Casio ProTrek PRG-600 Review & Complete Guide

Casio ProTrek PRG-600 Review & Complete Guide

One of the most popular watch brands in the world for affordable and reliable timepieces is Casio. Casio sells millions and millions of watches per year, and they are widely appreciated for their affordable price yet long-lasting durability and accuracy.

Having said that, Casio has a wide array of timepieces in all shapes of forms to suit any style and preference.

If you are looking for a sporty, durable, and robust timepiece that can handle all kinds of hardship you subject it to, yet is packed with helpful functions, the Casio PRG 600 may be the watch for you.

Casio ProTrek PRG-600 Review

As the name suggests, the ProTrek PRG-600 is made as an outdoor watch. Most luxury watches need to be handled delicately, but this watch is more so the opposite of that. It is made for people who need a durable and reliable timepiece that can handle all kinds of rough conditions that outdoor life may involve.

Having said that, the Casio ProTrek PRG-600 is a tough watch. Both in the way, it is built but also in terms of look and design. Already at first glance, its personality reveals this is a tough one.

In this article, we are reviewing and looking closer at the Casio ProTrek PRG-600.

NOTE that Casio has made a number of versions and iterations of the ProTrek, all of which have the same reference (PRG-600), the only difference is the ending of the reference number. The differences between the different versions involve color differences and visual differences, but apart from that, they are all identical.

Having said that, we will look more widely at the Casio ProTrek PRG-600 in general, so you, in turn, can find the version which you prefer the most.

Casio ProTrek PRG-600 case

The watch is equipped with a stainless steel case with a resin bezel to make it more resistant and protected from knocks and shocks. It has a diameter of 51.6mm and a thickness that measures 13.4 mm. As we could expect, it’s quite a large watch. And that is exactly what outdoor tool watches should be. But at the same time, it doesn’t wear as insanely huge as the numbers on paper may suggest. Firstly, the watch weighs in at about 74 g which makes it very light.

Secondly, we haven’t yet spoken about the lug-to-lug measurement, which is perhaps the most important to talk about as it has a great impact on how a watch wears. As you can see, the lug design of the Casio ProTrek PRG-600 is quite unusual. They do not have the classic lug design which extends from the case, and therefore, the watch wears differently, too. Because of this, the lugs are quite short and therefore making the watch wear smaller than what the specifications suggest.

Sitting on top of the case is a Mineral Glass. At this price point, I don’t really expect a sapphire crystal. To keep the watch protected against water, it has a screw-down crown. The watch has a water resistance of 100M which is great for an outdoor watch. This means that it is suitable for both swimming and snorkeling and can handle all kinds of water splashes.

Speaking of durability, the watch is low-temperature Resistant and can handle temperatures down to –10°C/14°F.

Casio ProTrek PRG-600

Movement/functions/dial

The movement is packed with helpful functions you may need when outdoors. These functions include:

  • Tough Solar
  • Thermometer
  • Digital compass
  • Auto light switch
  • Smart Access

With that said, this is not only a watch but rather a complete toolset that can be truly handy and helpful in the outdoors. For example, if you are out hiking and want to know how high up you are, the altimeter can come in handy. If you need to navigate, the digital compass will come in handy. Want to know what temperature it is? No problem!

In addition to all of the helpful outdoor functions, the watch is also equipped with more basic, yet perhaps more important functions of a timepiece such as a world time, alarm, stopwatch, timer, alarm, and day/date.

At first glance, the watch may look complicated and overwhelming with all of the functions, buttons, and displays, but once you’ve gotten a hang of it, it’s relatively easy to use.

The buttons positioned on the sides of the case have the following functions:

  • Button at 2 o’clock is for the altimeter
  • Button at 6 o’clock is for the LED backlight
  • Button at 8 o’clock has multiple functions. Firstly to take you back to the main time. Secondly, to help you go through all of the different functions. The indicator is positioned at 9 o’clock.
  • Button at 10 o’clock lets you adjust the LCD display and its different modes.

