Best Tools to Find Attractions Along Your Road Trip Route

When planning a road trip, one of the biggest tasks we face is figuring out how to find attractions along a route.

Not only do you have to worry about finding a place to stay and eat, but you also want to make sure that there are plenty of fun things to do along the way. 

The beauty of a road trip is finding those hidden gems along your route and this post is here to help you do just that. 

We’ll give you the tools you need to find attractions both ahead of time and while on your road trip. 

Let’s dive in!

Roadtrippers

I’m going to start with what we feel is the best tool for finding attractions and things to do along your road trip route, Roadtrippers.

Roadtrippers is likely the most popular website/app for helping you plan and execute your road trip. And for good reason.

It has a large database of attractions, activities, campgrounds, restaurants, etc. And all in an easy-to-use website and phone app. You can filter results so you can find the exact type of activity you are looking for along your route. 

It’s an extremely powerful tool that all road trippers should check out.

There is a free version where you’ll have limited waypoints to add to your trip if you are using it to plan your route. The paid version gives you more options and removes ads. But if you are simply looking for things to do along your road trip route, the free version is more than adequate.

Google Maps

Google Maps holds a wealth of knowledge and is useful for both planning your road trip and providing you with turn-by-turn directions during your road trip. But in our opinion, it isn’t the best for finding attractions along your route. It simply seems to miss a lot unless you zoom in on your route.

But it is still a decent option if you don’t want to learn a new app or website.

Google Maps is best used for planning your trip on your computer and not when you are already on the road. And if you really want to use the power of Google, it’s a great way to create a custom road trip map to help you plan your trip.

You can search on the Google Maps app on your phone as well. It’s just not as user-friendly and doesn’t give the best results.

Follow these steps to use Google Maps to find attractions along your route:

• Enter a destination and starting point. Click Directions.
• Click the magnifying glass on the top
• On the left, click “things to do.”

Protip: Google Maps tends to find more attractions when you zoom in on an area and click “search this area”.

iExit Interstate Exit Guide

iExit is a helpful app that you can use to find attractions along the interstates you are traveling. 

It tells you what types of stores, restaurants, and services are at each exit. But it also allows you to filter results, so you only see the ones that interest you. For example, if you are craving fast food, you can filter the results only to show fast-food options at your upcoming exits. 

It’s helpful when planning your route ahead of time and also on the road when you want to quickly lookup where the nearest restaurant or gas station is. iExit also helps you locate the cheapest gas prices around you.

Facebook Groups

Another helpful tool for finding attractions along your road trip route is Facebook groups. There are a variety of different groups that you can join to find attractions and activities in the areas you’ll be driving through.

So whether you’re looking for hiking trails, historic sites, or amusement parks, there’s most likely a Facebook group out there that can help.

The great thing about Facebook groups is that they are often run by locals who know the area well and can recommend something that other online reviews might not always pick up on. So be sure to check out some Facebook groups next time you’re planning a road trip.

Our favorite group for USA road trips is USA Road Trips Share Your Adventures . But before we head out on a road trip, we always join a bunch of groups specific to the area we are traveling. It’s amazing the tips you’ll get in these knowledgeable groups.

Billboards along Your Route

One of the simplest ways to find interesting places along your road trip route is simply by looking for billboards. You’ll see a lot of them as you’re driving and they can be helpful in finding things to do along your route.

We would have never stopped at the world’s largest candle if we didn’t see 10 billboards enticing us to stop. Attractions like these are a fun place to stop for a quick bathroom break and a stretch of the legs. And they are typically right off the interstate so they don’t add a ton of time onto your trip.

Just be sure to take note of the exit number so you can easily find it when you’re ready to exit.

California Road Trip: Top 15 Scenic Stops Along the Way

California is truly filled with unique treasures. Although many people associate California with Hollywood, there are so many places to explore in the Golden State ! 

Road-tripping through California could take weeks, and you still won’t see it all. That’s why we’ve put together a California road trip itinerary for you to journey your way down the coast from Northern California through the Central Coast and into Southern California. 

For this California road trip, you’ll mainly be following Highway 1 south. This famous highway gives you incredible views of the Pacific Ocean. Even beyond these stops, you’ll see amazing sights throughout your entire journey, even just from your car. 

Once you hit Santa Barbara, it’s time to head back north, but you’ll be following a more inland path. This way, you’ll be able to make time for national parks, hidden hideaways, and fresh food from California’s farmland!

This road trip takes you through some of the more hidden gems of the state, like Half Moon Bay, San Simeon, and Solvang. From wine tours to hiking trails to amusement parks, there’s so much to do at these stunning locations that you may want to spend a few days at each stop. 

But to help you get the most out of each day, we’ve picked out a few of the sights you just can’t miss seeing. Follow this carefully curated California road trip itinerary to uncover all the famous and little-known destinations California has to offer.

Scenic Stops Along Your California Road Trip

Before you venture south, start your journey in San Francisco. Known for its steep rolling hills, eclectic architecture, and fantastic food scene, you could spend your whole vacation getting to know this diverse city. But if you’re only stopping by and visiting for a few days, there should be a few highlights on your list of things to do in San Francisco . 

Take a walk along the Lands End Coastal Trail for one of the best views of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Then, explore Golden Gate Park, where you’ll find beautiful places to spend an afternoon, like the Japanese Tea Garden or the Conservatory of Flowers . 

Another stop to make is the Palace of Fine Arts , one of the most picturesque structures in the city. If you’d like to see the famous Painted Ladies, head to Alamo Square Park for a view like no other. Finish your eventful day off by dining in Ghirardelli Square .

2. Have a Beach Day in Half Moon Bay

As a northern California coastal town filled with excellent surfing, clean beaches, and bright blue waters, you may end up spending your entire time in Half Moon Bay relaxing in the sand. But there’s plenty more to do in this charming town, especially if you visit in the fall. 

Located an easy 30 miles south of San Francisco, Half Moon Bay is known for its pumpkin patches. The farms in Half Moon Bay put on quite a show in autumn, with corn mazes, haunted hayrides, and plenty of pumpkin picking. If you’re visiting closer to winter, many of these pumpkin patches turn into Christmas tree farms, complete with hot cocoa and tons of fun for adults and little ones alike.

Once you’re done at the farms, head to Half Moon Bay’s historic downtown for some great dining options and stores boasting one-of-a-kind finds. Here you’ll find handcrafted trinkets, hand-cut flowers, and even baby chicks to coo over.

3. Catch Epic Waves in Santa Cruz

Venturing an hour south of Half Moon Bay on Highway 1, your next stop should be the laidback and beachy town of Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is best known for its iconic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk , where you can ride the historic Giant Dipper, play skeeball in a huge and classic arcade, and spend a whole day sampling delicious boardwalk eats. 

But if you’d rather spend time in the forest instead of at the beach, climb aboard a train at the Roaring Camp Railroads . Hop on the Redwood Forest Steam Train for a tour of the redwoods until you reach Bear Mountain. 

Or take the Santa Cruz Beach Train, where you’ll be taken through Henry Cowell State Park and delivered to the Santa Cruz beaches. Around the holiday season, these trains are transformed into an illuminated wonderland.

Santa Cruz also has a diverse downtown, where you’ll find delicious dining options and unique shopping opportunities, as well as live music, historic movie theaters, and more. There are so many fun things to do in this beachside beauty – you could easily spend three days in Santa Cruz .

4. Spot Majestic Sea Creatures in Monterey

Less than an hour south of Santa Cruz is Monterey, another waterfront town with a very different vibe and a must on any California road trip. You won’t find amusement park rides in Monterey, but what you will find is incredible wildlife, amazing eats, and aquatic attractions like no other. There are tons of fun things to do in Monterey !

If you only have a few days in Monterey, you’ll likely want to spend them exploring the bay itself. Climb aboard a kayak at the Monterey Bay, and you’re bound to see sea lions, seals, otters, and maybe even dolphins while you’re paddling. Or venture to Old Fisherman’s Wharf to take a whale-watching tour and see humpbacks, orcas, and many more unique types of whales that spend time in the Monterey waters. 

One of the biggest attractions in Monterey is the Monterey Bay Aquarium , a world-renowned aquarium known for its rehabilitation efforts for abandoned wildlife. Learn about how surrogate otter moms train lost pups to prepare them to be released back into the wild. 

While you’re here, you’ll spot stunning creatures from diverse habitats, from the many organisms that call kelp forests home to the bewildering beauties of the little-seen deep sea. Once you’re done exploring the aquarium, head out to Cannery Row for fine dining options with an ocean view.

5. Take in Unreal Pacific Views in Big Sur

Not too far from Monterey is Big Sur, a historic location on the water. Take a photo at the Bixby Bridge, one of the most beautiful bridges in the world. Then, go for a hike at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Keep your eyes peeled for the hidden Keyhole Arch!

As you explore this gorgeous park, you’ll come across the 80-foot McWay Falls, a rushing waterfall surrounded by sandy beaches and granite cliffs. Another great hike is the Partington Cove Trail, a one-mile hike that leads you to a cove with tide pools, wildflowers, and one heck of a view.

For another unique beach experience, head to Pfeiffer Beach. Here you’ll walk along shimmering purple sand, which gets its color from manganese garnet. Check the north side of the beach near the tidepools for this naturally occurring phenomenon.

6. Check Out the Elephant Seals in San Simeon

When you stop at San Simeon, you’ll find many beautiful beaches to visit, as well as breathtaking views. But there are two locations that you have to check out if you have a short stay in this spectacular town on the water. 

The first is the real jewel of San Simeon, Hearst Castle . Started in 1919, this castle consisted of a twin-towered main building, three guesthouses, and 127 acres of terraced gardens, fountains, and pools. It’s also a museum that’s home to art and antiquities from around the world. 

There are several different types of tours available, including one that invites guests to dress in period costumes and be transported back to the age of William Randolph Hearst himself. Pick the tour that you’d like to go on most, but be sure to book in advance as space is limited.

The other stop you should make is at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery , an easily accessible rookery where you’ll spot (and hear!) thousands of elephant seals nestled in the sand. Although you’ll find elephant seals here all throughout the year, up to 17,000 seals can be found here during peak times, which occur in January, April, and October.

7. Go Kayaking in Morro Bay

Located just 30 miles south of San Simeon, Morro Bay is a fishing village that’s a perfect stop for people who love getting out on the water. Charter your own fishing boat or rent a paddle board to venture around the bay. 

You’re bound to spot playful otters, resting seals, and barking sea lions no matter where you go in Morro Bay. After that, ride off into the sunset on a floating tiki bar complete with 1950s-style cocktails, or paddle as the moon rises over the famous Morro Rock with a sunset kayaking tour .

Morro Bay is often foggy, but the fog typically burns off by midday. Otherwise, the climate is very temperate, so there’s never a bad time to visit this beachside town. But two of the best times to come here are during fall’s Avocado Margarita Festival and spring’s Morro Bay Kite Festival . 

During the Avocado Margarita Festival, you’ll listen to live music in a picturesque setting while you sip on eclectic cocktails and dine on gourmet avocado treats. This festival truly is very Californian! 

During the Kite Festival, you and your family will watch as pieces of art fly overhead, flown by trained kite pilots. For even more fun for the little ones, some of these kites are packed with candy, which will drop at certain times of the day.

8. Rent a Dune Buggy in Pismo Beach

Once the Clam Capital of the World, Pismo Beach is a beachy town filled with places for outdoor adventures. You’ll find this gem 26 miles south of Morro Bay, so it’s a great place to get out and stretch your legs during your California road trip.

From October to February, you can watch thousands of butterflies soar overhead at the Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove . You can also head to Dinosaur Caves Park , a bluff park that spans 11 acres. Kids will love playing at the dinosaur-themed playground, while you’ll love sightseeing in the lush green open space. 

