About the Palace Theatre

Originally opening in 1891, Manchester’s Palace Theatre of Varieties had an immense capacity of 3,675. Hosting stars such as Lillie Langtry and Charlie Chaplin, it was one of the UK’s most prolific music hall venues. In 1913, the building was renovated under architect Bertie Crew and reopened after seven months with a performance from Harry Houdini. Over the 20th century, it has hosted a variety of events including ballets, concerts and plays. By the late 1970s, waning audience numbers threatened the Palace Theatre with closure, and it subsequently underwent major refurbishment before re-opening in 1981. The stage and dressing rooms were extended to accommodate companies such as the Covent Garden Opera and Kirov Ballet, and the auditorium and Front of House were restored to their original Edwardian décor. Now owned by ATG along with its sister venue, Opera House Manchester, the Palace Theatre has established itself as a major receiving house for touring plays, musicals and entertainment.

Public Transport: For the public transport in Palace Theatre, the Metrolink tram service and several bus routes will drop you at Piccadilly Gardens, which is but a quick walk away. Prefer the train? Oxford Road Station is ridiculously close, almost a hop, skip, and a jump!

On Foot: Manchester city centre isn’t exactly sprawling, so if you’re nearby, why not walk? Trust me, a pre-theatre stroll sets the tone for a cultured evening.

Built in 1891, the Palace Theatre has been the cornerstone of Manchester’s performing arts scene for well over a century. 

Originally named the “Grand Old Lady of Oxford Street,” this venue has hosted legendary performances that range from classical Shakespeare to modern musical sensations like ‘Les Misérables’.

Things to Remember

No, you can’t bring your own tipple—the theatre has its own bars for that. And as tempting as it is, photography during performances is a no-no. 

Also, if you’re planning to rush out before the final applause for an early exit, let’s not. It’s poor form and distracts the performers and fellow audience members.

Tips for a Grand Time

Arrive early: If you fancy having your pick of the merch or want to sip a glass of bubbly before the show, arrive at least 45 minutes before the show. 

Choose seats according to your preference: The seat you choose is a personal choice. The stalls offer an up-close experience, whereas the circle seats give you a panoramic view. I personally love the front row of the circle—it’s the best of both worlds!

Hamilton review – revolutionary musical hits the road with a blazing new cast

Palace theatre, Manchester The new tour of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s blockbuster is delivered by an outstanding ensemble

A s this UK and Ireland tour is launched, it’s tempting to say that Hamilton is back. But Lin-Manuel Miranda’s phenomenal musical has never really been away. Right now there are five rooms where it happens: in New York, Chicago, London and Manila as well as Manchester, where an outstanding new ensemble deliver its irresistible lyrics with verve.

Miranda’s subject is unwieldy – the US’s newfound independence and constitution, seen through the eyes of its first treasury secretary and told in a whirl of rap battles and revolutionary pamphlets, equestrian attire and elegant robes à l’Anglaise. It runs at more than 20,000 sung-through words but what is most striking, seeing the musical again, is the clarity, economy and unity of storytelling in the songs whose phrases return to be cast in a new light.

Miranda has a gift for distilling emotional states – the burn of ambition, gnawing regret, euphoric new love – and for finding, as the song goes, the quiet moments in the eye of a hurricane. In Thomas Kail’s production, co-directed with choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler, the staging is as supple as the verse and propelled by a revolve stage. David Korins’ set design uses unfussy brickwork and wood, the barrels and crates of New York harbour fit for repurpose. The rigging is matched by the sinews of an industrious, bare-armed ensemble who lunge, salute and load invisible weaponry, their moves conveying the triggering of a gun through to the deadly impact.

But never mind who lives and dies, who tells this story? In the lead role it’s the assured Shaq Taylor, a revelatory Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at Regent’s Park Open Air theatre. Taylor convinces as a poetic dreamer, goofball and fervent nation-builder – a man realising his own potential as he strives to do the same for his country. The production has the unusual distinction of a qualified solicitor playing lawyer Aaron Burr. Sam Oladeinde conveys a legal mind at work, lends smooth enunciation to a character defined by his indecipherable nature, and delivers The Room Where It Happens as if possessed. Taylor and Oladeinde, alone but together, perform the ode to parental pride, Dear Theodosia, with fragile beauty.