Moving on to the dial of the watch, you can see that it combines both analog with digital. The watch displays the standard time in the form of hours, minutes, and seconds, via analog hands. In addition, as mentioned, it has an analog indicator at 9 o’clock for the different modes. At 6 o’clock, the watch has a digital screen that displays additional information.

The indicator at 9 o’clock is a really helpful function as it helps you instantly understand and know which function the screen displays and refers to.

Speaking of the dial, for the analog watch, the hour markers have been made very large to help with legibility. The hands are also made large and have a generous amount of luminous material applied to them to help with legibility in the dark. The indices are also luminous. But if that is not enough, the watch has LED lights that can be activated by pushing the button at 6 o’clock.

Therefore, with the Casio ProTrek PRG-600, legibility is hardly an issue, regardless if it’s night or day.

Depending on which model of the PRG-600 you opt for, they will have different dial/accent colors. The bezel color is also different on some of them, but upon closer inspection, you will also note that they all have a world timer, as, on the bezel, a large number of cities are indicated. The watch has a world timer for 48 cities.

As if that wasn’t enough, the watch is a solar-powered timepiece that is recharged via solar energy.

Casio ProTrek PRG-600 strap

Depending on the version of the PRG-600 you use, it comes with different straps. They are presented either on a silicone strap or a woven texture strap. Both of these straps come with their own set of pros and cons, but they are both durable.

Had this watch for about a year now. The thermometer is widely inaccurate and the crown dial doesn’t register clicks very well in the clockwise direction anymore. Also it can’t charge very well indoors, very much needs sunlight to charge well.

Sorry to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience!

Kind regards, Millenary Watches

I’ve had mine for year and a half now, and I can tell you that the thermometer won’t work with the watch strapped to your wrist for obvious reasons. IIRC it is stated in the instruction manual that the watch has to be off your wrist and in the shade, without moisture for a period of 20-30mins in order to get accurate temp readings. (E-69 section of the user’s manual) Also, it’s a SOLAR watch. Yes, it will need the sun to recharge. But, even after a whole year practically indoors, mine has NEVER left the High battery power level. Your crown dial seems to be a legit problem, but it should be solved under warranty.

Yes definitely! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience!

you recommend Amazon only, is there no other Casio retailer online? How much kickback do you get?

Hi, Amazon is the place that generally has most of these watches in stock most of the time. There are of course other places to buy but they often have a limited supply and are then out of stock. For the convenience of our readers, we refer to Amazon as that is the place where the chance is greatest that it is currently in stock.

Casio PRO TREK PRG-600 World-Timer with Tough Solar

December 15, 2016

Casio PRO TREK PRG-600 "Outdoor" World-Timer with Tough Solar Movement review (ref. PRG-600-1ER)

With its new PRO TREK PRG-600 “outdoor” world-timer, Casio delivers a stylish, surprisingly tastefully designed product. Primarily targeting people who lead an active lifestyle and do need a time-measuring device that would do a good job during a hiking expedition, it will also look great with a pair of blue jeans and a t-shirt in a safe co-working environment.

Inevitably having limitations of its own, the PRG-600-1ER gives you a great combination of good build quality, reasonable price, and an almost overwhelming list of functions that would make an owner of a Swiss-made analog/digital timekeeper drool. The only thing that spoils the fun is the “cased in Thailand” inscription on its machine-brushed back.

Overall Impression

Looking at this timekeeper, I get the impression that, at some point, someone at Casio realized that any modern wristwatch that costs more than fifty bucks is primarily a luxury item.

People want this item to look cool. They want metal; they want nice textures; they want carefully chosen combinations of typefaces. In two words, if the watch costs like a flagship Samsung smartphone, they want the ‘perceived quality’ of the product to at least match its recommended list price.

In this respect, the new member of their Protrek collection -the gorgeously masculine 2016 PRO TREK PRG-600 family- looks convincing.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by WatchISTANBULgram (@watchistanbulgram) on Feb 11, 2018 at 1:29am PST

The stainless steel bezel of model PRG-600-1ER has 29 time zones represented with engraved abbreviations of 29 respective cities. The brushed surface of the bezel plays well with a similarly finished setting crown at 3 o’clock.

