Port Canaveral Rental Cars: Guide to Renting a Vehicle for Your Cruise

Renting a car in Port Canaveral can be a smart decision, whether you are departing on your cruise from the area or visiting during a call on the port.

Cape Canaveral rental car

As one of the busiest cruise ports in the United States — and a popular call on cruises sailing from the East Coast — the area surrounding the port has lots to offer. From beaches to theme parks to museums and more, there is an amazing number of things to do.

The only issue? Getting around the area. Unlike many ports located in the heart of a city, there’s not much within walking distance of where the ships dock. Meanwhile, the drive to Orlando is about 45-60 minutes. Even nearby beaches will need to be reached by car for most people visiting the port.

Fortunately, there are a number of options for car rentals when visiting Port Canaveral, Cape Canaveral, and Cocoa Beach. Here’s what to know…

Note: This article contains affiliate links to KAYAK. We earn commission for clicks made on their website at no cost to you.

Why Should I Rent a Car in Cape Canaveral?

You have a number of options on getting around the port area and even to Orlando. Uber, Lyft, taxis, and independent shuttles can all get you back and forth for a reasonable price. So why even bother with a rental? There are several reasons to consider…

Cost Savings: Depending on your itinerary, renting a car can save you money. For instance, say you are in the area and want to Uber from the port to the nearby Kennedy Space Center, then somewhere near the beach for lunch, and then back to the ship. The costs of individual rides can quickly add up. If the rental rate is low enough, you will likely save money on getting around.

Convenience: There’s also something to be said about the convenience of not having to wait on a ride or having to wait on the schedule of a shuttle service. While things like Uber, Lyft, and taxis are fairly convenient, you do have to wait on a ride, which can vary based on availability. If your time is valuable, you can’t beat having your own car.

Freedom: Hand-in-hand with convenience is the freedom that having your own car can provide. For instance, cruise shuttles only go from one point to another like the airport to the cruise port. Want to make a stop? Too bad.

But with a rental car you can head where you want, when you want. So if you want to head to one restaurant and then change your mind on the way there, no big deal. See a shop you want to stop? Having a rental means you can do that.

What Rental Car Companies Are Available in Port Canaveral?

While the Port Canaveral/Cape Canaveral area isn’t that big population-wise, it is huge when catering to tourism. That means you have plenty of options when it comes to a rental company. Most major car rental agencies have a branch nearby.

All of the following companies have offices in the area:

  • Enterprise (Located at Port)
  • National (Located at Port)
  • Alamo (Located at Port)
  • Budget Car Rental (1.5 miles away)
  • Avis (2.5 miles away)

(We suggest searching a site like KAYAK or CostcoTravel.com to see all your options in one place.)

How Do I Get To/From The Car Rental Agency And The Ship?

First the good news is that there are several rental agencies located at the port, including large names like Enterprise, National, and Alamo. The only issue is that even with a spot at the port, it can still be a considerable distance given the size of the port and the number of terminals. A walk from Cruise Terminal 6 to Enterprise/National/Alamo is roughly two miles.

Thankfully, with the rental agencies catering to cruise passengers, they offer shuttles back and forth from the agency to the cruise ships. So you can arrive on a ship, get a ride to the rental agency, and then pick up your car. As well, you can rent a car and return it to the agency, then catch a ride over to your cruise.

For instance, a call to Enterprise told us that the shuttle to the rental agency from the cruise terminals runs about every 25 minutes.

When you depart your ship, just follow the signs pointing to the area to pick up a shuttle to the rental agency.

Can I Make a One-Way Rental to/from Orlando, Miami, or Another City?

Yes. Say you’re flying into Orlando and want to rent a car for the ride over to Port Canaveral. In that case, you can rent a ride, drive anywhere you want to go, and then head over to the rental agency nearest to the port to drop off before heading to your cruise.

On the flipside, if you finish your cruise in Port Canaveral but then want to explore Orlando and all it has to do, then you can pick up a rental at the port and then drop it off in Orlando when you’re done.

This makes it much more convenient to rent when you don’t have to drop the car off in the same location.

How Much Do Port Canaveral Car Rentals Cost?

As you’d expect, rental prices can vary widely, depending on a number of factors. This includes the type of car, length of rental, rental days, and the season.