As Hamilton’s father figure George Washington, Charles Simmons has the right weathered authority and KM Drew Boateng brings gruff-voiced combustibility as Hercules Mulligan. Billy Nevers’ Lafayette appears drunk on his own rhymes before Nevers returns in scintillating form as Thomas Jefferson, voice as smooth as his velvet (costume design by Paul Tazewell).

As Eliza, Maya Britto builds her young family’s world carefully, ensuring a devastating poignancy when it shatters in the songs Burn and It’s Quiet Uptown. Aisha Jawando, as Angelica, attacks the usually more controlled Satisfied with a fitting rage of frustration. Throughout, lines are given fresh readings by a cast in full flow and full control. Even Peggy is less of a drag here (Gabriela Benedetti, returning as an electric Maria Reynolds).

Daniel Boys’s King George, wearing sparkly crown and shit-eating grin, is every inch the spoilt child. As the bewigged monarch attempts to keep up with the freestyling ensemble during The Reynolds Pamphlet, you have a flash of just how ridiculous an 18th-century hip-hop musical could have looked. But Miranda’s contribution to the “unfinished symphony” of America remains a work of bulletproof brilliance.

Set against the majesty of the Serengeti Plains and to the evocative rhythms of Africa, Disney's multi award-winning musical.

Based on the Disney animated film, The Lion King premiered on Broadway in 1997 and The Lion King London opened in October 1999, playing to packed houses ever since!

The Lion King Musical transports audiences to a dazzling world that explodes with glorious colours, stunning effects and enchanting music. At its heart is the powerful and moving story of Simba - the epic adventure of his journey from wide-eyed cub to his destined role as King of the Pridelands.

Brilliantly reimagined by acclaimed director Julie Taymor, Disney’s beloved film has been transformed into a spectacular theatrical experience that explodes with glorious colours, stunning effects and enchanting music.

With music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, a musical score created by Hans Zimmer and choral arrangements by Lebo M, Disney's The Lion King London songs include I Just Can't Wait to Be King, The Circle of Life, Endless Night and Shadow Land.

The Lion King is recommended for a general audience. As an advisory to adults who might bring young people, Disney recommends The Lion King for ages 6 and up. Children under the age of 3 will not be admitted into the theatre. All persons aged 16 or under must be accompanied by an adult and may not sit on their own within the auditorium. All persons entering the theatre, regardless of age must have a ticket.

Disney's the lion king - palace theatre, manchester - tuesday 1st november 2022 by karen ryder, manchester is feeling the love of the lion king - long live the king.

“Nannnnnsss igonnnniyaaaa! Baggabitinaaahhhh, sita ummmmm benya bahhh”

If those garbled bunch of letters above, which I can assure you bear no actual resemblance to the real lyrics, mean anything to you at all, then right now you will be picturing a glorious sun rise, deers tilting their heads in the morning glow and birds soaring across a flame lit horizon. That is the power of The Lion King ! That is what will give you goosebumps on your goosebumps within the first few seconds of the show starting, and that is why you simply have to be a part of the Disney magic. I go to the theatre A LOT, for both work and pleasure, and I cannot think of another show where just one song in I have tears rolling down my cheeks at the sheer abundance of joy, and the overwhelming nature of my emotions at the spectacular experience I have just encountered. It is incomparable and as you reconnect with that excited inner child as your imagination is ignited, you simply will not know where to look or fathom how to take in everything presented before you. It is the most joyous encounter where nature meets theatre magic, and it is right here in Manchester! No wonder it was announced earlier this week that The Lion King has extended its already epic run till the 11th March 2023, making Manchester it’s home for a whopping 19 weeks! I don’t need to eat right? Or heat my house? I can just keep returning to watch it time and time again!