The block-style hour markers perfectly match the color and overall “three-dimensional” feel of the three Arabic numerals and the olive-colored, aviator-style hour and minute hands. Even the bright orange central second hand that serves as the main accent is supported with smaller elements of the dial of the same color.

The rest of the case and the silicone band don’t make such a strong impression. But this is the whole idea behind the timekeeper’s design. This relatively affordable watch is aimed at people who plan to use it for hiking (or any other physical activity) and would like it to stay more or less presentable for a long time.

Also, they probably want the parts that are most prone to occasional dents and scratches to be crafted from something that is either not as easy to get a scratch or dent on or, at least, capable of concealing the damage from a reasonable distance.

All things considered, the PRG-600’s exterior is well-balanced and looks at least twice as expensive as the price that the Casio currently asks for it, and, even more important, has a good chance of looking almost mint for at least five years to come.

Case, Bezel & Strap

This iteration of the Pro-Trek has a well-designed, carefully thought-over black resin case that houses a metal cage with their signature Triple Sensor Ver. 3 movement.

While not particularly dressy, the rubberized plastic body adds an extra layer of shock protection for the electronic guts and is difficult to scratch (although repairing the exterior finish once you finally put a dent to it may be next to impossible) making it a true ‘outdoor activity’ wristwatch for real enthusiasts.

Casio PRO TREK PRG-600 "Outdoor" World-Timer Tough Solar Movement (PRG-600-1ER, etched case back cover)

The case is traditionally huge. Measuring more than 51 millimeters in length and width, it is also relatively slim at just over 13 millimeters top to bottom allowing for a more comfortable feel if you prefer to wear field jackets or shirts with relatively narrow cuffs.

The setting crown is protected from shocks by a pair of plastic crown guards. It is a bit too short for my taste but is also reassuringly large in diameter so operating it will never be a problem (yet you would still have to get your gloves off if there is a need to correct the timekeeper’s readings.) The four push-pieces, too, have a rather short travel, but their surface will provide a good grip even for sweaty fingers.

The choice of silicone band, too, looks good. In the summer heat, it will be a lot more comfortable on a wrist than a textile strap and, if anything goes wrong and you take a fall, the chance of extensive damage to your wrist will be greatly reduced compared to a lot sturdier stainless steel bracelet: the plastic strap will snap without putting you limb in danger.

Beware though: Casio traditionally uses non-standard straps for their watches so finding a replacement that would fit the case may be a problem.

The only thing that I don’t like here is the water resistance rating. While the guaranteed WR of 100 meters (10 BAR) is usually enough for most types of casual and sports watches, I think I would like this one to be more watertight.

After all, where I live hiking trips are sometimes combined with mild rafting and I think I wouldn’t like my brand new watch to be ruined by water after a rafting attempt goes (hopefully, slightly) wrong.

Dial & Legibility

From the legibility perspective, the dial leaves a somewhat dubious impression.

When it comes to the most basic functions of telling time, everything is almost perfect: the three Arabic numerals are huge, as are the nine block-shaped hour markers. The hands are wide enough and feature a shade of olive color that looks contrast over the dark grey background of the dial. The LED backlighting, too, is bright enough to make the whole display easily readable at night.

On the other hand, when you start going deeper and sifting through more advanced functions, things start getting more complicated: if this is your first electronic “multi-tool” you will be royally overwhelmed trying to use it right out of the box. Still, that’s something to be expected when you get yourself a wristwatch that has a whole page of its manual devoted just to listing all of its available functions.

Yes, like many other members of their Pro Trek family, this one will force you to read the freaking manual before you are ready to use it to its full potential.

Still, I must admit that I am surprised by how (relatively) clean the timepiece’s dial is. While Casio’s design team often finds itself unable to stop making the product more and more ‘beautiful’ by adding detail after painful detail and layer after unnecessary layer to the small dial opening, this member of the Pro Trek collection looks remarkably clean.