For a more tranquil spot, venture over to Eldwayen Ocean Park . During low tide, you’ll spot tons of aquatic creatures here, from anemones to sea stars. But if you’re more of a daredevil, you’ll want to go to Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, the only place in California where motor vehicles can drive on the beach. Rent a dune buggy and go for the ride of your life!

9. Wine and Dine in Santa Barbara

Set 82 miles south of Pismo, Santa Barbara is one of the most popular weekend destinations in Southern California for a good reason. This gorgeous coastal town boasts beautiful beaches, gorgeous gardens, and many more amazing activities. 

Explore Lotusland , a lush and whimsical garden sitting on 37 acres and filled with a stunning collection of exotic plants once collected by famous Polish opera singer and socialite Madame Ganna Walska. Or head to Arroyo Burro County Beach Park for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing.

Santa Barbara is known for its food and wine scene, so if you only have a day or two, join a wine or food tour to get the full experience of this scenic location. Take a sustainable wine tour , where you’ll go behind the scenes to see how small-production wines are made and sample them in private tasting rooms. Or go on a tasting tour to find local eats that are hidden gems to the area. 

End your day here with a show at the Lobero Theatre , the oldest continuously-performing theater in California. Or take in the sunset at Stearns Wharf, the oldest wooden wharf continuously in use in California. 

Now that you’ve made it to Santa Barbara, it’s time to venture back up the state. Although we journeyed down the coast, you’ll be heading back up more inland to mix things up!

10. Be Transported to Denmark in Solvang

A must on any California road trip bucket list, the charming village of Solvang will make you feel like you’ve been transported across the world. This town is known for its Danish history, architecture, and treats. 

Ride along the historic horse-drawn Solvang Trolley and take in the sights of this uniquely wonderful location. As you wander along the main street, Mission Drive, you’ll gawk at colorful facades, spectacular windmills, and beautiful blooming flowers. 

Solvang features many wine-tasting rooms, fine dining establishments, and shops with one-of-a-kind treats. Ingeborg’s Danish Chocolate Inc. is a must-do for any sweets lover. Here you’ll find handcrafted chocolates of all kinds. If you’re a fan of the holidays, head to Jule Hus , where it’s Christmas all year long. 

If you’re a history buff, you’ll find many one-of-a-kind museums in Solvang. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum will take you into the life and works of this beloved Danish writer. 

To learn more about the Danish history of the area, the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art will take you through art and artifacts of Solvang’s Danish roots, all housed in a building reminiscent of 18th century Denmark farmhouse. And the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum shows off exotic and vintage motorcycles and European racing bikes, a perfect stop for a racing lover.

11. Spend the Night at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo

Continuing north for about an hour, you’ll head to San Luis Obispo, where you’ll find wine tasting, farm-to-table dining, and an entertaining downtown to explore. 

Take a tour of the historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa , take a walk through the strange and wonderful Bubblegum Alley, or give your kids a day of play at the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum . For a truly unique site, visit the Cal Poly Architecture Graveyard, a nine-acre area packed with eclectic structures built by students at Cal Poly.

If you have a night to spend in San Luis Obispo, rent a room at the Madonna Inn , a world-famous, whimsical inn with uniquely designed rooms. From rooms that look like they were built into the wall of a canyon to bright pink love shack-inspired suites, this kitschy gem is truly a one-of-a-kind find.

12. Go Wine Tasting in Paso Robles

Drive 30 miles north, and you’ll come across Paso Robles, a haven for art, culture, and wine. Visit Senserio , a 15-acre light show across rolling hills, for a spectacle unlike any other. Hike around Carrizo Plain National Monument, where the best time to explore is from March to May when the California poppies are in bloom. 

After that, you can take a hot air balloon ride over Paso Robles’ many vineyards or rest and rejuvenate in the area’s natural hot springs. You can dine on a castle rooftop at Tooth and Nail Winery , but there are plenty more wine-tasting options in the area. Hop aboard Paso Robles’ many wine tours to get a chance to experience several of the area’s biggest and best wineries.

13. Take a Hike in Pinnacles National Park

Pinnacles is a national park located just east of the Salinas Valley. About 23 million years ago, multiple volcanoes erupted, and the lava flow slid to form what would later become Pinnacles National Park. 

Throughout this gorgeous landscape, visitors can journey through chaparral, oak woodlands, and canyon bottoms. This park is home to many rare creatures, like the California condor. Hikers can also venture through talus caves and come out to find towering rock spires.

Because temperatures can reach the 90s and swing wildly throughout the day, it’s not recommended to hike in the Pinnacles during the peak of the summer. Although traveling here in the fall and winter can be beautiful, the best time to visit is in spring, when the wildflowers are in bloom. There are over 30 miles of hiking trails, so there’s plenty to explore here!

14. Try All the Garlicky Treats in Gilroy

Famously the Garlic Capital of the World, Gilroy is an adorable hidden gem in Santa Clara County, roughly an hour from Pinnacles National Park. Stop at one of the many garlic stops along the road here and even try some garlic ice cream if you’re feeling adventurous. 

Follow the Road to Garlic to find restaurants and shops offering the best garlic treats Gilroy has to offer. And if you have little ones, you’ll love Gilroy Gardens , which features beautiful gardens, amusement park rides, and the living sculptures that are the Circus Trees. 

Just outside of Gilroy is Henry W. Coe State Park, the largest state park in northern California and home to 87,000 acres of hills and mountain ridges in the Diablo Mountain Range. Wildflowers bloom all over this park from February to March, so it’s a masterpiece of color by April. With so many trails lining the flower-covered hills, this park is a hiker’s paradise.

15. Take It Easy in the East Bay

Now that you’ve made it back up to northern California finish off your road trip in the East Bay. Lying across the Bay Bridge to San Francisco, the East Bay consists of Contra Costa County and Alameda County. 

Hike your way around Tilden Regional Park, go stargazing at Chabot Space & Science Center , or dine on the water at Jack London Square in Oakland. If you’d like to see the iconic redwoods, be sure to stroll along the trails at Redwood Regional Park.

If you have young children, they’ll love Children’s Fairyland , an amusement park that looks like it came right out of a storybook. It’s conveniently located nearby the scenic Lake Merritt. This lake is also home to a large and eclectic farmers market every Saturday that’s certainly worth a stop.

Val started documenting the Wandering Wheatleys travels back in 2013 as a way to update friends and family about her whereabouts and to relay humorous daily interactions. The only readers were her mom and her mother-in-law but that didn’t stop her! Thanks to smartphones, road trippers today have an infinite number of resources to help plan the perfect road trip (or at least provide some guidance for those who prefer not to plan ahead). Several apps are designed specifically to assist travelers who go by car—many of them free—so you can focus on enjoying the journey without getting bogged down by the details.

Roadtrippers

One of the most essential apps for any road trip, Roadtrippers is the ultimate travel planning resource for anyone embarking on a driving vacation. It's especially useful for travelers who have a clear starting point and ending point, but aren't quite sure what routes to take, what cities to stop in, and what to see along the way. You just punch in point A and point B, and Roadtrippers will give you all of the best options for getting from one to the other along with recommendations of hotels, restaurants, bars, and can't-miss points of interest. It's completely free to download and use, although a premium version is available with even more features.

HotelTonight

Road trips mean you don't always know exactly where you'll be sleeping every night of the trip. You may have a general itinerary of where you're going and when, but spontaneous plans, last-minute changes, or car trouble can throw a wrench at that. When you suddenly need a place to crash, open up HotelTonight . This free app works best for same-day reservations by finding nearby deals for rooms that would otherwise be empty. The options range from luxury resorts to boutique bed and breakfasts, so after a long day behind the wheel, you can make a pitstop exactly where you want to.

If you want to score the best deals on your trip, Groupon is the place to see what's available at a discounted price. Groupon collects deals for all types of services and products that would be useful to road trippers, such as hotel rooms, car rentals, restaurants, excursions, oil changes, and much more. The app is totally free to use and you can organize your results based on category or the city you're traveling to. It's great not just for finding new activities you may not have known existed, but also for finding deals on something that was already a part of your plan.

Tripit is a free and easy-to-use travel planning and itinerary organizing app typically used more by frequent fliers. But road trippers can use the Tripit app or website to plan a trip complete with hotel, dining, and shopping stops. Whenever you book a hotel, dinner reservation, car rental, or some type of transit, just forward the confirmation email to Tripit and it will automatically be stored inside the app, so your entire itinerary is easily accessible in one location. Tripit even lets you share your travel agenda to social media or with other friends on Tripit. Plus, it's an easy way to go back later and remember all of the travel details of your trip.

Google Maps

A navigation app isn't a revolutionary idea for a road trip and there's a good chance you already have one downloaded on your phone. And even though Google Maps is by far the most popular one, it's worth calling out as a necessity for your journey. You can filter directions by the fastest route, traffic conditions, avoiding tolls, or intermediary stops. You can also download entire areas to be used offline, which is essential for stretches of road that are outside of coverage zones. If you want to plan out when you'll stop for food, gas, coffee, or a supermarket, Google Maps will find places along the route, each one accompanied by all of the reviews of other Google users.

A road trip across the U.S. sometimes involves countless hours of driving at night in the middle of nowhere. Or, it could mean a camping trip under the stars. Either way, you're going to need to make a night-time pit stop, so why not use the break to take in those twinkling stars? The free Star Walk app is an easy-to-use astronomy program that lets you point your phone at the sky and discover which stars, planets, and constellations are above you. Which of those dots is actually the North Star? Can I see my birth sign constellation? Is that glowing red orb Mars? With Star Walk, all of these answers and more are at your fingertips.

If you've ever been on a road trip, you already know the story: You've been driving for hours, you're in an unfamiliar area miles away from a big city, and you suddenly realize the gas indicator is dangerously close to "E." Do you veer off to the first rest stop you see? Or wait it out and hope for something less expensive a few miles ahead? Thanks to Gas Buddy , you can make a decision without any internal dilemma. This free app searches all nearby gas stations for the best prices, so you can easily choose and not risk paying more than necessary—or worse, running out of gas in the middle of nowhere.

Some of the best road trip memories likely involve turning the music up and rocking out to your favorite music with the open road in front of you. Rather than getting stuck with what's playing on the radio, download the Spotify app to find your favorite artists or music genre and create playlists with the tap of your finger. The Best Stops near I-65: Road Trips Planning Guide

Ever need a break from work and just feel like driving? It happens to us all the time! Thankfully we have family in Alabama which gives us a quick reason to go South, but we also love heading North to visit one of our favorite cities: Chicago! All that driving has given us time to explore the best road trip stops off of I-65 and to help you with your road trips planning!

Starting from the Chicago, Illinois {North End} and traveling all 887 miles of I-65 to Mobile, Alabama {South End}- these are the best road trip stops off of I-65. To use this guide we’ll call Chicago mile 0, go all the way through 4 states and tell you how far until you get to each next Instagram-worthy stop. All of our recommended stops are within 20 minutes from the Interstate!

Chicago (Mile 0)

Starting at the northern end of Interstate 65- Chicago is actually about 45 minutes from the start of the interstate. If you’re starting your dream cross-country road trip in America – you won’t find a better start than in a big city like Chicago! The complete shift in the landscape from a big city to rolling country fields and small towns always makes your trip more interesting!

When planning your Chicago pit stop.. keep it simple by grabbing a deep-dish pizza and maybe visiting the Cloud Gate! If you’re coming from further away and you’re ready for a stop, stay overnight at Thompson Chicago , the Radisson Blue Aqua Hotel , and enjoy the nightlife in the area. Downtown Chicago is famous for its shopping and foodie scene as well as sweeping skyline views. (It’s even one of the best city sunsets in the USA!)