So, unless you have been living under Pride Rock then you will know the story of The Lion King , and if you’re anything like my family, will have re-enacted its scenes with the younger members countless times. Mufasa is King of the Pride Lands and as he announces the birth of his son and future King Simba at a ceremony, the animals rejoice. Mufasa rules with a respectful command and adheres to the balance of nature and the circle of life, ensuring he is admired by all. All except his brother Scar that is, who has suppressed his bitter jealousy for years in the hope that one day he will take over as King, but now Simba has been born, that day will never come. As Simba playfully practises his hunting with friend Nala, Scar is plotting his death. Time after time Scar tries and fails to make Simba disappear, so when Mufasa runs to rescue Simba from a stampede created by Scar, he grasps the opportunity to kill Mufasa. A traumatised Simba believes Scar when he is told it’s his fault the King is dead and he must run. Run and never return. Enter Timone and Pumba who unknowingly raise the future King, until one day Nala shows up looking for help as Scar has over hunted and decimated the Pride Lands. As they fall in love, this loyal and quirky army head back to claim what is rightfully Simba’s. Lots of roaring later, Simba wins, has a son of his own, and the circle of life continues. It’s all a bit Hamlet and it’s all a bit brilliant.

The stage production of The Lion King was ground breaking when it was first staged and there is still little that can touch its genius today. With exemplary design by Julie Taymour , animals are brought to life in a unique and credible way, ensuring that we believe completely in the character and accept their stories, rather than being reluctant to cheer on a cutesy fluffy lion cub. The brilliance is that nothing is hidden. The mechanics of the puppets, the masks, the set and the movement of the animals is unashamedly on view for all to witness, adding a brilliant new element for audiences everywhere and engaging even those who are reluctant to admit that they love this Disney classic. But we all know that Disney is genuinely for any age and the production and message (and some of the adult only jokes) behind this show prove that tenfold. I know I gained a whole new perspective watching it this evening than when I first watched it in my early twenties. It is a show that grows old with you, presenting new messages and meaning depending on where you find yourself in life. I have never wiped away so many sneaky tears as I did tonight for example in the beautifully bonding father and son song by Mufasa of “He Lives In You.”

There are endless moments to gush about in The Lion King , from the mesmerising “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King,” where an impressive curtain drops down and provides plenty of reveals, including moving floats and giraffes that bow down into the audience, to the mesmerising “He Lives In You Reprise,” where lights are used to truly create beautiful art and collect together in waves to produce Mufasa’s reflection in the water. I was in awe at the sheer brilliance of how this was put together, and it’s really hard trying to review something when you want to talk incessantly about every detail but equally want to allow others to savour the moment and the magic for themselves. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, inflatables are introduced, shadow puppets astound, cast members continually surprise you with their entrances. There’s flying, dazzling colour, and the intrinsically genius use of size and perspective to create a stampede and show the wildebeest getting closer. Heck, even Bury market gets a mention - I kid you not! This show is a spectacle, and each number brings a new level of magic, excitement and wonder to the stage. It will blow your winter socks off. “Be Prepared” by Scar is one of my favourites for it is such a pivotal moment and you feel this deep in your core from the shivers down your spine, to the hairs on your arms standing to attention. It’s difficult to explain as the whole show ignites all of your senses, and then a few more you didn’t even know you had!

