This was my second time riding the Duck Tours. It's not a bad experience if you haven't tried it. The tour guide was very energetic and kind of kooky. There two parts to this Duck Tour. They first go on land and tour the downtown area showing the state buildings and statues. He told me some stuff about the state capitol that I didn't even know. He said the cone shaped things on the side of the building represented volcanoes and the water around it is the Pacific Ocean. I guess I learned something new today. He did have some trouble saying some of the Hawaiian words correctly but I don't think it bothered the tourists on there. My husband and I were the only non tourists. Most of them were from Japan so Duck Tours had a translator for them. My daughter loved riding in the road part. She liked being able to look outside of the open air vehicle and see people and things around her. After the land tour we did the water tour. We entered through the Ala Wai Harbor. The water was pretty dirty there but it was expected since we've had some pretty big rainfall recently. Thought I was getting sick because the waves were getting kind of big out there. But luckily we didn't stay out too long. We were able to see several surfers and paddlers, but no turtles today. Overall my mother in law really enjoyed it. She's been wanting to go on the Duck Tours for a long time. If you're a resident, the land tour is pretty good. I'm not much of a water person so I preferred the land. Great experience though.

It's alright and good bang for your buck. Not too bad if it's your first time in Hawaii. The first half of the tour is on land. It begins in Waikiki and wraps around Diamond Head and goes back to the boat harbor by The Ilikai Hotel and into Waikiki beach. The two men who run the tour are nice, but it seemed like they were stuck in the 80's or something since they kept making references to Gilligan's Island and dead celebrities that used to live in Oahu. Their jokes also didn't land well in the crowd of people we were with so it also felt a little awkward. Once we hit the ocean part of the tour it was much much better and there was less talking from the guides. The vehicle itself is pretty industrial looking, but still comfy. I think if they were to work on the guide part of the tour it would benefit. Both of the men are trying hard to be funny and witty, but it needs a soft balance.

It was my first time in Hawaii and we wanted to experience a little more than the local Hard Rock Cafe. So we signed up for the Duck Tour with fairly low expectations. It was so much more fun than we had anticipated. On land or by sea, it was beautiful, educational, and funny at times. We saw a sea turtle as we floated next to a legitimate surf competition and got an unrivaled view. The hosts were so nice. It was truly one of the highlights of our trip.

As excited as I was to go on this tour I would not recommend it to anyone visiting Hawaii. I was thoroughly disappointed in the pronunciation of the Hawaiian language and the facts given. I firmly believe when you are providing a service, tour guide, then great care must be taken to give accurate pronunciations and facts. Examples: Maile- pronunciation given by tour guide may-lee Kahiko- pronunciation given by tour guide kay-hee-co The reason Hula for forbidden by the missionaries has nothing to do with the lack of clothes. It has to do with the Hawaiian religion being based on being a pagan Polytheism (multiple gods) religion. King David Kalakaua who started the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival during a revival of Hawaiian language, song, and dance was not the last reigning monarch of Hawaii. That honor goes to Queen Liliuokalani. I do have to give the Duck Tour credit for responding to my initial message. I still feel that when you are taking on the responsibility of sharing another culture great care must be taken to provide accurate information. Especially when your target audience does not know anything and will potentially spread the incorrect information.

Great experience with beautiful views. Its definitely a must try. The captain and tour guide were very friendly and made it fun.

Nothing like the Seattle Duck Tour. What an embarrassment to the duck tour franchise. I scheduled a duck tour two weeks before my girlfriend's 1 year anniversary and we thought it would be very romantic to take a sunset tour....boy were we wrong. First, I emailed them some questions and they took about 10 days to reply. That's after I pressured them to do respond at all by messaging them twice through facebook and twitter. If I had not messaged them, I probably wouldn't have gotten a response. Fast forward to the day of our anniversary tour and I thought it might be a smart idea to call them and casually confirm our reservation. They hadn't refunded our money so I assumed it would be still on. Plus, I received no email to the contrary. The guy on the hawaii duck tour phone: "Oh uh sorry but it's been cancelled." Me: "What? Why?: Him: "Oh uh bad weather and inspection of the docks." Me: "Couldn't you have told me about an upcoming inspection IN ADVANCE? (Idiot.) Him: *garbled muttering* *some baby crying in the background* "So uh, you want a refund?" Me: (Hell) Yes! :/ Him: "Or reschedule?" Me: "No." I don't know if this is some type of under-the-table business or something but it's probably one of the most unprofessional, unhelpful tours in Hawaii! If you don't actively call THEM, they will never bother to contact you and you could just be waiting for them at the dock without any help. I just got the refund and luckily was able to use the money towards a segway tour instead (something me and my gf wanted to do also.) Same time and in Waikiki. Shame on you Duck Tours Hawaii.