Canaveral car rental prices

In general, however, we’ve found rates around $60-80 per day for a car rental in the Orlando and Cape Canaveral area. That’s roughly the cost of a one-way Uber/Lyft ride between the Orlando airport and Port Canaveral, or less than the cost of a round-trip shuttle ride for two people between the airport and cruise port.

In other words, it’s not a bad value at all given the freedom and convenience having your own rental car affords.

Where Can I Search for Car Rentals?

There is no shortage of places to search for a car rental. Any number of websites can offer up a full list of your available options or you can book directly through the rental company.

One of our favorites to search is KAYAK.com . As a travel search engine, KAYAK looks through all the available agencies based on your dates. You can then all sort by price, vehicle size, and more. We’ve found it to be the easiest way to quickly search through all options.

You can search using the box below:

port canaveral cruise car rental

If you’re a Costco member, then you can also search for a car through CostcoTravel.com . While most people don’t think of the retailer when it comes to travel, they offer some solid deals, along with a well-known reputation for outstanding customer service. As well, we’ve found their rates to meet or beat what’s found elsewhere, with some perks like upgrades offered.

You can also search directly with the rental agency. We’ve included links to each earlier in this article.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is there to see within driving distance of the port? The Cape Canaveral area is a tourism mecca. Of course, you have Orlando about 45-60 minutes away, which offers Disney, Universal Studios, and tons of other touristy things to do and see. The Orlando airport is also a starting (or ending) point for many trips into the area.

Closer to the port you have the Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach, which is a quintessential beach town that features a pier, restaurants, souvenir shops, and tourist activities. If you’re lucky enough to time your trip with a rocket launch, they can be easily seen from the port area.

Can I rent a car just for the day? Some trips will come in and dock at Port Canaveral as a port of call instead of a departure port. In that case, you might find yourself wondering if you could rent a car to cruise around during the day.

You absolutely can. There is no rule that says you have to rent a car overnight. It’s fine to pick a car up in the morning and then return it in the afternoon before you head back to the ship.

EP includes UM/UIM coverage for bodily injury and property damage (only where required by law for property damage) in an amount equal to the minimum financial responsibility limits applicable to the Vehicle (the Primary Protection), and additional coverage, through an excess liability policy, with limits for the difference between the statutory minimum underlying limits and $100,000 per accident (for rentals commencing in New York, UM/UIM limits are $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident; for rentals commencing in Hawaii, the UM/UIM limits are $1,000,000 combined single limit) or state mandated UM/UIM limit, whichever is greater. Researching car rentals at Port Canaveral cruise port? If you’re taking a Caribbean cruise out of Port Canaveral, Florida, there are many reasons why you may want to book a rental car. Depending on your pre- or post-cruise plans, you may want to spend a few days exploring Florida’s Space Coast or simply get to and from Orlando International Airport .

Rental Car Options: Orlando MCO Airport to Port Canaveral

Will you be coming just for the cruise or will you also spend a few days pre- or post-cruise exploring Central Florida?

Just in Florida for the Cruise

Many cruise passengers arrive in Orlando International Airport (MCO), which is about 45 miles from Port Canaveral. If you are only flying there for the cruise, check out one of the many shuttle companies specializing in transportation between the airport and Port Canaveral. Most shuttle services charge between $15 and $30 per person, each way. By comparison, taking a taxi, Uber or Lyft can cost between $60 and $85, depending on the time of day. This can end up being cost effective if you’ve got several people traveling together.

The trip between Orlando International Airport and Port Canaveral normally takes about 50 minutes to an hour, but largely depends on traffic. Make sure to leave plenty of time to catch your cruise, as the ship will not wait.

Pre- or Post-Cruise Exploring

If you’re coming to Orlando for a cruise but also to explore the theme parks before or after you sail, it makes sense to rent a car at Orlando International Airport and drop it off at Port Canaveral or pick up a car at Port Canaveral and drop it off at the airport. The rental car companies have shuttles at the pier that can bring you to and from their Port Canaveral locations.

Renter may purchase Roadside Plus (RSP) from Owner for an additional fee. Cost of a replacement tire is not covered by RSP), lockout service (if the keys are locked inside the vehicle), jumpstarts, and fuel delivery service for up to 3 gallons (or equivalent liters) of fuel if Vehicle is out of fuel. Roadside Plus services are only available in the United States and Canada. If Renter does not purchase RSP, or RSP is invalidated as set forth above, roadside assistance will be available, but standard charges will apply. RSP does not apply in Mexico. For roadside assistance call 1-800-367-6767. In CA, KS, MO, NV and NY, keys are not covered by RSP.

