Valle de Bravo has beautiful places like the Plaza de Los Tres Árboles, the Mirador de la Capilla, and the Embarcadero, where you can rent boats.

The streets are covered with cobblestones and surrounded by well-preserved colonial buildings.

In the center of the Plaza de la Independencia is the 17th-century Church of San Francisco de Asis.

In the valley is also the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, home to millions of migratory butterflies.

13. El Oro, Mexico

This Magical Town lies in an important mining zone an hour and a half north of Toluca, whose French-style constructions are testimonies to the ample wealth of the area.

Its attractions go beyond the buildings and the presence of gold, which also gives the city its name.

It also has the Brockman Dam , surrounded by forests of cedar and pine trees, ideal for spending days in the countryside and going for walks, as well as practicing sport fishing in its waters.

14. Bicentennial Towers Museum

The museum is inside a modern construction known as Bicentennial Towers, pillars erected in 2010 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Independence and the centennial of the Revolution.

The towers are located in the old Tollotzin Gate, on Paseo Tollocan. A work of 30 meters at its base and 6 meters in diameter, and 65 meters tall by the architect Guillermo Maya Lopez.

When seen from a distance, it gives the sensation of intertwining in a contemporary design with clean and simple elements in all its forms.

The silhouette of both towers suggests the path, the projection, and the direction toward the nation’s future.

The museum exhibits the history and evolution of Mexico from its beginnings as a colony to the present day.

11 TOP outdoor attractions in Toluca Mexico

1. Nevado de Toluca

Let’s start with the geographical icon of the city: the Nevado de Toluca .

One of the favorite places of visitors because it offers beautiful landscapes in summer and winter.

Its oak and coniferous forests show all their greenness during the sunny season, while the snow covers this Mexican volcano in white in the winter.

The Nevado de Toluca is 22 km from the city, with a protected area of flora and fauna of almost 47 thousand hectares.

It is the fourth tallest Mexican summit, with its peak at 4690 mts above sea level.

El Nevado de Toluca is a compound volcano that registers seismic activity and is classified as active.

Although the journey to Xinantécatl (indigenous name meaning “naked man”) can be made by car, it is more rewarding to walk along its trails, forests, and rocky areas, admiring its flora, fauna, and lagoons in the highest part.

2. Insurgente Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla National Park

Better known as “La Marquesa,” its 4790 hectares are shared by Mexico City and the State of Mexico, between the valleys of Mexico and Toluca; it is a common place for weekend recreation.

The park borders another natural attraction, such as the Desierto de Los Leones National Park, and is easily accessible by Highway 55 and Highway 15.

Its main attractions are the coniferous forests and the fauna seen in the most remote areas.

It is frequented for camping , hiking, biking, mountaineering, horseback riding, and ATV rides on closed circuits.

It has a fishing station in a building belonging to the old colonial hacienda La Marquesa.

3. Matlazincas Park

Matlazincas Park is one of Toluca’s most visited natural attractions for taking panoramic photos, exercising, and enjoying a picnic.

Other places of interest are the Museum of Natural Sciences of the State of Mexico, with its exhibits on the Universe and the Solar System, Geology, Biodiversity of the State of Mexico, Lepidoptera (butterflies) , Insects and Ecology, and the chapel of El Calvario.

4. Las Torres Linear Park

This recreational space was recovered by rehabilitating 100 thousand m2 of green areas between Paseo Cristóbal Colón and Calle General Venustiano Carranza.

The project concluded in 2019 contemplated the placement of 280 m3 of organic soil, the planting of 200 trees, including ten magueys, and the sowing of grass and ornamental plants such as lavender.

The project is part of the campaign “Together for a Green Capital,” undertaken by the city government to reforest and beautify Toluca.

5. Monte Alto State Park

Monte Alto was opened in 2013 by the state government and is 74 km southwest of Toluca in the municipality of Valle de Bravo.

The ancient Matlatzincas called it the “hill of water” because the streams created a murmur as they flowed beneath the thick vegetation.