Jean-Luc Guizonne (international Lion King tours, Chicago, Moana) is thoroughly stunning, commanding, and regal as Mufasa. His rich deep voice grasps you by the heart and his stage presence is definitely fit for a King. Its hard to take your eyes off him. Richard Hurst (The Bodyguard, Sunny Afternoon, Eastenders) is outstanding as Scar and his dry, dark cynicism drips deliciously from his every word and move. He embodies the character with every nuance of his being. They make for a thrilling combination during their scenes together, complimenting each other through their contrasting character qualities. Thandazile Soni (international Lion King tours) is incredible as Rafiki. The click language used (Xhosa - a Nguni Bantu language and one of the official languages of South Africa) is hypnotic in quality and I could have listened to far more. Loveable, wise, funny and with an air of something that quite frankly transcends words, you can’t take your eyes off her either. Matthew Forbes (War Horse, The Good Life, The Wizard Of Oz) blew my mind with his utterly convincing puppetry as Zazu and his relentless energy throughout. His voice alone draws you in, and a British humour shone through. Alan McHale (The Clockmakers Daughter, Oliver With A Twist, Macbeth) and Carl Sanderson (Sweet Charity, That Day We Sang, 42nd Street) are comedy gold as Timon and Pumbaa. Again, their puppetry was phenomenal. They know exactly how to work an audience and gained the most giggles from the children in the audience. Stephenson Ardern-Sodjet (Hamilton, As You Like It, Macbeth) is enchanting as Simba and Nokwanda Khuzwayo (The Lion King international, How Long Musical) is mesmerising and powerful as Nala. The duo are playful and powerful, gentle and fierce, and their cat like moves are purrfect (sorry!). Their duets are sublime, their solos stunning. They leap across the stage with such ease, making it look so easy you start to believe you can do it yourself – until reality kicks in and you trip over your merchandise bag just standing up to applaud! Rebecca Omogbehin, Simon Trinder , and Owain Rhys Davies blend brilliantly to create the hilarious hyenas and will have you belly laughing at their escapades. This costume, more than any other, had me transfixed and their agility in making it so believable should be applauded. The young Simba and Nala matched the professional standard of every adult on the stage and it was a pleasure to witness our future West end leads in the making. The entire ensemble is out of this world, and if you ever needed proof – their acapella opening of the second act will leave you in no doubt.

And even with all of that - I’m still not finished! Throw in acrobatics, stilt walking, incredible costumes - each entirely unique and a work of art in itself, African drums played within the theatre itself creating a surround sound feel, humour, heartache, pathos, acceptance, and you’ll come out feeling inspired, invigorated and like you’ve had the best free therapy ever because the show is jam packed with so much awe, so much life that it not only entertains to the highest standards, but it offers a gentle and safe way to deal with some of lifes biggest heartaches such as grief, self-doubt, betrayal, responsibility, values and strength during adversity. The Lion King encourages you to find strength and belief in yourself and your abilities. What a gift of a show.

I am thrilled and honoured that I have been lucky enough to watch The Lion King this evening and am beside myself that I am coming again with my family in December. But with an extended run till 11th March 2023, I make absolutely no promise that this will be my last visit to the African pride lands, and feel a rebirth of my nephews favourite game returning as we recreate the numerous scenes! I am certainly feeling the love tonight, so Long live the King!

& Juliet, a runaway Broadway and West End hit musical, is returning to Manchester next year, with tickets on sale today.

The musical reimagines Shakespeare’s iconic love story from a new angle – what would have become of Juliet if she’d given up on Romeo before their tragic ending?

Audiences are whisked away on a journey that shows Juliet’s life if she’d skipped her famous ending for a second chance at life and love, created by the Emmy-winning writer from Schitt’s Creek.

And with a soundtrack that includes Max Martin-written hits like Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time, Katy Perry’s Roar, and chart toppers Since U Been Gone, It’s My Life, I Want It That Way, and Can’t Stop the Feeling!, it’s clear why the theatre production has been such a success.

& Juliet first premiered here in Manchester back in 2019 before pitching up at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre and the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Broadway.

In that time, it has won Olivier and WhatsOnStage Awards, and earned Tony Award nominations.

And now the musical & Juliet is heading back to the stage where it all began, visiting Manchester’s Opera House Theatre as part of a new UK tour.

It will return to the city from 8 July 2024 before heading to Southampton, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff, Nottingham, Leeds and more.

& JULIET is directed by Luke Sheppard (In the Heights, Rent, Little Big Things), with a Book by David West Read (Schitt’s Creek), choreography by Jennifer Weber and set design by Soutra Gilmour.