Some of the most Instagrammable places in Chicago are:

• The Bean (Cloud Gate) – almost everyone who slides through Chicago grabs a picture here! Address: 201 E Randolph St, Chicago, IL 60602
• Bixi Beer – One of the prettiest new age breweries with the Chicago skyline in the background. Address: 2515 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647
• Skydeck Chicago – The famous glass floor deck – 103 floors up – giving you a miles-long view of 4 states! Address: 233 S Wacker Dr, Chicago, IL 60606

Indiana’s best road trip stops

Indiana is 270 miles from top to bottom. If your USA road trip planning takes you South from Chicago, you’re more than likely going to need to stop at least once! Our favorite road trip stops along I-65 in Indiana are Indiana Dunes National Park, Three Floyds Brewery, the city of Indianapolis, and many more!

Indiana Dunes National Park (29 Miles)

As you continue south and hop on I-65 from Chicago you can either head south and see the Three Floyds Brewery – or head east and see one of the prettiest beaches in the continental US. You’d most likely run into this area if you were headed North towards New York or to Maine – both of which require passing through I-65 from the West Coast.

Freshwater beaches make for the perfect pit-stop to stretch your legs after being on the road for half a day! Not necessarily quick, but everyone can relax on the beach, grab some food by the water and then get a good night’s rest after spending some time in the sun. It’s rejuvenating and actually at the very top of I-65. Keep in mind that this far north – the waters will be warmest around their hottest months of the year in July and August where temperatures are still only in the 80’s!

• Good Budget Hotels Nearby : The Spring House Inn and Comfort Inn & Suites Near Indiana Dunes State Park
• Indiana Dunes National Park Campground : the most reliable budget-friendly option for serious roadtrippers! Address: 1600 N 25 E, Chesterton, IN 46304

Since Indiana Dunes National Park is a longer stop for road trips across the USA we recommend staying overnight! You’re not far from Chicago (just 30 minutes around the base of Lake Michigan). Once you’re done frolicking on the pristine freshwater beach shores, you can still enjoy Chicago for dinner and drinks to top off a gorgeous afternoon!

3 Floyd’s Brewing, Munster Indiana (37 miles)

3 Floyd’s Brewing in Munster Indiana is a perfect 1-Hour road trip stop. Although the company started brewing back in 1996 – this specific distillery started in 2017. The Munster, Indiana brewery has grown in popularity with their claim to fame ‘Not Normal’ spirits. They distill gin, whiskey, rum, and akvavit. If you’ve never heard of akvavit – it’s worth trying. Called their ‘Nordic Water of Life’ – akvavit is herbal and botanically similar to gin!

Fairoaks Farms – Fairoaks, Indiana (44 Miles)

Besides having one of the coolest murals off I-65, this family-friendly modern farm has a ton to do for weary travelers. Explore seasonal you-pick options, three separate restaurants, and a gorgeous town surrounding this award-winning dairy farm all within one mile from the exit. If you need a place to grab dinner, get a little ice cream and restock the cooler, Fair Oaks Dairy Farm is a perfect stop.

• Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriot Fair Oaks Farms : This hotel is dog-friendly and right on the farm! Address: 708 N 600 E, Fair Oaks, IN 47943

There really is a ton to do at the Fairoaks Farm for road trippers. Try your hand at climbing the world’s tallest milk carton or visit the on-site dog park. If you’re got your furry friend on the road with you – it’s nice to find dog parks along the way!

Indianapolis, Indiana (153 miles)

I-65 goes right around the top of the city and follows the Eastern side of downtown Indianapolis before continuing into Indiana. Because it’s a bigger city – Indianapolis has a two-fold advantage for weary travelers: good coffee and a plethora of hotels.

Not to mention that it’s a great foodie city! Along Massachusets Avenue (affectionately dubbed Mass Ave by the locals) you’ll find breweries, deliciously cozy restaurants, and even a food hall! If you’re just passing through for a quick stop to grab some coffee, give these three Instagrammable coffee shops in Indianapolis a try!

• Kaffeine Coffee Co. – Their dark & sultry exterior totally matches their moody interior and specialty brewing techniques! Address: 707 Fulton St B, Indianapolis, IN 46202
• Amberson Coffee & Grocer – One minute from the interstate and plenty of parking space. Address: 401 S College Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46203
• Bovaconti Coffee – Home in a stunning 1800s restored building. (If we had to pick one, it would be here!) Address: 1042 Virginia Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46203

If you’re the type to take a laid-back approach to road trip planning – you know it’s easier when you have somewhere to get out along the way! Plan your next step, grab the groceries you forget, and stretch your legs! In Indianapolis – consider stretching your legs along the Canal Walk downtown that snakes through the prettiest parts of downtown Indy. After exploring the Canal Walk – head to the City Market (AKA Indianapolis foodie heaven) to grab a couple of snacks before you continue on your road trip!

For when you’re tired of driving, a few great hotels right off I-65:

• Clean & Nice Budget-Friendly Options: Springhill Suites by Marriot Indianapolis Keystone , Holiday Inn Indianapolis North-Carmel , and Indianapolis Marriot East .
• Instagram-worthy Hotels: The Alexander and Ironworks Hotel Indy

Edinburgh Premium Outlets, Indiana (188 Miles)

About 30 miles south of Indianapolis is another of our favorite pit stops off I-65. The Edinburgh Outlets are only about two minutes off the interstate and have a Pottery Barn Outlet store. It’s not the kind of place you go looking for something specific though? Kinda like Target, you go with an open mind and let the Pottery Barn Outlet tell you what you need. You really don’t know what you’ll find!!

A few years ago – Ev found a Le Creuset Dutch oven there . We use it three times a week now so you could say it was a good investment!

Gateway Classic Cars – Memphis, Indiana (248 miles)

About four hours into your journey down Interstate 65 is the ultimate excuse to make your man stop complaining about your bathroom breaks: Gateway Classic Cars’ Showroom. With classic cars for sale like a 1923 Ford Roaster – you can take a 20-minute break to stretch your legs and get your man to actually smile for a photo!

Jeffersonville, Indiana (264 Miles)

This little town is so cute and has really exploded over the last few years with good food and peaceful walks along the river. We highly recommend doing the walking bridge from this side around sunset and grabbing something to eat by the river.

• Hotels Right Off The Exit : Towneplace Suites by Marriot and Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham

The other great thing about Jeffersonville is that it’s quiet and easily walkable . No matter where you park downtown, everything you want is within about a 5 block radius. No matter what you want to eat, boutique hotels are right around the corner.

Best Stops In Kentucky

Our ol’ Kentucky Home is the center of I-65 and the best of all the best road trip stops! ( We think so anyway!) Home to bourbon, horses, and true Southern hospitality – you’ll find plenty of fun places to stop. There are about 140 miles from Louisville to the Kentucky/Tennessee border on I-65 and we’ve found 8 stops perfect for road trips!

Louisville, Kentucky (265 Miles)

We live in Louisville so we know a thing or two about the best places to eat, sleep or hang out for a few hours! If you’re a first-timer we highly suggest hitting a few main highlights like the Louisville Slugger Museum, Louisville’s Waterfront Park, Churchill Downs, or at least one distillery! Here are a few distilleries not far from I-65:

• Old Forester: Louisville’s Favorite Whiskey Distillery Address: 119 W Main St, Louisville, KY 40202
• Angel’s Envy: Our 200-year-old bourbon distillery. (We Louisvillian’s are pretty proud of it!) Address: 500 E Main St, Louisville, KY 40202
• Rabbit Hole Distillery: One of the newest bourbon & rye distilleries in Lou! Address: 711 E Jefferson St, Louisville, KY 40202

Jim Beam Distillery – Clermont, Kentucky (292 Miles)

When we say Kentucky is full of distilleries – we really mean that. Kentucky is home to 95% of the world’s bourbon distilleries! As you journey south on I-65 past our gently rolling hills with cattle grazing, out of nowhere you’ll see a huge billboard for Jim Beam Distillery . This 7th generation family operation started before Kentucky was even a state!

Visit the Stillhouse and if you’re not driving, consider enjoying a world-class cocktail at the Jim Beam Bourbon Bar.

Bernheim Research Forest & Arboretum (290 miles)

One of the best day trips from Louisville , and only 12 minutes from I-65, is Bernheim Forest! This fairytale-like state park is home to an abundance of protected flowers and native Kentucky trees… but also to the three giant wooden sculptures by Thomas Danbo! Mamma Loumari, Little Nis, and Little Elina are scattered through the park’s 16,137 acres!

There is a two-mile walking loop in the park dedicated to seeing all three giants and the perfect way to stretch those cramped road trip legs! If you’re not interested in seeing the giants, you can also have a picnic in the quiet garden by Lake Nevin in Bernheim Forest.

R&S Salvage Grocery (344 Miles)

If you take Exit 65 for 31-W, then head East towards Munfordville for about 9 minutes, you’ll start to see signs for the Amish R&S Salvage Grocery. if you turn right down Irvin Cemetary Road, you’ll find this giant Amish store! It’s actually a huge warehouse with a full-scale bakery inside – serving up some fo the best donuts you’ve ever had.

Fresh pies, pillow-soft glazed donuts, and specialty bread all await your mouthwatering pleasure! The whipped Oreo cookie icing, caramel smothered long johns, and savory cinnamon rolls are basically our kryptonite!!

Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National HISTORICAL park (323 Miles)

Off Exit 91A lays one of Kentucky’s six national parks, the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park. (This historic National Park is only about 15 minutes from the interstate!)

While Illinois is home to many places that Abraham Lincoln called home throughout his life, this is where America’s 16th president was born! Inside the Lincoln Memorial is a replica of the cabin Lincoln was born in and open to the public 9AM – 4:30PM.

After you’re done exploring the memorial – take time to visit the Sinking Spring . Believed to be the original site of Lincoln’s family cabin – this refreshing spot would be perfect for a road trip picnic!

cave city (350 Miles)

If you’ve ever driven through Kentucky, you’ve heard about the magnificent 400 miles of caves below Kentucky’s rolling green hills? What you might not know, however, is that Mammoth Cave is close to the interstate! Only about 7 minutes off the exit, you can schedule a tour at Mammoth Cave ahead of time. Whether you have kids or just you and your partner, plan for your road trip to stop here and take a refreshing break in one of the United States’ only UNESCO World Heritage sites !

If you’re looking for what else to do while you’re in Cave City:

• Kentucky Down Under & Onyx Cave : An interactive wildlife exhibit with live kangaroos!!
• Dinosaur World : The quirkiest of quirky roadside attractions, and perfect for kiddos!

national corvette museum (374 miles)

Three minutes from the interstate you’ll find one of Kentucky’s other claims to fame – the Corvette Plant & National Corvette Museum . Starting in 1963, Corvette has quickly become ‘America’s favorite sports car’. You can tour interactive exhibits and peer down into the sinkhole disaster that occurred in 2014 . Bowling Green, Kentucky (387 miles)

After stopping at the Corvette National museum and continuing South on I-65, you’ll run into Bowling Green, Kentucky. It’s a cute town with tons of good food and surprising attractions; also where Shelbs went to college and where Ev is from!! We could go on and on about all the great little places in Bowling Green for road trippers. When planning your road trip South – there are a few things you’ll for sure want to make a special stop for!

• Griff’s Deli : One of the best places in BG to grab food. Their house-recipe chicken salad is amazing and we get it every time we drive through town. Not to mention their juicy Ranchero wrap? Stuffed full of shaved chicken, avocado, pico, bacon, and their special chipotle sauce… it’s finger-licking worthy!
• Lost River Cave : Underground river tours through a cave !
• WKU Cherry Tree Row : One of our favorite places to see spring come alive in Kentucky! Western Kentucky University’s center walkways through campus are lined with cherry trees that burst into a display of lovely pink petals in the spring. We wait all year to see it!

