Comedian Rob Brydon says he’s stepping out of his comfort zone on stand-up tour with a musical twist
Having appeared in two festive TV favourites, Rob Brydon is now looking to take a step outside of his comfort zone.
The Welsh comedian was part of ratings winner Gavin & Stacey, on Christmas Day, and also hosted the long-running Would I Lie To You? Christmas special.
Now, he’s going back to his first love of stand-up – with a twist.
As well as his usual comedy and impersonations, his new tour will feature Rob singing, accompanied by an eight-piece band.
“It’s a deliberate risk,” he said. “I’ve got to the stage of my career where shows I’m in like Would I Lie To You? And The Trip and stand-up tours all return.
“But I want to go outside my comfort zone and test myself.
“I’ll be nervous before this tour, thinking, ‘What will the reaction be?’
“But I’m taking a chance, and the fact there is risk involved is part of the thrill of it.
“It will take some people by surprise.
“They might only know me from Gavin & Stacey or Would I Lie To You? and they often say to me, ‘I didn’t know you could sing’. Yet I’ve sung a lot.”
Rob has enjoyed singing since school and has even had a No.1, with his cover of Islands In The Stream alongside Ruth Jones, Robin Gibb and Tom Jones, a Comic Relief charity single.
But it was a trip to see actor-turned-jazz musician Jeff Goldblum in concert that made the 54-year-old Welsh entertainer decide to launch this new tour.
“He played his songs, but he did lots of other things as well, like film quizzes,” Rob continued. “The show followed no rulebook.
“I found that quite liberating and quite instructive. It showed me you don’t have to follow the rules.
“You can make the show whatever you want it to be, so that’s what I’ve done with Songs & Stories.”
Rob, who trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff before moving to a job at BBC Wales, reveals that Songs & Stories will recount his life story through a series of anecdotes and songs by artists such as Paul Simon, George and Ira Gershwin, Stephen Sondheim, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Waits.
Rob’s comedy and music roots go back to his rather uncool teenage years.
He said: “It goes back to my childhood. I was 16 and starting to get interested in girls, but I was always pining from afar.
“In my teens I lived in Porthcawl, a coastal town, and all the cool boys were surfers.
“I wasn’t a surfer. I had a go once, but I hurt my knee!
“My musical taste was never considered cool. I never set much store by stuff being fashionable.
“I loved David Bowie and The Police, but also Shakin’ Stevens and Cliff Richard, which not many boys of my age did. Well, not the ones sitting at the back of the bus!”
Rob hopes the show provides some escapism for the audience.
“As a performer in the last few years, you can really feel people just want to escape. It’s tangible.
“People come up to you afterwards and say, ‘I’m so glad you didn’t talk about the state of the country or the current US President.’
“My show is an escape. It’s a service.”

Rob Brydon: I Am Standing Up review – comic's comeback is edgier than it seems
De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea Picking on the audience is engaging more than cruel as Brydon riffs and ad-libs with seasoned charm in his new tour
L ined with retirement bungalows and holiday flats, the Sussex seaside resort of Bexhill is a place where people generally go to wind down. But Rob Brydon – visiting the long, low, white De La Warr Pavilion last Friday night – was expanding an already busy professional portfolio that includes several TV panel shows and the comedy-travelogue The Trip , cruise commercials and West End theatre roles .
His first standup tour since an acclaimed stint in 2009-10 calls, as well as Bexhill, at other locations associated with those in the last phase of life, including Bournemouth and Cheltenham. Brydon is fully alive to the possibilities there for near-death jokes.
During the Q&A session that ends his 100-minute set, he checks whether one senior theatregoer is raising her hand or “just having an involuntary spasm”. He also fantasises about an aged spectator nodding off, then wondering, on coming to, why the figure in the blaze of light ahead, welcoming him to heaven, is not the dear departed, as he had hoped, but the guy from the P&O ads .
So warm is Brydon’s persona, though, that no offence ever seemed to be taken at a show that, in the manner of Barry Humphries or Al Murray , often consists of heckling the audience. Securing names and details from those in the front rows, he uses them in escalating running gags, their reward being a verse in a song improvised, on guitar, at the end. Such personalised comedy sometimes relies on preprepared gags that can be adapted to professions and names likely to turn up any night, but Brydon seems impressively able to create genuinely reactive ad-libs out of live situations.
The material is also geographically tailored. Bexhill ticket-buyers were flattered with references to their civility in comparison with the thugs down the coast in Hastings. (The dig will presumably flip when Brydon plays Hastings later in the month .)
Humphries and Murray, when using their fans as fodder, are hiding behind a character, whereas this performer is theoretically being himself, although the autobiographical strand is complicated by the “Rob Brydon” on The Trip and the cruise commercials having fictional wives distinct from the two factual women he has married; all four spouses figure in funny stories.
The comedian first made an impression through his facility with famous voices, and he sensibly drops into anecdotes his greatest take-offs, including Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Ken Bruce and Steve Coogan. So guileless is his style that it is impossible to be sure whether the sudden appearance of Rolf Harris during one routine was a voluntary or involuntary spasm. The latter was suggested by urgent pleas to the audience not to tweet about the moment, although this apology could be another sleight of tongue by a comedian who is consistently edgier than he seems.