Music is by Max Martin & Friends, costume design by Paloma Young, musical supervision, orchestration and arrangements by Bill Sherman, lighting design by Howard Hudson, sound design by Gareth Owen, video & projection design by Andrzej Goulding, hair, wig and makeup design by Suzy Barrett, musical direction, additional arrangements and orchestrations by Dominic Fallacaro, and casting direction by Stuart Burt.

& Juliet will be at the Opera House Manchester theatre between 8 and 20 July.

One of the best-loved musicals of all time is set to return to the stage in Manchester on its UK tour next year.

Two decades after the world premiere in Bristol, and subsequent record-breaking run of productions around the world ever since, it’s now been announced that Mary Poppins is set to fly back to Manchester next April.

Direct from the West End and stopping off in our city as part of a UK-wide tour, the classic multi award-winning musical will be landing on stage at the iconic Palace Theatre from 9 April – 17 May 2025.

Australian stars , Stefanie Jones and Jack Chambers, are both set to reprise their roles as Mary Poppins and Bert in the 2024/25 UK and Ireland tour, after having both received critical acclaim and nightly standing ovations for their performances in the recent Australian production.

This award-winning West End musical comes from the legendary theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh, and the Disney Theatrical Group.

In case you’re somehow unfamiliar with Mary Poppins, this production is based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney film, and tells the beloved story of the world’s favourite nanny arriving on Cherry Tree Lane.

The show is set to be “more magical than ever before”, and will feature dazzling choreography, incredible effects, and all the unforgettable songs we know and love.

The production has original music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, with new songs and additional music and lyrics also featuring too.

The book comes from Julian Fellowes, dance and vocal arrangements are by George Stiles, co-choreography is by Matthew Bourne and Stephen Mear, sound design is by Paul Gatehouse, lighting is by Hugh Vanstone, and the set and costume designs are by Bob Crowley.

Mary Poppins will be live at the Palace Theatre Manchester from 9 April – 17 May 2025, and tickets are set to go on general sale next Monday (18 March) at 10am.

A new production of smash hit musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is heading to Manchester next year as part of its UK tour.

The truly scrumptious tale, which is centred around a magical flying car, has announced a run of shows at the Palace Theatre.

Audiences will be whisked on a fantastical adventure to far-away lands, with inventor Caractacus Potts and his children Jemima and Jeremy, plus the beautiful Truly Scrumptious.

This brand new production comes from David Ian for Crossroads Live, and will have Emmerdale star Liam Fox starring as Grandpa Potts.

Liam is best-known for his soap character Dan Spencer, but has also appeared in Dancing on the Edge, Cold Feet, Coronation Street, Hollyoaks, Clocking Off, A Touch of Frost, Always and Everyone, At Home with the Braithwaites and Dinnerladies, as well as theatre productions.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang the musical is based on Ian Fleming’s timeless children’s story, which was later made into the 1968 film starring Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes.

Songs by the Sherman Brothers include Toot Sweets, Hushabye Mountain, Truly Scrumptious and the Academy Award-nominated title song, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will be in Manchester at the Palace Theatre between 11 and 16 March, 2025.

Paul Reiser

Comedian, actor, television writer, author and musician  Paul Reiser  is one of Hollywood’s most prolific creatives—and he shows no signs of slowing down.

Reiser is starring in two hit shows for Netflix: Stranger Things as Dr. Sam Owens, in a role created by the Duffer Brothers specifically for Reiser, and Chuck Lorre’s The Kominsky Method, for which he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Reiser received rave reviews for the latter, where he delivered a moving soliloquy on life and loss in a scene that MediaPost says “will stand… as one of the finest moments seen anywhere on television.” Reiser returned for the third and final season of The Kominsky Method, streaming now on Netflix. The multi-faceted actor also revived one of his most iconic roles in the highly-anticipated return of Mad About You, the long-running hit 90s comedy Reiser co-created and starred in with Helen Hunt. With Kevin De Bruyne in this mood, Arsenal and Liverpool must be worried

With Kevin De Bruyne in this kind of form, Manchester City’s Premier League title rivals should be worried.