The park’s flora includes pines, oaks, and orchids in the wetlands, while hawks, sparrows, vultures, owls, rabbits, and squirrels represent the fauna.

The park is made up of three volcanoes whose erosion formed steep slopes on three of the four sides (north, south, and west) , while on the east, the topography softens and extends towards the Acatitlán Valley .

These volcanoes expelled large masses of basaltic rocks during their activity in the Mesozoic Era, creating formations such as Cerro Pelón.

6. Nanchititla Sierra Park

The park in the Cañadas de Nanchititla , in the jurisdiction of the municipalities of Tejupilco and Luvianos, is around 150 km southwest of Toluca.

This vast area comprises 68 thousand hectares and beautiful waterfalls like Las Pilas and El Salto de Nanchititla.

The Nahua word “Nanchititla” means “place of the route of the Nanche,” an edible sweet fruit with a strong aroma.

The park also has mountains over 2,000 meters above sea level covered with pine and oak groves.

Several viewpoints (Filo, La Cascada, Potrero, Candelaria, and Barriales) have spectacular landscape views in these foothills.

The main activities are camping, hiking, mountain biking, zip-lining, horseback riding, rappelling, paragliding, and sport fishing.

7. Zacango Ecological Park & Zoo, near Toluca Mexico

The park’s main attraction in the municipality of Calimaya, 12 km south of Toluca Mexico, is a zoo with specimens of 136 species from all over the world.

It is located in a protected area of 159 hectares that belonged to the Counts of Santiago and Calimaya and that before had been part of the old Franciscan Hacienda of the XVI century.

Tours are on foot or aboard a little train.

The park has an aviary and areas for carnivores, herbivores, primates, reptiles (one of the country’s most important collections) , African animals, a farm, and a conservation education center.

It is one of the few sites in the country that gathers the Gabon viper, the Albino python, and the green mamba.

8. The mummy of Almoloya de Juárez

Believe it or not, a famous mummy is also a natural attraction in Toluca, mainly because its mummification occurred naturally.

I’m talking about Don José Remigio Estrada , a man from the town of Almoloya de Juárez whose body was found in 1890 in the town’s municipal cemetery in an excellent state of mummification.

It is the only known mummy in the State of Mexico.

The bodies of Mr. Estrada’s wife and three grandchildren of the couple were also mummified, but not as well as him.

The people requested that same year that the mummy be preserved as part of the local cultural heritage. It is currently on display in a showcase in the municipal presidency of Almoloya de Juarez .

The village is located in the Toluca Valley, 18 km northwest of the state capital.

9. Waterfalls and flowers of Villa Guerrero

Villa Guerrero is a municipality bordering Toluca to the north, formerly known as Tecualoya, a community founded in the seventh century by the Otomi people .

The tremendous natural attractions of Villa Guerrero are its flowers and waterfalls, the main ones being Salto Grande del Texcaltenco, La Atlaquizca, Salto del Río San Gaspar, and Salto de la Neblina.

The El Salitre hot springs and streams flowing down from the Nevado de Toluca are also attractive sites.

The town is known as the “flower capital of the state of Mexico,” and the municipality is the first in the country in flower production.

There are more than 2,700 hectares of nurseries and flower plantations where there are large quantities of chrysanthemums, carnations, roses, hydrangeas, sunflowers, and other species that cover the Mexican soil with color and beauty.

10. Estrella Bio Park

This fabulous Ecological park in the municipality of Ixtlahuaca , 87 km north of Toluca , is the country’s largest themed space and safari, covering 300 hectares with animals that roam freely.

There are more than 500 specimens of species, such as giraffes, elephants, zebras, tigers, lions, hippos, camels, and primates.

Other attractions are Jurassic River , a boat adventure where you can see impressive replicas of dinosaurs, and Subterranium , a mysterious underground ride in an electric vehicle.

There are also hiking trails, a zip-line, and a climbing wall.

Bio Parque Estrella is at km 38.5, Jilotepec, El Puerto, Ixtlahuaca de Rayón.

