitcase—a large YKK zipper runs around three sides of the bag, allowing it to fall open into two halves when unzipped. On the right side is a deep compartment, spacious enough for two large packing cubes or half a suitcase’s worth of clothing (which you access through a mesh zippered flap). On the left, there’s space for one more medium-size packing cube behind a zippered flap. Above that there are two smaller pockets with high-visibility backing—useful when you’re looking for hard-to-differentiate personal items.

The packed Cotopaxi Allpa Travel Pack, shown fully open so that the contents are accessible.

It’s secure but still accessible. The Allpa pack has two side-access zippers—great for on-the-go access, especially when the bag is hanging from your shoulder. One of these reveals a flat computer pocket with a padded false bottom; so if you drop the bag, it won’t land on the corner of your computer. The other reveals a “secret” pocket with a hidden zipper and access to the main compartment. All of the main compartment zippers are protected by security loops, which you thread the zipper through at the end of its run. This prevents anyone from subtly or quickly grabbing a zipper and opening your bag when you aren’t paying attention.

It’s comfortable to carry. The Allpa bag’s hip belt—which can be removed while the bag is on your back—is substantial enough that it’s comfortable to wear when you need it. With or without the hip belt, the Allpa bag is comfortable to carry over long distances. However, folks who have longer torsos (over 19 inches) may find that the waist belt sits a little high off the hips, unless you fully extend the shoulder straps. Speaking of shoulder straps, unlike the ones on our other picks, the Allpa bag’s straps are contoured to fit people who have large or small chests. It’s not a specifically gendered design, but our female tester noticed the improvement right away.

The Allpa pack is made with 1680-denier ballistic nylon, similar to the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . (Denier is a measure of a fabric’s fiber thickness.) It feels similar to a strong canvas, but it has a more prominent weave. This is the type of bag that’s as easy to toss into an overhead compartment as it is into the back of a rusty pickup truck. And it also includes a rainfly, which is unique in this category.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Though this pack is well organized for packing, it’s less ideal as a mobile office. The Allpa pack has a minimal amount of administrative organization—places to keep pens and papers, spaces to hold tickets, and so forth. This is where a good personal item comes in handy. However, if you want to travel with just this one bag, there are a few nooks you can hide things in. The front organizer is deep enough that you can also fit several small organizing pouches, if you want, or the aforementioned fanny pack.
  • We prefer the model without the TPU front. Cotopaxi does enjoy playing around with fabrics and colors. Sometimes the company has released the Allpa pack without the TPU-lined front panel. The TPU panel improves water resistance, but after many years of traveling with our bag, we’ve found that the TPU layering can begin to flake in spots.

An easily customizable large bag for long trips and expensive gear.

This bag was built with photographers in mind. Yet most travelers will appreciate its easy accessibility, clever tuck-away straps, and the elegant way the bag expands and contracts. The accessory cubes cost extra, though.

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is a good choice for those carrying more expensive gear—especially camera gear. It’s also great for those who prefer a large, backpack-based packing system.

One bag provides many configurations. Some bags in this category are built to do one thing extremely well—be carried on your back. But the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is built to adapt. It’s the Swiss Army knife of backpacks: adjustable, customizable, and (if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers) an almost perfect system for a photographer or gearhead on the move. Most bags’ expanding mechanisms aren’t worth the extra zipper they’re built on, and they look about as attractive as a boiled ham splitting out of its plastic packaging. That’s not the case with the Peak Design: This bag looks just as good fully packed at 45 liters as it does compressed to a 30-liter daypack.

It’s expandable, with clever folds and zippers. You can access the bag through a back panel (which doubles as a computer and tablet pouch) as well as a front one (if you unzip the pass-through divider). You can also get into the main compartment via two wing-like trapezoidal flaps, which run along each side of the pack. In its natural shape, the Travel Backpack holds 35 liters, but an expansion zipper lets the bag swell to 45 liters. If you want to use the bag as a daypack, you fold in the top corners and snap them down, reducing the bag’s volume to a slim 30 liters. In this configuration, it will still feel larger than a normal daypack, but we think that’s a small compromise for being able to use one backpack as both your travel bag and your daily explorer. The bag itself consists of 400-denier nylon and polyester fabrics. It feels tough but not as tough as some other bags we’ve tested, such as the Cotopaxi Allpa.

It has fold-away straps, for easier storage. The Peak Design lets you tuck its shoulder and hip straps away when you’re not using them. But unlike any other bag we’ve ever tested, this pack has magnetic flaps on the back panel that open and close with an almost magical snap. Once you’ve played with them, you’ll wonder why every backpack doesn’t have something similar. A small, childish part of me still gets excited about tucking away the straps when I put the Peak Design into an overhead bin. Although the straps are thin, they’re still comfortable. The hip belt isn’t quite as plush as the one on the Tortuga pack; still, even when the Peak Design is fully loaded, the belt doesn’t pinch or dig into the body.