City’s very own ‘King Kev’ clearly wants an unprecedented fourth successive league crown and only a brave man would bet against him getting it, however good Liverpool and Arsenal have been.

Not only did De Bruyne take his City goal tally in all competitions to 100 with two against Crystal Palace, the first of which was a thing of beauty, the Belgian also provided an assist for Erling Haaland to boost the striker’s confidence at just the right time.

De Bruyne purred his way through the game, linking superbly with Jack Grealish time and time again, to show he is more than ready for the run-in.

Having watched from the bench as Phil Foden scored a superb hat-trick against Aston Villa three days earlier, it was De Bruyne’s turn to shine at Selhurst Park.

Asked if Foden’s hat-trick had put pressure on him to perform, De Bruyne replied: “Yeah, these guys keep me on my toes. I don’t expect to just be given my place. If I don’t perform well, I won’t play. Phil Foden has been amazing this season so deserves it, but it keeps me on my toes.

“I just try to be more of an example with the way I am on the pitch. I won’t be the person to tell others how to live their lives, but I try to show on the pitch. I have played with Phil [Foden] for seven or eight years now so I don’t feel like he is a youngster anymore. He is an established superstar in our team. He is just amazing.”

Pep Guardiola did not need to call on Foden at all with a Champions League game against Real Madrid to come on Tuesday night, while Bernardo Silva was only needed in time added on for stoppages.

For 45 minutes against Palace, there was some encouragement for Liverpool and Arsenal, but by full-time there were ominous signs that City could be gearing up to steamroller their way through the remainder of their league fixtures.

Grealish was involved in three of City’s goals, assisting for Rico Lewis to score his second league goal for the club, having netted his first in the corresponding fixture against Palace earlier this season.

Not everything went to plan for City, whose defending was sloppy for both of the Palace goals, from Jean-Philippe Mateta and substitute Odsonne Edouard, and could have been punished further by Jordan Ayew, who hit the crossbar.

But City have now scored eight goals in two games with Foden and De Bruyne taking it in turns to produce match-winning performances, and have not lost since the start of December.

Palace took a shock early lead thanks to a mistake from John Stones, who lost the ball and then saw it played behind him by Adam Wharton for Mateta to score with a shot that rebounded into the net off the post.

But then it became the De Bruyne show, as the 32-year-old scored a superb equaliser, almost from nothing, as he cut in from the left and curled an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net. No wonder Guardiola responded by blowing kisses at him from the touchline.

Haaland should then have done better after being put through on goal by a brilliant De Bruyne pass, but Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson saved with his foot.

Rodri did not enjoy his best 45 minutes in a City shirt during the first half. He had his pocket picked before Ayew hit the crossbar and played a poor back pass to goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, who Cruyff turned his way past Mateta and out of trouble.

City needed a better start to the second half and they got it. Grealish crossed from the left and the ball was headed into the path of Lewis, who controlled it and fired a shot into the net via a slight deflection.

Grealish has suffered a frustrating season, but enjoyed himself at Selhurst Park. He stepped inside with the ball in the 66th minute before passing down the left for De Bruyne, whose cross was diverted into the net by Haaland for his 30th goal of the season.

De Bruyne has assisted 17 of Haaland’s City goals, which is the most from one Premier League player to another since the start of last season.

Having netted his 99th City goal in the first half, De Bruyne brought up the century with 20 minutes remaining. He linked up with Grealish, who passed to Rodri and the Spaniard pulled the ball back for De Bruyne to beat Henderson.

That was the cue for Guardiola to give Rodri a rest for 15 minutes or so, presumably with the Madrid game in mind, but the City head coach was frustrated his team conceded a second goal late on.

Palace substitutes Jeffery Schlupp and Edouard linked up for Edouard to score, but the game was already over by then and Liverpool and Arsenal fans were already starting their tension levels rise.

Job done for City. After a first half during which the hosts were more than up for the challenge and the draw, Pep made that change on the left and thanks to a De Bruyne masterclass they ran away with it. They can focus on Madrid now, knowing they’ve put the pressure on Liverpool and Arsenal.