Tennessee’s Best I-65 Stops

As you cross into Tennessee on I-65, here’s a little about Tennessee to help you know what you’re getting into. Home to honky-tonk music, Tennessee Whiskey, hot chicken, and incredible hiking in the Smoky Mountains – there is something spectacularly beautiful around every bend in the mountains.

Tennessee is like Kentucky is that it’s natural landscape and waters provide the perfect place for distilling whiskey. Just so you’re aware of the divide.. all bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is bourbon . Southerners through Kentucky and Tennessee are real proud of their heritage. The difference is that all whiskeys are made from fermenting grains and aged in barrels. To be classified as bourbon.. 51% of those grains need to be corn.

It might nt seem like a big difference – but bourbon is much sweeter because of the corn!

Nashville, Tennessee (440 Miles)

In the birthplace of hot chicken, you’ll have no trouble finding plenty of places to stop. I-65 wraps around the East side of the city before continuing South – giving you plenty of access to the entire city. If you’re looking to grab something to eat – make sure you stop and get a hot chicken sandwich. Hot chicken started in Nashville in the 1930s when Thronton Prince’s gal tried to get back at him for philandering . She doused his breakfast fried chicken in everything spicy she could find – a legend was born.

• Hattie B’s is our favorite hot chicken stop in Nashville and absolutely worth the crazy line!

You can also visit The Grand Ole Opry, take selfies in front of the many murals you find around town! Overall it’s just a great pit stop.

Nashville Distilleries

If you’re not in the mood for fried chicken doused in a delicious firey sauce – we suggest you stop and do a distillery tour (or 6) . Inside city limits, Nashville has 6 distilleries all open for tours! Here a few favorites:

• Corsair Distillery & Taproom : Specializing in craft whiskeys and gins. They also have a headquarters location open for visitors to see their barrelhouse and bottling operations! Address: 1200 Clinton St. #110, Nashville, TN 37203
• Nashville Craft Distillery : They produce sorghum spirits! A different take on traditional whiskeys. Address: 514 Hagan Street, Nashville, TN, 37203
• Nelson’s Green Briar Distillery : First distilled in 1909, Nelson’s Green Briar has perfected flavoring its products through sugar maple charcoals. Address: 1414 Clinton St, Nashville, TN, 37203

After sampling delicious whiskeys, checking out murals, and live music, once you head South from Nashville you’ll start to discover that drive-through Tennessee is worth taking a road trip along I-65. You’ll wind through the prettiest smoky mountains, alot of times with foggy mountains and over stunningly blue rivers set against the lush Smoky Mountains.

Landmark Booksellers – Franklin, Tennessee (459 Miles)

Starting with the sweetest little love story – Joel & Carol Tomlin started their dream of owning a bookstore in 2005. Landmark Booksellers sits in the historic town square of Franklin Tennessee just minutes from I-65. Since one of Shelbs favorite things to do is read, finding a local gem like this is amazing! There aren’t too many brick & mortar bookstores anymore so it’s always refreshing to find a place to drink in the smell of old paper and glue. (AKA a bookworm’s kryptonite.)

Alabama’s best I-65 Road Trip Stops

The last state on I-65! Alabama is 363 miles on Interstate 65 from the Alabama border sign down to Mobile!

Alabama Welcome Center (526 miles)

You can’t miss it – this rocket stands at 224 feet tall right off the highway at Exit 340B. The Saturn 1B Rocket was part of the Saturn 5 Launch for a few NASA missions, and now makes its permanent home at this Exit. A great place to stretch your legs out of the car for just a minute! (And to let your furry friends out because it’s surrounded by grass!)

Birmingham, Alabama (630 Miles)

BBQ. A little more BBQ. And maybe a lot more BBQ… drizzled with Alabama White Sauce. Just trust us – Shelbs family lives in Alabama and they just know that Southern BBQ is worth a stop when you’re planning your road trip! You’ll find a ton of cute places to grab a bite as you continue South through the city. Here are a few favorites:

• Full Moon BBQ – Their vinaigrette slaw and ‘Half-Moon’ cookies were featured in Southern Living and Bon Appetit magazines. There are 7 locations along I-65 to stop and eat!
• Jim ‘N Nick’s Community BBQ – With 5 locations in Birmingham alone, this Southern staple is ready for you to grab a bite of their juicy brisket and Banana Pudding! (If you’ve never had Banana Pudding in the South.. more affectionately known by Southerners as ‘Nanner Puddin’ – you just need to. )
• SAW’s BBQ – Named the ‘best BBQ in America’ , SAW’s has been featured in Paula Deen Magazine, Gastronomy Magazine, Texas Monthly, Delish, Southern Living, and The New York Times! There are six locations in Birmingham so you’ll have plenty of options when cruising through the city!

Montgomery, Alabama (719 mIles)

Home to the start of the Civil Rights Movement, and Alabama’s capital city is Montgomery. One of our favorite stops in Montgomery would be The Rosa Parks Library & Museum! This strong-willed woman is an inspiration to many and a great place to stop and take a moment before continuing on your road trip! There are also many other famous Civil Rights memorials around the city in including The Legacy Museum and The National Memorial for Peace and Justice.

If you’re looking for something to eat, there are a ton of great Southern spots waiting to tempt you with their delicious cuisines:

• Capitol Oyster Bar : Alabama’s best seafood bar! Address: 617 Shady Street
• Vintage Cafe : Serving breakfast, lunch, and delicious coffees in an aesthetically pleasing kinda way! Address: 416 Cloverdale Road
• Common Bond Brewery : Serving up all of your craft beer needs! Address: 424 Bibb St Suite #150

Mobile, Alabama (886 Miles)

Envision stopping in Mobile, Alabama’s historic district for a perfect road trip stop. Likened to a mini-New Orleans, this district’s brightly colored buildings, intricate iron balconies and palm trees swaying in the wind are enough to make anyone want to shake off the traveling dust. You can also find some of the best seafood in Alabama because it comes straight from Mobile Bay.

• Did you know that Mobile is also the home of ‘Bubba’ Blues from Forest Gump ?! Who doesn’t love Bubba!

After leaving Mobile head to Alabama’s prettiest beaches – Gulf shores, Dauphin island, and Orange Beach . We hope you enjoy your 900 mile road trip across the USA!

Road Trip Planning in The USA

You could read a million articles about what major destinations to include in planning a road trip with stops. If you’re interested in seeing more than just your start and end destinations and slow traveling sross the US – plan ahead for a few extra stops! American road trips wouldn’t be the same without the quirky road side attractions, stunning natural landmarks, and incredible local restaurants.

• The best way to plan your road trip is to first find your most direct route.

Find the best way to get from A to B, and do a little planning for what you want to see along the way. Just in case you get into an area where there isn’t any cell service etc! There are hundreds of miles of plains and mountains where you could lose cell service and sometimes those amazing roadside attractions aren’t around great cell service.

We are on a long road trip right now. And we certainly have been looking for interesting places to stop along the way. The route down I65 from Chicago looks like an interesting new road trip for us. I love the varied stops you picked. Some tasty ones too! Keeping this for planning.

Best U.S. road trips

1.  Route 66 | CA to IL

It would be blasphemous not to include Route 66 at the top of any road trip roundup. The iconic Mother Road is one of the U.S. Highway System’s original routes, starting in downtown Chicago and winding its way across the country to the Santa Monica pier. Covering eight states and approximately 2,500 miles, the historic highway is punctuated with pops of kitsch and classic Americana from a bygone era. 

Can’t-miss pit stop: Join a guided tour of the 400-million-year-old Meramec Caverns in Missouri. Jesse James famously used them as a hideout, and the Jesse James Wax Museum is just minutes away.

Trip length:  2,448 miles 

2.  Highway 1 to Big Sur | CA

This show-stealing drive may have shot to fame after its cameo in the Big Little Lies opening credits montage, but it’s been a beloved route for in-the-know motorists for years. This California coastal classic is chock-full of stomach drops and treacherous turns, but it’s all worth it for the world-class panoramas along the way. Be prepared: Some stretches can last 40 miles without a single bathroom break or gas station.

Can’t-miss pit stop: Sure, you’ve seen it in a million car commercials, but did you even drive along Highway 1 if you don’t have a picture of Bixby Bridge to prove it? Big Sur ’s answer to the Golden Gate in San Francisco , this impressive open-spandrel arch bridge soars 260-foot above cliffs and a steep canyon.

Trip length: 150 miles from San Francisco to Big Sur

3.  Route 101 | CA to WA

Like many classic road trip routes across the U.S., this one comprises sections of road that form a continuous experience. By following Route 101 —which becomes California State Route 1, better known as the Pacific Coast Highway, or PCH, which then briefly returns to Route 101 once again—you can, to all intents and purposes, drive from the American/Canadian border, just north of Seattle... all the way down the entire West Coast of the U.S. all the way to the American/Mexican border, just south of San Diego. And that, my friends, is the mother of all road trips. 

Can’t-miss pit stop:  This road trip arguably incorporates some of the best views the country offers. From the amazing coastline of Astoria to the Redwood Forest National Park, plus Napa, and Sonoma...the list goes on.

Trip length:  1,500 miles from Los Angeles to Olympia, WA

4.  Blue Ridge Parkway | VA to NC

In the mood for a leisurely,  legendary drive? If so, head for the Blue Ridge Parkway, where the speed limit sits at a comfortable 45mph and commercial vehicles are strictly prohibited. Snaking through the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina, the 469-mile route connects the Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains national parks. For prime leaf-peeping, visit in autumn when foliage explodes in a brilliant display of crimson, auburn and golden leaves.  

Can’t-miss pit stop: Spend some time at Mount Pisgah in North Carolina, famous for its extensive network of hiking trails and the storied Pisgah Inn , which dates back to 1919.

Trip length:  470 miles

5.  Overseas Highway | FL

For a tropical escape, blast some Jimmy Buffett and hit the Overseas Highway. The route follows US-1, connecting the Florida Keys during a 113-mile, sun-drenched drive. Originally constructed in 1928 and rebuilt in the 1980s, the continuous road connects Key Largo down to laid-back Key West . Cruise over Seven Mile Bridge (one of the longest in the world) while soaking in towering lighthouses, colorful coral reef parks and strips of white-sand beaches. Can’t-miss pit stop:  At Islamorada, which encompasses six of the Florida Keys, visitors can swim with dolphins at the Theater of the Sea  and explore  ruins from the 1800s in  Indian Key Historic State Park .

Trip length: 113 miles

6.  Going-to-the-Sun Road | MT

Originally constructed to promote tourism and encourage people to visit America’s national parks, this remarkable road has achieved its purpose since its completion in 1932. The 50-mile artery carves through Montana’s Glacier National Park, shooting through the Rockies up and over the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. Be sure to watch out for blind curves and dramatic drop-offs, and avoid this one in the winter months, when snowbanks can reach 80ft in depth.

Can’t-miss pit stop: In the summertime, plan to pause at Logan Pass. Soaring to an elevation of 6,646 feet, it has expansive overlooks, grazing mountain goats, and blankets of rainbow-hued wildflower meadows.

Trip length: 50 miles

7.  Santa Fe to Taos Loop | NM

Pack a pair of cowboy boots and set course for the Santa Fe Loop, woven between the valleys of the Rio Grande and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in New Mexico. This all-American road trip adventure looks straight out of a classic Western movie, tumbleweeds and all. Rambling desertscapes and the pueblo communities of Ojo Caliente make this drive a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Can’t-miss pit stop:  Take a breather in the town of Taos , located in northern New Mexico’s high desert. Known for its historic adobe architecture, the spot has numerous museums (like the Taos Art Museum ) and racecourse rafting along the Rio Grande and the Wild Rivers Recreation Area.