We did the downtown/Keehi Lagoon tour. We had a great time! Roland is an excellent tour guide. The bus/boat is amazing. We want to take the Moanalua Bay tour next!

Had a great time..we were picked up on schedule and received interesting & fun road tour. The water portion was beautiful, Rolando, our tour guide offered insights about the reef and sea turtles. Capt. Ricky kept us safe and sound on the street and in the ocean. Both Rolando & Ricky seem to have a excellent working relationship. This tour is worth more than the price charge. It's a gem!

This is must do tour, when visiting Honolulu Hawaii.... we got to see so much, plus this bus goes into the water to see all around from another view. Great captain on board . I took the tour and accidentally dropped my license and credit card they could not do enough for me to find it. I wasn't sure I dropped it there, but the Captain went above and beyond to find and look for it. 2 days later he called me and found it. He didn't stop looking until he was sure it wasn't there. I was visiting Hawaii so I need to fly home it made it very difficult with no license . I can't thank duck tours enough with the captain. You are the best I can't thank you enough. Mahalo....

Photo of Gail P.

This is a great tour that will kill two tourist birds with one stone! You get to ride in a fully restored, authentic WW II amphibious vehicle that rolls down the street and then turns into a boat when you hit the water! It is 32 feet long and all eyes will gawk at you as you rumble down the Oahu streets. In fact my son and daughter were embarrassed to be seen in it but we loved it! So you get a city (and water) tour and then it's on to some snorkeling that takes you to Hanauma Bay. Picked up in the front of our hotel, we were taken for a brief city tour-past Diamond Head, beautiful exclusive homes of movie stars, a water ride, then dis-embarked at Koko Marina. Since we signed up for the Hanauma Bay Snorkle Tour, we received our snorkle gear and a snack, then boarded a van that takes you to the Snorkeling Mecca. Since Hanauma Bay is a Marine Preserve, vans are used to ferry tourists there since they are less taxing on the roads. After a few hours of wonderful snorkeling in the underwater cavity of a volcano, you are then driven back to your hotel. It is almost a full day tour and very fun too! If you have younger kids-they will love it. Unless they are older like mine-who secretly enjoyed it but complained none-the-less. Recommend it to fun-seekers and adventurous types.

Hawaii Duck Tours| Fun by Land and Sea

Hawaii Duck Tours| Fun by Land and Sea

“Quack Quack,” I blew into the neon plastic duck call around my neck as we pulled out onto Ala Moana Blvd. in a flashy amphibious vessel for a ninety minute street/ocean tour of Waikiki and it’s surrounding waters. I wondered to myself how I had gotten roped into participating in what I imagined to be a cheesy tourist trap. “Well, there’s nothing to lose,” I told myself.  “It’s another beautiful day in paradise and the skies are primed for an amazing sunset. I might as well make the most of it.” So, I settled into my seat to take in the scenery and enjoy the breeze as we chugged down the street in our open air boat on wheels.

I was immediately impressed with the easy smiles and friendly enthusiasm of Captain Ricky as he threw shakas and made duck calls to the mobs of pedestrians along the busy Waikiki main drag of Kalakaua Avenue.  His co-pilot – a stuffed shark head – flashed toothy grins from the shotgun position in the truck cab. Passer-byes returned the waves and smiles as our bright yellow duck boat rolled past.

As we trolled the streets of Waikiki our dedicated tour guide, Celeste Capenter, brought the history of the area alive as she wove together stories of cultural folklore with fun facts and landmarks.  Even as an Oahu resident of 25 years I have to admit that I learned many things I didn’t know as Celeste and Ricky shared interesting stories and details about Waikiki.

While on the tour I spoke with Howard and Myrna Snitowsky, a couple visiting from Orange County, California, who had done the tour a year ago and were back for more. When I asked why they came back to do the tour for a second time they replied, “This is the best bang for your buck! We’re back because it’s a fun ride, you get to go all around town, and the sunset on the ocean is really nice.  These guys are genuine and the tour is very good.”

(I had to agree with them on all accounts, at $25-$45 a head for a 90min. tour the prices are very reasonable, the hosts are a pleasure, and you get to experience the fun of both land and sea in one tour.) It’s no wonder that guests enjoy the ride so much when you hear how much their tour guide Celeste enjoys her job, “I love meeting the people, it’s so much fun.  Everytime we do the tour I see people smiling, I see them enjoying themselves and it reminds me how special the aina (land) is here. I absolutely love it!”