It’s great for carrying expensive gear. If you travel with a camera, you don’t have to use Peak Design’s camera cubes , but they do make carrying that gear a whole lot easier. The cubes come in five sizes. And if they’re situated properly in the bag with the provided clips, they line up with the Travel Backpack’s side-access flaps for quick access. Caleigh Waldman (a photographer for this piece and, full disclosure, my spouse) took this bag across the country for a wedding shoot. “I want this backpack,” she said after three weeks of travel. “I want to travel with it everywhere. With my cameras. Without my cameras. It doesn’t matter. I want to travel with it.”

  • It’s expensive—especially if you commit to the entire system of packing and camera cubes.
  • More complexity means more things that can break. The adjustable design and multiple zippers do add complexity, and complexity adds potential weaknesses. Peak Design covers all of its bags with a lifetime warranty , which should alleviate most people’s concerns. But if you’re particularly hard on your gear and still need to carry as much as possible, you might consider the Tortuga bag instead.

Capacity: 45 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: back-panel loader Style: minimalist and unobtrusive Color: black, sage

The Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack, is held in midair by a person wearing a plaid shirt.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L

Combines more organization with a simple interior.

This bag’s split interior makes organizing easy. Those who travel for work will appreciate this bag’s dedicated panels for organizing tech, books, papers, and assorted miscellaneous items.

If you travel often for business and prefer a bag that’s much easier to work out of than most of our other picks, you may like the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L . This bag has a front panel and assorted pockets that make it feel like a small traveling office.

It’s built like luggage but organized like your office. Of all the bags we recommend, the MLC (short for Maximum Legal Carry) comes closest to being a suitcase on your back, due to its large size, simple interior, and minimal external features. The MLC is also one of the simplest bags we tested, divided into two leaves (imagine a book with only one page), with a main compartment for packing and a second compartment for document organization and tech storage. The MLC has a built-in laptop compartment that fits 17-inch laptops and is situated close to your back; this protects the computer and keeps its weight closer to your body.

Despite its size, it’s comfortable enough to carry. Most carry-on backpacks of this size, without frames, become somewhat unwieldy when fully packed. Thankfully, the Black Hole MLC bag, like the Cotopaxi Allpa, is a welcome exception to this rule. The MLC has two shoulder straps, a hip belt, and an optional shoulder strap, for easy carrying. When they're not in use, or when you’re checking your bag, all of the straps can be stowed away easily. When fully loaded, the bag was pleasant to carry—not as comfortable as the Peak Design or the Osprey, but decent enough. I wouldn’t want to carry it all day across a city, but I wouldn’t mind carrying it through an airport to a car and to a hotel.

It’s built from high-quality materials, with durability in mind. This pack is made from recycled polyester, and the fabric is woven in a cross-weave that’s very similar to what Patagonia uses in its long-lasting Black Hole series of duffle bags . This is a material I’ve come across a bunch with Patagonia gear, and I’ve tested it thoroughly; it’s very tough. The front of the bag is coated in a weather-resistant TPU, for extra protection from the elements. The bag has large YKK zippers (the industry leader) and smaller YKK zippers throughout. Unlike the Cotopaxi Allpa pack, the Black Hole MLC bag has no security loops.

It comes with one of the best repair programs and a lifetime warranty. Similar to our other picks, the MLC is backed by an excellent lifetime warranty , and we’ve always found that Patagonia’s repair program goes above and beyond other comparable companies.

  • We wish the Maximum Legal Carry (despite the name) came in a few more sizes. The 45-liter capacity may be intimidating for some people, and there is no alternative.

Capacity: 45 liters Weight: 3 pounds 10 ounces Main compartment access: clamshell Style: retro Colors: tan, black, olive, green

The Osprey Farpoint/ Fairview 40 Travel Pack, one of our also-great picks for the best carry-on travel backpack, shown in black.

Osprey Farpoint 40

For long distances on foot.

A great starter option for one-bag travel, this bag is easy to pack, adaptable to most situations, and sturdy enough to take with you as you travel the world.

new york city air travel

Osprey Fairview 40

For long distances and smaller torsos.

A scaled-down version of the Farpoint, this bag has shoulder straps that are slightly lower, to keep the bag’s bulk more aligned with smaller torsos.

Updated in 2023, the Osprey Farpoint 40 and Fairview 40 packs are both built around a hiking backpack frame that’s easy to carry over long distances.