11. Mazahua Ceremonial Center

Ceremonial place of the Mazahua culture that combines a contemporary building built to pay homage to this ethnic group with an impressive natural beauty.

The center was built in 1980 in Santa Ana Nichi, 57 km northwest of Toluca.

It shows the history of the Mazahua culture and the handicrafts made by the indigenous people of this town, the most numerous in the states of Mexico and Michoacán.

A beautiful forest of pines and oaks surrounds the place.

Among the groves are trails and a diverse fauna comprising rabbits, squirrels, coyotes, white-tailed deer, gophers, sheep, snakes, and several species of birds.

The Best Things To Do in Toluca, Mexico

Toluca, the State of Mexico’s humble capital, is also one of the most underrated day trips from Mexico City that has plenty of non-tourist filled activities to offer to those willing to break away from the well-trodden Mexican traveller trail. It also happens to be the place that (former) President Obama visited in 2014.

But ‘what is there to do in Toluca?’ I hear you wondering. Plenty, is the answer to that; whether you enjoy hiking, botanical gardens or beautiful, colourful buildings , these are some of the best things to do in Toluca, Mexico.

THINGS TO DO IN TOLUCA, MEXICO

WHAT TO SEE + DO | WHAT TO DO NEARBY  |  HOW TO GET THERE

CLIMB THE NEVADO DE TOLUCA

I’ve written a full post about climbing this fantastic Mexican peak, which is the fourth highest in the country and also one of the top places to see snow in Mexico. Honestly, it had been on my bucket list for so long and it was definitely worth the minor car/altitude sickness that might hit you on the way up. It’s easily one of the best, most well-known and enjoyable things to do in Toluca, Mexico.

VISIT THE COSMOVITRAL JARDÍN BOTÁNICO

By far and away the best thing I saw in the city centre of Toluca was the Cosmovitral . For some reason, I’d convinced myself that this botanical garden-cum-stained glass window lover’s paradise was in Querétaro , but nope, it’s smack in the heart of Toluca. For an entry fee of just MXN$10 you can wander around at your leisure through the cactus filled section, the herb garden and the Asian plants area (featuring bamboo!).  There are water features and Instagram worthy angles everywhere you look and it’s somewhere everyone and their mum would love.

But don’t be an idiot and graffiti on the poor plants.

TRY GREEN CHORIZO AT LA VAQUITA NEGRA DEL PORTAL 

Supposedly the best place to try chorizo (Toluca’s culinary claim to fame), La Vaquita Negra del Portal was absolutely rammed full of people when we stopped by at roughly 4pm one Sunday afternoon. Keep that in mind if you’re looking for a quick lunch and fancy a famous chorizo torta (sandwich). Although, if you would rather pick up some chorizo to try later, this one-stop shop also serves as a deli where you can buy the chorizo (or cheese) by weight.

I asked what the difference between the red and green chorizo was and received no conclusive answer, but we can assume there’s probably a variation in the spices used. Anyway, if you want to try both green and red chorizo in one fell swoop, I recommend you try out the torta diabla which I had as it combines the two alongside cream cheese and a bit of tomato. Spicy and delicious, it filled a hole.

As a final addition, one thing that really impressed me was that they also offer Basque txistorra (pork sausage, quite chorizo-esque) on their menu!

PHOTOGRAPH THE COLOURFUL BUILDINGS

You may have seen a viral post circulating on Facebook that talks about the most colourful places in Mexico to visit. Well, if you know the one I’m talking about, the cover photo is actually of Toluca. And it’s true, there are plenty of vibrantly painted buildings in the heart of the city for you to snap away at to your heart’s content.

However, this wasn’t always the case – the paint used to spruce up these houses (which are mainly located in one of the city’s least reputable neighbourhoods) was funded by the government in anticipation of the Obama visit way back in 2014, when all was right with the world and Trump wasn’t the leader of the free world. It caused some controversy , especially with residents who claimed it would never have been done were Obama not stopping by. Either way, take photos all you want but venturing into the web of painted houses isn’t worth it, because, well, they’re just houses.