Supplemental Liability Protection (SLP) is offered at the time of rental for an additional daily charge. If accepted, SLP provides the renter and authorized drivers with up to $300,000 combined single limit for third party liability claims. If the renter accepts SLP, National provides third party liability protection up to the applicable minimum financial responsibility limit and Zurich American Insurance Company provides excess third party liability insurance coverage from the applicable minimum financial responsibility limit to $300,000. This is a summary only. SLP is subject to the terms, conditions, provisions, limitations and exclusions in the supplemental rental liability insurance excess policy underwritten by Zurich American Insurance Company. The purchase of SLP is optional and not required to rent a car. The coverage provided by SLP may duplicate the renters existing coverage. National is not qualified to evaluate the adequacy of the renters existing coverage; therefore the renter should examine his or her personal insurance policies or other sources of coverage that may duplicate the coverage provided by SLP.

OWNER AND RENTER REJECT ANY ADDITIONAL UM/UIM COVERAGE TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. EP, including UM/UIM benefits is provided only when Renter or any AAD are driving the Vehicle. No claim for UM/UIM may be made due to the negligence of the driver of the Vehicle. EP coverage is in effect only while another AAD or Renter is driving the Vehicle within the United States and Canada; coverage does not apply in Mexico.  ADDITIONAL POLICY EXCLUSIONS INCLUDE: (A) BODILY INJURY OR DEATH TO RENTER, ANY AAD, OR TO THE BLOOD RELATIVES OR FAMILY OF RENTER OR AN AAD, IF SUCH RELATIVES OR FAMILY RESIDE IN THE SAME HOUSEHOLD WITH RENTER OR WITH AN AAD; (B) PROPERTY DAMAGE TO THE RENTAL VEHICLE; (C) FINES, PENALTIES, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (D) BODILY INJURY, DEATH OR PROPERTY DAMAGE EXPECTED OR INTENDED FROM THE STANDPOINT OF THE INSURED; AND (E) ANY OBLIGATION FOR WHICH THE INSURED OR THE INSURED’S INSURER MAY BE HELD LIABLE UNDER ANY WORKER’S COMPENSATION, DISABILITY BENEFITS OR UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION LAW OR ANY SIMILAR LAW. (F) BODILY INJURY OR PROPERTY DAMAGE EXPECTED OR INTENDED FROM THE STANDPOINT OF RENTER OR AADS. Note: Any UM/UIM benefits paid are included in the $1 million combined single limit EP coverage and in no way increase the combined single limit amount referenced above. This insurance coverage is underwritten by Ace American Insurance Company. Report SLP Claims to: Sedgwick CMS, P.O. Box 94950 Cleveland, OH 44101-4950, Phone: 1-888-515-3132  Fax: 1-216-617-2928.

Option 2 - We Refill

This option allows the renter to pay Enterprise at the end of the rental for gas used but not replaced. Price per gallon will be higher than local fuel prices.

Option 3- You Refill

This option allows the renter to return the vehicle with the same amount of gas as received to avoid extra fuel charges.

Driver's License Information

Customers who reside in the United States, U.S. Territories, or Canada

Customers who reside in the U.S., U.S. Territories, or Canada must present a valid, unexpired government-issued Driver’s license which includes a photograph of the customer.  Digital licenses are not accepted.  The driver's license must be valid for the entire rental period.

Members of the United States Armed Forces who are on active duty may present an expired home state license under the following conditions:

They also present an Active Military ID, and

They are in compliance with their military extension policy of the state which issued the license.  These policies vary by state and customers are encouraged to check with the appropriate department of motor vehicles for more information.

Customers renting in Florida and presenting a Connecticut or Delaware license: As of July 1, 2023, certain, but not all, licenses issued by the foregoing states are considered invalid under Florida law and will not be accepted.  Please check with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to determine if your license is valid under Florida law.  As of August 14, 2023, information regarding license validity was able to be located at the following webpage on the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website - https://www.flhsmv.gov/driver-licenses-id-cards/visiting-florida-faqs/

Customers travelling to the U.S. and Canada from other countries

It is important that customers check with the appropriate Department of Motor Vehicles in the States or Provinces in which they intend to travel to ensure compliance with their various licensing laws. Digital licenses are not accepted. The following practices are used to ensure the customer is presenting a facially valid license at the time of rental.