It’s built for travel but designed for hiking. The Farpoint 40 bag is well made, easy to pack, and comfortable to carry over most mid-length distances—such as walking across a city for an afternoon. (For simplicity’s sake, everything we say here about the Farpoint bag also applies to the Fairview bag.) Osprey makes excellent backpacks for hauling around, and its lifetime warranty is renowned within the industry . The Farpoint pack also has an optional messenger bag–style strap, which offers some flexibility when you’re maneuvering tight spaces like subways or crowded city centers.

View of the straps on the reverse of the Osprey travel backpack.

It’s simple to pack, but not as spacious as it seems. Opening the bag reveals a clamshell design; it’s deep enough to accommodate most large items, yet you won’t have to fumble awkwardly with zippers once it’s time to close up the bag. The feeling you get is not unlike when you’re packing a bit of sturdy luggage, and that’s something we love about bags like this one—especially when you use packing cubes . Osprey says this bag, when fully packed, can carry 40 liters. But after using the Farpoint bag for a few years, we’ve decided that its rounded shape seems to cut into that theoretical packable space more than other bags do. In practice, the Farpoint pack’s available space is closer to—but still less than—that of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

It’s the easiest bag to carry among our picks. Like all Osprey bags, the Farpoint 40 has very comfortable shoulder straps. The years of design and consideration Osprey has put into its hiking backpacks are quite evident in the Farpoint 40. After more than seven years of long-term testing this bag, we’re still surprised by how great it feels to wear when fully packed. Crucially, the straps of the Farpoint 40 stow away neatly behind a zippered panel. However, when you’re using the shoulder straps, the design forces you to also use the hip straps. Though this isn’t a huge issue, if you prefer a sleeker look or would rather have the option of using shoulder straps without hip straps, the Cotopaxi Allpa pack is more flexible, and it lets you hide the waist straps while the bag is on your back.

The Fairview 40 has the same features, in a scaled-down size. The Farpoint 40 and the Fairview 40 packs basically have the same design, but the Fairview pack is made for someone with a more-diminutive torso. It’s also slightly lighter. However, it has the features and durability of the Farpoint bag. It also has the same hip belt and adjustability. On both, the chest-strap clip is also equipped with a small security whistle that’s surprisingly loud. It’s a handy feature for anyone traveling in unfamiliar environments.

  • For a smaller carry-on travel backpack, this one has little to not like. However, we do wish Osprey would trade some of the sleeker contours for a little more interior space.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight (Farpoint): 3 pounds 3 ounces Weight (Fairview): 3 pounds 2 ounces Main compartment access: front-panel loader Style: active Colors (Farpoint): green (Gopher), gray (Tunnel Vision), blue (Muted Space), black Colors (Fairview): blue (Winter Night), red (Zircon), blue (Night Jungle), black

The Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L

A suitcase to carry on your back.

For dedicated single-bag travelers, this water-resistant, durable bag is easy to pack and to travel with. And it’s comfortable to wear over endless miles—as long as you don’t mind the heavier weight.

The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L maximizes packing space in a bag that’s durable, water-resistant, and customizable to fit most torso lengths (there’s also a 30L version ), with plenty of organizational features to suit any digital nomad.

It’s like a suitcase, with backpack straps. The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L is built to occupy the maximum carry-on space available. It’s a nearly perfect blend of backpack and luggage. On the outside, its tear-resistant sailcloth and sealed zippers provide ample protection from sharp objects and the elements. Opening the main clamshell zipper reveals a cavernous interior and a few organizational features that make the bag a cinch to pack. The front panel is a particular standout, great for keeping track of electronics and chargers. Of all the bags we tested, the Tortuga strikes the closest balance between the carrying comfort of a hiking backpack and the space and organization of a piece of luggage.

The Tortuga Backpack Pro shown with the front clamshell lid in the open position.

It’s as easy to pack as luggage. When it comes to packing, the Tortuga pack has a soothingly minimal interior, as any good suitcase should. In addition to the bag’s cavernous main pocket, its interior lid has a large vented panel. The panel is too narrow to hold additional packing cubes, but it’s great for holding light jackets or doubling as a dirty-laundry bag (if you’re really committed to one-bag travel). The Tortuga is available as a 40-liter pack (the maximum space for a carry-on bag), which we tested; there is also a 30-liter version, which is compliant with some intra-European flights. The more-diminutive version is a decent choice for weekend travel or for minimalist travelers—but for those uses, we prefer the space-saving profile and extra internal organization of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L bag.

It’s very customizable. The Tortuga pack is the most adjustable model we tested, thanks to its adjustable torso length, shoulder straps, and waist-belt system. The adjustable strap system lets you manipulate the location of the shoulder straps (video) to fit a wider variety of body sizes, in both the 30- and 40-liter versions. Of the packs we’ve tested, this one (with its included load-adjuster straps at the top, to prevent the bag’s weight from sagging toward your lumbar region) is the best at distributing its weight (4½ pounds when empty—roughly 1½ pounds more than most of our other picks, except the Peak Design ). The hip straps are removable if you need, but the shoulder straps are not stowable.