Trip length:  70 miles

8.  Lincoln Highway | NY to CA

The little-known Lincoln Highway was the first road for automobiles across the whole of the U.S. It was conceived in 1912 by Indiana entrepreneur Carl G. Fisher and formally opened a year later. It runs coast-to-coast from Times Square in New York City to Lincoln Park in San Francisco, originally traveling through 13 states. However, in 1928, a realignment relocated the highway through the northern tip of West Virginia, thus bringing the total to 14 states, 128 counties and more than 700 cities, towns and villages, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California. Since then, the Highway has been gradually replaced with numbered designations after establishing the Numbered Highway System, with most of the route becoming U.S. Route 30 from Pennsylvania to Wyoming. But, like other classic cross-country road trips, with just a little research, you can easily navigate along the entire length of the original route.

Can’t-miss pit stop: The Lincoln Highway passes very close to Cheyanne Mountain, the home of North American Aerospace Defense Command, otherwise known as NORAD . While public tours are unavailable, this location has appeared in several movies and TV shows, including War Games and  Stargate SG1 .

Trip length:  3,389 miles

9.  Route 12 | Utah

Take in the splendor of the red rocks along Utah's Scenic Byway 12, which connects near Panguitch in the west to Torrey on the northeast side of the state. Climb through the Dixie National Forest , drive through red rock arches, stop at scenic overlooks, and enjoy views of the Henry Mountains and  Capitol Reef National Park as you go. Popular Utah destination  Bryce Canyon  is also close by.  

Can’t-miss pit stop: Witness the natural "stairs" at  Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument . Pro tip: the views from  Escalante's   Kiva Koffeehouse  are not to miss. 

Trip length:  122 miles

10.  Texas Hill Country | TX

The best way to witness the Lone Star State’s boundless beauty is by car. Hill Country, sandwiched between San Antonio and Austin , is known for its undulating hills and postcard-worthy bluebonnet blooms. The spellbinding expanse is dotted with charming farmland roads, award-winning wineries and orchards that churn out bushels of mouth-watering apples, peaches and pomegranates every year. For meat lovers, Hill Country is also bursting at the seams with mom-and-pop barbecue joints.  

Can’t-miss pit stop: Enchanted Rock State Natural Area has long attracted history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts. Located just outside of Fredericksburg, the climbable pink granite mountain shows signs of human settlement that date back more than 10,000 years.

Trip length:  73 miles from Austin to San Antonio

11.  Hana Highway | HI

Hawaii is best known for its lush landscapes and aquatic adventures, but America’s 50th state is also home to one of the top road trips in the U.S. This drive through paradise links Kahului to Hana during 60 miles of jaw-dropping turns. Most can complete the journey in about three hours, but midday bumper-to-bumper traffic can seriously inflate travel time. Along the way, look out for swaying mango trees, dramatic sea cliffs and colonies of monk seals soaking in the sun.  

Can’t-miss pit stop: Exit at mile marker 32 to explore Waiʻānapanapa State Park , where undulating emerald jungles meet the rugged, black basalt lava coastlines.

Trip length: 64 miles

12.  Route 6 | RI to MA

Route 6 spans the entirety of the country, but the segment we most recommend starts in Providence, Rhode Island, and extends to Provincetown, Massachusetts, at the very end of the tip of Massachusetts. Along the way, take in the charming New England towns and beaches, stopping as you please along the way. 

Can’t-miss pit stop:  Pull over in Cape Cod to stroll the beach and the town's charming downtown before continuing your journey. 

13.  Anchorage to Valdez | AK

Witness firsthand the stunning sites of Alaska on this short but sweet drive. The 300-mile route connects the Glenn and Richardson highways, allowing you to cruise past gleaming glaciers and mountain ranges that boast so many sky-high peaks, many of them yet to be named. The seven-hour trek can easily be drawn out to appreciate the natural wonders of the Last Frontier, including the colorful Spirit Houses of Eklutna Village and the Matanuska Glacier Scenic Turnout.

Can’t-miss pit stop: The easy hike along Thunderbird Falls Trail is a popular excursion that leads to an impressive 200-foot waterfall. More intrepid explorers should consider ice climbing on the Matanuska Glacier, about 100 miles northeast of Anchorage.

Trip length: 300 miles

14.  Great River Road | MN to MS

One of the longest scenic byways in America, the Great River Road traverses roughly 3,000 miles along the mighty Mississippi River. Stretching from northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, the breathtaking drive intersects 10 states and takes about 10 days to complete. The well-marked route is easily identifiable, thanks to its iconic green pilot’s wheel road signs. It’s also celebrated for its diverse array of natural, cultural, historical and recreational sites along the way. Can’t-miss pit stop: If the Great River Road was a meal, then New Orleans would be its dessert course. The last stop on the epic route, the Big Easy, has incredible culinary, jazz and cultural scenes. 

Trip length: 3,000 miles

15.  Olympic Peninsula Loop | WA

The Olympic Peninsula Loop is another West Coast wonder, encircling Washington’s Olympic National Park. Swerving, dipping and diving, this 330-mile drive stands out because of the striking diversity of its terrain. Boulder-speckled Pacific coastlines, verdant temperate rainforests and the snow-capped Cascade Range can all be witnessed during a single-day trip. Be sure to sample local oysters and fresh clams, another regional specialty. Can’t-miss pit stop: Swing by Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort, tucked away in Port Angeles, for a restorative soak in the natural mineral springs. No swimsuit? No worries: The springs welcome bathers in the buff.

Trip length:  330 miles

16.  Park Loop Road | ME

Park Loop Road is the primary route for driving through and exploring   Acadia National Park . Without stopping, the drive takes about an hour without traffic. But you're definitely going to want to stop to take in the beauty of one of the most visited national parks in the US. The park features beautiful landscapes and some of the most diverse wildlife on the Eastern Seaboard. Every season brings beauty, but the fall foliage is particularly spectacular.

17.  Beartooth Highway | MT to WY

This 68-mile route is a National Scenic Byways All-American Road and brings drivers from southwest Montana through northwest Wyoming right into Yellowstone National Park. First opened in 1937, this eclectic drive has been called one of the most beautiful America has to offer. Highlights along the route include incredible alpine plateaus, forested valleys, sparkling glacial lakes and unforgettable wildlife. Open exclusively in the summer, the route also climbs Beartooth Pass, a scenic stretch between Cooke City and Red Lodge, Montana.

Can’t-miss pit stop: Check out Beartooth Corridor, where visitors can hike through the highlands and spot moose, elk, black bears, wolves and more.

Trip length: 68 miles

18.  Volcanic Legacy Byway | CA to OR

For truly unusual and spectacular views, pack up the car and head for the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, connecting California’s Lassen National Park with Crater Lake in Oregon. The north-to-south route covers about 500 miles, tracing along geological formations created by volcanic activity of the Cascade Mountain Range. The drive ventures through the majestic Shasta Valley and offers unobstructed vistas of Mount Shasta, the second-tallest volcano in the country.  

Can’t-miss pit stop: There are countless things to see and do during a visit, but don’t miss Petroglyph Point , one of the country’s largest and most accessible panels of Native American rock art.

Road trip attractions along the way – these are what create great road trip stories are made of. I’ve written a lot about road trips lately, and everything I’ve seen, but I had to create a list of roadside sights along the way on these trips. These are the things that had me pull off to the shoulder, or park and explore or just shake my head moments. These are mostly in the southwest, as most of my travels in the 12 months have been through California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. I’d love to see your comments about where we need to get the next “I pulled over for this moment”. This is my collection of weird stuff I saw on road trips and some of the most beautiful scenery.

These road trip attractions are in no particular order, but were accidentally found along the way in my other road trip adventures.

1. The Cabazon Dinosaurs Road Trip Wonders

Cabazon, California

As you drive from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, California you may think you are seeing a mirage out in the desert. The first time I drove past the large dinosaurs in Cabazon, I had to make an exit and turn back around to confirm I saw what I thought I saw. Two of the dinosaurs are visible from the highway and are accessible with nearby parking. Know there is a $13.00 admission to see 50 dinosaurs previously featured in movies. That includes the staircase to walk up inside Mr.Rex to his mouth.

2. Antelope Poppy Reserve (More Dinosaur Roadside Sightings)

Lancaster, california.

Antelope Valley is famous for its o range poppy reserve , and the incredible blooms that occur each spring (March-April) for a brief time. Located in Lancaster, California, there is an annual poppy festival to celebrate these blooms.

Now: Annnnddd…because it’s me, as we were driving past the reserve, these two dinosaurs were just dancing on the side of the road. Did I mention it was April and 90 F degrees? This is probably the most unexpected roadside sight I’ve seen so far.

Bonus: If you are in Lancaster, check out the Musical Road on Avenue G in between 30th and 40th Street West. If you drive 55 mph and roll down your windows, you might be treated to a song from the road!

3. Seeing Seven Magic Mountains

Along Highway 15 you’ll find a series of neon painted boulders and huge crowds of people taking photos. Because this is known as Seven Magic Mountains , an art installation of a series of bright-colored, stacked boulders 25 stories high that draws Instagrammers from everywhere. The rocks are fun to photograph, but here is what they don’t tell you: it’s crowded.

What’s tricky is trying to get a photograph without a lot of people. It’s windy. In March, it was very cold. It’s a rocky walk to get from the parking area to the rocks themselves. There are no facilities, because you are in the middle of the desert. So please use common sense.

And then there’s me.

For instance, here’s my Instagram post: There are always see these amazing Instagram photos and the women are wearing some glam outfit and look all sexy.

I look like this partly because I was up at 2:30 this morning. Then driving all day. Because it’s freaking windy as hell & freezing. Now I have my winter coat on. Can you see how my warm, bulky sweater is rolled up so it doesn’t hang out of there bottom? My lips are raw and hair is tangled from the wind. I’m damn cold. Dig me.

4. The Virgin River Gorge & The Narrows

I-15 Highway from Nevada through Arizona to Utah

After exploring Red Rock Canyon State Park in Nevada, we continued on our Epic Road Trip to Zion and Bryce Canyon. To get there, we drove out of Mesquite, Nevada on Highway 15 and through a corner of Arizona about 30 miles long to St.George, Utah.

We pass through “The Narrows”, named for limestone cliffs about 500 feet high and then into the Virgin River Gorge. This small stretch of highway had some of the most jaw-dropping scenery I’ve encountered. Luckily, we drove through at the most opportune times in early morning light and golden hour–no filters used on these photos.

6. Alien Fresh Beef Jerky Roadside Attraction

Baker, California

You’ll see the signs long before you reach Baker. At first, you might think it is a joke, but then realize this 1800 square foot warehouse roadside sight is all about an alien experience. What began as a roadside stop for healthy snacks but now has even expanded to selling online “Abducted Cow Pineapple Teriyaki”. But wait, there’s more, there is a UFO Hotel coming! Currently under construction.

7. Shoe Tree on The Loneliest Road in America

Highway 50, Nevada

So here’s the story behind the original Shoe Tree, a famous road trip attraction along the way on the Loneliest Road in America. A couple was camping under the tree, and got in an argument. Then she threatened to go home, and he replied with “then you’ll walk home barefoot!”, threw her shoes into the tree and he stormed off and drove to the local bar (Middlegate, Nevada-see the other post for more!).

The husband was convinced to return to her, and he threw his shoes at hers, now both pairs are stuck in the tree. Soon, others started to join in, throwing their shoes up in the tree as well. Unfortunately, vandals cut down the original shoe tree in December 2010, but a new shoe tree was designated in 2017, now located between Middlegate and Cold Springs as an updated roadside sight.

