Quick side note: Don’t go to the Island if you can’t stand on motion sickness or sea sickness especially if you take the pump boat (small boat) this usually occurs if there’s heavy rain with slight wind or a monsoon as the sea is quite shaky.

The nearest airport to the island is Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB), which is located on the neighboring Island of Mactan. If you arrive at the airport, you will need to take a taxi or a private car to Mactan Wharf, where you can catch a ferry to the Island.

Several ferry services operate between the main Island, which is Mactan and Olango Island.

There are two different ports that I know to get to the Island. These are the Angasil port (near Mactan Newtown) and the Hilton port (near Movenpick Hotel). The ferry ride takes approximately 30 minutes from Angasil Port to Sta. Rosa Port and the fare is relatively cheap.

Olango Island is in Cebu Province , just offshore from (east of) Mactan Island and Lapu-Lapu city. It is known mainly for its wildlife sanctuary but also has some fine beaches and dive sites. The Olango Island Group includes Olango and six smaller islands nearby. The main town and main port is Santa Rosa on the west coast.

Much of the terrain is mangrove swamp, home to large numbers of birds and also, unfortunately, to many mosquitoes .

Understand [ edit ]

Olango is fairly densely populated — 41,000 people as of 2020 in about 10 sq km (4 sq miles) — and it is part of Metro Cebu , the country's second-largest urban region. However, it feels distinctly rural; there are no roads wider than two lanes and many are not paved, there are few buildings higher than two storeys and many one-storey nipa huts, quite a few homes lack running water, and various sorts of livestock run loose.

Despite the rural impression, Olango is probably not a destination for backpackers on a tight budget; the accommodation open to tourists is all resorts. These are not as expensive as resorts in some other areas, but still more than cheap hotels elsewhere.

The island lacks things like shopping malls or even a large market; residents generally go to Lapu-Lapu for those. There are sari-sari shops (local version of convenience store), fruit stalls and barbecue places, and Santa Rosa has a pharmacy and a small hospital with an ambulance, but facilities are generally quite limited.

Administratively the Olango Group is split like Mactan Island to the west; the larger northern part is included in Lapu-Lapu municipality while some of the south is in Córdova Municipality .

There are several ferries, only a few of which carry vehicles. The most-used route is from a pier next to the Hilton Hotel on the Lapu-Lapu side to Santa Rosa on Olango. Officially, it is the Punta Engaño Pier but locals call it the 10.31 124.0248 1 Hilton Pier and taxi drivers may know the destination as Movenpick. The resort hotel next to it was Hilton but is now Movenpick. An important pier on Olango island itself is the 10.269 124.046 2 Santa Rosa Pier .

There are also boats from the Hilton pier to Getafe on Bohol .

Getting to and from the pier is easiest by taxi, about ₱300 from downtown Cebu. Mactan-Cebu International Airport is located in Lapu-Lapu, not far from the pier; a taxi to or from there is only about ₱30 . There are also jeepneys that run between the pier area and the airport or Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue cities.

These boats carry passengers, bicycles, motorcycles and freight, but not cars. They seat about 40 people, have outriggers, and look like the photo. Cost is ₱15 plus a ₱5 terminal fee and the ride takes about 20 minutes. Boats run every half hour or so during daylight hours, but there are fairly often delays while freight is loaded or unloaded. The boats do not run in bad weather and are small enough that those with sensitive stomachs may be uncomfortable with even a mild swell.

Boarding one of these ferries is an interesting experience; the gangplanks are narrow, they move because one end is on the boat, not all have a railing, and on some the railings or even the floor have gaps. However, crew members are very helpful about reaching out with a stabilizing hand where needed, and sometimes two of them will hold up a long bamboo pole to provide a railing. There are porters moving freight on and off the boat; one of them will be happy to handle your luggage for a few pesos.

There are lots of other boats, mostly smaller than the ferries, around the pier. Many offer "island-hopping" trips to some of the smaller islands in the area. Boats direct to resorts on Olango can also be arranged, preferably by contacting the resort ahead of time, but also by just haggling with boat men around the pier.