Haaland with simple one-touch finish. 

Thought a goal was coming and when City move the ball like this you’re not Mystic Meg if your prediction comes true. Grealish has the ball inside the box on the left, has dances towards the six-yard box, De Bruyne makes a run to the byline, he’s found by Grealish, hits the ball across the box, and it’s an easy finish from cyborg striker. 

That was attacking, passing football at its simple, effective best.

Collectors item: Poor half from Rodri

Rodri did not enjoy that half: it was not one of his better first 45 minutes for City. He had the ball nicked off him by Jordan Ayew, who hit the bar. And it was a poor backpass from the midfielder that forced Stefan Ortega to brilliantly Cruyff turn his way past Mateta and out of trouble.

Good, entertaining half of football that. Palace are well worth heading into the break level - they’ve made like tough for City, defended well and look dangerous in transition in the visitors’ half. That will make it an interesting team talk for Pep. 

Credit to Palace these past few minutes and this entire half. They’ve come back into it in terms of possession and have asked questions of the City backline. Throughout the half the hosts have defended resolutely and the title chasers haven’t had everything go their way.

Remarkable.

The City midfield metronome has the ball stolen from him by Ayew  inside his own half. Should have done better...chances such as that one will be few and far between.

Lefty Grealish

One thing that gets forgotten when people ask ‘where’s the Grealish of Aston Villa gone?’ is the fact he didn’t play on the left for Villa. Grealish played his best football at Villa under Dean Smith in the centre of midfield, as a number eight, where he was always involved and could drift left or right. He has far less licence to do that with City.

De Bruyne in dominant mood

Kevin De Bruyne is in the mood today. He scored his first Premier League goal since January to level the scores and created a great chance for Erling Haaland, who should have given City the lead. Jack Grealish has also been lively on the left, winning free-kicks and corners.

From the resulting set piece Ward is again to the fore getting in ahead of any City attacker to concede another corner. 

From that corner it’s a case of ‘ copy and paste ’ as Ward again beats the visitors to the ball. 

Did I say the Palace defender was having a good game? He’s been immense so far.

Pep blew his Belgian captain a kiss during the celebrations.  I suspect partly because it was such a fine strike, but also, I suspect, because it justified the ‘controversial’ swap.

More City pressure in and around the Palace box sees the hosts defend well but the ball comes out to Rodri who hits a half-volley first time, the attempt is creeping into the far corner of the net but Henderson dives low to his left and gets a vital hand to it.

No pressure City...Pep tells City ‘drop points today and forget title glory’

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City’s bid for an unprecedented fourth Premier League title will effectively be over if the champions drop points against Crystal Palace today.

The City manager has warned his players that there is no margin for error at Selhurst Park amid the opportunity to draw level on points with Liverpool and put some pressure on the leaders and second-placed Arsenal.

“We’re third, not far away from the top of the Premier League, but if we drop points it will be almost impossible,” said Guardiola. “So we have to win that game and after that we will have more time, not for recovery, but to prepare [for Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday].

“So I have not had much time to see Real Madrid. I said, when we have been fighting for nine or 10 months for the Premier League, why should I be distracted now from this important game against Palace, when the distance is so close.”

City ended their long wait to win the Champions League last year and are the favourites to retain the trophy this season.

But Guardiola - whose side face Real in the first leg of their quarter-final at the Bernabeu on Tuesday - said the priority for him remains the Premier League title as City eye a sixth crown in seven seasons.

“I love it [the Premier League],” he said. “Of the domestic trophies, it is the most important – Premier League or La Liga. I’m not going to say the Champions League is not nice, of course it is.

“So now we have it and know how it feels in our soul and we are at peace, for the fact we’ve got it. But it’s just the nicest [the Premier League] because it’s more difficult, there are more games, you know every week, two or three games.

“The Champions League, of course, is important, but it depends on something you perhaps can’t control. Both are incredibly important, but the Premier League proves a lot. It shows the mentality of the teams.”