8. Driving Zzyzx Road: The Roadside Attraction Is The Road

The roadside attraction along the highway from LA to Vegas is the road itself, from the weirdest road name to the history of the town behind the name .

Known formerly as Sida Springs, but now Zzyzx, California is now an unincorporated area. It was named because it wanted to give it the distinction of being the last road to be listed alphabetically (why not, I guess). Now iconic as being used in songs, album titles, movies, and other media. In reality, the almost 5 mile stretch of road has more remnants of historic wagon trails and early railroads. If you want to visit here, you will have to learn how to say it, because it’s also won the award of most difficult road name to pronounce (Readers Digest).

Los Angeles Street Art District

If you happen to be traveling through LA, make sure you drive through downtown LA Arts District. Tucked away near Skid Row and Little Tokyo, this is an up and coming neighborhood with boutique shops and cafes. The main roadside attraction here is the graffiti art painted on almost every building in the neighborhood. For more photos, check out Street Art LA .

Planning an Epic I-5 Road Trip – Best Places to Stop Along the Way!

Need to drive between California, Oregon, and Washington? It’s all about the I-5! Don’t make the mistake of just driving through, there’s so much to see and do along I-5 that you can really enjoy your road trip. This post will reveal all our favorites and those must-stop attractions.

Traveling the I-5, for us, is like driving home after a long day’s work. Living on the west coast, we’ve done it so many times in both directions, and each time we find something new to love.

The I-5 begins in California south of San Diego, right on the border of Mexico, and continues through Oregon and on up to Blaine, Washington, on the Canadian border. From start to end, it measures a little over 1,382 miles , and one of the main reasons it was built is because it has always been a route used by local native Americans and traders.

Our article talks about all the fun things to stop and see along this iconic route. And what would a road trip be without amazing food ? We’ve included all of our favorite, always-stop, food stops along the route. Many of the cities mentioned have the interstate going right through them, but for our purposes of having as much fun as possible, we’ve included amazing sites, towns, national parks, and more that you will enjoy that are only up to an hour off of the highway. Who said you can’t have any fun while you are trying to get from Point A to Point B?

• Tips for Traveling I-5

Why visit: San Diego is one of those southern California cities that everyone must visit. It’s got great museums, and a vibrant downtown with the gaslight district. It’s on the water, where you can do all kinds of harbor cruises, whale watching, experience the navy ships, and even do some tide-pooling.

What will the kids think? San Diego is definitely a favorite for the kids. With one of the best zoos in the entire United States (maybe even the world), beautiful parks, and lots of water activities, they’ll want to go back again and again.

Best tip for visiting: It’s all about the water, so take one of the harbor cruises and really get a sense of what the city is all about.

Cabrillo National Monument

Why visit: Cabrillo National Monument, located in the city of San Diego, is a fantastic part of U.S. history that most people have never heard about. It’s named after the first European explorer to explore the west coast, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. His life story and explorations are interesting to learn about in the exhibits. Along with this fascinating history, the site also has a lighthouse, wonderful flora, and great tide-pooling. It’s well worth a few hours.

What will the kids think? The museum of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo is more interesting than you might expect. Reading his unique story, one that is largely unknown, was fascinating. If you are going with kids, make sure to do that part first, then hike up to the Loma Lighthouse to have a look, and finally head down to the tide pools. Your kids won’t stop talking about it.

How to get there from I-5: Depending on which way you are driving on the I-5, you can take two different exits. Driving north, take the Hawthorne Street/ Airport exit. It will take you about 25 minutes to get to Cabrillo. From the south take the Rosecrans St. exit. Cabrillo is located on a Navy base, so you must enter it through Catalina Blvd. The gate is not always manned, but if it is, the navy guards will let you through when you tell them your destination. If there is no one at the gate, proceed and make sure to follow all speed limit signs.

Best tip for visiting: Weekends tend to be super busy. It’s much better to go on a weekday. If a Saturday or Sunday is your only choice, go as early as possible. The road really starts backing up by about 11:00 AM. Also, there are no food or drink facilities. Pack a lunch, lots of water, and enjoy a picnic down on the beach.

Mission San Juan Capistrano

Why visit : Mission San Juan Capistrano, located in the town of San Juan Capistrano, is one of the best preserved and most famous of California’s historic Spanish Missions. One of it’s big claims to fame is the miraculous “Return of the Swallows” which takes place every year on St. Joseph day, March 19th.

While the swallows don’t return in the same numbers as in the past, there is still a major celebration at the Mission. Regardless of when you visit, Mission San Juan Capistrano is a beautifully preserved part of California history with lush gardens and interesting exhibits.

What will the kids think ? Of course, if you are able to time your visit with the Return of the Swallows celebrations, kids will love the festivities, dancing, music, and the parade. Other times of the year still offer plenty for the younger family members. Be sure and check out the Native American museum with its excellent interactive stations.

How to get there from I-5: Take exit 82 and follow the signs to the mission.

Best tip for visiting: Make sure to ask for the information for California students. It’s a workbook with lots of fun information and activities based on the California Missions. Even though it’s made for fourth graders in the California school system, kids of all ages from other places will love it, as well.

Best place to camp: Doheny State Beach Campground , only 10 minutes from Mission San Juan Capistrano, has camping on the beach, surfing, picnic facilities, tide pools, and aquariums.

Beginning of the Pacific Coast Highway

Dana Point is the official beginning of California Highway 1 or the Pacific Coast Highway.

How to get there from I-5: Take exit 79 and follow the signs to Dana Point. You will see a historical marker and some informational placards marking the site. We don’t expect you to just visit this site, but if you’re on a round trip and have the time, the Pacific Coast Highway is a great way to get back up the coast without driving I-5 both ways.

Disneyland Park

Why visit: Walt Disney’s vision for a family entertainment destination took shape in the form of Disneyland in 1955. It has been growing and growing ever since. Today the park has more than 80 attractions, shows, and exhibits scheduled throughout the day and night, and three major resort hotels right on the property. This is ground zero for all things Disney, and is easily capable of filling up two or three days of an I-5 road trip.

What will the kids think? Let’s face it, unless the children have never been exposed to any Disney movies or TV shows, they will be begging their parents for a stop at this world-famous theme park. And it is difficult to drive through Anaheim on the I-5 without spotting it right there along the road. Plan accordingly.

Best tip for visiting: Disney offers a special discount for park-goers with a military or Coast Guard affiliation. Active duty, retirees, and family members can purchase 3 and 4 Day Park Hoppers at the Tickets and Tours office on base for significant savings.

How to get there from I-5: Take exit 110 and follow the signs to Disney Parking.

Los Angeles

Why visit: Hollywood! Actually, there is much more to Los Angeles than just Hollywood, although that probably is one of the biggest draws. From hipster beaches to the red carpet, there is so much to do in this city, it deserves at least a few days off of your I-5 trip to do it right.

However, if you just want to drive in and get a quick taste, you can easily stop at the Walk of the Stars and take a ride down Rodeo Drive at the very least. There’s so much to do, no matter what you love, you can find it in L.A.

What will the kids think? This will be a highlight on the kid’s list. If you really want to make their day, you can book a day at Universal Studios, especially if they are Harry Potter fans. A little further out of the city heading north, kids will fall in love with the animals at The Gentle Barn in Santa Clarita.

Best tip for visiting: Los Angeles is just too big and too hard for a quickie in my opinion. However, we know that you are probably in a time crunch. I would recommend a 2 hour tour of Hollywood and Beverly Hills, where you can see some homes of famous people and get a feel for the city. Then I’d eat a great lunch or dinner and get out. Just plan to stay longer next time.

Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve

Why visit: If you are traveling in the spring, it would be a shame to miss the poppy bloom. The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is the best place to get the best photos!

Make sure to check their website and see if you are hitting it at the right time. This detour will take you a couple of hours, but it’s something that you just won’t want to miss!

What will the kids think? They might think you are a little crazy at first, but I’ll bet as soon as they see the flowers, they’ll be ecstatic. There’s a wonderful interpretive center on site that is air-conditioned and interesting as well, so they’ll think it’s a good stop.

How to get there from I-5: Take exit 138 off of I-5, near the town of Gorman. It’s about a 50 minute drive to the poppy reserve, and it’s well worth it if the poppies are in bloom. After you are off the highway, turn right and follow Route 138 until you get to 170 St. (at the T junction). Take a right, and then turn left on Lancaster Road for about 2 miles.

Best tip for visiting: Be ready to walk, with good shoes, wide-brimmed sunhat, and lots of water!

Channel Islands National Park

Why visit? The natural marine beauty of this park is indisputable, and the guides are full of fun facts as well as the unique scientific and historical information you are bound to get on these types of tours. This stretch of the California coast is absolutely beautiful and the ocean around the Channel Islands is teeming with marine animals and birds.

What will the kids think? All kids love to ride on boats, and you can’t get out to the islands without taking the cruise, so they will really have a great time!

How to get there from I-5: From I-5, it’s less than an hour drive to Channel Islands National Park (about 50 minutes). Take exit 172 and follow Highway 126 west to Oxnard.

Best tip for visiting: While boating around the Channel Islands , make sure to wear a wide-brimmed sun hat and wear sunscreen. The boat is comfortable, but there’s not really any shade. You will want to be prepared.

Ronald Reagan Presidential Library

Why visit: There’s so many reasons! Visit the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and read and experience Cold War history like the fall of the Berlin wall, as well as walking through Air Force One; two of the best exhibits!

What will the kids think? There are plenty of interactive exhibits and it’s full of facts that are pretty recent history. One of the items the kids will love the best is Reagan’s love of jelly beans and his jelly bean portrait.

How to get there from I-5: The Ronald Reagan Library is only about a 35 minute drive off I-5. From either direction, take the Viewline Drive/ Simi Valley exit and follow the signs.

Best tip for visiting: Plan to spend at least two hours there, more if you want to eat in the café or have a picnic. There really is a lot to do, and it’s pretty well done.

Why visit: Sacramento is a great place to visit because it has a fun downtown area that harkens back to Gold Rush days. You can visit Old Sacramento and feel like you are in the Old West.

What will the kids think? Sacramento is a lively town, and there’s plenty for kids to do. It has all kinds of children-friendly activities from rock climbing to wildlife viewing and even petting. Kids will love the State Railroad Museum , so don’t miss it.

How to get there from I-5: Take exit 65A to get to Old Sacramento where you will want to start your exploration.

Best tip for visiting: Check out the rose garden downtown, near the capitol building. It’s a great place for taking family photos.

Why visit: Eugene is a great place to stop for a breather while driving I-5. As the state’s second largest city, there is plenty to do. We think you’d enjoy the Museum of Natural and Cultural History where you can meet an ancient ice sloth. For a great lunchtime stop head to the Eugene Oregon Provisions Market Hall where you will be spoiled for choice.

What will the kids think? Eugene has plenty of fun activities that kids will enjoy. Take them to the Cascades Raptor Center. With over 40 avian residents, the kids will learn all about the owls and eagles in the area. They’ll love it.

Why visit: The capital of Oregon, Salem is known for its many gardens with colorful flowers, as well as its proximity to many Willamette Valley wineries. If it’s history and old-world charm that you love , visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Gordon House (which is also in the Oregon Garden) and the gorgeous Gallon House Covered Bridge.

What will the kids think? Kids will love the fresh air and riding on the Riverfront Carousel. Other things to do with kids include Bush’s Pasture Park and if you have time, the Enchanted Forest theme park.

How to get there from I-5: Easy. Salem is right on I-5. Exit 253 will take you right downtown or get you on your way to the Oregon Garden.