  • Its straps don’t stow away. Some people, especially those who are hard on their gear, may consider not being able to remove or stow the shoulder straps (as they can with our other picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa ) a disqualifying factor. But after years of testing, traveling with, and occasionally checking our bag, we haven’t had an issue. However, if these mysteries beneath the airport also make you nervous, you might prefer our picks with easy-to-stow straps, such as the Peak Design.
  • It's heavy. We’ve fielded complaints from some testers who said that older models of this bag were too heavy for them to carry, even with the padded hip belt and adjustable straps. The additional padding does add weight. At 4½ pounds, this latest Tortuga bag is more than half a pound lighter than it used to be (the difference is noticeable), and it weighs the same as the equally large Peak Design pack. We are currently testing a new, lighter, and less-expensive version of this pack—aptly named the Travel Backpack Lite 40L —and will report back soon.  In the meantime, if you think you would struggle carrying the Tortuga, we strenuously encourage you to consider one of our more-manageable picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L.

Capacity: 40 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: minimal, with a rigid construction Color: black

If you want to travel like a backpacker but also fit in at a board meeting (and you have the budget for it): Consider the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . This bag’s reputation for durability, adaptability, and a low-key aesthetic make it a favorite among many dedicated one-bag travelers. And after testing it, we think it’s a great bag too. That said, for the bag to really stand out against other backpacks—and to take full advantage of its carrying adaptability—you need to buy the internal frame , the hip belt , and (if you’re traveling with a suit or jacket) the shoulder strap . On a bag that already costs $330, all of this adds up. Everything about the Tom Bihn bag (the fabric, the zippers, the quality of construction) feels like an upgrade from other bags, but it’s simply too pricey, and its design is too rarified and specific for most people. The biggest flaw, from our perspective—apart from the price—is that the Tom Bihn bag lacks a dedicated laptop pocket. In its place, the company sells laptop sleeves (a fine version if you don’t have one) that clip into the bag’s central compartment. Not everyone needs a dedicated laptop pocket, but we prefer the more secure feeling of bags that do.

If you want a budget pick (but only when it’s on sale): The eBags Mother Lode Travel Backpack (our former budget pick) is still your best budget option, if you can catch it on sale for at least half off the list price. It’s not comfortable enough for trekking long distances on foot, but there are plenty of external pockets for organization, a laptop sleeve (which holds the weight of your computer high up on your shoulders), and an easy-to-access main compartment. This pack also has the largest capacity of any bags we tested, expanding to 65 liters—well beyond any airline’s regulated 45-liter limit. However, the bag’s casual-to-basic looks might not be to everyone’s taste. In 2024, eBags raised the price of the Mother Lode to $200. We have seen it on sale for $100, and in our opinion it’s worth getting only at the sale price.

We’ve narrowed our specifications for a great bag to the following list of features, ordered from most relevant to least:

  • Front- or back-panel loader or clamshell opening, for the main compartment: As with any good piece of luggage, with this type of bag, you should be able to open it and see everything you’ve packed. When you have a bag with a panel-loading or clamshell design—rather than a traditional, top-opening design—you can pack and unpack it just as you would a suitcase.

A graphic illustrating a clamshell bag opening

  • Backpack strap comfort and design: You never know when you’ll be walking farther with your bag than you’d intended. The more comfortable and well designed the straps are, the easier traveling will be. “Ideally, you want a bag’s shoulder straps to adjust to the angle of your shoulders,” said Eytan Levy of Snarky Nomad. “Good shoulder straps are the difference between an easy trip and a hard trip.”
  • Hip-belt comfort and design: A hip belt transfers heavy loads from your back and shoulders onto your hips, letting your legs—not your back—bear the brunt of the weight. Just having a waist belt is a plus, but having a padded and sculpted one—especially on bags with over 40 liters of volume—makes a world of difference.
  • Material quality: Durability is critical for any type of luggage, but especially for a backpack that will be your only bag. Most bags worth considering are made of nylon, which resists abrasion more than polyester fabrics of similar density. Spending more, however, can get you exotic, light, and strong materials, such as Dyneema or sailcloth.
  • Weight: Once the bags arrived, we weighed each one ourselves. Most of the bags weighed within a few pounds of one another. But unless you’re very strict with yourself, by the time you’re packed for a two-week journey, all bags are going to feel equally massive, even if one is just 2 pounds heavier than another when empty.
  • Stowable straps: These are nice to have, but they aren’t absolutely necessary. “The more often you need to check a bag, the more often you need to hide away the straps,” Levy said. “But if the straps are tough enough, it doesn’t matter.”
  • Accessory pocket layout and design: Some people will love an accessory pocket that has a specific space for everything; others may find that feature constricting and unadaptable. We prioritized bags with simple designs that guided our packing without constraining us.
  • Style: This is purely subjective. We preferred bags that had a minimalist exterior style, but not all of our picks will please everyone. Most of the people we spoke with, however, preferred not to stick out like a tourist wearing a large, colorful backpack, if they could avoid it.