Customers traveling to the United States and Canada from another country must present the following:

Their home country driver’s license that is valid, unexpired and includes a photograph, and

If the home country license is in a language other than English (or French, for rentals in Canada) and the letters are English (i.e. German, Spanish, etc.) an International Driver’s Permit is recommended, but not required, for translation purposes in addition to the home country license.

If the home country license is in a language other than English and the letters are not English (i.e.alphabet is not an extended Latin-based alphabet like German or Spanish but is Russian, Japanese, Arabic, etc.) an International Driver’s Permit is required.

If an International Driver’s permit cannot be obtained in the home country, another professional, type-written translation may be substituted.  In either case the home country license must also be presented.

Customers may not rent a vehicle solely with the International Driver’s Permit.  The International Driver’s Permit is a translation of the individual’s home country license and is not considered a license nor is it considered valid identification.

  • In some US locations, customers not holding a US driver’s license may be asked to provide additional documentation.  Examples of this may include a valid passport or, in certain states (AZ, CA, CO, NM, TX) a valid Mexican voter registration card and/or inbound and outbound travel documentation.

What to do before or after your cruise from port canaveral.

By Janet K. Keeler

The act of “blasting off” is certainly an apt way to describe the action of Florida’s Space Coast, home to the Kennedy Space Center .

But Port Canaveral Cruise Por t is also taking off. Last year, nearly 7 million cruisers boarded one of the 13 ships that set sail from Port Canaveral. A fourth terminal is being built to accommodate even more travelers.

Port Canaveral is the closest of Florida’s seven cruise ports to the Orlando theme parks, including Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. That means travelers can fly into Orlando International Airport , spend a couple days in the parks, then head over to Port Canaveral, about an hour away. In fact, Disney is banking on that and has theme-park-and-cruise packages with transportation included to shuttle vacationers to its ships homeported at Port Canaveral.

Besides the theme parks, there is a variety of things to do around Port Canaveral either before or after a cruise. A novelty for many visitors is riding bikes on the hard-packed sand of Brevard County. There are loads of places in Cocoa Beach to rent bicycles by the hour and hit the sand, among them Beach Bums , A1A Beach Rentals and Village Cycle Shoppe .

Many of the bike shops also have kayaks, paddleboards plus fishing and beach gear. And surfing? They hang 10 along the Space Coast and you might want to book a lesson which usually comes with board rental. The Cocoa Beach Surf School caters to families and kids. Sebastian Inlet State Park is the epicenter of Florida competitive surfing and finding a place to watch the surfers ride the waves is a cool thing-to-do near Port Canaveral Cruise Port if you’re not ready to go all cowabunga.

Port Canaveral is near lots of small cities that have their own flavor. You could head over to the historic downtown of Melbourne and browse the unique shops then stop into Meg O’Malley’s for some serious Irish grub. Drive south to Indialantic and visit the Sea Turtle Preservation Society . North of the cruise port is Titusville and Dixie Crossroads restaurant, a favorite local spot that serves shrimp, shrimp and more shrimp and other seafood landed at the docks just miles away.

If you don’t have a car and depending on where you are staying for your extended vacation, the Brevard bus and trolley system could get you where you want to go. Tickets cost about $1.50 per ride, less if you qualify for a reduced fare or buy a multi-ride pass.

Here are four more things to do before or after a cruise from Port Canaveral.

Kennedy Space Center - Indoor

 - Merge Studios

The Space of the Space Coast

For more than 50 years, Brevard County has been the center of America’s space program and there’s no better place to experience the history than the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex . The visitors complex is every bit as much of a theme park as the ones in Orlando except there’s no roller coaster—yet. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t lots of thrills. The Rocket Garden gets you up close to some of the towering vessels that explored space, including the Mercury-Atlas which launched John Glenn’s historic mission to orbit the Earth in 1962. Like the brochure says, you really do feel like you’re walking among giants, literally and figuratively. Visitors have opportunities to meet astronauts in person. There is a shuttle simulation ride that punctuates both the excitement and danger of space travel, and astronaut training simulators , too. Don’t forget that the visitor center is part of the working space center. Look at the schedule in advance and you might be able to hear a bonafide countdown and watch a launch. You can also watch launches for free almost anywhere in the county. The beaches will be lined with folks and their binoculars.