There is occasionally a small RoRo ferry between the Hilton and Santa Rosa piers, mainly carrying freight and trucks loaded with freight.

Get around [ edit ]

The commonest mode of transport on the island is a motorcycle plus sidecar rig known as a pedicab . These are more expensive on the island than elsewhere; most rides cost ₱120 .

Bringing your own bicycle or motorcycle would be practical; the ferries can carry those, traffic on the island is light, and the main roads are mostly paved though often quite narrow. You need to drive slowly and watch for potholes, wandering animals, and children playing in the street. At night, beware of motorcycles running without lights.

Bringing a car is more difficult; you have to catch one of the RoRo ferries which are infrequent and usually packed with trucks.

A wetland area with many water fowl, very popular with bird watchers ; close to a hundred species are found here, about half of them migratory and half permanent residents. It is listed by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat . See Ramsar sites . Facilities are minimal; the sanctuary office sells coconut juice and provides a bathroom, but there are no restaurants or accommodation on-site. ₱20 for Filipinos, ₱100 for others .

Do [ edit ]

The main dive sites around Olango itself are Mabini Point at the northern tip of the island (be cautious; currents here are tricky), Baring on the northwest side, and Santa Rosa near the middle of the west side.

It is also possible to hire a boat to get to various smaller islands nearby; some of those have good diving.

The Lapu-Lapu city government organizes a tour they call OMG, Olango my Getaway [dead link] at ₱999 a person; it includes transport, some meals, and a night at Triponia Homestay, listed under #Sleep .

Buy [ edit ]

There are some handicrafts and shells available from street vendors and in shops at the ferry terminals, but this side of tourism is not well developed.

Eat [ edit ]

There are a few small places serving Filipino food in Santa Rosa, worth trying if you feel adventurous or are on a backpacker budget.

The only places with an extensive menu including western food are in the resorts, listed at #Sleep below. Prices there are not outrageous, but they are noticeably higher than in areas with more competition in western restaurants such as Cebu City or Dumaguete . Expect about ₱300 a person for a meal and drink.

There are also a number of places billed as "floating restaurants" that are actually built on pilings in shallow water. They are only accessible by boat; many of the island-hopping boats or dive trips bring their clients here. Prices are high by Philippine standards but the seafood is very fresh and often excellent.

Drink [ edit ]

Any of the restaurants, either in the resorts or the small Filipino places, can provide beverages but there are no bars, pubs or discos.

Many of the small roadside stores have soft drinks and beer, and these are generally cheaper than the resorts. At Sagastrand , for example, either the restaurant or the minibar in your room will provide a 330 ml bottle of any of San Miguel's three main beers — Pilsen, Light or the stronger and darker Red Horse — for ₱65 , and the restaurant has other beers as well. The little shop across the street sells a liter (1000 ml) of Red Horse for ₱90 , but that is the only beer they offer.

It is common for people with a generous budget to stay on the Lapu Lapu side; the area just opposite the island is called Mactan New Town and has many high-end resorts such as Movenpick (formerly Hilton) and Shangrila. A short boat ride from there gets you to the dive sites or wildlife sanctuary on Olango.

There is no really cheap accommodation, such as backpacker dorms, on the island; prices start around ₱1000 .

Stay healthy [ edit ]

There are a lot of mangrove swamps and therefore mosquitoes . The region has no malaria but does have dengue fever so taking precautions against the mosquitoes is strongly recommended.

There is good cell phone service in most places on the island. The resorts have Wi-Fi, but the connection is often slow.

Go next [ edit ]

There are boats available to some of the smaller outlying islands, but for most travellers the place to go next will be back to Lapu-Lapu .

An alternative would be to take the boat from Santa Rosa to the Hilton Pier and pick up another boat there to Getafe on Bohol .

Olango Island Travel Guide

In a nutshell.