“It was difficult, but it’s not just him. It’s always tough with all the guys. But there are a lot of players and a lot of minutes  and that’s why we decided [to start on bench]. We need [the players] fresh, I would love to have him on the pitch, but there are a lot of games and a lot of players.”

On whether this is the first time he’s been involved in a three-horse race for the title...

“Yes...in Spain it was always Barcelona and Real Madrid, in Germany always Bayern, and here it’s always [just been] two teams.”

On what he’s expecting from Palace today...

“Good structure, five at the back, good transistions. We always struggle against Palace, even at home.”

If asked which teams have given City problems recently...

...Crystal Palace may not be on the tip of your tongue. But the south Londoners have a half-decent record against Pep’s players having picked up five points from their past five meetings. City also rarely take Palace to the cleaners as they have done to other (apologies to those who may be about to be caused some offence...) small-just-hope-to-stay-up teams. So it’s little surprise to hear Guardiola tell his side to forget Real for now and focus on the battle in store at Selhurst Park. 

Big match preview: ‘Focus is on Palace, not Real’

Pep Guardiola is refusing to look beyond Manchester City’s visit to Crystal Palace today, despite Real Madrid looming, as a Selhurst Park slip-up would leave their Premier League title hopes in tatters.

A win for City in today’s lunchtime kick-off will move them level on points with leaders Liverpool, who head to Old Trafford for a clash with arch rivals Manchester United tomorrow afternoon.

Guardiola accepts a draw or defeat would all but end their aim of claiming a fourth-successive title so even the prospect of a trip to the Spanish capital on Tuesday evening will not divert his attention.

City are also defending their Champions League crown and take on Carlo Ancelotti’s side in the quarter-final first leg but Guardiola will only start thinking about the clash after facing Palace.

“Honestly, if we were 18 points in front of second in the Premier League, I would have two eyes on Madrid but it’s not the case,” Guardiola said.

Guardiola is mulling over whether to restore Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne to his starting line-up in south London after benching the pair in the 4-1 midweek victory over Aston Villa.

City will be favourites to beat a side that have claimed just two points from their last 12 and sit 14th in the table but Palace hit back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium in mid-December.

Guardiola, who could welcome back goalkeeper Ederson this weekend but will be continue to be without defenders Kyle Walker and Nathan Ake, is aware he cannot take the threat of the Eagles lightly if City are to remain in contention for a trophy he continues to prize above all others.

“He’s a contender like many others, many players play a good season,” Guardiola added. “He can be a contender for sure.”

The Caitlin Clark phenomenon hasn’t spared sports bettors.

The Iowa Hawkeyes superstar is the most popular college basketball player to gamble on – on the men’s or women’s side – ahead of this weekend’s Final Four action.

The Over on Clark’s points (33.5), three-pointers (5.5), and assists (9.5) are the three most popular props at BetMGM Sportsbook .

BetMGM reported Friday that Clark’s Over points and Over made 3-pointers are attracting more tickets than any other men’s props.

It’s the second straight round gamblers are betting on a big game for Clark.

In Monday night’s Elite Eight bout between LSU and Iowa, more than 70 percent of bets at BetMGM were on Clark to go Over her points, 3-pointers, rebounds and assists props.

As a team, the Hawkeyes are getting a ton of love from sports bettors as well.

As 2.5-point favorites over the UConn Huskies, Iowa is getting 84 percent of bets and 88 percent of the handle at BetMGM.

Earlier this week, it was reported that nearly a third of tickets (33.2 percent) at BetMGM were on Iowa to win the national championship, which was by far the most at the sportsbook.

Clark’s Final Four props are another sign of women’s college basketball’s growing popularity among sports bettors.

Monday night’s game was the most-bet women’s sporting event in the sportsbook’s history, according to BetMGM.

The contest was also the most-bet event of the day at both FanDuel and BetMGM, outpacing the NBA, MLB, NHL and all other sports.

The South Carolina Gamecocks, who will take on NC State as an 11.5-point favorite on Friday, are the favorites to win the title at -200.