Best tip for visiting: Being a city of flowers, late spring and early summer are the absolute best times to visit Salem. However, no matter what time of year you are traveling through, there will be lots of wines to try, so you’ll still love it.

Why visit? Oregon’s largest city is both quirky and fun. With its hipster vibe, penchant for great eats, and love of the arts, it is the perfect stopover. From visiting the famous Powell’s Book Store to searching out the kitsch in the multitude of antique shops, everyone loves this city.

What will the kids think? Food trucks and an aerial tram with fantastic views will get the kids on board, but add to it all the outdoor parks and tax-free shopping, and they will love it.

How to get there from I-5: You can’t miss it! You drive right through it and you can see much of the city right from the road, but don’t let that let you pass it by, you’ll regret it later.

Best tip for visiting: The coffee shops and craft breweries in this town will make you want to stay. Trust me!

Vista House and Multnomah Falls of the Columbia River Gorge

Why visit: Built specifically to inspire travelers, it’s almost a crime if you don’t stop to see Vista House. Don’t worry, though, Crown Point is a majestic overlook where you can enjoy amazing Columbia River views. Vista House, itself, is a great place to do a little souvenir shopping and savor a cup of coffee. It’s not a stop that will take long, and you know what? It’s worth it.

What will the kids think? Kids will love Vista House just for the run around and look at the great views options, let alone a well-timed snack.

How to get there from I-5: The easiest and fastest way to get to the beauty of the Columbia River Gorge is to follow the I-84 East and take exit 22 which will put you on the Historic Columbia River Scenic Highway. It will take you about 30 minutes to get to your first stop, then Multnomah falls is just another 20 minutes past there.

Why visit: Astoria is a super fun city, with a laid-back vibe, about one hour off of I-5. It’s a great place to spend a few days or a few hours. It is on the coast, and therefore the views are amazing. Beaches are nearby, and the town is just quirky and fun.

What will the kids think? There’s so much to do in Astoria, but one of the most fun things is to visit the Columbia River Maritime Museum where the kids can sail remote control boats. Another fun jaunt is to climb to the top of the Astoria Column.

How to get there from I-5: Take Washington exit 39 even though Astoria is in Oregon. It’s right on the border and this way is a shorter drive. Off of the exit go over the Lewis and Clark bridge following signs to Rainier, then Highway 30 the rest of the way to Astoria.

Best tip for visiting: Don’t cut your time short on this stop. The area is well worth a couple of days as there is so much to do. Make sure to eat some of the seafood that is on offer all over town. It doesn’t get fresher than this.

Lewis and Clark National Historic Park

Why visit: One of the most interesting national parks, it has sites in both Oregon and Washington. It includes a fort, some beaches, a few museum exhibits, and of course great docent talks. It’s an all-around fun time.

W hat will the kids think? From learning about the Lewis and Clark expedition, especially where their dog was concerned, and romping around on gorgeous beaches. They’re going to love it!

How to get there from I-5: Lewis and Clark National Park is very close to Astoria, so follow those directions first. From Astoria, take Highway 101 south. There are plenty of signs. Your first stop should be Fort Clatsop.

Best tip for visiting: The Pacific Northwest can be cool and overcast even in summer, but don’t let that stop you from exploring the beaches and tide pools. There’s tons of marine life as well as driftwood to enjoy.

Mount St. Helens Volcano and Visitor Center

Why visit: This is the site of the largest volcanic eruption in continental North America in the last 100 years and the views are amazing. The world class visitor center offers information about volcanoes, as well as the surrounding area.

What will the kids think? Who doesn’t love a good park and some views? Also the kids will enjoy the movie in the visitor center.

How to get there: Take exit 49 and follow along the scenic Washington state highway 504 (east). It will take just about an hour, except that the views are pretty stunning, so add some additional photo time.

Mount Rainier National Park

Why visit: Climbing to an altitude of 14,000 feet, Mount Rainier dominates the skyline as you drive along I-5 between Seattle and Olympia. There are two main entrances into the park, Paradise and Sunrise, and both offer stunning views, vistas, and hiking opportunities.

What will the kids think? Kids will be excited to be driving and hiking on an active volcano. But they will enjoy hiking through meadows carpeted with wildflowers even more.

How to get there from I-5: To get to Mount Rainier National Park , take exit 77 from Chehalis and follow route 12 east to route 7 north. In Elbe you will turn on the 706 east to the entrance of the park. It’s a little over an hour from the highway, and of course once you get there, you are taking the scenic drives. If this is on your agenda, plan on spending a night or two in the area.

Best tip for visiting: Even though it’s rated as one of the best places to visit in September in the US , we like to also visit in August to catch the wildflowers in full bloom. It’s a magical time.

Why visit: Located at the southernmost end of Puget Sound, Olympia is the Washington State Capitol. The capitol building is in a gorgeous park like setting complete with cherry trees, fountains, and flower beds. As with many other state capitol cities, Olympia has a charming small town feel with a walkable downtown and harbor area that are both fun to explore.

What will the kids think? Kids of all ages love visiting the Hands On Children’s Museum in downtown Olympia. This is the Pacific Northwest’s largest, and most popular, children’s museum with loads of STEAM activities for children of all ages.

How to get there from I-5: For the state capitol and downtown take exit 105 (southbound or northbound) and follow signs for City Center.

Best tip for visiting: Visit Olympia during cherry blossom season, late-March through mid-April, for the most stunning views of the capitol building and grounds. Also, arrive on Thursday through Sunday (April – October) to make a trip to the Olympia Farmer’s Market.

Why visit: Tacoma has a beautiful historic downtown with an eclectic and vibrant charm. It is an old port city with a colorful past filled with odd characters from the old railroad and logging days. But that color can best be found nowadays in its thriving glass art community in the incredible Museum of Glass. Another reason to stop here is to take in a show in the venerable Tacoma dome where performances by International music stars like Elton John or Celine Dion take the stage.

What will the kids think? Kids will be fascinated by the glass blowing demonstrations at the Museum of Glass. Or if museums aren’t their thing, take them to the Point Defiance Zoo where they can get up close and personal with tigers, penguins, lemurs, and more.

How to get there from I-5: The highway divides the city in half with several exits to choose from. For the downtown, however, take exit 133 and follow signs to Downtown on highway 705.

Best tip for visiting: For a great place to get out of the car and stretch your legs, head to the waterfront. Park your vehicle in a spot along Ruston Way and walk along the 5 mile long paved path between Point Ruston and the Chinese Reconciliation Park. Keep an eye out for sea otters, seals, and other marine life.

Why visit: Forever known for Sleepless in Seattle and grunge music (thanks to Tom Hanks and Nirvana), Seattle is Washington’s biggest city with so much more than houseboats and hippies in flannel and blue jeans. Yes, music is a big part of the scene here, and there are some incredible waterfront walks, but no trip to Seattle would be complete without a visit to the Fremont Street Market, or shopping for flowers at Pike Place Market.

Other noteworthy attractions include the Space Needle, the Museum of Pop Culture, and the Chihuly Glass garden all at the Seattle Center. At the waterfront, eat fish and chips and clam chowder at Ivar’s, ride on the seaside ferris wheel, or go back in time at the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical park.

What will the kids think? Kid’s will fall in love with the sea otters in the Seattle Aquarium, that’s a given. If it’s hot out, take them to the Seattle Center to run and play in the International Fountain and splash area.

How to get there from I-5: For the Seattle Center take exit 167 for Mercer St toward Seattle Center. For the Waterfront take exit 164a and then west on Madison street (northbound) or exit 165a and then west on Columbia street (Southbound).

Best tip for visiting: Parking in Seattle can be very difficult and expensive. Choose one place to park and take public transportation around the city. If the Seattle Center is on your itinerary, park at the Republic Parking lot nearby then leave your car there and ride the monorail downtown after visiting the attractions at the center.

Skagit Valley

Why visit: Skagit Valley is best known for its Tulip festival and acres and acres of gorgeous spring time flowers. If you’re driving through during the months of March and April, a drive through the daffodil or tulip fields is a must. Other times of the year, just take a drive through the idyllic farmlands, stop for some shopping at a local creamery or roadside farm stand, or enjoy some fantastic farm to table culinary treats.

There are a few unique and interesting small towns in the Skagit Valley, each worth at least a short visit. Our favorites are La Conner, Edison, and Mt. Vernon. La Conner is a quiet old waterfront town with a long history in the area, showcased in its resplendently restored nineteenth century buildings.

A little further afield, Edison is a quirky tiny little artist community with galleries and one of our favorite bakeries, Bread Farm. Finally, Mt. Vernon is the home of the Tulip Festival and a great town to use as a base during a visit to the valley or as a jumping off point for a scenic drive along the Cascade Loop .

What will the kids think? The Tulip Festival is packed full of fun, kid friendly activities like face painting and trolley rides through the flower fields. Other activities throughout the year include pumpkin patches, u-pick berry farms, and a petting zoo.

How to get there from I-5: Mt. Vernon is located right on I-5 at exit 226.

Best tip for visiting: Timing is everything. The best times of year to visit are April and October. In April the flowers are in bloom and the Tulip Festival is in full swing. In the fall, pumpkin patches and corn mazes are sure to entertain the whole family. Finally, take exit 224 northbound, or 225 southbound, and stop at the self-serve Cedardale Orchards cider store, for a gallon of the best apple cider.

Why visit: An underrated city, Bellingham has a colorful past and really has plenty to offer. With its fascinating historic downtown center, this is a great place to get out of the car and explore. There are a few world class museums, but our favorite was the Spark Museum of Electrical Invention. We really loved the interactive displays, demos, and intriguing history behind the War of the Currents (AC/DC).

Bellingham has beautiful parks, loads of good food, and, for those on a truly epic road trip, the Bellingham Cruise Terminal is located in the historic Fairhaven district. This is the starting point of the Alaska Marine Highway where you can catch a ferry to Alaska!

What will the kids think? Children will be amazed with the demonstrations and interactive exhibits in the Sparks Museum. Of course, they’ll also love the sculpture park as well as having lunch at one of the food trucks in Waypoint Park.

How to get there from I-5: Whether heading north or south, take exit 253 for Lakewood drive. Then travel west on Lakewood East Holly Street and into the downtown core.

Best tip for visiting: Make the most of your visit to Bellingham by going on a Saturday morning. Enjoy the snacks and shopping at the Farmer’s Market (also held on Wednesdays), then head over to the Spark Museum for the Mega Zapper show (2:30 on Saturday and Sunday).

Peace Arch State Park

Why visit? Most American’s are at least a little familiar with the War of 1812 fought between the young USA and Great Britain, but most probably don’t know how it affected the Pacific Northwest. Fortunately, the Peace Arch State Park provides the history and background of these historic times. Learn all about the treaties that established the US-Canada borders and enjoy a stroll around a beautiful park with lush gardens.

It’s a short walk on a paved path from the parking lot down to the monument, perfect for stretching those road weary legs. The park sits right on the border and you could even walk across the grassy lawn and into Canada, but don’t. Border patrols are sitting in the parking lot watching carefully. Don’t worry, though, it’s not scary, this is an undefended border after all.

What will the kids think? Going on a road trip with kids means planning stops to release energy. They need get out of the car and just run around and play. The Peace Arch State Park offers a chance to learn a little bit of history and burn off some of that pent up energy. There’s a small playground in the park, a short walking path down to the Arch, and clean bathrooms.

How to get there from I-5: To really get the most out of the park, take exit 276 off of I-5 and follow the signs to Peace Arch State Park. Otherwise, if you’re driving through the border you’re going to drive right through the park and within a few dozen feet of the Peace Arch Memorial.

Most of the time, there is a long backup at the border offering ample time for passengers to get out and get a closer look and take some photos. Just keep an eye on the car and be ready to jump back in if the traffic starts moving!