Olango Island is the largest island in a group of islands and islets collectively referred to as the Olango Island group.

Comprised of Olango and 6 smaller islets (Camungi, Pangan-an, Caohagan, Nalusuan, Gilutonan, and Sulpa) the Island is located in Cebu Province and is approximately five kilometres east of Mactan Island. Around 25,000 people live on the islands.

Why go to Olango Island

Olango is best known for its bird sanctuary and its dive sites; Olango features some of the most extensive reefs in the Philippines.

When in Olango, you won’t want to miss the Olango Island Bird Sanctuary , which provides a safe place for migratory birds coming from and going to Russia, China and Japan. The sanctuary spans almost 1,000 hectares and you’ll be guaranteed sightings of rare and beautiful water bird species like plovers, sandpipers, and egrets. 97 different types of birds can be spotted on the island, about half of which are migratory. Much of the sanctuary is in mangrove swampland and unfortunately, where there are mangrove swamps, there are usually mosquitos so be sure to bring bug repellent. The best time to check out the birds is at high tide, which changes depending on the season, so look at the tide charts before you go. It costs PHP100 for a ticket to get into the sanctuary but the prices are cheaper if you are a local Filipino.

If you’re tired of spending time on land and itching to get into the water, then Olango offers three separate world-class dive sites .

The first is called Mabini Point , which is located on the northern part of the island. It’s best for experienced divers because the currents at the point can be strong.

Baring is a dive site near a reef on the north-western side of the island where tuna, shark and barracuda are common sightings.

A bit south of Baring you will be able to find Santa Rosa , which is the shallowest of the three sites. It’s good for catching glimpses of smaller fish like snappers, angelfish, and various members of the jack family. If you’ve done all three of these dives and still want to spend more time underwater, it’s possible to hire a boat to take you to some of the smaller, uninhabited islands, which also have good diving sites.

When to go to Olango Island

Olango maintains a tropical climate year-rout and the largest fluctuation between highs and lows is typically three degrees Celcius. The driest months are from January to April, and the dry season can last all the way into mid-May some years.

Where to stay on Olango Island

Unfortunately, budget accommodations haven’t really made it to Olango yet. It’s not really possible to find a bed for less than PHP1000 nightly. It’s reasonable to expect that once the island becomes more and more popular with tourists, budget options will begin to pop up.

That said, there are some very nice options which, though expensive, are pleasant places to stay. Tripoli’s Homestay mixes the idea of a homestay with a resort and rooms begin at PHP2000. Some of the rooms feature sea views and falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean are very peaceful to fall asleep to.

Talima Beach and Dive Resort is the island’s more well appointed option with rooms starting at PHP1800 nightly. The hotel features massages, swimming pools and its own private dive centre.

Sagastrand Beach Resort and Restaurant is also a high-end hotel with a beach, private swimming pool and a restaurant with both local and Western dining options. Rooms at Sagastrand begin at PHP2000.

Where to eat in Olango Island

Dining options are limited. There are not many restaurants that serve Western food outside of the resorts, and most of the island’s restaurants are geared towards its locals. This can either be a dream or a nightmare, depending on what kind of traveller you are. In any event, prices at the island’s restaurants are generally pretty cheap because they are designed to fit a Filipino budget. The few restaurants that do serve western food are a handful of floating restaurants, which are generally pretty tacky and expensive.

Similarly, nightlife is rather limited. While some of the resorts feature bars, there are no clubs or dance halls on the island. You can also buy alcoholic beverages at any of the grocery or convenience stores on the island, which will be cheaper than at the resorts. Because eating and drinking options are relatively small, there is also the option to make it a day trip from Cebu which many tourists and which your hotel in Cebu can arrange for you.

How to get around Olango Island

To get around the island, the most popular option is the pedicab , which is essentially a motorcycle attached to a sidecar, and the passenger rides in the sidecar. Though it’s a different transportation system than others you might be accustomed to in the Philippines, the cost is generally around the same as a jeepney, and sometimes a bit less expensive.