During testing, we flew across the country with these bags, took weekend trips to nearby cities, lived out of them on extended trips, and tried them locally in our daily routines. We also packed and unpacked each bag, using a standardized set of weeklong travel necessities and accessories, to see how well the internal organizational features (or lack thereof) aided or got in the way of efficient packing.

This is not a comprehensive list of all of the carry-on travel backpacks we have tested. We have removed any models that have been discontinued or that no longer meet our criteria.

The Away Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L is a rare miss from the Away team. This bag is resoundingly average for the price. Although it’s made from excellent materials, the bag is let down by its overall design, which lacks any kind of structure or attention to comfort. There are better options.

The cheap, no-frills Cabin Max Metz bag is intriguing for the price. Any bag at this price should almost be considered disposable. That said, if you need a simple bag that costs less than a seat upgrade, this might be the way to go—unless you can pick up the eBags Motherlode bag for under $100, which we think is a better deal at that price.

The GeniusPack Travel Backpack is the only model we came across that tried to fit a suit into a travel backpack. Though some people might need that, we think those who have to travel with a suit (or clothes that require pressing) would be better off with a piece of carry-on luggage . GeniusPack now offers a second version of this bag, but our conclusion hasn’t changed.

For certain people, the GoRuck GR3 is almost worth the cost. It’s strong and simple and covered by an iron-clad repair guarantee. The removable hip belt is comfortable to wear, and it’s good at displacing the weight of a 45-liter backpack. This is a decent bag. After testing it, however, we weren’t thrilled with the internal Velcro lining for compatible Velcro packing cubes. Velcro isn’t great: It wears out, it’s difficult to keep clean, and it clings to dirt. That might seem like a small thing, but for the price, this bag should feel perfect.

The Minaal Carry-On 2.0 was designed to be a backpack for business people. But if you’re carrying it for business, you’re probably wearing at least a blazer, so you wouldn’t use a backpack in any case. If you’re a business traveler who falls more on the casual end of the business-casual spectrum, and you’re not on a budget, this is a well-thought-out pack. But we think our picks are more versatile for world travel, and they come at a better price. Minaal has since introduced a 3.0 version of this bag ; our thoughts about it remain the same.

The Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L is a slightly larger sibling of the Farpoint pack. The Sojourn Porter bag is about 2 inches longer, and it pushes right up to most airline limits. If you don’t mind possibly having to check your bag at the last minute, this would be an excellent alternative to the Farpoint pack.

Your guide to New York

All about new york city.

The city that never sleeps is also a showcase of the best the United States has to offer. Manhattan’s bustling, gridded streets are home to some of the nation’s most famous landmarks, such as Times Square, Central Park, and Rockefeller Center, as well as neighborhoods made famous by TV shows, such as the West Village and the Upper East Side. But there’s more to New York City than Manhattan. Explore the other four boroughs, too: the Bronx (home of the New York Yankees and Italian-infuenced Arthur Avenue), Staten Island (a free ferry ride away and a world all its own), Brooklyn (a mix of trendy eateries and family-friendly communities), and Queens (including the waterfront Long Island City and the culturally diverse Astoria).

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in New York

All four seasons bring their own special touch to the Big Apple. Summer highs are in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, the perfect weather for a cooling riverfront stroll or drinks at a rooftop bar. Once the high temperatures fall into the brisk 50-to-70-degree range in September, the fall colors, especially in Central Park, paint the city in cozy hues. While winter can bring chills, with highs in the 30s and 40s, there’s nothing more magical than the city draped with a layer of snow. Springtime offers its own brand of hope, as the urban jungle blooms again, and temperatures rise into the 50s, 60s, and 70s. But as fast as the city moves, so does the weather, so plan ahead and be prepared for quick changes.

Top things to do in New York

Central park.

As the rapid urbanization of New York City surged in the 1800s, the 843-acre Central Park was carved out in 1858 to ensure Manhattanites had their own backyard. Now they share it with 43 million visitors a year. No agenda is needed to explore the wonders of the green space, but among the highlights are the Bethesda Fountain, Belvedere Castle, and Strawberry Fields’ Imagine sign.

Empire State Building

While plenty of city skyscrapers offer sprawling views — including the One World Observatory, Top of the Rock, and Hudson Yards’ Edge — the classic New York City aerial view is still from the top of this 102-story building, completed in 1931.