Some of the elements are still exaggerated and you may find the military-style numerals superfluous in the context of a lifestyle watch, but the lack of chrome-plated plastics and faux guilloche motifs stamped on the dial leaves a good impression making the watch look a lot more balanced and, well, to the point.

As for the LCD display, it is, too, highly legible: you will be able to read it even in twilight without the LED backlighting turned on. The deliberately blocky digits and letters are easy to understand, although the low resolution of the display gives the watch a somewhat archaic look.

Casio PRO TREK PRG-600 "Outdoor" World-Timer with Tough Solar Movement (ref. PRG-600-1ER, side view)

Casio has been developing its Triple Sensor technology for more than two decades and three iterations. Courtesy of a phenomenon currently known as Moore’s law, has managed to make the sensors installed in Ver. 3 (we have first seen it three years ago in their G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400 ) about twenty times smaller, ten times less energy-hungry and, what’s even more important, more accurate than the first batch that was brought to market back in 1993.

The downsizing process not only allowed the Japanese brand to make their newer watches more elegant and lean, but also gave them an opportunity to equip the timekeepers with more functions and, as far as I understand, with larger and denser batteries.

Combine these technological advances with the Tough Solar system (for this particular PRO TREK PRG-600 collection it gives you approximately 25 months of battery life in power-saving mode,) and you get yourself a gorgeous “outdoor” timekeeper that, for all intents and purposes, will not need recharging or battery replacement throughout all of its expected lifetime. I mean, you will get tired of it and donate the piece to a charity long before the solar charger will go bust.

The mechanisms that Casio uses for their battery-operated timekeepers are not particularly precise as they are. So the Japanese watchmaker actually had to equip the calibers with their signature “automatic hand adjustment system.”

While a watch snob may raise an eyebrow here and some more practical persons may regard the system as just one more component that may fail first in the long run, I find it ingenious and, if you excuse the expression, a part of the overall fun: after all, there are many not terribly precise quartz calibers that don’t have an auto-correction system at all.

The list of functions that this caliber offers is traditionally extremely long and, among other features, includes:

While many of these features are currently available even in the dumbest of mobile phones that are sold for 20 bucks a piece, the first three functions in the list above are unique to this sort of ‘activity’ watches and are helpful if hiking is indeed your idea of an active lifestyle.

Of course, it would be nice to have Bluetooth connectivity here for more convenient activity tracking and, maybe, automatic time zone adjustment , but, let’s face it, the technology is still fairly rare and is usually reserved to a lot (at least twice) more expensive timekeepers.

Pricing & Availability

The PRO TREK PRG-600 is already available on most international markets. Prices, as usual, deviate a great deal depending on which part of the world you happen to live in. In the United States, it is usually offered at around $320. In Europe, the volatility is a bit higher with a quick sweep through idealo.de giving a range of between €287 and €349.

The relatively low price may have something to do with the “Cased in Thailand” inscription on its solid back, but I don’t see even a hint of the problem here: given the high quality of the movement, its wide functionality, and, of course, the Japanese brand’s traditionally thorough choice of exterior parts, I think the price to be more than adequate. It may not be a ‘steal’, but it’s not overpriced either if you plan to use it as it is supposed to be used.

  • [ProTrek Review] PRG-600YB-3ER with a wider nylon strap

pro trek prg 600 1cr

The Ultimate Guide to All PROTREKs — composed by Experts

Casio ProTrek’s PRG-600 series of travel destinations continues to be a personal favorite among the many outdoor creations of the Japanese brand. Of course, I do not yet take into account the very fresh G-Shock Rangeman GPR-B1000 , which will give odds to any tracks in principle. Forget about them and consider the so-called tourism classics, PRG-600YB-3ER watches.

