OMD at London’s O2 Arena: timings, tickets and everything you need to know

The ‘Enola Gay’ singers will perform a landmark show at the O2 this Sunday

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark AKA OMD will play one of their biggest shows to date this weekend, taking over the O2 Arena in Greenwich. The ‘Enola Gay’ singers will be celebrating the release of their latest album ‘Bauhaus Staircase’, as well as pulling out some older bangers too. 

If you're heading to the concert, here's everything you need to know. 

When are OMD playing the O2?

OMD are playing the O2 on Sunday March 24. 

What time do doors open? 

Doors open at 6.30 pm. 

What time will OMD come on stage? 

The duo should be making an appearance at around 9 pm.

Who is the support act?

OMD will be supported by 80s chart topper Howard Jones, who will be blasting out hits like ‘What is Love?’ and ‘It Can Only Get Better’.

Synthpop heroes Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) will be arriving stateside next spring for their Souvenir Greatest Hits 2022 Tour, celebrating 40 years of the band.

Like many other artists, their initial anniversary tour was delayed by the pandemic, but now the legendary UK outfit will return to the road for a UK arena tour this fall and North America in 2022.

The tour kicks off April 22 in Orlando, and dates include Atlanta, DC, NYC, Boston, Toronto, Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, Austin, Denver, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, Oakland, Los Angeles, and more. Tickets for the whole tour go on sale Friday, June 18 at 10:00am local time.

Along with their forthcoming Souvenir tour, OMD will also be performing a 40th Anniversary livestream, titled You Me & OMD , on June 19 at 4:00 pm EST. Tickets are on sale and a portion of the proceeds with go towards OMD’s touring crew who haven’t worked since February 2020.

Following on from their 40th anniversary celebrations last year which saw them release their greatest hits and anniversary box set, Souvenir, OMD has announced further remastered reissues of their UK Top 20 album Liberator and their 1996 album Universal on vinyl on August 6, that’s available for pre-sale.

OMD: O2 Apollo, Manchester – Live Review

OMD give their new Bauhaus Staircase album a night out in Manchester and Del Pike is there every step of the way.

Whilst sitting in a hospital waiting room this morning, thinking about the OMD gig tonight, I was surreally awoken from my thoughts by the strains of Enola Gay drifting from the waiting room TV. This was not an appearance by the band on This Morning, but the soundtrack to a Vitality Dog food ad. The music world moves in mysterious ways. Thankfully the inclusion of that early OMD classic in their set tonight felt more appropriate without a healthily bounding dog, but with hordes of adoring fans in his place.

It’s always strange to see a band from your hometown play in another City, especially when it’s just up the M62, and I was immediately struck by the difference in the audience from when I saw them play the Liverpool Empire in 2021. If anything the Manchester crowd appeared much more engaged and devoted, hardcore even. Perhaps that slight detachment from them makes a difference, who can tell? It’s funny up North.

Support tonight, Walt Disco , know how to warm up a crowd. Hailing from Glasgow, this young band with an upcoming album to promote are a great choice, with their electro/guitar-driven indie pop being highly reminiscent of similar early 80s bands like OMD themselves. Singer Jocelyn channels the long-lost spirit of The Associates Billy MacKenzie throughout with frantic wailing, whilst striking androgynous Bowie poses and clambering onto the drumkit in their heels or flailing wildly across the stage.

Whilst taking a serious stance for the main part, there are moments of light relief with brief choreographed high-kicking dance moves with the rest of the band and genuine warmth in Jocelyn’s in-between song banter.

For such a young band, two things are immediately notable. Their musicianship is breath-taking at times, with some incredible guitarwork, and alarmingly tight drum skills. One intro sounds remarkably like Mike Joyce’s Panic opening roll, and when the keyboard player joins on third guitar there is an undeniable likeness to The Smiths again during their Craig Gannon period.