Statue of Liberty

Located on Liberty Island in the Hudson River, the 22-story copper Lady Liberty is accessible via ferry from Battery Park or New Jersey’s Liberty State Park, and includes a visit to Ellis Island.

Delta plane returns to airport after emergency slide 'separated' from aircraft

new york city air travel

A Delta Air Lines flight returned to JFK Airport in New York City shortly after takeoff Friday when the emergency slide "separated" from the aircraft.

According to Delta, flight 520 to Los Angeles received priority to return to the airport after the flight crew saw an indicator light related to the right overwing exit and heard a "non-routine" sound near the right wing.

“As nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, Delta flight crews enacted their extensive training and followed procedures to return to JFK," a statement from the airline said. "We appreciate their professionalism and our customers’ patience for the delay in their travels."

The flight was operated by a 33-year-old Boeing 767 according to data from Airfleets.net , and passengers were accommodated on a different flight later in the morning. The Federal Aviation Administration said it is investigating the incident and Delta said it would cooperate with that investigation and is supporting efforts to retrieve the slide.

Cruising Altitude: Another Boeing plane issue? Don't fall for the headlines

Aviation safety has been under a microscope recently and the industry is working to redouble the redundancies that keep flying the safest way to travel.

Zach Wichter is a travel reporter for USA TODAY based in New York. You can reach him at [email protected].

New airline allows pawsengers in the cabin

BARK Air’s inaugural flight will be May 23.

I belong to a Facebook group called “ Chartered Air Travel with Pets .” It has more than 42,000 members who mostly share tips about flying overseas with pets and advertise privately chartered cross-country and transatlantic flights.

Think about people who are moving, say, from Toronto to Lisbon and don’t want to deal with the hassle — and potential dangers — of having their 90 pound Great Dane or 85 pound rottweiler fly cargo on a commercial airline.

While perusing posts in that Facebook group, I am always daydreaming. What if I could afford the $10,650 fare for a flight from New Jersey to Munich late in the summer with one of my yellow labs? We’d have a blast! Never mind that the pricey fare is just one way. (Hey, it’s a fantasy.)

All I can do is fantasize because the options for air travel with large-breed dogs are limited or cost-prohibitive.

Enter BARK Air .

Recognizing the “overwhelming demand for a dog-friendly airline that allows dog parents to transport or travel with their dogs,” BARK Air is launching next month and will serve the New York City metro area via Westchester County Airport, Los Angeles via Van Nuys Airport, and London via Stansted Airport, according to a press kit from the company.

To be sure, BARK Air is still pretty unaffordable. A one-way ticket from New York to LA is $6,000, and it’s $8,000 from New York to London per dog (“the human companion flies free,” touted the company.) BARK Air is partnering with a jet charter company to offer the flights and is the latest offering from BARK , the dog toy company established in 2011 offering themed subscription boxes of doggie toys and treats.

It’s true, the demand from pet owners to travel with their furry friends is strong. Not too long ago, people used to exploit an emotional support animal loophole of sorts to bring their pets in the cabin of commercial airlines. It was as easy as buying an official-looking vest on Amazon , getting a doctor’s note attesting that your pig — or snake , duck , or peacock — is your emotional support pet, and voila, you’d be given a free pass to bring the animal on board, consequences be damned . (To be clear, service animals are always allowed on planes but that’s a different, legally protected designation than the more vague emotional support category.)

That loophole has thankfully been tightened . So unless you have a small dog or a cat that can fit in a small carrier , you cannot bring your pet in the cabin of a commercial flight. You’d have to fly it cargo, a terrifying prospect .

There are a few smaller, independent air carriers with limited routes that allow big dogs in the cabin, like JSX (a round-trip fare for late May from Westchester County Airport in White Plains, N.Y., to Miami-Opa Locka executive airport is about $2,800 for one person and one large dog), as well as the more expensive Skye Pet Travel based in Australia and K9 Jets .

It may take a while for fares on BARK Air and other independent airlines to become more affordable. But with the size of the market — between 87 million and 91 million American households own a pet — it’s an overdue service and an overlooked business opportunity.

Everyone is looking to leave the country this summer.

Delta Air Lines has released its second annual list of the most-searched summer travel destinations for 2024 — and the most in-demand spots are international.

Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament at night in London, UK

According to Delta search data in the US from Nov. 1, 2023, to March 18, 2024, for travel between May and August 2024, the top 10 list had numerous unsurprising tourist destinations — but also some more unique spots topping the chart.

London, Paris and Rome are the always-popular destinations that topped the list again this year, while Dublin, Barcelona and Vancouver, Canada, were newly in demand.

Roman ruins in Rome, Italy

Searches for all of the top 10 international destinations increased more than 150% from 2023 — but one stood out more than the rest.