STOP BY THE MUSEO TORRES BICENTENARIO

I didn’t manage to make it to Museo Torres Bicentenario when I paid my flying visit to the city of Toluca, but I have it on good authority that it makes for a pretty decent visit. And even if museums aren’t reaaaally your thing, like me , the architecture of the building is at least minorly impressive.

VISIT ONE OF THE MANY CHURCHES

A good church picture never goes amiss, and Toluca has plenty of photographic material to offer in that sense, whether from the yellow Iglesia del Carmen which is next to the Cosmovitral, to the Cathedral, a weirdly austere but beautiful looking offering. Alternatively, you can make the journey to El Calvario which lies in Parque Matlatzincas .

WHAT TO DO NEARBY TOLUCA

Toluca is great and there’s a handful of excellent things to do in the city centre, but if you’re wondering what to do in Toluca and beyond, then there are a few little towns that could also be worth adding to your list. Please note, I’ve sadly yet to visit them, but they each offer something unique and are well worth adding to your Mexico itinerary!

The home of one of Mexico’s most famous pieces of folk art, the Tree of Life sculptures, Metepec is another destination that could take your fancy while you’re down near Toluca. It’s only about 15 minutes from the city and you can pick up some of the highly elaborate and detailed á rboles de la vida to take home as a unique souvenir for yourself or loved ones. If you want to get there from Toluca, you can either drive, order an Uber, or grab a bus, but it’s worth asking around the locals who can point you in the right direction.

VALLE DE BRAVO

Holiday home central for Mexico City’s wealthy workers, Valle de Bravo is also one of the 111 pueblos mágicos in the country and is around an hour away by car, taxi or Uber from Toluca. Again, I have it on good authority that this is a really lovely, picturesque place to visit and it’s definitely somewhere I’ll be trying to get to before I have to leave Mexico. If you want to get there by bus, you can add another 30 minutes on to your journey (buses depart for Valle de Bravo from the Terminal de Toluca every half hour with the Autobuses Zina line)

HOW TO GET TO TOLUCA, MEXICO

First job, find a friend who lives in Toluca and who also has a car. If that can’t be achieved, then head through Santa Fe (a.k.a. the Mordor of Mexico City) and follow the signs for Toluca. You’ll be taken past the entrance to popular national park La Marquesa and from there you literally just follow the very intuitive route and signs that point you towards Toluca. In the centre, there are plenty of secure car parks for which you pay by the hour.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT  

If you don’t fancy driving and can’t find anyone to give you a lift then you can always grab a bus from literally any of Mexico City’s bus stations, although Poniente and Terminales del Norte are probably your best options. Either go on one of the cheaper (~MXN$80) services that leave frighteningly often, or pay ~MXN$200 for a swankier ETN service route, that leave less often.

The city of Toluca de Lerdo is the capital of the State of Mexico, it is located just over 60 kilometers away from Mexico City. Whether you make a return trip the same day or stay in the city for several days to explore it calmly, here we’ll tell you about 5 places to visit in Toluca Mexico, this would be our starting point to know the zone.

• By plane: the Lic. Adolfo López Mateos International Airport is located 16 km from the city. Currently, it seems, it does not receive international flights. As for domestic flights, you can fly to Toluca from: Cancun, Guadalajara, Huatulco, Puerto Vallarta, San José del Cabo, Tijuana, Merida , Monterrey and Querétaro.
• By bus: you can take a bus from both Terminal Poniente (Observatorio) or Central Norte, with the latter the trip will be longer.

The Cathedral is located in the very center of the city, south of the Plaza de los Martires. It is the seat of the Diocese of Toluca, and was built between 1867 and 1978 in what was previously the Franciscan Asunción de María convent, built in the 16th century.

Saint Joseph, who is the patron saint of the city, is venerated in the cathedral.