The Natural World on Display

Just north of the cruise port is the Canaveral National Seashore , the longest stretch of undeveloped Atlantic coastline. With so much development all around, the national seashore offers a respite to the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The visitors center in New Smyrna Beach provides the history of the area and more information on things-to-do. There are 24 miles of beach and since this is Florida’s East Coast, the sunrise is a big draw. The park opens at 6 a.m. so you can get there in time for the daily sun show. The beach is also a nesting ground for protected marine turtles so you’ll need to tread lightly. Two-thirds of the park is Mosquito Lagoon , a favorite place for kayakers. Nearby is the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge , a favorite spot for birders—there are 350 species in the refuge—and photographers (keep that smartphone charged!). Even without a fancy camera you can capture photos of bald eagles and egrets. Merritt’s bird population swells from November to April as migratory birds take to the Atlantic Flyway.

The Zoo the Locals Love

The Brevard Zoo in Melbourne holds a special place in the hearts of many people who grew up on the Space Coast. They remember birthday parties, summer camps and feeding the giraffes especially. Giving nibbles to the lorikeets might come in a close second. If you’ve got young children in tow, the zoo is a wonderful spot to entertain them for at least a half a day—just remember that the giraffes take a rest on Tuesday and Thursday mornings so if you have your heart set on feeding them, plan accordingly. There are 900 animals from all around the world at the zoo, and the adventurers among you might want to kayak past the giraffes, rhinos and lemurs. The gentle train trip—it’s just 10-minutes long— past the camels might be more your wee kids’ style.

 - The Wizard of Oz Museum

Oddly, the Wizard of Oz

No, you for sure aren’t in Kansas. The new Wizard of Oz Museum in Port Canaveral is just minutes south of the cruise port. Why Florida? Mostly, the operators say, because there are so many tourists in Central Florida either going to theme parks or sailing away on cruises and they figured if they build it, they will come. The museum houses historic displays and artifacts from the making of the movie, including Dorothy’s iconic blue pinafore . But what sets this museum apart is the immersive experiences. Through modern technology, mostly laser projectors, visitors feel like they're caught in that movie’s tornado, traveling through Munchkinland or even floating in the poppy field. But wait, there’s more. The museum also houses immersive experiences via the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh and a space experience using images from the James Webb telescope. Keep an eye out for the Wicked Witch everywhere. It’s open daily and tickets are $29 for adults and $15 for kids, immersive experiences included.

Cheap car rentals at Moscow Domodedovo Airport

Top tips for renting a car at moscow domodedovo airport.

  • Car hire at Moscow Domodedovo Airport (DME) is a great option to connect directly to the city of Moscow in the comfort of your own vehicle and giving you the added advantage of being able to avoid busy public transport options, especially if you have a lot of luggage or are travelling as a group, which could also work out more economical. Situated around 25 miles from the airport, you can reach Moscow city centre in just over an hour by the A105 highway. If you are driving via the Moscow Ring Road, you should take Exit 25.
  • Moscow city and the surrounding road networks can get particularly busy, especially in the rush hour periods, which tend to fall between the hours of 08:00-10:00 in the morning and again between 17:00-19:00 in the evening rush. Weekends tend to be less busy. If you find your connection falls in the busy times, try to avoid this, if possible, by arriving earlier or taking advantage of the calmer afternoon period to return your Moscow Domodedovo Airport car hire. On your return, take the Kashira Highway in a southerly direction and merge onto the Domodedovo Airport Road, which will lead you to the terminals.
  • Moscow Domodedovo has just one terminal, so you can find several facilities on hand whilst in the airport. You can find numerous cafes, bars, and refreshments in the Arrivals hall, alongside exchange and ATM facilities. There is also a children’s centre if you are travelling as a family and several information points to assist your trip.
  • If you need to refill your fuel tank before returning your car hire at Moscow Domodedovo Airport, you can find several large 24h outlets such as BP and Shell on the main Garden Ring, which is Moscow’s main circular ring road. You can also find several located along the airport road, nearer to the airport itself.
  • Book your rental car at Moscow Domodedovo Airport at least 3 weeks before your trip in order to get a below-average price