Athens, Greece, had the biggest surge in interest, with a whopping 248% increase in searches compared to last year.

Though the Greek city still came in at fourth place overall, it had a significantly higher surge than all the other destinations compared to 2023.

Acropolis of Athens

Here is the full list of Delta’s 2024 most-searched summer destinations:

  • London, England
  • Paris, France
  • Rome, Italy
  • Athens, Greece
  • Cancun, Mexico
  • Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Dublin, Ireland
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Vancouver, Canada

Meanwhile, when it comes to domestic travel, the most-searched destinations — with the exception of Delta Hubs — included Las Vegas, Orlando, Miami and Honolulu, which Delta suggests is due to an interest in “sun-drenched getaways” and major summer sporting events.

Philly To New York City: 10 Reasons This Train Is The Easiest Way To Traverse Cities

  • Amtrak's Acela is the fastest travel option between Philadelphia and New York City, thanks to speeds of 150 mph, fewer stops, and downtown-to-downtown service.
  • The Acela offers more convenience than flying, with shorter check-in windows and wait times, making it a faster option overall.
  • The Acela provides superior comfort and amenities, with spacious seating, adjustable lighting, and strong Wi-Fi connectivity, making it a popular choice for business travelers.

Thousands of passengers travel every month between Philadelphia and New York City. While it is generally assumed that flying is the fastest option, there are many reasons to take Philly to NYC Amtrak instead.

The Acela is the fastest train in the United States and is comparable to some of the best routes that Amtrak operates . Other than the entire fleet getting a refreshed interior in 2019, what makes the Acela a great choice to travel between Philadelphia and New York City are the many advantages it offers over other travel routes.

A Relatively Quick Trip

At an average of 1 hour and 15 minutes, flying is usually considered as the fastest travel option between Philadelphia and New York City, followed by a train which takes an average of 1 hour and 25 minutes.

Amtrak Acela does have faster speeds and fewer stops than other trains and offers downtown-to-downtown service between Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C., and other intermediate cities.

This makes it the fastest option at 1 hour and 10 minutes between Philadelphia and New York City.

How Is Acela The Fastest?

  • Speeds of 150 mph, fewer train stops, and a Downtown-to-Downtown service make Amtrak's Acela the fastest travel option between Philadelphia and New York City.
  • Train travel is not affected by road conditions such as traffic jams, speed restrictions, re-routings, or weather-induced delays, nor by weather delays that affect air travel.

Amtrak’s new Acela fleet with speeds of 160 mph compared to the current 150 mph is scheduled to enter service on the NEC in 2024.

More Convenient Than Flying

The listed time for any flight is never the same as the total travel time. In fact, for shorter flights, the actual flying time can be a fraction of the total travel time because of all the time spent at the airport.

Flying time between Philadelphia and New York might be listed as approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, but the time taken from the moment of airport entry to airport exit is easily double that, if not more.

Even with minor delays, the Acela will still be faster than air travel because of shorter check-in windows and wait times.

How Can Acela Be Faster Than Air Travel?

  • Between the time spent at airline check-in lines, airport security protocols, and baggage claim , total air travel time adds up to be much longer than train travel, especially on short routes such as the Acela between Philadelphia and New York City.

Work While Traveling

It's easy to concentrate on conference calls, group discussions, and even on-screen work when the ride itself is smooth, fast, and someone else's responsibility.

First Class passengers also have priority check-in and boarding so getting on that work call, or sending out an urgent e-mail can be done almost immediately after reaching the station.

Large workspaces and strong Wi-Fi connectivity despite high speeds throughout the journey, make Amtrak's Acela a popular choice for business travelers.

Why Business Travelers Choose Acela?

  • Adjustable lighting and large tray tables on every seat, convenient electrical outlets, and conference tables make traveling on the Acela feel like a mobile office.
  • Train travel isn't affected by road conditions such as traffic jams, speed bumps, and cars honking (NYC), allowing a quieter and smoother ride.

Amtrak does not offer technical support for the Wi-Fi network, but any network outage can be reported to the train conductor.

Comfort And Amenities

Everyone wants to travel in comfort and Train passengers are no different. Superior comfort, with more space and legroom, is another one of the prime factors behind the popularity of Amtrak's Acela.

Acela has only two classes, First and Business, and both classes offer seats that are wider and with higher recline than most airline seats and definitely more comfortable than car seats.

This is a part of the recently refreshed interior of all Acela trains that included new seat cushions and covers, new aisle carpeting, and a deep clean.

Is Acela More Comfortable?