The other point is how they capture perfectly the feel of early 80s indie, as soon as Cut Your Hair kicks in you can taste the Red Stripe running down your throat and smell the dry ice and Insette in your nostrils. At some points, we are cast back even further with How Cool Are You, a perfect tribute to the madness of Sparks, complete with a deranged “La La La La” intro. Newer material like the single Pearl might be a little more meditated, showing a mature side to their work, but equally infectious. Walt Disco are certainly interesting and appear to be heading for more dizzying heights. Their 2022 album, Unlearning is a solid starting point.

OMD are looking good before they even begin with crystal sharp visuals and three illuminated podiums, arced into an arena for Andy McClusky’s frenzied 90 minutes of dancing. More Dad dancing than Dada. Evolution of Species, the sample-heavy, Public Service Broadcasting style instrumental from the new album (Bauhaus Staircase) plays over startling images of covid cells and various fluid biological patterns. McClusky’s dancing over the pre-recorded piece is an unusual opening for a gig but works well as it melds into Anthropocene. The album is something of an event as it is the closest they have come to the classic early albums that fans hold dear for a long time. This is all I’ve heard as I’ve listened in to fan conversations in the bar and loos, they are giving their fans exactly what they want to hear, and Anthropocene is a perfect example of that return to form.

The fun is short-lived, making Tesla Girls seem even more out of place with a return to the serious Kleptocracy from the new album “A song about Narcissists… politicians”. It’s an album highlight and could easily have been lifted from those early years.

Teasing the Manchester crowd, McClusky taunts “If you thought that was miserable, we’re going to do a couple of Morrissey songs”. Unsurprisingly the joke hits the mark. “Now we’re going to make you jump up and down to a song about the edge of the fucking world”, and we are into History of Modern (Part 1) with suitably apocalyptic visuals.

I like the fact that If You Leave allows McClusky to remind us that this song featured in the 1986 film Pretty in Pink as he rejoices “We’re off to Hollywood!”, and we are treated to images of Molly Ringwald throughout. They should probably be over this fact by now but it’s a welcome reminder of how much 1980s American teen movie makers loved to include tracks from UK alternative artists.

The only other original member, keyboard player Paul Humphreys takes centre stage to deliver Forever Live and Die, a song that has its merits, marred only by a smooth production that sounds quite dated now.

The mid-section picks up with Bauhaus Staircase, “A song about the Nazis closing down art schools”. It’s a song that sounds ridiculously pretentious on first listen but gradually creeps under your skin in a good way. The visuals for this are great with all of the album covers gliding by in a heightened Bauhaus style.

Souvenir, Joan of Arc and Joan of Arc (Maid of Orleans), all culled from 1981’s Architecture and Morality get the high praise and interaction they deserve before the backing track (The Rock Drill) provides a growling intro for new album belter Verushka. This is a slow love song that clashes brilliantly with the electro-industrial grind of the majority of album tracks and includes visuals of a manikin-like model with a startling resemblance to Sinead O’Connor.

Healing and Don’t Go also represent new material before the home run of favourites, So in Love (Karaoke Classic!), Locomotion, Sailing on the Seven Seas (OMD’s very own Yellow Submarine) and the pure belter Enola Gay (without healthy dog). It is difficult to describe the sheer array of dances and erratic movements in the crowd during this closing sequence, from air keyboards to violent sky punching and mass waving. At one point it feels like the balcony is going to fall.

The catchy Look at You Now from Bauhaus Staircase leads the encore and we get a brilliantly euphoric Pandora’s Box with obligatory images of Louise Brooks and the inevitable final song, Electricity, dedicated to one Anthony H Wilson who released the single originally on his Factory Records Label. It’s worth noting how similar the sleeve design for the Bauhaus Staircase album is to the original Factory logo.

OMD are back for more of the same in 24 hours and you can guarantee there will be familiar faces from the night before in the crowd. Let’s just hope they rinse their tee shirts, as Manchester OMD fans know how to work up a sweat and then some.

Brilliant review, we was there on Fri 1st March in Manchester, this crowd & this venue totally rocks, demanding plenty but easily pleased by what is offered up by the awesome band we know as OMD

Sounds bloody marvellous, and you won’t find me complaining about “smooth production.” It’s OMD!