pro trek prg 600 1cr

Damn, did I really forget … No, g-shock fans and KO, I wanted to feel the PRG-600YB-3ER with a fabric strap. I don’t know why, but fabric straps have long been my weakness. The thread, as for me, fits perfectly with the ProTrek philosophy.

pro trek prg 600 1cr

What can I say, the PRG-600YB-3ER look chic. The strap is made in a modest minimalist style. The fabric is very dense, it bends hard [agree, a solid indicator].

pro trek prg 600 1cr

This is definitely not a rag with which you can wipe the table. The place near the mount with the body is repeatedly stitched with a thin thread.

pro trek prg 600 1cr

Strength is beyond doubt. Stitched for centuries. Another important point – the strap is quite wide. If silicone is trying to be narrow, then tissue is the opposite – it widely covers your wrist.

pro trek prg 600 1cr

The metal clasp deserves special attention. It is matte, also in a minimal style, and for some reason I really like its look. The watch has two leather strap holders.

pro trek prg 600 1cr

The decision is logical – the fabric version would be very thick and bulged.

pro trek prg 600 1cr

Further, the PRG-600YB-3ER case itself … Again, I will not dwell on all the features [functions and technologies] for a long time, because you can read the first review, where I have thoroughly gone into all the details.

Now, I want to show you the PRG-600YB from different angles to recall the existence of such a beautiful model.

pro trek prg 600 1cr

The color tone of the watch contributes to the perfect readability of information. The hour markers, buttons, and hands contrast so strongly with the black background. It is impossible not to notice the exact time.

A thin light strip on the crown [SMART ACCESS] is another design element for a harmonious combination with display elements.

The backlight button is so easy to find. Ideally disappeared almost at the place of attachment of the strap [under the 6-hour mark].

Compass, barometer, thermometer and other advanced electronic functions work only in digital mode. Although not, in compass mode, the second hand acts as a direction indicator.

This is how the backlight works. In the last review, I was able to better convey the excellent readability of information in the dark:

PRG-600YB-3ER can be called “SUVs” in the world of ProTrek-s. It seems like there are a lot of functions, use at least in the desert, but such a case focuses on ordinary active citizens. Arrows are not always convenient from an extreme point of view, but ideal for a life mix.

Moscow-City: 7 surprising facts about the Russian capital’s business center

pro trek prg 600 1cr

1. Guinness World Record in highlining

pro trek prg 600 1cr

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

pro trek prg 600 1cr

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers

7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the  ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

Left to right: the lower of the ‘Neva Towers’ (296 m), Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt (300 m), Gorod Stolits (“City of Capitals”) Moscow tower (302 m), Eurasia tower (309 m), The Shard’ skyscraper in London (310 m), Mercury City Tower (339 m), Neva Towers (345 m).

However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).

3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

pro trek prg 600 1cr

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.

4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

pro trek prg 600 1cr

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.

5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

pro trek prg 600 1cr

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.

6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

pro trek prg 600 1cr

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.

7. The highest restaurant in Europe

‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.

Pro-Moscow separatists once marched in this Ukraine border city. Now it’s standing against Russia.

RUSSIA-UKRAINE BORDER — The helicopter cut through the gray sky, following the path of the razor-wire fence below it. Lt. Col. Uiry Trubachov, of Ukraine’s Border Guard Service, squinted up at the chopper.

“Those are Russians,” he said.

Before Russia’s invasion and annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014, the border barriers didn’t exist. Now, they separate Ukraine’s easternmost cities and towns from the buildup of Russian troops on the other side — and what U.S. officials and allies have warned could be the vanguard of an attack on Ukraine.

At Ukraine’s northeastern border crossing near Kharkiv — the country’s predominantly Russian-speaking, second-most populous city, with about 1.5 million people — the fences are controversial. Some who live right at the edge of the boundary resent the obstruction to Russian territory they used to visit often — to pick mushrooms in the nearby forest or see friends in Belgorod, a Russian city about an hour away from the main land crossing.