After completing the land portion of our ride we braced ourselves for the big moment.  Duck calls filled the air broadcasting the excitement of passengers, as truck transformed to boat and we drove straight into the waters of the Ala Wai boat harbor.  As we made our way through the channel into open seas for the approaching sunset we found ourselves in a bustling ocean-scape. Surfers caught perfect waves against the backdrop of Diamond Head Crater. We heard the calls of oarsmen counting strokes, as crews of outrigger canoes raced past us bodies pumping in unison.  No doubt aware of our cameras fixated on their movements; however,  they paid us no mind, heads bent forward in focused concentration.

We continued on our journey watching the sky turn the warm shades of a tropical Mai Tai drink.  A rain shower blew across the shoreline in the distance creating a sunset rainbow for our viewing pleasure. Sailboats dotted the horizon against the setting sun as we counted down the last seconds of the day.

We slowly redirected our course back towards the now twinkling towers of the city. As we motored back to land something Capt. Ricky had said earlier replayed in my mind, “Maybe we’re a little goofy but when people act childlike it’s wonderful!  What you put into your experience you get back. If you laugh, enjoy, and get into what you’re doing you’re going to have a great vacation!”

A beautiful observation for life in general! I couldn’t help but laugh at my earlier reservations about the tour.  I hadn’t expected to gain such delightful insight from Hawaii Duck Tours – that familiar places can be enjoyed anew when you come with an open mind and playful spirit, that we can get so much more out of our experiences when we lighten up and let ourselves get silly. I genuinely wished I had brought my own family on the tour when they were visiting.  “Next time, I’ll be sure to bring them for a duck tour,”  I thought as I smiled to myself.  I took a deep breath of the fresh salt air as the night descended softly upon us and let out a resounding “QUACK, QUACK!”

Special Notes:

This is a great tour for the whole family! If you’re prone to sea sickness it’s a gentle ride – no big waves or churning seas and you won’t get wet. This also makes it a great ride for photographers and camera buffs.  Great views of the island that you can’t get on land.  Kids will love the duck calls, complimentary for all passengers.

Five stars for Mandy Talpas and her 10-day, 3-island Hawaii birding tour that just wrapped up. Mandy found every one of the birds we targeted, shared her deep knowledge of and passion for Hawaii and its birds and habitats, and made the trip fun with her infectious personality. I recommend Mandy without reservation.

Basco Eszeki

Mandy is an absolutely excellent guide to all of the birds of Hawaii. Our birding tour booked with Hawaii Bird Tours for 10 days. Mandy made sure each of us got a look at the birds that appeared. Mandy knows many of the birds as individuals, which testifies to her dedication to protecting and loving what she does. She is very respectful of the environment and of the relationships each native bird species has with its habitat. Mandy is highly respected and active in the local environmental and conservation groups, a fact that gave us unique insights to the dynamics in birding in the Hawaiian islands. We felt honored to have access to remote regions and to experience the birds in their native habitats. I cannot sing enough praises of Mandy who in addition to being a superb birding guide, is a kind and thoughtful person. This was an unforgettable tour.

Very occasionally you meet and spend time with someone whos infectious enthusiasm, passion and commitment to a chosen endeavour erodes a little of your cynicism and restores a huge chunk of your faith in humanity. Mandy Talpas is one such individual. I have just had the pleasure of spending six days with Mandy birding and photographing on Oahu and Big island. The brief was to get me as many endemics as possible and get me into a position to get some good photos. I have been let down before when my expectations of a trip fell short but on this occassion I need not have worried. Mandy found all the important birds and gained me great access to areas where I could get my photographs. Mandy was always considerate and patient which made for a pleasant birding experience, sharing her knowledge of the Islands, its plants, native peoples and its imperilled birdlife.

I highly recommend hiring Mandy as a birding guide. She help me get some of the hardest birds in Kauai, Hawaii on a custom trip on my ABA Big Year 2018. We got the Anianiau, Kauai Amakihi, Akeke’e, Akikiki, and Puaiaohi along the Mohihi-Waiale Trail. We hiked 7 to 8 miles to achieve this goal 2 different days in a row. It is tough up-and-down terrain and wet and muddy in places but breath taking too. She is willing to go the distance by returning the next day and hiking rain or shine. Always pointing out hazard spots that could possibly trip you up. She is very friendly and easy to talk to you if you want to talk. Outstanding birder that will find the birds for you.