  • Seats in Acela Business Class are arranged in a 2-2 configuration. While most are forward-facing, some are arranged around a table, so four people can sit and work or socialize together.
  • First Class seating on the Amtrak Acela is in a 1-2 configuration, with many seats facing each other with a table in between. First Class seats have additional comforts such as adjustable headrests, lumbar support, and footrests.
  • Seats are automatically assigned on booking but can be changed at no extra charge.

Child car seats cannot be secured to any seats onboard Amtrak trains or buses.

Red Cap Assistance Service

All stops of the Acela have the Red Caps' service. They are stationed at the front of the station or in the Red Cap area in the main station concourse.

Anyone can use Amtrak's Red Cap assistance service to navigate the station and assist with baggage while getting on or off the train. The Red Cap agents are easy to spot – just look for the employees in red shirts and caps.

Assistance To Board The Acela

  • Red Caps operate motorized vehicles (to carry bags up to 50lbs), wheelchair lifts, and ramps and provide general assistance to visitors.
  • Senior citizens and passengers with disabilities value the Red Cap service a lot. They're encouraged to wave to flag down a Red Cap assistant when they arrive at the station.

The Ability To Bring All The Baggage

This is a massive advantage of traveling on the Acela versus traveling by air. On the Acela, two pieces of carry-on luggage are free. Purses or laptop bags don’t count toward the two pieces of luggage. Two more pieces of baggage are also allowed per passenger with a fee of $20 per bag.

Over and above this, each passenger is allowed 2 pieces of personal items as well with a total weight of 25 lbs. Bags must be securely packed with proper closure to ensure their security as once it is in baggage hold, only baggage handlers manage the bags .

How Many Bags Allowed On Acela?

  • Two checked baggage (Free) + Two checked baggage ($20 per bag) + Two personal items like purse, laptop, Camera bag, etc. (Free)
  • The baggage advantage is huge for families traveling together or people who are moving homes.

Related: Moynihan Train Hall: 10 Things To Know About Penn Station's Modern Addition

Acela Trains Have Superior Tech

All Acela trains use active tilting technology , which helps control lateral centrifugal force, allowing the train to travel at higher speeds on the sharply curved NEC without disturbing the passengers' comfort.

Travel on the Acela is arguably more comfortable than other trains for this reason, especially along the Philly-New York City route as this high-speed operation occurs mostly along the 226-mile route from New York City to Washington, D.C., via Philadelphia.

  • The new trains in 2024 will have greater passenger capacity and an enhanced active tilt system that will allow higher speeds on the many curved sections of the route.

An Easy Way To Go Green

Amtrak trains consume less energy on a per-passenger mile basis than all other modes of transport, like air, water, or automobiles.

According to the 2021 U.S. Department of Energy Data Book , Amtrak was found to be 46 percent more energy efficient than traveling by car and 34 percent more energy efficient than domestic air travel.

Train travel is a great alternative to flying or driving, especially for those who are conscious of their carbon footprint .

Why Is Acela A Sustainable Travel Option

Lawmakers reach agreement to help FAA add more air traffic controllers, safety inspectors

Congressional negotiators have agreed on a $105 billion bill designed to improve the safety of air travel after a series of close calls between planes at the nation's airports.

What You Need To Know

Congressional negotiators agreed on a $105 billion bill to reauthorize the federal aviation administration, which will include funding to hire more air traffic controllers and safety inspectors the bill also requires the federal aviation administration to use the latest technology designed to prevent collisions between planes on the ground the bill drops a house provision that would have raised the mandatory retirement age for airline pilots to 67; it'll stay at 65.

House and Senate lawmakers said Monday that the bill will increase the number of air traffic controllers and require the Federal Aviation Administration to use new technology designed to prevent collisions between planes on the ground. They agreed to prohibit airlines from charging extra for families to sit together but left out other consumer protections proposed by the Biden administration.

The bill was negotiated by Republicans and Democrats who lead the House and Senate committees overseeing the FAA, which has been under scrutiny since it approved Boeing jets that were quickly involved in two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019. It will govern FAA operations for the next five years.

“By getting a five-year reauthorization agreement for both FAA and NTSB, Congress is showing that aviation safety and stronger consumer standards are a big priority,” Washington Sen. Maria Cantwell, chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, said in a statement . “More FAA safety inspectors, mandates on near miss technology and 25-hour cockpit voice recorders, and FAA upgrades to its systems ensure the gold standard in safety. It is also the first major upgrade to air traffic controller hiring in decades. Plus, it sets into law for the first time the right to a refund when flights have been cancelled or delayed more than three hours.”

The Senate is expected to vote on the 1,069-page measure this week.

The House approved its version of the bill last year, but a Senate committee approved a different version in February after fights over several provisions including ones dealing with pilot training and retirement age.

In the end, negotiators dropped a House provision raising the mandatory retirement age for airline pilots to 67; it will remain at 65.