[ What you need to know about Russia's military buildup on Ukraine's border ]

The language and identity fault lines that weave through Ukraine are especially pronounced here — a region where pro-Russian separatists once raised their flag. Across many parts of Ukraine, Russia tugs with a sense of common bonds and shared history. But Ukrainians have nonetheless chosen a pro-Western path that carries the powerful momentum of the future.

It’s also what makes Kharkiv a rich study in Ukrainians’ views toward Russia as its president, Vladimir Putin, deepens a showdown with NATO over what Moscow perceives as its sphere of influence, which includes Ukraine.

‘Defending Kharkiv’

The Kremlin attempts to exploit the East-West pull in Ukraine with propaganda that accuses the Ukrainian government of oppressing Russian speakers. But many in Kharkiv fiercely objected to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s comments to The Washington Post that the city could be a prime target for Russia.

“Realistically, if Russia decides to enhance their escalation, of course they are going to do this on those territories where historically there are people who used to have family links to Russia,” Zelensky said. “Kharkiv, which is under Ukraine government control, could be occupied.”

Kharkiv may not harbor as much resentment of Russia as other parts of Ukraine. But the pro-Russian sentiments from 2014 that threatened to turn the city into another Moscow-backed separatist territory — similar to the Donetsk and Luhansk enclaves in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region — no longer have major sway.

[ Six ways Russia views Ukraine — and why each should worry the West ]

“People here love Ukraine because Ukrainians live here,” said Kharkiv’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov. “Yes, we speak Russian. If you ask me if Kharkiv citizens want Ukraine to be friends with Russia, the answer is definitely yes. But do they want war? Definitely not. Do they want for us to be a piece of Russia? Of course not.”

“We will not be giving away the city of Kharkiv to anyone,” Terekhov added. “We will be standing shoulder to shoulder defending Kharkiv.”

As pro-Russian separatists marched through Kharkiv with Russian flags in early April 2014, Gamlet Zinkivskyi had a front-row seat. His apartment balcony at the time looked onto one of downtown Kharkiv’s main streets. He watched with dismay as demonstrators occupied the regional administration building and declared the sovereignty of a so-called “Kharkiv People’s Republic.”

“That was a moment when I started packing my things and thinking where to go,” said Zinkivskyi, a prominent artist and Kharkiv native. “I knew I couldn’t stay here. If Kharkhiv becomes Russian, that’s it, I’m leaving.”

Unlike the separatist movements in the Donbas region — touching off an ongoing conflict that has claimed nearly 14,000 lives since 2014 — the one in Kharkhiv ultimately fizzled. Kyiv’s forces maintained control of the city. It instead welcomed scores of refugees fleeing the fighting in the new self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk republics.

[ What NATO members have sent Ukraine so far ]

The plight of those people — and seeing what ultimately became of the separatist regions — helped shift attitudes in Kharkiv, Zinkivskyi said. Life in those territories is locked in a political limbo with few job opportunities. Many people end up moving to Moscow at their first opportunity. In the city of Donetsk, which has a population of about 900,000 people, a nighttime curfew is in place four days a week.

“Some people used to believe that Donetsk will turn into Donetsk City, with skyscrapers, and New Yorkers dreaming of moving to the Donbas,” Zinkivskyi said. “That didn’t happen, to put it mildly.”

“And those people realized that, hey, they didn’t want the same thing happening in Kharkiv,” he added.

About a 30-minute drive from downtown Kharkiv is what looks like a row of storage containers. It is actually a camp for people who fled the separatist territories. Each block has small apartments — smaller than most college dorm rooms — with shared kitchens and bathrooms.

Liudmilya Makarova has been living here with her daughter, who has Down syndrome, and her son since 2015, about a year after they fled the self-proclaimed Luhansk separatist republic. The kids sleep on bunk beds. Makarova is on a couch that doesn’t have room to unfold into a bed. Colorful drawings line the wall, giving the space a cozy feel despite the cramped quarters. But it was never supposed to feel like home.

“I had no idea it would last so long, with no end of it in sight,” Makarova said.