I loved my birding in Hawaii with Mandy. I highly recommend her guided birding tours. Mandy found us the local specialties across the three islands we visited without rushing or stressing over logistics. I appreciate her local knowledge and her ability to put the birds and environment in context. It is encouraging to see the efforts being invested to preserve and improve sensitive Hawaii habitats. Seeing the results, in terms of wild spaces and the birds that thrive there, was a great counterweight to understanding how and why some species will not continue to survive in the wild. I was on the April 10-19, 2023 “Hawaii’s Best Birding Tour: Endemics to Palagics” with a fun group of birders. Thank you, Mandy, for making it a great experience.

Waikiki has a rich, royal heritage. Many of Hawaii’s ali'i (royalty) lived in Waikiki. Waikiki means "spouting waters" in Hawaiian. Waikiki was abundant with agriculture for hundreds of years.

Today, Waikiki is known for its water activities. You can spot tour boats, catamarans, and sailing yachts, waterman, outrigger canoes, and surfers. You are sure to catch some of the best longboarding surfers in the world in Waikiki out practicing at Queens surf break, a favorite wave for pros from around the world.

Colorful restaurants and luxury shopping run the length of the Waikiki coastline. Our tour will travel up Kalakaua Avenue, a well-known street running through Waikiki that gets its name from King David Kalakaua. Kalakaua Ave is filled with shops, restaurants, and historic hotels like the Pink Royal Hawaiian and Moana Surfrider.

Waikiki is also home to the landmark Duke Kahanamoku statue. He is considered the “father of modern surfing." Facing Kalakāua Avenue on the Kuhio Beach section of Waikīkī Beach, the bronze statue celebrates Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, who lived from 1890-1968. The legendary Hawaiian waterman was a master of swimming, surfing, and outrigger canoe paddling. He earned Olympic medals in 1912, 1920, and 1924.

Honolulu Zoo is found in Kapiolani Park. This Waikiki landmark houses 1,230 creatures, like Komodo dragons, cheetahs, giraffes, and Sumatran tigers. There are also beautiful gardens with a range of plants and flowers, many of which are native to Hawaii.

Kapiolani park sits at the base of Diamond Head. The park is a gathering place popular with walkers, runners, tennis enthusiasts and picnickers. King Kalakaua selected this 300-acre track of land at the base of Diamond Head for a public park in 1867. A historic landmark in Waikiki, Kapiolani park was donated to the public in 1877 by King David Kalakaua, who named it after his wife Queen Kapiolani. The park boasts grassy areas and palm trees and the park is a popular place for outside shows and live music events.

Diamond Head Crater

Our tour takes you inside Diamond Head Crater, formed on an extinct volcano. Diamond Head State Monument is found on the east end of Waikiki. The crater is Hawaii’s most recognized landmark and is known for its historic hiking trail, stunning coastal views, and military history. Diamond Head State Monument encompasses over 475 acres, including the interior and outer slopes of the crater. Hawaiians refer to this crater as Lēʻahi, referring to the shape of an ahi, or tuna’s dorsal fin.

Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park

This 11-acre beach park lies at the foothills of Diamond Head Crater below dramatic sea cliffs. This beach is a surfers' paradise as the reef generates waves almost every day. The sand here has a greenish hue and glitters in the sun, which made an impression on early sailors. In 1825, British sailors noticed small sparkling calcite crystals in the beach sand along the crater's foothills and sea cliffs. They named the crater Diamond Hill, which was later changed to Diamond Head.

Ala Wai Canal

The Ala Wai Canal runs along the length of Waikiki and then empties into the ocean. Before the canal was built, Waikiki consisted of wetlands that were fed by streams running from the Makiki, Palolo, and Manoa valleys to the sea. You’ll often see joggers and walkers on the path alongside the canal, and paddlers in outrigger canoes on this historic waterway.

Honu Conservation

Honu Hawaii is proud to partner with The Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project (PMDP) , a non-profit that works with volunteers and partners to remove marine debris from beaches and coral reefs in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. The organization's mission is to protect the unique marine ecosystem of the monument by conducting large scale debris missions removing harmful marine debris and educating the public about the impact of plastic pollution on the environment.

Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles are threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and pollution, among other factors. The waters surrounding Papahānaumokuākea are some of the most productive and biodiverse marine ecosystems in the world, with a high concentration of nutrients that support a diverse array of marine life. The area  provides an essential habitat for the turtles, including seagrass beds, coral reefs, and rocky shores, which provide nesting sites, shelter, and food. Protecting critical habitats like Papahānaumokuākea is essential to ensuring the survival of this species.

A portion of every ticket sale goes towards this organization's mission.