You can also rent a motorbike on the island in the neighbourhood PHP300, but be sure you know how to drive one first!

How to get to and from Olango Island

There is no airport on the island, and you must arrive by boat .

A journey from downtown Cebu to the ferry terminal costs PHP300. Or, if you want to arrive at the terminal from Cebu airport, it’s significantly closer and will be cheaper at around PHP30.

It takes about 20 minutes in the boat from Cebu island to Olango. The ticket costs PHP20 and the boats run twice every hour. It’s not a luxury cruise experience and sometimes, the combination of a bumpy ride with the heat and the exhaust fumes can make for an uncomfortable time but it’ll all be over shortly!

Is Olango Island a safe place to visit?

Olango is a perfectly safe destination in the Philippines. There is no tension between locals and the government, no terrorism or insurgency like in other parts of the Philippines, and tourists are most likely to be injured from car accidents or bad seafood! The sun is quite strong, even when it’s cloudy out and it’s best to use SPF 30 at least.

Bicycle Tour: Go Biking Around the Island

There are plenty of bike rentals around the island. Prices vary but it’s typically offered at a low price of 20 pesos per hour only. You may also arrange a bike tour from local tour operators like Bugoy Bikers . They offer a whole day tour inclusive of pick-up and drop-off at the port, lunch and snacks, water, refreshments, entrance fee at the bird sanctuary, snorkeling fee and equipment, local guide, helmet and of course, a bicycle.

Olango Island is a place with a good landscape with ample greenery and minimal cars on the road. If you’re on for a soothing and calming ride, then biking at Olango is a good idea.

Visit the Ecotourism Park

Olango Island Ecotourism Park is located at Sitio Asinan, Barangay Sabang, Olango. It is a beachfront public park that offers basic amenities where you can do swimming, do a paddleboat, view some of their in-house marine animals, picnic, find good spots for picture taking, camp at night or simply enjoy the stillness of the place.

The place is relatively small with a capacity of 50 pax only so make sure to do advance booking. They don’t have private rooms here but they offer tents for rent and a perfect camping site for overnight stays.

There are plenty of campgrounds at Olango offering basic camping amenities at a very practical price. Camping sites are available at the Ecotourism Park, at the marine sanctuary, as well as other resorts on the island.

Not a lot of people are probably aware of this but Olango Island does not actually just refer to a single island but to 7 small islands namely Olango, Sulpa, Guilotongan, Nalusuan, Caohagan, Camungi, and Pangan-an.

Exploring Olango island’s vast flatlands

The entire island group is just 1,030 hectares big and is located about five kilometers from the island of Mactan. This place is a major tourist destination not just among local Cebuanos but also among foreign visitors visiting Cebu.

How to Get to Olango Island

There are two ways to get to the main island of Olango.

The most popular way, which is also what most residents use, is via the port beside Movenpick Resort (previously Hilton Hotel). To get to the port, simply ride a jeepney plying the Punta Engaño route and have yourself dropped off near the hotel.

Another way would be from the Angasil Port found near what was formerly known as the Portofino Resort.

Both rides take about 20 minutes and cost around Php15 per person, including the terminal fee.

Things to Do in Olango Island

The island of Olango is most popular for the 920-hectare Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary. We suggest visiting the island during the winter months (November to February), when migratory birds from Northern China, Siberia, and Japan make their stop. You can see about 97 species of birds around the island, 48 of which are migratory birds.

If you are interested in the coastal ecosystem, you can also opt to visit any point on the island and explore its flatlands, offshore coral reefs and mangroves. The mangroves in Olango are among the most extensive in the entire province and you can join in the planting at the Payag sa Asinan Eco-Tourism Park.

And, once you are already on the island, you might as well not want to miss out scuba diving. The island has three major dive sites namely Mabini Point, Baring, and Santa Rosa. These dive sites can offer different experiences: Mabini Point is known for its strong and unpredictable currents; Baring as one of the deepest wall dives; and Santa Rosa for its sandy bottom which eventually leads to a 50-meter dive.