Her last memories of her home in Luhansk were hiding in the cellar with her children as intense fighting broke out between the rebels and government forces, including airstrikes. She was too afraid to leave the space to cook for them.

“I couldn’t keep watching my children cry,” she said. “I’m recalling that and I’m starting to shake.”

Talk of a fresh attack from Russia is a trigger for some of the camp’s residents, who already fled war once. Makarova said she keeps away from the news. One of her neighbors, Marina Kirbaba, follows it more closely.

“We’ve been through this before,” Kirbaba said. “I don’t think that — well, then again, who knows what Putin has in his head. I don’t know why he would attack? Why?”

Scanning the border

What used to be an empty field surrounded by thick forest is now split by trenches Ukraine has never had to use. The military built them, with wooden-planked walls, at the eastern edge of the Kharkiv region in 2015 as the separatist conflict in Donbas flared.

Just beside the trenches is an observation tower with cameras that monitor activity near this border around-the-clock.

If the Russians choose to invade Kharkiv, this won’t stop them, said Trubachov, of Ukraine’s Border Guard Service. But it might slow them down enough for Ukraine to call in reinforcements.

“The situation is stable and under control,” Trubachov said. “Directly near the line of state control, we do not observe the movement or gathering of Russian troops — I mean, the territory that we can control by observing.”

[ Four maps that explain the Ukraine-Russia conflict ]

When the fencing was installed seven years ago, it quite literally walled off a small border village of about 100 retirees. Now a line of trenches runs behind their farm plots, followed by the fence. Getting in or out of the village means passing through a border guard security checkpoint.

Ukrainians are able to enter Russia at the nearby land border crossing. But people from the village complain that it’s a long walk for them to get to the checkpoint and that the crossing process is challenging. It used to be just a 10-minute walk behind their yards.

One woman started crying because she said she’s been unable to visit her son’s grave, which is in Russia. He died during the Soviet Union’s war in Afghanistan during the 1980s. Another lamented that she could buy groceries cheaper across the border in Russia.

“We are not feeling any aggression toward Russians. We are Russians, too,” said 77-year-old Mikhail Fokiev. “Moreover, we have plenty of relatives there.”

But asked what he would do if the Russian military crossed into this region, Fokiev said he would go west, further into Ukraine.

“What else is there to do?” he asked.

It is the first in the post-Soviet era Russian science city built “from scratch”. The campus of Moscow School of Management “Skolkovo” is located nearby.

News, notes and thoughts:

2 November, 2010   / Microsoft announced establishment of a software development center near Moscow. In Skolkovo innovation hub it will open a technology center to give companies an opportunity to test their solutions on corporate-scale IT infrastructure. Skolkovo project seems becoming more real now.

Skolkovo - Features

The project envisages that about 50 thousand people will live and work on an area of 2.5 million square meters by 2020. As for 2015, “Hypercube” building, an office center “Technopark” (4 buildings), International Aviation Academy (Boeing), “Polyot” recreation area were built and put into operation.

Originally the complex was located in the territory of the urban settlement of Novoivanovsky, near the village of Skolkovo, in the eastern part of the Odintsovo district of the Moscow region, to the west of the Moscow Ring Road, on Skolkovo highway. July 1, 2012, the territory of the innovation center “Skolkovo” became a part of Moscow (Mozhaisk District of the Western Administrative District), after a large-scale expansion of Moscow’s territory.

This place should become a major testing ground for new Russian economic policies with the branch offices and laboratories of leading universities and companies from Russia and other countries.

On the territory of 370 hectares academic research and postgraduate training will be carried out. Skolkovo will have innovative companies, hi-tech manufacturing facilities, housing area, theater, etc.

The funding comes from the federal budget of Russia (infrastructure development including scientific infrastructure). The remaining objects, commercial infrastructure and some social facilities, will be funded within the system of co-financing of the Russian state and business.

Compared to the PRW-3000, the background in the PRG-600 is lighter, which creates a better contrast with the digital indexes [the displayed data is large, almost the entire width of the electronic window].