Best tip for visiting: Pay attention to the signs, sometimes some sections of the park are closed and people aren’t allowed out of their vehicles. Also, after visiting the Peace Arch, make sure to go into Blaine for some amazing ice cream at the Edaleen Dairy Story.

Luckily there are plenty of rest stops all along I-5. The one pictured above is in California, but they are all very well maintained, clean, and have plenty of room for parking. Some have designated dog walking areas, information stands, and even vending machines. For safe driving, make sure to pull over and take plenty of breaks.

Mountain Passes

There are a couple of very high mountain passes along I-5, so you will want to keep that in mind as you plan. There can be snowfall on any of them from late October through April, and of course this will really slow you down. Plus it just becomes that much more dangerous. If you are hauling a trailer, or have a large RV , it might be a good idea to pull over and just stop until the road is completely clear.

Pro Tip: Make sure to check road conditions before planning too long a drive. The passes, especially, can get congested and the weather changes frequently because of the elevation. Roadnow has updated weather conditions.

Most of I-5 has temperate weather throughout the year. Even as you get further north, the road rarely freezes. The hardest part is the winter storms in the mountain passes. However, the storms usually do not last long, and doing tourist activities and beautiful views in the winter are just as great, so traveling all year long would still be a good option.

It seems that if you are going to be out west at all, at some time you will find yourself on I-5. This is great, because it’s an iconic highway, and there’s plenty to do all along the way.

There are many ways to do a cross-country road trip in the USA, but these two itineraries will take you through some truly iconic American places.

1. Chicago to Los Angeles: A Whiskey Road Trip on Route 66

It doesn’t get more American than a 2,000-mile drive along the entirety of Route 66. There are endless ways to take this legendary trip (including an EV version —but to take your cross-country road trip to the next level, we recommend exploring another American pastime: whiskey.

Starting in Chicago and ending in L.A., you’ll stop by some of the leading craft distilleries in the United States, like Few Spirits in Chicago, Still 630 in St. Louis, and Red Fork Distillery in Tulsa. 2. Bangor, Maine, to Seattle, Washington: The Great Northern on U.S. Route 2

I-90 - Erie PA, Buffalo NY (could visit Niagara Falls), Finger Lakes region, Cooperstown NY, Massachusetts Berkshires region, Boston then up to Maine.via I-95 then US-1.

How many days/nights allotted to the drive?

The road trip is about 19 hours without stops.

19-20 hours of Google Maps time depending where you start (Waukegan will take longer than, say, Tinley Park). This assumes you will always be driving at the speed limit, which of course is not going to happen. Realistically this is going to be 24 hours behind the wheel, more if the dog needs exercise more often.

How many days do you want to do this in? Two insanely grueling days each way? Three merely long days? Four days with at least time to stop and see stuff along the way?

Any online mapping service results will be for wheels turning at maximum highway speeds for the entire length of the trip. You will need to factor in additional time for traffic and weather delays, washroom breaks, meals, refuelling, dog walks, sightseeing, etc.

9 beautiful stops along the new kentucky wildlands waterfall trail.

Horse farms and bourbon distilleries may come to mind when thinking about Kentucky, but folks now have another reason visit to the Bluegrass State—waterfalls.

Launched in 2023, the Kentucky Wildlands Waterfall Trail spotlights 17 of the region’s more than 800 waterfalls.

Choosing them was no easy feat. The team from the Wildlands—a regional tourism initiative—worked with local experts to evaluate the region’s falls on criteria such as parking, accessibility, and hiking level.

They also wanted to ensure that the trail traversed the entire region. “A lot of locals know where these waterfalls are,” says Wildlands Director Tammie Nazario. “We wanted to make them easy for our visitors to find.”

Ready to chase some Kentucky waterfalls? Here’s a 4-day road trip that leads to 9 of the trail’s prettiest.

Day 1: Albany to Cumberland Falls State Park

1. 76 falls.

Begin at a picturesque cascade that rushes from Indian Creek into Lake Cumberland. On any summer day, you’ll find the cove below the falls full of every variety of watercraft—this place is one of several that considers itself the houseboating capital of the world—making 76 one of the trail’s more popular spots. You don’t need your own ark to enjoy the scene.

Park in the lot beside Indian Creek and follow the steps to the falls. The trail to the right of the picnic area offers the best views.

2. Mill Springs Falls

From there, it’s about 30 miles east to Monticello and Mill Springs Park . A steep, paved trail winds along the banks of Lake Cumberland to a restored 19th-century grist mill that overlooks a set of falls that surge from numerous springs.

Afterward, tuck into smoked brisket and pulled-pork sandwiches, potato salad, and apple cobbler with ice cream. Dunagan’s Grocery and Supply , open since 1930, once served as the Mill Springs post office.

3. Yahoo Falls

End the day with a gorgeous, 0.5-mile out-and-back hike. This horsetail falls, billed as Kentucky’s tallest , spills 113 feet from an enormous rock house in the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area .

The massive sandstone outcrops found throughout the region sheltered the region’s first residents 12,000 years ago. For added adventure, continue another 0.8 mile beyond the falls to Yahoo Arch, another remarkable sandstone formation.

Settle in for the next 2 nights at the Sheltowee Trace Adventure Resort . For a unique glamping experience, bunk in one of the resort’s 6 Conestoga covered wagons, complete with a comfortable king bed, a set of bunk beds, and electricity (wagon rates start at $164 and include a bundle of firewood).

If the timing is right, view one of the Western Hemisphere’s most remarkable natural phenomena just 5 miles down the road: the Cumberland Falls moonbow at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park. Also called a lunar rainbow, this arc of white light forms when moonlight refracts through mist rising from the falls.

Day 2: Cumberland Falls State Resort Park and Corbin

Whether you caught the moonbow or not, don’t miss seeing Kentucky’s most visited waterfall by day. Nicknamed the “Niagara of the South,” Cumberland Falls measures 68 feet tall and 125 feet wide.

Although a short trail from the parking area leads to several viewing platforms, Sheltowee Trace has multiple ways to get close, from mellow rafting rides and stand-up paddleboarding excursions to kayak trips.

5. Eagle Falls

It's a short drive over the Gatliff Bridge to the Eagle Falls trailhead, where you can embark on an undulating, 3-mile round-trip hike through the forest. This moderately strenuous trail follows a high ridge and rewards your efforts with views of both Cumberland and Eagle Falls, the latter of which spills off a sandstone ledge and into a pool below.

Break for lunch in nearby Corbin, the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Don’t miss the “Secret Recipe” garden at Sanders Park on Main Street, which has been planted with some of the 11 herbs and spices purportedly used in the Colonel’s famous chicken.

A bit farther down the road, the Sanders Café & Museum displays a kitschy repository of vintage KFC memorabilia; a KFC is attached to the building. For an elevated meal, head to The Wrigley , a taproom and eatery where chef-owner Kristin Smith turns ingredients sourced from local farmers into hearty Appalachian fare.

On your way out of town, pick up provisions for dinner and relax back at camp. Each covered wagon has a picnic table and a charcoal grill, and there’s a communal firepit for s’mores making.

Day 3: Corbin to Red River Gorge

Get an early start; the hike through Daniel Boone National Forest is just over 5 miles round-trip. The path follows Pounder Branch Creek on a section of the 319-mile Sheltowee Trace National Recreational Trail that includes numerous side streams and smaller cascades. After a bit of rock hopping, the trail ends at a 40-foot horsetail that plummets over huge sandstone boulders.

Hop onto SR 192 for the 25-minute drive to London, where you can sit for a spell over lunch at Local Honey , a chic café that serves made-from-scratch Southern comfort food with a bit of Cajun flair.

 7. Flat Lick Falls

Afterward, continue east to the Flat Lick Falls Scenic and Recreation Area , where a paved, 0.5-mile trail provides easy access to a lovely 33-foot cascade . Take a few moments to enjoy the falls from the observation deck before following a dirt side trail to a deep pool at the waterfall’s base, perfect for a quick dip.

It's about 40 miles north to the Cliffview Lodge , an invitingly rustic retreat with 16 cozy rooms that makes an excellent home base for exploring the Red River Gorge Geological Area . Rates start at $170 plus cleaning fees; AAA discount available. For dinner, the nearby Red River Rockhouse is a farm-to-fork café with grass-fed burgers and a good selection of local beers on tap.

Day 4: Red River Gorge Geological Area

Better known as “the Red,” the 29,000-acre Red River Gorge is a massive canyon system and National Natural Landmark, home to more than 100 natural stone arches, miles of hiking trails, and 2 of the trail’s waterfalls. It’s also a major hub for climbers who come to scale its towering sandstone cliffs.

8. Copperas Falls

The most recent rainfall will determine if this 40-foot waterfall is more of a shower or a cascade. It spills over a rock ledge into a pool with a massive cave behind it. The unmarked 3-mile out-and-back trail to the falls traces Copperas Creek through the lush, forested landscape, making it simple to follow. With several stream crossings en route, you may want to pack an extra pair of socks.

For a respite from hiking, paddle a kayak through the subterranean landscape of a 19th-century limestone mine with the folks at Gorge Underground . Or hop aboard the Skylift for a scenic ride through the treetops to Natural Bridge State Resort Park , an enormous sandstone arch that has stood for millennia.

For lunch, try Miguel’s Pizza in Slade, where artist-owner Miguel Ventura has fed hungry climbers and hikers since 1984. Grab a seat at a picnic table and enjoy pizzas made with Miguel’s house-made dough and tangy tomato sauce. Numerous topping options include artichokes, anchovies, pulled pork, brisket, kalamata olives, and sweet potato.

From Miguel’s, Rock Bridge Trail is about an 11- to 13-mile drive, depending on the route. The mellow, 1.5-mile loop follows Swift Camp Creek through a verdant swath of forest and passes several sandstone walls, ledges, and shelters.

At the falls , a flat, sandy beach area surrounds a shallow pool that invites wading on a warm day. Nearby, Rock Bridge Arch is the only natural stone arch in the gorge that spans a stream.

Afterward, toast your adventures at Sky Bridge Station , a casual eatery housed in a hand-hewn log cabin. Though the restaurant’s Epic Journey Burger is probably the menu’s star, you can’t go wrong with their gourmet hot dogs, loaded hummus, or huge quesadillas. Live music and ice-cold local beers and ciders on draft round out the fun. Call ahead for hours.

Navigate Your Career Path Like the Road Trip of a Lifetime

Over the past few years, the way we work has changed. Recent data show that working in a single company, or staying confined to a single job title, for several years is becoming rarer. Not everyone’s career paths will be traditional and resemble a climb up a mountain. And that’s okay. We need a new way to approach our careers, one that allows us to be nimble and resilient. Why not  approach your paths like the road trip of a lifetime — to build an intentional career path that is unique, enjoyable, and adaptive to change.

• Get in the driver’s seat. You don’t have to be confined to a predetermined path and you don’t have to stay on a single track — you can curate a portfolio of experiences. You can embark on a diverse and adventurous journey filled with discovery.
• Know that the plan is iterative. When you set off on a road trip, you don’t plug your ultimate destination into the GPS and drive there as quickly and directly as possible. You ask yourself some key questions about what you want to experience along the journey: What kinds of places do I want to visit? What do I want to see and experience? When you embark on your career, know that it is okay to make detours.
• Be open to unexpected opportunities and load up your trunk. On a  road trip, change is expected — that’s what makes it a rich adventure. Approach your career path with openness to unforeseen possibilities and seize them. You can even loop back to revisit somewhere you’ve been before with fresh eyes and new experience under your belt. As you explore, practice articulating the connections between where you’ve been and where you’re going. You should learn how to transfer your unique skills to each new role, as they can make you an asset in new spaces.