There are numerous options for guests visiting the island. We suggest that you try any one of these places, depending on your budget and preferences:

Guests also get access to a 14-hectare fish sanctuary where they can snorkel around. Many visitors also frequent this place as they provide scuba diving opportunities around the neighborhood.

Isla Bonita Inn

For a no-frills accommodation, try visiting this simple hotel is great if you are simply looking for a place to sleep in, without it having a lot of fancy add-ons. Aircon rooms for double occupancy are pegged at Php800 per night. And, while you cannot enjoy cable TV at night, there is always the videoke to while away the time.

Shalala Beach Rooms and Cottages

If you are looking for cheap accommodation and still enjoy a beachfront, try this one out. It’s pretty cheap at just Php1000 for a fan room of two — and you get all the mangrove, sand and sea that you want. If you explore around either on foot or on a kayak, you might just get to see the birds up close and in person.

Payag sa Asinan Eco-Tourism Park

If you are in for a one-of-a-kind experience, head out to this eco-tourism park found on the island. We were able to camp out in Payag sa Asinan (literally, the Hut in Asinan) and it only cost us Php80 for a family of three (toddlers are free of charge, of course).

You can also do all sorts of activities including mangrove planting, canoeing/kayaking, fish feeding and more.

What to Eat in Olango Island

Most residents on the island live off from fishing so you will never run out of seafood to eat while you are here. We suggest feasting on saang or spider shells which cost as low as Php7 each. Many kinds of fish are also available here and we were able to buy a huge one at a bargain price of Php150 per kilo.

Resort restaurants may cost a little bit more.

Olango Island Travel Guide

Olango Island lies five kilometers east of Mactan Island off the eastern coast of Cebu Island. It is a popular tourist destination, known for its wildlife sanctuary and excellent scuba diving.

Most of Olango Island is preserved for its rare ecosystem that includes mangroves, seagrass beds, sandflats and extensive offshore coral reefs. The reef that surrounds Olango is one of the largest in the Central Visayas.

Visitors flock to this nature island as often as the migratory birds, which descend every year from late July until November to enjoy much warmer climes. The 920-hectare Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary ensures that the birds have all the protection they need. Some 97 species of bird can be found on the island, 56 of them migratory.

The rest of this flat island boasts the largest mangrove swamp in Cebu province and three excellent scuba diving spots. Mabini Point is a 35 meter headwall littered with sharks, Baring is even longer and teeming with fish, and Santa Rosa is known for its lovely coral gardens. Tours and excursions can be arranged on Mactan Island or in Cebu City .

Getting There & Away

It’s quite easy to reach Olango Island since it lies so close to bustling Mactan- Cebu International Airport. Visitors can either head into Cebu City and catch a boat directly to Olango Island or stay on Mactan Island , where the airport is located, and catch a boat to Olango from a number of coastal ports. Cebu’s airport has regular links with Manila , from where a wide range of international flights are available.

Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary

Top choice in Cebu

Just 20 minutes from Mactan by public bangka, Olango Island is home to this important wildlife reserve. Taking in 1030 hectares of sand flats and mangroves on Olango's southern shores, the sanctuary supports the largest concentration of migratory birds found in the Philippines – 48 species (including the rare Chinese egret, the Asiatic dowitcher and several species of sandpiper and plover).

Timing is everything here. The peak months are October to November for the southward East Asian–Australasian migration, and February to March for the northward leg. Be sure to visit at low tide, when the birds take to the sand flats en masse to fill up on worms, snails and small fish. There aren't many birds here from May to August, but the sanctuary remains an austerely beautiful spot and worth a visit. You can also kayak through mangroves with Island Buzz Philippines .

The sanctuary is 15 minutes from Olango's Santa Rosa pier by tricycle (around P180 round trip with an hour or so waiting time).