Rob Brydon talks lies, impressions and next trip to Australia for his musical comedy show
As a star of stage and screen, he's arguably become best known for two things: impressions and lies.
Key points:
- Rob Brydon will return to Australia in March for his show A Night Of Songs and Laughter
- Ahead of the tour, he reflected on his first appearance on Would I Lie to You? — which did not go according to plan
- While his show is music-based, Brydon's impressions will be in the mix
But actor, comedian, singer and raconteur Rob Brydon is being utterly sincere when he says his role hosting Would I Lie to You? (WILTY) was far from a matter of destiny.
His first appearance was as a panellist — and it didn't quite go to plan.
"I was booked for two episodes and I pulled out of the second one because I thought I was so bad on the first," he told ABC Radio Adelaide's Stacey Lee and Nikolai Beilharz.
"I said to my agent, 'Tell 'em I'm not well'.
"They must have thought he was so awful he can host it."
Naturally, it wasn't nearly as bad as all that, and there was a salutary lesson.
"As a performer, you can sometimes have a very skewhiffed view of things," he said.
"You'll think, 'This isn't so good, this isn't going well' — but that's not what the audience is seeing."
Brydon is currently preparing to bring his show A Night Of Songs and Laughter to Australia next year, including Adelaide on March 21.
It's a musical memoir of sorts — Brydon's aim is to charm audiences with songs about his early years.
"When they see I'm coming with a band, they probably think they're some old duffers on their last legs. But these guys in the band, they are just stunning — they're so good," he said.
"It's become a nice balanced show — I've heard it described as almost like a variety show."
Impressions to feature alongside stories
As far as sonorous Welshmen are concerned, Brydon may or may not give Tom Jones a run for his money — but it's more as a mimic than as a singer that he has achieved renown.
The Trip series is largely a vehicle for the vocal virtuosity of himself and co-star Steve Coogan, and his upcoming tour will showcase that skill.
"I'll do impressions in it and talking to the audience and telling stories and then the music weaves its way through," he said.
"[There's an] emphasis more on the early days, talking about going to school in old South Wales, not New South Wales, and how I got into performing."
The last time he was here, Brydon was "pleasantly surprised" by the way his sense of humour resonated with Australian audiences.
"A lot of British comics play the Netherlands, they play Europe, they'll go to Dubai, they'll play America — I've never had any interest in that," he said.
"I don't know if you can say this about Aussies generally — but my audience knows my stuff, they know The Trip and they know Would I Lie to You? and they know Gavin and Stacey.
"That common ground that I have with the UK audience, I also had with the Australian audience."
But will he be making a cameo on the Australian version of WILTY?
"That's a nice idea — I hadn't thought of that," he said.
"I'm aware of it but I haven't seen it. But yes, yes, maybe I could."

Rob Brydon Announces First Ever Australian Stand-Up Comedy Tour
Rob Brydon is a UK panel-show and TV comedy stalwart whose film credits include Swimming With Men , Early Man , Cinderella and Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels . But he might be best known for his role as Steve Coogan’s best friend and primary source of frustration in the comedy series (and movies) The Trip , the first instalment of which was released in 2010.
In the show the pair travels around the north of England reviewing restaurants for the Observer while their impersonations and gentle bickering explore the subtleties of middle age and male friendship. It’s a warm and hilarious series that has a devoted following, not least because of Brydon’s improvisational comedy.
In Brydon’s stand-up show I Am Standing Up , which is coming to Australia in March for the first time, these skills take centre stage. Fans of the Welsh actor – whose influences include Barry Humphries, Peter Sellers and Woody Allen –will be comforted to know there are no big surprises. Expect a humorous, witty and charming exploration of ageing, impersonations and the occasional improvised song.