It is the largest collection of arches in the country, it has about 120. When going through them, you will see various shops and restaurants for all palates. Its construction took place in 1832, this when the city of Toluca was designated the capital of the State of Mexico, ending in 1917.

The Cosmovitral is located in a huge building that once had the September 16 Market . When this was relocated, stained-glass windows were created in the windows. It currently has 71 stained-glass windows (about 3,000 square meters) which makes it the largest non-religious stained-glass window in the world.

The author of this enormous work is the Mexican artist Leopoldo Flores. In terms of plants, it is not far behind and has 400 species of plants from Mexico and the world.

About 10 kilometers northwest of Toluca is the archaeological site of Calixtlahuaca, which was a ceremonial center for the Matlatzinca Indians.

Calixtlahuaca is a word of Nahuatl origin, where calli means house, and ixtlahuatl has the meaning of plain, so it can be translated as houses on the plain .

On the site there are buildings dedicated to Quetzalcoatl and Tlaloc, with which it can be deduced that there was influence of the Teotihuacan and Toltec cultures in the place.

Hours: 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM Ticket price: 65 pesos (on Sundays it is free for Mexicans and 55 pesos for foreigners)

It has a Site Museum (under the administration of the Toluca City Council) which, according to the official site , tells us that it has restrooms, a wardrobe, parking, custody and surveillance.

This is the activity that will probably make you look for a lodging in Toluca, since a visit to the famous mountain will occupy a good part of the day, if not all. The Nevado de Toluca is a symbol, and it is the fourth-largest mountain in all of Mexico, it has a height of 4680 meters above sea level. Many flock to it for hiking, climbing, and outdoor backcountry adventures.

Consider that this mountain is also a volcano that is still active, there is no reason to be alarmed as long as the authorities say that you can visit it, there is no problem. In addition to the volcano, there are two lagoons, and it is a place of preference, you should not miss it on your visit to Toluca and the State of Mexico.

This list is small, we know. In our case, it is almost like a letter asking for Christmas gifts because we haven’t had the opportunity to spend time in this city. We have only gone through the route from Santa Fe to Toluca Airport and when visiting Tula, we passed through the State of Mexico, but without being able to stop, due to an error when choosing the bus terminal.

6 alternative and arty ways to discover Mexico City culture

Amid art deco architecture and Frida Kahlo’s creations, find Mexico City’s pre-Hispanic traditions and an Indigenous crafts scene.

Mexico’s sprawling capital is a gateway to the country’s Maya ruins, miles of beaches, rocky canyons and traditional Indigenous villages. But many travellers find the metropolis has an allure all of its own, and a handful of days can be well spent touring its neighbourhoods and historic centre. Mexico’s best museums are here, and its many galleries and markets help facilitate one of the strongest creative scenes in Latin America. Dig a little deeper to find the city’s pre-Hispanic roots, and discover how many customs are linked to the ancient Aztec and Maya civilisations.

1. Kayak the ancient canals of Xochimilco

Before the Spanish conquest in 1521, Mexico City, then called Tenochtitlán, was built on two small islands inside Lake Texcoco. The Aztecs built canals and floating farms called chinampas to feed its growing population. Today, all that remains of these ancient waterways are in Tláhuac and Xochimilco, a neighbourhood 15 miles south of Mexico City’s Centro Histórico. Flat-bottomed party boats called trajineras cruise Xochimilco’s canals daily, but a guided kayaking trip provides a more tranquil — and environmentally friendly — visit. Tours offer the chance to spot Xochimilco’s wildlife, including the critically endangered axolotl salamander and more than 200 bird species, while learning about the history and science behind chinampas, which still provide food for Mexico City residents.

2. Browse the Museo de Arte Popular

In the historic centre of Mexico City is the Museo de Arte Popular , a beautifully designed handicraft museum housed inside a 1920s art deco building. The museum, which once served as Mexico City’s fire department headquarters, celebrates traditional Mexican craft in all its forms, from textiles and pottery to children’s toys, furniture and giant alebrijes — mythical creatures made from wood or papier-mache. High-quality crafts from almost every Mexican state are displayed thematically over several floors, including ceramics from Jalisco, piñatas from Puebla and ceremonial masks from Chiapas. Particularly striking are the small but impressive Day of the Dead craft collection and the á rbol de la vida (tree of life) pieces – colourful, intricate clay sculptures depicting the creation of life.

3. Sip on pulque, the drink of the Aztec gods

Pulque is a drink made from the fermented sap of agave, the same plant used to make tequila and mezcal. It has been drunk for more than 2,000 years, making it Mexico’s oldest alcoholic beverage. During the Aztec empire, pulque was considered a sacred drink, reserved for gods, emperors and ceremonial events. The introduction of beer and distilled spirits by the Spanish in the 16th century marked the beginning of the end for pulque, with many of Mexico City’s pulquerias — taverns specialising in the drink — closing between the early 20th and 21st centuries. But a recent resurgence has seen several reopen across the city, making it one of the best places in Mexico to try the tipple. La Canica — a pulqueria in the Tabacalera neighbourhood run by a family that has been in the pulque business for five generations — takes a modern approach to the ancient drink, infusing freshly made pulque with dozens of seasonal flavours, from guava and mandarin to marzipan and toasted oats.

4. Try Mexico City’s ancient caviar

Ahuautle — which loosely translates to ‘seeds of joy’ in the ancient Nahuatl language and are also known as ‘water fly eggs’ — were sacred to the Aztecs. During the rainy season, a type of water fly called axayácatl would lay its eggs in Lake Texcoco. These were harvested for Aztec emperors and used as offerings to the gods. Montezuma, one of the last emperors of the Aztec empire, is said to have eaten them every morning to improve his strength. Hard to get hold of and up to four times more expensive a kilogram than beef, the eggs have been dubbed ahuautle , the ‘caviar’ of Mexico, by the capital’s chefs. Only a handful of restaurants in the capital still serve ahuautle, one of which is Ayluardo’s — in the Iztapalapa neighbourhood, in the east of Mexico City. It serves the water fly eggs — which taste intensely fishy, similar to dried shrimp — in pancakes with tomatillo (a bright green, acidic fruit native to Mexico) and serrano chilli sauce.

5. Support indigenous crafts at Mercado de Artesanías de la Ciudadela

Just a few minutes’ walk from Museo de Arte Popular is this hub for artisans, Mexico City’s largest and best arts and crafts market. It is home to 350 stands selling a huge variety of crafts, or artesanias in Spanish, from all over Mexico, including handblown glass from Jalisco, silver jewellery from Guerrero and patterned chaquira beadwork from Jalisco, crafted by the indigenous Huichol people. For beautiful ceremonial Mayan masks made of wood and obsidian, head to stand 104, where you’ll often see the craftspeople at work. Also seek out the artisans selling amate — colourful works painted on to paper made from the pulp of fig and mulberry trees; the same type of paper was once used by the ancient Aztecs and Mayas to produce manuscripts.

6. Experience Mexican folk dance at El Ballet Folklórico de México

Founded in 1952 by choreographer and dancer Amalia Hernández, Ballet Folklórico celebrates Mexico’s diverse folklore traditions through dance, music and traditional dress. The performances take audiences from Mexico’s ancient past up to the revolution in 1910, travelling through the states of Oaxaca, Jalisco, Sonora, Zacatecas, Guerrero and more. Many of the dances take inspiration from Mexico’s Indigenous cultures, such as the Deer Dance (a contemporary piece that depicts a pre-hunting ritual practised by the Indigenous people of Sonora and Sinaloa) and the Guelaguetza, a folkloric ballet inspired by the ceremonial dances of the Mixtec and Zapotec people of Oaxaca. Performances are held at the Palacio de Bellas Artes — a white-marbled, art nouveau palace commissioned by President Porfirio Díaz in 1905 — on Wednesdays at 8.30pm and Sundays at 9.30am and 8.30pm.
